Barynotus makolskii Smreczynski, 1955 and Coelositona cambricus (Stephens, 1831) are newly recorded species for Ukraine. Specimens, including male and female genitalia of Barynotus makolskii have been photographed. The key to Barynotus species of Ukraine is provided. Primula elatior (L.) Hill is identified as a host plant of Barynotus makolskii. The distribution data for eight poorly-known weevil species in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil and Zakarpatska Provinces of Ukraine are given: Barynotus makolskii Smreczynski, 1955, B. moerens (Fabricius, 1792), B. obscurus (Fabricius, 1775), Otiorhynchus (Magnanotius) norici Alonso-Zarazaga, 2013, Argoptochus quadrisignatus (Bach, 1856), Coelositona cambricus (Stephens, 1831), Phloeophagus thomsoni (Grill, 1898), and Rhabdorrhynchus echii (Brahm, 1790). The Diaprepes root weevil (DRW), Diaprepes abbreviatus , is a broadly polyphagous invasive pest of agriculture in the southern United States and the Caribbean. Its genome was sequenced, assembled, and annotated to study genomic correlates of specialized plant-feeding and invasiveness and to facilitate the development of new methods for DRW control. The 1.69 Gb D. abbreviatus genome assembly was distributed across 653 contigs, with an N50 of 7.8 Mb and the largest contig of 62 Mb. Most of the genome was comprised of repetitive sequences, with 66.17% in transposable elements, 5.75% in macrosatellites, and 2.06% in microsatellites. Most expected orthologous genes were present and fully assembled, with 99.5% of BUSCO genes present and 1.5% duplicated. One hundred and nine contigs (27.19 Mb) were identified as putative fragments of the X and Y sex chromosomes, and homology assessment with other beetle X chromosomes indicated a possible sex chromosome turnover event. Genome annotation identified 18,412 genes, including 43 putative horizontally transferred (HT) loci. Notably, 258 genes were identified from gene families known to encode plant cell wall degrading enzymes and invertases, including carbohydrate esterases, polysaccharide lyases, and glycoside hydrolases (GH). GH genes were unusually numerous, with 239 putative genes representing 19 GH families. Simple Summary: The taxonomic status of O. smreczynskii Cmol., 1968 as a valid species was finally confirmed on the basis of the results of molecular, morphological and anatomical studies. An urban species, with a distribution closely associated with human activities, this weevil is regarded as a pest of gardens and ornamental plants. The set of characters used for its identification is provided. The structure of the female genitalia turned out to be useful for differentiating the sister species O. smreczynskii and O. rotundus. The entire life cycle, morphology of immatures and phenology of O. smreczynskii were examined in detail both in the laboratory and in the field. Host plants are listed and the unique feeding signs of O. smreczynskii are illustrated. The revised distributions of O. smreczynskii and O. rotundus show that the bisexual O. rotundus is being displaced by the parthenogenetic O. smreczynskii. The hypothetical origin of O. smreczynskii given here is based on the natural distribution of its host plants. The mature larva and pupa of Otiorhynchus smreczynskii are described and illustrated with complete chaetotaxy for the first time. Five larval instars and the factors for larval growth are determined, and the larval development of this species is comprehensively described. In order to confirm species affiliation, selected larvae were subjected to genetic analysis (mtCOI). Host plants and unique feeding signs of some Entiminae species are presented, and all available data on development are documented and interpreted. Additionally, the morphometry of 78 specimens (48 of O. smreczynskii and 30 of O. rotundus) was examined in order to verify the usefulness of morphological features in distinguishing both species. The female genitalia of both species are illustrated, described and compared with each other for the first time. A new species, Macrotarrhus dudkoi Legalov, sp. nov. from Hisar Range (Uzbekistan: Surxondaryo Region) is described and illustrated. This new species is similar to M. bartelsii (Boheman, 1842) but differs in the dense brown scales on the elytra, a weak middle carina on the rostrum, and wider aedeagus that is slightly narrower towards the apex. It is distinguish from M. (M.) conspersus (Petri, 1901) in the rostrum with middle carina, the elytra covered with brown scales, narrower second tarsomere of the protarsi and a wide aedeagus narrowed towards the apex. A new species, Eremochorus fomichevi Legalov, sp. nov. from Almaty Region is described and illustrated. The new species is close to E. varius (Boheman, 1842) but differs in the longer setae on the body, smaller body size and narrower apex of the aedeagus. A new species, Archaeosciaphilus gyrommatus n. sp. of the subfamily Entiminae, is described from Baltic amber. The new species is similar to A. marshalli but differs in the smaller body sizes, the scape reaching middle of the eye, narrower decumbent elytral scales, weakly convex elytral interstriae and tarsal claws equal in length. The genus Archaeosciaphilus , n. placem. is transferred from the tribe Sciaphilini to the tribe Polydrusini. A list of species from the subfamily Entiminae described from Baltic amber is given. The Cape Floristic Region in the Republic of South Africa is a well‐recognized hotspot of biodiversity. Although this region is mostly known for its high level of plant diversity and endemicity, it also hosts an understudied and likely diverse arthropod fauna. Here we investigate the evolutionary history and timing of diversification of the apterous weevil genus Phlyctinus (Curculionidae: Entiminae), which is endemic to the coastal area and adjacent mountain ranges of the Cape floristic region and generally associated with sunflower plants (Asteraceae). We use a diverse array of molecular analyses (phylogenetic inference, molecular species delimitation and dating analyses) to analyse a novel molecular dataset of 202 weevil specimens (including 170 Phlyctinus sampled in 60 sites), and sequenced for two mitochondrial and four nuclear gene fragments. Phylogenetic and dating analyses indicate that the genus started diversifying in the late Miocene, with contrasting diversification dynamics for the three inferred clades, which present disjunct distributions. Host plant records and the lack of relatedness of species living in sympatry indicate that the diversification of Phlyctinus was predominantly driven by allopatric (geographic) speciation. We hypothesize that the interplay between topography and recurring cycles of coastline‐habitat fragmentation resulting from sea level oscillations spurred the diversification of the most speciose clade, whereas in the two remaining clades populations likely remained connected thus hampering allopatric speciation. Interestingly, this pattern echoes with the role of sea level oscillations as an important driver of the radiation of several lineages in the coastline ecosystems of the Cape Floristic Region. From the modern distribution of the tribes Anypotactini and Eudiagogini (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), it can be assumed that the climate of the late Eocene amber forests was similar to that of the Valdivian temperate forests. A new species, Paonaupactus zosimovichi sp. n. from the tribe Anypotactini of the subfamily Entiminae is described from Late Eocene Rovno amber. It differs from Paonaupactus gracilis by its rarer, decumbent scales on the elytral interstriae, elytral interstriae, which are clearly visible between scales, and its smaller body size. Simple Summary: Over 12,000 species of the subfamily Entiminae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) have been described worldwide, but there has yet to be realization of the potential for DNA barcodes to assist in species-level identification. Here, we analyzed the variation in intra- and interspecific genetic distance of 621 public- and 27 self-determined sequences, to determine parameters for species identification of Entiminae. Our study found no universal barcoding gap at the subfamily level, although a genetic distance threshold of 9.18% can delimit more than 88% of Entiminae species. We also inferred additional empirical threshold values for 14 genera (species > 2) that can delimit congeneric species. The subfamily Entiminae is the largest group in the family Curculionidae, and it has long represented a challenge in traditional and molecular classification. Here, we analyzed intra- and interspecific genetic distances of 621 public COI barcode sequences (658bp) from 39 genera and 110 species of Entiminae, to determine parameters most congruent in retaining established species. We found that the mean intraspecific genetic distance (3.07%) was much smaller than the mean interspecific one (21.96%), but there is a wide range of overlap between intra- and interspecific genetic distances (0.77–18.01%), indicating that there is no consistent, universal barcoding gap. Specifically, DNA barcoding gap analysis for morphospecies revealed that 102 of 110 morphospecies had barcoding gaps, and 9.18% was the optimum threshold of genetic distances for 97 species delimitation. We further confirmed this threshold with barcodes from 27 morphologically identified specimens (including 21 newly reported barcodes) sequenced from five genera and seven species. We also identified thresholds to delimit congeneric species within 14 selected genera (species > 2), which varied from 7.42% (Trichalophus) to 13.48% (Barypeithes). We herein present optimal parameters for species identification in the Entiminae. Our study suggests that despite no universal genetic distance threshold value in subfamily Entiminae, 9.18% is optimal for most species. We recommend a wider sampling of geographic populations to better account for intraspecific distance variation, and that genetic distance thresholds for species delimitation should be refined at the genus level. Despite discoveries of new species of Metapocyrtus Heller, 1912 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Mindanao Island, Philippines, over the past few years, there are still many unknown species inhabiting unprotected and unexplored forest and mountain ecosystems. A recent survey of Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary revealed two new species of the genus. These two species, Metapocyrtus villalobosae, new species, and M. gapudi, new species, from Mount Kabunulan, Hamiguitan Range, Surop, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, Philippines, are described. The alfalfa root weevil Sitona discoideus Gyllenhal 1834 (Curculionidae: Entiminae) is herein reported for the first time for Argentina. This weevil is native to southern Europe and northern Africa and was accidentally introduced in Australia, New Zealand, the United States of America, and Chile. The mature larva and pupa of Graptus triguttatus triguttatus and the mature larva of Peritelus sphaeroides are described for the first time. The larvae of Philopedon plagiatum and Tanymecus palliatus are re-described. Five larval instars were determined in Tanymecus, thereby correcting doubtful data in the literature. The relationship between larval growth, number of larval instars, head width of the mature larva, and the adult weevil is explained using the example of Tanymecus. The nearly constant ratio of subsequent larval instars in head width ratio, termed "growth factor" and derived from Dyar's ratio, is used for the determination of larval instars. A new genus of Trachyphloeini, Epistomius gen. nov. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) living in forest litter in the eastern part of South Africa is described, illustrated and its position in the subfamily Entiminae is discussed. This contribution adopts the taxonomic concept annotation and alignment approach. Accordingly, and where indicated, previous and newly inferred meanings of taxonomic names are individuated according to one specific source. Articulations among these concepts and pairwise, logically consistent alignments of original and revisionary classifications are also provided, in addition to conventional nomenclatural provenance information. A phylogenetic revision of the broad-nosed weevil genera Minyomerus Horn, 1876 sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982), and Piscatopus Sleeper, 1960 sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982) (Curculionidae [non-focal]: Entiminae [non-focal]: Tanymecini [non-focal]) is presented. Prior to this study, Minyomerus sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982) contained seven species, whereas the monotypic Piscatopus sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982) was comprised solely of P. griseus Sleeper, 1960 sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982). We thoroughly redescribe these recognized species-level entities and furthermore describe ten species as new to science: M. bulbifrons sec. Jansen & Franz (2015) (henceforth: [JF2015]), sp. n., M. aeribal-lux [JF2015], sp. n., M. cracens [JF2015], sp. n., M. gravivultus [JF2015], sp. n., M. imberbus [JF2015], sp. n., M. reburrus [JF2015], sp. n., M. politus [JF2015], sp. n., M. puticulatus [JF2015], sp. n., M. rutellirostris [JF2015], sp. n., and M. trisetosus [JF2015], sp. n. A cladistic analysis using 46 morphological characters of 22 terminal taxa (5/17 outgroup/ingroup) yielded a single most-parsimonious cladogram (L = 82, CI = 65, RI = 82). The analysis strongly supports the monophyly of Minyomerus [JF2015] with eight unreversed synapomorphies, and places P. gris eus sec. O'Brien & Wibmer (1982) within the genus as sister to M. rutellirostris [JF2015]. Accordingly, Piscatopus sec. Sleeper (1960), syn. n. is changed to junior synonymy of Minyomerus [JF2015], and its sole member P. griseus sec. Sleeper (1960) is moved to Minyomerus [JF2015] as M. griseus [JF2015], comb. n. In addition, the formerly designated type M. innocuus Horn, 1876 sec. Pierce (1913), syn. n. is changed to junior synonymy of M. microps (Say, 1831) [JF2015] which has priority. The genus is widespread throughout western North America, ranging from Canada to Mexico and Baja California. Apparent patterns of interspecific diversity of exterior and geni-talic morphology, varying host plant ranges, overlapping and widely extending species distributions, suggest an early origin for Minyomerus [JF2015], with a diversification that likely followed the development of North American desert biomes. A new subgenus Podorhynchus subgen. n. (type species Otiorhynchus cylindricus STIERLIN, 1877) of the genus Otiorhynchus, until now confused with Podonebistus REITTER, 1912, is described. Otiorhynchus (Podonebistus) trichopterus sp. n. from Crete, Otiorhynchus granicus sp. n. from Turkey and O. idhaeus sp. n. from Crete (both species in the subgenus Choilisanus REITTER, 1912) are described. An extensive material of the Cape Verde endemic weevil genus Dinas Wollaston, 1867 (Curculionidae: Entiminae) is revised. Two subgenera are recognized based on the external morphology and biology of adults. Microspina subgen. nov. is established for the group with smaller-sized adults which are flower-eaters adapted to habitats with Macaronesian endemic flora; 10 species are transferred to the subgenus: D. (M.) angusticeps Roudier, 1957, D. (M.) angustula Wollaston, 1867, D. (M.) elliptipennis Wollaston, 1867, D. (M.) heckeli Geisthardt, 1995, D. (M.) micans Roudier, 1957, D. (M.) obsita Wollaston, 1867, D. (M.) pallipes Roudier, 1957, D. (M.) punctipennis Roudier, 1957, D. (M.) sitonaeformis Wollaston, 1867, andD. (M.) viridisquamea Roudier, 1957. Contrary, adults of Dinas s. str. were found on the ground and under stones only. The Dinas fauna of Sao Nicolau Island is studied in detail. Dinas (Microspina) afonsoi sp. nov. and D. (Dinas) strakai sp. nov. are described from the eastern part of the island. The types and new material of the remaining two species from the western part of the island, D. (Microspina) angusticeps and D. (Microspina) sitonaeformis, are reviewed, and lectotype for the latter is designated. An identification key to all species known from Sao Nicolau is provided. The origin of Dinas and its biogeographic affinities are discussed. Distributional pattern of the genus within the archipelago, particularly in Sao Nicolau are commented. Abstract: The weevils and their relatives (superfamily Curculionoidea) constitute a huge radiation of beetles, but basal relationships in this group remain controversial, in particular within the largest family, Curculionidae. We used next-generation sequencing to generate mitochondrial genome data comprising 12 protein coding genes for 27 taxa. Together with two published ingroup sequences, (sub)family relationships were assessed with Bayesian and ML searches under various models and partitioning schemes. Forward and reverse strands of the mitochondrial genome differed in nucleotide skew. Consequently synonymous codon usage differed substantially on either strand for each amino acid, whereby codons ending in AT and GC were favored on the forward and reverse strands, respectively. Data partitioning by forward/reverse strand and codon position greatly improved likelihood scores and nodal support, whereas the tree topology was largely stable. The analysis generally supports the basal position of several ‘orthocerus’ lineages with straight antennae and male genitalia of an ancestral type; a paraphyletic mixed group of Heteromorphi exhibiting mixed ancestral and derived antennal and genitalic characters; and the derived ‘gonathocerous’ lineages with kinked antennae corresponding to the strongly supported Curculionidae. The latter did not include the wood boring Platypodinae that was recovered as sister to Dryophthoridae, while the Scolytinae and Cossoninae formed two independent lineages of wood borers within Curculionidae. A basal split in Curculionidae placed the Entiminae and Hyperinae as sister to all other subfamilies with high support, which provides a new ecological concept for structuring the Curculionidae according to the ectophagous larval life style in the former versus endophagous larvae in all others. This basal split is also supported by gene order rearrangements in a tRNA cluster. Recent studies supporting the monophyly of wood boring weevils may be attributable to long-branch attraction, as molecular rates in their mitochondrial genomes were found to be higher than in other lineages, but this did not confound tree searches under combined analysis of mitochondrial protein coding genes. A broad-nosed weevil, Promecops tumidirostris n. sp. (Eudiagogini: Curculionidae), and a false ladybird beetle, Nilio dominicana n. sp. (Nilionini: Nilionidae), are described from Dominican amber. P. tumidirostris can be distinguished from extant species by the greatly swollen apical portion of its rostrum, large eyes almost meeting on top of its head and a V-shaped suture separating the first and second abdominal sternites. N. dominicana differs from extant species by its small size and 18 elytral striae with small interstrial punctures. Neither tribe is represented in Hispaniola today, supporting earlier studies showing a greater biodiversity in the region during the mid-Tertiary than at present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new monotypic genus, Yunakovius gen. nov., is described, based on Y. orientalis sp. nov. from China, Mongolia and Siberia. The genus Omo iotus Sharp, 1896 is recognized as a junior synonym of Asphalmus Sharp, 1896, which currently contains three species: Asphalmus japonicus Sharp, 1896, A. ovatus (Sharp, 1896), comb. nov., and A. sharpi sp. nov. (China). A lectotype is designated for Omoiotus ovatus Sharp, 1896. Six new species of the genus Heisonyx Marshall, 1947 from South Africa (H. barclayi sp. nov., H. danielssoni sp. nov., H. fuscus sp. nov., H. giustocaroli sp. nov., H. hexarthrum sp. nov., and H. jelineki sp. nov.) are described, illustrated and keyed. The genus is redescribed and its taxonomic position is briefl y discussed. Heisonyx and Lalagetes Schoenherr, 1842 are newly transferred from the Oosomini Lacordaire, 1863 to the Embrithini Marshall, 1942. Three new species of the weevil genus Laparocerus Schonherr (1834) adapted to the edaphic environment of the Canary Islands are described: L. edaphicus n. sp., L. oromii n. sp. and L. lopezi n. sp. They live in the humid laurel forests of Tenerife (Anaga Mountains), La Gomera (Garajonay National Park) and Gran Canaria (Valsendero), respectively. The small size and somewhat tubular body shape is a common character among them, as is the reduction of the eyes, which are totally absent in L. oromii n. sp. Despite these common adaptive traits, the three species seem not to be directly related. Melanocyphus Jekel is a broad-nosed weevil genus (Entiminae: Naupactini) endemic to the high Andes of Colombia, that includes two species, M. bispinus (Boheman) and M. lugubris (Boheman), mainly differentiated by the presence or absence of humeral teeth. Based on characters of the cuticle, vestiture, morphology of the antennae, rostrum and genitalia, Melanocyphus appears most closely related to Amitrus Schoenherr, a genus distributed in similar habitats and at similar elevations in Bolivia and Peru. Since the type species had not been designated, we proposed Cyphus bispinus (original combination) as type of Melanocyphus. This contribution includes redescriptions of the genus and its species, a dichotomous key, habitus photographs and illustrations of the diagnostic characters of the external morphology and genitalia. Hybreoleptops Kuschel was established in a key to Chilean “Leptopini” for four species previously included in other genera. Those species are: H. tuberculifer (Boheman), H. aureosignatus (Blanchard), H. vestitus (Blanchard), and H. xanthomelas (Fairmaire and Germain). The genus is endemic to southern South America, inhabiting the southernmost part of Santiago Province (Central Chilean subregion) and Maule province, and the northernmost part of Valdivian province (Subantarctic subregion). All the species are recorded only from Chile, except H. tuberculifer which has been recorded both for Chile and Argentina. We undertake a cladistic analysis of the genus based on adult external morphology and genitalia. In the cladistic analysis two terminal taxa correspond to new species. The resulting cladogram confirms that these new species must be assigned to Hybreoleptops and lead us to redescribe the genus. Accordingly, we also describe the two new species, H. santiagensis Pérez and Posadas n. sp. and H. juanjosei Pérez and Posadas n. sp., and provide a key to the species of the genus. The biological cycle of Amphidees latifrons (Sharp) was determined and estimated in degree days (°D), whit lower treshold of 5°C. In total required 4,564 HU, which required 326 days; this events by separated are: preoviposition 280 HU (20 days), incubation and hatched 350 HU (25 days), larval stages 1,260 HU (90 days), pupae 420 HU (30 days) and adults. In the orchard, the populations of L2, L3 and pupae were obtained from February to May, the larvae were eating secondary roots of apples. The adults were present all days of the year, the main population was observed from September to November, eating in this period leaves, and during November to February eating apple buds and vegetative buds. The Entiminae are broad-nosed weevils constituting the most diverse subfamily of Curculionidae, with over 50 tribes. We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. The tree resulting from parsimony analysis shows a clade of Leptopiini from the Australian region and another clade including taxa mainly distributed in the Palaearctic and Neotropical regions, but in the Bayesian tree the South American and Australian Leptopiini are grouped together. The mainly Palaearctic Entiminae (e.g., Brachyderini, Laparocerini, Otiorhynchini, Peritelini, Polydrusini, Phyllobiini and Sciaphylini) form a subclade separated from Southern Hemisphere taxa. Among the latter, the well-supported Naupactini are the sister group of the South American Tanymecini, excluding Platyaspistes, herein transferred to Leptopiini (new placement). Another well-justified clade is Eustylini–Geonemini, which also includes the enigmatic Galapagonotus, and the genus Artipus, thus corroborating its recent exclusion from Naupactini.
