The mechanism of hydration of calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4·0.5H2O) to form gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) was studied by combining scanning 3D X‐ray diffraction (s3DXRD) and phase contrast tomography (PCT) to determine in situ the spatial and crystallographic relationship between these two phases. From s3DXRD measurements, the crystallographic structure, orientation and position of the crystalline grains in the sample during the hydration reaction were obtained, while the PCT reconstructions allowed visualization of the 3D shapes of the crystals during the reaction. This multi‐scale study unfolds structural and morphological evidence of the dissolution–precipitation process of the gypsum plaster system, providing insights into the reactivity of specific crystallographic facets of the hemihydrate. Microporous hybrid silica membranes are known to have superior (hydro)thermal and chemical stability. By incorporating metal ions, such as Ce 4+ and Ni 2+ into these membranes, their affinity and selectivity towards particular gases may be altered. To promote the dispersion of metal ions within the hybrid silica matrix, the sol–gel precursor N,N,N′,N′ -tetrakis-(3-(triethoxysilyl)-propyl)-malonamide (TTPMA) was synthesized. The malonamide ligands clearly coordinated the Ce 4+ and Ni 2+ metal centers and enhanced their dispersion. During annealing these metal centers redistributed into small nanosized grains of CeO 2 (<5 nm) and Ni 2 O 3 (<15 nm). These Ce-TTPMA and Ni-TTPMA membranes showed higher H 2 /N 2 permselectivities as compared to previously reported hybrid silica membranes based on the 1,2-bis-(triethoxysilyl)ethane precursor. The TTPMA-precursor was found suitable for membrane separation and can be a promising and versatile precursor for the incorporation of metal ions within hybrid silica matrices. Two-dimensional (2D) (hydro)oxide materials, that is, nanosheets, enable the preparation of advanced 2D materials and devices. The general synthesis route of nanosheets involves exfoliating layered metal (hydro)oxide crystals. This exfoliation process is considered to be time-consuming, hindering their industrial-scale production. Based on in situ exfoliation studies on the protonated layered titanate H1.07Ti1.73O4⋅H2O (HTO), it is now shown that ion intercalation-assisted exfoliation driven by chemical reaction provides a viable and fast route to isolated nanosheets. Contrary to the general expectation, data indicate that direct exfoliation of HTO occurs within seconds after mixing of the reactants, instead of proceeding via a swollen state as previously thought. These findings reveal that ion intercalation-assisted exfoliation driven by chemical reaction is a promising exfoliation route for large-scale synthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nucleation and growth of niobium pentaethoxide (NPE)-derived clusters in ethanol, through acid-catalyzed hydrolysis/condensation in the presence and absence of the silsesquioxane 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTESE), was monitored at 298-333 K by small-angle X-ray scattering. The data were analyzed with a newly derived model for polydisperse mass-fractal-like structures. At 298-313 K in the absence of BTESE the data indicated the development of relatively monodisperse NPE-derived structures with selfpreserving polydispersity during growth. The growth exponent was consistent with irreversible diffusion-limited cluster agglomeration. At 333 K the growth exponent was characteristic for fast-gelling reaction-limited cluster agglomeration. The reaction yielded substantially higher degrees of polydispersity. In the presence of BTESE the growth exponents were substantially smaller. The smaller growth exponent in this case is not consistent with irreversible Smoluchowski-type agglomeration. Instead, reversible Lifshitz-Slyozov-type agglomeration seems to be more consistent with the experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The common facets of anatase crystals are the (001) and (101) planes. However, the phase transformation from lepidocrocite-type titanate into anatase by hydrothermal processing yields an anatase microstructure with high concentration of exposed (010) planes. The phase transformation of a lepidocrocite-type protonated layered titanate (HTO) into anatase was studied using XRD, TEM, FTIR, and measurement of pH and zeta potential. It was found that HTO is proton-deficient. The phase transformation process begins after uptake of a sufficient number of protons into the lepidocrocite-type structure. With the uptake of protons new hydroxyl groups form on the internal surfaces of the layered titanate and result in a bilayer state of HTO. The phase transformation reaction is a topotactic dehydration reaction in which anatase forms and water is expelled by syneresis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The evolution of nanostructure in sol–gel derived lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and zirconia precursor sols at different hydrolysis ratios was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The shape of the clusters in the zirconia sol could be described by the length-polydisperse cylindrical form factor. The zirconia-based clusters were characterized by a cross-sectional radius, r 0, of 0.28nm and a practically monodisperse length of ca. 1.85nm. These clusters were probably constructed of zirconia-related tetrameric building blocks. Similar cylindrical structural motifs were observed in PZT precursor sols with [H2O]/[Zr+Ti]=9.26 and 27.6, but the polydispersity in length was much higher. Clear scattering contributions from Ti and Pb centers were not detected, which was interpreted in terms of a homogeneous distribution of unbound lead ions in solution and the relatively low scattering intensity from any Ti-based clusters or oligomers that may have been present in the sols. Calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) is a disordered, nanocrystalline material, acting as a primary binding phase in Portland cement. C-S-H and C-A-S-H (an Al-bearing substitute present in low-CO 2 cement) contain thin films of water on solid surfaces and inside nanopores. Water controls multiple chemical and mechanical properties of C-S-H, including drying shrinkage, ion transport, creep, and thermal behavior. Therefore, obtaining a fundamental understanding of its properties is essential. We applied a combination of inelastic incoherent neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to unravel water dynamics in synthetic C-(A)-S-H conditioned at five hydration states (from drier to more hydrated) and with three Ca/Si ratios (0.9, 1, and 1.3). Our results converge towards a picture where the evolution from thin layers of interfacial water to bulk-like capillary water is dampened by the structure of C-(A)-S-H. In particular, the hydrophilic Ca2+ sites organize the distribution of interfacial C-(A)-S-H water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: During electrodeposition of a more noble metal on top of a less noble one, the galvanic replacement reaction prevents the formation of pure metal layers. So when depositing Pt on top of Ni to make Ni|Pt multilayers, or when making segmented nanowires containing Ni and Pt, the galvanic replacement reaction needs to be suppressed. As is shown here, at a potential of −0.6V vs. Ag/AgCl (3M KCl) for the deposition of Pt, no Ni was replaced and Ni|Pt (micropatterned) multilayers and Ni|Pt|Ni segmented nanowires were formed. Magnetization measurements showed the presence of two ferromagnetic phases, which can be of use for switching applications in magnetic devices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The controlled crystallisation of struvite (MgNH4PO4∙6H2O) is a viable means for the recovery and recycling of phosphorus (P) from municipal and industrial wastewaters. However, an efficient implementation of this recovery method in water treatment systems requires a fundamental understanding of struvite crystallisation mechanisms, including the behavior and effect of metal contaminants during struvite precipitation. Here, we studied the crystallisation pathways of struvite from aqueous solutions using a combination of ex situ and in situ time-resolved synthesis and characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Struvite syntheses were performed both in the pure Mg-NH4-PO4 system as well as in the presence of cobalt (Co), which, among other metals, is typically present in waste streams targeted for P-recovery. Our results show that in the pure system and at Co concentrations < 0.5 mM, struvite crystals nucleate and grow directly from solution, much in accordance with the classical notion of crystal formation. In contrast, at Co concentrations ≥ 1 mM, crystallisation was preceded by the transient formation of an amorphous nanoparticulate phosphate phase. Depending on the aqueous Co/P ratio, this amorphous precursor was found to transform into either (i) Co-bearing struvite (at Co/P < 0.3) or (ii) cobalt phosphate octahydrate (at Co/P > 0.3). These amorphous-to-crystalline transformations were accompanied by a marked colour change from blue to pink, indicating a change in Co2+ coordination in the formed solid from tetrahedral to octahedral. Our findings have implications for the recovery of nutrients and metals during struvite crystallisation and contribute to the ongoing general discussion about the mechanisms of crystal formation.
