Multiphase machines with symmetrical windings offer various stator winding configurations (SWCs). It is known that, for a given five‐phase machine, the pentagon SWC implies, compared with star, smaller voltage rating and greater current rating of the converter. For healthy conditions, the stator copper loss (SCL) and maximum achievable torque (MAT) are almost identical for both SWCs, provided such converter‐rating adjustments and negligible circulating currents. Regarding the operation of five‐phase machines under open converter leg (especially common fault), the pentagon SWC attains lower SCL (for given torque) and larger MAT than star. However, it is unknown if these characteristics hold (and to which extent) for other phase numbers and SWCs. This study compares for multiple phase numbers the SWCs in terms of converter rating, MAT and SCL, under healthy operation and with an open converter leg. Most importantly, it is shown that, for phase numbers higher than five (the case previously studied), the improvement in performance (especially postfault MAT) by resorting to SWCs other than star can be much larger than for five phases, and it is thus of considerable interest. This paper presents a novel approach in the tuning of phase-locked loops (PLLs) for power electronic converters. PLLs are implemented inside a higher level controller to estimate the grid-voltage phase angle and then control the energy transfer between the power converter and the ac mains. The tuning of the PLL is not a trivial task, particularly when considering power-quality phenomena. In a general way, PLLs with a low bandwidth (low-gain PLLs) are required when handling distorted voltages. It is analytically demonstrated in this paper that low-gain PLLs have more tradeoffs than high-gain PLLs (e.g., PLLs for communications); it is not possible to optimize the settling time for a phase jump without making slower the PLL response to frequency variations. Existing tuning methods do not take into account low-gain features, which may result in nonoptimum designs. The proposed PLL tuning methodology is based on inspection of frequency-domain diagrams and, contrary to the other existing tuning methods, takes into account "low-gain" dynamics. It assures an optimized performance in the presence of any kind of disturbances in the grid. From a practical point of view, the proposed tuning procedure is very intuitive for controller designs. Some significant design examples and experimental results, obtained from a discrete implementation (dSpace platform), are provided in order to validate the theoretical approaches. Selective harmonic cancellation has become of primary importance in a wide range of power electronics applications, for example, uninterrupted power systems, regenerative converters, and active power filters (APFs). In such applications, the primary objectives are an accurate cancellation of selected harmonics and a quick speed of response under transients. This paper provides a novel signal-processing algorithm for selective harmonic identification based on heterodyning, moving average finite-impulse response filters, and phase-locked loop (PLL). The algorithm is applied over the current of a nonlinear load in the feedforward-based control of an APF. The PLL tracks the phase and frequency of the fundamental component. Then, the fundamental phase is multiplied by the order of the selected harmonic, and two random unitary orthogonal "axis waves" are generated. These unitary waves, rotating at the harmonic frequency, are multiplied by the input load current, thereby "moving" the Fourier series coefficients of the selected harmonic to dc (heterodyning). Moving average FIR filters are used to filter the harmonics generated in the heterodyning process from the dc signal; moving average FIR filters are very suitable for most of the power quality applications, thanks to their "comb-type" frequency response and their quick transient response. Experimental results confirm good performance for steady-state harmonic cancellation and an optimal system response to load transients. This paper presents a new open-loop architecture for three-phase grid synchronization based on moving average and predictive filters, where accurate measurements of phase, frequency, and amplitude are carried out in real time. Previous works establish that the fundamental positive sequence vector of a set of utility voltage/current vectors can be decoupled using Park's transformation and low-pass filters. However, the filtering process introduces delays that impair the system performance. More specifically, when the input signal frequency is shifted above the nominal, a nonzero average steady-state phase error appears in the measurements. To overcome such limitations, a suitable combination of predictive and moving average finite impulse response (FIR) filters is used by the authors to achieve a robust synchronization system for all input frequencies. Moving average filters are linear phase FIR filters that have a constant time delay at low frequencies, a characteristic that is exploited to good effect to design a predictive filter that compensates such time delays, enabling zero steady-state phase errors for shifted input frequencies. In summary, the main attributes of the new system are its good frequency adaptation, good filtering/transient response tradeoff, and the fact that its dynamics is independent of the input vector amplitude. Voltage control of standalone converters with LC filter is usually based on proportional-resonant or proportional-integral controllers, which often require further active damping methods to achieve stability. These solutions place design constraints in the selection of the closed-loop pole locations which limit the achievable bandwidth and increase the design complexity. In contrast, in state-space based controllers, the closed-loop poles can be placed freely through state feedback, which makes them particularly suitable for high order plants and/or low sampling frequencies. Among the modern control methods, direct pole placement is a simple technique that enables the establishment of a straightforward relationship between outcome and design, as opposed to more advanced approaches. This paper presents a discrete state-space voltage controller for standalone converters with LC output filter. The proposed method combines the direct pole placement technique with a virtual disturbance observer in order to compensate the effects produced by the load and model mismatches. The design process takes into account both the filter parameters and the sampling frequency, rendering the performance of the obtained controller independent of both. The result is a streamlined design procedure that leads to consistent outcomes for a wide range of plant parameter variations, requiring only one input: the desired closed-loop bandwidth. Multiphase induction machines (IMs) are gaining increasing interest in industry due to their numerous advantages over the conventional three-phase ones. A lot of different parameter estimation methods have been developed for three-phase IMs, but the existing literature regarding specific identification techniques for multiphase IMs is almost nonexistent at this point. This paper proposes simple offline methods to estimate the stator resistance and stator leakage inductance of multiphase IMs with distributed windings, under different conditions, utilizing the machine’s degrees of freedom associated with the nonflux/torque producing current components. Once these parameters are identified, the rotor ones can be easily calculated by combination with the total values obtained from locked-rotor tests. The procedure enables segregation of the stator and rotor parameters in a simple manner, something that is very difficult to achieve in three-phase IMs where, usually, equality of leakage inductances and a constant stator resistance are assumed. In this manner, the magnetizing inductance can be then also more accurately assessed from no-load tests, because the error in its estimation that would be caused by assuming both leakage inductances to be equal is avoided. Resonant controllers have gained significant importance in recent years in multiple applications. Because of their high selectivity, their performance is very dependent on the accuracy of the resonant frequency. An exhaustive study about different discrete-time implementations is contributed in this paper. Some methods, such as the popular ones based on two integrators, cause that the resonant peaks differ from expected. Such inaccuracies result in significant loss of performance, especially for tracking high-frequency signals, since infinite gain at the expected frequency is not achieved, and therefore, zero steady-state error is not assured. Other discretization techniques are demonstrated to be more reliable. The effect on zeros is also analyzed, establishing the influence of each method on the stability. Finally, the study is extended to the discretization of the schemes with delay compensation, which is also proved to be of great importance in relation with their performance. A single-phase active power filter laboratory prototype has been implemented and tested. Experimental results provide a real-time comparison among discretization strategies, which validate the theoretical analysis. Multilevel converters can meet the increasing demand of power ratings and power quality associated with reduced harmonic distortion and lower electromagnetic interference. When the number of levels increases, it is necessary to control more and more switches in parallel. Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), with their concurrent processing capability, are suitable for the implementation of multilevel modulation algorithms. Among them, space vector pulsewidth modulation algorithms offer great flexibility to optimize switching waveforms and are well suited for digital implementation. In this paper, two algorithms, 2-D and 3-D, are analyzed and implemented in an FPGA. In order to carry out the implementation, both algorithms have been described in very high speed integrated circuit hardware description language, partly hand coded, and partly automatically generated using the System Generator tool. Both implementations are compared in terms of implementation complexity and logic resources required. Finally, test results with a neutral-point-clamped inverter are presented. This paper presents a new high-efficient three-phase brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM) based on a sub-harmonic field excitation technique. In the proposed machine topology, the stator is equipped with two different three-phase windings: (1) main armature winding, and (2) additional armature winding. The main armature winding is based on a 4-pole winding configuration, whereas the additional armature winding is based on a 2-pole winding configuration. Both windings are supplied current from two different inverters, i.e., inverter-1, inverter-2, and simultaneously. Inverter-1 provides the regular input current to the main armature winding, whereas inverter-2 provides a three-phase current of low magnitude to the 2-pole additional armature winding. This generates an additional sub-harmonic component of MMF in the airgap beside the fundamental MMF. On the other side, the rotor is equipped with (1) harmonic, and (2) field windings. These windings are electrically coupled via a rectifier. The fundamental component of MMF produces the main rotating magnetic field, whereas the sub-harmonic MMF gets induced in the harmonic winding to produce harmonic current. This current is rectified to give DC to the rotor field winding to attain brushless operation. To authenticate the operation and analyze its performance, the proposed BL-WRSM topology is supported using 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) in JMAG-Designer. Later on, the performance of the proposed brushless topology is compared with the customary BL-WRSM topology to verify its high efficiency, high output torque, low torque ripple, and low unbalanced radial force on the rotor. The increasing number of distributed power generation systems (DPGSs) is changing the traditional organization of the electrical network. An important part of these DPGSs is based on renewable energy sources. In order to guarantee an efficient integration of renewable-based generation units, grid codes must be fulfilled. Their most demanding requirements, such as low-voltage ride-through and grid support, need a really fast transient response of the power electronics devices. In this manner, the current controller speed is a key point. This paper proposes a methodology to assess and optimize the transient response of proportional-resonant current controllers. The proposed methodology is based on the study of the error signal transfer function roots by means of pole–zero plots. Optimal gains are set to achieve fast and nonoscillating transient responses, i.e., to optimize the settling time. It is proved that optimal gain selection results from a tradeoff between transients caused by reference changes and transients caused by changes at the point of common coupling. Experimental results obtained by means of a three-phase voltage source converter prototype validate the approach. Short transient times are achieved even when tests emulate very demanding realistic conditions: a +90^\circ phase-angle jump in the current reference and a “type C” voltage sag at the point of common coupling. The following two types of resonant controllers are mainly employed to obtain high performance in voltage-source converters: 1) proportional + resonant (PR) and 2) vector proportional + integral (VPI). The analysis and design of PR controllers is usually performed by Bode diagrams and phase-margin criterion. However, this approach presents some limitations when resonant frequencies are higher than the crossover frequency defined by the proportional gain. This condition occurs in selective harmonic control and applications with high reference frequency with respect to the switching frequency, e.g., high-power converters with a low switching frequency. In such cases, additional 0-dB crossings (phase margins) appear; therefore, the usual methods for simple systems are no longer valid. In addition, VPI controllers always present multiple 0-dB crossings in their frequency response. In this paper, the proximity to the instability of PR and VPI controllers is evaluated and optimized through Nyquist diagrams. A systematic method is proposed to obtain the highest stability and avoidance of closed-loop anomalous peaks: it is achieved by the minimization of the inverse of the Nyquist trajectory distance to the critical point, i.e., the sensitivity function. Finally, several experimental tests, including an active power filter that operates at a low switching frequency and compensates harmonics up to the Nyquist frequency, validate the theoretical approach. The multilevel multiphase technology combines the benefits of multilevel converters and multiphase machines. Recently, a new multilevel multiphase space vector pulsewidth modulation algorithm that is valid for any number of levels and phases was developed. In this paper, a generic digital VHDL module for such an algorithm is presented. This module is parameterizable in relation to the number of levels, the number of phases, and the number of bits of fractional part of the reference vector. It is also technology independent, reusable, and modular. This circuit has been tested by implementation in a field-programmable gate array, with the goal of a balance of speed and area optimization. This paper presents an optimized digital implementation of phase locked loops (PLLs) for grid applications suitable for implementation in low-cost industrial devices. A robust PLL is crucial in most of power converter applications, particularly in distorted environments. That is, the phase estimation should not be affected by power quality phenomena, given by Standard EN 50160, such as harmonics, imbalance, line notching, and voltage sags. The PLL dynamics is optimized as follows. A notch filter inside the loop is implemented to enhance the steady-state filtering. The bandwidth is maximized to get a fast postfault retracking (transient response). As justified in this paper, this approach is very suitable for both single- and three-phase PLLs. A low-resource-consuming implementation of the digitally controlled oscillator is provided: A digital model based on an RC electronic oscillator implements the needed trigonometric functions. This reduces the needed digital resources without reducing the performance. The proposed PLLs have been implemented and tested in a fixed-point DSP TI TMS320LF2407. These PLLs have been tested using different distorted inputs. Experimental results show that fast and rippleless phase estimations are achieved by the proposed implementations. In the practical design of a transmission cable, the characteristic impedance and the number of twists per meter in twisted cables are variables that are dependent on imperative conditions, with the disadvantage that these variables are strongly depending to each other. Cable manufacturing companies aim to provide customers' products with very well known physical characteristics. For this reason, a methodology to achieve accurate design of twisted pair cables based on the geometry of wires, before going to the manufacturing process is very desirable. In a previous paper, the deformations and irregularities that can occur in the twisted pair during the manufacturing process and their effects on the geometry of the twisted pair were studied by the authors. This paper describes an improved model for estimating the characteristic impedance of a twisted pair that allows an accurate electrical design. Two methods for a fast design of a cable, in agreement with the demanded specifications (characteristic impedance or number of twists per meter) are developed. Furthermore, a software program that automates all necessary calculations has been made. Thanks to the improved model, the design and production of a cable can be done faster, without the need of a big set of production samples. Results showed in this paper are a part of a larger research project carried out in association with the research and development department of a cable manufacturing company, and these results are being applied into the design department of this company. Resonant controllers are one of the highest performance alternatives for ac current/voltage control. The implementations based on two integrators are widely employed to achieve frequency adaptation without substantial computational burden. However, the discretization of these schemes causes a significant error both in the resonant frequency and in the phase lead provided by the delay compensation. Therefore, perfect tracking is not assured, and stability may be compromised. This paper proposes solutions for both problems without adding a significant resource consumption by correction of the roots placement. A simple expression to calculate the target leading angle, in delay compensation schemes, is also proposed to improve stability margins by means of a better accuracy than previous approaches. A multilevel multiphase space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) algorithm has been introduced recently, in which the reference is separated into an integer part and a fractional part. The fractional part is, in essence, a two-level multiphase space vector algorithm. This paper shows that, with appropriate adaptations, the fractional part of the general space vector multilevel multiphase PWM can be applied as a stand-alone PWM method in conjunction with two-level voltage-source converters with any number of phases. Simulation results of the five- and six-phase cases are shown, and the new algorithm is compared with another recent multifrequency SVPWM algorithm, which follows the standard approach of selecting the switching vectors and calculating their application times using dq planes. The experimental verification is provided using a five-phase two-motor series-connected induction motor drive, supplied from a custom-designed five-phase voltage-source inverter. This paper proposes an advanced controller suitable for three-phase phase-locked loops (PLLs), which are employed in grid-connected power converters. This controller is formed of one or more lead compensators cascaded to the main proportional integral regulator. The proposed lead compensators are second order with pure imaginary roots: they have both a notch peak and a resonant peak (the notch frequency is lower than the resonant frequency). Hence, their phase versus frequency response exhibits phase wraps of \pm180^\circ. Consequently, the parameters of each lead compensator are tuned with two objectives: to eliminate a specific frequency in the synchronous reference frame (SRF) and to enhance stability by a phase lead (phase boost). Through this technique, three-phase PLLs achieve both high bandwidth (fast transient response) and selective cancellation (filtering of unbalance and harmonics ripple in the SRF). The proposed controllers are suitable for simpler three-phase PLL schemes, such as the SRF-PLL. Therefore, big improvement is achieved without adding extra blocks and signals to basic PLL structures. Simulation and real-time implementation (dSpace DS1103) tests, emulating very demanding realistic conditions, have been performed. For low-power grid-connected applications, a singlephase converter can be used. In photovoltaic (PV) applications, it is possible to remove the transformer in the inverter to reduce losses, costs, and size. Galvanic connection of the grid and the dc sources in transformerless systems can introduce additional ground currents due to the ground parasitic capacitance. These currents increase conducted and radiated electromagnetic emissions, harmonics injected in the utility grid, and losses. Amplitude and spectrum of the ground current depend on the converter topology, the switching strategy, and the resonant circuit formed by the ground capacitance, the converter, the ac filter, and the grid. In this paper, the ground current in a 1.5-kW PV installation is measured under different conditions and used to build a simulation model. The installation includes a string of 16 PV panel, a full-bridge inverter, and an LCL filter. This paper proposes a novel brushless excitation topology for a three-phase synchronous machine based on a customary current-controlled voltage source inverter (VSI). The inverter employs a simple hysteresis-controller-based current control scheme that enables it to inject a three-phase armature current to the stator winding which contains a dc offset. This dc offset generates an additional air gap magneto-motive force (MMF). On the rotor side, an additional harmonic winding is mounted to harness the harmonic power from the air gap flux. Since a third harmonic flux is generated in this type of topology, the machine structure is also modified to accommodate the third harmonic rotor winding to have a voltage induced as the rotor rotates at synchronous speed. Specifically, four-pole armature and field winding patterns are used, whereas the harmonic winding is configured for a twelve-pole pattern. A diode rectifier is also mounted on the rotor between the harmonic and field windings. Therefore, the generated voltage on the harmonic winding feeds the current to the field winding for excitation. A 2D-finite element analysis (FEA) in JMAG-Designer was carried out for performance evaluation and verification of the topology. The simulation results are consistent with the proposed theory.
