The basic part of the rolling stock consists of the freight wagons. However, they are used under heavy conditions (large-tonnage loads, severe atmospheric conditions, aggressive effect of loads, etc.). The load bearing capacity of the wagons should be provided throughout their service life. The main factors affecting the load bearing capacity of wagons are the properties of the corresponding materials and the cross sections shape of the parts. Therefore, the study of fatigue failure of the wagon materials is an important and relevant topic. The paper presents the features and results of the investigated synopsis of the development of the wagon materials fatigue failures. Thus, the work presents: the factors affecting fatigue limit of wagon parts; the impact of the external factors on the wagon parts strength; the influence of stress concentration; the influence of the absolute dimensions of the part cross-section; the effect of part deformation type and the cycle asymmetry; the effect of temperature; the dependence of strength on time; the influence of the service life of the part and the load condition. Improving the efficiency and quality of rail transport depends on the technical and economic indicators of the car such as performance, capital expenditures, operating costs, operational availability and consumption of materials. To make the rail transport successfully continue to compete with other means of transport, it is necessary to constantly maintain its viability at a high technical level. The work carried out in this direction is done by the repair and maintenance of cars, which performance should be planned on the basis of their actual state. Currently, Ukrzaliznytsia has many hopper cars for transportation of pellets and sinter at temperature up to 700 °C (pellet cars) that have completed their specified service life. The paper presents the characteristics of diagnosis procedures for overall repairs with the extension of the useful life of pellet cars and the requirements for their renovated models. Extension of the pellet cars service life will allow us to meet the needs of the national economy in the transportation of goods more fully and thus reduce capital expenditures for the purchase of new rolling stock. The article shows the peculiarities and results of optimization designing of upper bundling of side walls of one of the most widespread models of gondola cars of native production – models 12-9745 to reduce materials consumption during fulfillment of conditions of strength and exploitation reliability. One of the priority development fields of native railways is the creation by own engineering capacity of gondola cars, which will meet the modern needs. Analysis results of professional inquiry desk and special technical literature testified the absence of executing and lighting the results of the work concerning determination and combination of the data about present requirements to the body structure (combine modules of body and frame) of general-purpose gondola cars. The article shows modern requirements, which are necessary to be considered during designing of new constructions or updating of already existing constructions of carrying systems of railway general-purpose gondola cars.
