Far from the traditional view of care need, the process leading to the need of care in elder persons is multi-causal. Beyond the biological dimension, psycho-social factors play a significant role. Health Psychology and Clinical Psychology provide ways of intervention along with prevention and treatment tools. Persons providing care to the elderly play a key role within the social process of care work. They are not only social agents, trying to meet increasing social needs of elder persons, helping them to gain autonomy but they also have to avoid the negative implications of their practice. The studies focused on age-related differences in emotional experience are still scarce, and most of them have been conducted with North-American samples. This study explores the presence of age-related differences in some facets of emotional experience (subjective well-being and emotional intensity), as well as in variables related to emotion regulation (subjective emotional control and three emotion-regulation mechanisms: situation selection, emotion suppression, rumination) in the Spanish population. One hundred and sixty people from three age groups (younger, middle-aged and older adults) participated in the study. Older participants reported lower levels of life-satisfaction and positive emotional intensity than younger ones, as well as higher levels of perceived emotional control, emotional maturity and leveling of positive affect, and more use of emotion suppression. The results partially support the emotional maturity hypothesis of emotional functioning in old age, but also suggest that older adults' emotional regulation may present important peculiarities which have not yet been addressed in the extant literature, such as the moderation or limitation of emotional experience, especially positive emotions. In this descriptive study through questionnaires was analysed the relationship between elder abuse risk and possible elder abuse predictor factors belonging to caregiver (stress, burden, and anger), to care-receiver (problematic behaviours and functional state) to caregiving situation (received help and quality of the relationship). Moreover, it was assessed whether each group of variables had a significant role in the elder abuse risk explanation with a sample of 45 family caregivers of older persons with dementia. The results pointed out that elder abuse risk increased as much as worse was quality of the relationship, received less help and showed greater anger expression, burden and stress and had more problematic behaviours. Furthermore, each group of introduced variables (caregiver, older person and caregiving situation) significantly improved the explanatory power of elder abuse risk explaining a 63% of variance. The caregiver dimension was the one had more explanatory weight. These results let point out that risk elder abuse is the combination of nature different factors, despite the caregiver dimension was the one had greater weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
