Ultrafast broadband transient reflectivity experiments are performed to study the interplay between the nonequilibrium dynamics of the pseudogap and the superconducting phases in Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O8+δ. Once superconductivity is established, the relaxation of the pseudogap proceeds ~2 times faster than in the normal state, and the corresponding transient reflectivity variation changes sign after --0.5 ps. The results can be described by a set of coupled differential equations for the pseudogap and for the superconducting order parameter. The sign and strength of the coupling term suggest a remarkably weak competition between the two phases, allowing their coexistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we report extensive ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity experiments on overdoped Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8+δ single crystals (Tc = 78 K) aimed to clarify the nature of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. The data show a lack of the quasiparticle decay time divergence at the fluence required to induce this phase transition, in contrast to the thermally driven phase transition observed at Tc and at variance with recently reported photoinduced transitions from charge-density and spin-density waves to a metal. Our data demonstrate the nonthermal character of the superconducting-to-normal-state photoinduced phase transition. Unveiling the nature of the bosonic excitations that mediate the formation of Cooper pairs is a key issue for understanding unconventional superconductivity. A fundamental step toward this goal would be to identify the relative weight of the electronic and phononic contributions to the overall frequency (Ω)-dependent bosonic function, Π(Ω). We performed optical spectroscopy on Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O8+δ crystals with simultaneous time and frequency resolution; this technique allowed us to disentangle the electronic and phononic contributions by their different temporal evolution. The spectral distribution of the electronic excitations and the strength of their interaction with fermionic quasiparticles fully account for the high critical temperature of the superconducting phase transition. Time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is one of the developing techniques enabled by the advent of X-ray free electron laser (FEL). It is important to evaluate how the FEL jitter, which is inherent in the self-amplified spontaneous emission process, influences the RIXS measurement. Here, we use a microchannel plate (MCP) based Timepix soft X-ray detector to conduct a time-resolved RIXS measurement at the Ti L3-edge on a charge-density-wave material TiSe2. The fast parallel Timepix readout and single photon sensitivity enable pulse-by-pulse data acquisition and analysis. Due to the FEL jitter, low detection efficiency of spectrometer, and low quantum yield of RIXS process, we find that less than 2% of the X-ray FEL pulses produce signals, preventing acquiring sufficient data statistics while maintaining temporal and energy resolution in this measurement. These limitations can be mitigated by using future X-ray FELs with high repetition rates, approaching MHz such as the European XFEL in Germany and LCLS-II in the USA, as well as by utilizing advanced detectors, such as the prototype used in this study. Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures with promising prospects for applications in data storage. They can form a lattice state due to competing magnetic interactions and are commonly found in a small region of the temperature—magnetic field phase diagram. Recent work has demonstrated that these magnetic quasi-particles fluctuate at the μeV energy scale. Here, we use a coherent x-ray correlation method at an x-ray free-electron laser to investigate these fluctuations in a magnetic phase coexistence region near a first-order transition boundary where fluctuations are not expected to play a major role. Surprisingly, we find that the relaxation of the intermediate scattering function at this transition differs significantly compared to that deep in the skyrmion lattice phase. The observation of a compressed exponential behavior suggests solid-like dynamics, often associated with jamming. We assign this behavior to disorder and the phase coexistence observed in a narrow field-window near the transition, which can cause fluctuations that lead to glassy behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases and their role in the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition in Pr1-xCaxMnO3 are revealed via ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction and broadband optical reflectivity measurements. The antiferromagnetic scattering signal and ferromagnetically sensitive reflectivity measurements show similar, strongly temperature dependent time scales. We attribute the common dynamics to an activation barrier between the equilibrium insulating phase and the photoinduced metallic phase related to interactions between the phase-separated ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic insulating phases. We report an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy method that exploits the recent development of the two-pulse mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source. By using coherent resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, we studied spontaneous fluctuations on nanosecond time scales in thin films of multilayered Fe/Gd that exhibit ordered stripe and Skyrmion lattice phases. The correlation time of the fluctuations was found to differ between the Skyrmion phase and near the stripe-Skyrmion boundary. We investigate the lattice coupling to the spin and charge orders in the striped nickelate, La1.75Sr0.25NiO4, using time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering. Lattice-driven dynamics of both spin and charge orders are observed when the pump photon energy is tuned to that of an Eu bond-stretching phonon.
