Annually laminated sediments (varves) form in particular depositional settings, e.g., where seasonal climate produces fluctuations in runoff volume; variations in runoff affect the amount and type of sediment delivered to a catchment. Prior studies confirm that variations in selected varve traits correlate with inter-annual climate signals. In some locations, solar activity also appears to be expressed in varve characteristics, either through a direct effect or indirectly via influence of solar activity on climate. Evidence from proglacial Iceberg Lake, Alaska, indicates that solar activity may have directly contributed to varve deposition. A varve thickness sequence is compared to sunspot observations from 1610–1995 CE. Maunder and Dalton minima are clearly expressed in a varve power spectrogram; varve signal amplification beginning ca. 1950s CE coincides with increasing activity evident in a sunspot spectrogram, features that are only vaguely discernible in the raw time-series plots. Spectral relationships at sunspot periodicities are consistent with direct solar forcing of varve thickness, independent of any effect solar activity might otherwise have on climate. Simulations based on a meltwater model indicate that direct forcing could result from amplified ultraviolet (UV) emission during solar maxima, combined with lower UV albedo of glacial ice. The plausible forcing mechanism bolsters epistemology for concluding a cause–effect relationship: solar variability likely contributed directly to inter-decadal patterns in Iceberg Lake varve thicknesses. The putative effect could be enhanced at higher latitudes, where Earth's atmosphere absorbs less of the UV energy emitted by the Sun; periods of lowered ozone concentration near the poles would exacerbate the natural abetting UV phenomena, potentially linking human activity to recent and accelerated polar ice cap melting. Directed energy for planetary defense is now a viable option and is superior in many ways to other proposed technologies, being able to defend the Earth against all known threats. This paper presents basic ideas behind a directed energy planetary defense system that utilizes laser ablation of an asteroid to impart a deflecting force on the target. A conceptual philosophy called DE-STAR, which stands for Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploration, is an orbiting stand-off system, which has been described in other papers. This paper describes a smaller, stand-on system known as DE-STARLITE as a reduced-scale version of DE-STAR. Both share the same basic heritage of a directed energy array that heats the surface of the target to the point of high surface vapor pressure that causes significant mass ejection thus forming an ejection plume of material from the target that acts as a rocket to deflect the object. This is generally classified as laser ablation. DE-STARLITE uses conventional propellant for launch to LEO and then ion engines to propel the spacecraft from LEO to the near-Earth asteroid (NEA). During laser ablation, the asteroid itself provides the propellant source material; thus a very modest spacecraft can deflect an asteroid much larger than would be possible with a system of similar mission mass using ion beam deflection (IBD) or a gravity tractor. DE-STARLITE is capable of deflecting an Apophis-class (325 m diameter) asteroid with a 1- to 15-year targeting time (laser on time) depending on the system design. The mission fits within the rough mission parameters of the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) program in terms of mass and size. DE-STARLITE also has much greater capability for planetary defense than current proposals and is readily scalable to match the threat. It can deflect all known threats with sufficient warning. Asteroids and comets that cross Earth's orbit pose a credible risk of impact, with potentially severe disturbances to Earth and society. We propose an orbital planetary defense system capable of heating the surface of potentially hazardous objects to the vaporization point as a feasible approach to impact risk mitigation. We call the system DE-STAR, for Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation. The DE-STAR is a modular-phased array of kilowatt class lasers powered by photovoltaic's. Modular design allows for incremental development, minimizing risk, and allowing for technological codevelopment. An orbiting structure would be developed in stages. The main objective of the DE-STAR is to use focused directed energy to raise the surface spot temperature to ~3000 K, sufficient to vaporize all known substances. Ejection of evaporated material creates a large reaction force that would alter an asteroid's orbit. The baseline system is a DE-STAR 3 or 4 (1- to 10-km array) depending on the degree of protection desired. A DE-STAR 4 allows initial engagement beyond 1 AU with a spot temperature sufficient to completely evaporate up to 500-m diameter asteroids in 1 year. Rhythmically deposited argillites of the Gowganda Formation (ca. 2.0–2.5 Ga) probably formed in a glacial setting. Drop stones and layered sedimentary couplets in the rock presumably indicate formation in a lacustrine environment with repeating freeze–thaw cycles. It is plausible that temporal variations in the thickness of sedimentary layers are related to interannual climatic variability, e.g. average seasonal temperature could have influenced melting and the amount of sediment source material carried to the lake. A sequence of layer couplet thickness measurements was made from high-resolution digitized photographs taken at an outcrop in southern Ontario, Canada. The frequency spectrum of thickness measurements displays patterns that resemble some aspects of modern climate. Coherent periodic modes in the thickness spectrum appear at 9.9–10.7 layer couplets and at 14.3 layer couplets. It is unlikely that these coherent modes result from random processes. Modern instrument records of regional temperature and rainfall display similar spectral patterns, with some datasets showing significant modes near 14 yr in both parameters. Rainfall and temperature could have affected sedimentary layering in the Gowganda argillite sequence, and climate modulation of couplet thickness emerges as the most likely explanation of the observed layering pattern. If this interpretation is correct, the layer couplets represent predominantly annual accumulations of sediment (i.e. they are varves), and the thickness spectrum provides a glimpse of Early Proterozoic climatic variability. The presence of interannual climate patterns is not unanticipated, but field evidence presented here may be of some value in developing a climate theory for the Early Proterozoic. A novel method is described for remotely interrogating bulk molecular composition of rocky materials. Laser energy heats a local area on the substrate; flux is optimized to melt and evaporate target constituents with low rates of molecular dissociation. Substrate temperature rises until an equilibrium is established between incident flux and latent phase-change energies, reaching ˜2500 K in vacuum. A blackbody signal is emitted by the heated spot, traveling outward through the evaporated material; reflective optics direct the signal into a spectrometer. Ro-vibrational absorption in the plume provides a diagnostic for identifying bulk molecular composition of the substrate. Absorption spectra are modeled for compounds with available a priori molecular cross-sections, based on laser and receiver characteristics, and target material properties. Mass ejection flux drives the plume density profile. Qualitative, species-specific spectral profiles are derived by integrating molecular cross section along a path through the plume. This manuscript reports on two Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) polymeric molecular chains so-called 1101AT and D0243, used to modify a 50/70 pen grade neat asphalt binder sample, generating the matrixes 60/85 E and Highly Modified Asphalt (HiMA), respectively. Some research gaps still exist and need to be investigated further, principally on why and how these distinct molecular chains influence the rheological-mechanical behavior of the asphalt binders and asphalt mixes, even pertaining to the same polymeric group. Dynamic Shear Rheometric (DSR) analyses describe the rheological spectra of the binder samples, considering the dynamic stiffness modulus in the complex plane |G*|. Porous asphalt mixes were evaluated considering the French formulation methodology and the following aspects: compaction ability, deleterious action of water, seepage speed and resistance to rutting. The results obtained indicate that HiMA matrix presented superior long-term rheological and mechanical behavior compared to 60/85 E, due to the more elaborate polymeric chain being associated to a bituminous matrix with rheological spectra providing less thermal and kinetic susceptibility, although its highest dynamic viscosity implies little reduction in the air void content and, consequently, lower seepage speeds to the porous asphalt mixes, but greater rutting resistance. French aeronautical design methodology was taken as reference. Field and laboratory procedures were employed to determine constituent materials of the designed structure. Stationary linear elastic and dynamic viscoelastic numerical damage analyses were developed and compared, using computerized tools based on 3D Finite Element Methods. Results indicate that viscoelastic analyses provide more discriminating assessment of damage phenomena along the depth of pavement layers, and that landing gear geometric characteristics are more diagnostic than aircraft gross weight for cumulative damage propagation.
