The article reviews the latest work that illustrates how metabolic pathways are regulated in proliferating cells to generate some of the key molecules needed to support growth. It further discusses how genetic and environmental factors can influence the regulation of said pathways to promote cell proliferation in different contexts. It suggests that metabolism is actively regulated to facilitate a metabolic program that enables cells to adapt to physiological situations.
