The municipality of Tibú, Norte de Santander, depends mainly on oil farms, which produce emissions in the vicinity of the industry, contributing to environmental pollution, affecting animals grazing around them. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals in bovine byproducts, consumed in the municipality of Tibu-Norte de Santander. Sampling was carried out on the sidewalks; Socuavó Norte, J-10, Campo Yuca and P-30, male, adult cattle of the commercial Cebu breed, the quantification of metals Cd, Cu, Mo, Pb and Zn were studied by atomic absorption spectroscopy, using the flame method and the concentrations obtained were processed through the statistical software XLSTAT and its study was based on the analysis of main components (ACP). The results were compared with the European Unions maximum permissible limits, since Colombia does not have a set of rules for this purpose. Itis concluded that the concentrations of heavy metals Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn exceded the limits permitted by the European Union Commission Regulation 488/2012 of 12 May 2014, there fore, the cattle consumed on the Socuavó North sidewalks, J-10, Campo Yuca and P-30 of the municipality of Tibu-Norte de Santander represent a serious danger for the population that consumes it. Objectives. To determine Neospora caninum seroprevalence in nonvaccinated dairy cattle from the Northern plains of Antioquia. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of neosporosis in a major dairy area of Colombia. Blood samples were collected from 1003 dairy cattle in 29 herds located in the municipality of San Pedro de los Milagros, in Antioquia. N. caninum antibody levels were measured by an enzymatic immunoassay (ELISA) and the results classified as positive or negative. Results. Seropositive cattle were observed in all herds, with a prevalence ranging from 7 to 97% and a mean (±S.E) of 37.1% (±4.2). The distribution of seropositive animals by age groups of <1, 1-2, 2-3 and ≥3 years old was 25.5, 30.3, 46.1 and 39.1%, respectively. Conclusions. There is a high seroprevalence of N. caninum in the main dairy cattle area of Antioquia. The large variation among herds suggests the presence of mayor risk factors whose identification would be essential to establish control programs. Considering that any seropositive cow has a greater risk to abort than uninfected mates, future studies should address the epidemiology of abortions that can be attributed to neosporosis and the type of control strategies that could be implemented. The sky-averaged cosmological 21 cm signal can improve our understanding of the evolution of the early Universe from the Dark Age to the end of the Epoch of Reionization. Although the EDGES experiment reported an absorption profile of this signal, there have been concerns about the plausibility of these results, motivating independent validation experiments. One of these initiatives is the Mapper of the IGM Spin Temperature (MIST), which is planned to be deployed at different remote locations around the world. One of its key features is that it seeks to comprehensively compensate for systematic uncertainties through detailed modeling and characterization of its different instrumental subsystems, particularly its antenna. Here we propose a novel optimizing scheme which can be used to design an antenna applied to MIST, improving bandwidth, return loss, and beam chromaticity. This new procedure combines the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with a commercial electromagnetic simulation software (HFSS). We improved the performance of two antenna models: a rectangular blade antenna, similar to the one used in the EDGES experiment, and a trapezoidal bow-tie antenna. Although the performance of both antennas improved after applying our optimization method, we found that our bow-tie model outperforms the blade antenna by achieving lower reflection losses and beam chromaticity in the entire band of interest. To further validate the optimization process, we also built and characterized 1:20 scale models of both antenna types showing an excellent agreement with our simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dense mats of free floating plants (FFP) often produce severe underwater light attenuation and strong oxygen depletion in the water column. In this study, we experimentally assessed the zooplankton response to artificial shading using field mesocosms. During 30 days, we simulated three different light scenarios by mimicking the persistence, absence, and fluctuation of FFP typically encountered in vegetated shallow subtropical lakes. We used dark meshes to simulate the abiotic effects engineered by FFP. Both in the permanently covered and fluctuating situations, anoxia impaired zooplankton development. Anoxia constituted a major driving force in shaping the zooplankton response, whereas the feeding resource availability (phytoplankton) seemed to play a minor role; no top down effect on phytoplankton occurred in anoxic situations. In the fluctuating cover regime (periodic darkness and anoxia), the temporal variation of nanophytoplankton was not affected by zooplankton; once again oxygen availability seemed the main force shaping the zooplankton dynamics. Either periodical or permanent shading, associated to anoxic conditions, impaired the success of small herbivores. Large herbivores and microphytoplankton were negatively affected only under persistent shade and anoxia. In contrast, when neither light nor oxygen limitation occurred, such as in the scenario without shading, top-down control occurred. This study highlights the importance that the oxygen dynamics driven by the presence of FFP exert on the structure and dynamics of zooplankton assemblages and on the top down cascading effects on phytoplankton in warm temperate or subtropical shallow lakes. We discuss the design, operation, and performance of a vacuum setup constructed for use in zero (or reduced) gravity conditions to initiate collisions of fragile millimeter-sized particles at low velocity and temperature. Such particles are typically found in many astronomical settings and in regions of planet formation. The instrument has participated in four parabolic flight campaigns to date, operating for a total of 2.4 h in reduced-gravity conditions and successfully recording over 300 separate collisions of loosely packed dust aggregates and ice samples. The imparted particle velocities achieved range from 0.03 to 0.28 m s-1 and a high-speed, high-resolution camera captures the events at 107 frames/s from two viewing angles separated by either 48.8° or 60.0°. The particles can be stored inside the experiment vacuum chamber at temperatures of 80–300 K for several uninterrupted hours using a built-in thermal accumulation system. The copper structure allows cooling down to cryogenic temperatures before commencement of the experiments. Throughout the parabolic flight campaigns, add-ons and modifications have been made, illustrating the instrument flexibility in the study of small particle collisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • We studied the drivers of planktonic chlorophyll a (Chl a) with a regional approach. • Shallow pampean lakes did not exhibited a positive TP-Chl a relationship. • Chl a was driven by submerged macrophytes, total nitrogen and agriculture. • Total phosphorus was the main driver of Chl a in lakes with submerged macrophytes. • For lakes without submerged macrophytes, Chl a was positively driven by the nearby agriculture of each lake. Although agricultural intensification has been linked with the increment of lake eutrophication and shallow lake research has demonstrated the importance of submerged macrophytes for maintaining water clarity, less is known about the role of macrophytes and the effects of agriculture on shallow lakes of the global south. Shallow lakes in the Pampean region of Argentina are subjected to high anthropic pressure and are classified as eutrophic and hypereutrophic and, in spite of most of them are turbid and dominated by phytoplankton biomass, some remain in a clear-vegetated regime with profuse submerged macrophytes. We studied the potential drivers of phytoplankton biomass (estimated as Chlorophyll- a - Chl a) by applying a regional approach and a model selection process for a dataset of 58 shallow lakes that represent the variability of the Pampean region. For the 58 lakes, the presence of submerged macrophytes, total nitrogen, and nearby agriculture of each lake were the main drivers of Chl a with −1.55, 0.19 and 0.02 coefficient values, respectively. Moreover, a high proportion of the variance in this dataset (37.7 %) was explained by the regional location of each lake (hydrographic systems). For lakes with macrophytes (N = 8), Chl a exhibited a positive relationship with total phosphorus (coefficient value = 3.05), whereas for lakes without macrophytes (N = 50) Chl a showed a positive relationship with nearby agricultural development (coefficient value = 0.02) and 36.4 % of variance explained by the hydrographic system. Our regional approach highlighted the importance of submerged macrophytes in shaping phytoplankton biomass in Pampean shallow lakes. Our results support the idea that the conservation of submerged macrophytes, as well as the control of agriculture in the riparian zones of lakes, will help to stabilize the shallow lakes in clear regime, even in regions highly impacted by agriculture and in lakes under eutrophic conditions.
