The powders of ZnO and ZnO+3 and 22 wt.% Al2O3 were agglomerated using spray drying and subsequently heat-treated at 1300 °C in air. The powders were plasma sprayed in controlled atmosphere (CAPS) into water and onto sand blasted steel substrates. The powder particles were characterized using laser sizer and their microstructure was tested with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped in secondary electrons and back-scattered electron detectors. The phase analysis, made with X-ray diffraction (XRD) enabled to find ZnAl2O4 spinel in heat-treated powders and in some of sprayed coatings. This phase was transformed from α-Al2O3 and ZnO phases present in initially agglomerated powders. The infrared emissivity of sprayed coatings was depending on the following factors: wavelength, chemical composition of initial powders and atmosphere of spraying. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper is a numerical investigation of the physical phenomena that control the dynamic behaviour of embedded cantilevered retaining walls. Recent experimental observations obtained from centrifuge tests have shown that embedded cantilevered retaining walls experience permanent displacements even before the acceleration reaches its critical value, corresponding to full mobilisation of the soil strength. The motivation for this work stems from the need to incorporate these observations in simplified design procedures. A parametric study was carried out on a pair of embedded cantilevered walls in dry sand, subjected to real earthquakes scaled at different values of the maximum acceleration. The results of these analyses indicate that, for the geotechnical design of the wall, the equivalent acceleration to be used in pseudo-static calculations can be related to the maximum displacement that the structure can sustain, and can be larger than the maximum acceleration expected at the site. For the structural design of the wall, it is suggested that the maximum bending moments of the wall can be computed using a realistic distribution of contact stress and a conservative value of the pseudo-static acceleration, taking into account two-dimensional amplification effects near the walls. This work was aimed at developing a plasma spraying process for the deposition of ZrB2 coatings. The ZrB2 powder was prepared by a spray drying technique and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser granulometry. XRD revealed the presence of ZrO2 in the coatings deposited by atmospheric plasma spray (APS), while ZrB2 was only present in the coatings deposited by inert plasma spray (IPS). The microhardness increased from 900 to over 1500 HV by increasing the spraying pressure over the atmospheric one. The coatings were submitted to pin-on-disc testing and their behavior was compared to the WC–Co and TiO2+Al2O3 coatings, sprayed by high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) and APS, respectively. The characterization results showed that the ZrB2 coatings, deposited by IPS, were good electrical conductors and they compared favorably with the reference coatings, in terms of tribological performance. Groin nodal metastasis in vulvar cancer (VC) is an important prognostic feature. Most VC patients are not eligible for vulvar surgery alone and SLNB is applicable in a limited number of cases: all others undergo radical inguinofemoral dissection with its complication rate.
