This paper sketches elements of a theory of the ethics of autonomised harming: the phenomenon of delegating decisions about whether and whom to harm to artificial intelligence (AI) in self-driving cars and autonomous weapon systems. First, the paper elucidates the challenge of integrating non-human, artificial agents, which lack rights and duties, into our moral framework which relies on precisely these notions to determine the permissibility of harming. Second, the paper examines how potential differences between human agents and non-human, artificial agents might bear on the permissibility of delegating life-and death decisions to AI systems. Third, and finally, the paper explores a series of resulting complexities. These include the challenge of weighing autonomous systems' promise to reduce harm against the intrinsic value of rectificatory justice as well as the peculiar possibility that delegating harmful acts to AI might render ordinarily impermissible acts permissible. By illuminating what happens when we extend normative theory beyond its traditional boundaries, this discussion offers a starting point for assessing the moral permissibility of delegating consequential decisions to non-human, artificial agents. The free energy cost of forming a cavity in a solvent is a fundamental concept in rationalizing the solvation of molecules and ions. A detailed understanding of the factors governing cavity formation in bulk solutions has inter alia enabled the formulation of models that account for this contribution in coarse-grained implicit solvation methods. Here, we employ classical molecular dynamics simulations and multistate Bennett acceptance ratio free energy sampling to systematically study cavity formation at a wide range of metal–water interfaces. We demonstrate that the obtained size- and position-dependence of cavitation energies can be fully rationalized by a geometric Gibbs model, which considers that the creation of the metal–cavity interface necessarily involves the removal of interfacial solvent. This so-called competitive adsorption effect introduces a substrate dependence to the interfacial cavity formation energy that is missed in existing bulk cavitation models. Using expressions from scaled particle theory, this substrate dependence is quantitatively reproduced by the Gibbs model through simple linear relations with the adsorption energy of a single water molecule. Besides providing a better general understanding of interfacial solvation, this paves the way for the derivation and efficient parametrization of more accurate interface-aware implicit solvation models needed for reliable high-throughput calculations toward improved electrocatalysts. Background: Individuals with a history of childhood neglect may be vulnerable to develop depression, as they may more often use avoidant strategies to cope with the stressors. This study examined (1) whether a history of childhood neglect was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms and (2) whether avoidant coping behaviors mediated this association. Methods: In total, N = 2245 German adults (mean age = 41.1 years, age range = 18–82 years, 70.2% female) were recruited from the general population between June and September 2020 during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Childhood neglect (Adverse Childhood Experience Questionnaire [ACE]), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ‐9]), and three avoidant coping behaviors (substance use, behavioral disengagement, and self‐blame; Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced [COPE]) were assessed. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we examined the direct pathway from childhood neglect to depressive symptoms in a simultaneous parallel multiple mediation model and the possible mediating paths of avoidant coping behaviors. Results: Childhood neglect was positively and significantly associated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.24, p < 0.01) while controlling for the presence of childhood abuse. The three avoidant coping behaviors significantly mediated this association (substance use: bias‐corrected 95% confidence intervals [BC 95% CI], 0.02, 0.05; behavioral disengagement: BC 95% CI, 0.04, 0.12; and self‐blame: BC 95% CI, 0.16, 0.19). Post hoc contrasts between the mediators showed that self‐blame had a significantly stronger indirect effect than substance use (BC 95% CI, −0.12, −0.01). Conclusions: This study provides evidence that avoidant coping behaviors mediate the association between childhood neglect and depressive symptoms in adults. This article contributes to the emerging literature on decolonial research capacity-sharing (the process of strengthening individual/organisational capacity to shape research agendas, assess, design, produce, disseminate, and apply evidence). It provides a discussion of a participatory research capacity-sharing initiative led by Joint Learning Initiative on Faith and Local Communities (JLI), which was aimed at practitioners, activists, and researchers, with valuable experience as professionals and activists but little to no prior research experience, from various parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. While existing literature (including publications on decolonial research capacity-sharing) often assumes that research capacity-sharing is led by and aimed at academics, our article reflects on the question of how decolonial research capacity-sharing can be implemented in interventions led by and aimed at non-academics. It therefore makes an important contribution to existing literature on research capacity-sharing, pointing to the important role practitioners, activists, and community members can play, especially in interventions informed by decolonial principles. We have previously shown that imatinib has adverse effects on developing testis, and imatinib‐treated male patients have been reported to have reduced sperm counts. However, the cellular level effects of imatinib and dasatinib on adult male germ cells and germline stem cells (mGSCs) have not been thoroughly investigated.To analyze whether imatinib or dasatinib exposure ex vivo and in vitro is harmful to adult male rodent germ cells and mGSCs.Seminiferous tubule segments of adult male mouse or rat were cultured in the presence or the absence of imatinib or dasatinib. Stage‐specific effects were monitored by 3H‐thymidine incorporation assay (DNA synthesis), immunohistochemistry (cleaved Caspase‐3; apoptosis), immunofluorescence (KI67, GFRα1, STRA8, c‐KIT, LIN28A; proliferation and spermatogonial differentiation) and flow cytometry (Hoechst). Mouse mGSCs were exposed to imatinib and dasatinib to study proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation.Imatinib decreased stage‐specific DNA synthesis, and induced apoptosis in cultured rat seminiferous tubule segments. Imatinib also had an adverse effect on mGSC proliferation both in vitro and ex vivo, but did not induce cell death in cultured mGSCs. Imatinib did not impinge on induction of spermatogonial differentiation but suppressed c‐KIT expression in nascent differentiating spermatogonia, providing a plausible mechanism for its pro‐apoptotic function in spermatogenic cells. Clinically relevant doses of dasatinib did not induce apoptosis in seminiferous tubules but decreased mGSC colony growth in vitro.Imatinib exposure ex vivo and in vitro impinges on male rodent germ cell proliferation and survival. The plausible mechanism in spermatogenic cells is the inhibition of SCF/c‐KIT signaling, and reduced expression of c‐KIT. In the light of sustainability, the nearly forgotten control of relative humidity (RH) in display cases with saturated salt solutions is re-evaluated. Spilling and creeping of salts can be avoided. By choosing magnesium nitrate or potassium carbonate, the temperature dependence of the RH and the emission of harmful gases are negligible. Measurements with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors showed such solutions to be excellent absorbers for corrosive pollutants such as acids and aldehydes, especially the alkaline potassium carbonate (hitherto not used in museums). The practical application of such solutions in display cases is currently being tested in a community science project in a number of museums. This will result in improved guidelines for conservators and it is hoped, in a revival of this passive, failsafe, low-carbon footprint technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and radar technology have benefitted from breakthroughs in recent decades. Both technologies have found applications independently of each other, but together, they also unlock new possibilities, especially for remote sensing applications. One of the key factors for a remote sensing system is the estimation of the flight attitude. Despite the advancements, accurate attitude estimation remains a significant challenge, particularly due to the limitations of a conventional Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Because these sensors may suffer from issues such as drifting, additional effort is required to obtain a stable attitude. Against that background, this study introduces a novel methodology for making an attitude estimation using radar data. Herein, we present a drone measurement system and detail its calculation process. We also demonstrate our results using three flight scenarios and outline the limitations of the approach. The results show that the roll and pitch angles can be calculated using the radar data, and we conclude that the findings of this research will help to improve the flight attitude estimation of remote sensing flights with a radar sensor. This paper illuminates a typically obscured ground for rectificatory obligations: harms justified as 'lesser evils.' Lesser-evil harms are not the result of overall morally prohibited acts but of acts permissibly carried out to prevent significantly greater harm. The paper argues that harms caused as unintended side effects of acting on lesser-evil justifications, notably in military rescue operations, may give rise to claims to compensation, even if (1) the military acts that caused the harms in question were justified on lesser-evil grounds and (2) the victims in question are no worse off as a result; they may even owe their survival to the act of rescue. The paper defends three claims. First, being better off as a result of a harmful rescue than one would otherwise have been does not preclude claims to be compensated for harms suffered as a side effect. Second, identifying the relevant counterfactual for purposes of compensatory justice is sometimes a prescriptive, rather than a descriptive, matter. Rather than relying on empirical speculations about what would have happened had a harm not occurred, we must, in certain cases, consider what agents ought to have done. Finally, duties of compensation need not fall on those who caused the to-be-compensated harms. That infringing rights is permissible in certain cases does not imply that no compensation is owed, but merely that it is not necessarily rights-infringers on whom duties of compensation fall. The article focuses on the necessity requirement in defensive actions involving multiple agents, examining how permissions to inflict harm are determined by minimizing overall harm. Topics include the comparison between agent-centered and target-centered conceptions of necessity, the impact of multiple agents' options on permissible harm, and how uncertainty affects the application of necessity in real-world situations.

Filamentous pathogens that cause plant diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, anthracnose, and late blight continue to represent an enormous challenge for farmers worldwide. Interestingly, these pathogens, although phylogenetically distant, initiate pathogenesis in a very similar way by penetrating the cell wall and establishing a feeding structure inside the plant host cell. To prevent pathogen ingress, the host cell responds by forming defence structures known as papillae and encasements that are thought to mediate pre- and post-invasive immunity, respectively. This form of defence is evolutionarily conserved in land plants and is highly effective and durable against a broad selection of non-adapted filamentous pathogens. As most pathogens have evolved strategies to overcome the defences of only a limited range of host plants, the papilla/encasement response could hold the potential to become an optimal transfer of resistance from one plant species to another. In this review I lay out current knowledge of the involvement of membrane trafficking that forms these important defence structures and highlight some of the questions that still need to be resolved. This article contributes to the growing literature on researcher reflexivity by broaching the often-ignored issue of religious positionalities within political science, as well as speaking to the methodological implications of researching religion more broadly. We present and compare two autoethnographic case studies of research on politico-religious conflict in Vietnam and Lebanon, exploring how a researcher's religiosity presents unique fieldwork challenges, opportunities and insights. We then discuss the ambivalence faced by religious researchers within the highly secularised academic environment, thus blurring the artificial dichotomy between 'the field' and the academy. Our reflections centre around three findings: (1) the importance of taking an intersectional approach which neither essentialises nor ignores religious aspects of positionality, whilst also being sensitive to spatial and temporal shifts in how they interact with a researcher's gender, ethnicity, class and other identifiers; (2) the opportunities and perils of a researcher's apparent religious common ground with participants (or lack thereof) in building rapport and negotiating a degree of insider status; and (3) the similarities and differences between suspicions of religious partialism during fieldwork and within academia. Coping with distracting inputs during goal‐directed behavior is a common challenge, especially when stopping ongoing responses. The neural basis for this remains debated. Our study explores this using a conflict‐modulation Stop Signal task, integrating group independent component analysis (group‐ICA), multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), and EEG source localization analysis. Consistent with previous findings, we show that stopping performance is better in congruent (nonconflicting) trials than in incongruent (conflicting) trials. Conflict effects in incongruent trials compromise stopping more due to the need for the reconfiguration of stimulus–response (S–R) mappings. These cognitive dynamics are reflected by four independent neural activity patterns (ICA), each coding representational content (MVPA). It is shown that each component was equally important in predicting behavioral outcomes. The data support an emerging idea that perception‐action integration in action‐stopping involves multiple independent neural activity patterns. One pattern relates to the precuneus (BA 7) and is involved in attention and early S–R processes. Of note, three other independent neural activity patterns were associated with the insular cortex (BA13) in distinct time windows. These patterns reflect a role in early attentional selection but also show the reiterated processing of representational content relevant for stopping in different S–R mapping contexts. Moreover, the insular cortex's role in automatic versus complex response selection in relation to stopping processes is shown. Overall, the insular cortex is depicted as a brain hub, crucial for response selection and cancellation across both straightforward (automatic) and complex (conditional) S–R mappings, providing a neural basis for general cognitive accounts on action control. An accurate atomistic treatment of aqueous solid–liquid interfaces necessitates the explicit description of interfacial water ideally via ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Many applications, however, still rely on static interfacial water models, e.g., for the computation of (electro)chemical reaction barriers and focus on a single, prototypical structure. In this work, we systematically study the relation between density functional theory-derived static and dynamic interfacial water models with specific focus on the water–Pt(111) interface. We first introduce a general construction protocol for static 2D water layers on any substrate, which we apply to the low index surfaces of Pt. Subsequently, we compare these with structures from a broad selection of reference works based on the Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions descriptor. The analysis reveals some structural overlap between static and dynamic water ensembles; however, static structures tend to overemphasize the in-plane hydrogen bonding network. This feature is especially pronounced for the widely used low-temperature hexagonal ice-like structure. In addition, a complex relation between structure, work function, and adsorption energy is observed, which suggests that the concentration on single, static water models might introduce systematic biases that are likely reduced by averaging over consistently created structural ensembles, as introduced here. Background: The adverse events (AEs) after a Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) Pfizer-Biotech mRNA vaccination present a medical and epidemiological issue of increasing interest. Headache is the most frequent neurological adverse effect and generally the third most common adverse event after a Covid-19 vaccination, but only a few studies focus on the link between headache and other AEs after vaccination. This study aims to investigate the correlation between headaches and Covid-19 vaccination, as well as the possible links between headaches and other AEs after Covid-19 vaccination, thereby helping the management of AEs and avoiding further occurrences. Methods: This study is based on a published questionnaire survey of 1,402 healthcare workers. Our study focused on the 5 questions including 12 AEs and headaches extracted from the questionnaire post the first and second Covid-19 vaccination. The severity of the 12 AEs and headaches could be classified by the participants on a five-step scale: "Not at all", "Little", "Average", "Quite", and "Very" (abbreviated as "N", "L", "A", "Q", "V"). We used the Bowker test to study the comparison of headache severity, indicated on a 5-point Likert scale between the first and second vaccinations. We applied an ordinal logistic regression to the 5 categories with headache severity serving as the dependent variable and the ratings of the other 12 AEs serving as the independent variable to further explore to what extent the severity of the 12 AEs is associated with the severity of headaches. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to evaluate the predictive value of the ratings of the 12 AEs to headache severity. Results: We found that participants rated their headaches as more severe after the second vaccination, and participants who reported experiencing fatigue, flu-like symptoms, pain at the injection site, known tension-type headache, fever, dizziness/balance problems and known migraine are associated with headache symptoms. Conclusions: There are clusters of headache-associated AEs post Covid-19 vaccination. The association of various AEs with headaches may be due to similar causative mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Traditionally, individuals with chronically disordered sleep are referred to a sleep specialist, who would usually arrange diagnostic investigations including polygraphy and/or polysomnography (PSG). Dr. Sleep (DREEP) is a browser-based application developed for diagnosing common chronic sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), periodic leg movements (PLMD), and insomnia in adults. The DREEP algorithm is based on disease-specific questions adapted from validated sleep questionnaires. This study evaluated the preliminary performance of DREEP for the diagnosis and severity assessment of sleep disorders in adults with chronically disordered sleep. Methods: Sixty-four individuals admitted to the sleep laboratory of the Department of Sleep Medicine at the University of Essen, Germany, were recruited. Medical sleep history was taken by a sleep specialist. Each participant underwent full-night PSG and used the DREEP application on a tablet in the evening of admission or the morning after diagnostic sleep testing. Results: DREEP predicted OSA with a sensitivity of 97%, but specificity was low at 25% (it had a tendency to overestimate OSA). DREEP had sensitivity of 79.2% and specificity of 80% for detecting PLMD/restless legs syndrome (RLS). The application showed the best performance for detection of insomnia (sensitivity 90%, specificity 83%), and successfully detected one individual with clinically confirmed narcolepsy. Conclusion: This initial validation study has shown that the browser-based application DREEP is adequately able to assess risk and improve the pre-test probability for prescribing further tests in individuals with common chronic sleep disorders, including OSA, PLMD/RLS, and insomnia. In addition, DREEP was able to correctly identify most individuals without these conditions despite a tendency to overestimate. It highlights the importance of studying exocytosis in plant cells, which is often overlooked compared to endocytosis. The article explores the regulation and spatial control of exocytosis, the role of formins and ROP guanine exchange factors in membrane dynamics, the organization of the secretory pathway for cell wall remodeling, the involvement of RHO/RAC/ROP GTPases in cell wall defense, and the secretion of small proteins in plants. The COVID‐19 pandemic placed preexisting racial health disparities in stark relief. Recent studies have already established that, among prejudiced Whites, exposure to such racial disparities reduced concern about the pandemic and support for mitigation policies (Harrel & Lieberman, 2021; Stephens‐Dougan, 2022). In response to such results, one cautionary line of reasoning argues that communicating the disparity figures without explanatory context can perpetuate (or at least not undermine) myths that African Americans are more likely to contract COVID‐19 due to genetic predispositions or maladaptive behavioral tendencies (Chowkwanyun & Reed, 2020). In two studies, we test the claims that (a) explanatory context mitigates the tendency to attribute racial disparities to essential racial differences and (b) that perceptions of racial disparities are attuned to specific racial inequalities in the U.S., and not merely expressions of outgroup bias. In Study 1, we found that exposure to racial disparities with explanatory context (vs. without explanatory context) did not reduce racial essentialism or stereotyping, but did promote support for healthcare equity. In Study 2, we found that black disadvantage frames (vs. white vs. Hispanic) uniquely promoted support for equitable healthcare and multicultural inclusion. Sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are essential in a number of clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines. The United States (US) has some manufacturing capacity for Li-ion batteries and almost no capacity for producing sintered NdFeB magnets. As a result, the US imports significant quantities of these batteries and magnets. Trade statistics on imported batteries and magnets, however, include only those materials imported in the form of batteries and magnets (referred to here as reported imports) and exclude materials embedded in intermediate and final products such as hard disk drives, electric motors, electric vehicles, and wind turbines (referred to here as embedded imports). This paper develops original estimates of embedded imports of NdFeB magnets and Li-ion batteries, leading to a more complete picture of US imports than looking at reported imports alone. It estimates that more than 90% of NdFeB magnet imports were embedded in intermediate and final products in 2021. Chemotherapy-induced memory loss ("chemobrain") can occur following treatment with the widely used chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX). However, the mechanisms through which DOX induces cognitive dysfunction are not clear, and there are no commercially available therapies for its treatment or prevention. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the therapeutic potential of phenyl-2-aminoethyl selenide (PAESe), an antioxidant drug previously demonstrated to reduce cardiotoxicity associated with DOX treatment, against DOX-induced chemobrain. Four groups of male athymic NCr nude (nu/nu) mice received five weekly tail-vein injections of saline (Control group), 5 mg/kg of DOX (DOX group), 10 mg/kg PAESe (PAESe group), or 5 mg/kg DOX and 10 mg/kg PAESe (DOX+PAESe group). Spatial memory was evaluated using Y-maze and novel object location tasks, while synaptic plasticity was assessed through the measurement of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials from the Schaffer collateral circuit. Western blot analyses were performed to assess hippocampal protein and phosphorylation levels. In this model, DOX impaired synaptic plasticity and memory, and increased phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt) and extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK). Co-administration of PAESe reduced Akt and ERK phosphorylation and ameliorated the synaptic and memory deficits associated with DOX treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Helping behaviour is of special interest for prosociality because it appears to be motivated by the needs of others. We developed a novel paradigm to investigate helping in pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) and tested 75 individuals in eight groups in their home pens. Two identical compartments were attached to the pen, equipped with a window, and a door that could be opened from the outside by lifting a handle. Pigs in all groups spontaneously opened doors during a 5-day familiarization. During testing, each pig was isolated once from its group and placed in one of the two compartments, in a counter-balanced order. In 85% of cases, pigs released a trapped group member from the test compartment within 20 min (median latency = 2.2 min). Pigs were more likely and quicker to open a door to free the trapped pig than to open a door to an empty compartment. Pigs who spent more time looking at the window of the compartment containing the trapped pig were more likely to help. Distress signals by the trapped pig increased its probability of being helped. Responses are consistent with several criteria for identifying targeted helping, but results can also be explained by selfish motivations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article offers an analysis of women's profiles, pathways, and motivations to join the Lebanese civil war (1975 to 1990), with a particular focus on female fighters militants involved with Harakat Amal, Kataeb, the Progressive Socialist Party, Lebanese Communist Party, Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The article contributes to existing debates on women's motivations to join nonstate armed groups by examining both militias that included female fighters and those that did not. The article discusses the ethical implications of supererogatory rescues, particularly in the context of humanitarian interventions. It argues that the supererogatory nature of a rescue, which refers to actions that go beyond what is morally required, does not significantly affect the moral duties and constraints of the rescuers. The author defends the view that rescuers who perform supererogatory rescues are still bound by the same obligations as if the rescue were required.

Introduction: Topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-containing treatments are effective for actinic keratosis (AK); however, they frequently lead to transient local skin reactions (LSRs), which often result in treatment non-adherence. Methods: The aim of this international, phase IV clinical trial was to investigate whether addition of an emollient to topical 4% 5-FU would reduce the frequency and severity of LSRs over 4 weeks of treatment (intervention group) compared with 4% 5-FU alone (control group) in patients with AK. The primary objective was to assess the severity of LSRs (i.e. erythema, flaking/scaling, crusting, swelling, vesiculation/pustulation and erosion/ulceration) at week 4 of treatment (or before, in case of a major local reaction). Key secondary objectives were LSR total scores at weeks 2 and 8, the scores of individual LSR items at each visit, and the proportions of patients with 100% and ≥ 75% AK lesion clearance at week 8. Results: In total, 141 patients were included in the efficacy analysis (71 in the intervention group and 70 in the control group). There were no statistically or clinically significant differences between the treatment groups in terms of LSR total score at week 4 (overall and by subgroups defined by the number of lesions and patient age at baseline), scores of individual LSR items at any time point, and AK lesion clearance rates at week 8. LSR scores with topical 4% 5-FU alone were lower than expected. Skin reactions were the most common treatment-emergent adverse events in both groups, leading to treatment discontinuation in nine patients (12.3%) in the intervention group and seven (9.9%) in the control group. No new safety signals were observed with the addition of an emollient to 4% 5-FU. The Common Table Prayer "Komm, Herr Jesu" or "Come, Lord Jesus" is traditionally prayed before meals in many Lutheran and other Christian households. Many consider it to have first been published in London in 1753 and written by Nicolaus von Zinzendorf, the German religious reformer, missionary, and bishop of the Moravian Church. This paper shows, however, that this is a misattribution: the prayer had appeared in print at least twenty times before 1753. Its earliest known publication was in 1698, before Zinzendorf's birth, in a schoolbook written in Leipzig by Johann Conrad Quensen. He was likely the author of the prayer. The prayer was apparently based on a 1669 aria by Johann Rudolph Ahle whose text had recently been republished in the Wagner Gesangbuch of 1697. But unlike the aria, the prayer was meant to be spoken and to be taught to children. The possible precursors to Ahle's aria show it may have been inspired by the Emmaus or Cana stories. The diffusion of the prayer, initially through schools and then more broadly in society, was rapid and complete; by the mid eighteenth century it was culturally dominant throughout German Protestant lands and was becoming a truly international and ecumenical table prayer. In this article, we take the opportunity to elaborate on some aspects of our article "Squaring the Circle: From Latent Variables to Theory-Based Measurement" (Borgstede & Eggert, 2023) that gave rise to the concerns uttered by Hasselman (2023) and Slaney (2023), and to clarify why we think that theory-based measurement is indeed necessary and sufficient for the establishment of meaningful psychological measurement procedures. Psychometrics builds on the fundamental premise that psychological attributes are unobservable and need to be inferred from observable behavior. Consequently, psychometric procedures consist primarily in applying latent variable modeling, which statistically relates latent variables to manifest variables. However, latent variable modeling falls short of providing a theoretically sound definition of psychological attributes. Whereas in a pragmatic interpretation of latent variable modeling latent variables cannot represent psychological attributes at all, a realist interpretation of latent variable modeling implies that latent variables are empty placeholders for unknown attributes. The authors argue that psychological attributes can only be identified if they are defined within the context of substantive formal theory. Building on the structuralist view of scientific theories, they show that any successful application of such a theory necessarily produces specific values for the theoretical terms that are defined within the theory. The information taken from David A. Scott's book "Copper and Bronze in Art" was crucial for this research on copper corrosion products in Stuttgart. The examples discussed are: (1) the nature and variability of 'Black Spots' (or 'Brown Fuzzies'), mainly copper sulfides, resulting from the action of sulfurous gases on copper containing materials at different relative humidities; (2) cupric hydroxide occurring during maritime corrosion or by cleaning, patination, and pigment synthesis (Bremen blue) when alkaline solutions are used; (3) the wondrous phenomenon of curly malachite, which does not imply any human involvement; (4) chalconatronite formed by the contact of metal to alkaline surface films on soda glass, providing sodium and carbonate ions; (5) the formation of copper formates in contact with glass by the action of electrolytes from the glass hydrolysis and the pollutant formaldehyde reacting to the formate; (6) syntheses and crystal structure determination by powder X-ray diffraction (no single crystals needed) of various basic copper acetates ('verdigris') with the aim to better differentiate between historic production methods. Two different heat treatments have been carried out on similar Mn1−xNi1−xFe2xSi0.95Al0.05 compositions with magnetostructural transitions between hexagonal and orthorhombic crystal structures around room temperature. The samples were analyzed concerning their structural, microstructural, magnetic, and caloric properties. The results show that the introduction of a high-temperature step, before the heat treatment (1073 K/7 days) usually used in the literature for such compounds modifies the microstructure, leading to sharper transitions with shorter transition widths, and stronger latent heat peaks. Magnetic field-assisted calorimetry and vibrating sample magnetometry provide methods to assess the effect of magnetic field on the broad transitions for the sample with x = 0.32 and the sharp transitions seen in the sample with x = 0.31. Response inhibition and the ability to navigate distracting information are both integral parts of cognitive control and are imperative to adaptive behavior in everyday life. Thus far, research has only inconclusively been able to draw inferences regarding the association between response stopping and the effects of interfering information. Using a novel combination of the Simon task and a stop signal task, the current study set out to investigate the behavioral as well as the neurophysiological underpinnings of the relationship between response stopping and interference processing. We tested n  = 27 healthy individuals and combined temporal EEG signal decomposition with source localization methods to delineate the precise neurophysiological dynamics and functional neuroanatomical structures associated with conflict effects on response stopping. The results showed that stopping performance was compromised by conflicts. Importantly, these behavioral effects were reflected by specific aspects of information coded in the neurophysiological signal, indicating that conflict effects during response stopping are not mediated via purely perceptual processes. Rather, it is the processing of specific, stop-relevant stimulus features in the sensory regions during response selection, which underlies the emergence of conflict effects in response stopping. Artificial Intelligence‐based Computer Aided Diagnostics (AI‐CADx) have been proposed to help physicians in reducing misdetection of polyps in colonoscopy examination. The heterogeneity of a polyp's appearance makes detection challenging for physicians and AI‐CADx. Towards building better AI‐CADx, we propose an attention module called Squeeze and Multi‐Context Attention (SMCA) that re‐calibrates a feature map by providing channel and spatial attention by taking into consideration highly activated features and context of the features at multiple receptive fields simultaneously. We test the effectiveness of SMCA by incorporating it into the encoder of five popular segmentation models. We use five public datasets and construct intra‐dataset and inter‐dataset test sets to evaluate the generalizing capability of models with SMCA. Our intra‐dataset evaluation shows that U‐Net with SMCA and without SMCA has a precision of 0.86 ± 0.01 and 0.76 ± 0.02 respectively on CVC‐ClinicDB. Our inter‐dataset evaluation reveals that U‐Net with SMCA and without SMCA has a precision of 0.62 ± 0.01 and 0.55 ± 0.09 respectively when trained on Kvasir‐SEG and tested on CVC‐ColonDB. Similar results are observed using other segmentation models and other public datasets. Earth system science is an interdisciplinary effort to understand the fundamentals and interactions of environmental processes. Interdisciplinary research is challenging since it demands the integration of scientific schemes and practices from different research fields into a collaborative work environment. This paper introduces the framework F4ESS that supports this integration. F4ESS provides methods and technologies that facilitate the development of integrative work environments for Earth system science. F4ESS enables scientists a) to outline structured and summarized descriptions of scientific procedures to facilitate communication and synthesis, b) to combine a large variety of distributed data analysis software into seamless data analysis chains and workflows, c) to visually combine and interactively explore the manifold spatiotemporal data and results to support understanding and knowledge creation. The F4ESS methods and technologies are generic and can be applied in various scientific fields. We discuss F4ESS in the context of the interdisciplinary investigation of flood events. Actinic keratosis is a lesion that develops in sun-exposed areas of the skin and is considered to be a precancerous condition or an early in situ squamous cell carcinoma. Treatment of actinic keratosis is important for reducing skin cancer risk, with treatment choice based on patient-, lesion- and treatment-related considerations. Of the topical treatments used for fielddirected therapy, those containing 5-fluorouracil are among the most effective and widely prescribed. The most recently developed topical 5-fluorouracil preparation (Tolak®; Pierre Fabre, France) contains 4% 5-fluorouracil in an aqueous cream. This narrative review discusses data on 4% 5-fluorouracil cream to treat actinic keratosis, and provides the authors’ expert opinion on issues associated with it use. The effect of the cream has been evaluated in phase 2 and 3 trials of adult patients with actinic keratosis on the face, ears or scalp. These trials included patients with severe baseline disease, defined by high lesion counts and large-size treatment fields, which possibly affected the proportion of patients who were able to achieve complete clearance. Other efficacy parameters (e.g. percentage change in lesion count,≥75% clearance of lesions or clinically significant changes in validated severity scales) should also be assessed to fully evaluate 4% 5-fluorouracil treatment efficacy in these patients. This paper examines what prevents us from legally enforcing the moral imperative of protecting human rights during military operations carried out for distinctly humanitarian purposes. The answer, I argue, lies not in familiar objections to bringing the law into greater congruence with morality, but in international law's indeterminacy regarding the use of force. Preserving stability within the nascent international legal system comes at the cost of a law that eschews the protection of individual rights even in cases in which the protection of human rights is what justifies military action. The tension between state sovereignty and the protection of human rights thus not only generates well-known controversies about the lawfulness of military intervention. It also prevents us from devising laws to protect human rights during wars whose very purpose it is to stop human rights violations. Clinicians have published research and reports on calcium and phosphate solubility within parenteral nutrition (PN) for over 40 years. Foundational empirical laboratory investigation in the 1980s motivated by the prevalence of neonatal rickets and osteomalacia in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) population led to precipitation curves that have guided PN prescribing and compounding. Over subsequent decades, numerous publications have expanded the knowledge of factors influencing calcium and phosphate solubility in formulating optimal and safe PN admixtures. Failure to adhere to known principles has led to serious injury and death. Known solubility curves are derived from empiric analysis of a finite number of conditions and concentrations, whereas custom PN orders vary widely and rarely match the admixture composition in the data set used to derive the published precipitation curves. Various commercial platforms have been developed to aid the pharmacist in assessing the potential for precipitation when evaluating a PN order. Some applications plot the calcium and phosphate concentrations of the prescribed PN against known published graphs most similar to the order, allowing the pharmacist to judge the risk of precipitation. Other approaches use intellectually protected trade secret algorithms to determine calcium and phosphate solubility across a continuum of conditions. This publication reports equations that have been used successfully for over 2 decades in our regional network of NICUs and shared with others to determine safe prescribing limits for calcium and phosphate concentrations using an electronic PN prescribing program. An efficient integration of sensory and motor processes is crucial to goal-directed behavior. Despite this high relevance, and although cognitive theories provide clear conceptual frameworks, the neurobiological basis of these processes remains insufficiently understood. In a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled pharmacological study, we examine the relevance of catecholamines for perception-motor integration processes. Using EEG data, we perform an in-depth analysis of the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms, focusing on sensorimotor integration processes during response inhibition. We show that the catecholaminergic system affects sensorimotor integration during response inhibition by modulating the stability of the representational content. Importantly, catecholamine levels do not affect the stability of all aspects of information processing during sensorimotor integration, but rather—as suggested by cognitive theory—of specific codes in the neurophysiological signal. Particularly fronto-parietal cortical regions are associated with the identified mechanisms. The study shows how cognitive science theory-driven pharmacology can shed light on the neurobiological basis of perception-motor integration and how catecholamines affect specific information codes relevant to cognitive control. Recent advances have placed the pro-inflammatory activity of amyloid β (Aβ) on microglia cells as the focus of research on Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Researchers are confronted with an astonishing spectrum of over 100 different Aβ variants with variable length and chemical modifications. With the exception of Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-40, the biological significance of most peptides for AD is as yet insufficiently understood. We therefore aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the contributions of these neglected Aβ variants to microglia activation. First, the impact of Aβ receptors, signaling cascades, scavenger mechanisms, and genetic variations on the physiological responses towards various Aβ species is described. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of different types of amyloid precursor protein processing for the generation of these Aβ variants in microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons, and highlight how alterations in secondary structures and oligomerization affect Aβ neurotoxicity. In sum, the data indicate that gene polymorphisms in Aβ-driven signaling pathways in combination with the production and activity of different Aβ variants might be crucial factors for the initiation and progression of different forms of AD. This paper examines whether the prospect of compensation may render otherwise disproportionate harms proportionate. It argues that we should reject this possibility. Instead, it distinguishes duties of compensation as a requirement of rectificatory justice from a harm's degree of compensability, and argues that only the latter is relevant to proportionality. On this view, failing to compensate constitutes a distinct wrong, while harms that are not adequately compensable carry extra weight in proportionality calculations. This explains how the prospect of compensation affects permissions to harm, without relying on the dubious assumption that disproportionate harms may be rendered proportionate by future compensation. Introduction: The OPTIPARK study confirmed the effectiveness and safety of opicapone as adjunct therapy to levodopa in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and motor fluctuations under real-world conditions. The aim of this sub-analysis was to evaluate opicapone in the German patient cohort of OPTIPARK in order to provide country-specific data. Methods: OPTIPARK was an open-label, single-arm study conducted in routine clinical practice across Germany and the UK. Patients with PD and motor fluctuations received once-daily opicapone 50 mg for 3 months in addition to levodopa. The primary endpoint was Clinicians' Global Impression of Change (CGI-C). Secondary assessments included Patients' Global Impressions of Change (PGI-C), Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) I–IV, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8), and Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS). This sub-analysis reports outcomes from the German patients only. Results: Overall, 363 (97.6%) of the 372 patients included in the German cohort received ≥1 dose of opicapone and 291 (80.2%) completed the study. Improvements on CGI-C and PGI-C were reported by 70.8% and 76.3% of patients, respectively. UPDRS scores improved for activities of daily living during OFF time by −3.3 ± 4.5 points and motor scores during ON time by −5.3 ± 7.9 points. PDQ-8 and NMSS scores also demonstrated improvements. Treatment emergent adverse events considered at least possibly related to opicapone occurred in 37.7% of patients, with most being of mild or moderate intensity. This study investigates visuospatial memory in patients with unilateral lesions of the temporal lobe and the hippocampus resulting from surgery to treat drug-resistant epilepsy. To detect impairments of visuospatial memory in these individuals, a memory test should be specific to episodic memory, the type of memory in which the hippocampus is crucially involved. However, most known visuospatial memory tests do not focus on episodic memory. We hypothesized that a new sequential visuospatial memory test, which has been previously developed and applied only in healthy subjects, might be suitable to fill this gap. The test requires the subject to reproduce a memorized sequence of target locations in ordered recall by typing on a blank graphics tablet. The length of the memorized sequence extended successively after repeated presentation of a sequence of 20 target positions. The test was done twice on day one and again after one week. Visual working memory was tested with the Corsi block-tapping task. The performance in the new test was also related to the performance of the patients in the standard test battery of the neuropsychological examination in the clinical context. Thirteen patients and 14 controls participated. Patients showed reduced learning speed in the new sequential visuospatial memory task. Right-sided lesions induced stronger impairments than left-sided lesions. After one week, retention was reduced in the patients with left-sided lesions. The performance of the patients in commonly used tests of the neuropsychological standard battery did not differ compared to healthy subjects, whereas the new test allowed discrimination between patients and controls at a high correct-decision rate of 0.89. The Corsi block-span of the patients was slightly shorter than that of the controls. The results suggest that the new test provides a specific investigation of episodic visuospatial memory. Efficient response selection is essential to flexible, goal-directed behavior. Prominent theoretical frameworks such as the Theory of Event Coding and Binding and Retrieval in Action Control have provided insights regarding the dynamics of perception–action integration processes. According to Theory of Event Coding and Binding and Retrieval in Action Control, encoded representations of stimulus–response bindings influence later retrieval processes of these bindings. However, this concept still lacks conclusive empirical evidence. In the current study, we applied representational decoding to EEG data. On the behavioral level, the findings replicated binding effects that have been established in previous studies: The task performance was impaired when an event file had to be reconfigured. The EEG-decoding results showed that retrieval processes of stimulus–response bindings could be decoded using the representational content developed after the initial establishment of these stimulus–response bindings. We showed that stimulus-related properties became immediately reactivated when re-encountering the respective stimulus–response association. These reactivations were temporally stable. In contrast, representations of stimulus–response mappings revealed a transient pattern of activity and could not successfully be decoded directly after stimulus–response binding. Information detailing the bindings between stimuli and responses were also retrieved, but only after having been loaded into a memory system.
