Talent transfer has enabled elite athletes to be successful in another sport, with great potential in para-sport. Previous research suggests that similarities between donor and recipient sports may facilitate talent transfer; however, this remains unclear in para-sport. This study investigated patterns between donor and recipient sports' characteristics, identifying the impact on talent transfer in para-sport. An Australian case study utilizing secondary data of 38 Australian Paralympians who competed at the Paralympic Games from 2000 through 2020 was analyzed. Results demonstrated that similarities between sports were not significantly associated with successful talent transfers between Paralympic sports. Understanding patterns associated with successful Paralympic talent transfers offers a foundation of knowledge for designing and developing future talent-transfer pathways and research. Based on this study, it is recommended that sport administrators and practitioners explore greater opportunity for talent transfer in para-sport, rather than limiting talent-transfer opportunities based on athletes' donor sports. Recognizing the importance of timing in efforts to drive institutional change, this study examined how actors engage in "temporal institutional work" in their attempts to disrupt inequitable institutions in sport. A qualitative case study was conducted on football (soccer) in Australia wherein significant gender equity reforms have been enacted. The findings revealed how the temporal activities of entraining (e.g., capitalizing on external interventions), constructing urgency (e.g., through advocacy), and enacting momentum (e.g., through consensus-based leadership) allowed actors to exploit a time-sensitive window of opportunity for change, quickly foster a perception of irreversibility that structural change would occur, and generate synchronicity with broader reforms. Inspired by the breakthroughs in Australian football, this research highlights temporal-based strategies for combating gender inequity in sport. Teacher librarians (TLs) play a central role in developing students' information literacy capabilities, which are vital for effective participation in formal education and active engagement in society. This research enhances insights into information literacy instruction in Australian secondary schools, by investigating the perceptions of practicing TLs regarding the information literacy needs of teachers and students. This article presents the groundwork for this investigation, employing a phenomenological approach and discussing findings from an initial survey. The study will inform TL education and improve current information literacy education practices, addressing the demand for nurturing 21st century skills embedded in the Australian Curriculum. Physical literacy development in early childhood, viewed by many as the foundation for lifelong physical activity engagement, is significantly influenced by parents. Our aim was to explore parents' understanding of physical literacy and gain insight into their perspectives on physical literacy promotion. We recruited 18 parents of children between 5 and 8 years old in Australia. Using semistructured interviews and thematic analysis, we identified several key issues regarding parents' understanding and implementation of physical literacy. Parents expressed interest in improving their implementation of physical literacy practices and had (often unintentionally) provided support for physical literacy subcomponents in the past. However, they described difficulties prioritizing physical literacy above other parental demands and expressed conflicting perceptions regarding where the responsibility should lie for developing their child's physical literacy (e.g., at home or at school). To ensure that the physical literacy "message" reaches parents, we encourage physical literacy promoters to consider the target (e.g., responsibility, priorities, and awareness) of their promotional strategies. We examined the sweat characteristics and fluid balance of elite female field hockey players during two heat training camps. Fourteen elite female field hockey players from the Australian national squad participated in two heat training camps held ∼6 months apart, following winter- (Camp 1) and summer-based training (Camp 2). Daily waking body mass (BM) and urine specific gravity (USG) were collected, along with several markers of sweat and fluid balance across two matches per camp. There was a 19% mean reduction in estimated whole-body sweat sodium concentration from Camp 1 (45.8 ± 6.5 mmol/L) to Camp 2 (37.0 ± 5.0 mmol/L; p <.001). Waking urine specific gravity ≥ 1.020 was observed in 31% of samples, with no significant differences in mean urine specific gravity or BM between camps (p >.05), but with substantial interindividual variation. Intramatch sweat rates were high (1.2–1.8 L/hr), with greater BM losses in Camp 1 (p =.030), resulting in fewer players losing ≥2% BM in Camp 2 (0%–8%), as compared with Camp 1 (36%–43%; p =.017). Our field data suggest that elite female field hockey players experience substantial sweat losses during competition in the heat regardless of the season. In agreement with previous findings, we observed substantial interindividual variation in sweat and hydration indices, supporting the use of individualized athlete hydration strategies. Context: Hip and groin injuries are common in field sports such as football, with measurement of hip strength and range of motion (ROM) recommended for assessment of these conditions. We aimed to report hip strength, hip ROM, and functional task performance in young elite Australian football athletes. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Fifty-eight newly drafted Australian Football League athletes completed hip abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and flexion strength testing with an adjustable stabilized or hand-held dynamometer. Hip internal rotation and external rotation, bent knee fall out, and ankle dorsiflexion ROM were also measured. Players completed hop for distance, side bridge, and star excursion balance functional tests. We compared findings between the dominant and nondominant limbs. Results: We found small deficits unlikely to be clinically meaningful in the dominant limb for hip abduction and adduction strength, and a small deficit in the nondominant limb for external rotation strength and side bridge time. Athletes had lower hip internal rotation (mean difference 2.56°; 95% confidence interval, 0.87 to 4.26) and total rotation ROM (2.03°; 95% confidence interval, 0.06 to 4.01) on the dominant limb. Conclusions: There were no meaningful differences between dominant and nondominant limbs for hip strength, ROM, or functional tests. Context: This study investigated individual sociocognitive factors from the theory of planned behavior and their relationship to exercise for postconcussion recovery. Design and Methods: Four hundred and fifty-nine Australian adults, two-thirds of whom had no concussion history (66%), completed an online survey of their beliefs and attitudes toward exercise for postconcussion recovery. Secondary questions evaluated program design features that could affect engagement (eg, session frequency). Results: Structured equation modeling found that subjective norms were the strongest significant predictor of intention to participate in exercise for postconcussion recovery. Perceived behavioral control was also a significant predictor of intention to participate but to a lesser extent. Attitude did not predict participation intention. The design features identified as key were personalization and being supervised during the program. Conclusions: This study found that people's intention to participate in a program of exercise postconcussion recovery is shaped by individual psychological factors and identified program design features that could be adjusted for increased engagement. Program success could be maximized through strategies such as supporting individuals to have a stronger sense of control over their participation through the choice of session timing or frequency and harnessing the influence of significant others via supportive messaging from key professionals. Non‐binary and genderqueer identities are increasingly discussed in public discourse and academia, but there remains a dearth of academic literature centred on non‐binary people's lives and experiences. When non‐binary people are included in research, it is frequently as an additive to explorations of trans identities and subsumed under the trans umbrella or treated as categorically indistinct. Much has been written from a clinical perspective, but the social sciences tend to discuss non‐binary identity conceptually or as a proxy in theoretical arguments. Of the emerging sociological literature on non‐binary identity, much is from the United States or the United Kingdom. Thus, this scoping review engaged with the corpus of research on non‐binary people in “Australia” to consider social change and policy needs. We found much about the negative health impacts resulting from discrimination and barriers, emphasising the structural and systemic nature of the existing gender binary. However, the majority of these papers include a focus on how non‐binary people actively participate in the collective creation of community, identity and safe spaces for affirmation. Resilience, coping strategies and solidarity were key themes and offer important insights into how the barriers identified can be ameliorated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an increasing need to provide evidence of outcomes within the community services sector. However, funding challenges, workforce pressures, and the complex social contexts in which community service organizations operate limit their potential for organizational capacity building. This has flow on effects on the ability to conduct impactful and strategic research. The embedded research model (i.e., when a researcher is embedded into a "host" organisation) may aid in building research and evaluation capacity. This may be particularly useful for the purposes of routine outcome monitoring and continuous quality improvement, which may in turn lead to opportunities for local research and evaluation through the embedded research model. Previous research on the embedded research model across various settings has suggested a number of lessons for implementation. However, to date, nil research has focused on community service organizations. Additional considerations need to be made within this context due to resource limitations, ethical issues, and diverse reporting requirements. Such considerations include the need to take a 'slow science' approach to research and evaluation outputs, consideration of the organisation's readiness for change, and the need to report activities in a transparent, thorough, and consistent manner. The endorsement of embedded research in community service organisations may aid in providing evidence of outcomes for clients, and simultaneously, increase the ability for policymakers to evidence-informed decisions on how to improve outcomes for the local population. Background Aims Materials and Methods Results Conclusions Infectious syphilis among women of reproductive age continues to rise in many countries including Australia, with a resultant increase in congenital syphilis. In response, new guidelines for management of syphilis in pregnancy were published in Queensland, Australia in 2018.This study evaluates the management of women diagnosed with syphilis in pregnancy in South‐East Queensland (SEQ) after release of this guideline.This retrospective review of notification data identified women in SEQ who had a positive syphilis serology during pregnancy, without evidence of adequate treatment prior to the pregnancy, between January 2019 and December 2021 inclusive. Maternal demographics and pregnancy details including syphilis staging, testing and management were extracted, with management assessed against the 2018 Queensland syphilis in pregnancy guideline.Of the 42 women identified, 79% were diagnosed in the first or second trimester, 69% had early‐stage syphilis at the time of diagnosis and 86% were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. All, including the eight (19%) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women identified, completed stage‐appropriate treatment with penicillin, 83% completed treatment four weeks prior to delivery and 60% achieved a four‐fold reduction in rapid plasma reagin at time of delivery.Our findings suggest compliance with syphilis in pregnancy management recommendations has improved in SEQ since release of the 2018 guidelines. However, congenital syphilis rates continue to rise; further initiatives addressing barriers to timely testing and management of syphilis in pregnancy are urgently needed at both healthcare system levels and for individual women. Background: This study investigated the cost-effectiveness of using fenofibrate to treat type 2 diabetes in Australia. The financial burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus is estimated to surpass AUD10 billion, mainly due to the cost of diabetic complications from diabetic neuropathy. Clinical evidence from the Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) study demonstrated that fenofibrate can reduce the risk of amputation and other diabetes-related complications. Methods: This study used a calibrated UKPDS model with an Australian diabetes cohort to simulate complications and deaths over a 20-year time horizon. The effectiveness of fenofibrate was assessed using the FIELD study. Total cost was calculated over the 20-year time horizon. Input data was obtained from the Australian Refined-Disease Related Groups and the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Results: The model estimated that fenofibrate is associated with lower complication costs, which save over AUD 4.6 million per 1,000 patients. The most significant savings were observed in amputations. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio for fenofibrate treatment was estimated to be AUD 739/LY gained and AUD 1189/QALY gained. Conclusion: The use of fenofibrate in Type 2 diabetes patients is estimated to result in cost savings in an Australian setting due to fewer diabetes complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

However, little is known about the characteristics of RRR AOD workers nationally, or factors associated with retention.To examine the personal and professional characteristics of RRR AOD workers and identify factors that predict intent to remain in the workforce.Secondary analysis of Australian National AOD Workforce Survey data, a cross‐sectional online survey of AOD workers (N = 1506).AOD workers employed in RRR Australia (N = 447).Demographic and professional characteristics; intent to remain in current job for the next year.The majority of RRR AOD workers were female (72%) and worked full time (65%) in the NGO sector (58%). Most (56%) intended to stay in their job. There were not only high rates of poor job engagement (33%) and high burnout (42%) but also high job satisfaction (80%). Significant predictors (p < 0.05) of retention intention were job satisfaction, low burnout, employment security and respect in the workplace.Workforce initiatives and benefits tailored to the current composition of the RRR AOD workforce are needed. Our understanding of bird migration is heavily biased toward long-distance movements in the Northern Hemisphere, 1,2,3 with only fragmented knowledge from the Southern Hemisphere. 4,5 In Australia, while some species migrate, 4,6,7,8 the timing and direction of large-scale, multi-species seasonal movements remain critically understudied due to the complexity of movement in this region and a lack of research personnel and infrastructure. 7,9 It is still unclear whether there are pronounced and structured mass movements resembling those in the Northern Hemisphere. 10,11,12 Here, we analyze data from a latitudinal transect of weather radars spanning the entire coastline of Eastern Australia to determine the magnitude, directions, timing, and variability of bird migration compared to that of Northern Hemisphere migration systems. Bird movements exhibited sequential seasonal peaks along a latitudinal gradient with seasonally contrasting flight directions, confirming that a structured bird migration system exists. Three features were distinct from Northern Hemisphere migrations. First, distinct movements occurred around sunrise with comparable magnitudes to nocturnal migration, likely representing a strong diurnal component to the bird movements. Second, migration intensity averaged 0.06 million birds km−1 in autumn, much lower than Northern Hemisphere migrations. 11,12,13 Finally, flight directions were more dispersed, and the timing and amount of migration were highly variable between years compared to Northern Hemisphere migration systems, perhaps in response to variable climate. 7 This first quantification of continental-scale movements in Australia revealed a distinctive migration system, and it suggests that much remains to be discovered about the ecological and evolutionary factors shaping animal migrations in the Southern Hemisphere. • Weather radar network reveals a structured bird migration system in East Australia • Sequential migration peaks move latitudinally, and directions reverse seasonally • Magnitude is smaller than in the Northern Hemisphere but with larger daytime activity • Direction, timing, and magnitude vary more between years than in North America Shi et al. show that a structured migration system with seasonal peaks and contrasting flight directions exists in Eastern Australia. Purpose: The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of employers' attitudes to, knowledge about, and policies relating to employing someone with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine employers located in Australia from a range of backgrounds and different sized businesses. The interviews were thematically analysed. Results: Three themes were identified: Organisational policies (sub-themes: Recruitment - inherent requirements of the role vs risk mitigation; Recruitment strategies and targets; Disclosure; Accommodations needed or offered); Barriers & facilitators (sub-themes: Lack of knowledge about SCI; Physical accessibility; Workplace culture); Personal attitudes (sub-themes: Personal attitudes don't align with organisational policy; Personal experiences informed understanding). Conclusions: Organisational policies and practices of the employers' organisations, and workplace culture impact the likelihood of someone with a SCI being employed, particularly in relation to recruitment, employment targets, and available accommodations. Individual staff attitudes and knowledge also influence this process. Multi-faceted approaches are needed to increase the employment of people with SCI. Doctors running late may convey a lack of respect which can impair the therapeutic relationship. This study examines how surgeons address lateness in consultations with patients. We analyzed 52 consultation recordings from a range of surgical specialties in an Australian metropolitan setting. Conversation analysis was used to analyze interactional sequences where lateness was addressed. Six sequences were identified within four recordings. The two consultations with two apologies include a surgeon and registrar apologizing in a neurosurgical consultation and a surgeon apologizing twice within a colorectal consultation. Apologies were either accepted or responded to with an account for not accepting the apology. When these accounts were made, consultations could only progress when patients accepted an explanation for lateness or the degree of complainability about lateness was reduced. The infrequent occurrence of apologies for lateness, and the way in which these sequences unfolded when they did occur, suggest that there is greater acceptability of lateness for surgeons than in ordinary social situations. Grandparents are an important source of childcare worldwide, but international patterns vary. We examine how demographic characteristics of parents, and of grandparents, factor into grandparent care provision considering the cultural assumptions and policy settings Australian families live within. Using the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey, we identify determinants of both the demand for and the supply of grandparent childcare in Australia (4266 grandparents and 9822 parents). Results suggest that grandmothers and mothers, as much or more than fathers and mothers, balance their reciprocal participation in employment and childcare. University‐educated grandmothers are more likely to provide regular childcare (at least once a week) and university‐educated mothers are more likely to draw upon it, inconsistent with research in other countries. It appears grandparents are stepping in as both “mother savers” and “system savers,” suggesting a need for more public policy support for Australian working mothers to capitalise on their increasingly high educational attainment. Background: Indigenous people in high-income countries have worse eye health outcomes when compared to non-Indigenous people, contributing to ongoing socioeconomic disadvantage. Although services have been designed to address these disparities, it is unclear if they have undergone comprehensive economic evaluation. Our scoping review aimed to identify the number, type, quality, and main findings of such evaluations. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library Database, the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, EconLit, and relevant grey literature were systematically searched as per our pre-registered protocol. All economic evaluations of real or model services designed to meet the eye care needs of Indigenous populations in high-income countries were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed quality using the Quality of Health Economic Studies instrument. Results: We identified 20 studies evaluating services for Indigenous populations in Australia (n = 9), Canada (n = 7), and the United States of America (n = 4). Common services included diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening through fundus photographs acquired in local primary health care clinics (n = 7) or by mobile teams (n = 6), and general eye care through teleophthalmology (n = 2), outreach ophthalmology (n = 2) or an Indigenous health care clinic optometrist (n = 1). These services were economically favourable in 85% of comparisons with conventional alternatives, mainly through reduced costs of travel, in-person consults, and vision loss. Only four studies assessed the benefits of increased patient uptake. Only five included patient evaluations, but none integrated these into their quantitative analysis. Methodological issues included no stated economic perspective (n = 10), no sensitivity analysis (n = 12), no discounting (n = 9), inappropriate measurement of costs (n = 13) or outcomes (n = 5), and unjustified assumptions (n = 15). Conclusion: Several Indigenous eye care services are cost-effective, particularly remote DR screening. Other services are promising but require evaluation, with attention to avoid common methodological pitfalls. Well-designed evaluations can guide the allocation of scarce resources to services with demonstrated effectiveness and sustainability. Background: Globally, digital transformation has been sweeping through healthcare in recent years. Reflecting this global change, Australia's health and social care sector is also undergoing rapid digitalisation. Digital approaches can enhance care planning and coordination activities, as well as improve efficiencies in documentation and coordination of care. As the aged care environment continues to become digitalised into the future, there is an expectation that nurses practise the delicate art and science of compassionate caregiving in a technology-proliferated environment where care planning, provisioning, and documenting require digital knowledge and skills. Aim: To explore the perspectives and expectations of nurses working in residential aged care setting regarding the utilisation of technology to enhance care at the end-of-life. Methods: A qualitative descriptive research study design based on the secondary analysis of data collected as part of a larger study. Data collection was conducted using six semi-structured interviews and 11 focus group discussions with care workers, nurses, and nursing managers working in Australian residential aged care setting. Results: A total of 64 participants took part in this study. Overall, four themes were generated from the data as following: engagement with various digital systems and platforms; 2) ambivalence toward technology; 3) challenges and concerns in technology use; and 4) anticipated technology roles in end-of-life care. This study found that, nurses in Australian RAC are open to engage with technologies for end-of-life provision, despite some ambivalence and challenges encountered in the process. Conclusion: Nurses in residential aged care have an important role in end-of-life care of many older Australians. Digital approaches offer care and coordination opportunities however require the aged care sector and nurses to take up these opportunities. While nurses demonstrate openness to technology, focus needs to be placed on technology use support. This presents an opportunity for nurses to actively shape the future of digital innovations in aged care, ensuring high-quality, compassionate care for residents in their final stages of life. A new genus and species of the Anguinidae, Turbiditylenchus corticeus n. gen., n. sp., was isolated from the bark of Eucalyptus macrorhyncha from southeastern Australia. Turbiditylenchus corticeus is readily differentiated from all recognised anguinid genera and is characterised primarily by a slender body, lateral field with six incisures, an anteriorly flattened lip region continuous with the body, delicate stylet 7.9-9.9 μm long, muscular median bulb containing a strongly refractive valve, post-vulval uterine sac 1.87-4.4 times vulval body diam., conical tail with pointed tip, and males with leptoderan bursa and spicules 20.5-25.8 μm in length. The phylogenetic relationships of the new species with other anguinid lineages were reconstructed using sequences of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA), the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS; comprising ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and partial large subunit ribosomal RNA (28S rRNA D2-D3) genes based on Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses. These analyses demonstrate the new species represents a lineage distinct from all other anguinids. Based on phylogenetic results we also transfer Ditylenchus parvicauda Gu, Ma, Castillo & Munawar, 2024 and Ditylenchus gracicauda Gu, Ma, Castillo & Munawar, 2024 to Ditylenchoides Subbotin & Ryss, 2024 as Ditylenchoides parvicauda n. comb. and Ditylenchoides gracicauda n. comb. Introduction Methods Results Conclusion The techniques employed in palliative radiation therapy are highly variable, ranging from basic (2D/3D‐conformal) to more advanced (beam modulation and stereotactic techniques), and their relative use has not previously been formally investigated at a national level. The purpose of this work was to assess the current utilisation of palliative techniques and technologies in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ).A voluntary, anonymous, internet‐based, RANZCR approved survey was offered to all practising radiation oncology (RO) Fellows in ANZ. Participants selected their preferred methods of managing patients in five case studies involving bone, brain, lung metastases and locally advanced lung cancer.From October 2022 to February 2023, 146 of 485 eligible participants (30%) responded. In all, 61% and 81% would treat an uncomplicated breast cancer solitary spinal metastasis with stereotactic body radiation therapy routinely and ideally, respectively; 11% and 32% would treat a solitary lung cancer brain metastasis with dedicated stereotactic radiosurgery routinely and ideally; 36% and 56% would treat multiple low‐volume brain metastases with a stereotactic technique routinely and ideally. There was negligible difference in the routine and preferred use of advanced technologies for a solitary bowel cancer lung metastasis; 69% and 77% would treat a locally advanced primary lung cancer with an advanced technique routinely and ideally. Relative to Australia, NZ ROs routinely treat uncomplicated solitary spinal metastases (P < 0.001), solitary brain metastases (P < 0.001), multiple low‐volume brain metastases (P < 0.02), and locally advanced primary lung cancer (P < 0.001) more commonly with basic technologies, mainly due to limited local availability of advanced technology and departmental waiting lists.Participants generally favoured treating with advanced techniques and technologies in palliative settings, if available, but there were notable disparities between the two countries. Despite the burgeoning interest in eco-social work, there is a dearth of publications exploring eco-social work practice with children and young people who experience violence, abuse, and neglect. Social workers are committed to service delivery to children and young people and, as such, are ideally placed to create and expand on eco-social work practice. The authors argue that therapeutic gardening groups with children and young people who have experienced abuse and violence deserve a place in the eco-social work field. This article describes an established gardening program that successfully ran for five years. In this article we summarise the group work program, illuminate children's and young people's experiences of the groups, and share insights and reflections from the facilitators of these groups. Lithothamnion mirabile is currently considered a heterotypic synonym of L. muelleri. Three of the 14 specimens and additional fragments comprising the holotype of L. mirabile were selected for DNA sequencing as they best matched the protologue. The three 263-base pair rbcL sequences were distinct from each other, and were classified in the order Hapalidiales, but none were resolved in Lithothamnion. One sequenced specimen belongs in Roseolithon and was selected as the lectotype; thus we propose R. mirabile (Foslie) comb. nov. Another sequenced specimen groups with Phymatolithopsis and the third is well resolved in an undescribed genus of Hapalidiales sister to Boreolithothamnion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions Current trends in the addiction field reflect a significant emphasis on the workforce development and education. There are already some data about university‐based addiction studies programs, but not much from Australasia.The aim is to provide an overview and describe the academic programs for addiction professionals in Australia and Aotearoa NZ. The research was conducted in 2017 and updated in 2023. Firstly, university websites were searched using pre‐defined keywords, followed by a content analysis of the identified programs. The data were analysed and interpreted by using descriptive statistics.We found 21 universities in Australia (13) and Aotearoa NZ (8) where 46 single programs are provided. There are three bachelor programs, nine masters, and the majority of degrees include (post)graduate certificates and diplomas. No doctorate programs are identified. The taught courses provide comprehensive coverage of the addiction field topics. Twelve programs state clearly that there is clinical practice/internship included. Application to most programs requires completion of a relevant degree and in some cases possible clinical experience.In comparison to educational options in other regions, we observe a trend towards preparing university graduates for the workforce, thereby expanding the range of programs at lower levels. Most programs possibly represent clinically oriented education primarily specialising in addictions, and graduate programs in addictions for professionals with other disciplinary bases. Great emphasis is given to the quality standards of education, and also to relationship between education and labour market. Findings help opening opportunities to collaborate globally. Classic spatial theory expects parties to converge on the same ideological position given certain assumptions. Many of these assumptions fail to hold in most countries, which may account for why this prediction frequently fails to materialise. Due to a unique combination of institutions, Australia presents the best chance for the theory to work: all votes must flow to either of the two major parties, parties approximate unitary actors, and elections see turnout as high as any democracy. If convergence should happen anywhere, it should be in Australia, and many argue that Australian parties indeed fulfil this prediction. However, in contrast to much of the literature, we do not find Australian politics to be unusually centrist. Background: As a prominent part of complementary and alternative medicine, Chinese Medicine (CM) has proved its strengths in treating a diverse range of acute and chronic medical conditions and is at present recognized in 196 countries and territories worldwide. In 2012, Australia regulated the CM profession under the National Regulation and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) by legislation and reports quarterly demographic information about individual CM practitioners so to ensure public interest, although research examining the change of CM workforce in Australia has been scarce. Objective: This study aims to investigate the construction of the CM workforce in Australia and more importantly, evaluated its development in the last decade to capture the trajectory and trend in the present period and future potential changes. Methods: Data were sourced from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) annual reports and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA) registration statistics from 2012 to 2023. A descriptive analysis was conducted with demographic variables, including profession, age, and gender, and chi-square tests and linear regression modeling were carried out to assess the variations between regions and across years. Results: The population of CM practitioners in 2022/2023 stagnated with slight decrease to 4,823, in contrast to the increase rate of 2.9% in the whole health care community. The number of young CM registrants (<35 y) shrank by 37.5% from 691 in 2012 to 432 in 2023. In comparison with other health care professions, CM comprises the smallest proportion of the population aged younger than 25 (0.2%) and the largest proportion aged older than 65 years (16.2%), advancing into an aging era. Conclusions: This study indicates a worrying potential decline in CM workforce in Australia, which is likely to be further exacerbated by the lack of new graduates and rise of median age among practitioners. Meanwhile, continued advancement in Western medicine technology and standards requires substantial efforts to increase both a better understanding of CM and demonstration of its efficacy. Furthermore, greater effort is needed to recruit and educate new young CM practitioners in Australia and to broaden the international training pipeline for a sustainable development of CM practice. A new species of Ovulidae J. Fleming, 1822 from the Middle Miocene of Victoria, Australia, is reported. The species is provisionally placed in the genus Cuspivolva Cate, 1973, which, if confirmed, will be the first record of this genus in the fossil record of this part of the world. Background: Identifying language disorders earlier can help children receive the support needed to improve developmental outcomes and quality of life. Despite the prevalence and impacts of persistent language disorder, there are surprisingly no robust predictor tools available. This makes it difficult for researchers to recruit young children into early intervention trials, which in turn impedes advances in providing effective early interventions to children who need it. Aims: To validate externally a predictor set of six variables previously identified to be predictive of language at 11 years of age, using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) birth cohort. Also, to examine whether additional LSAC variables arose as predictive of language outcome. Methods & Procedures: A total of 5107 children were recruited to LSAC with developmental measures collected from 0 to 3 years. At 11–12 years, children completed the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, 4th Edition, Recalling Sentences subtest. We used SuperLearner to estimate the accuracy of six previously identified parent‐reported variables from ages 2–3 years in predicting low language (sentence recall score ≥ 1.5 SD below the mean) at 11–12 years. Random forests were used to identify any additional variables predictive of language outcome. Outcomes & Results: Complete data were available for 523 participants (52.20% girls), 27 (5.16%) of whom had a low language score. The six predictors yielded fair accuracy: 78% sensitivity (95% confidence interval (CI) = [58, 91]) and 71% specificity (95% CI = [67, 75]). These predictors relate to sentence complexity, vocabulary and behaviour. The random forests analysis identified similar predictors. Conclusions & Implications: We identified an ultra‐short set of variables that predicts 11–12‐year language outcome with 'fair' accuracy. In one of few replication studies of this scale in the field, these methods have now been conducted across two population‐based cohorts, with consistent results. An imminent practical implication of these findings is using these predictors to aid recruitment into early language intervention studies. Future research can continue to refine the accuracy of early predictors to work towards earlier identification in a clinical context. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: There are no robust predictor sets of child language disorder despite its prevalence and far‐reaching impacts. A previous study identified six variables collected at age 2–3 years that predicted 11–12‐year language with 75% sensitivity and 81% specificity, which warranted replication in a separate cohort. What this study adds to the existing knowledge: We used machine learning methods to identify a set of six questions asked at age 2–3 years with ≥ 71% sensitivity and specificity for predicting low language outcome at 11–12 years, now showing consistent results across two large‐scale population‐based cohort studies. Background: The dialect spoken by children influences diagnostic decision‐making regarding the identification and severity of speech sound disorder (SSD). Aims: The primary objective was to review papers that examined the influence of dialect on the identification of SSD in Vietnamese‐speaking children. Methods & Procedures: Five studies of mono‐ and multilingual Vietnamese‐speaking children living in Vietnam and Australia were reviewed to examine the influence of dialect on the assessment and analysis children's speech. The main Vietnamese dialects (Standard, Northern, Central, Southern) differ in the production of consonants, vowels and tones. Main contribution: Most speech assessments define correct production using the standard dialect of a language. Insights from recent studies of Vietnamese provide recommendations for also considering dialect in diagnostic decision‐making. First, we recommend adding column(s) to the assessment score sheet that includes the dialectal variants spoken by adults in the child's family or community. Second, we calculate the accuracy of production twice, based on the standard form and dialectal form. Third, we report the percentage of consonants correct—standard (PCC‐S) and percentage of consonants correct—dialect (PCC‐D). Conclusions & Implications: Diagnostic decision‐making is influenced by dialectal variation in children's speech, so speech and language therapists need to compare standard and dialectal productions when undertaking assessments, analysis and diagnostic decision‐making. Aim: To determine the incidence and presenting features of type 1 diabetes mellitus and diabetic ketoacidosis in a paediatric population serviced by a regional health service in Queensland, Australia. Methods: All patients less than 16 years old diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus between 01 January 2015 and 31 December 2021 were included in this retrospective, observational study. The electronic medical records of each patient were reviewed to collect data on demographics, presentation and ongoing diabetes care. Results: Sixty‐four paediatric patients were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus during the study period, giving an incidence of 25 cases per 100 000 person years. Half the patients presented with diabetic ketoacidosis, with 14 (22% of the total cohort) presenting in severe diabetic ketoacidosis. There was no significant increase in the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus or proportion of patients with diabetic ketoacidosis across the years of the study. Patients that had a delayed diagnosis had an increased likelihood of presenting with severe diabetic ketoacidosis. Conclusion: Incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in the paediatric population in this regional centre in Queensland, Australia, is similar to national data. High proportions of patients presenting with diabetic ketoacidosis and severe diabetic ketoacidosis were identified in the study population, with delayed diagnosis, a risk factor for severe diabetic ketoacidosis. Aims: To describe an Aboriginal cultural immersion delivered to dietetics students at a large university in Australia and assess its effectiveness as a method to teach Aboriginal history, culture, diet, and health in dietetics. Methods: Taking a strength‐based approach, Aboriginal processes of learning were privileged, with the cultural immersion being co‐designed with immersion educators, a First Nations researcher, and dietetics academic. The cultural immersion consisted of an opening ceremony and four stations of yarning, weaving, bush tucker, and artefacts/medicines. A mixed‐methods approach was used, with triangulation of data from pre‐ and postsurveys, station mapping, and focus group interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data were simultaneously analysed from participating first‐year Master of Nutrition and Dietetics students and then drawn together for an integrated understanding of the impact of the cultural immersion on student learnings. Results: Fifty‐three students completed pre‐ and postsurveys and 36 participated in focus groups. Through sharing lived experiences, learning through culture, and keeping sessions practical and Aboriginal leadership, each cultural immersion station utilised Aboriginal processes of learning that meaningfully engaged students with Aboriginal education content, appreciate holistic health and increased their general knowledge on Aboriginal history, culture, diet, and health (all p < 0.001). Conclusion: Cultural immersion is one teaching method to enhance student knowledges and can be a part of a programmatic and integrated approach that embeds Aboriginal content throughout the whole curriculum. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine expectations, perceptions and attitudes about dietetics services among the Australian and New Zealand public, to provide insights for building a future dietetics workforce that will meet consumer needs. Methods: A cross‐sectional, anonymous, online survey was employed to gain perspectives of a representative sample of Australian and New Zealand adults. Questions were purposely designed to collect views regarding sources of dietary information, expectations of dietetics service providers and factors influencing choice of dietetics service provider. Data were analysed descriptively and using Pearson's chi‐square test to assess relationships between categorical variables. Free‐text responses were analysed using content analysis. Results: Of 2601 respondents, approximately one third (32%) had seen a dietitian. Doctors were the most trusted sources of dietary information (87%), particularly with participants over 60 years (χ(1) = 44.168, V = 0.130, p < 0.001). Cost was the most frequently reported factor influencing choice of dietetics services (56%), with 88% of respondents interested in accessing a dietitian, preferably in‐person (64%), if they could do so for no cost. Participants anticipated that dietitians would offer services like meal plans (59%) and nutritional analysis (48%) as well as weight and other body measurements (56%). Some expectations such as blood tests (54%) were outside the usual scope of dietetic practice. Conclusion: The results of this study have implications for practising dietitians, dietetics educators, and funders of dietetics services. Aim: Private practice is one of the most rapidly growing, but under‐researched employment sectors for graduate dietitians in Australia, limiting evidence‐based workforce development. This scoping review examines existing international literature to gain an understanding of the current private practice workforce size, distribution, demography and workforce development considerations, including competencies, supply and demand, remuneration and professional development activities. Methods: The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, EMCARE, PsycInfo (Ovid) and grey literature were systematically searched in August 2023 using key search terms to identify studies for inclusion. Articles were included if they related to private practice dietetics and described an aspect of workforce. Original research, government and organisational reports, statements of practice and websites providing governmental or organisational statistics were included. A directed content analysis and qualitative constant comparison technique were used to deductively map intelligence sources against a workforce development framework. A gap analysis was also conducted to provide a focus for future workforce development research. Results: A total of 72 peer‐reviewed and grey literature sources were included, with 65% of the studies being Australian‐based publications. Private practice dietetics research interest has increased in the last decade. Despite a breadth of published sources, this review found little published data on workforce size, distribution, demography, supply, demand, continued professional development and remuneration, indicating a significant gap in the evidence base. Existing literature focuses on workforce challenges and barriers, the work of private practice dietitians, with limited exploration of competency requirements for graduate private practitioners. Conclusions: The literature on the private practice dietetics workforce is lacking worldwide, which constrains evidenced‐based workforce development initiatives. Aim: Objective structured clinical examinations have long been used in dietetics education. This observational study aims to describe the development, deployment, feasibility and validity of assessment using an oral interview in place of traditional objective structured clinical examinations, and to determine the ability of this assessment to identify students who are either not ready for placement or may require early support and/or remediation. Methods: Student assessment data were collected over a two‐and‐a‐half‐year period and used to test the predictive ability of an oral interview to determine dietetic placement outcomes and highlight a need for early remediation. Descriptive statistics as well as a between‐group one‐way ANOVA was used to describe results. Results: A total of 169 students participated in the oral interview and subsequent medical nutrition therapy placement over the study period. Significant differences in oral interview score were seen between students who passed placement and students who passed with remediation or those who failed. Oral interview performance was able to predict placement outcome, yet required less resources than traditional objective structured clinical examinations. Objective: To understand how competence, self-efficacy, enjoyment and motivation relates to physical activity behavior during transition from school to university. Participants: Health science students (n = 558) studying first year biology at an Australian university. Methods: Cross-sectional correlational survey design using five self-report questionnaires to establish relationships between a physical activity index and motivational variables. Results: Self-reported physical activity index scores of satisfactory or above were achieved by 80% of students with scores significantly higher for males than females. Enjoyment, self-efficacy and competence were predictive of physical activity index scores across genders. Conclusions: The physical activity index is a useful measure of activity dimensions across a variety of physical activities. Health science students need to underpin health messages with personal practice in modeling a healthy lifestyle. Only 20% of the estimated 5 million species of insects on Earth are named and yet insects are poorly represented in protected area assessments, and insect declines are of concern globally.Here, we explore how to increase the discovery of new species and understanding of this group through analysis of 10,097 tropical rainforest bark beetles (Scolytinae) from eight different ecological studies between 2000 and 2018 in the Australian Wet Tropics.Of the 107 species identified, 58 are undescribed: an increase of 37% on the 156 species known from Australia. Rarefaction indicates doubling sampling would increase the number of species by 17. As hypothesised, new species are significantly smaller, less abundant and less widespread than described species making them more extinction‐prone than named species.Flight interception traps collected 84% of individuals and 98% of species confirming the effectiveness of a single sampling method for some beetles. Increased locations and collection from the canopy may sample further species rather than additional collecting methods.Scolytines are relatively well studied with taxonomists at the forefront of using modern methods to resolve formerly intractable groups. Hence, these new species are more likely to be named than others in many other beetle groups where taxonomy has largely stalled.To increase species description rates and to avoid most species becoming extinct before being named, we call on taxonomists to use new character systems provided by DNA methods and advances in the rapidly developing field of artificial intelligence. Background: To report the clinicopathological features and epidemiology of iris melanoma in Queensland, Australia. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 86 patients with iris melanoma treated between 2001 and 2022 at the Queensland Ocular Oncology Service, Brisbane, Australia. Main outcome measures included demographics, clinical and phenotypic features, age‐adjusted incidence and relative survival. Results: Eighty‐six patients (63% female) were included. Mean age was 54 years (range 17–82 years). The majority of patients (97%) were Caucasian, with blue eyes, fair skin and Fitzpatrick Skin Type I or II. Demographic features and clinical history showed a tendency for high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure in the cohort. Histopathology was available in 69 cases (82%), and of these, 77% tumours were of spindle cell origin, with low‐risk genetic profiles. Patients were followed for a mean of 8 years (median 7, range 1–21 years) after diagnosis, and only one case of metastasis was documented. Conclusions: The association of iris freckles, history of UVR exposure and dermatologic findings supports the role of UVR in iris melanoma. Occupation and avocation history, as well as evaluation of iris freckles may offer an easily accessible way of stratifying the risk of an individual for development of UVR‐related uveal melanoma. To estimate the number of pregnancies complicated by vasa previa annually in nine developed countries, and the potential preventable stillbirths associated with undiagnosed cases. We also assessed the potential impact of universal screening for vasa previa on reducing stillbirth rates. We utilized nationally-reported birth and stillbirth data from public databases in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Sweden, Portugal, and Australia. Using the annual number of births and the number and rate of stillbirths in each country, and the published incidence of vasa previa and stillbirth rates associated with the condition, we estimated the expected annual number of cases of vasa previa, those that would result in a livebirth, and the potential preventable stillbirths with and without prenatal diagnosis. There were 6,099,118 total annual births with 32,550 stillbirths, corresponding to a summary stillbirth rate of 5.34 per 1,000 pregnancies. The total expected vasa previa cases was estimated to be 5,007 (95 % CI: 3,208–7,201). The estimated number of livebirths would be 4,937 (95 % CI: 3,163–7,100) and 3,610 (95 % CI: 2,313–5,192) in pregnancies with and without a prenatal diagnosis of VP. This implies that prenatal diagnosis would potentially prevent 1,327 (95 % CI: 850–1,908) stillbirths in these countries, corresponding to a potential reduction in stillbirth rate by 4.72 % (95 % CI: 3.80–5.74) if routine screening for vasa previa was performed. Our study highlights the importance of universal screening for vasa previa and suggests that prenatal diagnosis of prevention could potentially reduce 4–5 % of stillbirths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have reported that mode of delivery, particularly cesarean delivery (CD), is associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. This study evaluates behavioral and neuropsychological test scores in children based on mode of delivery. Children enrolled in the Raine Study from Western Australia, born between 1989 and 1992 by instrumental vaginal delivery (IVD), elective CD, and non-elective CD, were compared to those with spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD). The primary outcome was the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) administered at age 10. Secondary outcomes included evaluations of language, motor function, cognition, and autistic traits. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate score differences by mode of delivery adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and Poisson regression was used to evaluate for increased risk of clinical deficit. Of 2,855 children, 1770 (62.0 %) were delivered via SVD, 480 (16.8 %) via IVD, 346 (12.1 %) via elective CD, and 259 (9.1 %) via non-elective CD. Non-elective CD was associated with higher (worse) CBCL Internalizing (+2.09; 95 % CI 0.49, 3.96; p=0.01) scores, and elective CD was associated with lower (worse) McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development (MAND) (−3.48; 95 % CI −5.61, −1.35; p=0.001) scores. Differences were not seen in other outcomes, and increased risk of clinical deficit was not observed with either the CBCL Internalizing or MAND scores. Differences in behavior and motor function were observed in children delivered by CD, but given that score differences were not associated with increased incidence of clinical deficit, clinical significance may be limited. There is currently limited research on early, intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) within Australia. The purpose of this paper was to provide a programmatic description and preliminary findings of an intervention approach which provides a high level of intensity of intervention to preschool aged children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A total of 154 children with autism participated in the program from 2011 to 2022. At the group level, children who received 27 hr per week of intervention showed significant gains on standardized cognitive and adaptive behavior measures during an average one year of intervention. Further examination of the response to intervention at an individual level demonstrated that 84% of children showed an acceleration in their rate of learning during intervention, with 52% more than doubling their rate of learning in this time. Age was determined to predict improvement in developmental trajectory, but intake cognitive abilities did not. In general, children who commenced intervention at a younger age made substantial improvements in their rate of learning, but children who commenced intervention at an older age made even greater improvements relative to their skills at commencement. The results as well as limitations given the exploratory nature of this paper are discussed, along with implications for addressing the needs of young autistic children in Australia. Language is important in health policy development. Policy changes in Australia to increase cervical screening offers a timely case example to explore the function of inclusive language in health policy. Gender and sexuality diverse people with a cervix have been largely invisible within health promotion programs, which has led to reduced awareness of, and access to, cervical screening. Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 key informants between April and October 2022 about the role of inclusive language in cervical screening policy, promotion, and delivery in the context of a national program to promote cervical screening. Three themes were identified from what key informants believed to be the role of inclusive language: (1) the common goal of inclusive language as policy advocacy for broader inclusivity; (2) the inevitable partiality of inclusive language in policy as an opportunity to start conversation; and (3) policy as a bridge between essential but diffuse components of the health sector with multidirectional influences. Established research supports collaborative patient-clinician communication as a means of improving pain management and decreasing opioid use by patients with chronic pain. However, much of this scholarship emphasises clinicians' capacities to shape and improve communication; limited research investigates patients' roles in this process. Drawing on 40 ethnographic observations of patient-clinician interactions, clinical spaces and case conferences within one specialist pain clinic in Brisbane, Australia, this paper investigates how and why patients present themselves in particular ways within consultations. Our theoretical lens combines concepts from Goffman on patienthood and stigma with Foucauldian theories of pastoral and disciplinary power. Findings suggest that elements of the clinical environment – namely posters – usher patients towards presenting in what we conceptualise as the 'good pain patient' role. In this role, patients demonstrate that they are moral, responsible, and contributing members of society. Yet, such a role is problematic to opening communication, with the role constraining what is socially acceptable for patients with chronic pain to say, do, or feel. In recognising how clinical contexts facilitate problematic good pain patient presentations, this paper directs attention to the spatial and relational nature of implicit clinical expectations and constrained good pain patient presentations. The consumption of performance and image-enhancing drugs (PIEDs) is commonly pathologised in public health discourse as stemming from an unhealthy relationship to masculinity, and is often framed as intrinsically 'risky' and fundamentally at odds with 'good health'. This article examines Australian health promotion materials on PIEDs to analyse their role in shaping notions of good health, normal gender and appropriate self-improvement. To do so, it draws on the work of Butler, Law and Latour to consider how these materials co-constitute men and their health, often in problematic ways. First, we examine the ways in which PIEDs are constituted via a politics of the 'natural', then consider how the health promotion materials on PIEDs participate in the regulation of appropriate, healthy masculinity, and conclude by examining how adolescent masculinity is co-constituted with PIEDs. We observe a key tension between health promotion's avowed interest in improvement and optimisation and its treatment of PIED consumers as aberrant, vulnerable and insecure subjects whose drive to enhance and optimise is characterised by pathology and addiction. We conclude by arguing that health promotion materials on PIEDs fail to acknowledge the exceedingly normative character of enhancement practices in contemporary society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global drug policy is in a period of change. Human rights can play an important role in such change, but more work is needed to understand the how rights work and why they might come to matter. Drawing on insights from a major study on drug policy and human rights, I argue that important new dynamics in respect of how drugs are thought to relate to health are emerging, including a conceptualisation of some drugs as capable of generating or improving health, rather than undermining it. Drugs are in some cases coming to be understood not as the origin of social problems but as the solution for them. I introduce the concept of 'solutionisation' as a tool for understanding the mechanisms by which human rights shapes ontologies, positioning 'solutionisation' as corollary and counterpart to Carol Bacchi's work on policy 'problematisation' (Bacchi [2009]. I argue that both 'problematisation' and 'solutionisation' have value for sociological analyses of human rights and that we need to pay careful attention to the co-constitutive dimensions of drugs and human rights, to understand how norms about health, self and subjects are made, sustained, and brought under pressure. This paper examines whether the motivations and experiences of 'anti-diet' dietitians and psychologists represent a paradigm shift in healthcare. We conducted four 2-hour, discipline-specific focus groups with a total of 16 female participants residing in Australia. Our reflexive thematic analysis generated four themes that we consider to be stages of a weight-neutral paradigm shift: (1) a recognition of a mismatch between one's weight-centred training and one's lived experience of diet culture, which subsequently informs (2) gut feelings that influence their decision to reject the weight-centric paradigm, thereby leading to (3) exploring the anti-diet knowledge base and then subsequently (4) promoting or advocating for the weight neutral paradigm. Our findings represent a four-stage paradigm shift in action; emphasising the significance of lived experience in the weight-neutral turn, as well as differences in symbolic power between health professionals. Future research should focus on potential ruptures or conflicts within the weight-neutral paradigm itself, and look more deeply into the experiences of other health professionals who are critical of the weight-centred approach. Background: Anxiety is common, however, the effect of chronicity of anxiety on dementia has not been explored. This study aims to assess the longitudinal relationship between chronic versus resolved versus new onset anxiety, and all‐cause dementia risk. Methods: A total of 2132 participants with mean age 76 years from the Hunter Community Study were recruited. Anxiety was measured using Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10). Dementia was defined as per International Classification of Disease—10 codes. The Fine–Gray subdistribution hazard model was computed to assess dementia risk, while adjusting for the competing risk of death. Results: Chronic anxiety and new onset anxiety at follow‐up were associated with all‐cause dementia risk (HR 2.80, 95% CI 1.35–5.72 and HR 3.20, 95% CI 1.40–7.45 respectively) with an average time to dementia diagnosis of 10 years (SD = 1.7) whereas resolved anxiety was not. In subgroup analyses, these results were driven particularly by chronic and new anxiety among participants below the age of 70 years (HR 4.58, 95% CI 01.12–18.81 and HR 7.21, 95%CI 1.86–28.02 respectively). Sensitivity analyses imputing missing data and addressing reverse causation gave very similar results. Conclusion: Chronic and new anxiety were associated with increased risk of all‐cause dementia, and this association was significant in those 70 years and younger. However, the resolved anxiety at follow‐up reduced the risk, similar to that of the non‐exposed group. Objectives: While early diagnosis is fundamental to the development of children with developmental disabilities (DD), limited attention has been paid to immigrant parents' experience of early encounters with systems when they begin seeking supports for their children with DD. This study aimed to contribute to better understanding of immigrant parents' experiences of early encounters with services for families and children with suspected or diagnosed DD. Design: A longitudinal, qualitative approach was adopted. Over 12 months, multiple interviews were conducted with four immigrant families with children aged between two and four years who were attending a mobile playgroup offering early learning supports for children with suspected or diagnosed DD in communities with low access to formal supports. During the first three months of the study, families were accompanied by the first author on weekly visits to the playgroup. Participant observations and informal discussions with staff delivering early intervention supports via the playgroup provided further insight into families' initial and on-going encounters with services and supports. During the remaining nine months, multiple interviews were conducted with participating families, to document their on-going experiences and encounters with medical practitioners and therapists. Results: Thematic analysis of data generated four key themes: Initial encounters with medical professionals, Confusion and 'missed' diagnosis, Gaps in understanding, collaboration and communication, and Families' desire to learn and implement strategies. Conclusion: Families made concerted efforts to locate appropriate supports. They also faced barriers including a lack of openness and genuine consultation, particularly in their encounters with health professionals. These barriers resulted in a level of mistrust and detachment from formalised supports. Results highlight the critical importance for health professionals of 'tuning into' family concerns through relationship-based approaches, in order to establish shared understanding and mutual respect between professionals and families, particularly for immigrant families seeking support for their young children. Objective: Frailty is one of the most significant challenges to healthy ageing. Aboriginal Australians experience some of the highest levels of frailty worldwide, and despite this, no studies have explored frailty from an Aboriginal perspective. This is important because Aboriginal understandings and priorities in frailty may differ from Western/mainstream frailty frameworks. Furthermore, this lack of research severely hampers healthcare planning and service delivery. As a starting point, this study aims to understand the experiences, attitudes, and perceptions that Aboriginal older adults hold regarding frailty. Design: A qualitative study that utilized the Indigenous research method of Yarning for data collection as a culturally appropriate process for engaging Aboriginal peoples. Yarning circles and one-on-one yarns with 22 Aboriginal adults aged 45+ years living in one Australian capital city took place online and over the phone to explore the views that Aboriginal adults hold around frailty. Data were analysed thematically by Aboriginal researchers. Results: Seven key thematic areas were identified: (1) Keep in with culture; (2) Physical markers of frailty; (3) Frailty throughout the life course; (4) Social, cultural, and psychological understandings of frailty; (5) We want information about frailty; (6) Appropriate and positive wording; (7) Frailty assessment. Conclusions: There was interest and engagement in the concept of frailty by Aboriginal older adults and approaches to frailty that extend beyond the physical to address cognitive, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual domains are likely to be more acceptable to this population. Culture and community connectivity are essential elements in preventing and alleviating frailty and have wider positive implications for Aboriginal health and wellbeing. Existing tools in practice to assess frailty are not aligned with Aboriginal cultural norms. Culturally appropriate frailty assessment methods co-designed with the community which incorporate holistic and multidimensional approaches are urgently needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Research showed that ovarian cancer poses unique challenges to patients' care experiences and that patients' social networks could affect their care path significantly. The present study aimed to analyse the metaphors that patients used to signify the impact of the illness on their social relationships and the role of relationships in dealing with cancer. Design: Following a qualitative description approach we conducted 38 semi-structured interviews with Australian (14) and Italian (24) women diagnosed at different stages of ovarian cancer. Results: The analysis identified four themes bringing together the meanings expressed by participants' metaphors: Lack of comprehension and communication; Isolation, marginalisation, and self-isolation; Discrepancy between the private and public self; and Social relationships as empowerment resources. Conclusion: The polysemic nature of patients' metaphors captures both the empowering and especially disempowering role of social relationships in dealing with ovarian cancer. Results also show that metaphors are used to make sense of the impact of ovarian cancer on social relationships and to express different strategies for managing patients' networks.
