Background: Chronic malnutrition is a condition associated with negative impacts on physical and cognitive development. It is multi-causal and can start very early in life, already in utero, thus it is especially challenging to find appropriate interventions to tackle it. The government of Angola is implementing a standard of care program with potential to prevent it, and the provision of cash transfers and the supplementation with small quantity lipid-based nutrients (SQ-LNS) are also promising interventions. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the standard of care program alone and of the standard of care plus a cash transfer intervention in the lineal growth of children less than 2 years old and compare it to the effectiveness of a nutrition supplementation plus standard of care program in Southern Angola. Methods/design: The three-arm parallel cluster randomised controlled trial is set in four communes of Huila and Cunene provinces. Clusters are villages or neighbourhoods with a population around 1075 people. A total of twelve clusters were selected per arm and forty pregnant women are expected to be recruited in each cluster. Pregnant women receive the standard of care alone, or the standard of care plus unconditional cash transfer or plus nutritional supplementation during the first 1000 days, from pregnancy to the child reaching 24 months. The primary outcome is the prevalence of stunting measured as height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) < -2 in children below 2 years. Impact will be assessed at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of children's age. Secondary outcomes include mortality, morbidity, caring, hygiene and nutrition behaviours and practices, and women and children's dietary diversity. Quantitative data are also collected on women's empowerment, household food security, expenditure and relevant clinical and social events at baseline, endline and intermediate time points. Discussion: The results will provide valuable information on the impact of the standard of care intervention alone as well as combined with an unconditional cash transfer intervention compared to a nutrition supplementation plus standard of care intervention, carried out during the first 1000 days, in the children´s growth up to 2 years and related outcomes in Southern Angola. Post-harvest losses are one of the major livelihood challenges for farmers in the Global South. The use of drying technologies to preserve agricultural products has been promoted as a particular solution to address this challenge. In this regard, we designed and tested a passive indirect solar dryer for drying agricultural products as an alternative to open sun drying (OSD) in Gurue district, Central Mozambique, using amaranth leaves and maize. In addition, a sensorial analysis was conducted by randomly selecting a group of 60 adults who evaluated the texture, aroma and color of dried amaranth and maize grains. Compared to OSD, the passive indirect solar dryer reduced drying time and increased the thermal efficiency. Evaluation of sensory quality attributes showed that passive indirect solar drying outperforms OSD. Practical applications This study evaluates the performance of a passive indirect solar dryer, a sustainable alternative to conventional food preservation technologies (e.g., refrigeration) that are not affordable to resource-constrained communities. The use of passive solar dryers, if carried out correctly, creates the possibility for poor rural households to safely store and increase shelf life of food. In addition, the acceptability of products dried in the passive indirect solar dryer is evaluated. The concentration of atmospheric tracers in groundwater samples collected from springs and deep wells is, in most cases, the result of a mixture of waters with a wide range of residence times in the ground. Such is the case of an unconfined aquifer recharged over all its surface area. Concentrations greatly differ from the homogeneous residence time case. Data interpretation relies on knowledge of the groundwater flow pattern. To study relatively large systems, the conservative ion chloride and the decaying radiocarbon ( 14 C) are considered. Radiocarbon ( 14 C) activity in groundwater, after correction to discount the non-biogenic contribution, is often taken as an indication of water age, while chloride can be used to quantify recharge. In both cases, the observed tracer content in groundwater is an average value over a wide range which is related to water renewal time in the ground. This is shown considering an unconfined aquifer recharged all over its area under arid conditions, in which a period of greater recharge happened some millennia ago. The mathematical solution is given. As the solution cannot be made general, to show and discuss the changes in water reserve and in chloride and radiocarbon concentration (apparent ages), two scenarios are worked out, which are loosely related to current conditions in Northern Chile. It is shown that tracer concentration and the estimated water age are not directly related to the time since recharge took place. The existence of a previous wetter-than-present period has an important and lasting effect on current aquifer water reserves and chloride concentration, although the effect on radiocarbon activity is less pronounced. Chloride concentrations are smaller than in current recharge and apparent 14 C ages do not coincide with the timing, duration and characteristics of the wet period, except in the case in which recharge before and after the wet period is negligible and dead aquifer reserves are non-significant. The use of chloride concentration in springs as a proxy of chloride concentration in recharge to estimate recharge from atmospheric deposition leads to recharge value larger than the real one and it approaches the wet period recharge. Drawing inferences about radiocarbon data and recharge by the chloride balance method has rarely been taken into account before. It is important to consider the variable aquifer groundwater reserve. The time series of stable water isotope composition relative to IAEA-GNIP meteorological stations located in alpine zones are analyzed in order to study how the amplitude of the seasonal isotopic composition of precipitation ( A δ ) varies along a vertical transect. A clear relationship between A δ and local evaporation is obtained, with slopes of − 0.87 ‰/100 mm/yr and − 7.3 ‰/100 mm/yr for A δ 18 O and A δ 2 H , respectively. When all sampling points of the vertical transect receive the same moisture sources, then a linear relationship between A δ and elevation is obtained, with vertical gradients of 0.16 ‰/100 mm/yr and 1.46 ‰/100 mm/yr for A δ 18 O and A δ 2 H , respectively. In many of the alpine watersheds of Sierra Nevada (Southern Spain) exists an ancient network of dug canals that collect, transport and facilitate the recharge the snowmelt in the underlying aquifer during the spring season. This practice, known as careos , in the lower part of the watersheds supply drinking water as spring discharge during the dry season. To study how this managed recharge technique modifies the natural response of these basins this work focuses on characterizing the hydrological behavior of one of the sites, the Berchules watershed. The mechanisms for mineralization of groundwater are based on geochemical processes such as evapo-concentration in the soil layer and silicate mineral weathering due to dissolved CO 2 originated from both soil biogenic processes and the atmosphere. Groundwater presents a main hydrogeochemical calcium‑magnesium-bicarbonate type facies, which is associated to groundwater flowing through the upper weathered silicates and quickly drained through springs located in the uplands and in the intermediate altitude catchment zone. Additionally, in the lower part of the basin some springs discharge mineralized groundwater with a sodium–calcium–bicarbonate composition associated to regional groundwater flow. In natural conditions, this hydrogeological system behaves as a sloping aquifer, occurring recharge between 1400 and 2500 m a.s.l. The springs discharge groundwater with an isotopic content and temperature in coherence with the local rainfall isotopic and thermal atmospheric altitudinal lines. Nevertheless, once the careo recharge begins the affected springs reveal the fingerprint of the concentrated recharge system by blurring the fingerprint of both the isotopic and thermal altitudinal dependence in the springs discharge. This validates the previous conceptual model and supports average recharge values of 141 ± 140 mm/yr and total average water resources of 181 ± 111 mm/yr which include a 40% increase in the study period due to the effect of the acequias de careo . Salt flat brines are a major source of minerals and especially lithium. Moreover, valuable wetlands with delicate ecologies are also commonly present at the margins of salt flats. Therefore, the efficient and sustainable exploitation of the brines they contain requires detailed knowledge about the hydrogeology of the system. A critical issue is the freshwater-brine mixing zone, which develops as a result of the mass balance between the recharged freshwater and the evaporating brine. The complex processes occurring in salt flats require a three-dimensional (3D) approach to assess the mixing zone geometry. In this study, a 3D map of the mixing zone in a salt flat is presented, using the Salar de Atacama as an example. This mapping procedure is proposed as the basis of computationally efficient three-dimensional numerical models, provided that the hydraulic heads of freshwater and mixed waters are corrected based on their density variations to convert them into brine heads. After this correction, the locations of lagoons and wetlands that are characteristic of the marginal zones of the salt flats coincide with the regional minimum water (brine) heads. The different morphologies of the mixing zone resulting from this 3D mapping have been interpreted using a two-dimensional (2D) flow and transport numerical model of an idealized cross-section of the mixing zone. The result of the model shows a slope of the mixing zone that is similar to that obtained by 3D mapping and lower than in previous models. To explain this geometry, the 2D model was used to evaluate the effects of heterogeneity in the mixing zone geometry. The higher the permeability of the upper aquifer is, the lower the slope and the shallower the mixing zone become. This occurs because most of the freshwater lateral recharge flows through the upper aquifer due to its much higher transmissivity, thus reducing the freshwater head. The presence of a few meters of highly permeable materials in the upper part of these hydrogeological systems, such as alluvial fans or karstified evaporites that are frequently associated with the salt flats, is enough to greatly modify the geometry of the saline interface. Groundwater discharge to the Mundo River (SE, Spain) has been investigated from 2011 to 2013 by means of 222 Rn activities in river water and groundwater. Starting nearby the river source, some 50 km of river channel have been studied. The Mundo River is located in the water stressed region of the Segura River Basin. Identifying and quantifying groundwater discharge to rivers is essential for the Hydrological Plan of the Segura Basin Authority. Four main areas of groundwater discharge to the river have been identified by means of 222 Rn. Moreover, groundwater fluxes have been quantified using radon activities and, when possible, have been validated with chloride mass balances. The uncertainty range (± 2σ) of all water balances has also been assessed. Groundwater discharge ( Q GW ) values estimated by radon mass balances (RMB) and chloride mass balances (CMB) were similar in the river tracts and/or dates in which surface inputs from tributaries were null or negligible. This adds confidence to the Q GW values estimated by RMB in the reaches were CMB could not be performed due to the existence of ungauged surface inputs, as is the case of the upper basin of the Mundo River, as well as to the applicability of the method to similar situations. Quantification of groundwater discharge allowed identifying Ayna zone as the main gaining reach of the studied area, with up to 29,553 ± 8667 m 3 day − 1 in year 2011. Overall, the total Q GW estimated by means of RMB for the studied area was 8–16% of the total river flow. The results are coherent with the meteorological conditions of the study period (average rainfall around 450 mm/y) and also with the undisturbed situation of the aquifers discharging to the Mundo River in the considered area. The Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, located in the Southern Pyrenees, constitutes the highest karst system in Western Europe. No previous studies regarding its geochemical and isotopic groundwater characterization are available in this area. This work presents the results of field and sampling campaigns carried out between July 2007 and September 2013. The groundwater presents high calcium bicarbonate contents due to the occurrence of upper Cretaceous and lower Paleocene–Eocene carbonate materials in the studied area. Other relevant processes include dissolution of anhydrite and/or gypsum and incongruent dissolution of Mg-limestone and dolomite. The water stable isotopes (δ 18 O, δ 2 H) show that the oceanic fronts from the Atlantic Ocean are responsible for the high levels of precipitation. In autumn, winter, and spring, a deuterium excess is found in the recharge water, which could be related to local atmospheric transport of low-altitude snow sublimation vapour and its later condensation on the snow surface at higher altitude, where recharge is mostly produced. The recharge zones are mainly between 2500 m and 3200 m a.s.l. The tritium content of the water suggests short groundwater transit times. The isotopic composition of dissolved sulphate points to the existence of regional fluxes mixed with local discharge in some of the springs. This work highlights the major role played by the altitude difference between the recharge and discharge zones in controlling the chemistry and the vertical variability of the isotopic composition in high-altitude karst aquifers. This paper presents the application of a new multi-purpose facility for electromagnetic tests to the measurement of the influence of radomes on the radiation of an antenna. The antenna under test is part of a project for mounting a small, low-cost, low-power electronic system in the pod of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The shape of the radome is restricted to the pod physical specifications, but several materials could be tested to assess its effect on the antenna, and to select the best fitted for this particular application. Most of the athalassic saline and hypersaline lakes are located in arid and semiarid regions where water availability drives the hydrological dynamics of the lake itself and the associated ecosystems. This is the case of the Salada de Chiprana Lake, in the Ebro River basin (Spain). It is the only athalassic permanent hypersaline lake in Western Europe, and where rare and endangered bacterial mats exist. This work presents a robust hydrogeological conceptual model for the lake system. The model evaluates the contribution of groundwater discharge to the whole water budget and explains the hydrological behaviour of the lake system. The lake behaves as a flow-through system rather than a closed basin. About 40% of total water outflow from the lake occurs as groundwater, whereas evaporation accounts for the remaining 60%. The surface water inflows are variable, but the groundwater contribution seems almost constant, amounting to 13% of the average total water inflow and contributing 1.9% of salt income. The high water salinity of the lake is controlled by evaporation, by saline water inflows from irrigation return flows, and the by groundwater outflows. The role of groundwater should be taken into account when drafting the water and land planning, once the conditions for the conservation of the algal mats are defined. A major contribution of this study is the water balance in the Salada de Chiprana Lake, which is consistent with a robust hydrogeological conceptual model defined upon scarce hydrogeological, hydrochemical and isotopic data in the local context as conditioned by the regional behaviour. The water balance is a key tool to help to correctly manage this unique athalassic saline lake, and the approach used here can be extrapolated to other similar ecosystems around the world. • Brines chlorine calcium type have been identified in deep coastal boreholes in the Atacama Desert. • The combined application of lithium, boron and strontium isotopes has made it possible to recognize an ancient marine origin of deep brines. • The combined application of the isotopes δ11B and δ7Li allows an indirect approximation of the age of groundwater of marine origin to be made. This paper presents a multi-isotopic study to investigate the origin of saline groundwater in the Cordillera de la Costa, in the arid Atacama Desert region in northern Chile. Understanding the origin of deep saline groundwater can be challenging using only hydrogeochemical and common isotope methods. New 87Sr/86Sr, δ11B, δ7Li, and 234U/238U values of dissolved salts have been added to previously known chemical and isotopic compositions of groundwater, inorganic dissolved carbon, and sulfate. In this extremely arid area, the chemical and isotopic compositions of coastal springs primarily reflect the concentration of salts from atmospheric wet and dry deposition, which accumulate in the topsoil and dissolve during the occasional heavy rainfall events. These events recharge the aquifer with sodium-chloride type, high salinity water, with rock weathering contributing minimally to the chemical composition of groundwater. However, high salinity water of the calcium chloride and sodium-calcium chloride types in the deep fractured aquifer have a significantly different chemical and isotopic composition. In this investigation, it has been concluded that the salinity of these last waters is due to remnants of ancient marine water, mineral alteration and interaction with predominantly andesitic volcanic rocks in the Cordillera de la Costa. The deep saline groundwater has δ11B values between 17.3‰ and 20.7‰, and 87Sr/86Sr values below 0.706, suggesting mixing with recharge groundwater. The δ7Li composition of the deep groundwater varies between 23.5‰ and 31.5‰, pointing to a contribution of salts of marine origin and mineral alteration. However, the low Li concentrations relative to B in recharge water and in deep groundwater shows a preferential Li removal from pore water. Uranium and uranium isotopes data are limited to shallow groundwater due to the very low U concentrations in deep groundwater following reduction of U, and point to enhanced water–rock interaction in a rock-dominated environment. Climate change may have significant consequences for water resources availability and management at the basin scale. This is particularly true for areas already suffering from water stress, such as the Mediterranean area. This work focused on studying these impacts in the Llobregat basin supplying the Barcelona region. Several climate projections, adapted to the spatiotemporal resolution of the study, were combined with a daily hydrological model to estimate future water availability. Depending on the scenario and the time period, different assessment indicators such as reliability and resilience showed a future decrease in water resources (up to 40%), with drought periods becoming more frequent. An additional uncertainty analysis showed the high variability of the results (annual water availability ranging from 147 hm3/year to 274 hm3/year), thus making accurate projections difficult. The main aquifer of the Llobregat delta (Barcelona, Spain) has been affected by seawater intrusion since the 1960s. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) has sponsored the construction of a positive hydraulic barrier in order to stop the progress of seawater intrusion advance due to the intensive aquifer development. The hydraulic barrier consists of 15 wells into which highly treated reclaimed water from the waste water treatment plant of the Baix Llobregat is injected. Water is subjected, prior to the distribution to the injection wells, to secondary and tertiary treatments, and later to ultrafiltration, UV disinfection without chlorination, and salinity reduction through reverse osmosis. A preliminary pilot phase of the project was started in late 2007, with highly positive results, and the second phase started in mid 2010. Hydrogeological and hydrochemical monitoring data indicate an efficient performance and aquifer improvement. The evaluation of such efficiency and operational costs has been analyzed and discussed. The hydrogeological processes driving the hydrochemical composition of groundwater in the alpine pristine aquifer system of the Port del Comte Massif (PCM) are characterized through the multivariate statistical techniques Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) in the framework of Compositional Data (CoDa) analysis. Also, the groundwater Natural Background Levels (NBLs) for NO 3 and SO 4 and Cl are evaluated, which are specially important for indicating the occurrence of groundwater contamination derived from the anthropic activities conducted in the PCM. The different hydrogeochemical facies found in the aquifer system of the PCM comprises low mineralized Ca-HCO 3 water for the main Eocene karst aquifer, and Ca-SO 4 and highly mineralized Na Cl water types in the minor aquifers discharging from the PCM. The NBL values of SO 4 , Cl and NO 3 obtained for the main karst aquifer are 14.33, 4.06 and 6.55 mg/L, respectively. These values are 35, 3 and 1.2 times lower than the respective official NBLs values that were determined by the water administration to be compared with in the case of conducting a pollution assessment characterization in the main karst aquifer. Official overestimation of NBLs can put important groundwater resources in the PCM at risk. Time series of environmental tracers (groundwater stable isotope composition, electrical conductivity and temperature) and concentration breakthrough curves of artificial tracers (uranine, eosine, amino-G and naphtionate) have been analyzed to characterize fast preferential and slow matrix in-transit recharge flows in the Paleocene-Eocene limestone aquifer of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, an alpine karst system drained by a water table cave, a rare hydrological feature in high mountain karst systems with similar characteristics. Snowmelt favors the areal recharge of the system. This process is reflected in the large proportion of groundwater flowing through the connected porosity structure of the karst aquifer, which amounts the 75% of the total system water discharge. From the perspective of water resources recovery, the water capacity of the fissured-porous zone (matrix) represents 99% of the total karst system storage. The volume associated to the karst conduits is very small. The estimated mean travel times are 9 days for conduits and 475 days for connected porosity. These short travel times reveal high vulnerability of the karst system to pollutants in broad sense and a great impact of climate change on the associated water resources.
