Different weather conditions are known to affect bird migration, yet the influence of fog and low clouds on migrating birds has been rarely examined so far, and hence, their impact on bird movement is not well understood. Fog avoidance could be a consequence of visual limitations within the fog or may be the outcome of deteriorated soaring conditions due to the obstruction of the sun. We carried out a radar study at the Strait of Messina, which is a bottleneck for migrating birds traversing the Central Mediterranean Sea, to determine if the intensity of diurnal soaring bird migration was influenced by fog and other weather variables. We recorded bird movements using an X-band radar, which can detect birds flying within the fog, and recorded weather conditions using local meteorological observations. We examined if bird passage rate (number of tracks/hour) at the radar site was influenced by fog, wind speed and direction, air temperature and the time of day. Our findings suggest that fog was the most important factor affecting bird migration intensity as recorded by the radar, indicating that birds actively avoided flying into fog. In addition, wind direction affected bird migration intensity, with lower numbers recorded with southerly tailwinds and higher numbers recorded with westerly crosswinds. Our findings highlight a consequence of widespread meteorological conditions, and of fog in particular, on migrating birds, with implications for bird migration navigation, path length and flight energetics. Homing pigeons (Columba livia) are believed to adopt a map-and-compass strategy to find their way home. Surprisingly, to date a clear demonstration of the use of a cognitive map in free-flight experiments is missing. In this study, we investigated whether homing pigeons use a mental map in which - at an unknown release site - their own position, the home loft and a food loft are represented simultaneously. In order to test this, homing pigeons were trained to fly to a 25-30km distant food loft. A total of 131 hungry and satiated pigeons were then released from an unfamiliar site equidistant from the food loft and the home loft. Their vanishing bearings and homing times were assessed conventionally at four sites, and also their flight tracks from one release site by means of GPS loggers. The vanishing bearings of fed and hungry birds differed significantly at all release sites and a highly significant proportion of hungry birds flew to the food loft, while the fed birds headed home. The GPS experiment revealed a number of pigeons flying very precisely to the food loft, others correcting their flight direction after topography-induced detours. This implies that the pigeons knew their geographical position in relation to the targets, and chose a flight direction according to their locally manipulated needs - clearly the essence of a cognitive navigational map. Abstract: Carotenoid-based skin colorations vary seasonally in many bird species and are thought to be honest sexually selected signals. In order to provide more insight in the potential signal function and underlying mechanisms of such colorations we here quantified patterns of variation of leg coloration in adult male and female Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus tinnunculus) over the breeding season, and evaluated the relationship between coloration and levels of carotenoids, androgens and estrogens, oxidative damage and plasma non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity. We studied both reproducing wild and non-reproducing captive birds to test for the effect of diet and breeding effort. Males were more colored than females only during mating, and independently of diet, suggesting that leg-color is a sexually selected trait. Seasonal variation in leg color was associated with circulating carotenoids, but concentrations of these molecules were not related to antioxidant capacity, body condition or oxidative damage. These results indicate that carotenoid-based colorations may not be an honest signal of health status in this species. Production of carotenoid rich eggs coincided with low levels of circulating carotenoids in females, indicating that carotenoids might be a limited resource for laying female kestrels. Finally, young rearing males had higher levels of oxidative damage than females, and wild birds of both sexes had higher levels of these parameters than captive birds. These results may indicate that parental effort and physical activity are costly, independently from hormonal status. Since androgens did not explain carotenoid variation we suggest that multiple interacting factors can regulate carotenoid levels along the season. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The behaviour and ecology of seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels and shearwaters have been the subject of numerous studies, often employing the most recent technologies to track birds during their foraging trips. Until now, however, large oceanic species have been preferred for tracking studies because of the dimensions and weight of the devices available. New light-weight GPS (Global Positioning System) loggers (< 9 g) were used to track foraging trips of a medium-sized species, the Cory's shearwater, for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea. The tracks obtained showed that Mediterranean Cory's shearwaters alternatively used one of two different fishing areas. Various explanations could account for this difference; one of these could be that the two directions have a different relevance for the birds, being for chick- and self-provisioning. This study provides new hypotheses concerning the behaviour of Cory's shearwaters in the Mediterranean Sea, a different environment compared to previously studied oceans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical correlates and risk profile of prediabetes (fasting plasma glucose (FPG) values in the upper normal limits but below the diabetic threshold) in hypertension, an insulin-resistant, prodiabetogenic condition, are scarcely known. For this reason, we evaluated 982 non-diabetic (FPG,<126 mg 100 ml−1 and no antidiabetic treatment) referred hypertensive patients without a history of cardiovascular disease grouped by mild (100–109 mg 100 ml−1) and advanced (110–125 mg 100 ml−1) dysglycaemia compared with normal FPG (<100 mg 100 ml−1). FPG, total and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides and total white blood cell count were assessed by standard methodologies; 10-year predicted coronary heart disease (CHD) risk was approximated by the Framingham risk score (FRS). Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was diagnosed by standard categorical criteria using either 110 or 100 mg 100 ml−1 as a threshold for impaired fasting glucose (IFG). FPG was above 110 in 13% and between 100 and 109 in 20% of patients. In both dysglycaemic groups, perturbed glucose homeostasis was associated with abnormally high fasting triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, obesity, worse CHD risk profile and higher white blood cell count. MetS was highly prevalent and its distribution pattern was markedly influenced by the definitions of IFG based on different FPG cutoffs. Thus, even mildly perturbed glucose homeostasis associates with atherogenic dyslipidaemia, obesity and adverse risk profile in non-diabetic hypertensive patients. Rather unique amongst the prognostic predictors, microalbuminuria (MA, albuminuria: 15–200 μg min-1 ) is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). The relationship, usually assumed to reflect an increased blood pressure (BP) load on the heart and the kidney, may, however, represent more than a haemodynamic correlate. Methods. To evaluate this possibility, we related MA to left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and other functional and structural echocardiographic parameters, office and 24-h BP, weight, lipids and smoking status in 330 never treated nondiabetic hypertensive men. Results. The risk of MA increased linearly by ascending quartiles of LVMI and was 2.3-fold higher in the presence of LVH after adjustment for age, left atrial size, mean fractional shortening. Systolic BP, either office or 24 h, and smoking status were the only additional independent predictors in multivariate logistic regression models. The BP-adjusted risk of MA was about twofold higher in patients with LVH, either concentric or eccentric, and neutral in those with concentric remodelling compared with normal geometry. Conclusions. The association between elevated LVMI and MA independent of several other potential confounders, systolic BP in particular, is consistent with the existence of cardiac albuminuric factors, possibly of hormonal nature, which are to be identified more precisely. Subclinical increases in albuminuria (microalbuminuria) predict morbid events, but the reasons for that are still not understood in full. This paper reviews the existing evidence regarding the relationships of non-diabetic microalbuminuria and cardiovascular disease, the underlying assumption being that endothelial dysfunction contributes both to atherosclerotic macrovascular disease and renal microvascular disease of which albuminuria is a marker. Much data support that concept, and suggest a preferential link with endothelial activation in response to acute and subclinical inflammatory stimulation, although further studies are needed to establish the exact cause–effect mechanisms. Epidemiological studies also show associations with cardiovascular events, and some recent prospective results also indicate the power of micro-albuminuria to predict risk independently from conventional atherogenic factors. Thus, micro-albuminuria might be considered as an integrated marker of cardiovascular risk sensitive to systemic vascular status in addition to other parameters such as blood pressure levels, glucose metabolism, smoking habits, a profile rather unique among the prognostic predictors available to stratify risk in hypertensive patients. Treatment with calcium channel blocker (CCB)s, dihydropyridines and others, is frequently complicated by dependent oedema in the absence of sodium retention or cardiac failure, a bothersome side effect of unclear aetiology. The present paper reviews our own and other work dealing with the antagonism exerted by such drugs on postural vasoconstriction, a mechanism triggered by limb venous congestion during orthostasis and controlled through a local sympathetic axo-axonic reflex and increased myogenic tone in response to changes in transmural pressure. By stabilising capillary pressure, postural vasoconstriction counteracts fluid hyperfiltration consequent to gravitational stimuli, and consistent evidence shows attenuation of this response by L-type calcium channel blockers. Interference with the postural reflex control of skin blood flow may therefore contribute to dependent oedema, although cannot entirely explain its development. Attenuation of postural vasoconstriction may amplify the fluid hyperfiltration induced by CCBs through other mechanisms, such as imbalanced intracapillary pressure or enhanced vascular permeability, which are the main factors determining net fluid filtration into the interstitial compartment. Background: The reasons why microalbuminuria (albuminuria &ges;15 μg/min), an expression of a renal microcirculatory abnormality, predicts cardiovascular disease in essential hypertension are unsettled. To test the hypothesis that microalbuminuria represents a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, we evaluated its association with common carotid artery (CCA) intima media thickness (IMT), a measure of preclinical atherosclerosis and an independent predictor of cardiac and cerebrovascular events, in uncomplicated essential hypertensive individuals. Materials and methods: Albuminuria, ultrasonographic CCA IMT (the mean of six bilateral far wall measurements within 1.5 cm proximally to the flow divider), brachial blood pressure (BP), smoking habits and lipids were evaluated in 136 stage 1-3 untreated essential hypertensive men free of cardiovascular disease. Results: CCA IMT did not differ between normo- (n = 99) and microalbuminuric (n = 37) patients. The correlation between CCA IMT and albuminuria was not significant, and the prevalence of microalbuminuria across IMT quartiles was not different. Microalbuminuric patients showed higher systolic BP and that parameter was the only independent correlate in a multivariate logistic regression model including also age, CCA IMT, diastolic BP, lipids and smoking habits as independent variables and microalbuminuria as the dependent one. Conclusion: This cross-sectional study in hypertensive subjects free of cardiovascular disease has shown a dissociation between microalbuminuria and CCA IMT, a surrogate measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, and a parameter linearly related to cardiovascular events. The data do not support the theory of microalbuminuria as a surrogate measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, while confirming the importance of systolic BP levels as an independent correlate of increased albuminuria in essential hypertension. To better understand the links between circulating insulin and albuminuria in essential hypertension, the plasma insulin response to a 75 gram glucose load and albuminuria were evaluated in 53 glucose-tolerant essential hypertensives and 12 controls. To allow any direct pressure-independent albuminuric effect of insulin to emerge more clearly, those same parameters were also evaluated in 20 glucose-tolerant normotensive patients with stable atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease, a condition in which hyperinsulinaemia could be anticipated on the basis of previous reports. In response to glucose ingestion, hyperinsulinaemia was evident in both hypertensive and normotensive atherosclerotic patients, while, on average, urine albumin was elevated only in the former. When plasma insulin, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) (by 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring), plasma glucose, triglycerides and body mass index were entered into a multiple regression analysis, only systolic BP appeared to exert an independent effect on urine albumin. Post-glucose load plasma insulin did not differ between hypertensive patients with (n = 14) and without (n = 39) microalbuminuria (albuminuria >20 μg/min). In further analyses, insulin and systolic BP values were divided in quartiles: albuminuria did not differ across insulin quartiles, while it was significantly higher in the top (n = 21) vs the bottom (n = 21) systolic BP quartile. Thus, hyperinsulinaemia and microalbuminuria were unrelated variables in these hypertensive and atherosclerotic patients. Earthworms Esinia spp. were kept for a 48-h period in artificial soil contaminated with a sublethal dose of dimethoate, an organophosphate pesticide. Different groups of common shrews, Sorex araneus, were fed earthworms that had been exposed to contaminated soil either 1, 5,or 10 d previously. Cholinesterase (ChE) activity was measured in worms and in the shrews before and after they were fed contaminated worms. After exposure to dimethoate-treated soil, ChE activity in worms was inhibited by 90%. Recovery was slow, and ChE activity was still markedly inhibited (35% of the control level) 40 d after exposure. Whole blood ChE activity in shrews was significantly depressed (64% of preexposure levels) when animals were fed worms that had been exposed to dimethoate-treated soil on the previous day. The behavioral and physiological effects of exposure to dimethoate, an organophosphate (OP) pesticide, were examined in common shrews, Sorex araneus, under laboratory conditions. Shrews were given either saline or an acute sublethal dose (50 mg/kg intraperitoneal) of dimethoate, and a time course of behavior was recorded in five 10-min open field tests spaced over a 12-h period. Parallel measurements of brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were carried out to monitor the onset of brain AChE inhibition and its subsequent recovery. Dimethoate produced a significant depression of locomotor activity for approx.6 h. Rearing, exploring, and sniffing activities were also significantly inhibited. The observed behavioral effects coincided with the maximal inhibition of AChE and disappeared before the brain AChE level had recovered. Statistically significant correlations were observed between the reduced frequencies of exploring, rearing, and crossings (a measure of locomotor activity) and the severity of inhibition of brain AChE activity, suggesting that brain AChE activity, the biomaker of exposure, could be used as a predictor of the severity of OP-induced effects on behavior. Penguins are highly specialized divers that are expected to reflect environmental variation by adjusting their foraging behavior. We performed a comprehensive analysis of the at-sea distribution, diving, and foraging performance of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) during the early chick-rearing period over two consecutive breeding seasons. The study was conducted at Cabo dos Bahías, (44° 54′ 50″ S; 65° 32′ 37″ W) a breeding colony located south of the latitudinal range of penguins' main prey item Argentine anchovies (Engraulis anchoita). We also linked penguin foraging behavior to sea surface temperature (SST) to examine how birds cope with differences in oceanographic conditions. For this, we instrumented 37 adult penguins (18 in 2015 and 19 in 2016) with data loggers. In addition, we recorded chick growth in body mass during the first 12 days of life. Overall, the diving patterns of adult Magellanic penguins were similar in both breeding seasons. However, during 2015, adult breeders spent more time at the sea surface between foraging dives and performed more foraging dives per hour. The time spent foraging was higher in 2016 than in 2015. Foraging penguins also expanded their foraging range more than 100 km during 2016. Temperature records gathered by diving penguins during 2016 showed significantly higher temperatures, both at the sea surface as well as at the bottom of dives. Adults performed a higher foraging effort and chicks gained weight faster during 2016. Site-specific variability in prey distribution and abundance may be responsible for inter-seasonal discrepancies in the foraging and diving patterns. We reasoned that any environmental change could cause a shift in the distribution of anchovies, which would change the foraging behavior of penguins as they attempted to optimize their chick growth. Changes in local weather conditions may affect reproduction in birds. In this study, we evaluated how changes in both local weather and winter North Atlantic Oscillation (the NAO, an index of non-local climatic conditions) could explain variation in selected reproductive traits (laying date, clutch size, hatching and fledging success) in Mediterranean kestrels Falco tinnunculus over 10 years. Kestrels (1) delayed the laying date in rainier springs; (2) laid smaller clutches after warmer and rainier winters, independently from the laying date; (3) had higher hatching success after warmer and dry winters and in warmer and rainier springs; (4) had higher fledging success in warmer and rainier springs. Thus, changes in the weather and the winter NAO index affected reproductive decisions and reproductive success. Predicting the long-term effects of global warming on the viability of Mediterranean populations of kestrels and other birds of prey is difficult. Whether the reproduction of birds of prey will be positively or negatively affected by global warming will depend on the relative importance of changes in temperature and rainfall. Continuous exposure to ozone (O3, 1.2 ppm) in adult CD-1 male mice for 20 consecutive days markedly influenced a number of items of aggressive behavior induced by 59 days of individual housing. The behavior of mice was videotaped on days 1, 3, and 5 of five consecutive daily encounters (10 min each; isolation days 55, 57, and 59). Ozone exposure caused an abatement of aggressive behavior and enhanced fear-associated displays shown by a significant decrease in the frequency of attacking and digging and an increase in freezing. Moreover, O3 induced a decrease or time spent in attacking and exploration/activity. Nonexposed animals exhibited a day-dependent increase in self-grooming frequency which was not observed in O3 mice; by contrast, freezing was higher m O3 mice on day 5 of the lest. Data suggest that O3 exposure produces a remarkable reduction of mouse aggression, indirectly confirming previous findings on physical and neurobehavioral effects of O3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data on collisions of birds with high-voltage electric power lines are scarce and are often gathered without protocols for the correction of carcass disappearance. There is actually growing awareness that it is important to accomplish carcass removal trials in order to develop correction factors for producing adjusted estimates of mortality due to collisions. In this study, we provided for the first time raw counts and estimates of bird collisions across seven Italian areas that largely differ in their habitats. We also carried out carcass removal trials to compute the rate of carcass disappearance and produce better estimates of collision events and of optimal time intervals of carcass searches. Results of 1-year monitoring showed a general low frequency of birds collided with the power lines. Carcass removal trials showed effects of carcass size and season on the carcass disappearance, which varied largely among the study areas. In four areas, both small and large carcasses had more than 50% probability to be removed within 3-5 days from their distribution. Given the high variation among study areas, we suggest that estimates of carcass persistence and optimal time intervals should be conducted concurrently for each new study site. Habitat characteristics determine the presence and distribution of trophic resources shaping seabirds' behavioural responses which may result in physiological consequences. Such physiological consequences in relation to foraging strategies of different life-history stages have been little studied in the wild. Thus, we aim to assess differences in oxidative status, condition (fat stores, i.e. triglyceride levels, TRI), stress (Heterophil/Lymphocyte (H/L) ratio), and leukocyte profiles between incubation and chick rearing highlighting the role of foraging strategies in a seabird (Calonectris diomedea). Chick rearing was more energetically demanding and stressful than incubation as demonstrated by high stress levels (H/L ratio and leukocytes) and lower body stores (assessed by TRI and the increment of weight) due to the high energy requirements of rearing chicks. Also, our results make reconsider the simplistic trade-off model where reproduction increases metabolism and consequently the rate of oxidative stress. In fact, high energy expenditure (VeDBA) during chick rearing was correlated with low levels of oxidative damage likely due to mechanisms at the level of mitochondrial inner membranes (uncoupling proteins or low levels of oxygen partial pressure). Further (more distant) and longer (more days) foraging trips were performed during incubation, when antioxidants showed low levels compared to chick rearing due to incubation fasting, a change in diet, or a combination of these factors; but unlikely because of oxidative shielding since no relation was found between oxidative damage and antioxidant capacity. Males showed higher numbers of monocytes which were positively correlated with antioxidant capacity compared to females, suggesting sexual differences in immune profiles. BC1 RNA is a small non-messenger RNA common in dendritic microdomains of neurons in rodents. In order to investigate its possible role in learning and behaviour, we compared controls and knockout mice from three independent founder lines established from separate embryonic stem cells. Mutant mice were healthy with normal brain morphology and appeared to have no neurological deficits. A series of tests for exploration and spatial memory was carried out in three different laboratories. The tests were chosen as to ensure that different aspects of spatial memory and exploration could be separated and that possible effects of confounding variables could be minimised. Exploration was studied in a barrier test, in an open-field test, and in an elevated plus-maze test. Spatial memory was investigated in a Barnes maze and in a Morris water maze (memory for a single location), in a multiple T-maze and in a complex alley maze (route learning), and in a radial maze (working memory). In addition to these laboratory tasks, exploratory behaviour and spatial memory were assessed under semi-naturalistic conditions in a large outdoor pen. The combined results indicate that BC1 RNA-deficient animals show behavioural changes best interpreted in terms of reduced exploration and increased anxiety. In contrast, spatial memory was not affected. In the outdoor pen, the survival rates of BC1-depleted mice were lower than in controls. Thus, we conclude that the neuron-specific non-messenger BC1 RNA contributes to the aptive modulation of behaviour. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The study was carried out in two different models of left ventricular hypertrophy: athlete's heart and essential arterial hypertension. Three groups of strictly age-matched males were studied: one group of 10 young adult untreated essential hypertensive patients (H), a second group of 10 athletes (A), and a group of 10 healthy individuals as controls (C). A Sonos 5500 echograph with S4 harmonic transducer was used with Levovist (ultrasonic tracer) before and after dipyridamole injection; digitised images of quantitative myocardial contrast echocardiography were collected with Power Harmonic Doppler. Angio images were analysed using dedicated PC software by placing a region-of-interest on the septum. Peak intensity, half-time (HT), the area under the curve of appearance and disappearance of microbubbles at 2/3 of PI, both in absolute and indexed values (/LVMi), were sampled. The per cent increase of PI after dipyridamole was significantly higher in C (+73%, P<0.01) than in H (+31%) and in A (+33%) (P<0.05). The area of appearance was significantly lower in H in comparison with C and A, both at rest and after vasodilatation. The disappearance area after dipyridamole was signifi-cantly higher in C and in A (+124%) than in H (+104%) (P<0.05). Some hypothesis could be made: an impairment in the coronary microcirculatory function in hypertensive patients could be because of an in-crease in the arteriolar resistance. Background: The evaluation of the systolic left ventricular performance in hypertensive patients presents some problems related to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) which alters the ventricular geometry. The videodensitometric textural ultrasonic analysis of hypertensive myocardium has provided evidence of impairment in the cyclic variation of the mean gray level. This might be considered as an index of intrinsic myocardial function. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to analyse the connection between the midwall fractional shortening and end-systolic stress. The ultrasonic textural parameters in hypertensive patients, arranged in different groups according to the level of LVH and relative wall thickness, were also evaluated. Methods: A group of age-matched (58 ± 7 years) male essential hypertensive patients (n = 70) were compared to a group of normotensive and healthy subjects used as controls (n = 32). All subjects performed a conventional 2D-Doppler echocardiography to analyse the left ventricular performance. A quantitative analysis of the echocardiographic digitised imaging was also carried out with the help of a calibrated digitisation system in order to calculate the septum and the posterior wall textural parameters. The myocardial mean gray level was calculated to derive the cyclic variation index (CVI). Results: When subjected to a higher meridional end-systolic stress, the hypertensive patients showed a significantly lower midwall fractional shortening than the control patients. The CVI was also significantly lower in the hypertensives group, both for the septum wall (-16.3 ± 22.8 vs 34.7 ± 15.3%; P < 0.001) and the posterior wall (-5.2 ± 23.6 vs 38.2 ± 15.4%; P < 0.001). A significant correlation was found between the midwall fractional shortening (MFS) and the textural parameters, and between these two variables and the end-systolic stress. Purpose: Plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 are increased in obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Their correlation with insulin levels supports the hypothesis that hypofibrinolysis may affect the development of atherosclerotic complications in patients with insulin resistance. To investigate the effect of insulin on fibrinolysis, we evaluated levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) antigens during insulin infusion in the forearm vascular beds of 8 healthy subjects.Materials and Methods: Insulin was infused in the brachial artery of each subject to raise local venous concentrations to approximately 100 microU/mL. Blood samples were obtained from the brachial artery and vein at baseline, after 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes of infusion, and 30 minutes after the end of the infusion.Results: Following intra-arterial infusion of insulin, forearm blood flow (mean +/- SD) increased progressively from 2.7 +/- 0.6 to 4.0 +/- 0.6 mL/dL/min (P <0.01) and did not return to baseline after the end of the infusion. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 balance increased (345 +/- 160 versus 8 +/- 152 fmol/dL/min, P <0.02) at 60 minutes, reaching baseline levels after the end of the infusion. After 90 minutes, tPA balance increased (40 +/- 26 versus 7 +/- 29 fmol/dL/min, P <0.01) with a profile similar to forearm blood flow.Conclusions: Local hyperinsulinemia induces regional vasodilation and expression of PAI-1 and tPA antigens.
