This paper assesses the importance of incorporating care dimensions into activity-travel segmentation to understand daily life mobility strategies. The data came from six neighbourhoods in Concepción, Chile, and included detailed information on activity-travel time use and interaction and classification schemes to identify care purposes. The study uses self-organizing maps to build incremental behavioural segments from weekly mobility and time use variables, adding care activities to assess their role in this segmentation. The results identify groups with a higher burden on care than others, emphasizing the role of transport mode and time use patterns. The result remarks caregiving activities hidden within other categories, identifying groups of caregivers, including domestic workers and women who work and have intense accompanying activities with children. The results highlight the differences between mobility patterns between different segments to make more invisible care and other related activities disproportionately performed by groups of women. Aims: To systematically describe the factors influencing the perception of feeling safe among patients receiving pre‐hospital emergency care. Background: Patient safety is a top priority worldwide. Little is known about how patients perceive safety during emergency health care and what the related factors are. Design: A mixed‐methods systematic review. Methods: Six databases were searched to December 2021. Inclusion criteria were as follows: studies with patients of any age, framed in pre‐hospital emergency care settings, referring to patient safety, addressing the perception of safety, and with a quantitative or qualitative research design. Exclusion criteria were as follows: conference records, abstracts, supplements, letters, editorials and reviews. The quality of the evidence was assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklists. A convergent integrated approach was followed according to the JBI methodology. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022306337). PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed in reporting this review. Results: Among the 5223 records identified, the whole texts of 35 articles were reviewed. Ten studies were relevant to the research question. Seven followed a qualitative methodology, with interviews or focus group. Three involved a quantitative methodology, with questionnaires or validated measures. The 74 findings were organised into 11 categories and then grouped into four dimensions: 'receiving a satisfying response from healthcare professionals when I need it', 'EMS personnel's professional competence', 'the variable and unfamiliar settings of pre‐hospital emergencies', and 'patients' personal characteristics'. Conclusions: The perception of safety is influenced by many factors, which can be grouped into four independent dimensions. Quantitative and qualitative studies can provide us with complementary findings. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Awareness of these factors enables us to act upon them. When patients feel safe their health outcomes improve, their anxiety decreases and they collaborate more actively. This paper presents an analysis of people's time use patterns, incorporating the mediating role of ICT and personal networks on their daily activity-travel patterns, explicitly addressing the issue of activity fragmentation for social-based episodes. Implementing a seven-day time use survey, which includes temporal, spatial, and social characteristics for each activity, and using a theoretical framework based on current theory, a structural equation model was estimated to study these relationships. The results suggest a positive effect of ICT episodes on social activity interaction, activity fragmentation, and out-of-home social allocated time. We also found that ICTs encourage social trip generation only indirectly. Finally, those who had a social network physically close showed higher levels of fragmentation in their social episodes and less out-of-home social activity time. Aims and objectives: To determine the feelings of safety among patients taken to hospital after requesting urgent care, based on their experiences and those of their carers and prehospital emergency care professionals. Background: Little research has been performed into the perception of safety in prehospital emergency care settings worldwide, from either the perspective of the patients or from that of healthcare professionals. Design: Exploratory qualitative study using focus groups in Spain. Methods: The participants were patients that requested care through the emergency telephone service, their carers and the professionals of the emergency care teams. The structured sampling design was based on an intentional, nonprobability selection following pragmatic criteria. Seven groups of patients/carers and two groups of professionals were formed (65 participants). The recordings were fully transcribed before their validation and codes were assigned to ensure anonymity. The ATLAS.ti software was used for the analysis. The authors took into account the COREQ checklist for qualitative studies. Findings: Neither group provided a clear definition of the meaning of feeling safe. It appeared easier to give examples that had a positive or negative influence on their perception of feeling safe. During the analysis of the discourse, six categories were detected after grouping the related codes. Conclusions: For most of the patients' feeling of being safe or very safe arose from the perception of calmness, trust and protection. Defining the perception of safety was not easy. The factors with the greatest effect on feeling safe were related to Information and communication, Person‐centred care and Professional competency, without losing sight of other factors such as Accessibility and response times of the emergency teams, Equipment and Healthcare setting. Combining traditional transport research tools with qualitative research methods, particularly ethnography, can contribute to our understanding of the complexity of mobility strategies, particularly their gendered differences. Ethnographic approaches can both explain and disentangle some of the results that emerge from travel and time use surveys, hence providing a more complete picture of how and why these strategies take place, and the barriers people face when moving in the city. Using research-case studies based on in the city of Concepcion, Chile, the paper describes the application of these methods, presenting results which are particularly gender sensitive, as they shed light on the difficulty of understanding mobility strategies as individually decided and conceived, and help to explain how mobility strategies are interdependent and how determinant issues of care are in terms of mobility decision making. With the interest on understanding and modeling the role of transport on social networks, the objective of this research is to study social network dynamics by explicitly collecting and modeling data from people’s personal networks in two points of time. Using data collected in a two-year panel in Concepción, Chile, a multilevel model highlights the role of respondents’ characteristics and social contact attributes in personal network dynamics. At the respondents’ level, the results highlight the relevance of important life events and material conditions, such as income and car ownership. At the level of the social contacts, the results highlight how tie maintenance is influenced by aspects such as kinship, emotional closeness, monetary support, sex and income similarity, neighboring, and high frequency of face-to-face and telephone interactions. Despite some challenges and limitations, this research remarks the feasibility of collecting personal network dynamics, and its relevance to understand and inform social activity-travel models. Obtaining the transient probability distribution vector of a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) using an implicit ordinary differential equation (ODE) solver tends to be advantageous in terms of run-time computational cost when the product of the maximum output rate of the CTMC and the largest time of interest is large. In this paper, we show that when applied to the transient analysis of CTMCs, many implicit ODE solvers are such that the linear systems involved in their steps can be solved by using iterative methods with strict control of the 1-norm of the error. This allows the development of implementations of those ODE solvers for the transient analysis of CTMCs that can be more efficient and more accurate than more standard implementations. Accessibility is crucial to establishing and maintaining a nutritious and healthy diet. Although much of the literature on access to healthy food has focused on study areas in the Global North, the topic is of growing relevance to other regions across the globe. In Chile, where the prevalence of chronic diseases related to obesity and diet has increased, and over 50 percent of Chileans are considered overweight or obese, improving accessibility to healthy food has been an essential strategy for improving health outcomes, including the food environment. In this article, we analyze walking accessibility from homes and workplaces to open street markets and supermarkets that sell fresh fruits and vegetables and consider the role of price in the Concepción metropolitan area, the second most populated city in Chile. Results suggest that supermarkets and open street markets are distributed in a complementary way. Open street markets have a crucial role in facilitating access to more affordable products for peripheral and low-income areas. The recent interest in the role of transport in social interactions has been partly motivated by the hope of achieving a better understanding of the role that transport plays in network capital, or the resources that people can gather from their social networks. Despite the relevancy of this question for policy, little empirical work has been done to elucidate this relationship. This paper illustrates a method of data collection and analysis, using the social networks approach to assess the role of transport in social support, both emotional and material. The personal networks of two neighbourhoods in Concepcion, Chile, with different income levels, are compared, focusing on the role of car ownership in network capital, and the relevance of the time and space characteristics of social contacts. The results suggest that having a car at home does not lead to homogeneous access to network capital, which depends heavily on the kind of social resource studied and the income context (neighbourhood) in which the individuals are embedded. The findings also underscore the need to treat social capital as a truly multidimensional concept and the usefulness of the personal networks approach for assessing these complex relationships. Abstract: This paper presents a social activity-travel generation model, which explicitly incorporates the individual’s social dimension through the concept of personal networks, modeling the multilevel structure of social relations defined by these networks. The objective of the analysis is to study the relevance of the social dimension as a source of explanation of social activity-travel generation behavior between an individual and each relevant person of their social life. The paper uses a disaggregated perspective of personal networks, explicitly incorporating the characteristics of each network member as well as the characteristics of the overall social structure. Using an ordinal multilevel specification that accounts for the social network in which individuals are embedded, four dimensions are studied: personal characteristics, “with whom” activities are performed, social network composition and structure, and ICT (information and communication technology) interaction. The results show that a proper and complete understanding of social activity generation requires going beyond the individualistic paradigm, explicitly incorporating the role of the social dimension in the study of this decision-making process. This paper explores the relationship between travel behaviour, ICT use and social networks. Specifically, we outline a theory of social action that can inform how ICTs relates to social activity travel and explore the efficacy of this theory in an empirical setting. We begin by outlining two factors that influence the propensity to travel: an individual's will to initiate events with members of one's social network, referred to as agency, and the social accessibility of network members themselves. Social accessibility defines a series of practical constraints for social-activity travel and agency defines the extent to which an individual will actively work within these constraints to maintain their social network. The theoretical section first unpacks these concepts while embedding them in the research literature, finishing with an operationalisation of agency and social accessibility. Using this theory, the empirical section investigates the relationship between agency, social accessibility, and factors associated with both the respondents and their personal networks. More specifically, we examine how agency levels of interaction are related to differences in demographics, global measures of network structure and composition, and measures of media use, particularly of Internet and telephone. We conclude that individuals who are proximate or more active are more likely to maintain reciprocal relationships, and that more distant or infrequent ties require greater maintenance on the individual's part. We believe that studies of activity-travel and ICTs will benefit from a theoretical lens that articulates some of the transformative effects of ICTs on travel vis-à-vis its effects on social life. Social accessibility and agency can help focus that lens thereby enabling researchers to make potentially more elaborate and realistic models that move beyond the spatial and temporal dimensions into social dimensions. This paper presents a data collection effort designed to incorporate the social dimension in social activity-travel behavior by explicitly studying the link between individuals' social activities and their social networks. The main hypothesis of the data collection effort is that individuals' travel behavior is conditional upon their social networks; that is, a key cause of travel behavior is the social dimension represented by social networks. With this hypothesis in mind, and using survey and interview instruments, the respondents' social networks are collected using an egocentric approach that is constituted by the interplay between their individual social structures and their social activity behavior. More explicitly, individuals' networks are a context within which to elicit social activity-travel generation, spatial distribution, and information communication and technology use. The resultant dataset links aspects, in novel ways, that have been rarely studied together, and provides a sound base of theory and method to study and potentially give new insights about social activity-travel behavior. We describe an interview-based data-collection procedure for social network analysis designed to aid gathering information about the people known by a respondent and reduce problems with data integrity and respondent burden. This procedure, a participant-aided network diagram (sociogram), is an extension of traditional name generators. Although such a diagram can be produced through computer-assisted programs for interviewing (CAPIs) and low technology (i.e., paper), we demonstrate both practical and methodological reasons for keeping high technology in the lab and low technology in the field. We provide some general heuristics that can reduce the time needed to complete a name generator. We present findings from our Connected Lives field study to illustrate this procedure and compare to an alternative method for gathering network data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The topic of this research was to determine whether out-of-hospital emergency teams could make use of previously prepared saline solutions (SS). The objective was to discover the physical, chemical and sterility characteristics of previously prepared saline infusions stored in ambulances and ascertain how long they remained in optimum condition. Method: Randomised clinical trial, triple blind, where study units consisted of saline solutions prepared with an infusion system and a three-way valve. The duration of the study was 12 months. Six intervention groups were designed on the basis of time of exposure and location. Samples consisted of 672 units. Twelve microbiological cultures were made and the pH, density, viscosity and CINa concentration were determined. We compared hypotheses with four models of linear regression for the variables and a model of logistic regression for the variables. A value of P<0.05 was considered significant. Results: We obtained results from 669 saline solutions (98.82%). Neither multivariant analysis nor ANOVA tests showed any significant association for a power greater than 99% with regard to the physical–chemical characteristics. The model of logistic regression also did not find any significant association for sterility. Colonisation was present in 1.7% of the 8,028 cultures made and more than 5 CFU per millilitre was found in only two cases. Conclusion: There is no evidence to suggest that recently prepared saline infusion solutions are any different from a physical–chemical and sterility point of view than those exposed for 24, 48, or 72 h. The popular hierarchical or nested logit model that has been the recent source of heated discussions in the literature is reviewed and critically examined. The fundamental underpinnings of the model are first presented in a concise and easy-to-understand fashion and then used to assess each controversy in turn. Monte Carlo simulation is also used to examine some problems that are not possible to address by just resorting to the theory. The main conclusion is that all the model hypotheses are both essential and unambiguous and should not be ignored for a correct use of the model in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two behavioural types in sociohydrology of floods have been described in more detail than others: the levee effect and the learning effect. However, additional types of behaviour operate and need further research. Taking the case of frequent flash floods occurring in an ephemeral stream, a tributary of the Vilama River, located in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, at the interphase between the Atacama desert and the Andean Altiplano, we explore the existence of further behavioural types in the sociohydrology of floods at four neighbourhoods along the tributary. Fieldwork to reconstruct a recent flood event, hydrological analysis and semistructured interviews with key informants to characterize people's responses to floods were conducted. Results show evidence that the so-called status quo effect is present at the riparian community scale, i.e. when communities do not learn and adapt to prevent damage even when exposed to frequent floods. Design: NEMS-S-CHILE was the NEMS-S tool adapted to the Chilean food patterns; foods were grouped according to level of processing in (a) unprocessed or minimally processed foods, (b) processed culinary ingredients, (c) processed foods, and (d) ultra-processed foods, and scored according to NEMS-S-CHILE tool. Reliability inter evaluators was measured. Setting: City of Concepción, Bio-Bio region, Chile. Participants: Seventeen of a total of 25 supermarkets, and 9 out of 10 street markets according to the municipal registry and the street market trade unions, representing 74.3% of both types of food premises in Concepción. Results: Reliability inter evaluators was measured by the following aspects: product availability, price, quality, and variety, through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), percent agreement, and Cohen's kappa analysis. Reliability was high for availability, where the kappa index and ICC were acceptable, ranging from moderate to high (0.42 to 1.00 for the kappa coefficient and 0.65 to 1.00 for ICC), as well as for prices (ICC: 0.65-1.00), variety (kappa: 0.76-1.00) and quality (percent agreement: 68.2- 100%). Conclusions: The adapted instrument, NEMS-S-CHILE, has a high reliability inter evaluators and can be useful to measure the availability of foods by the level of processing according to the prevalent food system in developing countries. This paper investigates the spatial distribution of social activity locations. The research makes use of a social interaction potential (SIP) metric to estimate the potential for an individual to participate in a face-to-face social activity at any particular location in the city. The metric is shown to constitute a contact probability field that is sensitive to timegeographic constraints such as home locations, workplaces, and travel times. Empirical case studies drawn from samples in Ghent, Belgium and Concepción, Chile are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the SIP metric in assigning high potential scores to observed social activity episodes. Moreover, a regression model is used to estimate the marginal benefit of using successive levels of constraint detail. The results illustrate both positive and negative aspects of the SIP metric. The metric behaves very well in general; 75% of the time an observed activity location received a score in the 25th percentile. However, lower valued scores were more common in cases when the time-geographic constraints were not very strong (ie, when the commute duration was short), or when activities took place in the homes of the respondents. In the end, the results are a step towards validating the regional scale SIP metric and indicate that it may be useful in microsimulation models of daily travel and activity participation. The relations between preparedness and psycho-social attributes of people and communities exposed to river floods in a nearly pristine socio-hydrological system were investigated, applying a hydrological-hydraulic analysis of flood risk in combination with results from a survey, social cartography, semi-structured non-participant observation, and semi-structured interviews. Results show that preparedness in nearly pristine systems is noticeably different to that reported for altered systems. People adopt innovative and simple but efficient measures against floods, conditioned by (1) damage suffered during past floods, (2) perceived exposure to floods, and (3) the number of dependent people in the household. The studied system proved to be well adapted to floods but not resilient. Studying attributes that explain preparedness as part of flood risk management plans would contribute towards uncertainty reduction in risk calculations and increase the safety of goods and people from floods. Planning for more sustainable mobility is an important goal for public authorities worldwide. Setting better conditions for pedestrians and cyclists has been related to many social benefits, such as less pollution and congestion. Local authorities, aware of the relationship between transport and land-use, are adopting planning tools to analyze growth in cities and their impacts using multiple indicators. This paper develops an econometric trip length model that correlates socioeconomic characteristics and built environment conditions with walking travel distances in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. A log-linear regression model was estimated using information for 2015 of Bogotá's household travel survey, along with data of employment and population by block obtained from official sources. The built environment component of the model serves to evaluate the effect of land-use patterns. A proof of concept was developed using land-use information extracted from a Cellular Automata Land-Use model calibrated for the city. From its results, some factors of the built environment were estimated and two scenarios were tested in this study. One depicts the average walking distance for households surveyed in 2015, and the other takes a simulation of land-use policy in developing a new urban area as an input. The results indicate that people living in areas were the land-use mix and job/population ratio are low, tend to have longer walking distances, suggesting the need to implement special policies that reallocate some activities and encourage higher land-use mix in the urban periphery where low-income households tend to be located. An understanding of activity choices and duration is a key requirement for better policy making, in transport and beyond. Previous studies have failed to make the important link with individuals’ social context. In this paper, the Multiple Discrete-Continuous Nested Extreme Value (MDCNEV) model is applied to the choice of activity type and duration over the course of two days, using data from the Chilean city of Concepción. In common with other studies, heterogeneity across decision makers is accommodated in the model by analysing the impact of different socio-demographic, mobility and residential location variables on both the activity choice and the time allocation decision. In addition, different social network and social capital measures are found to be significantly correlated with the choice and duration of different activities, and we show how these relationships seem to differ from the effects of socio-demographic variables. The purpose of this paper is to model the travel behaviour of socially disadvantaged population segments in the United Kingdom (UK) using the data from the UK National Travel Survey 2002–2010. This was achieved by introducing additional socioeconomic variables into a standard national-level trip end model (TEM) and using purpose-based analysis of the travel behaviours of certain key socially disadvantaged groups. Specifically the paper aims to explore how far the economic and social disadvantages of these individuals can be used to explain the inequalities in their travel behaviours. The models demonstrated important differences in travel behaviours according to household income, presence of children in the household, possession of a driver’s licence and belonging to a vulnerable population group, such as being disabled, non-white or having single parent household status. In the case of household income, there was a non-linear relationship with trip frequency and a linear one with distance travelled. The recent economic austerity measures that have been introduced in the UK and many other European countries have led to major cutbacks in public subsidies for socially necessary transport services, making results such as these increasingly important for transport policy decision-making. The results indicate that the inclusion of additional socioeconomic variables is useful for identifying significant differences in the trip patterns and distances travelled by low-income. This paper provides a critical review of the progress in understanding the linkages between transport disadvantage and social exclusion. It follows earlier work in proposing social capital as a concept that mediates those linkages but argues that transport researchers must not confine themselves to conceptualisations of social capital as predominantly benign and capable of reducing transport disadvantage and social exclusion. A range of hypothetical pathways is discussed, highlighting the Janus-faced character of social capital as a medium for both the effectuation of progressive social change and the perpetuation and creation of social inequalities. An analysis is provided of the extent to which the recent transport-related literature supports or rejects the hypothesised pathways, and key avenues for future research are identified. Abstract: Acknowledging the relevance of social networks on (social) travel behaviour, the objective of this paper is to comparatively study the distance patterns between the home locations of social contacts. Analyses are based on five recent collections of personal network data from four countries: Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Chile. Multilevel models, which explicitly account for the hierarchical structure of the data sets, are used to study the role of explanatory variables to understand the distance patterns of social contacts. Modelling results suggest that alters’ characteristics (such as type of relationship, emotional closeness, and duration of the relationship) as well as personal network composition (alters with a certain relationship to the ego) constitute stronger predictors than an ego’s socio-demographic information across these countries. In addition, comparative analyses suggest differences between countries on relevant key variables such as an ego’s income and the ego–alter tie strength. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Discrete choice models has been for decades the most used technique to model travel mode choice, being the multinomial logit (MNL) the most popular model among them. Several versions of the MNL model have been proposed, such as the mixed multinomial logit (MMNL) model which takes into account unobserved taste heterogeneity. On the other hand, machine learning (ML) methods have begun to gain ground in the transportation field, showing a high predictive power that surpasses logit models. Nowadays, most studies comparing machine learning methods and logit models mainly focus on predictive accuracy, while others – to a lesser extent – focus on post-hoc explanation analysis. In this paper, we compare the predictive performance of five machine learning classifiers and the MNL and MMNL models. Also, we shed light on explanation capability by computing the effect of different variables not only on the overall prediction but also on the prediction of different choice alternatives using an agnostic-model method. The different methods are tested based on synthetic datasets with and without taste heterogeneity between decision-maker, showing a reduction of the accuracy gap between discrete choice models and ML methods when taste heterogeneity is present. We also present an empirical application using four mode choice datasets. Our results show that Neural Networks generally perform better than other models in terms of accuracy and interpretation. Results highlight the importance of analyzing the equivalence between the models in order to complement the explanations obtained through the two approaches. Simple Summary: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are an uncommon and heterogeneous group of tumors, with scarce options for treatment in advanced cases. There is no consensus regarding which is the best treatment sequence for these patients. Although trabectedin is an approved drug for STS treatment, after progression to anthracyclines, the clinical profile of the patients that most benefit from this drug it is not defined. We have retrospectively analyzed a sample of 357 nonselected sarcoma patients from real-world experience, treated homogeneously with trabectedin, confirming and validating results from previous clinical trials and other retrospective studies. After analyzing clinical prognostic factors, we selected those which predicted a better growth modulation index (GMI > 1.33), and we defined the GEISTRA score, an easy to obtain and reproducible clinical tool, that can help us to optimize the use of trabectedin in advanced sarcoma patients. The aim of this study was to identify an easily reliable prognostic score that selects the subset of advanced soft tissue sarcoma (ASTS) patients with a higher benefit with trabectedin in terms of time to progression and overall survival. A retrospective series of 357 patients with ASTS treated with trabectedin as second- or further-line in 19 centers across Spain was analyzed. First, it was confirmed that patients with high growth modulation index (GMI > 1.33) were associated with the better clinical outcome. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with a GMI > 1.33. Thus, GEISTRA score was based on metastasis free-interval (MFI ≤ 9.7 months), Karnofsky < 80%, Non L-sarcomas and better response in the previous systemic line. The median GMI was 0.82 (0–69), with 198 patients (55%) with a GMI < 1, 41 (11.5%) with a GMI 1–1.33 and 118 (33.1%) with a GMI > 1.33. The lowest GEISTRA score showed a median of time-to-progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) of 5.7 and 19.5 months, respectively, whereas it was 1.8 and 3.1 months for TTP and OS, respectively, for the GEISTRA 4 score. Social interaction patterns are relevant to explain (social) travel behavior. As such, the objective of this paper is to comparatively study the factors that influence social interaction frequency among social network members with different communication modes. Based on data from seven surveys on social networks, this analysis seeks to shed some light on (i) the similarities and differences in social interaction frequency patterns, (ii) the relation of personal and network characteristics with observed patterns, and (iii) the extent to which these associations are consistent across contexts, in terms of effect direction and magnitude. A multilevel-multivariate lognormal hurdle model is used to jointly analyze social interaction frequency patterns across all datasets. Level 1 includes information on ego-alter dyad characteristics, level 2 includes ego-level socio-demographic and aggregate social network characteristics, while level 3 includes information specific to each context where data was collected. In line with network capital theory, results show the existence of very consistent associations between social interaction frequency and some network and dyad characteristics such as network size, ego-alter distance, and emotional closeness, which showed some degree of generality irrespective of context. Building up on previous research, results also suggest that the effect of a higher transport cost-to-earnings ratio is more likely to manifest in the tie-formation phase, in such a way that the geographical spread of the network will tend to be smaller, but conditional on such a network distribution, the cost-to-earnings ratio effect becomes negligible. For other variables such as education level, gender and relationship type, effect patterns were less clear, which might be explained by socio-economic, and other contextual factors, as well as methodological differences across studies. The model presented here can provide average levels of demand for social interactions, which bounded by the geographical distribution of networks, can be used to further understand travel demand in urban environments and transportation systems at the local or regional level. The development and application of urban sustainability indicators has gained momentum in recent years, especially since the generation of specific urban indicators for the Agenda 2030. Urban sustainability is a broad concept involving many dimensions, therefore the generation of a short, but comprehensive list of indicators is a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a set of 29 indicators designed to characterise urban sustainability in Chile, which we also expect to be relevant to other cities, particularly in the Global South where issues of poverty and inequality are prevalent. We first outline the process of selecting the indicators through expert consultation. Then we present selected indicators, and the variables used to measure them. Subsequently the set is applied to six Chilean cities that are diverse in terms of population, socio-economic conditions and geography. We show that some indicators highlight negative nationwide trends that are common to the cities, while other indicators reveal notable differences that can be traced back to their local contexts. The CEDEUS indicators provide a complement to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for cities; therefore, a comparison is made with the SDGs.
