Objectives: To investigate the survival rates and fracture resistance of dentures made from different teeth (milled, 3D-printed, fabricated), bases (milled, 3D-printed, pressed) and bonding combinations. Materials and methods: Specimens (11 groups, n = 8 per group) were fabricated from combinations with a denture tooth (anterior tooth 21) and a denture base material. The groups consisted of combinations of teeth (6x), denture base materials (5x) and adhesive bonding options (4x). The teeth were printed, milled or prefabricated. The denture base was produced conventionally or was milled or 3D-printed. Two dentures were milled from one industrially produced block. The dentures were subjected to thermal and mechanical loading (TCML) and subsequent fracture test. Statistics: ANOVA, Bonferroni-test, Kaplan-Meier survival, Pearson correlation; α = 0.05. Results: Mean loading cycles varied between 221,869 (8), 367,610 (11), 513,616 (6) 875,371 (3) and 9,000,030 (4). ANOVA revealed significant (p ≤ 0.001) different surviving cycles. Log Rank test showed significantly (p < 0.001) different loading cycles. Fracture force after TCML varied between 129.8 +/- 97.1 N (3) and 780.8 +/- 62.5 N (9). ANOVA comparison revealed significant (p < 0.001) different fracture loadings between the individual systems. Correlation was found between fracture force and loading cycles (0.587, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Different survival rates and fracture forces were found for dentures made of different teeth (milled, 3D-printed, prefabricated), bases (milled, 3D-printed, pressed) and bonding combinations. Milled, pressed and prefabricated systems provided longer survival and fracture force than the other tested systems. Background: Ingested dental prosthesis are susceptible to impaction in the gastrointestinal tract due to their sharp edges, size and contour. Delays in presentation arise from the lack of clear history of ingestion and misdiagnosis occurs due to the radiolucency of denture material on plain radiography. An acquired, non-malignant tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) may develop from a chronically impacted denture. Surgical management of a TOF secondary to denture is a challenging clinical problem that is rarely reported in the literature and no previous case reports have described the two-staged reconstruction approach that we present here. Case presentation: We report a case of a male in his early 60s who presented to an acute general hospital with symptoms ongoing for over one year of dysphagia, recurrent chest infections and weight loss. Barium swallow and computed tomography identified an ingested dental prosthesis (denture) that had caused a TOF. He was transferred to our specialist thoracic surgery unit where an attempt to remove the foreign body endoscopically was abandoned due to firm impaction and risk of further injury. The subsequent multi-disciplinary management of this complex case required a two-staged reconstruction approach. The first procedure involved extracting the foreign body, repairing the underlying defects with tracheal resection and anastomosis, and creating an oesophageal diversion with cervical oesophagostomy. The second procedure achieved continuity of the gastrointestinal tract with gastric pull-up and pharyngo-gastric anastomosis. Following rehabilitation, the patient was discharged on oral intake alongside percutaneous jejunostomy feeding. Conclusions: Early recognition and removal of impacted dental prosthesis is essential to prevent morbidity and mortality. Delayed diagnosis can lead to acquired TOF with associated consequences such as recurrent pulmonary infection, mediastinitis and nutritional deficit. Challenges we encountered, such as failed attempts at endoscopic retrieval and the difficult dissection of fibrotic tissue, were directly due to the delayed identification of the denture. We highlight the importance of holding a high index of clinical suspicion of foreign body ingestion in dental prosthesis wearers who present with recurrent chest infections and ongoing dysphagia. Background: Differences in the effects of cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners remain unclear. Objective: This cross‐sectional study aimed to clarify the differences in the oral‐hygiene status and masticatory performance between participants using cream‐type denture adhesives and those using home liners. Methods: Masticatory performance with and without cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners was evaluated using colour‐changeable chewing gum. Oral hygiene was assessed using the tongue coating index (TCI). Propensity‐score matching was performed using oral moisture, presence of palatal or mandibular protuberances, type of residual ridge, denture type (complete or partial denture), and denture retention as background factors. Wilcoxon signed‐rank test was used to examine the differences in masticatory performance with and without cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners and differences in masticatory performance and TCI between the cream‐type denture adhesive and home‐liner groups. Results: This study included 38 and 40 cream‐type adhesive and home‐liner users, respectively, and 17 pairs were obtained after propensity‐score matching. The Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed that masticatory performance was significantly different with and without the use of home liners, and higher values were obtained with the use of home‐liners. However, the cream‐type denture adhesive and home‐liner groups showed no significant differences in terms of the change in masticatory performance with the use of them. Furthermore, Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed that TCI values were significantly high in the cream‐type adhesive group. Conclusion: The findings in this study suggest that home liners improve masticatory performance and that participants regularly using cream‐type denture adhesives have poorer oral hygiene. ABSTRACT Objectives Methods Results Conclusion To analyse different background factors that may serve as predictors for acquiring symptoms of severe COVID‐19 disease.A postal questionnaire was sent to the total population of individuals born between 1942 (80 years, n = 6299) and 1932 (90 years, n = 1904) living in the Örebro and Östergötland counties, Sweden, in 2017 and repeated in 2022. Tentative predictive factors for self‐reported severe COVID‐19 disease were based on the responses from the 2017 questionnaire related to general and oral health and prior to the outbreak of the COVID‐19 pandemic.Response rate to the main questionnaire in 2022 was 66% (5375/8203), and 577 reported having been sick with COVID‐19 out of which 359 agreed to answer a separate questionnaire on COVID‐19. This questionnaire was returned by 278/359 of the participants corresponding to a response rate of 77%. Information gleaned from the 2017 pre‐COVID‐19 survey revealed a relatively large number of associations between severity of subsequently self‐reported COVID‐19 disease and several diverse tentative related factors found in unadjusted regression analyses. Based on statistically significant correlations in the adjusted regression analysis, significant predictive factors (based on self‐reports from 2017) for contracting severe COVID‐19 were in decreasing order of odds ratios (OR): reported removable partial or complete denture usage (OR 6.2, CI 2.2–17.2); reported periodontal problems in the past year (OR 3.4, CI 1.1–10.4); and reported daytime dry mouth (OR 2.5, CI 1.2–5.2).Removable dentures, periodontal problems and daytime dry mouth were predictors for developing symptoms of severe COVID‐19 disease. This review aimed to investigate the literature systematically and answer the question "Does the processing method of organic and inorganic agents incorporated into PMMA influence antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity?". This systematic review was registered in the OpenScience Framework (osf.io/7nc28) and PRISMA guidelines were followed. The study design (PICOS) framework applied was P = polymethylmethacrylate; I = incorporation of organic and inorganic antimicrobials; C = control group; O = antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity; and S = experimental in vitro studies. A custom search strategy was performed in Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Science Direct databases. Studies were selected according to eligibility criteria in two steps. The risk of bias was evaluated by Joanna Briggs Institute's quasi-experimental studies tool. A qualitative analysis of the data was performed addressing: incorporation and polymerization methods, antimicrobial activity, and cytotoxicity of organic and inorganic agents added into PMMA. From a total of 1959 results, 34 studies were included in this review. The 3 organic agents evaluated showed antimicrobial efficacy and 1 was cytotoxic. Of the 31 inorganics, 4 showed no antimicrobial activity, and 8 reduced cell viability. Processing methods influenced the results. The incorporation of organic and inorganic antimicrobial agents into PMMA, depending on the processing method, changes the antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity of the modified material. The control of Candida albicans biofilm formation on dentures made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an important challenge due to the high resistance to antifungal drugs. Interestingly, the natural compounds undecylenic acid (UDA) and farnesol (FAR) both prevent C. albicans biofilm formation and could have a synergetic effect. We therefore modified PMMA with a combination of UDA and FAR (UDA+FAR), aiming to obtain the antifungal PMMA_UDA+FAR composites. Equal concentrations of FAR and UDA were added to PMMA to reach 3%, 6%, and 9% in total of both compounds in composites. The physico-chemical properties of the composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurement. The antifungal activity of the composites was tested on both biofilm and planktonic cells with an XTT test 0 and 6 days after the composites' preparation. The effect of the UDA+FAR combination on C. albicans filamentation was studied in agar containing 0.0125% and 0.4% UDA+FAR after 24 h and 48 h of incubation. The results showed the presence of UDA and FAR on the composite and decreases in the water contact angle and metabolic activity of both the biofilm and planktonic cells at both time points at non-toxic UDA+FAR concentrations. Thus, the modification of PMMA with a combination of UDA+FAR reduces C. albicans biofilm formation on dentures and could be a promising anti-Candida strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Opiorphin is a pentapeptide secreted in saliva and has a strong analgesic effect. Salivary opiorphin has been shown to increase in orofacial pain and may act as a pain reliever in pain caused by denture‐related ulcers. The current study aimed to evaluate the salivary opiorphin levels in traumatic ulcers caused by ill‐fitting dentures and demonstrate whether there is any correlation between trauma‐related pain levels and salivary opiorphin levels. Materials and Methods: Twenty‐two individuals with new full dentures and a complaint of pain due to ill‐fitting were included in this study. Patients were asked to rate their level of pain on a visual analog scale (VAS). Then, saliva specimens were collected at the first visit with the complaint of pain and 7 days following the denture adjustment. Results: The average saliva opiorphin level before and after denture adjustment were 19.29 ± 5.44 and 15.78 ± 3.95 ng/mL, respectively. A dependent (paired) t‐test determined that the mean salivary opiorphin level differed statistically significantly before and after the adjustment of the dentures. Conclusions: The findings show that salivary opiorphin levels increase in pain associated with denture‐related traumatic ulcers. Objectives: Evaluate the efficacy of denture cleaners on the adhesion of Candida albicans and their effects on the surface, optical, and mechanical properties of resins for conventional, milled, and 3D-printed denture bases. Materials and methods: A total of 240 resin samples were made, 120 for testing Candida albicans adhesion, optical stabilities (ΔE00), roughness (Ra), hydrophilicity (°), surface free energy (Owens-Wendt) and 120 samples for testing Candida albicans adhesion, surface microhardness (Knoop), flexural strength and modulus of elasticity in a three-point test, in which they were divided into 3 groups of denture resin (n = 40) and subdivided into 5 cleaners of dentures (n = 8). Data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test for multiple comparisons (α = 0.05). Results: Denture cleaners with an alkaline solution and dilute acid composition were those that showed the greatest effectiveness in reducing Candida albicans (P < 0.001), however 1% NaOCl significantly affected the properties of the resins (P < 0.05). Denture 3D-printed showed that the surface microhardness was significantly lower for all cleansers (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Listerine demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing Candida albicans with minimal effect on denture properties, whereas 1% NaOCl had a significant negative impact on the properties. The mechanical properties were significantly lower in 3D-printed resin than in other resins for all denture cleansers. Clinical relevance: Denture base materials are being sold to adapt to the CAD/CAM system, increasing the number of users of dentures manufactured with this system. Despite this, there is little investigation into denture cleaners regarding the adhesion capacity of microorganisms and the optical, surface and mechanical properties of dentures, thus requiring further investigation. Objective: Previous studies focused on the benefits of adequate prosthodontic treatment, while few studies have investigated the prosthodontic‐related risks to health. As a modifiable oral health indicator, the association of ill‐fitting prosthesis (IFP) with hypertension has not been fully explored. Methods: This cross‐sectional study involved 158,659 adults in Beijing (2009–2017) receiving intra‐oral examinations and blood pressure measurements. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of IFP with the prevalence of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≧ 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≧ 90 mmHg, as well as subgroup analyses by different fixed IFP subgroups (according to involved teeth number) and removable IFP subgroup. We further investigated effect modifications among stratified populations. Results: 158,659 individuals were included for analysis, 346 (26.86%) in IFP group and 27,380 (17.40%) in non‐IFP group (p < 0.001) were hypertensive. After adjustment of sex, age, obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, hsCRP, family history of CVD, self‐reported smoking, self‐reported drinking and WC, ORs of hypertension, SBP ≧ 140 mmHg and DBP ≧ 90 mmHg were 1.330 (95% CI: 1.162–1.522), 1.277 (95% CI: 1.098–1.486) and 1.376 (95% CI: 1.186–1.596), respectively (p < 0.05). Furthermore, after full adjustment, the number of involved teeth showed a significant incremental trend with hypertension risk in the population with and without IFP (p for trend <0.001). The IFP–blood pressure associations were more pronounced in females, 18–60 years, non‐obese and diabetic participants. This prospective clinical study aimed to assess self-reported orofacial esthetics, chewing function, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) over three years in the Kennedy Class I patients without posterior dentition who received free-end saddle removable partial dentures (RPDs) retained by two mini dental implants (MDIs) inserted in the canine/first premolar region. The study's robust findings reaffirm the viability of MDI-retained RPDs as a treatment modality in contemporary prosthodontics, instilling confidence in the dental community. Materials and methods: 92 participants with posterior edentulism in the maxilla or mandible received 184 MDIs and 92 RPDs. After one year, three participants were excluded, and another seven were excluded after three years. The final sample was 82 participants. Self-perceived orofacial esthetics was assessed by the Orofacial Esthetic Scale (OES), chewing function by the Chewing Function Questionnaire (CFQ), and the OHRQoL by the OHIP-14. Statistical analysis utilized multivariate regression analysis, standardized effect size calculation, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, and Friedman's test. Results: OHRQoL and chewing function significantly improved (p < 0.001) one month after MDI loading by the new RPDs and continued to improve over the observation period (p < 0.05). The OES also significantly improved (p < 0.001) and remained almost unchanged over the next three years (p = 0.440). Conclusion: Despite the limitations of this study, the MDI-retained RPD appears to be a viable treatment modality in contemporary prosthodontics from the patients’ perspective. Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are an indication for Kennedy Class IV planification. However, in long edentulous space, it becomes a biomechanical challenge, since it results in an anterior free end, in turn, and in lever movements. Such conditions can create a greater probability of bone loss, torque on abutment teeth and instability of the denture. In this sense, strategies to improve the biomechanical performance of RPDs are essential in planning. The objective of this clinical case is to report the prosthetic rehabilitation of a partially edentulous patient, IV Kennedy classification, with implant-assisted RPD. Patient was complaining that her RPD in the upper arch was unstable and, among the treatment plan options, the chosen one was rehabilitation with a RPD supported by the molars (16 and 17; 26 and 27) and two implants in the 13 and 23 regions. Finally, o-ring components were installed on the implants and captured. Rehabilitation resulted in a RPD with favorable retention, stability, and esthetics. It is concluded that this treatment option contributed to the resolution of a clinical challenge derived from the difficulties associated with a long edentulous space in the anterior region and provided the patient with an aesthetic and functional denture. For patients who have difficulty in mechanical cleaning of dental appliances, a denture cleaner that can remove biofilm with dense extracellular polymeric substances is needed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of diatom complex with active micro-locomotion for removing biofilms from 3D printed dentures. The diatom complex, which is made by doping MnO2 nanosheets on diatom biosilica, is mixed with H2O2 to generate fine air bubbles continuously. Denture base resin specimens were 3D printed in a roof shape, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (107 CFU/mL) was cultured on those for biofilm formation. Cleaning solutions of phosphate-buffered saline (negative control, NC), 3% H2O2 with peracetic acid (positive control, PC), denture cleanser tablet (DCT), 3% H2O2 with 2 mg/mL diatom complex M (Melosira, DM), 3% H2O2 with 2 mg/mL diatom complex A (Aulacoseira, DA), and DCT with 2 mg/mL DM were prepared and applied. To assess the efficacy of biofilm removal quantitatively, absorbance after cleaning was measured. To evaluate the stability of long-term use, surface roughness, ΔE, surface micro-hardness, and flexural strength of the 3D printed dentures were measured before and after cleaning. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows with one-way ANOVA, followed by Scheffe's test as a post hoc (p < 0.05). The group treated with 3% H2O2 with DA demonstrated the lowest absorbance value, followed by the groups treated with 3% H2O2 with DM, PC, DCT, DCT + DM, and finally NC. As a result of Scheffe's test to evaluate the significance of difference between the mean values of each group, statistically significant differences were shown in all groups based on the NC group. The DA and DM groups showed the largest mean difference though there was no significant difference between the two groups. Regarding the evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of the denture base resin, no statistically significant differences were observed before and after cleaning. In the cytotoxicity test, the relative cell count was over 70%, reflecting an absence of cytotoxicity. The diatom complex utilizing active micro-locomotion has effective biofilm removal ability and has a minimal effect in physical and mechanical properties of the substrate with no cytotoxicity. Objective: This study aimed to investigate changes in the surface characteristics of two denture resins when disinfected with a vinegar-hydrogen peroxide (VHP) mixture. Materials and Methods: Microwave-polymerized or 3D printed acrylic resin disks were immersed for 900 min (simulating 90 daily uses) in the following solutions (N = 10): water; 0.5% sodium hypochlorite; hydrogen peroxide and water dilution (1:1 ratio); vinegar and water dilution (1:1 ratio); and VHP mixture. Surface roughness, Knoop microhardness, surface free energy, and scanning electron microscopic images were assessed before and after the immersions. Results were compared using the 2-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey test, at 5% significance. Results: Surface roughness and microhardness did not differ (P >.05) among the solutions and times. Surface free energy and its dispersive component increased (P <.05) for all solutions. All solutions, except for water and VHP mixture, degraded microtopography. Conclusions: The VHP mixture was not deleterious to conventional and 3D-printed resin surfaces. Clinical relevance: Conventional and 3D printed resin dentures can be disinfected with a VHP mixture in a 1:1 ratio because this mixture does not substantially affect the surface characteristics after 90 daily immersions. On the contrary, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and vinegar solutions, even in low concentrations, should be used with caution for denture disinfection because they may alter the resin microtopography over time. BACKGROUND: Traditionally, alcohol sprays are used for disinfection of acrylic-base denture surfaces. A limited number of studies have assessed the role of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in this regard; however, it remains debatable whether conventional alcohol sprays are superior to aPDT in terms of antifungal activity or vis versa. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present in vitro study is to compare the antifungal activity of conventional alcohol sprays and aPDT on acrylic denture resin. METHODS: Individuals wearing complete dentures at least on one arch were included. Dentures were randomly divided into three groups. Groups 1-3 were disinfected with an alcohol-based antiseptic spray and aPDT, respectively. Assessment of oral yeast growth was done using swab samples. The culture mediums were incubated at 37 ∘ C for 72 hours and viewed through a microscope. The numbers of colony forming units (CFU/ml) were determined. P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: At baseline, the mean CFU/ml in Groups 1–3 were comparable. After disinfection, a statistically significant reduction in microbial CFU/ml was observed in Groups 1 (P < 0.05) and 2 (P < 0.05) compared with baseline. In Group 3, there was no difference in CFU/ml throughout the study. After disinfection, there was no difference in microbial CFU/ml in dentures in Groups 1 and 2. CONCLUSION: Conventional alcohol sprays are as effective as aPDT towards reducing oral yeasts CFU/ml on acrylic denture resin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The defect in the Velopharyngeal (VP) valve leads to problems in speech and swallowing. Such defects can be managed either by surgical means or palatal obturator. Fabrication of obturator in edentulous patients presents many challenges like lack of retention and support leading to functional compromise of a prosthesis. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a geriatric patient who was surgically treated for mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hard and soft palate. After surgery, the patient complained of nasal regurgitation of food and hypernasal speech. A wrought wire in a zigzag shape was used to attach the pharyngeal obturator to the maxillary overdenture for better retention and support of the prosthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of denture wearing on the occurrence of fungal isolates in the oral cavity before and after complete denture insertion. Fifty completely edentulous patients were selected. Swab samples were collected intraorally before the fabrication of complete dentures from the palatal mucosal surface and after complete denture fabrication (1 and 7 days after denture insertion). Further, these samples were inoculated and incubated. Results showed that in 48 patients, no isolate of fungus before denture insertion was found. In two subjects, results were false positive (contamination from the environment), and in six patients, there was an increase in growth, but not much significant increase of growth was seen (mild growth of fungus only after denture insertion). One of the major findings of this study was that the overall occurrence of fungal isolates (before and after denture insertion) in the oral cavity was not significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore the differences in plaque accumulation on the fitting surface of full‐arch implant‐supported fixed prostheses with contact or noncontact pontics. Materials and Methods: Nineteen patients (20 prostheses, 7 in the maxilla, and 13 in the mandible) intending to undergo full‐arch implant‐supported immediate function prostheses were recruited. During immediate restoration and using the midline as the boundary, one side was restored as a pontic and mucosa noncontact type (the test group), and the opposite side was restored as a pontic and mucosa contact type (the control group). In a follow‐up 6 months after the surgery, the cleanliness of the fitting surface of the immediate prosthesis was evaluated by plaque staining and debris index determination. Patient satisfaction was investigated by questionnaire. Results: Twenty prostheses from 19 patients included in the randomized controlled trial were followed up. Among the 20 prostheses, the percentage of area covered with plaque was significantly lower in the test group compared with that in the control group (31.5 ± 15.8% vs. 43.7 ± 15.3%; p < 0.001). The debris index in the test group was lower than that in the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant (2.77 ± 0.73 vs. 3.15 ± 0.90; p > 0.05). In the patient satisfaction survey, most of the patients were satisfied with most aspects of the prostheses, however, nearly half of the patients were not satisfied with the cleaning. Conclusions: The pontic and mucosa noncontact prosthetic design reduces plaque accumulation on the fitting surface, which is beneficial for maintaining oral cleanliness. Denture prostheses are an ideal and extensive reservoir for microorganisms to attach to their surfaces. The aim of the study was to elucidate interactions between materials for the fabrication of denture bases and the attachment of microorganisms, focusing on respiratory pathogens and Candida species. Specimens (6 mm × 1 mm) with a standardized surface roughness (Sa = 0.1 µm) were prepared from heat-pressed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), CAD/CAM-processed PMMA, and CAD/CAM-processed polyether ether ketone (PEEK). The specimens were randomly placed in the vestibular areas of complete upper dentures in seven patients and were removed either after 24 h without any oral hygiene measures or after a period of four weeks. The microorganisms adherent to the surface of the specimens were cultivated and subsequently analyzed using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The means and standard deviations were calculated, and the data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post-hoc test where appropriate (α = 0.05). There was a significant increase (p ≤ 0.004) in the total bacterial counts (CFU/mL) between the first (24 h) and the second (four weeks) measurements. Regarding quantitative microbiological analyses, no significant differences between the various materials were identified. Respiratory microorganisms were detected in all samples at both measurement time points, with a large variance between different patients. Only after four weeks, Candida species were identified on all materials but not in all participants. Candida species and respiratory microorganisms accumulate on various denture base resins. While no significant differences were identified between the materials, there was a tendency towards a more pronounced accumulation of microorganisms on conventionally processed PMMA. Magnets have been widely used in dentistry as a means of retention in various prosthodontic applications. This review summarizes the historical background, types, and modes of action of magnets in dentistry, including their uses in conventional removable prostheses, sectional dentures, overdentures, maxillofacial prostheses, and implant-supported prostheses. A comprehensive electronic literature search was performed through multiple databases, including Medline via Pubmed, Wiley Online Library, Ebscohost, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. We used the following keywords: "magnets", "retention", "overdenture", and "maxillofacial prosthesis", with a focus on articles published between October 1953 and March 2016. We found 20 articles, and 16 were selected for inclusion in this review based on their relevance to the topic at hand. Recent advancements in magnetic technology have resulted in newer magnets that exhibit superior biological compatibility and corrosion resistance. Objectives: Stability values of mini-implants (MIs) are ambiguous. Survival data for MIs as supplementary abutments in reduced dentitions are not available. The aim of this explorative research was to estimate the 3-year stability and survival of strategic MIs after immediate and delayed loading by existing removable partial dentures (RPDs). Material and methods: In a university and three dental practices, patients with unfavorable tooth distributions received supplementary MIs with diameters of 1.8, 2.1, and 2.4 mm. The participants were randomly allocated to group A (if the insertion torque ≥ 35 Ncm: immediate loading by housings; otherwise, immediate loading by RPD soft relining was performed) or delayed loading group B. Periotest values (PTVs) and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values were longitudinally compared using mixed models. Results: A total of 112 maxillary and 120 mandibular MIs were placed under 79 RPDs (31 maxillae). The 1st and 3rd quartile of the PTVs ranged between 1.7 and 7.8, and the RFA values ranged between 30 and 46 with nonrelevant group differences. The 3-year survival rates were 92% in group A versus 95% in group B and 99% in the mandible (one failure) versus 87% in the maxilla (eleven failures among four participants). Conclusions: Within the limitations of explorative analyses, there were no relevant differences between immediate and delayed loading regarding survival or stability of strategic MIs. Clinical relevance: The stability values for MIs are lower than for conventional implants. The MI failure rate in the maxilla is higher than in the mandible with cluster failure participants. Significant changes in the microstructure of the brain cause dementia and other mental declines associated with aging and disease. Although research has established a connection between oral health and dementia, the underlying pathologic mechanisms are still unknown. Aim: Our aim was to evaluate dentures' impact on the cognitive state of geriatric patients. Material and methods: A total of 108 individuals seeking treatment at the Faculty of Dental Medicine in Iasi, Romania, participated in the study, which ran from May 2022 to October 2022. Cognitive dysfunction was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. The acquired data were analyzed with IBM SPSS 26.0, and the p-value was set at 0.05. Results: The average value of the MMSE score was 21.81 ± 3.872. Differences between groups of wearer/non-wearer subjects were statistically significant for most of the questions in the questionnaire. Linear regression analysis showed that individuals with a high MMSE score have prosthodontic treatment. A decrease in the MMSE score is associated with a decrease in masticatory efficiency (B = 1.513, p = 0.268). Conclusions: This study provides further evidence that tooth loss is associated with worse cognitive performance. Objectives: This study investigated the surface characteristics of denture base resin coatings prepared using a novel silica-based film containing hinokitiol and assessed the effect of this coating on Candida albicans adhesion and growth. Methods: Silica-based coating solutions (control solution; CS) and CS containing hinokitiol (CS-H) were prepared. C. albicans biofilm formed on denture base specimens coated with each solution and these uncoated specimens (control) were analyzed using colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimen surfaces were analyzed by measuring the surface roughness and wettability and with Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Stability of coated specimens was assessed via immersion in water for 1 week for each group (control-1w, CS-1w, and CS-H-1w) followed by CFU assay, measurement of surface roughness and wettability, and FT-IR. Results: CS-H and CS-H-1w contained significantly lower CFUs than those present in the control and control-1w, which was also confirmed via SEM. Fluorescence microscopy from the CS-H group identified several dead cells. The values of surface roughness from coating groups were significantly less than those from the control and control-1w. The surface wettability from all coating groups exhibited high hydrophobicity. FT-IR analyses demonstrated that specimens were successfully coated, and 1H NMR analyses showed that hinokitiol was incorporated inside CS-H. Conclusions: A silica-based denture coating that incorporates hinokitiol inhibits C. albicans growth on denture. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogenic agent due to its ability to cause various types of infections, ranging from mild skin infections to sever systemic diseases. One of the most virulence factors of this bacterium is its ability to from biofilms on solid surfaces by anchoring the planktonic cells and by producing a protective layer of extra polymeric substances. Biofilm formation is controlled through many genes. The most important ones are icaA and icaD. Dentures are prosthetic devices that are made of different materials to replace lost teeth. The aim of this study is to examine the ability of different types of denture materials to support the biofilm formation of S. aureus at phenotypic level by detecting bacterial growth on them using crystal violet and scanning electron microscope, as well as genotypic level through detection and estimation of gene icaA and icaD expression. • The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between tooth loss, removable denture usage, and the progression of the Frailty Index, considering the Frailty Index as a time-variant variable. • Tooth loss is associated with a more rapid progression of frailty over time amongst adults in England. • Professionals should consider that maintaining teeth may be effective for suppressing frailty progression. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between indicators of oral health status (number of teeth; denture use) and the progression of frailty amongst adults in England. The subjects were participants of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging [ELSA] aged 50 years and older. We used panel data from three waves of the study (Waves 7–9). Indicators of oral health comprised the number of teeth (≥20; 10–19; 1–9; 0) and combination of removable denture usage and the number of teeth. Frailty was assessed by the 32-item Frailty Index (FI). Covariates were age, sex, education, marital status, smoking, alcohol, and physical activity. The longitudinal relationship between oral health indicators and change in FI were investigated using linear mixed-effect models considering frailty as a time-varying variable. Among the 7,557 participants, compared to those people with 20 or more teeth, change in frailty over time was significantly higher among those with less than 20 teeth: 10–19 teeth (β: 0.249, 95 %CI: 0.116 to 0.382), and 1–9 teeth (β: 0.238, 95 %CI: 0.053 to 0.423) and being edentate (β: 0.286, 95 %CI: 0.106 to 0.465) when adjusting for co-variates. The rise in frailty over time was significantly higher among those with fewer teeth (<20 teeth), including those using dentures. This longitudinal analysis suggests that tooth loss is associated with accelerated progression of frailty and utilizing dentures did not reduce the trend in frailty. Diamond thin films were deposited on WC-Co tools using the hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique at varying pressures and oxygen doping levels. As the oxygen doping content increased, the purity of the diamond phase improved, and the density of the <111> crystal plane on the film's surface increased. The growth rate of diamond films initially increased and then decreased under low pressure, with a corresponding decrease in residual compressive stress. Conversely, at high pressure, increased oxygen doping enhanced the diamond phase purity and growth rate while reducing residual compressive stress. Cutting experiments on pre-sintered zirconia ceramics for milling linear slots and engraving dentures demonstrated that diamond-coated milling cutters exhibited superior cutting performance under consistent oxygen and carbon source concentrations and stable air pressure conditions. The oxygen-doped diamond-coated milling cutter grown at a pressure of 1 KPa exhibited the longest service life, attributed to its reduced surface roughness, lower cutting force, and increased density of the <111> crystal plane orientation. Aim: The effects of implant locations and prosthesis design (palate less, full palate) on stress values of the implant and bone in maxillary overdenture prostheses were examined and compared with finite element analysis. Swallowing a foreign body is one of the reasons of patients' urgent referral to the hospital. Proper diagnostics allows visualization of the swallowed object and planning of treatment, including endoscopy and surgery. Due to the possibility of potentially life-threatening complications following pharyngeal and esophageal foreign body extraction procedures, the patient should always be carefully monitored for symptoms suggesting adverse events for further appropriate diagnostic and management. We present a case report of a 47-year-old patient who, after successful endoscopic removal of a large denture from the hypopharynx, was found to have a perforation of the left piriform recess. Background: Treatment of edentulous patients with implant‐supported over‐dentures improves denture's retention and stability. Published data concerning implant‐supported overdenture with cantilever bars that claimed that can affect the survival and bone loss of implants are scarce. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 5‐year clinical performance of mandibular implant‐supported over‐dentures with different attachment systems. Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, 103 patients who had received mandibular over‐dentures supported by two implants were evaluated in a 5‐year follow up. Studied groups were patients with Spherblock ball attachment (58 patients), Dolder bar with cantilever (36 patients), and Locator attachment (9 patients). Marginal bone‐loss around implants, prosthetic complications, soft tissue status of the implants (gingival index, plaque index, pocket depth, and bleeding on probing) were used to compare studied groups. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) criteria was used to assay patient's satisfaction. One‐way ANOVA, Scheffe, Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney, and Fisher's exact tests, were used for the data analysis (α = 0.05). Results: One hundred and three patients (46 male, 57 female, mean age 64.7 ± 8.6) with 206 implants (Strauman) were studied. The implant survival rate was 100% with mean bone loss of 0.22 mm around implants in 5 years. Prosthetic complications including attachment wear and denture fracture occurred more often with ball attachments. The number of attachment replacement, and post insertion appointments were significantly less in patients with bar attachments (p < 0.05). Pocket depth and gingival index were less in the ball attachment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Mandibular overdenture supported by two implants can be considered a successful treatment in edentulous patients. Aim: To determine whether occlusal maintenance and reconstruction by dental intervention is associated with the prognosis of older home‐care patients. Methods: The study participants were 289 older home‐care patients (101 males, mean age 82.2 ± 7.7 years) who received visiting dental treatment from dental clinics in the region between 2012 and 2018. The participants were followed up for 1000 days after receiving the necessary dental treatment in a home‐visit setting. The participants were divided into three groups: those with natural tooth occlusion, those whose molar occlusion was maintained or reconstructed by dentures, and those whose occlusion was not reconstructed. Factors associated with prognosis were determined using the Cox proportional hazard model, with occlusal status, comorbidities, the activity of daily living, and residence status as explanatory variables. Results: In the overall population, occlusal status (hazard ratio [HR] of those with occlusal disintegration versus those with natural tooth occlusion: 2.1, confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.18–3.82) and age (HR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.44–3.61) were identified as significant factors. In the group of participants aged <85 years, only occlusal status (HR of those with occlusal disintegration versus those with natural tooth occlusion: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.34–8.68) was a significant factor. In the group of participants aged ≥85 years, occlusal status was not significantly associated with prognosis. Conclusions: The maintenance and acquisition of occlusal support achieved by dental treatment contribute to improved prognosis in older patients younger than 85 years requiring home nursing care. Introduction: Idealistic prosthodontic treatment goals differ for different ethnic groups around the world. Dentogenic concept provides a quality of treatment and a more natural, harmonious and pleasing prosthesis as desired by patients. Providing natural and satisfactory aesthetics is especially important for anterior tooth prosthesis. Various degrees of crown angulation, have significant effect on attractiveness of smile. Aim: To study the degree of mesiodistal angulation of maxillary right and left lateral incisors in both genders of different age groups, to guide in the arrangement of teeth fulfilling the fundamentals by providing a functionally and aesthetically satisfactory denture. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Department of Prosthodontics at College of Dental Sciences, Davangere, Karnataka, India, from June 2012 to May 2015. A total of 500 patients with normal maxillomandibular relationship (250 males and 250 females) were included in the study and were divided into three age groups i.e, group A (21- 30 years), group B (31-40 years), group C (41-50 years). Clinical examination of patients was performed and dental casts of these patients were studied. A custom-made positioning jig was used to measure the mesiodistal angulations of maxillary right and left lateral incisors. The results were obtained by statistical analysis using paired-t test, One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's Post-Hoc tests. Results: The mean value for mesiodistal angulation of maxillary right and left lateral incisors in males was found to be 6.648±0.9889 and 6.704±1.0042 degrees, respectively. The mean value for mesiodistal angulation of maxillary right and left lateral incisors in females, was found to be 6.592±0.8296 and 6.580±0.8381 degrees, respectively. Conclusion: The mesiodistal angulation of maxillary lateral incisors was comparatively greater in males than in females and the variation in the angulation was slightly more for maxillary left lateral incisors. The values for mesiodistal angulations of maxillary lateral incisors can serve, as guidelines for the arrangement of teeth and help in achieving desired aesthetics, provide adequate lip support and restore required functions. Introduction Dimensional stability of removable dentures in various disinfecting agents is considered an important and necessary property. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dimensional stability of two types of heat-cured acrylic after immersion in distilled water, ozonated water and sodium hypochlorite solution. Material and Method In this in-vitro study, 60 disk-shaped samples were made, including 30 samples of Acropars heat cure acrylic resin and 30 samples of Pro Base heat cure acrylic resin. 30 samples of each acrylic were divided into three subgroups (n=10): 1) Immersion for 8 hours in distilled water (control group). 2) immersion for 8 hours in 1% sodium hypochlorite and 3) immersion for 8 hours in ozonized water. After every 8 hours, the solutions were changed and all samples were placed in disinfectant solutions for 16 weeks. Before and after immersion in each of the environments, the diameter of the samples was measured with an accurate micrometer with an accuracy of 1 micron. Finally, the obtained data were analyzed through appropriate statistical tests. Results Results showed that the dimensional changes of Pro Base heat cure acrylic resin by immersion in any of the 1% sodium hypochlorite solutions, ozonated water and, distilled water are not significant, and the dimensional changes of Acropars (Iranian) acrylic resin are not also significant in each of these solutions. Therefore, both disinfectant solutions are suitable for disinfection of dentures. Conclusion After 16 weeks of immersion, the change in dimensions of heat cure acrylic resins in ozonated water is clinically acceptable, and according to the confirmation of the appropriate disinfection property of ozonated water in previous research and further studies, it can be suggested to the patients as a suitable disinfectant for disinfection of dentures. Polymers remain an integral part of denture fabrication materials, specifically polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA). PMMA has been extensively used, particularly in construction as a denture base material. The mylohyoid muscle, one of the suprahyoid group, forms the floor of the mouth. Its main function is swallowing. It is a margin between the sublingual and the submandibular spaces and is important in the pathway of oral and maxillofacial infection. In prosthodontics, it is one of anatomic landmarks that limits the lingual margin of the mandibular denture. Currently, the muscle receives much interest in the fields of maxillofacial reconstruction and rejuvenation. The hemorrhagic issue around the mandibular lingual region is usually involved with the mylohyoid especially in the dental implant installation. Background: Replacement of missing tooth plays an important role in patient's comfort and self-esteem. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate the most commonly used impression materials and techniques practiced for crowns and bridgework by prosthodontists and general dental practitioners compared to the theoretical methods suggested in the literature and to determine the clinical factors that might influence the decision-making process for the selection of impression materials and techniques. Materials and Methods: Pre-tested and pre-validated structured and closed-ended anonymous questionnaire was shared with general dental practitioners and prosthodontists. Results: Most of the prosthodontists use diagnostic impression compared to general dental practitioners (P<0.01). Full-arch tray was used by general dental practitioners significantly more frequently compared to prosthodontists (P<0.01) for single anterior, single posterior, anterior, and posterior bridge preparations. Alginate hydrocolloid was used by general dental practitioners significantly more than prosthodontists (P<0.05); however, addition silicone and condensation silicone were used by prosthodontists significantly more than general dental practitioners (P<0.05). For the impression technique followed in case of using elastomeric impression materials, the prosthodontists used the two-step putty reline technique with spacer more commonly, while general dental practitioners used the multiple mix technique (P<0.01). For the use of provisional restoration for single tooth crowns and for all the bridges, prosthodontists used provisional restoration in significantly higher proportion as compared to general dental practitioners (P<0.01). Conclusion: According to our study compared to general dental practitioners, practices of the prosthodontists regarding use of fixed partial denture is more in line with the current global trend. This study aimed to assess the perception of dentists on the complications associated with prosthodontic treatments with acrylic dentures and overdentures in partially or complete edentulous patients. The study analyzed the complications of acrylic dentures and overdentures using a questionnaire with 24 open or closed questions, with single or multiple answers. The participants were 63 dentists, mostly women (77.8%), aged between 30 and 39 years old (52.4%), more than half of them with a clinical experience of less than 15 years. The main complications encountered were: lesions of the oral mucosa (52.4%), lack of maintenance (44.4%) or stability of dentures (39.7%), fracture of acrylic bases (14.3%), and detachment of attachment systems (44.4%). The complete maxillary acrylic dentures fractured most often (38.1%), frequently on the midline (58.7%), the main causes being accidental fall, masticatory stress, or lack of stability of the dentures. The most common intervention to correct the complications of dentures was the repair of fractured acrylic bases (33.3%). The study exposed that dentists are aware of the possible complications of acrylic dentures, which they correlate with the peculiarities of oral structures, but also with some deficiencies of prosthodontic restorations, materials and technologies. Maxillary acrylic dentures, overdentures, and partial acrylic dentures have a high risk and fracture rate, but the use of new technologies and materials can reduce the complications rate of acrylic dentures and overdentures. Denture stomatitis is induced by irritation or an inflammatory response when wearing a denture for a long time. Candida species are the leading cause of biofilm formation on the surfaces and fissures of dentures. Thus, this study aimed to formulate and evaluate fluconazole tablets for use in preparing a disinfectant mixture with anticandidal activity. For size enlargement of lactose, a tablet diluent, using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as an agglomerating agent, was developed to enhance the flowability and compactability of the tablet preparation using direct compression. Lactose agglomerates with 6% PVP were used as a diluent for the fluconazole tablets. Furthermore, other excipients were used, such as a buffering agent, disintegrant, surfactant, and lubricant. The fluconazole tablets obtained could be dispersed and dissolved within 10 min in distilled water to achieve a clear mixture, providing a neutral pH and 96% transmittance. Furthermore, the fluconazole mixtures displayed anticandidal efficiency against C. albicans with a similar effect to the standard fluconazole solution. These findings suggest that the fluconazole-loaded lactose agglomerate tablets show strong potential when prepared using direct compression. Background: Impaction of dentures has potentially significant morbidity and management challenges. This study sought to leverage on the occurrence of swallowed dentures to advance discussions on its management and prevention. Methods: A 5-year retrospective review of patients seen on account of impacted dentures at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital was done. Variables obtained included age, sex, location of impacted denture, treatment done, denture type, number of teeth, and complications. Variables were analyzed, and descriptive summaries were reported. Results: There was a record of 898 cases of impacted foreign bodies which presented to the department. Fifty-five (6.1%) records were on account of impacted dentures. These consisted of 25 (45%) males and 30 (55%) females. Ranging from 23 to 98 years, the mean and median ages were 55.7 (±18.1) years and 56.5 years respectively. There were no complications, and no identifiable predisposing patient conditions. All prostheses were removable acrylic dentures, and some observations included worn-out and loose dentures, while several had their prostheses dislodging in the process of swallowing tablet medications with water. Conclusion: Swallowed dentures are not rare occurrences in Ghana. Denture wearers should, therefore, be encouraged to get professional reviews, especially when prostheses get unretentive, while dental professionals are urged to incorporate measures in their fabrication to reduce the occurrence of swallowed dentures. Background & Objectives: Oral Candidiasis is the most common opportunistic fungal infection that could affect the oral mucosa. Studies to date did not compare the colony count of candida of the anterior and posterior surfaces of the tongue. This study makes an attempt to compare the Candida spp. on the anterior and posterior surfaces of tongue among healthy denture and non-denture wearers. Materials & Methods: Participants of the current cross-sectional study were 26 healthy denture wearers (DW) and 10 healthy non-denture wearers (NDW). Oral specimens were collected from anterior and posterior tongue dorsa by swab - bing for mycological examination. After 48 h incubation on Sabouraud dextrose agar (S) and chloramphenicol (SC) and chloramphenicol and Cycloheximide (SCC) ™ medium, C. Albicans and non-Albicans were identified by Germ Tube test. Isolated colonies were evaluated. Obtained data were analyzed by SPSS software version 17. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests were used for statistical comparison of data due to non-compliance with normal distribution. Results: The higher rate of isolated colonies was seen in DW group compared to NDW group (P-Value = 0.03). There was a significant difference between candida colonization of anterior and posterior surface of tongue (P-Value = 0.006). C. Albicans was the most common isolated candida species. Conclusions: Mycological findings of this study revealed that the presence of denture can increase colonization of candida on the posterior surface of the tongue. Introduction: This research paper is a cross-sectional study that aims to estimate the prevalence of oral health problems among adult patients in palliative care, as well as to investigate the oral hygiene practices of palliative care patients in Brunei Darussalam. Patients and methods: In this study, the Oral Palliative Care and Assessment and Referral tool (OPCAR) along with a 15-item questionnaire were utilized as reliable tools for measurements. All palliative care patients who had been assessed in this study were invited to participate. A total of 90 palliative care patients were invited to participate and 73 patient data were used for the subsequent data analysis. Results: The three most common problems among palliative care patients were saliva, lips, and teeth category. Fisher's exact test identified there were significantly higher teeth-related problems (teeth caries, fracture, broken root stumps) in non-denture wearing patients as compared with denture wearing patients. However, other associations between denture wearing to oral hygiene was of little significance. Conclusions: Using the normal approximation sample method, it was revealed that almost all the participants were eligible to be referred to the dental clinic for at least one oral problem. Elderly patients with systemic disorders and immunocompromised patients seem to have a higher risk of developing morbidity from COVID-19. Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a potentially dangerous pathogen for these patients, especially for denture wearers with prosthetic stomatitis who require mechanical ventilation. C. albicans infection, the main candidiasis infection associated with denture wear, can complicate COVID-19 and increase the associated morbidity and mortality. Therefore, early diagnosis of C. albicans infection in COVID-19 patients is important to establish more effective antifungal treatment methods and prophylaxis strategies. Background: Single implant mandibular overdentures (SIMOs) can improve mastication in edentulous elderly people. However, little attention has been paid to their effects on articulation disorders and the swallowing threshold relative to those of conventional complete dentures (CDs). Objective: To compare the effects of new conventional CD set and SIMOs on articulation disorders, mandibular movements during speech and swallowing threshold using a paired study design. Methods: Twenty‐two edentulous Brazilian Portuguese–speaking elderly people (mean age 66.7 ± 4.6 years) were first evaluated whilst wearing their old conventional CDs. Articulation disorders were analysed by audio and video recordings, mandibular movements during speech were measured by kinesiography, and the swallowing threshold was assessed by masticatory cycle counting and medium particle size (X50) calculation. Participants then received new conventional CDs, and evaluations were repeated 2 months later. Subsequently, single implants were installed in the midlines of subjects' mandibles, and the conventional CDs were converted to SIMOs. After 2 months of SIMOs use, the evaluations were repeated. Data were submitted to the Cochran‐Mantel‐Haenszel and ANOVA. Results: No difference in articulation disorders was found between new conventional CD and SIMO use. The frequency of anterior lisp during /s/ and /z/ phoneme pronunciation was reduced with new conventional CD use relative to old conventional CD use (p <.05). The X50 decreased progressively with new conventional CD and SIMO use (both p <.05). Aim: Dentures play an important role in improving masticatory and oropharyngeal swallowing functions in some edentulous patients without dysphagia. However, few studies have been conducted on patients with dysphagia. This study investigated the effect of dentures on pharyngeal swallowing function in patients with dysphagia. Methods: Older inpatients with dysphagia who used well‐fitting dentures were included in the study. Videofluoroscopic swallowing study findings with and without dentures were compared. Pharyngeal residue and area as spatial, the distance between the maxilla and mandible, hyoid bone/laryngeal displacement, and upper esophageal sphincter opening as kinematics, oral/pharyngeal transit time as temporal measurements, and patient‐reported symptoms were evaluated. The primary outcome was the pharyngeal residue measured using the normalized residue ratio scale. Comparisons were made using the paired t‐test, Wilcoxon signed‐rank test and Fisher's exact test. Results: The mean age of the 27 participants was 86.1 ± 6.8 years. The vallecular residue was more in those without dentures (with dentures: 0.01 [0–0.02], without dentures: 0.03 [0–0.08]; P = 0.003). The pyriform sinus residue showed no significant difference. Denture removal significantly increased the pharyngeal area. The distance between the maxilla and mandible decreased in the absence of dentures, and other kinematic measurements showed no significant differences. Oral/pharyngeal transit time was prolonged without dentures. Conclusions: Morphological changes caused by the removal of dentures led to pharyngeal expansion, which may result in increased vallecular residue. Introduction: Dentures are worn by 20% of the United Kingdom population for both physical and psychological symptoms associated with tooth loss. However, significant morbidity and mortality can result if dentures are swallowed or aspirated. This 10-year review investigated the development of complications following denture aspiration or ingestion, and identified key learning points. Methods: The Medline database was searched for cases of denture ingestion or aspiration from October 1, 2009, to October 31, 2019. Search terms included "dental prosthesis, denture, dental plate, bridge and false teeth" and "swallow, ingest, eat, aspirate and inhale." Potential factors influencing the development of complications were assessed (hollow viscus perforation, fistula formation, abscess, bowel obstruction, necrosis, hemorrhage, and airway obstruction). Statistical analysis was performed using χ2 and Pearson correlation tests in R Studio. No ethical approval was required. Results: Eighty-five patients were identified from 77 case reports. Fourteen articles were excluded due to insufficient information. Complications were documented in 37.6% (n = 32) of patients with 2 cases resulting in death. Duration of symptoms over 1 day (P =.005) and delayed removal beyond 4 days post-ingestion (P =.017) was significantly associated with increased rates of complications. There was no significant association between complication rate and patient age, denture type, level of impaction, or radiolucency. Conclusion: Denture aspiration or ingestion can have serious consequences. Factors impacting complication rate revolve around early recognition and treatment. Clinician awareness of the potential risks of dentures is paramount to early diagnosis. We recommend early intervention to reduce the morbidity associated with this unassuming device. BACKGROUND: In clinical work, the main methods to repair the broken porcelain at the fixed end of the precise attachment are to dismantle and re-make, and the prosthodontics department adopts the method of porcelain crown to repair the broken porcelain patients, which has achieved good results. OBJECTIVE: To compare the repair effects of full crown type, buccal partial crown type and crown the resin after the MK1 precision attachment fixed end collapsed through the experiment in vitro. METHODS: Forty-five specimens of MK1 gold porcelain crown fixed end non-bolting dental crown were prepared. Among them, 15 were fully crown reconstructed crown and 15 were buccal and facial reconstructed crown respectively. Conventional bonding of glass ion-cement was performed. The remaining 15 were repaired directly with resin. The maximum shear bonding strength of each sample was detected. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The shear bonding strength of the full-crown reconstructed crown, the buccal and facial reconstructed crown, and the resin directly repaired broken porcelain specimens were (9.95±0.97), (5.50±0.76), and (1.92±0.52) MPa, respectively, with significant differences among the groups (all P < 0.001). The results showed that it was feasible to repair the precise attachment of broken porcelain MK1 with the reconstructed gold porcelain crown, and the reconstructed crown and the reconstructed cheek and face crown were obviously superior to the resin direct repair. Background/Aim. A large number of studies have been conducted on the survival rate of ceramic single tooth restorations, but few studies have discussed the influence of the number of restoration surfaces on their survival rate. This study aimed to evaluate the survival rate of ceramic inlay and onlay restorations in posterior teeth with one-surface or multi-surface after a 10-year follow-up. Methods. PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Wanfang databases were searched for articles published by July 31, 2016. Randomized controlled trials and non-randomized trials were collected and patients with posterior teeth defect were included. Publication bias and sensitivity analysis were also assessed. Results. Five studies comprising 6,720 cases were included in this meta-analysis. The results indicated that the survival rate of ceramic inlay and onlay restorations with two-surface was significantly higher than that of onesurface restorations (within 10 years) [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.11; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.33-3.36, p = 0.002], and the survival rate of three-surface restorations was higher than that of two-surface ones (HR = 2.50; 95% CI = 1.36-4.59, p = 0.003).
