Abstract Objective Method Results Conclusions In 2020, Army National Guard members demonstrated greater risk of suicide than their military and civilian counterparts. Though literature on deployment-related experiences and suicidal ideation (SI) is mixed, investigations of specific deployment-related experiences (e.g., injuries) may further elucidate the relationship between deployment and suicide risk. Deployment-related injuries, including pain severity and functional impairment, have been linked to increased risk of SI, and correlates like perceived burdensomeness (PB) and hopelessness. The current study sought to examine the cross-sectional relationship between deployment-related injuries, including pain severity and functional impairment, and severity of SI through PB and hopelessness.Immediately post-deployment, Army National Guard members (N = 2,261) completed validated self-report measures on past-week SI, PB, hopelessness, and single items regarding injury sustained during deployment and associated functional impairment and pain severity.Indirect effect analyses revealed that experience of deployment-related injury was related to SI through PB and hopelessness (R2 = .1993), functional impairment was related to SI through PB, and pain severity was related to SI through PB. Contrary to hypotheses, hopelessness was not associated with SI when PB was simultaneously considered.Army National Guard members who develop a sense of PB related to their injury and functional impairment of that injury may be at increased risk for suicidal ideation. Military suicide-prevention efforts may be potentiated through targeting distorted cognitions such as PB and hopelessness, especially in service members who have been injured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Suicide Cognitions Scale (SCS) measures suicide-related beliefs proposed by the Fluid Vulnerability Theory. A recent investigation of a revised version of the SCS (i.e., SCS-R) which omits items explicitly referencing suicide has indicated that the measure is highly influenced by a general factor and may be useful for distinguishing severity levels of suicidal thoughts and behaviors; however, limited concurrent validity studies with a range of suicide-related experiences have been conducted. As such, this study replicated and extended previous psychometric research on the SCS-R in an online survey study with a community sample of N = 10,625 U.S. adults. Results confirmed the unidimensional structure of the SCS-R. Logistic regression analyses indicated that the total score of the SCS-R is useful in distinguishing varying levels of suicidal thoughts and behaviors such as past-month planning for suicide without attempt versus past-month suicide attempt. Previous research has linked unsafe firearm storage practices and other ownership-related characteristics to key factors that facilitate the transition from suicidal thoughts to suicidal behaviors (i.e., acquired capability for suicide). This research has not investigated the extent to which firearm owners store firearms in their vehicles, a factor that increases ready access to the most lethal means of suicide. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of occasional and permanent vehicle firearm storage as well as demographic and psychological correlates of this practice in a sample of N = 408 adult male firearm owners oversampled for historical thoughts of suicide. Participants completed an online survey for monetary compensation. Over 40% of participants indicated at least occasionally storing firearms in their vehicles with over 15% indicating storage of firearms unlocked and loaded. Elevated scores on measures of negative affect, worry, intolerance of uncertainty, and historical suicidal thoughts and behaviors were seen in those who endorsed vehicle firearm storage compared to those who did not. Individual and public health firearm safety strategies would benefit from an explicit focus on the transition of firearms to and from one's vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine the cortisol response of spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) after exposure to air immersion and netting (acute stress) under a range of increasing densities (chronic stressor). In addition, the presence of a cumulative negative impact from chronic stress was assessed by the application of an additional acute stressor following rearing at various densities, and proxies of behavior were evaluated (feeding and aggression data). The stress response to air immersion and netting led to increasing plasma cortisol values at 0.5, 13, and 37 h post-stress, with the highest value achieved after 13 h. At 168 h, cortisol concentrations returned to similar pre-stress value. Changes in cortisol concentrations were relatively low after acute stress (five to six fold increases) and recovery time long lasting (>37 h). Prolonged rearing at 20, 30, and 40 kg m−2showed a non-significant trend of increasing cortisol values with increasing density, and the cortisol response after the application of an additional acute stressor was significantly altered, i.e., higher cortisol levels were measured in unstressed (chronic stress only) compared to stressed fish (chronic stress + acute stress). Our results suggest that (1) spotted wolffish is a low responder that additionally displays a long-lasting cortisol elevation following an acute stressor; (2) fixed densities did not lead to significant differences of plasma cortisol concentration or aggression levels, although involved marked changes in daily feed intake and food conversion efficiency were observed; and (3) cortisol levels reached acute stress values after prolonged chronic stress. Although this species displays indications of being relatively resistant to handling disturbances during aquaculture practices, it is nevertheless responsive to chronic stress factors that could alter the physiological response to subsequent acute stressor. The goal of this study was to determine the optimal stocking density for rearing juvenile spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen), at two different sizes and assess the welfare status in relation to density. No major growth impairment was observed, although smaller fish (50–100 g) were significantly affected by density during the 120 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 119.6 ± 11.6, 118.0 ± 5.8 and 88.7 ± 0.6 g for initial rearing densities of 10, 20 and 40 kg m−2 respectively. No effect of rearing density was seen for larger fish (100–160 g) during the 90 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 160.2 ± 5.9, 159.7 ± 3.7 and 163.7 ± 11.5 g at fixed rearing densities of 20, 30 and 40 kg m−2 respectively. Our results suggest that the optimal rearing density of juvenile spotted wolffish is below 40 kg m−2 for smaller size fish (∼50–100 g) and probably ≥40 kg m−2 for the larger fish (100–160 g). Furthermore, it appears that the range of rearing density used did not have a significant effect on a selection of stress indicators (Na+ and K+ concentration, haematocrit, hepatosomatic index, total amount of plasma proteins and liver and muscle water content) and immunity response (plasma lysozyme activity) of juvenile spotted wolffish, making it a very tolerant species to crowding. The Suicide Status Form-IV (SSF-IV) is the measure used in the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS). The SSF-IV Core Assessment measures various domains of suicide risk. Previous studies established a two-factor solution in small, homogeneous samples; no investigations have assessed measurement invariance. The current investigation sought to replicate previous factor analyses and used measurement invariance to identify differences in the Core Assessment by race and gender. Adults (N = 731) were referred for a CAMS consultation after exhibiting risk for suicide. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated good fit for both one- and two-factor solutions while the two-factor solution is potentially redundant. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance held across race and gender. Ordinal logistic regression models indicated that neither race nor gender significantly moderated the relationship between the Core Assessment total score and clinical outcomes. Several protective factors for mitigating suicidal ideation (SI) such as positive affect, reasons for living, purpose in life, meaning in life, gratitude, grit, optimism, social support, and hope have been identified and received empirical support. However, few studies have examined the interrelationships of these protective factors and the identification of protective factors most closely linked to lower levels of SI may be useful for both theory-building initiatives and improvement of suicide-specific interventions. Network analysis offers an approach for testing the relation among these constructs, SI, and suicide risk factors. A sample N = 557 undergraduate students oversampled for lifetime SI completed a cross-sectional, online survey. The data was used to estimate an undirected, cross-sectional network of the aforementioned protective factors. The resulting inferred network implicates strong negative influence of suicide cognitions, but not recent SI, and the strong positive influence of presence of meaning in life, trait hope, and low negative affect. Implications for dimensionality of SI versus suicide cognitions, targeting presence of meaning in life, trait hope, and negative affect in treatment, and cross-cultural variations in reasons for living are discussed. The study is limited by the cross-sectional and convenience sampling methodology. Background: Blood typing for the A and B antigens is essential and crossmatching testing is generally recommended before transfusing blood to cats. Objective: To evaluate 2 crossmatch (XM) tests. Animals: Forty‐nine healthy domestic shorthair cats that had not received a blood transfusion. Methods: Prospective study. Blood samples were typed for AB using immunochromatographic and flow cytometric techniques. A gel column (GC) and a feline antiglobulin‐enhanced gel column (AGC) XM tests were used for crossmatching. Results: The population included 34 type A, 13 B, and 2 AB cats, with concordant results (r = 1, P < .005) by flow cytometry and immunochromatographic strip kit. The plasma from type A cats had either no or weak anti‐B alloantibodies. The plasma of 12 of 13 type B cats contained strong anti‐A alloantibodies. For crossmatching, plasma to RBC pairings were prepared using the GC (n = 446) and AGC (n = 630) tests. Both methods showed compatibilities in 329 and incompatibilities in 102 pairings including all A‐B mismatches. Additionally 15 pairings showed agglutination by the AGC but not GC method. Fourteen incompatibilities outside the expected A‐B mismatches were only revealed by AGC. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: AB typing using immunochromatographic strip is as accurate as laboratory flow cytometry. The 2 XM methods had good agreement with additional incompatibilities being recognized by the AGC XM beyond A‐B incompatibilities. In clinic, feline AB typing and sensitive XM test kits are available and recommended before each transfusion, although the clinical implications of incompatible XM test results and clinical benefits of such crossmatching have not been documented. CpG-reduced, CMV-based plasmid DNA constructs encoding human α-galactosidase A and factor IX were injected into C57Bl/6, BALB/c, and CD1 mice using hydrodynamics-based delivery of plasmid DNA (pDNA), and gene expression was monitored for 6 months. Linearized and supercoiled pDNAs were compared for their abilities to support long-term expression and to generate immune responses to the transgene product. In all mouse strains supercoiled CpG-reduced pDNA encoding α-galactosidase A and factor IX generated higher and more sustained levels of circulating gene product than their supercoiled CpG-replete analogs. Linearizing supercoiled CpG-reduced pDNA did not significantly increase levels of circulating gene product beyond levels supercoiled CpG-reduced pDNA could achieve. Linearizing supercoiled CpG-replete pDNA vectors significantly increased expression compared to their supercoiled CpG-replete analogs, but the increase was short-lived or subtherapeutic. Regardless of vector, liver depot expression did not elicit significant antibody responses to human α-galactosidase A or factor IX. Taken together, these data suggest that a clinically acceptable hydrodynamics-based approach targeting the liver combined with CpG-reduced pDNA vectors may represent a viable option for individuals with hemophilia, a lysosomal storage disease, or other disease in which prolonged depot expression of a therapeutic protein from the liver is desirable.
