This study is an investigation of the validity of the Online Test Anxiety Inventory (OΝ‐TAI) for adult students. The scale contained the 20 items of the Test Anxiety Inventory (Spielberger, 1980), together with five computer anxiety items, all rephrased so as to pertain to online test anxiety. The scale was administered to a large sample of Greek and Cypriot postgraduate students and Rasch measurement was used for the investigation of its psychometric properties. After original analyses, one of the computer anxiety items was removed, leaving the final instrument with a total of 24 items. Results showed that the scale is unidimensional thus supporting that computer anxiety can indeed be considered a component of online test anxiety. All evidence collected supports the high degree of construct validity of the scale. Furthermore, results verify that the 4‐point scale used is optimal. Accepting Greek Cypriot administration's (Republic of Cyprus) medical aid by the Turkish Cypriots during COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020 has caused a conflict in North Cyprus print media. During the pandemic, medical aid has been provided by Greek Cypriot administration with the initiatives of the President of the time in North Cyprus, Mustafa Akıncı. The Prime Minister of the time in North Cyprus, Ersin Tatar opposed to this medical aid. This study focuses on the most circulated two North Cyprus newspapers' (Kıbrıs and YeniDüzen) discourse regarding the aid. The medical aid sent by the Greek Cypriot administration (Republic of Cyprus) is important for developing mutual trust and enhances the already existing networks between the two sides in the island. The reactions to this aid are also important due to approaching Presidential elections in North Cyprus since both the President and the Prime Minister were candidates in the elections. The study presents the results of Critical Discourse Analysis conducted for analysing the news stories related to the medical aid under the light of Social Capital Theory put forth by Robert Putnam. Background: In response to the call for papers under the theme "What is in a name" proposed by the Scientific Child Speech Committee of the International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders (IALP), the current paper discusses taxonomy and its relation to speech sound disorders (SSD) from a cross‐linguistic perspective. Aims: This paper starts with a brief description of specific SSD frameworks and nomenclature. Methods & Procedures: The authors draw from international theoretical and clinical research which underscore the importance of taxonomy systems in SSD. Outcomes & Results: The current papers stresses the importance of the contribution to differential diagnosis and prognosis of children with protracted speech profiles on the bases of taxonomy profiles and systems for SSD. Conclusions & Implications: The advantages and shortcomings of taxonomy in SSD are also discussed from a cross‐linguistic context. The language of focus includes the Greek dialectal variation of Cypriot‐Greek. The specter of new global conflicts has brought up old questions about dark tourism: is it ever appropriate to visit recent ruins? Can ruins, and places where violence has occurred, teach lessons about peace and cooperation? Or is it merely war voyeurism? This piece considers the ruins of Varosha (a beachfront district of Famagusta, or Gazimağusa, in Turkish) a once thriving tourism hub which has been walled off from visitors since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The invasion, and the creation of the largely-unrecognized state of Northern Cyprus, was preceded by years of interethnic tension between Turkish- and Greek-Cypriot communities. Recently, the government has reopened the destroyed city, forcing peace activists and urbanists to consider what role these ruins play in conflict resolution and in claims for space. While language is widely recognized as one of the elements upon which nations have been built, emphasis has been placed on codified languages, rather than the uncodified vernacular spoken within a particular territory. Drawing on thematic analysis of qualitative surveys and political documents, this paper examines how Cypriot Greek, a local language variety, is claimed by counter-hegemonic perspectives in Cyprus to foster a sense of collective belonging designating the island as an independent cultural entity. By highlighting how such perspectives challenge the hegemony of Greek Cypriot nationalism, the paper underlines that uncodified vernaculars can shape senses of national belonging. The 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus led to the division of the island between the Turkish-occupied north and the Greek-Cypriot Republic in the south. For approximately 30 years, the Greek and Turkish-Cypriot communities on the island were prohibited from 'crossing' to the other side. However, the relaxation of movement restrictions in 2003 provided an opportunity for many displaced persons from both communities to visit their former homes and villages once more. This paper explores the ways in which Greek-Cypriot refugee women experienced these return visits. It draws on oral history interviews to investigate how the physical return and re-experience of the refugee house has been significant to them and their understanding of home. The paper argues that the tension between the remembered and encountered home led to an inability to re-establish meaningful connections in terms of the refugee house, giving rise to a home-unmaking that questioned their association with it. The paper contributes to the existing literature regarding the ways in which home comes under question or is unmade, revealing how return and homecoming can damage previously associated meanings of home and have effects on how a dwelling is understood and experienced. This study investigated the linguistic landscape (LL) of Pyla, a bi-communal village in Cyprus. The data collection and analysis were based on the geosemiotics theoretical framework. The researcher created a corpus of visible linguistic signs photographed during the fieldwork with a focus on bottom-up and top-down signs in Pyla. The analysis of the data showed that the overall pattern of Pyla's LL was monolingual, with English playing a prominent role. However, bilingual, and multilingual signs were also present, with English, Greek and Turkish being the dominant language constellation. The LL in Pyla is indicative of its ethnolinguistic vitality as a bi-communal village inhabited by both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot populations; the LL also reveals the agency of the sign creators and owners regarding the choice of languages and the content of the signs, as well as such processes as internationalisation, commodification and linguistic instrumentalism. The importance of this study stems from its goal to deepen the understanding of linguistic landscape (LL) and multilingualism in Cyprus. It specifically analyses both private and public signage in the mixed village of Pyla, while considering the island's geopolitical division and the role of English as a mediating language in the process of peacebuilding. Background: Identification of auditory processing disorders is achieved using questionnaires along with linguistic, non-linguistic, and auditory processing tests. Notably, the questionnaires "Children's Auditory Performance Scale" (CHAPS) and "Auditory Processing Domain Questionnaire" (APDQ) are widely recognized and used. The current study investigated the psychometric properties of the CHAPS and APDQ in Greek Cypriot children. Methods: The CHAPS and APDQ questionnaires were completed by parents of 40 Greek Cypriot children, 16 typically developing (TD) children, and 24 children with a history of Speech Sound Disorders (SSDs). Results: There were significant differences between the two groups on both questionnaires. Cronbach's alpha was calculated at α = 0.922 for the CHAPS total score and α = 0.926 for the APDQ total score. The Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) analysis provided a cut-off point equal to −0.30 (AUC 0.849, p < 0.001) for CHAPS and a cut-off point equal to 90.00 (AUC 0.820, p < 0.001) for APDQ. Significant positive Spearman ρ correlations were observed between the CHAPS and APDQ (ρ = 0.639, p = 0.001). In this study, the coercive diplomacy practices implemented by Türkiye and the TRNC in the S-300 Missile crisis are discussed. The crisis that caused the waters in the Eastern Mediterranean to warm up and brought Türkiye to the brink of war was examined from the perspective of the TRNC Press. Awareness was raised and social consciousness was created by the news in the print media that global and regional actors were involved in the problem. One of the many dimensions of the global tussle surrounding the Covid‐19 pandemic has been the rise of right‐wing radicalization. In this article, we investigate whether the pandemic offered an opportunity for the Greek Cypriot far‐right party, ELAM, to increase its visibility as an opposition force and in what ways. We also explore the transformations in populist rhetoric and practices in the Republic of Cyprus, seeking to identify patterns of persistence and evolution, particularly in how they handle scientific matters in their political stances. Similarly, we delve into the impact of far‐right populist politics on the political dynamics in Cyprus. Our findings indicate that pandemic politics were not the exclusive or primary factor in the normalization of the far right but rather served as an accelerator of preexisting trends. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit many regions, including the Eastern Mediterranean. It has profoundly affected Cypriot communities and caused political, economic, and social consequences. The profile article aims to investigate the relationship between the pandemic threat on the island and decisions made by the Greek and Turkish Cypriot administrations. What aspects and to what extent has the pandemic affected relations between the two Cypriot communities? How have these changes influenced the bilateral dialogue and political decisions made by the Greek and Turkish Cypriot administrations? Is the pandemic conducive to developing cooperation, or does it extend existing divisions? The profile article argues a relationship between the emergence of the pandemic and the re-isolation of both Cypriot communities, which is one of its consequences, and the initiatives to resolve the Cypriot conflict by sanctioning the existence of two independent states. This article discusses the confrontation between Greeks of Cyprus (GoC) and Turks of Cyprus (ToC) in the Legislative Council of Cyprus regarding the issue of the Enosis (Union) and the changes of content since 1902. The question arises, yet to a limited extent, during the period 1902–1914, given the formal subordination of Cyprus to the Ottoman Empire. From 1915 to 1918, due to the placement of the Ottoman Empire on the side of Britain's opponents and the participation of Greece within the Entente front, the Greek pressure on the British became very intense, while the Turkish were in a defensive position. In the period from 1918 to 1930, the main argument of the ToC was that even Greece no longer raised the issue of Enosis. The objective of the study was to examine how distinct psychopathic traits, including callous-unemotional (CU) traits, impulsivity and narcissism, as well as family, school and friend social support are longitudinally associated with cyberbullying and cyber-victimization. Associations were investigated by employing a four-year longitudinal design in a large sample of Greek-Cypriot adolescents. Findings suggested that cyber-bullying and cyber-victimization decreased from early to middle adolescence. Additionally, the longitudinal model suggested that both CU traits and narcissism, assessed in grade 7, were associated with the onset of cyber-bullying and cyber-victimization in grade 8, but not with change over time. Impulsivity did not predict cyber-bullying or cyber-victimization. Finally, none of the environmental factors were associated with the onset and growth of cyber-bullying, although family support predicted girls' initial levels and change over time in cyber-victimization. Mandarin has a low rate of overtly expressed arguments in all syntactic functions without agreement marking on the verb. It has been claimed that Mandarin exhibits higher rates of zero arguments than other languages. Most previous work has compared Mandarin with English, while comparison with other languages remains a desideratum. This study compares Mandarin with seven languages (Cypriot Greek, English, Northern Kurdish, Sanzhi, Teop, Tondano, Vera'a) taken from Multi-CAST (Haig & Schnell 2019). Results suggest that while Mandarin exhibits more zero arguments than pronouns, this is not unique, with e.g. Cypriot Greek having a higher rate of zero arguments. In addition, a relatively stable rate of lexical expressions can be found across languages, relativising Mandarin's unique position with regard to referential choice even further. Cyprus was conquered from several populations because of its special geographical location. In this study, 406 unrelated Cypriot samples were tested based on their mitochondrial DNA. In more detail, 185 were Greek Cypriots, 114 Armenian Cypriots and 107 Maronite Cypriots. This is the first time where the mitochondrial DNA of Greek Cypriots, Armenian Cypriots and Maronite Cypriots is compared with the aim of characterizing the maternal ancestry of Cypriots. The control region of the mtDNA is the most informative in terms of studying maternal ancestry and consists of three hypervariable regions (HVS-I, HVS-II, HVS-III). The hypervariable regions can provide important information regarding the maternal ancestor of the tested samples. The entire control region of the mtDNA was used to determine the mitotypes and subsequently the haplogroups of all the Cypriot DNA samples. Based on the aforementioned analyses, Greek Cypriots were found to be genetically closer to Armenian Cypriots, while Greek Cypriots and Armenian Cypriots showed moderate genetic differentiation with Maronite Cypriots. The most prevalent haplogroups among Cypriots were haplogroups H and U, while R0 is common but in different frequencies for Greek Cypriots, Armenian Cypriots and Maronite Cypriots. Folk lyric poetry is a form of artistic expression that is related to the cultural identity of the peoples to whom its creation is attributed. With respect to wedding songs both in the Iberian Peninsula and the island of Cyprus, due to the evolution of the civilizations that settled there providing their culture, the songs' development in Castilian Spanish and Greek Cypriot has its antecedents in Latin and Greek ancient lyric poetry respectively. Given the continuity of the aforementioned kind of compositions over time, they are analysed their analogous laographic-literary motifs, that is to say, the minimal thematic units of ethnologic and literary nature that they both share, in which references to different aspects are discerned. This article focuses on social work professionals from both sides of divided Cyprus. Cyprus presents a very interesting, yet under-explored, case study as it remains an island de facto divided. The division has resulted in the physical and political separation of the two most populous ethnic communities (Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots) for over 50 years. This article offers an exploration of the views of social workers on both sides. Purpose: Studies on suicide-bereaved parents are scarce in South European and Eastern Mediterranean countries. We explored the experiences of Greek-speaking suicide-bereaved parents in Cyprus, with emphasis on the interpretations of their child's suicide, its aftereffects and their coping strategies. Methods: A qualitative methodology based on inductive content analysis of the interviews of ten mothers and two fathers was applied. Results: The participants described their efforts to make sense of the senseless, reporting numerous interpretations of their child's suicide. Some participants had achieved to move on by trying to keep the remaining family together. Others felt detached from their social network. The different coping strategies and support systems described, reflected participants' efforts to escape from obsessive, enduring and deeply traumatizing thoughts about their child's suicide. The analysis mirrored participants' ultimate desire to find existential relief and serenity through the management of distressing reminders of their child's suicide, and alleviate the burden of their own negative self-judgement and the criticism of others. They sought physical and emotional comfort in the inner realm of their psyche, through spiritual and psychological coping processes. Conclusion: Further exploration is suggested about intervention planning aiming to strengthen effective coping strategies and external supportive resources in mourning parents. In the context of Hobsbawm's thesis about the nineteenth‐century law of progress, the author studies Kollár's and Štúr's conception of Slavic reciprocity, which he compares with the Greek Great Idea (Megali Idea) and the Greek‐Cypriot idea of enosis. He came to the conclusion that there is greater similarity, especially between Štúr's conception and enosis, since they both required state‐political as well as territorial unification of Slavs or Greeks, unlike Kollár's conception, which was, rather, a cultural and literary reciprocity project. As a historical paradox, the author considers the fact that the practical and feasible conception of enosis was never carried out, while Kollár's theoretical conception and Štúr's highly unlikely model became, in a modified form, a reality after the First and Second World Wars. "Colonial Citizenship and Everyday Transnationalism: An Immigrant's Story" by Alexandria J. Innes is a valuable book that explores the colonial immigrant story of the author's grandfather, who left Cyprus and settled in the UK in 1954. Innes takes an International Relations approach to examine the politics of colonial migration, settlement, and identities. The book provides insights into Cypriot emigrants and immigrant stories in the UK, offering analysis of the author's grandfather's narrative. While the book is well-structured and sophisticated in its analysis, there are some areas where the author could have been more critical and nuanced. Overall, it is an excellent resource for those interested in colonial migrant experiences and Cypriot migration and settlement in the UK. [Extracted from the article]

There have been numerous studies investigating the perception of non-native sounds by listeners with different first language (L1) backgrounds. However, research needs to expand to under-researched languages and incorporate predictions conducted under the assumptions of new speech models. This study aimed to investigate the perception of Dutch vowels by Cypriot Greek adult listeners and test the predictions of cross-linguistic acoustic and perceptual similarity. The predictions of acoustic similarity were formed using a machine-learning algorithm. Listeners completed a classification test, which served as the baseline for developing the predictions of perceptual similarity by employing the framework of the Universal Perceptual Model (UPM), and an AXB discrimination test; the latter allowed the evaluation of both acoustic and perceptual predictions. The findings indicated that listeners classified each non-native vowel as one or more L1 vowels, while the discrimination accuracy over the non-native contrasts was moderate. In addition, cross-linguistic acoustic similarity predicted to a large extent the classification of non-native sounds in terms of L1 categories and both the acoustic and perceptual similarity predicted the discrimination accuracy of all contrasts. Being in line with prior findings, these findings demonstrate that acoustic and perceptual cues are reliable predictors of non-native contrast discrimination and that the UPM model can make accurate estimations for the discrimination patterns of non-native listeners. Within a short time, the Greek Revolt of 1821 deeply affected the island of Cyprus. Unlike in the other islands, the rebellion on Cyprus was over before it started owing to the severe measures taken against the rebels by Governor Mehmed Agha, who requested an edict from the sultan listing the names of prominent Greeks to execute. Many Greeks left the island for fear of execution, but some could not. According to Ottoman documents, there were 98 proscribed Cypriots, of whom 75 were executed; the other 23 escaped. In accordance with Ottoman law, the properties of the executed or escaped were first confiscated and then auctioned, with the proceeds transferred to the Public Treasury. But most of the executed or escaped Greeks were not wealthy, and claims by European consuls on the proceeds from the confiscated goods continued for many years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The article examines how the two Cypriot leaders – the Greek-Cypriot community leader Nicos Anastasiades and the Turkish-Cypriot community leader Mustafa Akinci – have used their Twitter accounts during the period leading to the intensification of the Cyprus peace process between 30 April 2015 and 31 October 2016. Design/methodology/approach: This article presents, using descriptive analysis and thematic analysis, how the two leaders have used Twitter in the negotiations' period. Findings: The analysis shows that the leaders, during the time frame examined, developed both pro-peace discourses around the Cyprus problem and para-social and vicarious intergroup contact that contributed in what Hogg (2015) defines an intergroup relational identity that is an effective form of "bridging" leadership across communities. Originality/value: The article argues that Twitter is a tool that, in the hands of political leaders in segregated public spheres caused by yet unresolved ethnic conflicts, can become a useful tool for constructing both a positive meaning around issues concerning the rival sides and transforming opposing social identities in the formation of an "extended sense of self that includes the collaboration partner" (Hogg, 2015, p. 191). This contribution compares the perception of peace of Cypriot youth, who live on the island and in the United Kingdom, and is based on interviews with them. Even though Cyprus has a large diaspora community compared to its population, diaspora studies have been unable to garner attention to the role of the Cypriot diaspora in peacebuilding in their homeland. Ignorance of young people both on the island and in the diaspora has prevented the inclusion of Cypriot youth in politics and peace processes. However, the role and perceptions of young people either in diaspora or on the island are quite important to reach sustainable peace. Youth's readiness for peace and willingness to co-exist would affect the outcome of a process. Accordingly, this contribution of the collection offers a two-part contribution to the literature: first, focusing on the neglected youth dimension in peace and conflict studies, and second, providing a comparative analysis of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot diaspora youth in the diaspora studies. Social science research has highlighted "honor" as a central value driving social behavior in Mediterranean societies, which requires individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation, through assertiveness, competitiveness, and retaliation in the face of threats. We predicted that members of Mediterranean societies may exhibit a distinctive combination of independent and interdependent social orientation, self-construal, and cognitive style, compared to more commonly studied East Asian and Anglo-Western cultural groups. We compared participants from eight Mediterranean societies (Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus [Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities], Lebanon, Egypt) to participants from East Asian (Korea, Japan) and Anglo-Western (the United Kingdom, the United States) societies, using six implicit social orientation indicators, an eight-dimensional self-construal scale, and four cognitive style indicators. Compared with both East Asian and Anglo-Western samples, samples from Mediterranean societies distinctively emphasized several forms of independence (relative intensity of disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, happiness based on disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, dispositional [vs. situational] attribution style, self-construal as different from others, self-directed, self-reliant, self-expressive, and consistent) and interdependence (closeness to in-group [vs. out-group] members, self-construal as connected and committed to close others). This study describes the design of a serious game for social change ("Fact Finders") that presents intergroup conflicts through historical inquiry and multiperspectivity. A pre-test post-test experimental design examined the game's effect on undergraduates' perceptions of conflicts in history. Participants included 97 Greek Cypriots (direct parties of the conflict) and 79 Slovenians (third parties of the conflict) who interacted with and evaluated the game online. Data sources included a 17-item questionnaire on perceptions of conflicts in history and gameplay learning analytics data. Findings indicated that both groups' perceptions for historical source evaluation and understanding multiperspectivity changed significantly after the game. The game significantly changed perceptions about the constructedness of history and the ability to overcome their country's troubled past only for direct parties of the conflict. The study provides empirical evidence demonstrating the potential value of serious games for affecting young people's perceptions of intractable intergroup conflicts and their desire to overcome troubled pasts. OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices toward added sugar intake among Cypriot university students. METHODS: This cross- sectional study was conducted among 200 students enrolled in public and private universities in Cyprus. Knowledge, attitudes and practices toward added sugar consumption was evaluated using self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: Only 8.5% of the students were able to accurately report the recommended values of sugar consumption. Most of the participants (76%) were aware of the health consequences of excessive sugar consumption, whereas 63.5% were aware of the existence of hidden sources of sugar and 88% of students stated that they read the nutrition declaration of the products that they are considering consuming. About 67% of students stated that they are actively trying to reduce their sugar consumption and the majority consume sugary beverages less than 1 day per week. CONCLUSIONS: Results support that although students read the nutrition facts label there is a limited awareness of sugar intake recommendations. The Cyprus Question, which Türkiye treats as a national cause and which many states attach importance to as an international problem, has so far been an extensively studied topic in the literature with its different dimensions. Within these dimensions, the official Greek Cypriot propaganda carried out during the cleavage among Greek Cypriots in the process leading to the 15 July 1974 coup d'état has not been adequately addressed. This study aims to contribute to the literature by addressing this point. The study examines the new propaganda of the Greek Cypriot leader Archbishop Makarios, who had to change tactics and put the Enosis propaganda in the background in order not to attract the reaction of Türkiye in 1967, and the way this propaganda treated the anti-Makarios armed Greek Cypriot groups that accused their leader as being a "traitor to the national cause". The study benefited from the official archives of Cyprus, United Kingdom and the USA, and the Turkish and Greek Cypriot newspapers of the period, and followed a historical and qualitative document analysis method. The main finding of the study is that Makarios separated the fanatical groups who opposed him from the rest of the Greek Cypriot community by accusing them of "serving partition, not Enosis". Makarios was aware that Türkiye's patience had reached the breaking point due to the violence against Turkish Cypriots during the 1963-1967 period. The continuation of these provocations would push Türkiye to intervene militarily. According to the Greek Cypriot leader, a "reasonable" citizen was the one who did not get impatient for the Enosis and did not provoke Türkiye. Every so often the field of theatre is gifted with an extraordinary artist whose work inspires a generation of colleagues and students. In addition to Haus's dramaturgical analyses and the multiple ways his productions are documented, this book offers entertaining recollections of Haus's artistic processes and collaborations. Α significant part of the psychological research on mental health and illness is interested in how the body can impact one's mental health. This impact is primarily explored using a biomedical framework, in studies that examine the body's role in the emergence of a mental illness, the ways it can signify the presence of an illness (i.e. physical symptoms) and, finally, its role in the treatment process. Within this literature, the body is conceptualised as an object that can be diagnosed and treated. The current study approaches the body as a subject in the experience of depression. Specifically, it demonstrates that the experience of depression is embodied and that the body mediates meaning-making and identity processes. Using qualitative findings from eight interviews with Greek-Cypriot adults diagnosed with depression, we demonstrate that participants make sense of depression through their bodies, as a painful, uncomfortable and agonising experience. Further, we discuss how the struggle to regain control over the body, experienced as hijacked by depression, leads to a disrupted relation with the self and the world that expands beyond the idea of the loss of self, as described in the literature. • Linear discriminant analysis demonstrated that most Dutch vowels had similar classification in terms of standard modern Greek and Cypriot Greek categories. • Crosslinguistic acoustic similarity can predict quite well most but not all nonnative discrimination patterns. • Standard Modern Greek and Cypriot Greek listeners do not differ in the discrimination of Dutch vowel contrasts. • This is due to the high acoustic proximity between the vowel systems of the two Greek varieties. Previous evidence suggests that nonnative speech perception is modulated by the speakers' first language (L1) dialect. This study aims (a) to examine the discrimination of Dutch vowel contrasts by Greek listeners , and (b) to determine whether listeners' L1 Greek dialectal background, namely, Standard Modern Greek (SMG) and Cypriot Greek (CG), affects the discrimination of nonnative contrasts. It has been proposed that crosslinguistic similarity between L1 and nonnative sounds can predict the perception of the latter sounds. For that purpose, discrimination predictions were developed using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA), which was based on the acoustic similarity between SMG/CG and Dutch vowels and which provided quantification of the classification of nonnative vowels in terms of the listeners' L1 categories. The participants of the perceptual study were adult Greek (SMG and CG) listeners of Dutch who completed an AXB test on a PC script. The results of the discrimination test showed that three out of four contrasts signaled good discrimination, while one contrast signaled less good discrimination. Although crosslinguistic acoustic similarity was a relatively good predictor of the listeners' nonnative discrimination patterns, it failed to provide accurate predictions for some contrasts. Another important finding was that SMG listeners did not differ from CG listeners in the discrimination of Dutch vowel contrasts. A central question in migration studies concerns how communities of belonging can exist beyond communities of identity. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork with Greek and Greek Cypriot immigrants in Denmark and theoretical discussions on "translocational belongings", this article suggests that security, equality and a sense of ownership are key factors that contribute towards an enhanced a sense of belonging premised on solidarity, even in the presence of cultural differences related to identity. Migrant belongings, it is further suggested, should not only be treated as plural but also as comparative vis-à-vis the country of origin. The immigrants' narratives often focussed on comparisons between Denmark with Greece or Cyprus emphasizing how their interactions with the Danish welfare state contributed to a, comparatively-speaking, more profound sense of belonging in Denmark. Why did the Australian far-left, namely the Communist Party of Australia (CPA), and the left-wing of the Australian Labor Party (ALP-left), support Cypriot enosis (union with Greece), when it was led by a violent far-right nationalist group, EOKA, and Greece was a repressive right-wing state? There are two aspects to answering this question: the ideological-intellectual and the political-electoral. Intellectually, the CPA and the ALP-left favoured their anti-imperialism and support for left-wing national liberation over any qualms in supporting far-right nationalist causes. Politically, they saw an electoral opportunity in courting left-wing and potential left-wing Greek-speaking migrants from Greece and Cyprus and championing both their labour and perceived 'national' causes. In doing so, they engaged with the Greek-speaking migrant labouring classes and gave prominence to their perceived 'national' struggles. This article considers why and how the Australian far-left in the form of the CPA and ALP-left became involved in the enosis politics of Greek Cypriots and the violent struggle of a small far-right minority in the island, while attempting to court the votes of left-wing Greek-speaking migrants, by supporting them in what they accepted was their 'national' cause – the 'liberation' of Cyprus and its enosis with Greece. A main objective of this article is to examine the underlying reasons behind the collapse of the reunification talks on Cyprus aimed at a federal model. Another aim of the article is to analyze Türkiye’s assertive policy in the Eastern Mediterranean. A major argument is that the disruption of the balance of power with respect to the Cyprus problem in favor of the Greek Cypriots after 2004 and the lack of a shared Cypriot identity were fundamental causes of the failure of the talks. The study also contends that the emergence of a siege mentality after the July 2016 coup plot in Türkiye, together with its economic and military strengthening, the rise of multi-polarity in international politics, and diminishing EU political sway in the country, incentivized Türkiye to pursue an active foreign policy agenda in the Eastern Mediterranean. This study concludes that the failure of long-standing negotiations to reach a federal settlement on the island and the comfortable position obtained by the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) in the negotiations vis-à-vis the Turkish side following the accession to the EU together with Türkiye’s nationalist posture after 2016 and the deepening of the identity dilemma among the Greek and Turkish Cypriots over the course of time induced Türkiye to shelve a federal solution to the Cyprus issue and return to a pre-2002 two-state solution. The article also concludes that Türkiye was further prompted to take an independent course in the Eastern Mediterranean by the combination of a number of factors: the rapprochement between the AKP Government and nationalist elements in the country after the 2016 coup plot, the militarization of its foreign policy, Türkiye’s perception that the West was in decline, the decreased credibility and thus leverage over Türkiye of EU political conditionality, Brussels’ shortcomings regarding a common security and foreign policy and the rise in Türkiye’s military and economic capabilities. This paper focuses on Afro-Cypriots, whose ancestors came to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus during the Ottoman period. The paper contributes to extant literature by exploring the impact of colonialism, racism, and slavery by questioning the ways Afro-Cypriots navigate their identities within the particular context of North Cyprus. By de-emphasizing the ethnic division of Turkish and Greek Cypriot identities, this paper focuses on the shifts from double consciousness to developing Afro-Cypriot consciousness. A rich methodology of oral history interview analyses from 20 Black Cypriots and a life-story narrative of a pioneering Black Cypriot expose the communal and familial microaggressions towards darker skin tones. We explore how colonial construction of ethnicity as a master status creates double consciousness for Black Cypriots. Cyprus Government Railway (CGR), which operated between 1905-1951 was constructed during the British Colonial period. Railway heritage is important, since it is part of the common cultural heritage of both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities living on the island. However, division of the island is a challenge to the conservation of the railway heritage. Unfortunately, little effort has been made by the two communities to document, preserve and reuse railway heritage buildings and related structures. The main goal of the paper is to raise the awareness of the railway heritage in Cyprus and to propose strategies to use this common heritage as a tool for reconciliation in a divided island. The method of the study included archive survey conducted to identify original railway buildings and structures. Secondly, field studies were completed in order to record the present day condition of the railway heritage. Lastly, a vision for the future of the shared heritage has been put forward for inter-communal benefit. CGR is a shared heritage of the both the communities. Due to its potential to contribute to the reconciliation of the society, conservation of the railway heritage is crucial in terms of transferring the culture to the next generations. This study investigated whether the associations between parental distress with conduct problems (CPs) and prosocial behaviors (PBs) are moderated by children's skin conductance (SC) and heart rate (HR) reactivity to fear. Participants were 147 Greek‐Cypriot children (Mage = 7.30, 44.2% girls), selected from a larger screening sample (data were collected from 2015 to 2018). Longitudinal associations suggested that children with high HR reactivity to fear were more likely to display PB, whereas those with low SC reactivity were more likely to engage in CP behaviors. In contrast, interaction effects suggested that children high on SC reactivity to fear were more susceptible to the effects of parental distress, as indicated by their higher vulnerability to engage in CP (cross‐sectionally) behaviors and their lower scores on PB (cross‐sectionally and longitudinally). We propose genetic social psychology as a theoretical framework to render intelligible both the suppression of the expression of prejudice and prejudice reduction in childhood. In particular, we explore the role of positive in-group norms in prejudice reduction in childhood and adolescence and their interplay with realistic and symbolic threats and subgroup identification in the post-conflict setting of Cyprus in a sample of 303 (51.5% female) 7–12-year-old students (mean age = 8.73 SD = 1.58) and 387 (60.2% female) 12–17-year-old students (mean age = 14.24 SD = 1.45) collected from a random sample of thirty-nine schools in the Greek Cypriot community. The following hypotheses were tested (a) threats and social identification will form a closer link with prejudice in older than younger children (H1), (b) positive in-group norms will "trump" threats in relation to the expression of prejudice in older children (H2), (c) strength of identification would enhance the effect of positive in-group norms in the expression of non-prejudicial views (H3), and finally (d) strength of identification would enhance the impact of positive norms on prejudice reduction in childhood, through a deeper conversion process of threat reduction, whereas on the contrary, it will diminish their impact in adolescence through ideological resistance (H4). This article is based on research conducted in a small fishing community in Cyprus. It seeks to explore through an intergenerational and biographical approach how three generations of Greek Cypriot males belonging to fishing families create a meaningful sense of identity through their attachment to place and the fishing profession. The article analyses these three generations' childhood experiences, their social relationships and the processes of learning and knowledge transmission at work, to trace inter- and intra-generational changes and continuities and to offer a more nuanced understanding of the younger generation's sense of identity and belonging in light of ongoing structural changes. Findings pinpoint the centrality of place – land and sea – in all generations' sense of belonging and a strong sense of attachment to fishing which is, however, impacting the younger generation's professional orientations at an emotional level, given that fishing is no longer viable as a profession. This study aims to investigate the perception and production of the English /ɪ/–/iː/ vowel contrast by Cypriot Greek speakers of English as a second language (L2). The participants completed a classification test in which they classified the L2 vowels in terms of their first language (L1) categories, a discrimination test in which they distinguished the members of the vowel contrast, and a production test in which they produced the target vowels. The results showed that they classified both L2 /ɪ/–/iː/ mostly in terms of L1 /i/, which denotes the formation of a completely overlapping contrast according to the theoretical framework of the Universal Perceptual Model (UPM), and that they could hardly distinguish the vowel pair. In addition, their productions deviated in most acoustic parameters from the corresponding productions of English controls. The findings suggest that /ɪ/–/iː/ may carry a universal marker of difficulty for speakers with L1s that do not possess this contrast. This distinction is difficult even for experienced L2 speakers probably because they had never been exposed to naturalistic L2 stimuli and they do not use the L2 that much in their daily life. Finally, the study verifies UPM's predictions about the discriminability of the contrast and extends the model's implications to speech production; when an L2 vowel contrast is perceived as completely overlapping, speakers activate a (near-) unified interlinguistic exemplar in their vowel space, which represents both L2 vowels. The purpose of this paper is to examine changing heritage language practices across multiple generations of Greek-Cypriot migrants in the United Kingdom. It is now well established that language serves as one of the key markers of ethnic identity in migrant families. As a result, migrant communities often strive to transmit and maintain the heritage language among successive generations. However, less is known about the ways in which later-generations experience and practice heritage languages, particularly child members of families, and how this affects the development of the ethnic identity and feelings of belonging. Evidence from in-depth interviews with three generations of Greek-Cypriot families living in the UK is used to address this gap. In doing so, the relationship between language and intergenerationality is traced to examine how linguistic capital is transmitted, transformed and negotiated between generations and across space. Background: Anxiety is increasingly acknowledged as a common mental health issue during the perinatal period. Its prevalence as well as the associated adverse effects constitute screening imperative. This study evaluates the psychometric properties and underlying factor structures of a Greek version of GAD-7 among pregnant and postpartum women (up to 6 months) in Cyprus.Methods: This study was conducted from June to December 2020. A total of 457 Cypriot women in the perinatal period (222 pregnant and 235 postpartum) were surveyed. The assessment included anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (EPDS), and psychosocial factors related with anxiety. The internal consistency and factor structure of GAD-7 were evaluated using reliability coefficients, Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega, and factor analysis, both Exploratory as well as Confirmatory.Results: GAD-7 demonstrated good internal consistency (α = 0.907; Ω = 0.909). Horn's parallel analysis indicated a single factor as the most appropriate. CFA using the standard ML method indicated a good model fit, χ2 = 21.207, p = 0.096; CFI = 0.999; SRMR = 0.027. More studies are needed to determinate the cut-off point and the maximisation of the scale's sensitivity and specificity in pregnant and postpartum Greek Cypriot women.Conclusions: GAD-7 is a valid and reliable measure and healthcare professionals should utilize GAD-7 as a standard instrument for the screening of anxiety symptoms in pregnant and postpartum Greek Cypriot women. "The Evolution of the Political, Social and Economic Life of Cyprus, 1191–1950" by Sakellaropoulos is a book that aims to fill a gap in historical accounts of Cyprus by examining the interplay between external and internal forces over a long period of time. The book takes a Marxist perspective and explores the political, social, and economic life of the island. While the book covers a lengthy period of nine centuries, it focuses more on the eight decades of British rule. The author argues that the transformation of Cypriot society is a result of the interplay between external and internal forces. The book is a work of synthesis and combines theoretical overviews with historical examples. It is an important and timely study that provides fresh perspectives on the history of Cyprus. BACKGROUND: Intuitive eating is defined by eating response to physiological hunger and satiety cues rather than situational or emotional cues and it has been linked to psychological well-being. The 23-item Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is commonly used to assess the concept of intuitive eating. OBJECTIVE: To develop the Greek version of the IES-2 questionnaire and to test its psychometric qualities. METHODS: Forward and backward translations into Greek and English were completed. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was applied to understand the underlying factor structure of the IES-2, whilst internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha test. The concurrent validity was assessed by evaluating the correlation among the IES-2 and the Eating Attitudes Test-26 Item (EAT-26) questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 379 adults (mean age = 34 years) participated. EFA gave a three-factor structure with the total variance explained being 54.4%. Cronbach's alpha was 0.87 for the IES-2 total score, as well as 0.90, 0.84 and 0.70 for the IES-2 subscales. The revised IES-2 total score was significantly correlated with EAT-26 total score (rs = -0.46, p < 0.01) and BMI (rs = -0.46, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: In this sample, the Greek version of the IES-2 showed good psychometric qualities and can be regarded a helpful tool for examining adult intuitive eating behaviours. • L2 English vowel acquisition is challenging for Greek-Cypriot learners. • The L1 influences both perception and production of L2 segments. • L1 articulatory routines are used in L2 vowel production. • Orthographic and contextual effects do not affect overall perception and production. Acquiring L2 segments is particularly challenging for L2 learners, especially when the L1 and L2 inventories involve different contrasts and acoustic cues. The present research investigated the perception and production of L2 English vowels by adult Greek-Cypriot learners and examined the effects of orthographic cues and consonantal context in their performance. Perceptual performance was assessed through a forced-choice identification task and production performance through a wordlist-reading and an elicitation task, both analyzed acoustically and through intelligibility ratings. The findings showed the influence of the L1 on both the perception and production of L2 segments, supporting the assumptions of current models of speech perception and production. Learners faced challenges in perceiving the members of L2 contrasts and mostly used their L1 articulatory routines in their productions of L2 vowels. Orthographic cues or consonantal context did not significantly affect learners' productions or overall perception, although strong contextual effects were observed in individual target vowels. This study is the first to provide an in-depth comparison of CYG and English vowels as well as an examination of the acquisition of L2 English vowels by this population, which can guide EFL teachers and course developers in developing appropriate EFL curricula that incorporate pronunciation instruction. This study investigates the speech rate of Cypriot Greek-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD) as well as the effect of age and gender. The participants were 16 children with DLD aged 4 years 11 months to 8 years 1 month and 22 children with typical language development (TLD) aged 4 years 5 months to 8 years 7 months. Both groups were divided into younger and older groups. All children participated in a storytelling task, and measurements were conducted based on syllables and words per second. The results indicated significant differences between children with DLD and children with TLD in the speech rate, but no differences between younger and older and male and female children of both groups. The stagnancy of speech rate across different age groups demonstrates that children with DLD follow similar developmental trajectories as children with TLD and that speech rate is not affected by gender. Rural-vernacular house is shaped in line with the needs of the physical and socio-cultural environment and according to socio-economic factors; inevitably, it is undergoing an accelerated change. From this point of view, this study aims to focus on Cyprus, which is a quite interesting context, and targets to investigate the spatial change of rural-vernacular housing. Accordingly, it first aims to introduce basic housing typologies supported by unique spatial use. Following this, it primarily aims to introduce the basic housing and related space typologies supported by the original spatial use; to determine and discuss to what extent these typologies have changed; and how this change differs regarding to the peculiar characteristics of the basic types. Within the scope of this study, Büyükkonuk Village (Kom-i Kebir), which has sustained the characteristics of rural-vernacular architecture in Cyprus to the present, was chosen for field research. The houses here were built mainly by Turkish and Greek Cypriots. Today, they are used by Turkish Cypriots and Turks that emigrated from Turkey after 1974 who possess Turkish Cypriot citizenship. It is a known fact that, due to changing living conditions and the change in user profile, they are facing serious spatial and functional changes. Within the village dwelling texture, housing units that displayed identifiable changes were selected among the three most common types of Cypriot ruralvernacular residential architecture. In this context, the space syntax analysis method was used, in order to compare the original spatial organization of the 'units without halls' formed by closed spaces around courtyard, 'units with inner halls' and 'units with outer halls' formed by both closed spaces and semi-open spaces around courtyard, with their current changed states. This study aims to determine the effect of language varieties on the spectral distribution of stressed and unstressed sonorants (nasals /m, n/, lateral approximants /l/, and rhotics /r/) and their coarticulatory effects on adjacent sounds. To quantify the shape of the spectral distribution, we calculated the spectral moments from the sonorant spectra of nasals /m, n/, lateral approximants /l/, and rhotics /r/ produced by Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek speakers. To estimate the co-articulatory effects of sonorants on the adjacent vowels' F1 - F4 formant frequencies, we developed polynomial models of the adjacent vowel's formant contours. All sonorants had distinct effects on adjacent vowel formant contours, especially for F3 and F4. The study highlights that the combination of spectral moments and coarticulatory effects of sonorants determines sonorants' linguistic (stress and phonemic category) and sociolinguistic (language variety) characteristics. There is growing interest in geography in the intersections of age, family and the lifecourse with migration. This paper furthers this work by focusing on the themes of intergenerational relationships and transmission within migrant families that have three generations. Using a case study of Greek-Cypriot families living in the UK, specifically the paper explores the experiences of second-generation and third-generation women, as young adults and as mothers, within the context of their relationships with their family members who were born outside of the UK. The gendered networks of power within Greek-Cypriot intergenerational migrant families are examined, with a particular focus on how these impact young women's everyday spatialities and influence their own experiences and practices of motherhood. The paper shows how difference is brought about, played out, contested and accepted between women. This article discusses the possibility of developing an understanding of the concept of authenticity through the understanding of authenticity in architectural terms, specifically religious heritage buildings in areas of political conflict. Although authenticity has been a continuous subject of debate in the field of heritage studies, however, we argue that difficulties in coming to terms with its application in areas of conflict are still persistent. The study uses the case study of the Agios Synesios Church in North Cyprus, built around the Twelfth century, and is still in use by the Greek Cypriot minorities who continued to live on the island following its division in 1974 and the forced displacement of both Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities to either part of the island. Based on observation of the church and its surrounding context, the research shows that coming to terms with authenticity is problematic for the church since the prolongation of the Greek Cypriot way of life has been compromised due to political fluctuations. The argument suggests that once the authenticity of a religious building is assessed as a heritage asset, a flexible concept of authenticity is essential to consider in areas of political conflicts especially when its original context no longer exists.
