Dust samples were collected from Irish homes. House Dust Mite and storage mites were separated from the dust. The microbiome and resistome of mites and originating dust were assessed using a culture-independent approach. The bacterial microbiome of mites and dust were predominantly populated by Staphylococci. There was a highly significant (P = 0.005; Spearman's rank test) correlation between the bacterial microbiome of mites and the dust. One-hundred and eighteen antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) were associated with mites and 176 with dust. Both contained ARGs encoding resistance for multi drug resistances, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, mobile genetic elements, Beta-lactam, Tetracycline and Aminoglycosides. By contrast, 15 ARGs were found for a laboratory-grown strain of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. A significant difference (P = 0.03; t test) was found in means between the resistome of mites and the household dust from which they emanated. No significant correlations (P = 0.23 and P = 0.22; Mantel test) were observed between the microbiome and resistome of mite and dust samples. In 2050, most areas of biodiversity significance will be heavily influenced by multiple drivers of environmental change. This includes overlap with the introduced ranges of many alien species that negatively impact biodiversity. With the decline in biodiversity and increase in all forms of global change, the need to envision the desired qualities of natural systems in the Anthropocene is growing, as is the need to actively maintain their natural values. Here, we draw on community ecology and invasion biology to (i) better understand trajectories of change in communities with a mix of native and alien populations, and (ii) to frame approaches to the stewardship of these mixed-species communities. We provide a set of premises and actions upon which a nature-positive future with biological invasions (NPF-BI) could be based, and a decision framework for dealing with uncertain species movements under climate change. A series of alternative management approaches become apparent when framed by scale-sensitive, spatially explicit, context relevant and risk-consequence considerations. Evidence of the properties of mixed-species communities together with predictive frameworks for the relative importance of the ecological processes at play provide actionable pathways to a NPF in which the reality of mixed-species communities are accommodated and managed. This study considers artworks from across the modern and contemporary period (with a focus on the 1940s onwards) where writing is presented as incomprehensible to the viewer. This can occur, for instance, where issues related to cross-cultural interaction are being addressed, or more generally where the issue of encounter with an otherness of some kind has become the content of the work. While the earlier part of the analysis will focus primarily on artists of European or North American origin, artists of non-Western birth will predominate in the discussion of more recent art. Amongst the artists discussed are Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Mark Tobey, Lee Krasner, Zhao Wuji, Cy Twombly, Rasheed Araeen, Xu Bing, Oscar Ho Hing-Kay, and Warren Leung Chi Wo. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are soft, electrically powered actuators that have no discrete moving parts, yet can exhibit large strains (10%–50%) and moderate stress (∼100 kPa). This Tutorial describes the physical basis underlying the operation of DEA's, starting with a simple linear analysis, followed by nonlinear Newtonian and energy approaches necessary to describe large strain characteristics of actuators. These lead to theoretical limits on actuation strains and useful non-dimensional parameters, such as the normalized electric breakdown field. The analyses guide the selection of elastomer materials and compliant electrodes for DEAs. As DEAs operate at high electric fields, this Tutorial describes some of the factors affecting the Weibull distribution of dielectric breakdown, geometrical effects, distinguishing between permanent and "soft" breakdown, as well as "self-clearing" and its relation to proof testing to increase device reliability. New evidence for molecular alignment under an electric field is also presented. In the discussion of compliant electrodes, the rationale for carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes is presented based on their compliance and ability to maintain their percolative conductivity even when stretched. A procedure for making complaint CNT electrodes is included for those who wish to fabricate their own. Percolative electrodes inevitably give rise to only partial surface coverage and the consequences on actuator performance are introduced. Developments in actuator geometry, including recent 3D printing, are described. The physical basis of versatile and reconfigurable shape-changing actuators, together with their analysis, is presented and illustrated with examples. Data Science advances in sports commonly involve "big data", i.e., large sport-related data sets. However, such big data sets are not always available, necessitating specialized models that apply to relatively few observations. One important area of sport-science research that features small data sets is the study of recovery from exercise. In this area, models are typically fitted to data collected from exhaustive exercise test protocols, which athletes can perform only a few times. Recent findings highlight that established recovery models such as the so-called work-balance models are too simple to adequately fit observed trends in the data. Therefore, we investigated a hydraulic model that requires the same few data points as work-balance models to be applied, but promises to predict recovery dynamics more accurately. To compare the hydraulic model to established work-balance models, we retrospectively applied them to data compiled from published studies. In total, one hydraulic model and three work-balance models were compared on data extracted from five studies. The hydraulic model outperformed established work-balance models on all defined metrics, even those that penalize models featuring higher numbers of parameters. These results incentivize further investigation of the hydraulic model as a new alternative to established performance models of energy recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article undertakes a rhetorical analysis of two European armed forces museums (the National Army Museum in London and the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden) in order to show how such institutions provide a space for the negotiation of civil–military relations in 'post-military' societies. It argues that both museums construct a world of military professionalism that shields the soldier from potential criticism in the context of contemporary armed conflicts, while encouraging the civilian visitor as democratic citizen to accept their responsibility for the deployment of the armed forces as a matter of policy. The article nevertheless highlights differences in the depiction of soldiers and of warfare in general in both museums, which in turn point to differences in the discourse of war in the UK and Germany. Within-field soil heterogeneity can lead to large variation in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Crop simulation models provide a multi-faceted approach to management considering both soil and plant interactions. However, research using crop models for investigating within field variation in NUE is limited, in part because of challenges quantifying spatially variable soil model parameters. Here soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) and measured soil properties were used to map spatial variations in soil characteristics across a Long-Term Experiment in Norfolk, England. The relationship between plot ECa across the 3 ha experiment and agronomic data across three different nitrogen rates (0, 110, and 220 kg N ha-1) over five wheat years (2010–2020) was quantified. The Sirius crop model was parameterized for two soils representing the extremes of ECa. Sirius was validated using recorded plot data. Site-specific optimal nitrogen and associated leaching risks were simulated across 29 years of weather data. Variation in soil properties had significant impact on measured NUE. At 220 kg N ha-1 mean observed yields across 5 years ranged from 9.0 to 10.7 t ha-1 and grain protein from 11.6% to 11% on the low EC and high EC plots, respectively. On average fertiliser grain N recovery was 19.7 kg N ha-1 lower on the low ECa plots. Sirius simulated the variation in yield, grain protein and grain N recovery to a good level of accuracy with RRMSE of 19.5%, 15.4% and 19.5%, respectively. Simulated optimal nitrogen on the low EC soils was on average 12 kg N ha-1 lower, with >1 in 4 years with optimal nitrogen <200 kg N ha-1. Our work demonstrated that using a combination of proximal soil EC scans and targeted soil sampling we can optimize the data requirements for model parameterisation to support site-specific N management. Future gas turbine engines will operate at higher gas temperatures and consequentially hot-section components such as blades, vanes and combustors, will be subject to higher thermal radiation fluxes than today. Current thermal barrier coating materials are translucent over the spectral region of the heat flux so future coatings will also have to provide a barrier to thermal radiation. The effects of optical absorption and scattering properties of coating materials on the temperatures and heat fluxes through coatings are explored using a two-flux heat transfer model, and promising combinations are identified that reduce the coating–alloy interface temperatures. Lower interface temperatures occur for thickness normalized absorptions of κ ¯ L > 1. The effect of both a narrow and a broad band spectrally selective absorbing Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 based coating materials are then studied. These show that large values of the product of the normalized absorption length and the spectral width of the absorption are required to significantly decrease the radiative heat transport through a coating. Statistical methods used for delineation of field management zones and yield stability are frequently only applied to relatively small areas, with few studies performing rotational, whole-farm economic spatiotemporal appraisals. To enable accurate economic analysis, yield map datasets must contain minimal errors while cleaning procedures are often used to remove errors, it is rare that cleaned data is validated before its application. The objective of this study was to process, validate and combine spatial statistical approaches for a rotational yield map dataset from a whole-farm across 7 crops in a winter wheat based rotation. Developing a framework for using validated yield map datasets to support precision agriculture techniques that are applicable for farm-level decision making. The rotational completeness of a 10 year combine yield map dataset for a 435 ha farm in Eastern England was assessed. The dataset was cleaned statistically, and its accuracy assessed by comparison with recorded yields from trailer weigh cells. The cleaned, validated, and corrected yield map dataset was used to identify management zones across the whole farm using fuzzy clustering. The temporal stability of management zones and economic performance across the rotation was also assessed. Data cleaning methods removed 16% of data points, improving the degree of spatial correlation within the individual yield maps. Independent validation demonstrated varied accuracy of yield maps from combine harvester data and errors in wheat ranged from 0.53 to 1.53 t/ha RMSE. These errors have implications for researchers using combine yield data to develop and validate precision agriculture technologies. This data set required correction before yield data can be applied with confidence for on-farm decision making. Compared to the zones with the highest margin in each field, 34% of zones had an average annual margin loss of >£100 ha. The temporal stability of the resulting management zones also varied. Areas with the lowest economic performance and greatest yield stability across years will potentially see the greatest economic and environmental benefits from precision agriculture techniques. The accuracy of combine yield map data should not be assumed. The application of these datasets, including for the identification of management zones or in developing precision agriculture techniques should attempt to address this through data cleaning and validation procedures. Only then should it be used for on farm decision making, such as identifying areas with the most economic benefit by applying precision agriculture tools such as variable rate nutrient applications. The phases in the ZnO half of the ZnO-In2O3 binary system are natural superlattices consisting of a periodic stacking of single InO2 sheets separated by indium doped ZnO blocks with a spacing that depends on the composition according to the relationship In2O3(ZnO)k. Characterization by combined, atomic resolution, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis indicates that the atomic structure of each InO2 layer consists of a single continuous sheet of octahedrally coordinated InO2. The sheets are also crystallographic inversion boundaries. Analysis of the electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient data at 800 °C indicates that the InO2 sheets not only decrease thermal conductivity by phonon scattering but also create potential barriers to electron transport. The origin of the potential barriers, the role of piezoelectric effects, and their dependence on superlattice spacing are discussed qualitatively. It is also argued that the crystallographically aligned InO2 sheets within individual grains are also transport barriers in randomly oriented polycrystalline materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent decades have seen growing and widespread adoption of glass as an architectural material that can be used not only as window panes but also as facades, walls, and roofs. This is despite glass traditionally being considered a brittle material, not readily capable of handling the high loads required of architectural materials. Architectural glass has enabled the vaulted, transparent structures of many modern airport terminals and eye-catching buildings, such as the ubiquitous all-glass Apple Stores found around the world. Glass has enabled architects to expand their visions of buildings, using light and space to create wonderful new designs. As described in this review, these dramatic new possibilities for how glass is used in architecture have been the result of a convergence of many developments, including a better understanding of the fracture of glass, new processes for strengthening glass, confidence in large-scale finite element modeling of gravitational and wind loads, advances in the lamination of glass sheets, and the availability of ever larger individual sheets of float glass. The concurrent evolution of standards for the use of glass in buildings has also played a role in advancing the use of architectural glass. Advances in the architectural use of glass have their roots in the traditional uses and physical understanding of the properties of glass that have developed over hundreds of years. ICH S6 (R1) states that safety evaluation of biotherapeutics should normally include 2 relevant species when available (i.e., a rodent and non-rodent species in which the test material is pharmacologically active), at least for short-term toxicology studies (generally supporting Phase I trials). For subsequent long-term toxicology studies (e.g., chronic studies up to 6 months dosing duration), there are options to reduce to only one species when justified, including when the mechanism of action of the biologic is well-understood or the toxicity findings in the short-term studies are "similar" in both the rodent and non-rodent species. Across the industry, around 25 to 33% of biologics assess multiple species within short-term toxicity studies but it is often unclear how different companies and regulators are applying the ICH S6 (R1) principles of "similar toxicity profiles" to progress with either 1 or 2 species in the long-term studies, in particular whether the absence of toxicities is considered within this definition. Sponsors may potentially continue to use 2 species to avoid regulatory risk and potential delays in development timelines, representing missed opportunities for reducing animal use, particularly of non-human primates, during drug development. This article summarizes presentations from a symposium at the 41st Annual meeting of the American College of Toxicology (ACT) in November 2020, in which industry case studies and regulatory perspectives addressed considerations and decisions for using 1 or 2 species for long-term toxicity studies, highlighting any common themes or experience that could be applicable for use in future decision-making. Rationally-engineered functional biomaterials offer the opportunity to interface with complex biology in a predictive, precise, yet dynamic way to reprogram their behaviour and correct shortcomings. Success here may lead to a desired therapeutic effect against life-threatening diseases, such as cancer. Here, we engineered "Crab"-like artificial ribonucleases through coupling of peptide and nucleic acid building blocks, capable of operating alongside and synergistically with intracellular enzymes (RNase H and AGO2) for potent destruction of oncogenic microRNAs. "Crab"-like configuration of two catalytic peptides ("pincers") flanking the recognition oligonucleotide was instrumental here in providing increased catalytic turnover, leading to ≈30-fold decrease in miRNA half-life as compared with that for " single-pincer" conjugates. Dynamic modeling of miRNA cleavage illustrated how such design enabled "Crabs" to drive catalytic turnover through simultaneous attacks at different locations of the RNA-DNA heteroduplex, presumably by producing smaller cleavage products and by providing toeholds for competitive displacement by intact miRNA strands. miRNA cleavage at the 5′-site, spreading further into double-stranded region, likely provided a synergy for RNase H1 through demolition of its loading region, thus facilitating enzyme turnover. Such synergy was critical for sustaining persistent disposal of continually-emerging oncogenic miRNAs. A single exposure to the best structural variant (Crab-p-21) prior to transplantation into mice suppressed their malignant properties and reduced primary tumor volume (by 85 %) in MCF-7 murine xenograft models. The recent COVID-19 pandemic shows the critical need for novel broad spectrum antiviral agents. Scorpion venoms are known to contain highly bioactive peptides, several of which have demonstrated strong antiviral activity against a range of viruses. We have generated the first annotated reference transcriptome for the Androctonus amoreuxi venom gland and used high performance liquid chromatography, transcriptome mining, circular dichroism and mass spectrometric analysis to purify and characterize twelve previously undescribed venom peptides. Selected peptides were tested for binding to the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and inhibition of the spike RBD – human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) interaction using surface plasmon resonance-based assays. Seven peptides showed dose-dependent inhibitory effects, albeit with IC 50 in the high micromolar range (117–1202 µM). The most active peptide was synthesized using solid phase peptide synthesis and tested for its antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 (Lineage B.1.1.7). On exposure to the synthetic peptide of a human lung cell line infected with replication-competent SARS-CoV-2, we observed an IC 50 of 200 nM, which was nearly 600-fold lower than that observed in the RBD – hACE2 binding inhibition assay. Our results show that scorpion venom peptides can inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 replication although unlikely through inhibition of spike RBD – hACE2 interaction as the primary mode of action. Scorpion venom peptides represent excellent scaffolds for design of novel anti-SARS-CoV-2 constrained peptides. Future studies should fully explore their antiviral mode of action as well as the structural dynamics of inhibition of target virus-host interactions. This article performs the becoming intimacy of a reading (and, later, writing) group who met once a month for 2 years to discuss Deleuze and Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus. Through this collaborative piece, we explore the question of intimacy as both a form of activism and a mode of inquiry. We ask, "Where is activism as we subvert the hierarchy of academia by meeting as an assemblage of differing perspectives and positions in the university?" Furthermore, we ask, "What does the intimacy that occurred, that is occurring, do for both inquiry and activism?." This article contains two sets of writing from our monthly meetings that we offered as performative conference texts. We contend that it is affect that brings our theorizing to life, and transfers it meaningfully between each other. We are affected by Deleuze and Guattari, by A Thousand Plateaus, and by how we form linkages with our lives to these bodies. Intimacy is what sustains and gives life to our collective inquiry, without which our affect might be more constrained. The complexity of the becoming of "intimacy as inquiry" becomes twofold, as it is not only a becoming of intimacy, love, and care for those in our assemblage but also a reterritorialization of the act of inquiry. Through the act of disrupting power structures in the group of "We 5," the act of writing and presenting this work in an academic context pushes against the striated spaces that exist in the academy, that course through the milieu we occupy, and provides the means and necessity for reterritorializing the epistemic space. "Epistemic intimacy," then, becomes a manifestation of engaging with the inquiry process and embodies an active resistance to the business transaction that the act of inquiry has become in the neoliberal development of the academy. Background: Self-management is a promising approach to improve quality of life after stroke. However, evidence for the appropriateness and effectiveness of self-management for stroke survivors with aphasia is limited. This article reports on the process used to develop a supported self-management intervention for stroke survivors with aphasia (SSWA) using co-production and behaviour change theory. Preparatory research included systematic reviews, and qualitative interviews and focus groups with SSWA, family members and speech and language therapists (SLTs). Materials and methods: We conducted six, 2 hour long intervention development workshops with key stakeholders. The workshops were informed by principles of co-production and the intervention development process outlined by the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW). We also incorporated the findings of our preparatory research within workshops. Each workshop included an introduction, 1–2 co-production tasks and time for feedback at the end of the session. Data were analysed on an ongoing basis so that findings could be used to feed in to subsequent workshops and intervention development. Results: Workshop participants (n = 12) included; SSWA (n = 5), family members (n = 3) and SLTs (n = 4). Together, participants engaged with accessible and participatory co-production tasks which aligned with the BCW framework. Participants engaged in discussion to define self-management in behavioural terms (behavioural diagnosis) and to identify what needed to change to support self-management. Participant's co-produced solutions for supporting self-management and discussed options to implement these in practice. Prototype materials were generated by the research team and evaluated by participants. Intervention functions and behaviour change techniques (BCTs) were mapped to the solutions generated by participants by the research team, after the final workshop. A supported self-management intervention for SSWA was developed which will be delivered by SLTs through community stroke services. Conclusions: This paper reports the process we used to integrate co-production work with behaviour change theory to develop a complex self-management intervention. This is of relevance for researchers looking to harness the strengths of co-production methods and theory in intervention design. Future research will feasibility test the supported self-management intervention developed. The European bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) support high value commercial and recreational fisheries, however the Spawning Stock Biomass (SSB) of the northern Atlantic stock (ICES divisions 4.b–c, 7.a, and 7.d–h) has rapidly declined to an unsustainable level. The decline in SSB has been attributed to high fishing pressure combined with poor recruitment. By tracking juvenile fish their spatial ecology can be identified, and appropriate fisheries management policies designed to boost recruitment can be implemented. Using acoustic telemetry 146 sub-adult European bass (25.2–60 cm fork length) were tracked for up to 370 d across three sites in the southwest of the UK. Tagged fish were detected 2 724 548 times (Range: 166–106 393 detections per fish). Linear modelling estimated tagged fish were resident within 2.4–20.1 km of the site where they were first caught for 42.9–75.5% of the year. Some fish were however resident throughout summer and winter. Individual fish were also tracked moving up to 317 km to other coastal sites, 81% of which returned to their original capture site. Fisheries management should account for the high site fidelity displayed by juveniles and sub-adults of this species and coastal nursery sites should be considered essential habitat. Broadly, Höcke's response to the ZPS's action was characterized by seeking a victim role for himself and his family, from which position he sought to portray the ZPS activists as dangerous elements who themselves had no place in a democratic society. For example, on the ZPS's web pages dedicated to Bornhagen, comments by AfD politicians and supporters decrying the ZPS as terrorists are shown alongside criticism from the Christian Democrats, all under the banner "The AfD's praise for our action." The ZPS also attracted attention from the police, after a complaint that the group were subjecting Höcke to illegal coercion by insisting that they would only end the action if he kneeled before their memorial and asked for forgiveness (Reinsch, 2017).[1] From the point of view of agonistic politics, this approach on the part of the ZPS also has certain problematic aspects. While producing footage of ZPS members in camouflage gear and trench coats, the ZPS had collected publicly available information and images on Höcke and his property, montaging these together in their promotional films to create the impression that an observation had been underway. The photoluminescence of undoped ZnO single crystals up to 1350 °C and the optical absorption of stress-relaxed, epitaxial ZnO thin films up to 1100 °C are reported. The photoluminescence intensity and power dependence with illumination flux are related to the crystal growth methods and stabilize after high temperature annealing. The observation of excitonic recombination at very high temperatures requires high illumination flux. It is found that the zero phonon line model reproduces the shift and the band gap narrowing as well as the free excitonic transition up to the cross-over with a defect level at 2.83 eV that occurs at 800 °C. A phenomenological model of the excitonic recombination band shape, taking account exciton-phonon losses and defect levels provides an excellent fit up to 2.2-2.4 eV (1100 °C). At these cross-over temperatures, an energy transfer is observed between the free exciton transition and defect transitions. However, at temperature above 1100 °C, the decrease of the band gap and the increase of thermal radiation, as well as the restrictions of our experimental set-up and particularly the illumination flux of the exciting laser, limit the analysis of the photoluminescence spectra measurements. Background: Frame registration is a critical step to ensure accurate electrode placement in stereotactic procedures such as stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) and is routinely done by merging a computed tomography (CT) scan with the preoperative magnetic resonance (MR) examination. Three-dimensional fluoroscopy (XT) has emerged as a method for intraoperative electrode verification following electrode implantation and more recently has been proposed as a registration method with several advantages. Methods: We compared the accuracy of SEEG electrode placement by frame registration with CT and XT imaging by analyzing the Euclidean distance between planned and post-implantation trajectories of the SEEG electrodes to calculate the error in both the entry (EP) and target (TP) points. Other variables included radiation dose, efficiency, and complications. Results: Twenty-seven patients (13 CT and 14 XT) underwent placement of SEEG electrodes (319 in total). The mean EP and TP errors for the CT group were 2.3 mm and 3.3 mm, respectively, and 1.9 mm and 2.9 mm for the XT group, with no statistical difference (p = 0.75 and p = 0.246). The time to first electrode placement was similar (XT, 82 ± 10 min; CT, 84 ± 22 min; p = 0.858) and the average radiation exposure with XT (234 ± 55 mGy*cm) was significantly lower than CT (1245 ± 123 mGy*cm) (p < 0.0001). Four complications were documented with equal incidence in both groups. Conclusions: The use of XT as a method for registration resulted in similar implantation accuracy compared with CT. Advantages of XT are the substantial reduction in radiation dose and the elimination of the need to transfer the patient out of the room which may have an impact on patient safety and OR efficiency. Change in global mean surface temperature (ΔGMST), based on a blend of land air and ocean water temperatures, is a widely cited climate change indicator that informs the Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming since preindustrial to "well below" 2°C. Assessment of current ΔGMST enables determination of remaining target‐consistent warming and therefore a relevant remaining carbon budget. In recent IPCC reports, ΔGMST was estimated via linear regression or differences between decade‐plus period means. We propose nonlinear continuous local regression (LOESS) using ±20 year windows to derive ΔGMST across all periods of interest. Using the three observational GMST data sets with almost complete interpolated spatial coverage since the 1950s, we evaluate 1850–1900 to 2019 ΔGMST as 1.14°C with a likely (17%–83%) range of 1.05°C–1.25°C, based on combined statistical and observational uncertainty, compared with linear regression of 1.05°C over 1880–2019. Performance tests in observational data sets and two model large ensembles demonstrate that LOESS, like period mean differences, is unbiased. However, LOESS also provides a statistical uncertainty estimate and gives warming through 2019, rather than the 1850–1900 to 2010–2019 period mean difference centered at the end of 2014. We derive historical global near‐surface air temperature change (ΔGSAT), using a subset of CMIP6 climate models to estimate the adjustment required to account for the difference between ocean water and ocean air temperatures. We find ΔGSAT of 1.21°C (1.11°C–1.32°C) and calculate remaining carbon budgets. We argue that continuous nonlinear trend estimation offers substantial advantages for assessment of long‐term observational ΔGMST. In this introduction to a special issue of Environmental Education Research on New Materialisms and Environmental Education, we begin with a brief overview to this publishing project and to scholarship on new materialisms and environmental education. Against this backdrop, we then discuss various themes of significance arising from the broader tumult of thought that occurs in the 17 papers that bring these areas into conversation. In brief, papers gathered in this collection illustrate a series of engagements with: (1) new empiricism and post-qualitative inquiry; (2) the meeting of politics, ethics, and decolonial theory with new materialisms; (3) conceptions of nature, environment, sustainability and the human subject; and (4) new materialisms as environmental pedagogy. We recognise that readers will imagine, detect and respond in diverse ways to the papers and the thematics on their own terms too, noting that other inclusions in the collection would likely have generated different patterns and affordances for insight, challenge and debate. Thus, we argue that in some senses, the collection must remain open rather than closed, while we also invite further contributions on the topics, that engage with what the collection does and does not offer, and to rework it. In other words, we trust our introduction underscores the immanent performativity expected of many of the new materialisms, and highlights their potential to forge axiological pathways away from dominant onto-epistemologies of environmental education research. In this editorial, we introduce the 17 papers that make up this special issue of Environmental Education Research on new materialisms and environmental education, and discuss themes of significance arising from this collection. As a keystone species the concept 'nature' plays a vital role in shaping our world. In this article, we think with the material turn about the concept nature due to its significant performativity in its role within environmental education and research. How nature is conceived is played out on a massive scale as matter itself is morphed through conceptual processes. Therefore, we focus on the matter(ing) of conceptual abstraction, the physical effects – and affects – of thinking a thing into existence. We initiate a pluralistic thought experiment that purposefully diffracts nature into eight performances, to see what it does. The concept nature performs ecologically and enacts trophic cascades. This exploration highlights feats of racism, classism, androcentrism, colonialism, homogenization, and mass extinction. What we are proposing is an environmental literacy that attends to what a concept is capable of, what a concept can do, and perhaps even what a concept can prevent, post-nature. Exercise training elicits profound metabolic adaptations in skeletal muscle cells. A key molecule in coordinating these adaptations is AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), whose activity increases in response to cellular energy demand. AMPK activity dynamics are primarily controlled by the adenine nucleotides ADP and AMP, but how each contributes to its control in skeletal muscle during exercise is unclear. We developed and validated a mathematical model of AMPK signaling dynamics, and then applied global parameter sensitivity analyses with data-informed constraints to predict that AMPK activity dynamics are determined principally by ADP and not AMP. We then used the model to predict the effects of two additional direct-binding activators of AMPK, ZMP and Compound 991, further validating the model and demonstrating its applicability to understanding AMPK pharmacology. The relative effects of direct-binding activators can be understood in terms of four properties, namely their concentrations, binding affinities for AMPK, abilities to enhance AMPK phosphorylation, and the magnitudes of their allosteric activation of AMPK. Despite AMP's favorable values in three of these four properties, ADP is the dominant controller of AMPK activity dynamics in skeletal muscle during exercise by virtue of its higher concentration compared to that of AMP. Author summary: During exercise, the enzyme "AMP-activated protein kinase" (AMPK) detects the disrupted cellular energy state by binding to the adenine nucleotides ATP, ADP, and AMP, which are the major chemical energy carriers of the cell. How the adenine nucleotides interact to control AMPK signaling dynamics is incompletely understood. In this study, we used mathematical modeling to investigate the control of AMPK signaling by the adenine nucleotides in skeletal muscle during exercise. We simulated the model many times with randomly generated parameter sets sampled from experimentally determined ranges of plausible values. Ultimately the parameters affect four key properties of an AMPK activator, namely its concentration, the tightness with which it binds to AMPK, its ability to activate AMPK by promoting its phosphorylation, and its ability to activate AMPK through allostery. We found that ADP is the dominant controller of AMPK activity, instead of AMP, due to its high concentration relative to that of AMP. We also modeled AMPK activity in response to drugs that activate it, which further demonstrated the validity and applicability of the model. Biodiversity data are being collected at unprecedented rates. Such data often have significant value for purposes beyond the initial reason for which they were collected, particularly when they are combined and collated with other data sources. In the field of invasion ecology, however, integrating data represents a major challenge due to the notorious lack of standardisation of terminologies and categorisations, and the application of deviating concepts of biological invasions. Here, we introduce the SInAS workflow, short for Standardising and Integrating Alien Species data. The SInAS workflow standardises terminologies following Darwin Core, location names using a proposed translation table, taxon names based on the GBIF backbone taxonomy, and dates of first records based on a set of predefined rules. The output of the SInAS workflow provides various entry points that can be used both to improve coherence among the databases and to check and correct the original data. The workflow is flexible and can be easily adapted and extended to the needs of different users. We illustrate the workflow using a case-study integrating five widely used global databases of information on biological invasions. The comparison of the standardised databases revealed a surprisingly low degree of overlap, which indicates that the amount of data may currently not be fully exploited in the original databases. We highly recommend the use and development of publicly available workflows to ensure that the integration of databases is reproducible and transparent. Background: Self-management approaches are increasingly recommended after stroke with the aim of supporting longer-term adaptation, adjustment and condition management. Stroke survivors with aphasia (SSWA) have particularly poor longer-term outcomes; however, the suitability of self-management for SSWA is unclear. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) play a key role in the provision of care for this group of stroke survivors; however, UK SLTs views of self-management have not been explored. Aims: To explore UK SLTs views of "self-management" as an approach in stroke rehabilitation including its application in practice with SSWA. Methods & Procedures: In depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with SLTs from five NHS speech and language therapy services. Interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. Outcomes & Results: Eighteen SLTs participated in interviews. Many SLTs were not familiar with the term "self-management". However, SLTs were positive about the connotations of this term which aligned closely with the values they held about their role and the desired outcomes of rehabilitation. SLTs described multiple aspects of their existing practice which they associated with enabling "self-management" (e.g., self-directed practice of therapy tasks, encouraging SSWA to take responsibility for their own rehabilitation, involving family members in therapy). However, some SLTs identified difficulties involving SSWA as active participants in the rehabilitation process and in facilitating "readiness" to take responsibility for managing in the longer-term. Other barriers to enabling self-management were identified including limited session time for speech and language therapy in the community setting, difficulties involving family members in rehabilitation and a lack of access to other services to support self-management (including specialist psychological support). Conclusions: Making the transition to longer-term adaptation, adjustment and condition management is a complex and challenging task which is likely to require tailored support for many SSWA and their families. Supported self-management may help to facilitate this process; however, SLTs require a structured and clearly defined approach and training to assist implementation in practice. Organisational "buy-in" and support for self-management as a therapeutic approach within speech and language rehabilitation will also be required for successful implementation. The range of the mosquito Aedes aegypti continues to expand, putting more than two billion people at risk of arboviral infection. The sterile insect technique (SIT) has been used to successfully combat agricultural pests at large scale, but not mosquitoes, mainly because of challenges with consistent production and distribution of high-quality male mosquitoes. We describe automated processes to rear and release millions of competitive, sterile male Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, and use of these males in a large-scale suppression trial in Fresno County, California. In 2018, we released 14.4 million males across three replicate neighborhoods encompassing 293 hectares. At peak mosquito season, the number of female mosquitoes was 95.5% lower (95% CI, 93.6–96.9) in release areas compared to non-release areas, with the most geographically isolated neighborhood reaching a 99% reduction. This work demonstrates the high efficacy of mosquito SIT in an area ninefold larger than in previous similar trials, supporting the potential of this approach in public health and nuisance-mosquito eradication programs. Background: The safety and immunogenicity of a highly attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) expressing HIV-1 gag (rVSVN4CT1-HIV-1gag1) was shown in previous phase 1 clinical studies. An rVSV vector expressing Ebola virus glycoprotein (EBOV-GP) in place of HIV-1 gag (rVSVN4CT1-EBOVGP1) showed single-dose protection from lethal challenge with low passage Ebola virus in non-human primates. We aimed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the rVSVN4CT1-EBOVGP1 vaccine in healthy adults.Methods: We did a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 1 dose-escalation study at a single clinical site (Optimal Research) in Melbourne, FL, USA. Eligible participants were healthy men and non-pregnant women aged 18-60 years, with a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 40 kg/m2, no history of filovirus infection, VSV infection, or receipt of rVSV in previous studies, and who had not visited regions where Ebola virus outbreaks have occurred. Three cohorts were enrolled to assess a low (2·5 × 104 plaque forming units [PFU]), intermediate (2 × 105 PFU), or high dose (1·8 × 106 PFU) of the vaccine. Participants within each cohort were randomly allocated (10:3) to receive vaccine or placebo by intramuscular injection in a homologous prime and boost regimen, with 4 weeks between doses. All syringes were masked with syringe sleeves; participants and study site staff were not blinded to dose level but were blinded to active vaccine and placebo. The primary outcomes were safety and tolerability; immunogenicity, assessed as GP-specific humoral immune response (at 2 weeks after each dose) and cellular immune response (at 1 and 2 weeks after each dose), was a secondary outcome. All randomised participants were included in primary and safety analyses. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02718469.Findings: Between Dec 22, 2015, and Sept 15, 2016, 39 individuals (18 [46%] men and 21 [54%] women, mean age 51 years [SD 10]) were enrolled, with ten participants receiving the vaccine and three participants receiving placebo in each of three cohorts. One participant in the intermediate dose cohort was withdrawn from the study because of a diagnosis of invasive ductal breast carcinoma 24 days after the first vaccination, which was considered unrelated to the vaccine. No severe adverse events were observed. Solicited local adverse events occurred in ten (26%) of 39 participants after the first dose and nine (24%) of 38 participants after the second dose; the events lasted 3 days or less, were predominantly injection site tenderness (17 events) and injection site pain (ten events), and were either mild (19 events) or moderate (ten events) in intensity. Systemic adverse events occurred in 13 (33%) of 39 participants after the first dose and eight (21%) of 38 participants after the second dose; the events were mild (45 events) or moderate (11 events) in severity, and the most common events were malaise or fatigue (13 events) and headache (12 events). Arthritis and maculopapular, vesicular, or purpuric rash distal to the vaccination site(s) were not reported. A GP-specific IgG response was detected in all vaccine recipients after two doses (and IgG response frequency was 100% after a single high dose), and an Ebola virus neutralising response was detected in 100% of participants in the high-dose cohort.Interpretation: The rVSVN4CT1-EBOVGP1 vaccine was well tolerated at all dose levels tested and was immunogenic despite a high degree of attenuation. This article examines the mobilization of historical memory as a resource for cultural diplomacy through the medium of the museum. Noting the increasing trend for states to incorporate "dark heritage" of conflict into their cultural diplomacy strategies, the article examines the recent case of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, which has been heavily criticized by the current Polish government for its alleged failure to convey an adequately heroic account of the war to both domestic and foreign audiences. The article demonstrates that the current Polish government has placed great importance on historical memory as a means of persuading European partners of the validity of its vision of European history and of Poland's place within the contemporary European project. However, in its approach to the Museum of the Second World War, we argue, the Polish government has not developed an effective strategy for mobilizing historical memory to influence others. This case study allows us to demonstrate the potential pitfalls of drawing on historical memory in the context of cultural diplomacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The possibility of identifying new classes of oxides having lower thermal conductivity at high temperatures is unlikely as the values are approaching the theoretical minimum. At the same time, the drive for higher engine efficiency requires higher gas temperatures, increasing the radiative heat flux. The significance of radiative heat transfer in the selection of coating materials is examined. It is concluded that optically opaque materials will perform better as coatings under high convective flow conditions, such as on blades, by minimizing radiative heating through the coating. The benefits of engaging students in mathematics classroom dialogue have been highlighted (and advocated) in a large body of research studies, most of which were conducted in Western cultural contexts. Whether such research advocacy can be extended legitimately to encompass practice in classrooms situated in other cultural contexts, such as East Asian classrooms, remains a matter for empirical investigation. In this paper, we problematize the assumptions underpinning this advocacy of "mathematical dialogue in classrooms" by revisiting several conceptualizations of the role of language in mathematics classrooms and by considering particular forms of communication in classrooms often undervalued in the research literature. To support such problematization, we draw upon an analysis of classroom discourse in nine classrooms situated in Shanghai, Seoul, and Melbourne from the Learner's Perspective Study. The results of the analysis demonstrate some interesting variations in the extent to which the discursive practice of each classroom afforded or constrained the opportunities for students to speak mathematically, and its consequences for student learning as indicated by student mathematical fluency demonstrated in the post-lesson interviews. Such variations provide insight into the differences in inspirations and cultural values attached to particular types of mathematical performance. We argue that our theories should anticipate application in culturally differentiated settings and be sensitive to the constraints and affordance that culture might place on classroom discourse practices. This paper presents an analysis of loaded freight wagon dynamics in curve alignments. We investigate the effects of the combined centre of gravity (CCOG) on the running safety of freight wagons and examine proper position of the CCOG. A simple wagon-rail model is implemented using the multibody dynamics software ADAMS/Rail. The simulation model is operated on curve tracks with various radii and velocities and the curving performances are evaluated. The results indicate that the CCOG can be located within a flexible and accurate range. Background: Interest in how stroke survivors might be better supported to manage life after stroke has grown rapidly in recent years, with a particular emphasis on enabling 'self‐management'. Post‐stroke communication difficulties may pose a unique barrier to longer term adaptation and adjustment. It is important to understand how stroke survivors with communication difficulties manage life after stroke and what support may be needed to facilitate this process. Aims: To explore how stroke survivors with communication difficulties manage life after stroke in the first year. Methods & Procedures: A cross‐sectional qualitative study involving in‐depth semi‐structured interviews with stroke survivors with communication difficulties (aphasia, dysarthria or apraxia of speech) and/or their family members at single time points during the first year post‐stroke. A total of 21 participants (14 stroke survivors and seven family members) took part in interviews for the study. Interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. Outcome & Results: A total of six themes were identified: (1) strategies to manage changes to communication; (2) testing communication outside of the home; (3) balancing support and independence; (4) hope for recovery; (5) obtaining support from healthcare professionals; and (6) adapting activities and keeping busy. Stroke survivors with communication difficulties and their family members undertook significant work (practical, relational, emotional) to manage their condition. Adaptation and adjustment was often facilitated by 'doing'; testing out which activities could be managed independently and which required additional support. Some stroke survivors and their family members demonstrated considerable resourcefulness and creativity in developing strategies to manage their communication difficulties. Despite the work undertaken, many expressed a lack of confidence in their ability and feelings of powerlessness and abandonment at the point of discharge from community services. Conclusions & Implications: Stroke survivors and their family members develop personally meaningful and context‐specific strategies to adjust to and manage life after stroke. Future interventions should recognize, support and build upon the active work already undertaken by stroke survivors with communication difficulties and their families. Further support before and around the point of discharge from community services may be needed to help build confidence and skills to manage in the longer term. National heritage, and particularly "difficult" heritage, does not exist in isolation from the heritage of other countries. Russia's relationship to Germany is a salient case in point in the Putin era, in which a more cosmopolitan approach to the history of the Second World War in many European states has been challenged by a reversion to nationalist approaches to this period in Russian memory politics. On the basis of the German-Russian Museum Berlin-Karlshorst, this article explores the possibilities of and limitations to international projects for the development of shared narratives about the past as a phenomenon of cultural diplomacy. Background: Intervention fidelity in health services research has been poor with a reported lack of understanding about what constitutes pragmatic adaptation of interventions and what constitutes failure to maintain intervention fidelity. However, the challenges facing those delivering such interventions have not been thoroughly explored. The aims of this study were to critically explore the challenges in maintaining fidelity experienced by physiotherapy staff and support workers when delivering a complex intervention for older people living with frailty. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of data from a process evaluation of a large randomised controlled trial (RCT). The process evaluation employed qualitative methodologies with mixed methods including a variety of data collection methods, including participant observation, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Thematic analysis was used to make sense of the data. Results: Many therapy staff felt ongoing confusion about what was acceptable to adapt and what needed to follow the protocol exactly. We found that some therapy staff were able to embrace the challenges of pragmatically adapting interventions while maintaining intervention fidelity, others stuck rigidly to the protocol and failed to adapt interventions where it was necessary. Conclusion: It was clear that the understanding of fidelity and pragmatism was poor. While pragmatic trials are vital to replicate real world clinical practice, further guidance may need to be developed in order to guide the level of adaptation that is acceptable before fidelity is undermined. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability, primarily caused by falls and motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Although many TBIs are preventable, there is a notable lack of studies exploring the association of geographically defined TBI hotspots with social deprivation. Geographic information systems (GIS) can be used to identify at-risk neighborhoods (hotspots) for targeted interventions. This study aims to determine the spatial distribution of TBI by major causes and to explore the sociodemographic and economic characteristics of TBI hotspots and cold spots in Nova Scotia. Patient data for TBIs from 2003 to 2019 were obtained from the Nova Scotia Trauma Registry. Residential postal codes were geocoded and assigned to dissemination areas (DA). Area-based risk factors and deprivation status (residential instability [RI], economic dependency [ED], ethnocultural composition [EC], and situational vulnerability [SV]) from the national census data were linked to DAs. Spatial autocorrelation was assessed using Moran's I, and hotspot analysis was performed using Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. Differences in risk factors between hot and cold spots were evaluated using the Mann–Whitney U test for numerical variables and the χ2 test or Fisher's exact test for categorical variables. A total of 5394 TBI patients were eligible for inclusion in the study. The distribution of hotspots for falls exhibited no significant difference between urban and rural areas (p = 0.71). Conversely, hotspots related to violence were predominantly urban (p = 0.001), whereas hotspots for MVCs were mostly rural (p < 0.001). Distinct dimensions of deprivation were associated with falls, MVCs, and violent hotspots. Fall hotspots were significantly associated with areas characterized by higher RI (p < 0.001) and greater ethnocultural diversity (p < 0.001). Conversely, the same domains exhibited an inverse relationship with MVC hotspots; areas with low RI and ethnic homogeneity displayed a higher proportion of MVC hotspots. ED and SV exhibited a strong gradient with MVC hotspots; the most deprived quintiles displayed the highest proportion of MVC hotspots compared with cold spots (ED; p = 0.002, SV; p < 0.001). Areas with the highest levels of ethnocultural diversity were found to have a significantly higher proportion of violence-related hotspots than cold spots (p = 0.005). This study offers two significant contributions to spatial epidemiology. First, it demonstrates the distribution of TBI hotspots by major injury causes using the smallest available geographical unit. Second, we disentangle the various pathways through which deprivation impacts the risk of main mechanisms of TBI. The thermal diffusivity of vapor deposited thermal barrier coatings is measured using an all-optical approach. The method combines CO2 laser heating of the coating surface with detection of the temperature variation in the laser induced Cr3+ luminescence signal from the thermally grown oxide (TGO) formed under the coating during service. The thermal diffusivity is determined from the delay between a surface heating laser pulse and the heating of the TGO. Data analysis is performed using a three layer heat equation model. Various locations on several coatings were investigated with different average heating laser powers and modulation frequencies. The normalized standard deviation was found to be of the order of 20%, which is thought to be largely due to localized variations in coating thickness and density. The advantage of the method described here is that it does not require knowledge of either the thermal properties of the alloy, its temperature, or thickness, and is therefore well suited for measurement on coated parts of complex shape, such as a hot section gas turbine blade. The polarization dependence of the optical absorption and R-line emission of a Cr3+-doped sapphire single crystal have been characterized. The absorption bands, U(4T2) and Y(4T1), as well as the R-line emission are determined to be dipole-like transitions associated with three incoherent dipoles oriented along the sapphire principal crystallographic axes (a,m,c). From measurements using the Muller method, it is found that the polarization of the R lines does not depend on either the polarization of the incident excitation or its wavelength. The σ emission is also an order of magnitude stronger than π emission. The R2-R1 peak separation and the ratio of the R2/R1 peak areas are found to be dependent on both the polarization and the stress directions. Stress in the basal plane breaks the symmetry of α polarization with the R2/R1 ratio increasing along the stress direction and decreasing in the perpendicular direction in the basal plane. The π emission also decreases with stress in the basal plane. However, in both polarizations the ratio R2/R1 does not depend on stress applied along the c axis. The value of the R2/R1 peak area ratio can be understood in terms of a piezoelectric-like effect on the dipole transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of uniaxial stress applied along the principal crystallographic directions (a, m, and c axes) of sapphire on the lifetime of the R-line luminescence doublet is described. All the measurements were performed at room temperature on samples cut from the same sapphire single crystal containing 250 ppm Cr3+ and the luminescence excited with a laser at 532 nm. The luminescence decays were all single exponentials with lifetimes that increased linearly with compression and decreased linearly in tension. The luminescence lifetimes in compression were crystallographically dependent with the variation in the basal plane being an order of magnitude greater than that along the c axis. The measured lifetimes were independent of the polarization of the luminescence emission. The stress anisotropy of the lifetimes is shown to be dominated by the σ emission and is consistent with estimates based on the anisotropy of coupling of 4T2 with the T1u distortion. The sum of the lifetime variation measured along the three principal crystallographic directions is equal to that reported for hydrostatic stresses. This is in agreement with calculations of the orientation dependence of the stress variation in dipole oscillator strength based on crystal field analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Raman spectrum of 5 wt % yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia from 25 to 1250 °C is reported. All six Raman bands broaden and shift toward lower energy with increasing temperature. The shift associated with thermally induced volume changes is shown to be the main contribution for all bands, but does not explain the unexpected negative value of the thermospectroscopic coefficient found for the mode at 260 cm-1 (at room temperature). For all bands, the shift is found to be quasilinear in the range of temperatures considered. As the thermospectroscopic coefficients are large, Raman spectroscopy is well suited as a noncontact, in situ method for monitoring temperature in applications of yttria-stabilized zirconia such as thermal barrier coatings and fuel cells. With repeated actuation, an increasing adhesive force develops between the gold contacts of radio-frequency microswitches until failure eventually occurs by stiction. Detailed characterization of the contact forces and the contact surfaces as a function of actuation cycles for “cold-switched” devices indicates that the increase in adhesive forces in air is attributed to mechanical creep of the polycrystalline gold contacts. The increase in adhesion is observed to be associated with an increase in contact area and depth of contact impression as well as asperity flattening. These morphological observations are related to the propensity for stiction using two nondimensional numbers, the plasticity index ψ and the adhesion parameter θ. Trajectories of the evolution of contact roughness in terms of these two numbers provide insight into the design of contacts to resist stiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We developed an artificial hydrolase based on the symmetrical Pizza6 β-propeller protein for the metal-free hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl acetate and butyrate. Through site-specific mutagenesis and crystallisation studies, the catalytic mechanism was investigated and found to be dependent on a threonine–histidine dyad. The mutant with additional histidine residues generated the highest kcat values, forming a His–His–Thr triad and matched previously reported metalloenzymes. The highly symmetrical β-propeller artificial enzymes and their protein–metal complexes have potential to be utilised in bioinorganic and supramolecular chemistry, as well as being developed further into 2D/3D catalytic materials. A pentapeptide sequence was functionalized with an asymmetric arylated methyl-viologen (AVI3D2) and through controllable β-sheet self-assembly, conductive nanofibers were formed. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and conductive atomic force microscopy, we investigated the molecular conformation of the resultant AVI3D2 fibers and how their conductivity is affected by β-sheet self-assembly. We present 2.5D global, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of magnetically and rotationally driven protostellar jets from Keplerian accretion discs, wherein only the initial magnetic field strength at the inner radius of the disc, B i, is varied. Using the AMR-MHD code AZEuS, we self-consistently follow the jet evolution into the observational regime (⁠|$\gt 10^3\, \mathrm{au}$|⁠) with a spatial dynamic range of ∼6.5 × 105. The simulations reveal a three-component outflow: (1) A hot, dense, super-fast, and highly magnetized 'jet core'; (2) a cold, rarefied, trans-fast, and highly magnetized 'sheath' surrounding the jet core and extending to a tangential discontinuity; and (3) a warm, dense, trans-slow, and weakly magnetized shocked ambient medium entrained by the advancing bow shock. The simulations reveal power-law relationships between B i and the jet advance speed, |$v$| jet, the average jet rotation speed, 〈 |$v$| φ〉, as well as fluxes of mass, momentum, and kinetic energy. Quantities that do not depend on B i include the plasma-β of the transported material that, in all cases, seems to asymptote to order unity. Jets are launched by a combination of the 'magnetic tower' and 'bead-on-a-wire' mechanisms, with the former accounting for most of the jet acceleration – even for strong fields – and continuing well beyond the fast magnetosonic point. At no time does the leading bow shock leave the domain and, as such, these simulations generate large-scale jets that reproduce many of the observed properties of protostellar jets including their characteristic speeds and transported fluxes.
