The objective was to compare the effects of sodium selenite (SS) and Sel-Plex® (SP) on dry matter intake (DMI), daily weight gain (DWG), feed conversion (FC), carcass yield, Se in serum, muscle, albumin, and globulins in Pelibuey lambs. Fifty (50) animals (LW=23.0 ± 1.1 kg; 5 to 6 mo) were stratified and randomly assigned to one of five treatments (n=10): 1) Basal diet, C); 2) C + 0.30 mg kg-1 DM of SS, 30SS; 3) C + 0.90 mg kg-1 DM of SS, 90SS; 4) C + 0.30 mg kg-1 DM of SP, 30SP; and 5) C + 0.90 mg kg-1 DM of SP, 90SP. There was no effect (P>0.05) on DMI; while 90SP and 30SS showed higher DWGs (293 and 260 vs 245, 243, and 230 g d-1; P<0.05) compared to the other treatments. FC was better for 90SP and C. Final LWs, carcass yields and dorsal fat were not affected (P>0.05). In the Longissimus dorsi, 30SP increased (P<0.05) Se with respect to 90SP and C and was similar with 30SS and 90SS. There was no effect (P>0.05) on the Gluteus maximus and Musculus deltoideus. Albumin was higher with 30SP and 90SS; while α-globulin was higher with 30SS and 90SP. In conclusion, 0.90 mg of SP improved DWG and FC. Selenite and SP increased Se in serum up to 0.30, and it decreased with 0.90 mg per kilogram of SP. In the Longissimus dorsi, Se was improved in 30SP with respect to 90SP and C and was not similar to 90SS and 30SS. The organic Se of 90SP improved the level of albumin and α-globulins. • Rotatinuous stocking is a grazing management innovation based on animal behaviour. • Grazing management affects faecal N excretion and GHG emissions by sheep. • Faecal N excretion by grazing sheep is greater under Rotatinuous stocking. • Faecal CH 4 and N 2 O emissions by grazing sheep are greater under Rotatinuous stocking. Rotatinuous stocking (RN) management is based on animal ingestive behaviour responses, where optimal pre- and post-grazing sward heights are defined to increase nutrient intake per unit of grazing time. We hypothesized that the optimal sward structure and consequently, a high herbage nutritive value in RN treatment results in a greater faecal nitrogen (N) excretion by sheep and consequently, a greater faecal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with the traditional rotational stocking (RT) management, which is based on a maximum herbage accumulation and harvest. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two grazing management strategies (RN and RT) on the amount of dry matter (DM) faecal excretion, faecal N excretion and faecal GHG (CH 4 and N 2 O) emissions from growing sheep grazing Italian ryegrass pastures. In order to evaluate faecal production and N excretion per animal and per ha, a first experiment (1) was carried out: RT - pre and post-grazing sward heights of 25 and 5 cm, respectively and, RN - pre and post-grazing sward heights of 18 and 11 cm, respectively. A second experiment (2) was carried out to measure the CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes from faeces, using the static chamber method. Daily DM faecal and N excretion per animal were higher (P < 0.001) in RN compared with RT treatment. However, when considered daily DM faecal and N excretion per ha, results were lower (P < 0.001) for the RN than the RT treatment. CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from faeces were higher (P < 0.001) in RN compared with RT treatment, both per animal and per hectare. In conclusion, our study showed that the RN grazing management, based on animal behaviour, resulted in a higher daily N excretion per animal and higher CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from faeces of sheep grazing Italian ryegrass pastures. This study contributes to improve GHG national inventories for the subtropical Brazilian climatic conditions, where estimations from CH 4 and N 2 O emissions factors for faeces from growing sheep grazing Italian ryegrass are markedly lower than the values reported by IPCC Default Tier 1. Twenty-four lambs (Pelibuey x East Friesian), weighing 22.7 ± 3.2 kg, were fed a basal diet of corn silage, oat hay, alfalfa hay, and concentrate (60% forage and 40% concentrate). Treatments consisted of oral doses of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) (0 and 1.5 g/day) and herbal choline (biocholine) (0 and 4 g/day) in a completely random block design with factorial arrangement of treatments, where lambs were blocked by sex. The experiment was conducted for 60 days, and measurements of live weight and dry matter intake were obtained. No effects of the treatments were observed on performance variables (lamb growth, consumption and feed conversion). Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were increased by biocholine and unaffected by methionine (Met). Biocholine increased glucose and cholesterol, whereas methionine increased triglycerides, albumin and plasma protein. The dietary supplementation with biocholine and RPM did not improve lambs' growth; however, biocholine and Met showed a lipotropic effect by mobilizing NEFA and stimulating glucose and cholesterol synthesis. This research was performed to study the effect of feeding ammoniated wheat straw and its mixture with Cassava or/and Acacia Saligna on methane emission and growth performance of Barki lambs under semi-arid condition. The study conducted at Animal Production Research Station, Borg El Arab, belonging to Animal Production Research Institute, Agricultural Research Center, Egypt. A total number of twenty five Barki lambs were randomly allocated into six groups. These animals often depend on low quality crop residues and limited feed supplement. Egyptian desert consider a source of tannin-ferrous plants (TFP) along the year. These plants had lot of nutritive problems need to solve before depending on them as a fodder. In vitro experiments conducted to evaluate the effect of several mixtures of TFP with urea treated wheat straw (TWS) on dry matter degradation, ammonia-N and methane production. Six treatments were examined(G1) CFM+ Acacia Saligna (A): TW Sat (50:50), (G2) CFM+ Prosopis Juliflora (P): TWS at (50:50), (G3) CFM+ Cassava (C): TWS at (50:50), (G4) CFM+ A: P: TWS at (25: 25: 50), (G5) CFM+ A: C: TWS at (25: 25: 50) and (G6) CFM+ P: C: TWS at (25: 25: 50), respectively. Samples of each forage type collected after 0, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h of incubation for determination of cumulative gas production. In addition, thirty growing male Barki lambs, aged average 3 months were used to study the effect of the tested rations on growth performance. The results showed that the condensed tannin (CT) content ranged from 20 (A: C: TWS -G5) to 30 g/kg DM (Acacia saligna). Methane production per unit of fermented DM was inversely related to protein solubility. G1showed a lower (P<0.01) ruminal NH3-N concentration which associated with the decrease (P<0.01) in rumen protein degradability. After 24 h of in vitro incubation, CH4 production was17, 18, 17, 15, 13 and 14 ml, for all groups, respectively. Daily body gains were significantly affected by tested rations. The highest values recorded with G 5. Consequently, consumption of combination of TFP containing various classes of secondary components with resource of NPN leads to reduce CH4 emission from ruminants and improve lamb growth performance. The present study was conducted to find out the effect of supplementing defatted and detoxified neem ( Azadirachta indica ) seed cake as a partial replacement of soybean meal (SBM) in the diet of growing lambs. Male lambs of uniform body weight (8.31 ± 0.32 kg) were randomly allotted to three groups such as control (diet containing SBM) and two test diets with defatted and detoxified neem cake (DNC) at two levels (34 g and 68 g per kg of diet) replacing 25% and 50% nitrogen of SBM (DNC-25 and DNC-50). The respective diets (concentrate mixtures along with finger millet ( Eleucine corocana ) straw) were fed individually to lambs for a period of 140 days. The repeated measure ANOVA indicated that lambs on DNC treatments grew on par with control across all the periods and no interaction was observed. The difference in the dry matter intake was not found to be significant ( P > 0.05) in any of the three study groups. Similarly apparent nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance, rumen and hormonal profiles did not differ ( P > 0.05) across the groups. Humoral and cell mediated immune response measured in terms of antibody titre and lymphocyte proliferation assay was also the same ( P > 0.05) across the groups. The relative gene expression of IGF-I and LHR transcripts in testes tissue was positively influenced ( P < 0.05) in DNC-50 treatment (3–4 fold increase) as compared to control and DNC-25. No histopathological changes were observed in vital organs of sheep fed DNC diets compared to control. It can be concluded that based on the studied parameters, DNC can replace 50% of SBM nitrogen with 3–4 fold increase in gene expression in testes tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to identify the effect of high alpine grazing, associated with varying pasture grass qualities and more pronounced exercise on typically steep slopes, on bone metabolism by improving bone density and enhancing bone turnover in growing sheep. Twenty-four 5-month-old sheep were randomly assigned to two groups. One group was kept at high altitude (HA; 2000-2200 m a.s.l.) for 3 months, and the other group (C; control) remained in the lowlands (400 m a.s.l.). Both groups were kept in grazing pastures with access to good-quality swards. Before the start of the experiment, blood samples were taken, the sheep were weighed, and the left metatarsus of each animal was analysed by quantitative computer tomography. After 1 month, blood samples were taken and body weight was measured, followed by biweekly sampling. Finally, the animals were slaughtered, and the bones were collected for analysis of various bone parameters. Body weight development did not differ between the groups. Concentrations of 25-OH-Vitamin D, carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen and activities of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase were always higher in the HA group than in the C group, except on the last two sampling dates. Bone mineral content and density increased in both groups during the experiment, but more intensively in the HA group. In addition, the cortical thickness of the HA group increased. The present study demonstrates an increase in bone turnover and mineral content of the bones of the growing sheep grazing in high alpine pastures.
