Background: Previous research on the risk of dementia associated with education attainment, smoking status, and alcohol use disorder (AUD) has yielded inconsistent results, indicating potential heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) of these factors on dementia risk. Thus, this study aimed to identify the important variables that may contribute to HTEs of these factors in older adults. Methods: Using 2005–2021 data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC), we included older adults (≥ 65 years) with normal cognition at the first visit. The exposure of interest included college education or above, current smoking, and AUD and the outcome was all-cause dementia. We applied doubly robust learning to estimate risk differences (RD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between exposed and unexposed groups in the overall cohort and subgroups identified through a decision tree model. Results: Of 10,062 participants included, 929 developed all-cause dementia over a median 4.4-year follow-up. College education or above was associated with a lower risk of all-cause dementia in the overall population (RD, -1.5%; 95%CI, -2.8 to -0.3), especially among the subpopulations without hypertension, regardless of the APOE4 status. Current smoking was not related to increased dementia risk overall (2.8%; -1.5 to 7.2) but was significantly associated with increased dementia risk among men with (21.1%, 3.1 to 39.1) and without (8.4%, 0.9 to 15.8) cerebrovascular disease. AUD was not related to increased dementia risk overall (2.0%; -7.7 to 11.7) but was significantly associated with increased dementia risk among men with neuropsychiatric disorders (31.5%; 7.4 to 55.7). Conclusions: Our studies identified important factors contributing to HTEs of education, smoking, and AUD on risk of all-cause dementia, suggesting an individualized approach is needed to address dementia disparities. A growing body of literature explores the effect of higher education on the urban–rural divide in China. Despite an increasing number of rural students gaining access to college, little is known about their performance in college or their job prospects after graduation. Using nationally representative data from over 40,000 urban and rural college students, we examine rural students' college performance and estimate the impact of rural status on students' first job wages in comparison to their urban peers. Our results indicate that once accepted into college, rural students perform equally as well, if not better, than their urban counterparts. Additionally, we discovered that rural students earn a 6.2 per cent wage premium compared to their urban counterparts in their first job after graduation. Our findings suggest the importance of expanding access to higher education for rural students, as it appears to serve as an equalizer between urban and rural students despite their significantly different backgrounds. - Abstract
In this research we analyze the struggles and interactions of the government and the Bolivian universities around how engineers and cadres technicians should be trained, and be technical requirements required by the planned modernization, or developmentalism, of the country between 1960 and 1964. We inquire about his visions inherent to developmentalism, the formation of squares techniques as means of that, and their political strategies and available resources seeking impose them. We reveal the influences of these issues on the effective training of cadres technicians; the institutional reconfiguration of higher education in Bolivia, especially its facets subsequent to the creation of the Bolivian Technological Institute (ITB); and the its facets subsequent to the creation of the Bolivian Technological Institute (ITB); and the rearrangements and consequences of political struggles seeking to intervene in modernization planning of the country and its consequences. We retrieved primary data from the following sources: rectorate files and the institutional memories of the Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS), documents newspapers, political newspapers (weeklies, proclamations, pamphlets, union resolutions and assembly meetings, among others), writers of university congresses and rectors' conferences; as well as: laws, supreme decrees, official speeches and essay production. In response to women's changing roles in labor markets, couples have adopted varied strategies to reconcile career and family needs. Yet, most studies on the gendered division of labor focus almost exclusively on changes either in work or family domain. Doing so neglects the process through which couples negotiate and contest traditional work and family responsibilities. Studies that do examine these tradeoffs have highlighted how work–family strategies range far beyond simple traditional-egalitarian dichotomies but are limited to specific points in time or population subgroups. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and latent-class analysis, this article provides the first population-based estimates of the couple-level tradeoffs inherent in work–family strategies in the United States, documents trends in the share of couples who fall into each of these strategies, and considers social stratification by gender and college education in these trends. Specifically, I identify seven distinct work–family strategies (traditional, neotraditional, her-second-shift, egalitarian, his-second-shift, female-breadwinner, and neither-full-time couples). Egalitarian couples experienced the fastest increase in prevalence among college-educated couples, whereas couples that lacked two full-time earners increased among less-educated couples. Still, about a quarter of all couples adopted "her-second-shift" strategies, with no variation across time, making it the modal work–family strategy among dual-earner couples. The long-run, couple-level results support the view that the gender revolution has stalled and suggest that this stall may be caused partly by strong traditional gender preferences, whereas structural resources appear to facilitate gender equality among a selected few. To improve the application of behavior detection technology in college education, the study proposes a new model built on deep CNN, which is used for student behavior detection and analysis in college labor education courses. The study first analyzed the target detection algorithm, and optimized the selected You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) algorithm and its network structure with a series of improvements, and based on this, embedded the attention module into the algorithm structure to finally obtain a new model, namely YOLOv5-O. After a series of experiments, YOLOv5-O reached an average accuracy of 90.1% on the test set, while the application test in the actual teaching environment showed that its average accuracy was 86.7%. This result is obviously superior to the existing technology, which proves the validity of the study and provides strong data support for the automatic detection of student behavior. In addition, in the teaching experiment, YOLOv5-O assisted teaching achieved the most significant teaching effect, and students' achievement improved the most. The feasibility of this method is verified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MULTILEVEL marketing , *MARKETING ethics , *SELF-efficacy , *HIGHER education , *STRUCTURAL equation modeling - Abstract
Network marketing's growth is plagued by ethical concerns, emphasizing the importance of implementing training programs that prioritize integrity. This study aims to analyze how different forms of network marketing training play a role in shaping the marketing ethics of trainees with different identities. It examines how network marketing training shapes ethical proneness of the trainees. Differences in trainee identity (college students vs. incumbent marketers) and training form (college course vs. online training) are also explored. Structural equation model (SEM) is established amongst adaptability, class cooperation, motivation, self-efficacy, and ethical proneness. Through textual analysis, questionnaires, and sim-structural interview, this research conducts three studies to empirically analyze the relationship between factors of marketing training and ethical proneness. It explores the influencing mechanisms of network marketing training on marketing ethics. The relationship between network marketing training and ethical propensity is partially confirmed. The shaping mechanism of marketing ethics is different under different trainee identities and training forms. Positive learning motivation and self-efficacy do not constantly improve trainees' marketing ethics. Informal online training plays a more significant role in shaping market ethics than college courses in network marketing. Lastly, college students are less likely to have their marketing ethics shaped by training than in-job marketers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the winter and spring of 2021, I—a White, female, graduate student—taught a six‐month course surrounding the theme: Disrupting Systemic Racism at our University Through Action Research. I was challenged to lead a meaningful course in a two‐dimensional virtual space, amidst rising death tolls of the COVID‐19 pandemic and the rhythmic beat of calls for racial justice pulsing through our Zoom class periods. This experience opened my eyes as an educator, budding community psychologist, and an antiracist White accomplice. In this critical autoethnographic case study, I recount my experience adapting the community organizing principle of fractals into a pedagogical framework that guided my instructional practices in a community psychology course. In doing so, I echo the call for community psychologists to connect our work more tightly to Black, Indigenous, and people of Color social justice organizers and movements to fortify the field's relevance in the struggle for racial justice. Highlights: The field of community psychology must move forward in its fight for racial justice.Centering activists' wisdom is needed to move the field forward.Undergraduate education should be seen as a frontline for establishing a new culture for the field.Fractals are useful for advancing change work in partnership with undergraduates.A critical autoethnographic case study extending fractals to college pedagogy answers this call. Objective: This study examines the heterogeneous impacts of college education on happiness by gender. Methods: To yield unbiased impact estimates, we take advantage of a natural experiment known as the graduation quota program, which suddenly and massively expanded the opportunities to attend college in the early 1980s in South Korea. Using whether the birth cohorts were exposed to the graduation quota program as an instrumental variable (IV), this study estimates the longer‐term effects of college education on happiness by gender. Results: The estimated local average treatment effect by the IV analysis indicates that men who were induced to attend college by the graduation quota program became happier. However, there was no noticeable impact on women's happiness. Conclusions: Considering that the subjective happiness in our study was measured in their late 30s and 40s, the impact of college on happiness seems to be long‐lasting for men but not for women. Education paradigm is a relatively stable action structure of education and training and its practical effect. The construction of a modern acupuncture and moxibustion education paradigm is a complicated historical process, which not only follows the internal logic of the academic development of acupuncture and moxibustion, but is also influenced by the development of modern education paradigm and medical and health services. With the establishment of modern acupuncture and moxibustion discipline, marked by Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion written by the Teaching and Research Group of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Discipline of Jiangsu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1957, the education and training model of acupuncture and moxibustion specialized talents in modern traditional Chinese medicine higher education is gradually formed, and solidified into college professional education model in the 1980s. Deconstructing the problems existing in the contemporary education paradigm of acupuncture and moxibustion mainly include the contradictions and problems between connotation and structure, formation and development, discipline and specialty, and level type and function. The transformation of the modern acupuncture and moxibustion education paradigm can be promoted by studying industry demands, revising training objective, defining discipline connotation, adjusting teaching content, learning from advanced concepts, and changing teaching modes. Schizophrenia occurs worldwide, and the health, and economic burden is substantial. As one of the common proxies of socioeconomic status (SES), education was reported to be associated with the risk of developing schizophrenia. However, there is no causal evidence about the relationship. This paper explores the health benefits of college education for schizophrenia. Based on exogenous variation in college enrollment across regions and cohorts induced by college enrollment expansion policy, we use instrument variable (IV) estimate strategy to estimate impacts of college education on the risk of schizophrenia with the data from Second National Sample Survey on Disability. We find that college education reduces the risk of developing schizophrenia by 4.2 percentage points. Some further analyses suggest the causal protective effect is only found among men, rural, and low-income individuals. These findings provide new evidence for the causal relationship between college education and schizophrenia, and add to the literature on the health benefits of education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change decision-making happens at the intersection of knowledge, values, and experience, usually requiring action with incomplete information. Yet, climate change education prioritizes improving knowledge gaps, not communication and contextual understanding. Role-playing games highlight the interaction of evidence and values in decision-making; they have also been shown to help participants cope with uncertainty. Here, we used a role-playing activity in 8 undergraduate science class sections to explore how role-playing affected climate change decision-making. We found that students selected significantly different climate proposals based on differing affinities with their characters. Students' articulation of 'uncertainty' and 'concreteness' in justifying their final choices were significantly related to their chosen proposals. Students' understanding of circumstance and perspective in driving different priorities/decisions increased significantly. This activity is scalable and broadly applicable; by empowering participants to discuss data and values and make decisions with incomplete information, we might encourage confident participation in the global climate conversation. As a result of the COVID‐19 pandemic, many college students have been isolated at home and unable to walk into class as usual. This series of protective measures to avoid the spread of the disease may have an additional psychological impact on the lives of college students. The purpose of this study was to propose a strategy for using an intelligent online learning system based on content recommendations and electronic questionnaires in the educational domain. We invited 3000 isolated university students (47.6% male and 52.4% female) to an online trial. It proved to be effective in helping us intervene in students' psychological problems quickly, objectively, efficiently, and in real‐time. In addition, our analysis of the data collected from the intelligent online learning system showed that the degree to which college students' psychological problems were affected by isolation was closely related to students' grade level, family background, major category, and computer proficiency. The current study suggests that the mental health of college students should be well monitored during segregation. Targeted psychological counseling is more necessary for students in upper grades, low‐income families, liberal arts majors, and those with weak computer proficiency to reduce the emotional impact of segregation on students. Practitioner points: During the quarantine period, we obtain more objective and valid data through intelligent online systems.Through behavioral analysis, we understand the psychological tendencies and potential problems of college students. In the isolated environment, teachers can remotely understand the psychological problems of college students, and timely intervention and counseling. At this stage, there is a big gap between the cognition and practice of smart devices in universities and the theoretical development of universities. Theoretical and practical scientific research on university wisdom factors from the perspective of wisdom culture education can sort out the essential attributes of university wisdom in terms of actual practice and appearance and give references for the development of university theory and within the field of wisdom practice. In the age of the information explosion, modern education is developing toward an intelligent system approach. In this cultural education environment, universities in China are paying close attention to the construction of smart schools. Among them, the national Ministry of Education policy document emphasizes the construction of "intelligent education demonstration parks" and promotes the construction and implementation of smart campuses in all aspects. Given this, the paper takes university culture education as an example and explains how to build smart classroom teaching to promote the development of modernization and intelligence in China's education and improve its quality of teaching. This work discusses the social representations that underlie the motivations of students to enter the Licentiate Course in Rural Education (LECampo) at the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The instruments used to obtain the data were: a questionnaire, interview, and focus group. To interpret the information, we used the Content Analysis, proposed by Bardin. As a result, some categories were listed, among them the "Choice of the Profession", discussed in this article. It was found that the motivation of students to attend LECampo is the result of the influence of the environment in which they live and the social representation that this course offers a great opportunity for inclusion in higher education, resulting in a change in life for young people and adults in the field. It was still clear that this entry contributed to reversing a historical framework of inequality in peasants' access to education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faced with the expansion of higher education, resulting from the implementation of public policies to expand access, discussions on democratization, permanence, graduation and dropout gained prominence on the national scene. This article aims to analyze the motivations that culminated in the dropout of students from the Pedagogy course, in person, at a federal university in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais. The methodological procedures adopted to carry out the study were based on the application of an online questionnaire on Google Forms and the performance of two semi-structured interviews via Google Meet. The project was submitted to Plataforma Brazil and the Research Ethics Committee, obtaining a favorable opinion. The data were analyzed using the Sociology of Higher Education productions as a reference, specifically themes related to access, permanence, evasion in higher education (COULON, 2008; TINTO, 1975) and teacher training. The data showed that, among students who did not request support from student assistance, the main conditioning factor for evasion refers to the incompatibility of schedules between work and study, followed by the change of course. Among the students who benefited from student assistance programs, the most prominent reason is the lack of interest in the field. The data reinforce the importance of the role of permanence policies that act both to supply the material and symbolic conditions related to the permanence of students in educational institutions. The anatomy study is part of the basic cycle of disciplines that composes Veterinary Medicine college curriculum, and its comprehension is essential for other courses subject understanding. However, the current student's profile, the reduced time frame of superior education programs, and the multidisciplinary approach nowadays have made anatomy teaching method outdated and ineffective. Addressing the problem we developed an interactive and multidisciplinary platform based on the blended learning methodology, which could serve as a valuable tool for bovine neuroanatomy comprehension. To produce a new study tool, photos from bovine specimens fixed in formaldehyde, platinated brain pieces sectioned in a metameric order, as well as histological slides of the bovine central nervous system were used. These materials were applied to photos and schemes production, that were correlated with image exams correlation, as well as written content and videotaped classes. The obtained content was compiled into a digital platform, that can serve as an effective additional method to bovine central nervous system study. This study estimates the impact of women's college education on their fertility-related outcomes by taking advantage of a natural experiment known as the graduation quota program that massively expanded women's opportunities to attend college in South Korea. After the 1979 military coup, the military regime in South Korea ordered all public and private colleges to expand their college admission levels by 30 per cent in 1981 and 50 per cent in 1982. This study implemented instrumental variable (IV) analysis using the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (KLoWF). Specifically, our IV analysis uses the birth cohorts that were differently exposed to this sudden and exogenous policy change as an instrumental variable to identify the longer-term effects of college education on women's fertility-related outcomes. It is found that college education caused those women who were induced to attend college by the graduation quota program to have fewer children. Furthermore, this study finds that this impact can be partially explained by women being less likely to get married. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study is to explore the stereotypes that students have about agribusiness students. We seek to determine the nature of these stereotypes and how they compare relative to marketing and accounting students. Our intent is to reveal the degree of fit of the agribusiness major within a college of business, as personality congruence may influence the pursuit of a major within a business school framework. Our results show that stereotypes about agribusiness majors fall in between those of marketing and accounting students, which suggests that stereotypes would not appear to negatively affect enrollment within a business school setting. HIGHER education , *DESIGN thinking , *TEACHER educators , *FIELD research , *TECHNOLOGICAL revolution - Abstract
Faced with the technological revolution, teaching-learning has been undergoing constant transformations. Thus, the traditional teaching model is no longer as efficient as it was a few years ago. Thus, this study aims to verify the use of Design Thinking as a facilitating resource within higher education. Design Thinking is an important resource that helps to structure and explore processes within universities, contributing significantly to the environment and pedagogical practices of teachers. However, the use of Design Thinking depends a lot on the teacher in trying to think "outside the box" and develop the creative and innovative spirit with the students. As for the research methodology, bibliographic research was used, which can be seen in the theoretical framework, where books, articles and website queries on the topic were used. To make the research more tangible, a field research was carried out, applied through an online questionnaire used to identify the varied characteristics of public and private higher education teachers, as well as to understand their knowledge of Design Thinking. During the interviews, the diversity of perspectives that teachers bring to higher education was noted. It was also noticed the weakness that teachers have regarding new techniques, resources and tools in the teaching-learning process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article explores the qualitative experience in a public university in the south of Brazil through the implementation of an extension project in the Dean of Student Assistance with the identification of psychosocial indicators of higher education students in Brazil and related interventions. During the world pandemic situation, we aimed to describe the experience with incoming students, called IN, in the community space as a qualitative methodology of communication to strengthen the public higher education student in the institutional territory. Emphasis is given to the Territory conceived as strengthening student subjectivity and building institutional academic actions. The communication methodology followed the realization of IN group workshops in an online/virtual way by the systematization of sending Invitations to INgress students through the Teams application (office 365) with explanations about the objective, methodology and target audience. The IN Workshops have been taking place since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, obtaining active participation results in 2021. The return of filling in the Form was obtained with 491 participants and with 67 students in the weekly IN Workshops. The conclusions point to the favoring of communication between the INgressing students in moments of exchanges in the construction of ideas about presence at the university by the forms delivered virtually and by the participation in virtual IN meetings. Likewise, the creation of the institutional e-mail in@ufpr.br and account on the social network Instagram @in. ufpr is related as fundamental channels of communication in weekly publications of dissemination, objectives and invitation to online workshops. This article, therefore, explores the dimension of student social-emotional communication in minimizing university dropout and permanence, especially for vulnerable social groups, aiming to guarantee institutional responsibility. Interteaching is a behavioral teaching method that departs from the traditional lecture format (Boyce & Hineline in BA 25:215–226, 2002). We updated and expanded previous interteaching reviews and conducted a meta-analysis on its effectiveness. Systematic searches identified 38 relevant studies spanning the years 2005–2018. The majority of these studies were conducted in undergraduate face-to-face courses. The most common independent variables were manipulations of the configuration of interteaching or comparisons to traditional-lecture format. The most common dependent variables were quiz or examination scores. Only 24% of all studies implemented at least five of the seven components of interteaching. Prep guides, discussions, record sheets, and frequent assessments were the most commonly implemented. Meta-analyses indicated that interteaching is more effective than traditional lecture or other control conditions, with an overall large effect size. Furthermore, variations in the configuration of the interteaching components do not seem to substantially limit its effectiveness, as long as the discussion component is included. Future research informed by the present review includes: (a) investigating the efficacy of interteaching in additional academic areas, online environments, workplace training, and continuing education, (b) testing alternative outcome measures, generalization, and procedural integrity, (c) conducting systematic component analyses, and (d) measuring social validity from the instructor's perspective. The State University of Maringá (UEM) proposed the discipline of Health Care, with the objective of preparing students for collaborative practice through active learning and interprofessionality, inserted in the public health service in the first year of graduation. Graduate students actively accompanied undergraduate students, under the supervision of a tutor (teacher), throughout the course. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the experience of a graduate group on their participation in this discipline. This is a study with a qualitative approach with data collected through a focus group with graduate students in Program of Residency in Collective and Family health at the UEM Department of Dentistry in 2016. The data were interpreted by the analysis method of content recommended and categorized. The speeches of the participants were analyzed, and it was found that none of the residents had experience with active methodology and interprofessional learning previously, and also reported that the discipline has strengths and weaknesses. As strengths, they presented greater ease of learning, contact and insertion of the student in the public health system, interdisciplinarity, as well as small group organization. As weaknesses, the immaturity of the students in the face of the methodology, the lack of commitment of some, and the difficulty of adapting to an active teaching model. And as suggestions, the permanence of groups of students in the same basic health unit. The results showed that the postgraduates evaluated positively the participation in an interprofessional undergraduate course, and that this experience was very enriching both in personal aspects and for their professional careers. Objective: to analyze higher education in the health area in Brazil according to the results of the students' performance in the 2019 National Student Performance Examination. Method: a cross-sectional and retrospective study with a quantitative approach and online data referring to 192,715 students from 3,712 health courses, collected in 2020. The students' performance was expressed in concepts, ordered on a scale of one to five. Box-plots were prepared, prevalence values of the concepts were estimated, and the differences were evaluated through statistical tests (α=5%) according to the administrative and management characteristics, as well as those of the cities where the courses were offered. Results: there was a satisfactory level of higher education in health (70.0% with a score ≥3). The Medicine courses were the most satisfactorily evaluated while Speech Therapy and Nursing obtained the worst scores. Public, face-to-face and university education were associated with better teaching quality. Lower levels were found in the North region states, in small towns, outside metropolitan areas and in those under private management. Conclusion: heterogeneity in the quality of higher education across the health courses was verified, indicating its association with the characteristics of the teaching institutions and with the infrastructure of the cities where the courses are offered, pointing out challenges to the quality of health education in Brazil. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, universities had to adapt, in addition to the pedagogical projects of the courses, the actions developed by them, such as the Academic Nursing Leagues. To describe the strategic actions developed by the Academic Nursing Leagues in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Documentary research developed during the months of July to September 2020, based on the activity reports of the Academic Nursing Leagues and the contingency plan of a University in the countryside of Ceará, in addition to searches on websites and social networks (Facebook and Instagram) of the leagues and the institution. The activities developed by the Academic Leagues were structured based on the tripod - teaching, extension and research, although the most important aspect is extension, using online social networks. The University, by remaining active during the pandemic, with actions even remotely, involving students-teachers-community reinforces its social role in the territory in which it operates. AUTISM spectrum disorders , *BACHELOR'S degree , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *AUTISTIC people , *PEOPLE with disabilities , *STEREOTYPES - Abstract
In higher education, the inclusion of people with disabilities, such as autistic people, is recent. The entry of these students is an evolution in the educational context. Thus, it is important to remember that the fact that the autistic student is in the classroom does not mean that he is active in academic activities, and understanding the past content. Therefore, it is essential that the methodology be adapted, so that student inclusion really occurs. In the meantime, this article aims to report the experiences of teachers of a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder from recognition to inclusion in the educational field in a Higher Education Institution. A professor with a bachelor's degree and two graduates were invited. The methodological basis adopted in this research was qualitative, data collection was performed through participant observation, records in a field diary and recorded semi-structured interviews. Through the study, the main findings of the research pointed out that, initially, it was a challenge for teachers to deal with the situation, since most of them did not know how to deal with the student, and their conduct was being discovered on a daily basis, always trying to keep the student's attention. The teachers also reported that the teaching-learning process was a challenge, however, they were able to understand and respect the academic's particularities and thus learned to consider stereotypes and the moments when the student easily dispersed within. of the aulic environment. Institutes of higher education have encountered an increase in enrollment of students with intellectual disability (ID). This increase is due, in part, to societal movements (e.g., inclusive participation in life activities) and federal legislation. There are potential benefits to both individuals with ID and society when students within this population complete college (e.g., earn certificates, a collection of completed courses and experiences, increased future employment opportunities). Nevertheless, there are barriers to college that students with ID need to overcome to have successful experiences, particularly in their academic or functional academic courses. This paper presents numerous instructional technologies grounded in behavior analytic strategies and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) that university faculty might implement in their courses and/or recommend to their students for studying to facilitate the learning of college students with ID and their classmates. OCCUPATIONAL therapy students , *STUDENT health , *TEACHER qualifications , *TEACHING methods , *INTERPROFESSIONAL education - Abstract
Integrated and interprofessional education has been applied as a strategy in the training of students in the health field. Thus, this study aimed to understand how the Occupational Therapy student perceives his integrated and interprofessional training to other health courses. It is a qualitative research using interviews analyzed by the Content Analysis technique. Students from the Occupational Therapy course at a public university in northeastern Brazil were interviewed. The study highlights the students' difficulty in discussing the concepts of interprofessional training and teamwork; it also points out that access to interprofessional practices is small, especially in curricular activities, demonstrating, therefore, that to have experiences of this type in training, it is necessary to be involved in extension or extracurricular activities. It is concluded that the University must stimulate the interprofessional training through the qualification of the teachers, integration of the curricular grids of the different courses, and incentive to the teaching methodologies that intensify the interprofessional practices. SELF-efficacy in students , *COLLEGE students , *PHYSICAL education - Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the perceptions of self-efficacy (SE) of university students of Physical Education from a public institution of higher education, relating the perception to personal, academic and professional characteristics. A total of 246 students undergraduate in courses of Physical Education participated in the study. The results obtained in the characterization form and in the Self-efficacy Scale in Higher Education were analyzed in the SPSS program by means of descriptive statistics (absolute and relative frequencies, median) and inferential (Chi-square, Adjusted Residues, Cramer's V). In general, the evidence revealed associations between student (general, academic, regulatory, proactive, social, and management) dimensions and the receipt of research and monitoring scholarships (non-scholarship
Male) and the presence of an employment relationship (yes> no). The predominance of lower AE scores, regardless of the stage of the student's education, as well as the apparent lack of impact of extension scholarships on student AE levels indicate the need to deepen student development throughout the course, as well as the implementation of the projects and activities of the scholarship extension students in the investigated institution. This paper explores police chiefs' opinions about the utility of a college education for police officers. Arguments for and against requiring a college degree for local police officers have been discussed in the literature for years, but mostly involve measures of officers' performance and opinions. The data used in this study come from survey responses of a sample of 98 police chiefs in western and central parts of a mid-Atlantic state. The association of variables, such as number of officers in the department, the extent to which the department gives hiring preferences to those with more education, the department's involvement in community policing strategies, and the chief's level of education with the chief's opinion about the favorability of college education for police officers is explored using regression analyses. In addition, an interaction effect between a police chief's level of education and his or her department's involvement in community policing on the level of a police chief's agreement with statements favorable to having college-educated officers is tested. Policy implications are discussed, with an emphasis on how police chiefs play a role in shaping educational standards for police officers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the cost of college education continues climbing, college affordability eludes many low- to moderate-income families. Children's Savings Accounts (CSAs) have been proposed as potential resources to build assets and help save for postsecondary education. While a large body of CSA research consists of testing relationships between program participation and well-being indicators, few endeavors have been dedicated to understanding CSA participants' program experiences. This study analyzes in-depth interviews with parents of children enrolled in a statewide CSA program to gain an understanding of families' experiences of saving for postsecondary education. Specifically, this study aims to understand the implementation of the program related to participant enrollment and the extent to which the program influenced participants and encouraged saving for postsecondary education, if at all. Findings on parents' experiences enrolling in the Harold Alfond College Challenge (HACC), perceived influence of HACC participation, and experiences of saving for postsecondary education offer insights on the design and implementation of future CSA programs. This article comes from a PhD research and proposed to problematize about the precarious concept in the face of changes in the world of work in a context of structural crisis of capital. It is noteworthy that the precariat is a conjunctural, polysemic term and is in dispute. Based on authors that discuss this category in depth: Guy Standing (2015), Ruy Braga (2013/2017) and Alves (2012/2015) were used. The methodology used is of a qualitative character, based on documentary analysis and results of empirical research, with a view to indicating the urgency of the precariat and its relationship with education. Therefore, to inquire about the precariat is to give visibility and meaning to this new proletarian layer that emerges in the world of work and that is in full swing. Finally, it is affirmed that we live in flexible times of rights and in that fluidity the concept of precariousness that is maturing and inserted in the eye of the hurricane emerges, in which the structural crisis of capital is revealed. A recent issue of Topics in Cognitive Science featured 11 thoughtful commentaries responding to our article "What happened to cognitive science?" (Núñez et al., 2019). Here, we identify several themes that arose in those commentaries and respond to each. Crucial to understanding our original article is the fundamental distinction between multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary endeavors: Cognitive science began (and has stayed) as multidisciplinary but has failed to move on to form a cohesive interdisciplinary field. We clarify and elaborate our original argument and reiterate the importance of a data‐driven evaluation of the current status of the field, which exhibits a marked disciplinary imbalance, a lack of a coherent conceptual core, and a striking absence of a consistent curriculum in the institutions that grant degrees in this domain. Half a century after the creation of cognitive science, it may now be a good time to revisit goals and visions for how to best approach the ever‐fascinating scientific study of the mind(s). Dietary supplement (DS) use is increasing among college students. Early adulthood is a critical developmental stage when behavioral trends are established with potential health implications. Many studies have suggested a proper college education on DSs is needed, but no follow-up reports exist in the literature. The purpose of the study was to compare DS use in college students with and without a formal education on DSs. An anonymous survey was sent over electronic mailing lists of different social and professional student groups, including students in the health and wellness studies (HWS) minor (HM) at Binghamton University. A total of 308 students completed the study. A statistical framework using multivariate analyses was designed to assess pattern of use and identify variables of interest. Principal component analysis recognized five patterns collectively contributing to 66.75% of the variance. PC 1 characterized as tobacco use, PC 2 labeled as body weight, PC 3 categorized as exercise, PC 4 labeled as educated use, and PC 5 is considered Greek-life lifestyle. Participants were then partitioned into HM versus HWS nonminor (NM). Common factor analysis was performed to extract significant variables pertaining to each pattern. Results reflected driving forces common to both groups. However, new trends surfaced in HM. A regression analysis suggests that DS use in HM is based on knowledge, whereas NM use is specifically targeted toward certain lifestyles. In addition, HM are more likely to discontinue a DS with formal knowledge. Therefore, college education on DS may be promoting a healthy pattern of supplement use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent rise in antisemitism, particularly among students in elite universities, has led to a discussion about how Jews can protect themselves. The author reflects on their own experiences of being Jewish and the self-segregation that occurred within their community. They argue that while self-segregation may seem like a step backward, it can be a necessary response to combat the attacks on Jews that come with a swing towards leftist politics. The author suggests that self-segregation provides companionship and strength for Jews in the face of antisemitism. [Extracted from the article]

The objective of this study was to analyze the development and expansion of undergraduate nursing courses in Brazil from 2004 to 2017. This is an exploratory study of quantitative nature through documentary data provided by Inep. The expansion took place primarily in the private sphere with the Southeast region responsible for most courses. The expansion was stimulated by federal programs to support access and permanence. There has been expansion of courses in the North and Northeast regions, which is not observed in the rest of Brazil, where there is a slowdown in the expansion and extinction of courses. Distance education was identified as a reality in the area. It is concluded that the expansion of courses mostly private, with a tendency to deceleration, and extinction in the South and Southeast regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EDUCATIONAL intervention , *TIME management , *COLLEGE students , *STATE universities & colleges - Abstract
This research investigates the effectiveness of an early academic intervention in Principles of Economics courses at a large public university. After the end of the fourth week of classes, students who fell below a 70% threshold on a performance measure, or had an attendance rate below 75%, were referred to the university's Student Success Center for additional academic support. A referral consisted of students being informed of their status and being given optional assistance in course specific skills through tutoring, as well as training in general skills like time management and study skills. Using a regression discontinuity framework at the referral threshold, we find that the performance intervention improved student scores on common questions on the final exam by 6.5 to 7.5 percentage points for students at or near the performance threshold. The gains are particularly large for students who entered college with below average math placement scores. These results indicate that low-cost light-touch interventions may significantly affect student academic performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to reflect on the genesis of popular courses in Brazil, the contextualization of indicators on education in the municipality of Limeira and the creation of the "Pre-vestibular Colmeia course - young people building their future projects. For this, a bibliographic review work was carried out taking as reference the Brazilian legislation and themes with emphasis on the right to education. In addition, there are experience reports about the performance of the Colmeia in the community, as it is an initiative that adds to the social movements of claiming for social justice, democracy and access to higher education. It is noteworthy that the composition of this article is quite unique, since it is based on a joint work involving teachers and former teachers of the course (who are undergraduates or postgraduates), and project coordinators (PhD teachers from State University of Campinas). The Colmeia, by bringing student and teacher to a place of common speech, favors the exercise of sharing different knowledge. In this proposal, learning becomes not only objective, but a process of knowledge and recognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our study examines the impact of college education on individuals' ideological orientations (identifying as politically liberal or conservative) using a massive expansion of opportunities to attend college known as the graduation quota program in South Korea. A 1979 military coup in South Korea mandated that all public and private colleges expand their college admission quotas by thirty percent in 1981 and fifty percent in 1982. As an ideal natural experiment for our study, the mandatory increases in college enrollment happened quickly and exogenously in a short timeframe. We use the birth cohorts that were exposed to this abrupt policy change as an instrumental variable (IV) to identify the long-term effects of college education on political preferences. We find that the enrollment expansion caused those individuals who were induced to attend college by the graduation quota program to be more politically liberal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COLLEGE curriculum , *SUSTAINABILITY , *CLEAN energy , *CHEMISTRY , *CARBON cycle , *ENVIRONMENTAL chemistry - Abstract
Sustainable development and sustainability are two widely used umbrella concepts, both "brilliantly ambiguous." Many fields of study, including engineering, business, the humanities, and the sciences offer opportunities for instructors to connect content with sustainability. As the central science, chemistry is surely one of them. This paper issues a call for action to chemistry instructors to build stronger connections in the college chemistry curriculum to the local, regional and global challenges that we face on our planet. These challenges, multi‐faceted and multi‐disciplinary, include providing clean energy, protecting the environment and stewarding its resources, employing wise agricultural practices to supply food, and insuring clean water and clean air to those in all communities. As a chemical concept, the carbon cycle connects to challenges such as these. It is presented as a possibility for building stronger connections to sustainability in the curriculum.
