Nearly all eukaryotes carry DNA transposons of the Robertson's Mutator (Mu) superfamily, a widespread source of genome instability and genetic variation. Despite their pervasive impact on host genomes, much remains unknown about the evolution of these transposons. Transposase recognition of terminal inverted repeats (TIRs) is thought to drive and constrain coevolution of MuDR transposase genes and TIRs. To address the extent of this relationship and its impact, we compared separate phylogenies of TIRs and MuDR gene sequences from Mu elements in the maize genome. Five major clades were identified. As expected, most Mu elements were bound by highly similar TIRs from the same clade (homomorphic type). However, a subset of elements contained dissimilar TIRs derived from divergent clades. These "heteromorphs" typically occurred in multiple copies indicating active transposition in the genome. In addition, analysis of internal sequences showed that exchanges between elements having divergent TIRs produced new mudra and mudrb gene combinations. In several instances, TIR homomorphs had been regenerated within a heteromorph clade with retention of distinctive internal MuDR sequence combinations. Results reveal that recombination between divergent clades facilitates independent evolution of transposase (mudra), transposase-binding targets (TIRs), and capacity for insertion (mudrb) of active Mu elements. This mechanism would be enhanced by the preference of Mu insertions for recombination-rich regions near the 5' ends of genes. We suggest that cycles of recombination give rise to alternating homo-and heteromorph forms that enhance the diversity on which selection for Mu fitness can operate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interest is growing in the dark side of creativity and recent research has been instrumental in improving our understanding of the phenomenon. However, such efforts have also revealed confusion regarding the definition and operationalization of the dark side of creativity and malevolent creativity in particular. In response, we offer definitional clarity for both the generation of novel, malevolent ideas (i.e., malevolent creativity) as well as the implementation of those ideas (i.e., malevolent innovation). In addition, we present a framework outlining how and why malevolent ideas transition from ideation to implementation. This framework considers influences linked to both ability and willingness to engage in malevolent processes, spanning intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. Our review reveals a complex but tenuous link between malevolent creativity and innovation and one that requires consideration of the processes connecting the two. Moreover, our review of the malevolent creative processes suggest that we have unintentionally avoided uncomfortable truths around who is capable of generating and instantiating malevolent ideas. Aeolian sand dunes on the Broughton Island are heavily disturbed by nesting birds and invaded by Opuntia stricta (Prickly Pear). Biological control agents do not establish well on exposed coastal systems and thus herbicide treatment is currently the main control, but it is expensive in terms of resource allocation. Invasive species are generally considered by many to be controlled at all cost but in many situations, they are benign or even beneficial. We test if O. stricta causes significant change to the vegetation on aeolian sands on Broughton Island. 40100 m2 plots were placed randomly over areas of differing cover of O. stricta. Within these plots additional six subplots of 4 m2 were placed. All flora species were scored for cover. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed testing the effects of O. stricta on floristic composition and species density and turnover. Regression models showed a non-significant (r2 = 0.95; P = 0.0557) negative effect of O. stricta cover on species density at the 100 m2 plot size and at the 4 m2 scale (r2 = 0.013; P = 0.0858). Global comparison of species density between plots with and without O. stricta at the 4 m2 scale was non-significant. Homogenisation occurred (lowered beta diversity) across plots with O. stricta presence at the 4 m2 scale. More species had their average cover reduced by O. stricta presence than those that were benefited. The scale at which the investigation was undertaken (4 or 100 m2; species density and beta diversity) affected the magnitude and significance of O. stricta on the results obtained. The scale at which investigations are made was found to be of importance. Overall, although negative changes were noted in flora species diversity and homogenisation was apparent the negative impact may not be sufficient to justify the costs and resources needed to control the species which is unlikely to be eradicated from the site. Opuntia stricta was found to be associated with homogenisation within the dunal communities in which it commonly dominated. However, the magnitude of these effects on diversity and the inability to eradicate the species may not constitute effective use of labour, funds and time and the potential detrimental effects of long-term use of herbicides. Design researchers have long sought to understand the mechanisms that support creative idea development. However, one of the key challenges faced by the design community is how to effectively measure the nebulous construct of creativity. The social science and engineering communities have adopted two vastly different approaches to solving this problem, both of which have been deployed throughout engineering design research. The goal of this paper was to compare and contrast these two approaches using design ratings of nearly 1000 engineering design ideas. The results of this study identify that while these two methods provide similar ratings of idea quality, there was a statistically significant negative relationship between these methods for ratings of idea novelty. In addition, the results show discrepancies in the reliability and consistency of global ratings of creativity. To grow and thrive plants must be able to adapt to both adverse environmental conditions and attack by a variety of pests. Elucidating the sophisticated mechanisms plants have developed to achieve this has been the focus of many studies. What is less well understood is how plants respond when faced with multiple stressors simultaneously. In this study, we assess the response of Zea mays (maize) to the combinatorial stress of flooding and infestation with the insect pest Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm). This combined stress leads to elevated production of the defence hormone salicylic acid, which does not occur in the individual stresses, and the resultant salicylic acid‐dependent increase in S. frugiperda resistance. Remodelling of phenylpropanoid pathways also occurs in response to this combinatorial stress leading to increased production of the anti‐insect C‐glycosyl flavones (maysins) and the herbivore‐induced volatile phenolics, benzyl acetate, and phenethyl acetate. Furthermore, changes in cellular redox status also occur, as indicated by reductions in peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase activity. These data suggest that metabolite changes important for flooding tolerance and anti‐insect defence may act both additively and synergistically to provide extra protection to the plant. Flooding stress in Zea mays leads to a salicylic acid‐dependent increase in resistance to the insect pest Spodoptera frugiperda. The purpose of product dissection is to teach students how a product works and provide them with inspiration for new ideas. However, little is known about how variations in dissection activities impact creative outcomes or engineering self-efficacy (ESE) and creative self-efficacies (CSE). This is important since the goal of engineering education is to produce capable and creative engineers. The current study was, thus, developed to address this research gap through a factorial experiment. The results showed that idea development was not impacted by dissection conditions but that ESE and CSE were increased through these activities. The results also showed that higher levels of CSE and ESE had alternate effects on novel idea development indicating they are at odds in engineering education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite its ubiquitous infectivity to mammals with strong host specificity, our current knowledge about Pneumocystis has originated from studies of merely 4% of extant mammalian species. Further studies of Pneumocystis epidemiology across a broader range of animal species require the use of assays with high sensitivity and specificity. To this end, we have developed multiple universal Pneumocystis primers targeting different genetic loci with high amplification efficiency. Application of these primers to PCR investigation of Pneumocystis in free-living hares (Lepus townsendii, n = 130) and rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus, n = 8) in Canada revealed a prevalence of 81% (105/130) and 25% (2/8), respectively. Genotyping analysis identified five and two variants of Pneumocystis from hares and rabbits, respectively, with significant sequence divergence between the variants from hares. Based on phylogenetic analysis using nearly full-length sequences of the mitochondrial genome, nuclear rRNA operon and dihydropteroate synthase gene for the two most common variants, Pneumocystis in hares and rabbits are more closely related to each other than either are to Pneumocystis in other mammals. Furthermore, Pneumocystis in both hares and rabbits are more closely related to Pneumocystis in primates and dogs than to Pneumocystis in rodents. The high prevalence of Pneumocystis in hares (P. sp. 'townsendii') suggests its widespread transmissibility in the natural environment, similar to P. oryctolagi in rabbits. The presence of multiple distinct Pneumocystis populations in hares contrasts with the lack of apparent intra-species heterogeneity in P. oryctolagi, implying a unique evolution history of P. sp. Shrub encroachment is an issue worldwide with consequences which may have both positive and negative outcomes for landscape and community health. Themeda-dominated communities on headlands are listed as endangered within New South Wales, Australia with shrub encroachment listed as threat. Coastal headlands are considered harsh environments and positive effects on species diversity patterns may occur due to variables that ameliorate these conditions or through indirect mechanisms. Shrubs are a natural component of coastal headlands in eastern Australian and tall shrub encroachment may have both positive and negative effects on non-shrub communities. I test whether tall shrubs may have a functional role that positively affects species diversity within and between plots and the distribution of species within Themeda-dominated communities on headlands. 352 2 × 2 m plots were placed on 46 headlands along a 530 km stretch of coastline on the North Coast Bioregion, New South Wales, Australia. Within plots vascular plant species were scored on cover and frequency. Species density, diversity, evenness, turnover and gamma diversity were calculated. Variables tested include cumulative tall shrub height from circular transects at 2, 4 and 8 m from plots, slope, aspect, altitude, ground layer height, distance to closest seaward edge and macropod grazing intensity. Rarefaction was performed on a subset of sites that had no shrubs and sites within shrubs within 8 m of plots. The relative interaction intensity (RII) was calculated for all taxa with more than one observation against plots without shrubs and plots with shrubs within 8 m radius. Analyses were performed using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and Generalised Additive Modelling (GAM) on species frequency data. A total of 303 native taxa were recorded within plots. The most significant positive effects on species density, evenness and species accumulation included increasing proximity to, and density of tall shrubs. Tall shrubs may allow direct facilitation of less stress tolerant plants to colonise but may have an indirect interaction by reduction in the dominance of Themeda triandra. Other minor significant variables included distance from headland seaward edge, southern and western facing slopes, higher altitudes and a decrease in ground layer height. 178 (80%) of species were found to have a positive RII score associated with the presence of nearby taller shrubs. Tall shrubs may directly facilitate greater species diversity by ameliorating local conditions and indirectly facilitate by reducing the over-dominance of some taxa. In spite of the positive effect of shrubs on diversity eventually tall shrub encroachment may cause replacement of the Themeda-dominated communities with shrubland. Encroaching taller shrubs are therefore shown to be both of benefit to floristic species diversity at all scales within these Themeda-dominated communities on headlands in eastern Australia but also a potential threat. We respond to Neil Gibson's reply to our paper "Overview of plot-based classification approaches within Australia" where Gibson advised on the location of plot data held by the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions (DBCA). Based on that advice we have tabulated the available vegetation plot data on DBCA's NatureMap site. NatureMap stores vegetation plot data as Excel files within data directories rather than in a unified database. We accessed 5,318 vegetation plots from 19 flora surveys sourced from NatureMap and a further 1144 from other government or university sources. In addition, we sourced a further 9,588 vegetation survey sites in a privately-held database. We updated the bioregional analyses of plots for WA, outlined in Gellie et al. 2018, using the combined plot data. It is likely additional data exists that would increase the plot density in Western Australian bioregions. Irrespective, our updated analysis of all the plots we located indicates the quantities are well below that required for either supervised or unsupervised vegetation classification, except for a few sub-bioregional areas. From a practical perspective, the plot data held by DCBA as Excel files are not readily available to external users. Few of the WA data are assigned cover or abundance scores with implications for statistical classification of vegetation types. Adopting a sampling protocol that conforms to a national standard would enhance plot data consistency for recording site and floristic attributes. WA DBCA data could more usefully be stored in a properly constructed centralised vegetation plot database containing government and non-government data maintained to agreed standards with protocols for ensuring plant taxonomy is maintained. We review vascular plant plot survey data, plot-based terrestrial vegetation classification protocols and schema by state and bioregions across Australia, discussing recent regional approaches in States and bioregions. A high degree of inconsistency exists in vegetation classification methods and management of plot data across jurisdictions and Australia currently lacks a unified national vegetation plot database, vegetation plot-recording protocols and agreed thematic outputs for classification. Broad-scale classifications were developed largely to support vegetation mapping based on remote sensing of image patterns. Since the 1970s, plot datasets from well-sampled regions have been subjected to a range of analyses (sometimes numerical) producing finer-scaled but idiosyncratic classifications. There are robust numerical classifications for less than 5% of the Australian continent. In poorly sampled and plot-free regions, vegetation classification has focussed on expert description or hybrid approaches using patchy quantitative outputs where they exist. A rigorous quantitative continental regional to local scale approach to classification will not be possible until major data gaps are filled. Additionally, the impact of Australia's inconsistent rainfall on species composition and abundance in analyses of combined datasets requires careful consideration. Given that vegetation classification is integral to Australian biodiversity laws and regulations, there would be benefits in extending quantitative plot coverage to data-poor areas, encouraging cross jurisdictional co-operation of classification procedures, promoting the use of comparable methodologies and sampling under different disturbance and climatic regimes. The development of a consistent vegetation classification across Australia will also require inter-state co-operation, higher standards of plot data curation and plant taxa nomenclature, agreed nation-wide classification protocols and a scientifically defensible hierarchical classification that should integrate with the International Vegetation Classification (IVC). Summary: Maize white seedling 3 (w3) has been used to study carotenoid deficiency for almost 100 years, although the molecular basis of the mutation has remained unknown. Here we show that the w3 phenotype is caused by disruption of the maize gene for homogentisate solanesyl transferase (HST), which catalyzes the first and committed step in plastoquinone‐9 (PQ‐9) biosynthesis in the plastid. The resulting PQ‐9 deficiency prohibits photosynthetic electron transfer and eliminates PQ‐9 as an oxidant in the enzymatic desaturation of phytoene during carotenoid synthesis. As a result, light‐grown w3 seedlings are albino, deficient in colored carotenoids and accumulate high levels of phytoene. However, despite the absence of PQ‐9 for phytoene desaturation, dark‐grown w3 seedlings can produce abscisic acid (ABA) and homozygous w3 kernels accumulate sufficient carotenoids to generate ABA needed for seed maturation. The presence of ABA and low levels of carotenoids in w3 nulls indicates that phytoene desaturase is able to use an alternate oxidant cofactor, albeit less efficiently than PQ‐9. The observation that tocopherols and tocotrienols are modestly affected in w3 embryos and unaffected in w3 endosperm indicates that, unlike leaves, grain tissues deficient in PQ‐9 are not subject to severe photo‐oxidative stress. In addition to identifying the molecular basis for the maize w3 mutant, we: (1) show that low levels of phytoene desaturation can occur in w3 seedlings in the absence of PQ‐9; and (2) demonstrate that PQ‐9 and carotenoids are not required for vitamin E accumulation. Although creativity is commonly thought to be a universally beneficial outcome, a relationship has been found between creativity and deviance. Certain cognitive processes, such as flexible thinking, have been proposed as the connection between creativity and deviance, as creative people often possess the ability to think "outside of the box" and view situations differently than those who are less creative. Despite creative people having flexible thinking, however, not all engage in deviance. We explore possible situational factors that may predict deviance in creative people and test a contextual manipulation aimed at deterring deviance. In agreement with expectations, results show that ambiguous ethical situations, where rules are unclear, provide more of an opportunity for creative people to engage in deviance. In ethically salient conditions, where rules are reinforced, deviance is reduced. Counter to predictions, however, creativity seems to be unaffected or even slightly enhanced by ethically salient conditions. By creating an ethically salient environment, it may be possible to deter deviance while still allowing for creative expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For many terrorist organizations, also known as violent extremist organizations (VEOs), their ability to perpetuate violence is often contingent upon successful recruitment and selection of organizational members. Although academic work on terrorist recruitment and selection has improved in recent years, researchers have generally focused more heavily on aspects of radicalization rather than organization attraction and entry. Moreover, a number of terrorism scholars have lamented the lack of conceptual frameworks with which to interpret and extend findings linked to recruitment and selection, specifically. In light of these difficulties, we propose that considering literature bases outside of terrorism may be useful in extending lines of inquiry and offering alternative ways of thinking about how terrorist organizations operate. Specifically, we draw on Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Human Resource Management, and Organizational Behavior literature bases to offer alternative and extended modes of thought on terrorist recruitment and selection. In doing so, we believe both terrorism and more traditional organizational scholars can make substantive and novel contributions to future investigations of increasingly pressing issues surrounding violent extremism. We surveyed subtropical closed tussock grasslands on headlands within the North Coast Bioregion of New South Wales. The aims of the investigation were to provide baseline data on this listed threatened community. Additionally, we tested 'he effects of macropod grazing and biomass changes on assemblages. In total, 117 full floristic survey plots were placed within extant natural grassland occurrences on 16 headlands. Data collected included the percentage cover and frequency of each species. In addition, we ranked the three species contributing most to overall biomass. Analysis of the full floristic cover data (percentage cover) was performed using the Kulzynski association measure and Unweighted Pair Group Arithmetic Averaging fusion strategy. Further analysis was performed using constrained and unconstrained ordinations and Generalised Additive Modelling using species frequency data and explanatory variables including overall, and proportional species biomass, and macropod grazing impact. Seven distinct grassland assemblages were derived, of which three were Themeda dominated. Concentrating on the Themeda-AommsAsd assemblages, it was found that increasing biomass depth and a reduction in macropod grazing impact were associated with a reduction in plot species richness and diversity and trait richness and diversity. These changes were associated with a shift in floristic assemblage identity. All three Themeda assemblages are likely to provide a unique combination of functional resources anc all should be maintained in order to promote landscape diversity. We predict that use of frequent fire is likely to cause homogenisation (reduced landscape richness) and loss of important components including listed threatened taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In guilds, such as the large predators, species compete over multiple resources that are both consumable and non-consumable. The niche complementary hypothesis states that competitors can overlap in resource use if there is low overlap for at least one shared resource. In Africa, cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus, compete with other large carnivores across space, time and prey and are known to be subordinate; however, rarely has the entire guild been considered when assessing resource partitioning by cheetah. Using camera-trap data from four areas sampled over 4 years, we compared spatial and temporal overlap between cheetah and other large carnivores. Moreover, we estimated short-term avoidance of sites by cheetah after another large carnivore had visited. We show that cheetah align with the niche complementary hypothesis to avoid other large carnivores. Cheetah experienced high overlap with African wild dog, Lycaon pictus, activity patterns but avoided sites that were used frequently by them. The inverse was observed for lion, Panthera leo, and spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta, with cheetah avoiding them across time but not space. Cheetah experienced moderate overlap with leopard, Panthera pardus, across both space and time, with only possible short-term avoidance occurring. Finally, cheetah exhibited high levels of spatial and temporal overlap with preferred prey species, suggesting a novel demonstration of the trade-off between resource acquisition and predator avoidance. Our results showcase the importance of taking multiple scales and resource axes into consideration when determining species abilities to co-exist and provides tools for managers working in highly managed systems. Reliable vegetation maps are an important component of any long-term landscape planning initiatives. A number of approaches are available but one, in particular, pattern recognition (segmentation) combined with modelling from floristic site data, is currently being used to map vegetation across NSW. An independent assessment of this approach based on a review of the Greater Hunter Native Vegetation Mapping ( GHM_v4) was undertaken in order to assess its ability to cater for regional, local, strategic and landscape planning. The validation process tested 2151 locations across the Upper Hunter Valley region of New South Wales ( NSW), Australia. The results suggest that mapping at the coarsest level of NSW vegetation classification, the Formation, is generally poor, with only Dry Sclerophyll Forest and Woodland modelled with some level of reliability. The modelled mapping of individual plant community types ( PCTs) was found to be highly inaccurate with only 17% of validation points attributed as 'correct' and a further 13% 'essentially correct'. Therefore, a majority of PCTs were mapped with an accuracy of less than 30%. The results of this validation suggest that the GHM_v4 is of such a low level of accuracy within the upper Hunter as to be inherently unusable for broad-scale regional and local landscape planning or environmental assessment, including locating compensatory offsets for the loss of native vegetation due to developments. The GHM_v4 methods of pattern recognition of mainly SPOT5 satellite imagery combined with modelling from plot data have not produced reliable vegetation maps of plant community types. We surveyed temperate montane natural grasslands across the New England Tablelands Bioregion (NETB) and assessed the phytosociology, occurrence and threats to these assemblages. In total, 123 full floristic survey plots were placed within natural grasslands across the NETB. Mapping was undertaken within a subset of the NETB using ADS40 imagery. Analysis of the floristic data was performed using the Kulzynski association measure and UPGMA fusion strategy. Canonical correspondence analysis was performed with species data in association with 42 environmental variables. An estimated 25 000 ha of native tussock and sod tussock grasslands within six floristic assemblages were found within the NETB. The maximum extent of predicted high-quality stands may only be 2500 ha with most occurrences degraded and threatened by agricultural practices, exotic species and changes in above- and below-ground water resources. Native taxa were significantly associated with altitude, rock type and differential temperature tolerances. Altitude, eastness (longitude) and radiation of the wettest period were significant drivers of exotic species occurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The focus of this study was to identify leader behaviors that elicit successful engagement of employees with autism spectrum disorder, a population that is powerfully emerging into the workplace. The ultimate goal was to improve the quality of life of employees with autism spectrum disorder by facilitating an environment leading to their success. Through a series of interviews with 54 employees with autism spectrum disorder, results indicated that leadership has a great effect on employee attitudes and performance, and that the notion of leadership preferences is quite complex culminating in several important behaviors rather than one superior leadership theory. The ideal conservation planning approach would enable decision-makers to use population viability analysis to assess the effects of management strategies and threats on all species at the landscape level. However, the lack of high-quality data derived from long-term studies, and uncertainty in model parameters and/or structure, often limit the use of population models to only a few species of conservation concern. We used spatially explicit metapopulation models in conjunction with multi-criteria decision analysis to assess how species-specific threats and management interventions would affect the persistence of African wild dog, black rhino, cheetah, elephant, leopard and lion, under six reserve scenarios, thereby providing the basis for deciding on a best course of conservation action in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, which forms the central component of the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot. Overall, the results suggest that current strategies of managing populations within individual, small, fenced reserves are unlikely to enhance metapopulation persistence should catastrophic events affect populations in the future. Creating larger and better-connected protected areas would ensure that threats can be better mitigated in the future for both African wild dog and leopard, which can disperse naturally, and black rhino, cheetah, elephant, and lion, which are constrained by electric fences but can be managed using translocation. The importance of both size and connectivity should inform endangered megafauna conservation and management, especially in the context of restoration efforts in increasingly human-dominated landscapes. Abstract: We report a study that elucidates key physicochemical phenomena that underlie the dynamics of adsorbate-induced ordering transitions in micrometer-thick films of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) supported on chemically functionalized surfaces. By flowing a gas containing dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) over a film of nematic 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) supported on a surface decorated with aluminum perchlorate, we quantify the dynamics of the optical response (intensity of transmitted light) of the LC film as a function of key experimental parameters, including linear flow rate of the gas over the surface of the film and the concentration of the DMMP within the gas. Building from prior infrared spectroscopic analysis revealing that the optical response of the LC is due to an ordering transition triggered by competitive ligand-exchange reactions at the chemically functionalized surface (i.e., between the phosphonate and nitrile groups of the DMMP and LC, respectively, with the aluminum perchlorate-decorated surface), we interpret the measurements reported herein within the framework of a simple model of mass transport. The model reveals that the rate-limiting process underlying the response of the LC is the mass transport of the DMMP across the concentration boundary layer formed on the vapor side of the LC–vapor interface, and not the mass transport of DMMP across the LC film nor the intrinsic ligand exchange kinetics. The analysis also reveals that the response of the LC is triggered once the concentration of DMMP within the LC film rises to approximately 0.25mM. By flowing a stream of gas free of DMMP over a LC film pre-exposed to DMMP, we established that the relaxation of the LC film to the initial state is also largely controlled by mass transport of the DMMP across the vapor side of the LC–vapor interface. Analysis of the relaxation of the system leads to an estimate of the sensitivity of the supported LC film to the concentration of DMMP in the gas phase (approximately 150ppb for the non-optimized system reported in this paper). These results and others reported in this paper identify key physical phenomena that dictate the dynamics of adsorbate-induced ordering transitions in LC systems, and provide important guidance to the design of LCs as chemo-responsive materials for use in sensors. The Cellulose Synthase-Like D (Cs1D) genes have important, although still poorly defined, roles in cell wall formation. Here, we show an unexpected involvement of Cs1D1 from maize (Zea mays) in cell division. Both division and expansion were altered in the narrow-organ and warty phenotypes of the cs1d1 mutants. Leaf width was reduced by 35%, due mainly to a 47% drop in the number of cell files across the blade. Width of other organs was also proportionally reduced. In leaf epidermis, the deficiency in lateral divisions was only partially compensated by a modest, uniform increase in cell width. Localized clusters of misdivided epidermal cells also led to the formation of warty lesions, with cell clusters bulging from the epidermal layer, and some cells expanding to volumes 75-fold greater than normal. The decreased cell divisions and localized epidermal expansions were not associated with detectable changes in the cell wall composition of cs1d1 leaf blades or epidermal peels, yet a greater abundance of thin, dense walls was indicated by high-resolution x-ray tomography of stems. Cell-level defects leading to wart formation were traced to sites of active cell division and expansion at the bases of leaf blades, where cytokinesis and cross-wall formation were disrupted. Flow cytometry confirmed a greater frequency of polyploid cells in basal zones of leaf blades, consistent with the disruption of cytokinesis and/or the cell cycle ill cs1d1 mutants. Analyses of leopard Panthera pardus prey choice reveal a strong preference for species weighing 10-40 kg. In the Congo Basin rainforests, species within this weight range are also targeted by bushmeat hunters, potentially leading to exploitative competition between leopards and hunters. We investigated leopard prey choice along a gradient of human disturbance, hypothesizing that leopards will exploit smaller prey where competition is strong, possibly resulting in reduced leopard densities at highly hunted sites. We determined leopard diet by means of scat analysis at four rainforest sites in central Gabon, which varied according to their distance from human settlements. Camera trap data collected at each of the four study sites revealed that human hunting intensity increased with proximity to settlements, while the abundance of potential leopard prey species decreased. We found no evidence of leopards at the site nearest to settlements. At the remaining sites, the number of scats collected, mean leopard prey weight and the proportion of large prey (>20 kg) in leopard diet increased with distance from settlements. Camera trap data demonstrated that leopard population density increased with distance from settlements, from 2.7 ± 0.94 leopards/100 km2 to 12.1 ± 5.11 leopards/100 km2. Our results document an increasing use of smaller prey species and a decrease in leopard density in proximity to settlements, supporting our hypothesis. Comparison of leopard diet with hunter return data revealed a high dietary niche overlap between leopards and hunters at sites situated at similar distances from settlements. Our results suggest that bushmeat hunting may precipitate the decline in leopard numbers through exploitative competition and that intensively hunted areas are unlikely to support resident leopard populations. Conserving the leopard in the Congo Basin will rely on effective protected areas and alternative land management strategies that promote regulated human hunting of leopard prey. Leading innovative pursuits requires a unique set of leadership behaviors-behaviors that are frequently at odds with traditional forms of management and organizational functioning. We have identified 14 of these tensions, or paradoxes, associated with leading innovative endeavors categorizing them into four clusters: internal/localized, team-level, organization-level, and situational. In addition, we consider some industry-derived solutions to these paradoxes, revealing how some highly innovative organizations have been able to successfully manage these tensions. Supplementing these solutions, we offer suggestions on how organizations might approach those remaining paradoxes, concluding with a discussion on necessary future research endeavors. The evolution of research in the area of construction engineering and management has moved toward the use of quantitative metrics and research methods for identifying and evaluating the impact of events or procedures on the construction process. While quantitative research methods can be very important for answering certain research questions, there are important reasons for adopting qualitative or mixed methodology studies to gain a better understanding of complex phenomena. This paper explores the use of observational studies and their potential use within the field of construction research. Observational studies can provide answers to “what” phenomena occurred, particularly when people are involved in a process, along with gaining insights into “why” the phenomena occurred. This paper discusses two types of observational studies, structured and unstructured, and provides a procedure for their implementation within construction research. To clearly demonstrate the methodology, a case study focused on the investigation of two different versions of an educational simulation application, the virtual construction simulator (VCS), is used to illustrate the benefits and challenges of implementing mixed methodology observational studies. The case study involved the video recording and analysis of interactions between student team members when using the VCS application for a construction sequencing task. The video recordings were analyzed, and important insights were identified, both qualitative and quantitative. Through content analysis, it was determined that the improvements made in a new version of the VCS application were beneficial, and the detailed observational studies identified insights into why the revisions in the application yielded improved results. This case study details the steps and considerations involved in planning an observational study, as well as the benefits and challenges that researchers may encounter when using observational research methodologies. Is Islam particularly inimical to modernity, and the two are never to be reconciled? Many westerners and Muslims alike would argue that this is the case. Yet the more pertinent question; is religion in general and modernity incompatible and irreconcilable? There is a basic tension between all religions which rely on revelation as the primary source of knowledge and on God as the source of law and ethics, and modernity which privileges reason as the main source of knowledge and posits the source of law and ethics in human beings. An objective and unbiased reading of Islam shows that it is no more inimical to modernity than any other religion. Rather some of its aspects, including its emphasis on the importance of reason, its injunction that there is no compulsion in faith, and its frequent reference to people and their rights makes a reconciliation between Islam and modernity possible. Numerous techniques have been proposed to estimate carnivore abundance and density, but few have been validated against populations of known size. We used a density estimate established by intensive monitoring of a population of radiotagged leopards (Panthera pardus) with a detection probability of 1.0 to evaluate efficacy of track counts and camera-trap surveys as population estimators. We calculated densities from track counts using 2 methods and compared performance of 10 methods for calculating the effectively sampled area for camera-trapping data. Compared to our reference density (7.33±6 0.44 leopards/100 km²), camera-trapping generally produced more accurate but less precise estimates than did track counts. The most accurate result (6.97±6 1.88 leopards/100 km²) came from camera-trap data with a sampled area buffered by a boundary strip representing the mean maximum distance moved by leopards outside the survey area (MMDMOSA) established by telemetry. However, contrary to recent suggestions, the traditional method of using half the mean maximum distance moved from photographic recaptures did not result in gross overestimates of population density (6.56±6 1.92 leopards/100 km²) but rather displayed the next best performance after MMDMOSA. The only track-count method comparable to reference density employed a capture-recapture framework applied to data when individuals were identified from their tracks (6.45±6 1.43 leopards/100 km²) but the underlying assumptions of this technique limit more widespread application. Our results demonstrate that if applied correctly, camera-trap surveys represent the best balance of rigor and cost-effectiveness for estimating abundance and density of cryptic carnivore species that can be identified individually. In this paper, we introduce a new wideband digital downconverter (WDDC) for synthetic instruments (SIs). DDCs first tune to a signal's center frequency using a numerically controlled oscillator and mixer and then zoom-in to the bandwidth of interest using sample rate conversion (SRC). The SRC is required to produce continuously variable output sample rates from a fixed input sample rate over a large range. Current implementations accomplish this using a prefilter, an arbitrary factor resampler, and integer decimation filters. Resprouting is a common regenerative strategy in plant taxa that occurs in fire and drought-prone environments. When plants are forced to use bud resources in quick succession as a result of repeated disturbances, recovery vigour may be diminished. The loss of bud resources through the combined effect of successive fire and drought is likely to be more damaging for plant survival and persistence than one or other disturbance on its own. In this study, we examine the resprouting response of seven trees and two shrubs after fire and drought in woodland communities in the New England and Bioregion of New South Wales. We also investigate whether there is a cumulative impact on plant vitality as a result of the combined disturbances of fire followed by drought. Preliminary results suggest that resprouting after drought occurs from buds located on the same morphological parts of tree and shrub species as after fire, although the response reflects the intensity of impact. Mortality in nine species affected by drought was similar to that in plants affected by both fire and drought. Since a drought between successive fires has the potential to deplete bud resources and debilitate plants, drought should be taken into account when determining fire regimes, and a severe drought between two fires should be considered in a similar way to an unplanned burn. Failure to do so may lead to reduced vigour and excessive mortality in resprouting species after planned fire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The success of efforts to re-establish mammalian carnivores within their former range is dependent on three key factors: methodological considerations, the biological requirements of the target species, and the involvement of local human communities for whom large carnivores pose a threat. We consider the role of these factors in the first 13 years of an effort to re-establish wild lions in northern KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. We employed soft-release methods to mitigate the characteristic problems associated with restoration of large carnivores. A pre-release captivity period facilitated acclimatization of reintroduced lions and promoted long-term bonding of unfamiliar individuals into cohesive groups. All individuals remained in the release area and established enduring, stable home ranges. Reintroduced lions successfully reproduced and raised 78% of their cubs to independence. Human activity was the cause of all post-release mortality. Despite rapid population growth and the re-establishment of the species at Phinda Private Game Reserve, the population is small and isolated with little prospect for re-colonizing additional areas where the species has been extirpated, or for connecting with other isolated lion populations in the region. Accordingly, although we essentially overcame the short-term technical and biological challenges facing lion reintroduction, the long-term value of the Phinda population for addressing the conservation issues facing the species remains equivocal. Abstract: Adsorption of benzene/hydrocarbon liquid mixtures on silicalite-1 and NaX zeolites was measured by a volumetric/gravimetric method. The C6–C8 n-alkanes preferentially adsorb on silicalite-1 because of their higher heats of adsorption, and for n-C6, its favorable molecular configuration. The adsorption selectivity, which is 1400 for n-C6/benzene, decreases with increasing carbon number. In contrast, on NaX zeolite, benzene preferentially adsorbs over C6 and C7 n-alkanes (benzene/n-C6 selectivity as high as 1150), because benzene has a higher heat of adsorption and it packs more efficiently (higher entropy) in the NaX super cages. Benzene also preferentially adsorbs over cyclohexane on NaX because of its higher heat of adsorption and higher entropy. The benzene/cyclohexane adsorption selectivity increased from 82 to ∼3000 as the benzene concentration in the liquid increased from 1.95% to 25.8mol%. p-Xylene preferentially adsorbs over benzene on silicalite-1 over the entire concentration range, but the selectivity is only 1.3–8.8. In contrast, NaX selectively adsorbs benzene for benzene liquid concentrations less than 55mol%, and selectively adsorbs p-xylene at higher concentrations. The benzene/p-xylene adsorption behavior on NaX zeolite is not predicted by ideal adsorbed solution theory. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: The prevalence of patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) referred for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is increasing. The aim of the present study was to assess the outcomes of patients with severe LVD undergoing CABG. Methods: Outcomes of 115 consecutive patients with severe LVD (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF]≤ 30%, mean 22 ± 6%) undergoing isolated CABG between 1995 and 2000 were compared to 2335 patients with LVEF >30% (HEF). To further evaluate the LVD patients, they were divided into three subgroups base on LVEF: 0% to 10%, 11% to 20%, and 21% to 30%. Data were collected prospectively and entered into the departmental database of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Results: Patients in the LVD group had increased incidence of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), peripheral vascular disease, prior myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure, and less elective procedures compared to the HEF group. Despite this greater risk profile, operative mortality (LVD 2.6% vs. HEF 1.2%, p = 0.19), the incidence of stroke (2.6% vs. 1.0%, p = 0.13), and perioperative MI (0.9% vs. 0.7%) were not statistically different between the groups. The incidence of respiratory (14.8% vs. 1.9%, p < 0.001), renal (5.2% vs. 1.0%, p < 0.001), and vascular (5.2% vs. 0.5%, p < 0.001) complications was significantly higher in the LVD group, resulting in a longer hospital length of stay (8 ± 8 vs. 6 ± 4 days, p < 0.0001). In a multivariate analysis, advanced age was as an independent predictor of hospital mortality. Average follow-up in 108 (94%) LVD patients was 36 ± 22 months (range 2 to 78 months). Twenty-one patients expired during the follow-up, for nine the causes were cardiac-related. Three- and 5-year survival rates were 91 ± 3% and 76 ± 6%, respectively. Independent predictors of mid-term mortality in the LVD group by a multivariate analysis included female gender, renal failure, respiratory complications, and grade I/II mitral regurgitation (MR). At the time of follow-up, 72% of LVD patients were in functional class I/II. There were no statistically significant differences in short- and mid-term outcomes among the LVD subgroups. Conclusion: CABG in patients with severe LVD can be performed with a low mortality, albeit with higher morbidity and longer length of hospital stay, than patients with LVEF >30%. Low ejection fraction per se was not a predictor of hospital mortality. CABG should be considered a safe and effective therapy for low ejection fraction patients with ischemic heart disease. To investigate the distribution of Australian species ofSauropus. The information obtained is used to (1) identify areas of highest richness and centres of endemism, (2) investigate latitudinal gradients of richness and range size, (3) determine the types of rarity shown, and (4) provide hypotheses on historical biogeography of the genus within Australia.Australia.Specimens from 17 herbaria and field searches were examined and label and field information collated on distribution, habit and habitat. Distribution information was used to map all species within 784 grid cells of 1° × 1° and within the 97 Australian‘ecological regions’. Morphometric cluster analysis of species was conducted using Kulczynski association and flexible UPGMA on 23 character states. Simple regression was used to correlate species richness, density and range size to changes in latitude. CLIMEX is used to match the climate of the region of highest richness in Australia with other areas of the world.Species richness was highest within the tropical north of Australia, and most species were associated with tropical savanna woodlands. Two areas were identified as centres of endemism and these corresponded closely to areas of high species richness. Four morphological groups were identified. One species (Sauropus trachyspermus) was found to be widespread, however all other species had small geographical ranges. Species richness and range size were significantly correlated with changes in latitude. Ten species were found to be of the rarest type, warranting conservation initiatives.Two regions of high richness and endemism ofSauropusoccur, Thailand and Australia. Within Australia, the Kakadu-Alligator River and the Cairns-Townsville areas were identified as centres of endemism and high species richness forSauropus. AustralianSauropusin general occur in similar communities and climates as other members of the genus elsewhere. Ten of the 27 species of Australian endemicSauropusare extremely rare and warrant conservation initiatives. Correlations of latitude to species richness are potentially due toSauropusradiating from the climatically stable top end of Australia. Increasing range size in more southern latitudes may also be due to stability of climates in the top end or because there is more available land area at these latitudes.Sauropus micranthus, the only non-endemic species, is probably a more recent invader from the Tertiary period when tropical rain forests where more extensive and congruent with those of New Guinea. Rock outcrops are considered as habitat or ecological islands discordant from the adjacent matrix. The floras of 24 aggregated outcrop regions within the New England Batholith of eastern Australia were sampled and investigations made into species range differences. A measure is developed to describe differences in species range sizes across floras (range saturation: RS). Range sizes increased in areas with higher incident radiation (higher available energy) and concordantly in regions with a greater proportion of hemi-parasites, epiphytes and herbs (which were demonstrated to have large range sizes). Differences in species’ range sizes of granite outcrop occurring species on the New England Batholith of eastern Australia at different scales and extents are regressed against selected environmental variables and against local species richness and abundance. Although species’ range size has been linked in a number of systems with increased species richness and local species abundance, such correlations were not obtained in this investigation. Analyses of species’ range sizes could not be used to infer directly on processes that maintain species richness or abundance within the granitic outcrop flora of the New England Batholith. Abstract Aim To investigate if the current theories associated with recruitment strategies are sufficient to explain differences in the proportions of obligate seeders and resprouters on inselbergs and in the matrix. Location The New England Batholith of eastern Australia. Methods The importance of life form and regenerative response of flora species are compared for twenty-four archipelagos of inselbergs habitat islands and for their adjacent matrix. Forward stepwise multiple linear regression is used to correlate measured and modelled variables with differences in the proportional abundance of obligate seeders on inselbergs at three levels of sampling. Results A total of 216 inselbergs were surveyed and information on 826 vascular plant species was collated. Herbs were the most common life form both on and off inselbergs. There were generally more shrubs on inselbergs than in the matrix. Resprouters were more common everywhere. However, obligate seeders were proportionately more common on inselbergs. The degree of insularity of outcrop floras accounted for 23–37% of the variance in the proportional abundance of obligate seeders at three sampling scales. Main conclusions A model is proposed whereby the mechanisms that influence the abundances of obligate seeders and resprouters are different on inselbergs and in the matrix. Inselberg environments are harsh, arid, have limited safe recruitment sites and below ground resources, but are not light limited. In such habitats, obligate seeders with persistence life-history traits are favoured. Within the matrix in eastern Australia frequent biomass removal disturbances occur (such as fire) and resprouting is advantageous. High turnover obligate seeders with no persistence life-history traits can be favoured in the matrix with a reduced disturbance regime and where competition for light still occurs. We investigate the relationship between weed invasion within naturally frequently disturbed areas on Broughton Island in New South Wales, Australia. One-hundred and five 5 × 5 m plots were placed across dunal areas of the island which are favoured locations for ground nesting birds. All vascular flora was recorded and scored for percent cover along with the number of burrows, percent of area covered by burrows, level of activity, if activity was recent and the percent of bare ground. Floristic analysis highlighted two divergent vegetation assemblages one dominated predominantly by mat-forming introduced taxa and one by natives. Areas of high weed dominance were associated with apparent low current Wedge-tailed Shearwater (WTS) activity and abandoned burrows. Conclusion: Our results indicate that low growing mat-forming introduced weeds may be promoted by frequent disturbance but also pose a threat to breeding by reducing the area that can be used by WTS. Spatially resolved maps of the near-band-edge band-to-acceptor photoluminescence intensity near isolated dislocations in semi-insulating Czochralski-grown In-alloyed GaAs are presented and discussed. Bright rings ∼150 μm in radius surround 100 μm dark spots centered on dislocations. Far from dislocations the luminescence intensity is two to three orders of magnitude lower than in the rings surrounding dislocations. Spectra from bright and dark regions do not indicate a major difference in In content. The magnitude of the luminescence contrast suggests that it is the lifetime of free carriers rather than the concentration of acceptors involved in the luminescence that directly determines the amount of contrast. Little is known regarding insect defense pathways in Setaria viridis (setaria), a model system for panicoid grasses, including Zea mays (maize). Here we use metabolic, phylogenetic, and gene expression analyses to measure a subset of jasmonic acid (JA)-related defense responses to leaf-chewing caterpillars. Phylogenetic comparisons of known defense-related maize genes were used to identify putative orthologs in setaria, and candidates were tested by quantitative PCR to determine transcriptional responses to insect challenge. Our findings show that while much of the core JA-related metabolic and genetic responses appear conserved between setaria and maize, production of downstream secondary metabolites such as benzoxazinoids and herbivore-induced plant volatiles are dissimilar. This diversity of chemical defenses and gene families involved in secondary metabolism among grasses presents new opportunities for cross species engineering. The high degree of genetic similarity and ease of orthologous gene identification between setaria and maize make setaria an excellent species for translational genetic studies, but the species specificity of downstream insect defense chemistry makes some pathways unamenable to cross-species comparisons. Variation in home range size exists among and within wildlife populations. Home range size variation may be driven by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including sex, food and reproductive resources, density and competition. In this study, we investigated the sex‐specific impacts of prey and reproductive resources, conspecific density and competition on leopard Panthera pardus home range size at two spatio‐temporal scales in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa. Male leopard home ranges were more than twice the size of those of females, in line with expectations for a solitary, polygamous species. Both male and female leopard space‐use were primarily driven by short‐term changes in intra‐sexual conspecific density. Females were influenced by both short and long‐term drivers, with long‐term prey availability (home range and core) and refugia (core) further impacting size. Males were almost exclusively influenced by short‐term drivers; home range size was further impacted by short‐term changes in female leopard and prey density, and age. Long‐term prey availability contributed to male leopard core size. The difference in impact of short‐ and long‐term drivers between the sexes likely relates to tenure expectations; males may be forced out of their territories at any time and should therefore optimize their space‐use based on present conditions. Female leopards, however, must secure a home range that maximizes their reproductive success in the short‐ and long‐term in order to raise cubs to independence. Our findings challenge expectations that space‐use is primarily resource‐driven and demonstrate the critical role of social factors in saturated populations of solitary species. Furthermore, we illustrate the importance of considering temporally variable factors across different timescales to fully understand their impact on mammalian spatial organization.
