Simple Summary: Simple Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells capable of differentiating into various cell types, including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. Renowned for their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, MSCs hold great promise as tools for tissue repair and therapeutic applications. To facilitate the large-scale production of sheep umbilical cord MSCs (UCMSCs), the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene was introduced into UCMSCs to promote immortalization. This study provides valuable insights into (a) the proliferation and anti-aging capabilities of transgenic MSCs compared to primary MSCs; (b) the absence of potential tumorigenicity exhibited in TERT-UCMSCs; and (c) the differentiation potential of TERT-UCMSCs. Immortalized MSCs exhibit enhanced proliferation and anti-aging abilities without tumorigenicity concerns, making them a safe immortalized cell line suitable for medical treatments. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess significant differentiation potential, making them highly promising in medicine and immunotherapy due to their regenerative capabilities and exosome secretion. However, challenges such as limited cell divisions and complex testing hinder large-scale MSC production. In this study, we successfully established an immortalized MSC line by transfecting the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene into MSCs isolated from pregnant sheep umbilical cords. This approach effectively inhibits cell senescence and promotes cell proliferation, enabling the generation of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) on a larger scale. Our findings demonstrate that these transfected TERT-UCMSCs exhibit enhanced proliferative capacity and a reduced aging rate compared to regular UCMSCs while maintaining their stemness without tumorigenicity concerns. Global energy consumption has led to concerns about potential supply problems, energy consumption and growing environmental impacts. This paper comprehensively provides a detailed assessment of current studies on the subject of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technology in net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs). The review is validated through various case studies, which highlight the significance of factors such as building surface area to volume ratio (A/V), window-wall ratio (WWR), glass solar heating gain coefficient (SHGC), and others in achieving the NZEBs standards. In addition, this review article draws the following conclusions: (1) NZEBs use renewable energy to achieve energy efficiency and carbon neutrality. (2) NZEBs implementation, however, has some limitations, including the negligence of indoor conditions in the analysis, household thermal comfort, and the absence of an energy supply and demand monitoring system. (3) Most researchers advise supplementing facade and window BIPV as solely roofing BIPV will not be able to meet the building's electricity usage. (4) Combining BIPV with building integrated solar thermal (BIST), considering esthetics and geometry, enhances outcomes and helps meet NZEB criteria. (5) BIPV designs should follow standards and learn from successful cases. However, to ascertain the long-term reliability and structural integrity of BIPV systems, a comprehensive study of their potential degradation mechanisms over extended periods is imperative. Herein, a strong and stable gelatin-based composite hydrogel was fabricated by incorporation of amino-functionalized microfibrillated cellulose (AMFC) into gelatin matrix along with genipin crosslinking. The hydrogel consists of chemical and physical crosslinks among gelatin chains and AMFC fibrils. The morphology, swelling behavior and compressive properties of the composite hydrogels were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties and structural stability of the gelatin hydrogels were improved remarkably by the addition of AMFC due to the formation of a hybrid network structure. The composite hydrogel has a compressive strength up to 1.52 MPa at a strain of 80 %, which is 41.2 and 1.8 times higher than that of the conventional physical and genipin-crosslinked gelatin hydrogels, respectively. Moreover, the developed gelatin-based composite hydrogels reinforced with AMFC exhibit good enzymatic stability, high surface hydrophobicity, tunable swelling property and excellent biocompatibility, which are expected to have potential applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. [Display omitted] • Soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS) films were crosslinked with citric acid (CA). • CA-crosslinked SSPS films exhibited enhanced mechanical, barrier, thermal, and antioxidant properties. • CA-crosslinking endows SSPS films with excellent antibacterial performance. • The CA-crosslinked SSPS films effectively extended the shelf life of lard. In this work, a nontoxic crosslinking agent, citric acid (CA), was used to crosslink glycerol-plasticized SSPS films via a heat activated reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed the occurrence of esterification reaction between CA and SSPS. Microstructure of the CA-crosslinked SSPS films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The water resistance, mechanical, UV-barrier, water vapor barrier, antioxidant and thermal properties of SSPS films were enhanced by CA crosslinking. The SSPS film crosslinked with 5 % CA exhibited a maximum tensile strength of 6.5 MPa and a minimum water solubility of 34.3 %. The CA-crosslinked SSPS film also presented superior antibacterial properties against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Application test results showed that the CA-crosslinked SSPS film can effectively delay the oxidative deterioration of lard during storage, suggesting that the developed CA-crosslinked SSPS film could be a promising candidate for active food packaging. The rapid growth of global industrialization and urbanization has led to the excessive use of non-renewable energy sources and the alarming release of greenhouse gases within the construction industry. In response, adopting sustainable and environmentally friendly building materials has emerged as a vital solution for achieving the international sustainable development goals set by the United Nations. This review discusses the potential benefits of incorporating biochar-based bricks and insulation materials, focusing on their preparation methods, material properties, emission reduction capabilities, effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing thermal insulation, and promising economic prospects. The major points are: (1) Biochar-based materials offer significant potential for reducing the carbon footprint of buildings and enhancing their thermal insulation properties. (2) With a thermal conductivity ranging from 0.08 to 0.2 W/(m·K), biochar insulation materials contribute to reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. (3) Replacing one ton of cement with biochar in brick production can substantially reduce 1351–1505 kg CO2-eq over the entire life cycle. (4) Using biochar as part of concrete insulation saves about 59–65 kg of carbon dioxide per ton while offering clear economic benefits. Although biochar insulation is comparatively more expensive than traditional insulation materials like fiberglass and foam, its energy-saving advantages can balance the extra cost. There is a growing interest in the development of conductive hydrogels based on natural polymers for sensing applications due to their flexibility, versatility and environmental friendliness. However, achieving strong hydrogels capable of withstanding mechanical stress while maintaining their desirable characteristics remains a challenge. This study proposed a strategy to tailor the mechanical and electrical conductivity of gelatin hydrogels by combining genipin crosslinking with the modulation of aggregation states of gelatin chains through Hofmeister effect. The obtained conductive gelatin hydrogels exhibit high tensile strength (5.48 MPa) and compressive stress at 80 % strain (5.66 MPa), excellent stretchability (>500 %), remarkable freezing-resistant performance, and good strain sensitivity. By virtue of these outstanding properties, the hydrogels were used as strain sensors for human motion detection, demonstrating a gauge factor of 0.6 at 110–200 % tensile strain. Additionally, the hydrogel sensors demonstrate a rapid response time (<0.32 s) and can withstand cyclic tensile/compressive loads at both room temperature and −20 °C, owing to their compact and stable network structure formed by the synergistic action of Hofmeister effect and chemical crosslinking. Solution‐processed quasi‐2D perovskites contain multiple quantum wells with a broad width distribution. Inhomogeneity results in the charge funneling into the smallest bandgap components, which hinders deep‐blue emission and accelerates Auger recombination. Here, a synthetic strategy applied to a range of quasi‐2D perovskite systems is reported, that significantly narrows the quantum well dispersity. It is shown that the phase distribution in the perovskite film is significantly narrowed with controlled, simultaneous evaporation of solvent and antisolvent. Modulation of film formation kinetics of quasi‐2D perovskite enables stable deep‐blue electroluminescence with a peak emission wavelength of 466 nm and a narrow linewidth of 14 nm. Light emitting diodes using the perovskite film show a maximum luminance of 280 cd m–2 at an external quantum efficiency of 0.1%. Several associations between the built environment and COVID-19 case distribution have been identified in previous studies. However, few studies have explored the non-linear associations between the built environment and COVID-19 at the community level. This study employed the March 2022 Shanghai COVID-19 pandemic as a case study to examine the association between built-environment characteristics and the incidence of COVID-19. A non-linear modeling approach, namely the boosted regression tree model, was used to investigate this relationship. A multi-scale study was conducted at the community level based on buffers of 5-minute, 10-minute, and 15-minute walking distances. The main findings are as follows: (1) Relationships between built environment variables and COVID-19 case distribution vary across scales of analysis at the neighborhood level. (2) Significant non-linear associations exist between built-environment characteristics and COVID-19 case distribution at different scales. Population, housing price, normalized difference vegetation index, Shannon's diversity index, number of bus stops, floor–area ratio, and distance from the city center played important roles at different scales. These non-linear results provide a more refined reference for pandemic responses at different scales from an urban planning perspective and offer useful recommendations for a sustainable COVID-19 post-pandemic response. Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals enable the realization and exploitation of quantum phenomena in a controlled manner, and can be scaled up for commercial uses. These materials have become important for a wide range of applications, from ultrahigh definition displays, to solar cells, quantum computing, bioimaging, optical communications, and many more. Over the last decade, lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals have rapidly gained prominence as efficient semiconductors. Although the majority of studies have focused on large nanocrystals in the weak- to intermediate-confinement regime, quantum dots (QDs) in the strongly-confined regime (with sizes smaller than the Bohr diameter, which ranges from 4–12 nm for lead-halide perovskites) offer unique opportunities, including polarized light emission and color-pure, stable luminescence in the region that is unattainable by perovskites with single-halide compositions. In this tutorial review, we bring together the latest insights into this emerging and rapidly growing area, focusing on the synthesis, steady-state optical properties (including exciton fine-structure splitting), and transient kinetics (including hot carrier cooling) of strongly-confined perovskite QDs. We also discuss recent advances in their applications, including single photon emission for quantum technologies, as well as light-emitting diodes. We finish with our perspectives on future challenges and opportunities for strongly-confined QDs, particularly around improving the control over monodispersity and stability, important fundamental questions on the photophysics, and paths forward to improve the performance of perovskite QDs in light-emitting diodes. Research efforts have led to improved stability of the black phase in CsPbI3 films; however, these strategies—including strain and doping—are based on organic‐ligand‐capped perovskites, which prevent perovskites from forming the close‐packed quantum dot (QD) solids necessary to achieve high charge and thermal transport. We developed an inorganic ligand exchange that leads to CsPbI3 QD films with superior phase stability and increased thermal transport. The atomic‐ligand‐exchanged QD films, once mechanically coupled, exhibit improved phase stability, and we link this to distributing strain across the film. Operando measurements of the temperature of the LEDs indicate that KI‐exchanged QD films exhibit increased thermal transport compared to controls that rely on organic ligands. The LEDs exhibit a maximum EQE of 23 % with an electroluminescence emission centered at 640 nm (FWHM: ≈31 nm). Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have efficient optical absorption and emission in the visible range, and show a strong quantum confinement effect and high external quantum efficiency. They have been at the forefront of next‐generation photovoltaics and optoelectronics applications. However, two major challenges associated with perovskites and their nanomaterials are poor stability (such as against moisture and polar solvents), as well as the lack of efficient nanopatterning methods. In this work, a promising approach is provided to address both of those major challenges by molecular engineering and integration of QDs with block copolymers (BCP). The BCP thermoplastic elastomers not only substantially improve the stability of perovskite QDs by encapsulating them in a highly stable and soft matrix, but also enable molecular‐level control of the alignment and assembly of perovskite QDs in the microphase‐separated BCP matrix. It is demonstrated that designing and synthesis of compatible polymer ligands for perovskite QDs is key to enabling their selective and strong interaction with the BCP matrix. The structure and molecular weight of the BCP also play an important role in the interfacial structure and optical properties of the QDs‐BCP nanocomposites. Traditional building materials have some drawbacks in the construction industry, particularly in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. Biomaterials derived from renewable sources are a promising alternative, significantly reducing the greenhouse effect and enhancing energy efficiency. However, traditional materials still dominate the construction sector, and there is a lack of understanding among some policymakers and developers regarding biomaterials. Here, we review building biomaterials and their policies and life cycle assessment through case studies. Bio-based materials have the potential to reduce over 320,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. They also exhibit advantages like decreasing water absorption by 40%, reducing energy consumption by 8.7%, enhancing acoustic absorption by 6.7%, and improving mechanical properties. We summarize recent advancements in mycelial materials, bioconcrete, natural fibers, and fiber-reinforced composites. We also explore the contributions of nanotechnology and microalgae technology in enhancing biomaterials' thermal insulation and eco-friendliness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ruddlesden–Popper perovskites (RPPs) feature enhanced stability compared to their bulk counterparts and attract attention for potential applications in light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). However, to date, blue‐emitting RPPs rely on halide compositional tuning, resulting in spectral shifts due to halide segregation under photo‐/electrical‐excitation. Here, efficient blue‐emitting materials with single‐halide RPPs using organic spacer engineering are reported. Experimental and computational results show that the (110)‐oriented thin films exhibit larger bandgap and enhanced stability regardless of the choice of spacers, relative to the (100)‐oriented RPPs. The correlation between the lattice structures and optoelectronic properties reveals that this new class of RPPs exhibits sky‐blue emission at 483 nm with a quantum efficiency of ≈62%. Spearman correlation between the steric size of the spacers and the bandgap is estimated to be 92%, showing that the steric effect is crucial influencers. Broadband emission with a large Stokes shift is of interest for applications in solid‐state lighting. Such emission is often achieved with self‐trapped excitons; however, in reduced‐dimensional perovskites, high‐performance self‐trapped emission has, until now, been widely observed only in lead‐based materials. Here, the synthesis in an air ambient of reduced‐dimensional Sn‐based perovskite phosphors R2 +xSnI4 +x [R = octylammonium (OTA), hexylammonium (HA) or butylammonium (BA)] is reported, an advance achieved by tailoring the synthesis of the Ruddlesden‐Popper 2D perovskites R2SnI4. The lead‐free R2 +xSnI4 +x phosphors have broadband self‐trapped emission with over 80% photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and more than a 150 nm Stokes shift. White‐light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) based on OTA2 +xSnI4 +x phosphors exhibit warm‐white emission (correlated color temperature = 2654K) suited to home lighting, and a CRI of 92, among the best for Pb‐free perovskite WLEDs reported to date. Perovskite‐based light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are now approaching the upper limits of external quantum efficiency (EQE); however, their application is currently limited by reliance on lead and by inadequate color purity. The Rec. 2020 requires Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.708, 0.292) for red emitters, but present‐day perovskite devices only achieve (0.71, 0.28). Here, lead‐free PeLEDs are reported with color coordinates of (0.706, 0.294)—the highest purity reported among red PeLEDs. The variation of the emission spectrum is also evaluated as a function of temperature and applied potential, finding that emission redshifts by <3 nm under low temperature and by <0.3 nm V−1 with operating voltage. The prominent oxidation pathway of Sn is identified and this is suppressed with the aid of H3PO2. This strategy prevents the oxidation of the constituent precursors, through both its moderate reducing properties and through its forming complexes with the perovskite that increase the energetic barrier toward Sn oxidation. The H3PO2 additionally seeds crystal growth during film formation, improving film quality. PeLEDs are reported with an EQE of 0.3% and a brightness of 70 cd m−2; this is the record among reported red‐emitting, lead‐free PeLEDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stacking solar cells with decreasing band gaps to form tandems presents the possibility of overcoming the single-junction Shockley-Queisser limit in photovoltaics. The rapid development of solution-processed perovskites has brought perovskite single-junction efficiencies >20%. However, this process has yet to enable monolithic integration with industry-relevant textured crystalline silicon solar cells. We report tandems that combine solution-processed micrometer-thick perovskite top cells with fully textured silicon heterojunction bottom cells. To overcome the charge-collection challenges in micrometer-thick perovskites, we enhanced threefold the depletion width at the bases of silicon pyramids. Moreover, by anchoring a self-limiting passivant (1-butanethiol) on the perovskite surfaces, we enhanced the diffusion length and further suppressed phase segregation. These combined enhancements enabled an independently certified power conversion efficiency of 25.7% for perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. These devices exhibited negligible performance loss after a 400-hour thermal stability test at 85°C and also after 400 hours under maximum power point tracking at 40°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perovskite nanocrystals exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and tunable bandgaps from ultraviolet to infrared. However, blue perovskite light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) suffer from color instability under applied bias. Developing narrow‐bandwidth deep‐blue emitters will maximize the color gamut of display technologies. Mixed anion approaches suffer from halide segregation that leads to their spectral instability. Here instead, a mixed cation strategy is employed whereby Rb+ is directly incorporated during synthesis into CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Blue‐emitting perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with stable photoluminescence, PLQYs greater than 60%, tunable emission from 460 to 500 nm, and narrow emission linewidths (<25 nm) are reported. The strategy retains a pure bromine crystal structure resulting in color‐pure stable electroluminescence at operating voltages of up to 10 V, peak external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 0.87% and 0.11% for sky‐blue (490 nm), and deep‐blue (464 nm) devices. The sky‐blue devices exhibit the highest combined luminance of 93 cd m−2 at an EQE of 0.75%, the best reported to date of perovskite QD LEDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
