Abstract: A new class of auxetic materials, a hexachiral honeycomb structure with good mechanical properties, is investigated through computer simulation and measurement. The electromagnetic properties for shielding applications are taken into account. This new material shows some interesting EMC properties (e.g. −40dB transmittance at 2.4GHz) and promises better performance using different insertion techniques. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Evolutionary algorithms are metaheuristic algorithms that provide quasioptimal solutions in a reasonable time. They have been applied to many optimization problems in a high number of scientific areas. In this survey paper, we focus on the application of evolutionary algorithms to solve optimization problems related to a type of complex network like mobile multihop ad hoc networks. Since its origin, mobile multihop ad hoc network has evolved causing new types of multihop networks to appear such as vehicular ad hoc networks and delay tolerant networks, leading to the solution of new issues and optimization problems. In this survey, we review the main work presented for each type of mobile multihop ad hoc network and we also present some innovative ideas and open challenges to guide further research in this topic. Composites of BaTiO3 (BT) and doped-PZT (d-PZT) micro-particles randomly dispersed in a PDMS matrix were prepared by a molding process. The morpho-structural characterization, performed by SEM and XRD, showed ceramic micro-grains of cubic BT and orthorhombic d-PZT, randomly dispersed in the PDMS matrix. Polarization (P) as a function of the applied field (E) was measured for composite samples, as well as for polymer samples. Hysteresis loops typical for a dielectric material were obtained, but also atypical ones, especially for higher fraction of polymer in composite, lower fields and shorter measuring periods, as a result of the dielectric relaxation in polymer and the presence of interfacial polarization charges at the contact between polymer and ferroelectric. All these composites show very low polarizations (less than 0.2 µC/cm² and 0.05 µC/cm² the maximum and remnant polarization, respectively), caused by the very low dielectric constant of the polymer (less than 10), which drastically reduces, up to 100 times, the electric field effectively applied to the ferroelectric. Weak pyroelectric response was recorded on BT/PDMS, but a typical behavior of a pyroelectric detector was observed. A figure of merit of the material which exceeds 10-4 m²/C was estimated. Abstract: The compatibilizing efficiency of poly(ethylene terephthalate)/low density polyethylene (PET/LDPE) blends has been evaluated by following the rheological behavior during processing, dynamic testing as well as tensile characteristics and dielectric properties to account for the optimum materials structure. The binary and compatibilized blends containing secondary PET (PETr) and LDPE (PEr) and reactive compatibilizing agent as commercial maleated ethylene–propylene rubber (EP–MA) or esterified lignin have been processed by melt mixing in a counter-rotating twin rotors HAAKE RHEOCORD 9000 mixer. The experimental results highlight the possibility of producing materials with modulated and new properties from secondary PET and LDPE by overcoming the lack of interfacial adhesion of polyolefin–PET blends, typical of an immiscible system. Lignin can be efficiently used as compatibilizing agent in PETr/PEr blends. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Composites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles dispersed in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix were prepared by a molding process. Two types of samples were obtained by free polymerization with randomly dispersed particles and by polymerization in an applied magnetic field. The magnetite nanoparticles were obtained from magnetic micrograins of acicular goethite (α-FeOOH) and spherical hematite (α-Fe2O3), as demonstrated by XRD measurements. The evaluation of morphological and compositional properties of the PDMS:Fe3O4 composites, performed by SEM and EDX, showed that the magnetic particles were uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix. Addition of magnetic dispersions promotes an increase of thermal conductivity compared with pristine PDMS, while further orienting the powders in a magnetic field during the polymerization process induces a decrease of the thermal conductivity compared with the un-oriented samples. The shape of the magnetic dispersions is an important factor, acicular dispersions providing a higher value for thermal conductivity compared with classic commercial powders with almost spherical shapes. In this work, new films containing composite materials based on blends of thermoplastic polymers of the polyurethane (TPU) and polyolefin (TPO) type, in the absence and presence of BaTiO3 nanoparticles (NPs) with the size smaller 100 nm, were prepared. The vibrational properties of the free films depending on the weight ratio of the two thermoplastic polymers were studied. Our results demonstrate that these films are optically active, with strong, broad, and adjustable photoluminescence by varying the amount of TPU. The crystalline structure of BaTiO3 and the influence of thermoplastic polymers on the crystallization process of these inorganic NPs were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The vibrational changes induced in the thermoplastic polymer's matrix of the BaTiO3 NPs were showcased by Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy. The incorporation of BaTiO3 NPs in the matrix of thermoplastic elastomers revealed the shift dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) band depending on the BaTiO3 NP concentration, which was capable of covering a wide visible spectral range. The dependencies of the dielectric relaxation phenomena with the weight of BaTiO3 NPs in thermoplastic polymers blends were also demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
