Background: Although disability is not ethnicity or race specific, it is known that cultural differences do occur in how disability is perceived (Daudji et al., 2010). Parental involvement influences how school personnel provide resources for students with a disability (An & Hodge, 2013; Barge & Loges, 2003). Aims: This study aims to describe perceptions of disability among Asian immigrant parents of children with disabilities in a western U.S. state that is considered to be both multicultural and urban, and to explore how these perceptions influence how services that may be available to their children are utilized. Methods: A descriptive mixed-method research design was employed. Semi-structured interviews and a Likertscale survey given to seventeen parents who immigrated to the USA from Asia, and whose children have disabilities and receiving direct services as part of their Individualized Education Program. Results: Themes were identified that directly relate to parents' cultural beliefs, knowledge of curriculum and parental rights. Percentages were high with regard to feelings of available and accessible services for their children with disabilities, and low percentages with regard to their comfort level of utilizing specific services which can be seen as barriers. Discussion and Conclusions: This research showed the importance of Asian immigrant parents' perceptions and how perceived barriers can actually become opportunities with the knowledge, value and belief in and of expert professionals within such a community. Further research should be conducted in determining goals to overcome perceived barriers within this culture in order for their children to have a better quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

College education is the last opportunity to educate a large segment of young adults to be physically active and develop a healthy lifestyle. This study examined minority community college student risks for cardiovascular disease, physical activity (PA) patterns, and effects of physical education and general health courses on promoting PA. Minority students (N = 291) at a community college in a large metropolitan area participated in the project. Body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure were used to estimate risks for potential heart problems while PA patterns were assessed using a pre-validated questionnaire. The data from the study suggested that about two thirds of the participants we're at a high risk level for heart problems. More than two thirds of the participants did not perform adequate amounts of PA. Those who were taking physical education and general health courses reported significantly greater amounts of PA than those who were not. This group of minority community students urgently needs interventions to improve their overall health and PA levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors reviewed studies on college students' physical activity (PA) behaviors and found that previous research on this topic focused on describing college students' PA patterns and their determinants. Researchers reported that about 40% to 50% of college students are physically inactive. More important, health and PA professionals in higher education have not been able to effectively increase students' PA behaviors. Interventions to promote students' PA are still at an early stage and have only produced moderate effects. The authors found primary problems with the current research on this topic to be 3-fold: (1) college students' PA has been seriously neglected as a research topic, (2) there is a lack of multiple-level approaches (ie, personal, psychosocial, and environmental levels) for examining PA behaviors in the college student population, and (3) measures of PA are subjective and inconsistent, which makes comparisons of PA patterns among different samples very difficult or impossible.
