Electromagnetic shielding is a critical function in various technologies, which is ideally achieved using a metal that reflects all incident radiation below its plasma frequency. Using high-resolution finite difference frequency domain simulations at microwave/RF frequencies, we show that the same efficacy can be achieved using a disordered collection of metal nanoparticles embedded in a flexible material. The mechanism underlying the reflection in the composite material is wave localization, disallowing the propagation of radiation up to the plasma frequency of the metal that constitutes the particles. We realize such a biopolymer composite using DNA–CTMA (deoxyribonucleic acid–cetyltrimethylammonium complex) as a support structure for Ag nanoparticles. Specialisation enhances the efficiency of plant–pollinator networks through the exchange of conspecific pollen transfer for floral resources. Floral resources form the currency of plant–pollinator interactions, but the understanding of how floral resources affect the structure of plant–pollinator networks remains modest. Previous theory predicts that optimally foraging animal species will specialise to improve resource acquisition under high resource availability. Although floral resource availability depends on both the plant production and animal consumption of the resources, previous work has assumed that production and availability are equivalent. This potentially may have led to erroneous inferences on the effect of resource availability on specialisation. We develop a mutualistic Lotka–Volterra consumer‐resource model to investigate the influence of floral resource availability on plant–pollinator network structure. The model incorporates animal adaptive foraging behaviour, floral resource dynamics, and density‐dependent dynamics. Specialisation, nestedness and modularity of simulated networks generated from the model under a wide range of parameters were explained using the generalised linear model. We found that the distinction between floral resource dynamics and plant density dynamics was necessary for partial specialisation of plant–pollinator networks. This is because floral resource dynamics constrained animal preference due to its depletion by animal species. Floral resource abundance had a positive effect on network specialisation, but animal density had a negative effect on network specialisation. A two-parameter model and a Bayesian statistical framework are proposed for estimating prevalence and determining sample size requirements for detecting disease in free-ranging wildlife. Current approaches tend to rely on random (ideal) sampling conditions or on highly specialized computer simulations. The model-based approach presented here can accommodate a range of different sampling schemes and allows for complications that arise in the free-ranging wildlife setting including the natural clustering of individuals on the landscape and correlation in disease status from transmission among individuals. Correlation between individuals and the sampling scheme have important consequences for the sample size requirements. Specifically, high within cluster correlations in disease status can reduce sample size requirements by reducing the effective population size. However, disproportionate sampling of small subsets of subjects from the greater target population, combined with high correlation of disease status, tends to inflate sample size requirements, because it increases the likelihood of sampling multiple animals within the same highly correlated clusters, resulting in little additional information gleaned from those samples. Our results are consistent with those generated using both previously established approaches and extend their ability to adapt to additional biological, epidemiological, or societal sampling complications specific to wildlife health. Research on climate anxiety is rapidly growing, with ongoing exploration of population prevalence, contributing factors, and mitigation strategies that transform anxiety into helpful action. What remains unclear is whether and how to delineate climate anxiety from mental ill health. A limited conceptualization of climate anxiety restricts efforts to identify and support those adversely affected. This paper draws on psychological and existential theories to propose a theoretical model of climate anxiety and coping, extending previous conceptualizations. The model theorizes that climate change evokes an existential conflict that manifests affectively as climate anxiety (and other emotional experiences), wherein cognitive and behavioral coping processes are activated. These processes fall on a continuum of adaptivity, depending on functional impact. Responses might range from meaningful engagement with activities that address climate change to maladaptive strategies that negatively impact personal, social, and occupational functioning. There is a tension at the heart of Aristotle's understanding of organic activities, created by his appeals to the productive activities of craftsmen and his use of normative language to characterize the goals of such activities. In this paper I discuss two ways of interpreting Aristotle's teleology aimed at resolving this tension, and discuss a closely analogous tension at the heart of a number of contemporary defenses of teleological reasoning in biology. A novel crystallographic form of a Zn(II) coordination complex [Zn(4-ohbz)2(4-nvp)2] (1-Form-III) (H4-ohbz = 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and 4-nvp = (E)-4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine), undergoes a solid-state photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reaction accompanied by a moderate photosalient effect, whereby single-crystals show cracking and splitting. This UV-induced cycloaddition accompanies a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation, allowing for continuous monitoring of the unit cell parameters. The new polymorph represents an intermediate form of the two previously reported crystallographic forms of [Zn(4-ohbz)2(4-nvp)2], and provides novel insight into moderating the magnitude of photosalient responses across polymorphic materials. The largely binary nature of biological sex and its conflation with the socially constructed concept of gender has created much strife in the last few years. The notion of gender identity and its differences and similarities with sex have fostered much scientific and legal confusion and disagreement. Settling the debate can have significant repercussions for science, medicine, legislation, and people's lives. The present review addresses this debate though different levels of analysis (i.e., genetic, anatomical, physiological, behavioral, and sociocultural), and their implications and interactions. We propose a rationale where both perspectives coexist, where diversity is the default, establishing a delimitation to the conflation between sex and gender, while acknowledging their interaction. Whereas sex in humans and other mammals is a biological reality that is largely binary and based on genes, chromosomes, anatomy, and physiology, gender is a sociocultural construct that is often, but not always, concordant with a person' sex, and can span a multitude of expressions. Le Dantec virus (LDV), assigned to the species Ledantevirus ledantec, genus Ledantevirus, family Rhabdoviridae has been associated with human disease but has gone undetected since the 1970s. We describe the detection of LDV in a human case of undifferentiated fever in Uganda by metagenomic sequencing and demonstrate a serological response using ELISA and pseudotype neutralisation. By screening 997 individuals sampled in 2016, we show frequent exposure to ledanteviruses with 76% of individuals seropositive in Western Uganda, but lower seroprevalence in other areas. Serological cross-reactivity as measured by pseudotype-based neutralisation was confined to ledanteviruses, indicating population seropositivity may represent either exposure to LDV or related ledanteviruses. We also describe the discovery of a closely related ledantevirus in blood from the synanthropic rodent Mastomys erythroleucus. Ledantevirus infection is common in Uganda but is geographically heterogenous. Further surveys of patients presenting with acute fever are required to determine the contribution of these emerging viruses to febrile illness in Uganda. Le Dantec virus (LDV) is a member of the viral genus Ledantevirus (Rhabodoviridae) and has previously been isolated only once previously in a child with febrile illness in Senegal in 1965. We detected the genome of LDV in blood sampled from a patient presenting with febrile illness in Western Uganda in 2012. To estimate the extent to which LDV may be causing human infection in the region, we tested stored blood samples collected in 2016 for evidence of antibodies to LDV, revealing that up to 76% of Ugandans in some areas had previously been exposed to either to LDV or a closely related virus. Seroprevalence was highest in Western Uganda, an area of high biodiversity where several other ledanteviruses have been isolated in association with ectoparasites of bats. To investigate potential ecological reservoirs of zoonotic viruses we tested blood from wild rodents inhabiting areas close to human settlements. We detected a new ledantevirus, closely related to LDV, in blood from a wild rodent Mastomys erythroleucus. Our work shows that ledanteviruses are a common cause of human infection in Uganda. The radius valley, i.e. a dearth of planets with radii between 1.5 and 2 Earth radii, provides insights into planetary formation and evolution. Using homogenously revised planetary parameters from Kepler 1-min short cadence light curves, we remodel transits of 72 small planets mostly orbiting low-mass stars, improving the precision and accuracy of planet parameters. By combining this sample with a similar sample of planets around higher mass stars, we determine the depth of the radius valley as a function of stellar mass. We find that the radius valley is shallower for low-mass stars compared to their higher mass counterparts. Upon comparison, we find that theoretical models of photoevaporation underpredict the number of planets observed inside the radius valley for low-mass stars: with decreasing stellar mass, the predicted fraction of planets inside the valley remains approximately constant whereas the observed fraction increases. We argue that this provides evidence for the presence of icy planets around low-mass stars. Alternatively, planets orbiting low-mass stars undergo more frequent collisions and scatter in the stars' high-energy output may also cause planets to fill the valley. The regional and rural intensivist workforce is vital to delivering high standards of healthcare to all Australians. Currently, there is an impending workforce disaster, with higher senior medical officer vacancy rates among regional and rural intensive care units, with these units being staffed by junior doctors who are in earlier stages of their training, which in turn increases supervisory burden. There is a lack of comprehensive literature on the barriers and enablers of training, recruiting and retaining regional and rural intensivists. To address this gap, a qualitative study was conducted, involving 13 in-depth, structured interviews with full-time and part-time intensivists from eight Australian regional and rural hospitals. Content analysis of the interview data resulted in the identification of four major categories: unique practice context, need for a broad generalist skill set, perks and challenges of working in a regional/rural area and workforce implications. The study findings revealed that regional and rural intensive care practice offers positive aspects, including work satisfaction, supportive local teams and an appealing lifestyle. However, these benefits are counterbalanced by challenges such as a heavier burden of on-call work, a higher proportion of junior staff which increase supervisory burden and limited access to subspecialist services. The implications of these findings are noteworthy and can be utilised to inform government policies, hospitals, the College of Intensive Care Medicine and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in developing strategies to enhance the provision of intensive care services and improve workforce planning in regional and rural areas. There has been increasing attention to legal and political contention concerning refugees and asylum seekers in cities. However, there are further opportunities to analyze the relationship between civil society litigation and state institutions in Global South cities. In this paper, I analyze civil society litigation to re-open Refugee Reception Offices (RROs) in South Africa. Primarily based on legal research, I argue that civil society litigation to re-open RROs in specific cities represents an advocacy strategy to contextualize national rights and policies within urban spaces. In the wake of several traumatic experiences, a French woman in her early 50s began to have visions and intuitive impressions about seven past lives she felt she had lived. She was able to verify memories of the most recent life and identify the deceased, an American Marine fatally wounded in Vietnam. It then became clear that she had been subliminally influenced by this life in various ways from childhood, most strongly following an NDE at 18. On the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she began to have detailed visions of a Don Cossack who had served in the Imperial Guard of Catherine the Great and Alexander I, dying during Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in 1812. Although the Cossack story is plausible, it has not been possible to investigate it or to identify the individual involved; nonetheless, here too there are apparent behavioral influences on the subject's present life. Although the subject recalled the other five lives in fragments only, some of these also seem to have impacted her unconsciously. This study explores the nature of past-life remembering and demonstrates how presumptive past lives may exercise an influence behaviorally, emotionally, and somatically, even in the absence of conscious recall. Purpose: Aerobic exercise produces beneficial outcomes in patients with low back pain and partially attenuates the fibrotic changes to the multifidus in a model of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. More targeted exercise might be required to fully attenuate these fibrotic alterations. This study aimed to investigate whether activation of the multifidus induced by neurostimulation could reduce fibrosis of the multifidus in a model of IVD degeneration in sheep. Methods: IVD degeneration was induced in 18 merino sheep via a partial thickness unilateral annulus fibrosus lesion to the L1/2 and L3/4 IVDs. All sheep received an implantable neurostimulation device that provides stimulation of the L2 medial branch of the dorsal ramus. Three months after surgery, the animals were assigned to Injury or Activated groups. Activated animals received neurostimulation and the Injury group received no stimulation. Six months after surgery, the multifidus was harvested at L2 and L4. Van Gieson's, Sirius Red and immunofluorescence staining for Collagen-I and -III and quantitative PCR was used to examine fibrosis. Muscle harvested from a previous study without IVD injury was used as a control. Results: Neurostimulation of the multifidus attenuated IVD degeneration dependent increases in the connective tissue, including Collagen-I but not Collagen-III, compared to the Injury group at L4. No measures of the multifidus muscle at L2, which received no stimulation, differed between the Injury and Activated groups. Conclusions: These data reveal that targeted activation of the multifidus muscle attenuates IVD degeneration dependent fibrotic alterations to the multifidus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To quantify brain microstructural changes in recently diagnosed relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) using longitudinal T1 measures, and determine their associations with clinical disability. Methods: Seventy-nine people with recently diagnosed (< 6 months) RRMS were recruited from a single-centre cohort sub-study, and underwent baseline and 1-year brain MRI, including variable flip angle T1 mapping. Median T1 was measured in white matter lesions (WML), normal-appearing white matter (NAWM), cortical/deep grey matter (GM), thalami, basal ganglia and medial temporal regions. Prolonged T1 (≥ 2.00 s) and supramedian T1 (relative to cohort WML values) WML voxel counts were also measured. Longitudinal change was assessed with paired t-tests and compared with Bland-Altman limits of agreement from healthy control test-retest data. Regression analyses determined relationships with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score and dichotomised EDSS outcomes (worsening or stable/improving). Results: Sixty-two people with RRMS (mean age 37.2 ± 10.9 [standard deviation], 48 female) and 11 healthy controls (age 44 ± 11, 7 female) contributed data. Prolonged and supramedian T1 WML components increased longitudinally (176 and 463 voxels, respectively; p <.001), and were associated with EDSS score at baseline (p <.05) and follow-up (supramedian: p <.01; prolonged: p <.05). No cohort-wide median T1 changes were found; however, increasing T1 in WML, NAWM, cortical/deep GM, basal ganglia and thalami was positively associated with EDSS worsening (p <.05). Conclusion: T1 is sensitive to brain microstructure changes in early RRMS. Prolonged WML T1 components and subtle changes in NAWM and GM structures are associated with disability. Clinical relevance statement: MRI T1 brain mapping quantifies disability-associated white matter lesion heterogeneity and subtle microstructural damage in normal-appearing brain parenchyma in recently diagnosed RRMS, and shows promise for early objective disease characterisation and stratification. This study examined the drought preparedness of drought-prone communities in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of Cameroon. The study employed a mixed-method approach, using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, including interviews, household surveys, focus group discussions, and field observations. The data were then analysed using SPSS for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. The results reveal that the respondents primarily rely on their personal and community abilities to prepare for droughts. A significant proportion (χ2 = 11.676, P = 0.020) of the respondents depend on community leaders for drought information, while others rely on family and friends. They also use indigenous knowledge and construct boreholes/wells to prepare for droughts. However, limited government support, inadequate extension/scientific support services, and insufficient formal training limited drought preparedness. Age, household size, and income significantly influenced perceived preparedness for drought. Based on the findings, the study concludes that informal/locally-driven strategies are important in drought preparedness and should be strengthened. The study recommends the establishment of drought management committees at the grassroots level and the effective use of indigenous knowledge in combination with scientific knowledge for drought planning and adaptation. Given the geographical variation in climatic stressors, a focus on a specific event such as drought has enhanced the understanding of drought disaster preparedness at the community level for effective planning and policy interventions. Research on political participation has long emphasized differences between Americans who donate money to political campaigns and Americans who perform other kinds of political activity. It’s unclear, however, if there are distinctions in how campaigns use advertisements to solicit donations and mobilize grassroots voters. Analyzing Facebook ad data from thousands of ads, donations, and e-mail sign-ups from a recent statewide gubernatorial campaign, we show that campaigns deploy ad themes that vary in their success at attracting donations and mobilizing grassroots activists. Ad effectiveness varies by region of the state as well. Ideological extremity boosts small donations and campaign sign-ups. AbstractStem rust of barley and wheat is caused by the obligate pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt) and stem rust of oat is caused by P. graminis f. sp. avenae (Pga). Stem rust can be a very destructive disease of cereal crops and, until the development of resistant host varieties, was responsible for millions of dollars of losses to producers. Genetic host resistance is the most common and effective method to control stem rust on cereals. Knowledge of the virulence genes and races present in the pathogen population is important to identify effective host resistance genes for use by cereal plant breeders. The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence and severity of P. graminis in wheat, barley and oat in Manitoba, Canada, and assess the virulence frequencies and races of isolates collected from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Canada during 2020 to 2022. Stem rust incidence and severity was very light in Manitoba in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Virulence was not observed on resistance genes Sr30, Sr24 and Sr31 from Canadian collections of Pgt isolates made during 2020 to 2022. Race QFCSC was the most common race of Pgt in Canada, and races MCCFC and TPMKC were also common in Manitoba in 2022. Virulence to resistance genes Pg6, Pg10 and Pg16 was not observed among Pga isolates. The most common race of Pga from Manitoba and Saskatchewan was TGN, followed by SGB and TJS. High-temperature microfluidic devices (such as gas chromatography microcolumns) have traditionally been fabricated using photolithography, etching, and wafer bonding which allow for precise microscale features but lack the ability to form complex 3D designs. Metal additive manufacturing could enable higher complexity microfluidic designs if reliable methods for fabrication are developed, but forming small negative features is challenging--especially in powder-based processes. In this paper, the formation of sealed metal microchannels was demonstrated using stainless-steel binder jetting with bronze infiltration. To create small negative features, bronze infiltrant must fill the porous part produced by binder jetting without filling the negative features. This was achieved through sacrificial powder infiltration (SPI), wherein sacrificial powder reservoirs (pore size ~60 µm) are used to control infiltrant pressure. With this pressure control, the infiltrant selectively filled the small pores between particles in the printed part (pore size ~3 µm) while leaving printed microchannels (700 µm and 930 µm) empty. To develop the SPI method, a pore filling study was performed in this stainless-steel/bronze system with 370 µm, 650 µm, and 930 µm microchannel segments. This study enabled SPI process design on these length scales by determining variations in pore filling across a sample and preferential filling between different sized pores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The atmospheres of small, close-in exoplanets are vulnerable to rapid mass loss during protoplanetary disc dispersal via a process referred to as 'boil-off', in which confining pressure from the local gas disc reduces, inducing atmospheric loss and contraction. We construct self-consistent models of planet evolution during gaseous core accretion and boil-off. As the surrounding disc gas dissipates, we find that planets lose mass via subsonic breeze outflows which allow causal contact to exist between disc and planet. Planets initially accrete of order |$\sim 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| in atmospheric mass, however, boil-off can remove |$\gtrsim 90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of this mass during disc dispersal. We show that a planet's final atmospheric mass fraction is strongly dictated by the ratio of cooling time-scale to disc dispersal time-scale, as well as the planet's core mass and equilibrium temperature. With contributions from core cooling and radioactivity, we show that core luminosity eventually leads to the transition from boil-off to core-powered mass loss. We find that smaller mass planets closest to their host star may have their atmospheres completely stripped through a combination of boil-off and core-powered mass loss during disc dispersal, implying the existence of a population-level radius gap emerging as the disc disperses. We additionally consider the transition from boil-off/core-powered mass loss to X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photoevaporation by considering the penetration of stellar XUV photons below the planet's sonic surface. Finally, we show that planets may open gaps in their protoplanetary discs during the late stages of boil-off, which may enhance mass-loss rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biochemistry underlying seed coat darkening of lentil due to extended storage is limited. This study investigated the relationship between seed coat darkening over time during storage and changes in concentration of phenolic compounds (total phenolic compounds, total condensed tannins, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins) in two red lentil cultivars (PBA Hallmark and PBA Jumbo2), stored at two grain moisture contents (10 and 14%, w/w) and two temperatures (4 and 35 °C) for 360 days. Seed coat darkening was only significant (p = 0.05) at high temperatures (35 °C) but not at low temperatures (4 °C), irrespective of grain moisture content and cultivar. The concentration of all phenolic compounds tested in this study reduced significantly (p = 0.05) throughout the study period, regardless of temperature and grain moisture treatments. The changes in seed coat brightness and redness followed a linear pattern, except for yellowness, where phenolic compounds initially reduced linearly and then remained constant thereafter. Darkening of seedcoat was only associated with the reduction in phenolic compounds tested in this study at 35 °C, and not at 4 °C. This suggests that seed coat darkening due to extended storage may not be directly linked to broad reductions in the groups of phenolic compounds or individual compounds assessed in this study. This information prompts further research to identify the actual biochemical processes that cause the darkening of seed coats during storage and assist in developing cultivars with stable seed coat colour by selecting and modifying such processes. Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is a treatment for patients with poorly controlled, severe asthma. However, predictors of treatment response to BT are defined poorly. Do baseline radiographic and clinical characteristics exist that predict response to BT? We conducted a longitudinal prospective cohort study of participants with severe asthma receiving BT across eight academic medical centers. Participants received three separate BT treatments and were monitored at 3-month intervals for 1 year after BT. Similar to prior studies, a positive response to BT was defined as either improvement in Asthma Control Test results of ≥ 3 or Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire of ≥ 0.5. Regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between pretreatment clinical and quantitative CT scan measures with subsequent BT response. From 2006 through 2017, 88 participants received BT, with 70 participants (79.5%) identified as responders by Asthma Control Test or Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire criteria. Responders were less likely to undergo an asthma-related ICU admission in the prior year (3% vs 25%; P =.01). On baseline quantitative CT imaging, BT responders showed less air trapping percentage (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.82-0.99; P =.03), a greater Jacobian determinant (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.05-2.11), greater SD of the Jacobian determinant (OR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.04-3.26), and greater anisotropic deformation index (OR, 3.06; 95% CI, 1.06-8.86). To our knowledge, this is the largest study to evaluate baseline quantitative CT imaging and clinical characteristics associated with BT response. Objective: As images are used within graphical user interfaces to signify menu selection, it is important to understand how image properties can influence cursor placement online. Background: Objects have multiple dimensions that create potential ambiguity and Stroop-like confusions for the operator if a previously habitual response conflicts with the required response. Methods: To examine the impact of compatibility and other contextual factors, 41 participants used a computer Mouse or touch screen to place the cursor upon images of full or empty cups that varied in size, and direction of handle. Results: Cursor placements took longer using the Mouse than touch screen. Although participants were placing the cursor on images, the size of the cup, whether it was empty or full, and the handle orientation interacted in their effects upon response duration and cursor placement. The effects of cup size reversed for empty cups or those with incompatible handles. Conclusion: Context can influence cursor placement. Perceived spillability influenced precision requirements, and the cup handle can serve as target or a flanking distractor. Application: Image content can influence screen hotspots. Rationale: Cabergoline (CAB) is an ergot derivative typically prescribed for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia. It suppresses the release of prolactin through agonist actions on dopamine (DA) D2 receptors; however, it possesses binding affinity for other DA and 5-HT receptors. Side effects that exacerbate valvular heart disease can occur with high doses. Objective: The present study examined the acute, subchronic, and chronic dose–response effects of CAB and a derivative dimethylcabergoline (DMC) which acts as an antagonist instead of agonist at 5-HT 2B receptors, on appetitive and consummatory sexual behaviors of male rats. Methods: CAB (0, 0.03, 0.15, or 0.3 mg/kg/ml) was administered daily to sexually experienced male rats (N = 10/dose) by oral gavage for a total of 68 days. Sexual behavior was tested every 4 days during this period for a total of 16 trials. On the 17th trial, rats were administered their dose of CAB, and 4 h after were overdosed with sodium pentobarbital, perfused intracardially, and their brains processed for Fos immunohistochemistry. DMC (0, 0.03, 0.15, 0.3 mg/kg/ml) was administered daily to sexually experienced male rats (N = 10/dose) by oral gavage for a total of 36 days. Sexual behavior was tested every 4 days for a total of 9 trials. Results: CAB increased anticipatory level changes, intromissions, and ejaculations significantly across all timepoints, with the medium and high doses being most potent. The medium and high doses also increased Fos protein significantly within the medial preoptic area, whereas in the nucleus accumbens shell, the low and medium doses decreased Fos protein but the high dose increased it significantly from control. Similar to CAB, the medium and high doses of DMC increased the number of ejaculations significantly. Rats in all drug dose groups appeared healthy for the duration of the experiments. Conclusions: Both CAB and DMC facilitate ejaculations, and CAB further facilitates measures of anticipatory sexual motivation and intromissions. Background: Emerging adults (EAs) who are not 4-year college students nor graduates are at elevated risk for lifetime alcohol use disorder, comorbid drug use, and mental health symptoms, compared to college graduates. There is a need for tailored brief alcohol intervention (BAI) approaches to reduce alcohol risk and to facilitate healthy development in this high-risk population. Most BAIs include a single session focused on discussing risks associated with drinking and correcting normative beliefs about drinking rates. EAs may benefit from additional elements that enhance general wellness. The substance-free activity session (SFAS) aims to clarify life goals and values and increase goal-directed activities that provide alternatives to alcohol use, and the relaxation training (RT) session teaches relaxation and stress reduction skills. Methods: The present study is a randomized 3-group (BAI + SFAS vs. RT + SFAS vs. education control) trial with 525 EAs (175 per group; estimated 50% women and 50% African American) who report recent risky drinking and who are not students or graduates of 4-year colleges. Participants will have the option of completing the intervention sessions in person or via a secure video teleconference. Levels of drinking and alcohol-related problems will be evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-intervention. The primary hypothesis is that both BAI + SFAS and RT + SFAS participants will report significantly greater reductions in alcohol use and problems relative to education control participants, with no differences in outcomes between the two active treatment conditions. In an earlier study, Rupert Sheldrake, Pam Smart, and Michael Nahm reviewed accounts of end-of-life experiences (ELEs) involving non-human animals. They showed animal ELEs to be similar to human ELEs, suggesting common underlying processes. Here, we consider apparent after-death communications (ADCs) from non-human animals and compare them to accounts of ADCs from humans. We collected 442 accounts of animal ADCs from our own appeals and from reports in the literature. We found a close resemblance between ADCs from animals and from humans in the types of experience--dream visitations, a sense of presence, visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory apparitions, and psychokinetic effects. As with human ADCs, the great majority of animal ADCs were reported to have occurred in the first hours or days after death, with a dramatic falling off over time. Moreover, our data show that people grieve their pets in much the same fashion as they grieve their human loved ones, suggesting that human bereavement studies would do well to take into account the animal data to which we draw attention. Doing so may help clarify issues regarding the fundamental nature of the experiences--determining whether they are best regarded as internal hallucinations, as living-agent-psi-mediated subjective or objective phenomena, or as actual contacts with the deceased--which in turn carries implications not only for academic studies of bereavement but for clinical practice with the bereaved. Polanyi, Mauss, and others describe reasons for the growing differentiation of economy from other spheres of life. This article proposes a further reason: the increasing invisibility of economic transactions in everyday life. It traces the declining visibility of economic transactions in England and North America from around 1700 to the present, as public marketplaces were displaced by growing longer‐distance trade and the growing role of intermediaries. It suggests that this declining visibility of the economic networks in which people were enmeshed encouraged the development of economic thought, ultimately including the idea of the economy as a distinct realm, which was intended to explain activities and processes that were no longer visible. Although women and men rate their subjective arousal similarly in response to "female-centric" erotic videos, women rate their subjective arousal lower than men in response to "male-centric" videos, which often end with the male's ejaculation. This study asked whether ratings of subjective sexual arousal and desire using the Sexual Arousal and Desire Inventory (SADI) would be altered if this ending was present or absent, and whether including or excluding the accompanying soundtrack would influence the magnitude and direction of the responses. A total of 119 cis-gendered heterosexual undergraduates (59 women and 60 men) viewed an 11-min sexually explicit heterosexual video that ended with a 15-s ejaculation scene. Two versions of the video were created, one with the ejaculatory ending (E+) and one without (E−). Participants were assigned randomly to view one of the two versions with (S+) or without (S−) the accompanying soundtrack, after which they completed the state version of the SADI. Women and men found both sequences without sound less arousing on the Evaluative, Motivational, and Physiological subscales of the SADI relative to the S+ sequences. However, on the Negative/Aversive subscale, women found the E + S- sequence more negative than did men, whereas this difference was not found with sound. Thus, women and men were sensitive to the auditory content of sexually explicit videos, and scenes of sexual intercourse ending with explicit ejaculation increased the Evaluative and Motivational properties of subjective sexual arousal and desire. This study presents an explanatory biophysical model developed and validated to simulate seed coat colour traits including CIE L*, a*, and b* changes over time for stored lentil cultivars PBA Hallmark, PBA Hurricane, PBA Bolt, and PBA Jumbo2 under diverse storage conditions. The model showed robust performance for all cultivars, with R2 values ≥ 0.89 and RMSE values ≤ 0.0019 for all seed coat colour traits. Laboratory validation at 35 °C demonstrated a high agreement (Lin's Concordance Correlation Coefficient, CCC ≥ 0.82) between simulated and observed values of all colour traits for PBA Jumbo2 and strong agreement (CCC ≥ 0.81) for PBA Hallmark in brightness (CIE L*) and redness (CIE a*), but not in yellowness (CIE b*). At 15 °C, both cultivars exhibited moderate to weak agreement between simulated and observed values of all colour traits (CCC ≤ 0.47), as very little change was recorded in the observed values over the 360 days of storage. Bulk storage system validation for PBA Hallmark showed moderate performance (CCC ≥ 0.46) between simulated and observed values of all colour traits. Modelling to simulate changes in seed coat colour traits of lentils over time will equip growers and traders to make informed managerial decisions when storing lentils for long periods. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD) is the most common enzymopathy globally. Early studies suggested an association with severe psychotic illness; however, changes to laboratory testing and diagnostic classification renders the association unclear. This study aims to explore the interaction between G6PD deficiency and psychotic symptoms, in particular to identify specific patterns of presentation or impact on outcomes. Pubmed, Embase, and PsycInfo databases were searched from inception to May 2023. Descriptive statistics and narrative review of were used to synthesise data on demographics, mental and physical health diagnoses, investigations, treatment, and outcomes. No clear link was found in published data (eight case reports, case series of n = 29) with a high rate (63%) of haemolytic crisis at the time of psychiatric presentation suggested delirium as an alternative diagnosis. Four case control studies found no significant difference in the prevalence of G6PD deficiency. However, catatonic presentation was reported in 40% of the case series and a higher prevalence of G6PD deficiency in catatonic schizophrenia was noted in case control studies. Based on the information available there was no clear association between G6PD deficiency and psychotic illness or treatment resistance, although paucity of studies and risk of bias limit strong conclusions. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), also known as acne inversa, is a chronic disabling and debilitating inflammatory disease with a high unmet medical need. The prevalence of HS reported in most studies is 1–2%, although it is likely to be under-reported and estimates vary globally owing to variance in data collection methods, ethnicity, geographical location and under-diagnosis. HS is characterized by persistent, painful cutaneous nodules, abscesses and draining tunnels commonly affecting the axillary, anogenital, inguinal and perianal/gluteal areas. Over time, chronic uncontrolled inflammation results in irreversible tissue destruction and scarring. Although the pathophysiology of HS has not been fully elucidated, the tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-17 pathways have an important role, involving multiple cytokines. Currently, treatment options include topical medications; systemic therapies, including repeated and/or rotational courses of systemic antibiotics, retinoids and hormonal therapies; and various surgical procedures. The anti-TNF-α antibody adalimumab is currently the only biologic approved by both the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for HS; however, its efficacy varies, with a clinical response reported in approximately 50% of patients in phase III trials. HS is a rapidly evolving field of discovery, with a diverse range of agents with distinct mechanisms of action currently being explored in clinical trials. Several other promising therapeutic targets have recently emerged, and agents targeting the IL-17 and Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathways are the most advanced in ongoing or completed phase III clinical trials. Alongside limited therapeutic options, significant challenges remain in terms of diagnosis and disease management, with a need for better treatment outcomes. Whether more species are required to maintain ecosystem functioning as spatial scale increases or across environmental gradients has frequently been studied by examining whether different species drive ecosystem functioning in different sites. However, this approach does rule out the counterfactual scenario where a few species could potentially maintain ecosystem functioning across sites as this requires examining which species can (or cannot) compensate for the loss of others.Here, I used an observational study and a field‐based transplant experiment to examine the effects of species loss on biomass productivity in an intertidal marine macroalgal system. I calculated the number of species required to maintain biomass productivity across four depth zones reflecting a water emersion gradient using two commonly used observational approaches. Then, I combined hypothetical simulated extinction scenarios with field‐based transplant data of relative growth rates of all species across the four depth zones to explore how the number of species required to maintain biomass productivity across depth zones changed under counterfactual scenarios where species compensated for species loss.The observational analyses suggested that between three and four species were required to maintain productivity across the depth zones. The simulated extinction scenarios did not. Rather, decreases in biomass productivity due to the loss of some species (e.g. Fucus spiralis, Ascophyllum nodosum) were easily compensated by other species (e.g. Fucus vesiculosus). Red Queen (RQ) theory states that adaptation does not protect species from extinction because their competitors are continually adapting alongside them. RQ was founded on the apparent independence of extinction risk and fossil taxon age, but analytical developments have since demonstrated that age-dependent extinction is widespread, usually most intense among young species. Here, we develop ecological neutral theory as a general framework for modeling fossil species survivorship under incomplete sampling. We show that it provides an excellent fit to a high-resolution dataset of species durations for Paleozoic zooplankton and more broadly can account for age-dependent extinction seen throughout the fossil record. Unlike widely used alternative models, the neutral model has parameters with biological meaning, thereby generating testable hypotheses on changes in ancient ecosystems. The success of this approach suggests reinterpretations of mass extinctions and of scaling in eco-evolutionary systems. Intense extinction among young species does not necessarily refute RQ or require a special explanation but can instead be parsimoniously explained by neutral dynamics operating across species regardless of age. The known connection between shrinkage estimation, empirical Bayes, and mixed effects models is explored and applied to balanced and unbalanced designs in which the responses are correlated. As an illustration, a mixed model is proposed for predicting the outcome of English Premier League games that takes into account both home and away team effects. This research examines variation in response to mass email communications by a large and sophisticated political campaign over the course of the 2018 election cycle. Computational text analysis is utilized to generate and catalogue the most frequent themes across a body of 690 separate email messages. We find open rates vary somewhat by the subject key words of messages as well as when they were sent. In addition, small donations received through email are also responsive to the contents of messages, controlling for timing and other relevant factors. Given the very low cost associated with using email to communicate with supporters, it appears to be an effective means for harvesting small contributions and of providing opportunities for large numbers of voters to elevate their level of participation in the electoral process. While turbulent flow characteristics in the region upstream of wall-mounted obstacles (often called the junction region) are well described for many engineering systems, uncertainty remains about flow characteristics upstream of the large, immobile boulders that are commonly found in steep gravel-bed streams. This uncertainty is largely due to the unique bed features (e.g., relatively large bed roughness, a permeable bed) and hydraulic characteristics (e.g., variable submergence) present at boulders, which may affect flow characteristics. This study reports results of laboratory volumetric particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments performed upstream of model boulders for fully submerged (FS) and partially submerged (PS) conditions. Several atypical junction flow characteristics were documented. Mean-flow reversal and spiraling streamlines (commonly associated with horseshoe vortices) were not documented, though limitations in near-bed measurement extents contributed to this result in several cases. Nevertheless, modest increases in local rotation rate (assessed via vorticity magnitude and swirling strength) were observed near where the horseshoe vortex is typically expected. Mean-flow data also suggest that notable mass flux into the permeable bed occurred upstream of boulders. Several effects of submergence on junction flow characteristics were also identified. Compared with the FS condition, the PS condition exhibited more rapid deceleration of the mean streamwise velocity, stronger downward velocities near the bed that extended over a wider transverse area, stronger increases of the near-bed turbulent kinetic energy, and oppositely signed streamwise-vertical Reynolds stresses near the water surface. Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is a critical replacement therapy for immunodeficiencies and immunomodulatory treatment for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Adequate supply of IVIg is a global issue, necessitating supply restrictions. In Australia, despite strict criteria for use, demand for IVIg has increased over time and exceeds domestic supply. Objective: Factors associated with the upward trend in overall IVIg use were examined, including in the number of unique patients, IVIg dosing and treatment frequency and variations by prescribing discipline and disease group. Methods: De‐identified data of IVIg dispensed in the largest Australian state (New South Wales) from 2007 to 2013 were provided by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. Trends and projections were calculated using log‐linear regression of unique patients, treatment episodes and grams of IVIg for overall use and use stratified by discipline and disease group. Results: During the study period, 169 453 treatment episodes were recorded for 12 547 unique patients accounting for 5 827 787 g of IVIg use. Overall, IVIg use increased by 12.0% (11.5–12.6%) per year representing a 97.7% increase (91.6–104%) over the study period. The highest growth was among neurological conditions (16.0% (14.9–17.1%) per year). An increase in the number of unique patients was the primary driver of this growth, augmented by increases in the frequency and average dose per treatment. Conclusions: Clinically acceptable measures to improve management of IVIg supply are needed including optimising dose, frequency and duration of treatment. Objective The purpose of this study was to describe common perspectives important to achieving excellence and success in physical therapist residency education programs. Methods Individuals with direct responsibility for creating and revising physical therapist residency program goals participated in a mixed-methods study using Q-methodology. They sorted 31 goal topics based on the level of importance for achieving excellence and success in physical therapist residency education. By-participant factor analysis identified dominant perspectives, which were interpreted based on emergent themes from the topics identified as the most important. Participants' rationale for selecting goal topics as the most important were extracted from the post-survey. Results Seventy-three individuals responded, representing 9 of the 11 clinical residency areas of practice. Three main perspectives emerged: resident behaviors, resident achievements, and program attributes. One shared perspective emerged across all 3 factors that emphasized the residents' ability to become self-regulated, lifelong learners who integrate learning into practice: preparation for future learning. Conclusions Variability in weighting the importance of program goals associated with each perspective may include a program's organization and mission, individual beliefs and experiences related to program leadership, and resource availability. Although respondent emphasis placed importance of some items over others, the findings do not suggest that items ranked lower were unnecessary or unimportant in achieving program excellence. The relative importance of items was weighted differently based on the perspective of program leadership and the individual completing the sorting activity. Impact The results of this study suggest that physical therapist residency programs should have at least 1 or 2 goals in each of the 3 distinct perspectives, as well as the 1 shared perspective identified in our findings. Some consistency in program goals based on the perspectives identified here may enable further research exploring excellence, value, and outcomes in physical therapist residency education. Piezoresistance, the change of electrical resistance due to applied mechanical strain, has been characterized for films in tension or bending. However, measuring the compressive piezoresistance of films remains a challenge because the in-plane compression often results in macroscopic buckling and kinking, leading to localization of strain. Here, we overcame this issue via a newly developed method to calculate the compressive piezoresistance of films by measuring the change of resistance in situ under tensile and bending stresses. A linear fit was applied to the experimental tensile piezoresistive response and a quadratic fit was applied to the bending piezoresistive response. The experimental bending response was mathematically decomposed into its tensile and compressive components. The compressive response was then isolated by subtracting the tensile response from the bending response. In this study, the method is applied to reduced graphene oxide (rGO) film specimens. For rGO films, the compressive piezoresistance was found to be much greater than the tensile piezoresistance. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that extensive damage occurred on the compressive side of the bending specimen, resulting in a large increase in resistivity. We anticipate that our study will be adapted to applications that require mechanically reliable, flexible, and highly conductive materials, such as flexible electronics and structural energy and power. While Search Engine Optimisation seeks to enhance PageRankings, some methods are not approved or condoned by browser developers. To understand the risks faced by suicidal gamblers in the online environment, 2 studies examined the behaviour of an online search engine. A series of Google searches in 2021 used key terms such as ‘suicide’ and ‘gambling’ that might be employed by a suicidal gambler. During these searches browser ‘hits’ included opportunities to gamble. Webpages (N = 200) offered to a potentially suicidal gambler were primarily categorised as: other suicides (20%), treatment providers (8.5%), online casinos (7%); politics (22%), academic (23.5%). From a Google search providing 1,090 hits, the links to 113 online casinos were classified as a function of Domain Name hijacking, Metatag Stuffing, Error 404, and presence of Malware. There were significant relationships between the size of the businesses whose Domain Names were hijacked, and the presence of Malware. The deliberate use by webpage designers of the word ‘suicide’ to attract customers to online casinos appears inappropriate and ethically questionable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce a new command, summclust, that summarizes the cluster structure of the dataset for linear regression models with clustered disturbances. The key unit of observation for such a model is the cluster. We therefore propose cluster-level measures of leverage, partial leverage, and influence and show how to compute them quickly in most cases. The measures of leverage and partial leverage can be used as diagnostic tools to identify datasets and regression designs in which cluster–robust inference is likely to be challenging. The measures of influence can provide valuable information about how the results depend on the data in the various clusters. We also show how to calculate two jackknife variance matrix estimators efficiently as a by-product of our other computations. These estimators, which are already available in Stata, are generally more conservative than conventional variance matrix estimators. The way we measure entities can have significant downstream effects on the transformations we can employ and the analytical methods we can use without breaking the link between the measurement and the aspect of reality they represent. Despite its obvious importance in any quantitative science, measurement theory is currently underused in biological research, including paleobiology. Proper statistical analysis is invaluable for extracting knowledge from data, but statistical models are blind to measurement theoretical issues because they can be applied to any dataset that fulfills their assumptions regarding the distributional properties of the data. Enhanced awareness of how distinct types of measurements possess different properties can improve the quality of scientific inquiry and lead to more meaningful inferences about the empirical world, including the fossil record. Measurement theory, a branch of applied mathematics, offers guiding principles for extracting meaning from empirical observations and is applicable to any science involving measurements. Measurement theory is highly relevant in paleobiology because statistical approaches assuming ratio-scaled variables are commonly used on data belonging to nominal and ordinal scale types. We provide an informal introduction to representational measurement theory and argue for its importance in robust scientific inquiry. Although measurement theory is widely applicable in paleobiology research, we use the study of disparity to illustrate measurement theoretical challenges in the quantitative study of the fossil record. The continuous evolution of H5Nx highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) is a major concern for accurate diagnosis. We encountered some challenges in subtyping and sequencing a recently isolated H5N1 HPAIV strain using classical diagnostic methods. Oropharyngeal, conjunctival, and cloacal swabs collected from a dead white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla albicilla) were screened via real-time RT-PCR targeting the influenza A virus matrix (M) gene, followed by virus isolation. The hemagglutination inhibition test was applied in order to subtype and antigenically characterize the isolate using anti-A/duck/Hong Kong/820/80 (H5N3) reference serum or anti-H5N1 cross-clade monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Sequencing using previously reported universal primers was attempted in order to analyze the full-length hemagglutinin (HA) gene. Oropharyngeal and conjunctival samples were positive for the M gene, and high hemagglutination titers were detected in inoculated eggs. However, its hemagglutination activity was not inhibited by the reference serum or mAbs. The antiserum to a recently isolated H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b strain inhibited our isolate but not older strains. A homologous sequence in the previously reported forward primer and HA2 region in our isolate led to partial HA gene amplification. Finally, next-generation sequencing confirmed the isolate as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b HPAIV, with genetic similarity to H5N1 strains circulating in Japan since November 2021. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current state-of-the-practice technology for high-lift aerodynamic simulations is to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations on a fixed grid or a refinement sequence of fixed grids. The Fixed-Grid Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Technology Focus Group set out to determine meshing requirements and best practices, whether RANS can accurately predict the change in aerodynamic performance with changes in flap deflection, whether RANS modeling can produce accurate results near CLmax, and the effects of underconvergence and solution strategy on computed results. Eighteen groups of participants submitted over 100 datasets. Challenges with grid convergence and iterative convergence made it impossible to definitively answer all the questions we had posed. Despite this, we can conclude that meshes with at least half a billion cells (more than one billion degrees of freedom) are required for grid convergence away from stall; that RANS simulations cannot currently be reliably used to predict aerodynamic coefficients near stall, nor changes in coefficients with changes in flap angle; that iterative underconvergence remains a significant source of uncertainty in outputs; and that solution initialization can have an important effect on solution behavior, including flow separation patterns. Guidelines vary for the age at which to begin breast cancer screening and the interval between examinations. A validated computer model was used to compare estimated outcomes between various screening regimens. The OncoSim-Breast microsimulation model (Canadian Partnership Against Cancer) was used to simulate a cohort of 1.53 million Canadian women born in 1975. The effect of screening regimen on absolute breast cancer mortality rates, stage at diagnosis, number needed to be screened to avert a breast cancer death or save a life year, abnormal recall rates and negative biopsy rates was examined for unscreened women or those entering screening at age 40 or 50 and screened annually or biennially to age 74. Compared to no screening, absolute mortality reduction was 4.6 (biennial 50–74), 5.9 (biennial 40–74) and 7.9 (annual 40–74) fewer deaths per 1000 women. The absolute rate of diagnosis of advanced cancers (Stage 2, 3 and 4) falls in favor of earlier stages as the number of lifetime screens increases. Annual screening beginning at age 40 until age 74 would provide an additional reduction of 2 and 3.3 breast cancer deaths per 1000 women compared to biennial screening beginning at ages 40 and 50, respectively.
