Stone raw material in the past was often extracted, processed, and used by different individuals. The relationships among these practices make quarries important spaces for understanding how economic interactions function within society and what role access to resources plays in economic organization. This paper addresses the acquisition of raw materials through a focus on chert and limestone quarrying practices in the Maya area. Using three Classic period (200–950 a.d.) case studies from different sub-regions of the Maya lowlands, we highlight both shared and distinct practices and illustrate the roles that these extraction spaces played within Classic Maya economies. We find that heterogeneous aspects of quarrying techniques throughout the Maya lowlands result from variability in local geologic conditions, management structures, and the intended uses of the raw materials. As a result, this paper establishes methods for archaeologists to integrate quarries into their studies of past economies and anthropogenic landscapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large material accumulations from single events found in the archaeological record are frequently defined as evidence of ritual. They are interpreted as generalized deposit categories that imply rather than infer human motivations. While useful in the initial collection of data, these categories can, over time, become interpretations in and of themselves. The emic motivations behind the formation process of 'ritual deposits' ought to be considered using a relational ontology as an approach to understanding how past populations interacted with non-human actors, such as structures and natural features on the landscape. The present study evaluates the assembly and possible function of a dense deposit of artifacts recovered from a Classic period sweat bath at Xultun, Guatemala. Analyses of the various artifact types and human remains in the deposit in relation to what is known of the social history of the sweat bath itself illustrate ontological relationships among offered materials as well as between the offering and the personified place in which it was recovered. We observe that with a better understanding of place, it is possible to evaluate the ritual logic in Classic Maya material negotiations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three new isocyanoditerpenes (5-7) have been characterized from Australian specimens of the nudibranch Phyllidiella pustulosa. The planar structure and (3R,6S,7R) absolute configuration of pustulosaisonitrile-1 were deduced by spectroscopic analyses at 900 MHz informed by molecular modeling, DFT calculations, and computational NMR chemical shift predictions and by comparison of experimental electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data with TDDFT-ECD calculations for the truncated model compound 8. A catalyst-controlled enantio- and diastereoselective total synthesis of the two most likely diastereomeric candidates for the structure of 5 solidified its (3R,6S,7R,10S,11R,14R) absolute configuration. Three individual enantioselective methods provided stereochemical control at key positions, permitting an unambiguous final structural assignment. Isocyanide 5 and synthetic diastereomers 5a and 5c showed activity against Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites (IC50 ~1 μM). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
