An intermediate frequency (IF) band digitizing radiometer system in the 100-200 GHz frequency range has been developed for Tokamak diagnostics and control, and other fields of research which require a high flexibility in frequency resolution combined with a large bandwidth and the retrieval of the full wave information of the mm-wave signals under investigation. The system is based on directly digitizing the IF band after down conversion. The enabling technology consists of a fast multi-giga sample analog to digital converter that has recently become available. Field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) are implemented to accomplish versatile real-time data analysis. A prototype system has been developed and tested and its performance has been compared with conventional electron cyclotron emission (ECE) spectrometer systems. On the TEXTOR Tokamak a proof of principle shows that ECE, together with high power injected and scattered radiation, becomes amenable to measurement by this device. In particular, its capability to measure the phase of coherent signals in the spectrum offers important advantages in diagnostics and control. One case developed in detail employs the FPGA in real-time fast Fourier transform (FFT) and additional signal processing. The major benefit of such a FFT-based system is the real-time trade-off that can be made between frequency and time resolution. For ECE diagnostics this corresponds to a flexible spatial resolution in the plasma, with potential application in smart sensing of plasma instabilities such as the neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) and sawtooth instabilities. A fast Fourier transform (FFT) based wide range millimeter wave diagnostics for spectral characterization of scattered millimeter waves in plasmas has been successfully brought into operation. The scattered millimeter waves are heterodyne downconverted and directly digitized using a fast analog-digital converter and a compact peripheral component interconnect computer. Frequency spectra are obtained by FFT in the time domain of the intermediate frequency signal. The scattered millimeter waves are generated during high power electron cyclotron resonance heating experiments on the TEXTOR tokamak and demonstrate the performance of the diagnostics and, in particular, the usability of direct digitizing and Fourier transformation of millimeter wave signals. The diagnostics is able to acquire 4 GHz wide spectra of signals in the range of 136–140 GHz. The rate of spectra is tunable and has been tested between 200 000 spectra/s with a frequency resolution of 100 MHz and 120 spectra/s with a frequency resolution of 25 kHz. The respective dynamic ranges are 52 and 88 dB. Major benefits of the new diagnostics are a tunable time and frequency resolution due to postdetection, near-real time processing of the acquired data. This diagnostics has a wider application in astrophysics, earth observation, plasma physics, and molecular spectroscopy for the detection and analysis of millimeter wave radiation, providing high-resolution spectra at high temporal resolution and large dynamic range. Strong scattering of high-power millimeter waves at 140 GHz has been shown to take place in heating and current-drive experiments at TEXTOR when a tearing mode is present in the plasma. The scattering signal is at present supposed to be generated by the parametric decay instability. Here we describe the heterodyne detection system used to characterize the newly discovered signal measured at TEXTOR, and we present spectral shapes in which the signal can appear under different conditions. The radiation is collected by the receiver through a quasi-optical transmission line that is independent of the electron cyclotron resonance heating transmission line, and so the scattering geometry is variable. The signal is detected with 42 frequency channels ranging from 136 to 142 GHz. We demonstrate that the large signal does not originate from gyrotron spurious radiation. Carbon monoxide flame band emission (CO + O → CO2 + hν) in CO2 microwave plasma is quantified by obtaining absolute calibrated emission spectra at various locations in the plasma afterglow while simultaneously measuring gas temperatures using rotational Raman scattering. Comparison of our results to literature reveals a contribution of O2 Schumann–Runge UV emission at T > 1500 K. This UV component likely results from the collisional exchange of energy between CO2(1B) and O2. Limiting further analysis to T < 1500 K, we demonstrate the utility of CO flame band emission by analyzing afterglows at different plasma conditions. We show that the highest energy efficiency for CO production coincides with an operating condition where very little heat has been lost to the environment prior to ∼3 cm downstream, while simultaneously, T ends up below the level required to effectively freeze in CO. This observation demonstrates that, in CO2 plasma conversion, optimizing for energy efficiency does not require a sophisticated downstream cooling method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global Models are widely used to study reaction kinetics in low-temperature plasma discharges. The governing conservative equations are simplified into a system of ordinary differential equations in order to provide computationally feasible conditions to study complex chemistries with hundreds of species and thousands of reactions. This paper presents a detailed two-temperature global model for a H2O–He mixture. The model developed in this work uses a statistical thermodynamics approach to solve the heavy particles energy equation self-consistently together with the electron energy and particles balance equations in order to improve the description of reactive plasma environments. Three analytical test cases are presented to validate and demonstrate the capability of this newly developed functionality embedded in PLASIMO software's [1] global model module. The developed H2O–He models are compared with the reported results for a radio-frequency plasma [2] and then with experimental measured electron densities and gas temperature for a microwave induced plasma. In addition, conversion and energy efficiencies of hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide productions are compared with experimental values (only for hydrogen) for a pure H2O microwave induced plasma and with available literature results. This comparison underlines the challenges toward finding an optimal plasma configuration and conditions for production of hydrogen from water. The three analytical test cases for validation of the gas-temperature balance implementation in the PLASIMO global model and the detailed developed H2O–He model can be used as benchmarks for other global plasma models. A method is proposed to spatially resolve discharge parameters from experimental measurements of emission intensity and 1D numerical simulations including an O atom collisional-radiative model. The method can be used for different plasmas and conditions. Here, contracted microwave discharges for CO2 conversion are studied at intermediate to high pressures (100–300 mbar). Radial profiles of electron density (ne) are used as input in the model and corrected to successfully simulate the measured Gaussian profiles of emission intensity of the 777 nm transition (I777). As a result, radially-resolved parameters inaccessible in experiments, such as ne, power density (Pabs), electron temperature (Te), electric field and reaction rates, are numerically-obtained for several conditions. ne and Pabs approximately follow Gaussian profiles that are broader than that of I777. For pressures below 150 mbar, the difference in full width at half maximum is typically a factor 1.6. This consists in a phenomenon of optical contraction, which is due to concave profiles of O molar fraction and Te. The implications of the simulated profiles on the study of plasmas for CO2 conversion are discussed and it is shown that these profiles allow to explain high reactor performances at low pressures. This work addresses plasma chemistry in the core of a vortex-stabilized microwave discharge for CO2 conversion numerically, focusing on the pressure-dependent contraction dynamics of this plasma. A zero-dimensional model is presented for experimental conditions in a pressure range between 60 and 300 mbar and a temperature range between 3000 and 6500 K. Monte Carlo flux (MCF) simulations, which describe electron kinetics, are self-consistently coupled to the plasma chemistry model. The simulation results show that an increase in pressure is accompanied by a transition in neutral composition in the plasma core: from a significant amount of CO2 and O2 at low pressures to a O/CO/C mixture at high pressures, the composition being determined mostly by thermal equilibrium and by transport processes. The change of temperature and composition with pressure lead to higher ionisation coefficient and more atomic ion composition in the plasma core. These changes result in an increase in ionisation degree in the plasma core from 10−5 to 10−4. These factors are shown to be fundamental to drive contraction in the CO2 microwave discharge. Understanding and controlling contraction phenomena of plasmas in reactive flows is essential to optimize the discharge parameters for plasma processing applications such as fuel reforming and gas conversion. In this work, we describe the characteristic discharge modes in a CO2 microwave plasma and assess the impact of wave coupling and thermal reactivity on the contraction dynamics. The plasma shape and gas temperature are obtained from the emission profile and the Doppler broadening of the 777 nm oxygen triplet, respectively. Based on these observations, three distinct discharge modes are identified in the pressure range of 10 mbar to atmospheric pressure. We find that discharge contraction is suppressed by an absorption cutoff of the microwave field at the critical electron density, resulting in a homogeneous discharge mode below the critical transition pressure of 85 mbar. Further increase in the pressure leads to two contracted discharge modes, one emerging at a temperature of 3000 K–4000 K and one at a temperature of 6000 K–7000 K, which correspond to the thermal dissociation thresholds of CO2 and CO, respectively. The transition dynamics are explained by a thermo-chemical instability, which arises from the coupling of the thermal-ionization instability to heat transfer resulting from thermally driven endothermic CO2 dissociation reactions. The subatmospheric CO2 microwave plasma is known to contract to a narrow filament with rising pressure as result of a mode transition. This changing state of contraction is investigated in relation to its dielectric properties, in order to directly relate the discharge parameters to the discharge radius. The electron density and gas temperature are measured, respectively, by 168 GHz microwave interferometry and Doppler broadening of the 777 nm oxygen emission lines. The plasma is operated in steady state with 1400 W at 2.45 GHz, between 100 mbar and 400 mbar. Electron density values in the central region range from 1018 to 1020 m−3 between the discharge modes, while the gas temperature increases from 3000 K to 6500 K, in good agreement with previously reported values. Based on the dielectric properties of the discharge in relation to the plasma radius, it is found that the discharge column constitutes a radius of a single skin depth. Three dimensional electromagnetic modelling of a free-standing CO2 microwave plasma has been performed, by describing the plasma as a dielectric medium. The relative permittivity and conductivity of the medium are parametrised. The waveguide geometry from the experiment, including the tuner, is put into the model, knowing that this corresponds to maximum power transfer of the microwave generator to the plasma under plasma impedance matching conditions. Two CO2 plasma discharge regimes, differing mainly in pressure, input power and temperature, have been studied. The model's validity has been checked through study of materials of known conductivity. From measurements of the neutral gas temperature and the plasma electron density profile, the reduced electric field is determined. From the parametrisation of the dielectric properties, a range for the effective electron-neutral collision frequency for momentum transfer is estimated. The results for the reduced electric field and the range of the electron neutral collision frequency obtained, are consistent as verified by simulations using BOLSIG+. In addition, from this comparison it is possible to narrow down the range of the collision frequencies, and to estimate the electron temperature. The reduced electric field lies between 80 and 180 Td for the relatively low pressure, low input power, the so-called 'diffuse' regime. For the relatively high pressure, high input power ('contracted') regime it lies between 10 and 60 Td. The normalised collision frequency lies between 1.6 and 2.3 for the diffuse regime, while for the contracted regime it lies between 2 and 3. The electron temperature ranges from 2 to 3 eV for the diffuse regime, and from 0.5 to 1 eV for the contracted regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The input power of a CO2 microwave plasma is modulated at kHz rate in scans of duty cycle at constant average power to investigate gas heating dynamics and its relation to dissociation efficiency. Rotational temperature profiles obtained from rotational Raman scattering reveal peak temperatures of up to 3000 , while the edge temperature remains cold (500). During the plasma 'OFF'-period, the gas cools down convectively, but remains overall too hot to allow for strong overpopulation of vibrational modes (2200 in the core). Fast optical imaging monitors plasma volume variations and shows that power density scales with peak power. As dissociation scales with observed peak rotational temperature, it is concluded that thermal processes dominate. A simple 0D model is constructed which explains how higher power density favors dissociation over radial energy transport. Thermal decomposition is reviewed in relation to quenching oxygen radicals with vibrationally excited CO2, to reflect on earlier reported record efficiencies of 90%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anomalous scattering of high power millimetre waves from gyrotrons at 140 and 110 GHz is investigated for plasma with rotating islands at TEXTOR. The magnetic field and plasma density influence the spectral content of the scattered waves and their power levels significantly. Anomalous strong scattering occurs in two density regimes, one at low densities and one at high densities, that also depend on the magnetic field. The two regimes are separated by a quiescent regime without anomalous scattering. Investigations suggest that scattering in the high-density regime is generated at the low-field side intersection of the gyrotron beam and the island position. The transition from the quiescent regime to the high-density regime occurs when the gyrotron frequency is twice the upper hybrid frequency at this position. There is some evidence that the scattering in the low-density regime is generated near the plasma centre. Under this assumption all the observed scattering is generated when the gyrotron frequency is near or below twice the upper hybrid frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An electron cyclotron emission (ECE) receiver inside the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) transmission line has been brought into operation. The ECE is extracted by placing a quartz plate acting as a Fabry–Perot interferometer under an angle inside the electron cyclotron wave (ECW) beam. ECE measurements are obtained during high power ECRH operation. This demonstrates the successful operation of the diagnostic and, in particular, a sufficient suppression of the gyrotron component preventing it from interfering with ECE measurements. When integrated into a feedback system for the control of plasma instabilities this line-of-sight ECE diagnostic removes the need to localize the instabilities in absolute coordinates. Abstract: Torus window prototypes for electron cyclotron (EC) heating and current drive (H&CD) systems are developed for different launcher concepts in accordance with the specific transmission requirements. For ITER, single-disk windows are designed for 2MW power transmission at fixed frequency (170GHz) in two variants. For the RS launcher, the remote steering unit is placed close to the torus window in the launcher back-end which calls for a large window aperture (95mm) to avoid beam vignetting at the extreme steering angles of ±12°. For the FS launcher with the steering mechanism placed in the front shield of the launcher, the aperture and the disk thickness are reduced as the torus window is integrated into a cylindrical waveguide configuration with an inner diameter of 63.5mm. The reduced absorbed power and cooling paths allow to consider indirect cooling as an alternative to edge cooling which eliminates the risk of tritium contact to the cooling water in case of crack formation in the diamond disk. For the multifrequency torus window at ASDEX Upgrade (aperture: 80mm), a double-disk configuration is realised with the disk separation of 5mm, fine tuneable over ±1mm. Prototypes of the high power windows were manufactured. First results of the current thermo-hydraulic and of the mm-wave performance tests support the feasibility of the concepts. For a free-electron oscillator, problems of mode dynamics are studied for a case when the feedback has a wide, but finite band (the feedback coefficient depends on the frequency). It is shown that even a broadband frequency-dispersive feedback can significantly affect both the electron-current threshold of stability of the single-mode operation and the process of frequency tuning. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
