Technical advancements in the field of capacitive sensing and the availability of multi-channel capacitance-to-digital converters have led the way for improved sensing capabilities in the field of wood moisture content. A four-channel, planar capacitance sensor was developed and calibrated on maple veneers. The calibration material was conditioned to equilibrium at three different relative humidity levels. Optimal penetration depths were determined statistically and analytically. A rule of mixture approach and a volumetric model were applied to derive the moisture content at distinct layers. Different levels of discrepancy of the fit were observed among and within the different electrodes and calibration datasets. The sensor was able to determine changes in moisture content and positive moisture content gradients, rather than averages, with the limitation of detecting negative moisture gradients. Microscale X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is discussed as a technique for identifying 3D adhesive distribution in wood-adhesive bondlines. Visualization and material segmentation of the adhesives from the surrounding cellular structures require sufficient gray-scale contrast in the reconstructed XCT data. Commercial wood-adhesive polymers have similar chemical characteristics and density to wood cell wall polymers and therefore do not provide good XCT attenuation contrast in their native form. Here, three different adhesive types, namely phenol formaldehyde, polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and a hybrid polyvinyl acetate, are tagged with iodine such that they yield sufficient X-ray attenuation contrast. However, phase-contrast effects at material edges complicate image quality and segmentation in XCT data reconstructed with conventional filtered backprojection absorption contrast algorithms. A quantitative phase retrieval algorithm, which isolates and removes the phase-contrast effect, was demonstrated. Micro X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was used to analyze the 3D adhesive penetration behavior of different wood–adhesive bondlines. Three adhesives, a phenol formaldehyde (PF), a polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI), and a hybrid polyvinyl acetate (PVA), all tagged with iodine for enhanced X-ray attenuation, were used to prepare single-bondline laminates in two softwoods, Douglas-fir and loblolly pine, and one hardwood, a hybrid polar. Adhesive penetration depth was measured with two separate calculations, and results were compared with 2D fluorescent micrographs. A total of 54 XCT scans were collected, representing six replicates of each treatment type; each replicate, however, consisted of approximately 1500 individual, cross-section slices stacked along the specimen length. As these adhesives were highly modified, the presented results do not indicate typical behavior for their broader adhesive classes. Still, clear penetration differences were observed between each adhesive type, and between wood species bonded with both the PF and pMDI adhesives. Furthermore, penetration results depended on the calculation method used. Two adhesive types with noticeably different resin distributions in the cured bondline, showed relatively similar penetration depths when calculated with a traditional effective penetration equation. However, when the same data was calculated with a weighted penetration calculation, which accounts for both adhesive area and depth, the results appeared to better represent the different distributions depicted in the photomicrographs and tomograms. Additionally, individual replicate comparisons showed variation due to specimen anatomy, not easily observed or interpreted from 2D images. Finally, 3D views of segmented 3D adhesive phases offered unique, in-situ views of the cured adhesive structures. A phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive was uniformly tagged with iodine such that it yielded sufficient X-ray computed tomography (XCT) gray-scale contrast for material segmentation in reconstructed wood-composite bondlines. Typically, untagged adhesives are organic and have a similar solid-state density as wood cell-walls, and therefore cannot be segmented quantitatively in XCT data. The iodinated PF development involved analysis and comparison of three trial adhesives containing rubidium, bromine, or iodine. Adhesive tag efficacy was measured in terms of X-ray absorption contrast enhancement and tag uniformity along the adhesive polymers. Cured adhesive density, tag element, and concentration were each found to significantly impact XCT contrast results, which in turn agreed with theoretical X-ray attenuation predictions for each resin. Ion chromatography confirmed the absence of free iodide in the liquid PF prior to bonding, and fluorescence microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed that iodine tags remained associated with the cured adhesive polymers. XCT and EDS results also demonstrated that when contrast agents are simply mixed into resins, rather than attached to the polymer chains, they are free to migrate independent of the penetrating adhesives during bonding. This then can cause complications with quantitative segmentation and analyses. The iodinated PF yielded consistent and uniform XCT gray-scale contrast; its formulation could be adjusted for other viscosity or molecular weight distribution, which would affect its penetration behavior. Low-density hybrid poplar wood ( Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa) was densified by mechanical compression under saturated steam, superheated steam, and transient conditions at temperature levels of 150, 160, and 170°C. Furthermore, compression of wood under saturated steam conditions at 170°C, followed by post-heat-treatment at 200°C for 1, 2, and 3 min, was performed. To determine the influence of compression treatment on the set recovery, specimens were subjected to five cycles of water soaking and drying. Modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of specimens compressed under saturated steam conditions at 170°C and post-heat-treated at 200°C were determined in the dry condition and after five soak/dry cycles. Higher temperature of the compression treatment resulted in lower equilibrium moisture content, while the steam conditions during the treatment and the post-heat-treatment did not have significant effect. Furthermore, the highest degree of densification was obtained in specimens compressed under saturated steam conditions at 170°C and post-heat-treated at 200°C. The steam condition and temperature influenced the set recovery of compressive deformation. Reduced hygroscopicity does not necessarily imply reduced set recovery. The results established that considerable fixation of compressive deformation can be obtained by compressing the wood in a saturated steam environment and by post-heat-treatment at 200°C. In this paper, the compressive deformation of hybrid poplar wood ( Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa) at high temperature (150, 160, and 170°C) and under various conditions of steam pressure was studied. Temperature and conditions of steam environment affected the relative density change and creep deformation during compression, as well as properties of the resulting densified material. While the temperature significantly affected the compression deformation of specimens compressed under transient and superheated steam conditions, temperature within the range studied had little effect on the compressive deformation in saturated steam. In all tested conditions, compression deformation was achieved without cell wall fractures. Higher temperature of compression, regardless of steam condition, resulted in lower equilibrium moisture content. In specimens compressed under saturated steam, the modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were increased proportionally to the increase in density, while the compression under superheated steam produced lower increase in the MOE and MOR than expected based on the increase in density. Density profile relation to hardness of VTC wood composites was evaluated using X-ray densitometry and modified Brinell hardness method using different applied forces. Moreover, surface elasticity was evaluated. Prior to lamination, the low-density hybrid poplar ( Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa L.) and Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii L.) thin boards were compressed to 1.22 or 1.14 g/cm, respectively. Two different kinds of laminations were made, either single layer of 1.5 mm thickness or two 1.5-mm layers bonded to unmodified wood. The results show that thicker laminate has a great positive influence on Brinell hardness. This study suggests that results from the existing method for Brinell hardness are not comparable, and if applied force is chosen without restraint, the effect on the hardness value is significant for inhomogeneous wood composites. The main objective of this study was to investigate the properties of polymer composites reinforced with grape cane fibers. The fibers were subjected to a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment at two treatment concentrations to extract the fibers as well as fiber surface treatment. Panels were fabricated by hand lay-up and compression molding according to different fiber types, namely outer bark (OB) and whole (W) fibers. The whole fiber was a mixture of OB and inner bark (IB) fibers. Grape cane fibers were used as the reinforcement material for unsaturated polyester (UPE) resin panels. Acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) was used as a reactive diluent material with the UPE resin, and the results were compared with panels prepared with commercial styrene–UPE. There were inconsistent alkali treatment concentration effects on the mechanical properties and water absorption. However, panels fabricated with the whole bark fibers that have been treated with 1 wt % NaOH and had AESO–UPE resin resulted in the best tensile and flexural strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The influence of the viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) of wood on its surface chemistry, wettability, and surface free energy was evaluated. The changes in surface chemistry were studied by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Wettability was determined on the basis of the contact angle of water, using the Wilhelmy plate method. Surface free energy was determined according to the Owens Wendt Rabel and Kaelble (OWRK) theory, using the contact angle data of diiodomethane and formamide. The studied material was wood of the low-density hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa), which was densified to three different degrees of densification (63%, 98%, and 132%) using the VTC process. The results, based on the FTIR spectra, revealed that the VTC process caused minor chemical changes on the wood surface. However, wettability changed significantly. The VTC wood surface exhibits rather hydrophobic behaviour. Evaluation of the surface energetics using the OWRK approach showed that total surface free energy dropped significantly due to the VTC process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Dielectric analysis (DEA) was conducted for continuous in-process monitoring of the curing of phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive. The influence of wood moisture content (MC) on the dielectric signal obtained in the PF adhesive bond was examined. The cure kinetics of the PF adhesive was evaluated at five different press temperatures, ranging between 120 and 200°C. The results showed that dielectric changes monitored by a LCR meter (impedance analyzer) and fringe-field sensor were related to the PF adhesives cure—which involves chemical reaction and water movement/diffusion from the adhesive bond line—but not related to the changes of the moisture in the wood. The rate of cure was strongly affected by the press temperature. The higher press temperatures induced a faster temperature rise in the PF adhesive bond, and thus accelerated the curing process. An nth-order kinetic equation was fit to the DEA degree of cure data to demonstrate the utility of DEA to characterize PF adhesive cure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A mathematical model of the hot-pressing consolidation process for manufacturing a multi-layered oriented strand composite is developed and tested. Such a process model requires independent physical properties and user-specified structure for each layer of the mat. The model uses two-dimensional (slow variation is assumed in the third dimension) heat- and mass-transfer theory and a viscoelastic compression model. The through-the-thickness (vertical) density profile (VDP) was found to be highly dependent on the initial moisture content gradient, internal mat strand properties, and hydrothermal compressive response of the mat. The VDP predicted by the model showed good agreement with experimental results. The proposed mathematical model thus shows promise as a tool to analyze optimally design-oriented strand composites. A novel wood-based composite has been developed for use in structural applications. The process was designed to utilize rapidly-grown, low density, wood species. Plantation grown radiata pine is particularly well suited to this process. This is a laminated composite, where the lamina may be comprised of various materials, some of which have been treated with the viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) process. The VTC process increases the density of wood, without causing fractures in the cell wall, thus increasing strength and stiffness of the wood material. The process may be applied to veneer, sawn wood, or strand composites. The VTC lamina is then bonded to other lamina to produce the final product. The strength and stiffness of this VTC composite exceeds any wood-based composite that is currently on the market. For example, modulus of elasticity in bending of over 20 GPa is easily obtainable. Viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) is an excellent method for improving the physical properties of low density woods, but it has little effect on resistance to microbial degradation. The potential for improving durability through pre-impregnation with either phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) or tung oil was investigated in laboratory tests. Tung oil had little effect on decay resistance; while PF resins markedly improved durability against both white and brown rot fungi. This work investigated the feasibility of using western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) as a material to manufacture oriented strandboard (OSB) panels. Four different material combinations of juniper sapwood, heartwood, and fibrous bark were compared with regular southern yellow pine (Pinus sp.) strands. The OSB panels were made at an oven-dry density of 560 kg/m3. One pine control panel was also made at a higher density of 650 kg/m3 with a 5% addition of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin and a 0.5% addition of wax. The single-layer panels were formed with a hot press, and the physical and mechanical properties were tested according to the ASTM standard D1037 (2020). The testing indicated that western juniper is a potential material for manufacturing of OSB panels. The properties of the juniper panels were equivalent or slightly better than those of the southern yellow pine panels at the same density level, except for the modulus of elasticity (MOE). The quality of wood composites is dependent on the bondlines' performance and their moisture resistance. The effect of moisture intrusion into bondlines is the focus of this study. The strain profile in the bondline during loading was investigated and the effects of weathering on the bondline were quantified by digital image correlation (DIC), while load deflection data were collected from lap-shear tests (LShTs). A total of 75 LShTs were evaluated including four different adhesive types with Douglas-fir wood, out of which 39 served as controls and 36 as substrates for weathering. The effect of weathering on failure load was not statistically significant. Only the bonded surface and adhesive type have significant effects on failure load, as well as the three-way interaction between the bonded surface, adhesive, and weathering, as revealed by three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). In the present study, fast-grown western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) was subjected to a thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) treatment. Bond-line shear strength and durability were evaluated, and three parameters (substrate density, adhesive type and amount of adhesive spread) were investigated. To understand how THM processing affects bond performance, surface roughness and cell morphology of wood, before and after THM treatment, were observed. Adhesive penetration depths and patterns in untreated wood and THM-treated wood were also examined. In addition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis of bond-line and microscopic observation of interphase region were conducted. Results revealed that polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI) and polyurethane (PUR) had better bonding performance than phenol formaldehyde resin (PF). THM treatment improved bond durability, and THM plywood met the adhesive bond requirements of exterior plywood. THM treatment reduced surface roughness and porosity of wood. Adhesive penetration patterns were different in untreated wood and THM-treated wood and were affected by amount and type of adhesive. Pathways for adhesive flow into western hemlock were primarily tracheid lumens, ray cell lumens and the interconnecting pits. PF is the only adhesive that showed no evidence of flow via ray tissues or cell wall penetration. Since bond-line shear strength largely depends upon the weakest link across the laminas, ultimate strength or percent wood failure does not always depend merely on adhesive penetration. In addition, FTIR analysis showed different chemical reactions and bonding mechanisms, which provides a possible explanation of THM-caused changes in bonding performance at the molecular level. Green building practices have created an opportunity for the forest products industry to become a leader in the creation of in- novative building products derived from renewable materials. In other industries, sandwich composites have proven to be efficient structures by meeting structural demands of traditional panel products while consuming less material. A prototype molded-core sandwich panel made of span-rated oriented strand board (OSB) facings and a bidirectional molded wood-strand core was produced. Critical mechanical properties were evaluated to determine the feasibility of this product for use in building applications. The goals of this study were to generate details on structural performance of the product, validate the design, and provide suggestions for future product development. Results indicate that this molded-core panel performs particularly well in flexure while connection properties had the largest scope for improvement. Sufficient performance was observed to validate the design, warranting production and testing of panels sized for end-use. Future product development should explore different connection systems, perform detailed engineering analyses of the mechanical properties necessary for complete structural design, and characterize physical properties of the panel. Hybrid poplar ( Populus deltoides × Populus trichocarpa) and Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii) wood specimens were densified with three variations of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) treatment. The THM treatments differed in the steam environment, including transient steam (TS), saturated steam (SS), and saturated steam with 1-min post-heat treatment at 200 °C (SS+PHT). The bending properties, FTIR spectra, and colour of the THM wood specimens were studied before and after exposure to two different wood decay fungi, brown rot Gloeophyllum trabeum, and white rot Trametes versicolor. The results showed that the performance of densified hybrid poplar wood was considerably poorer than the performance of Douglas-fir heartwood. The FTIR spectra measurements did not show changes in the densified hybrid poplar wood, while some changes were evident in densified Douglas-fir specimens. After fungal degradation, the most prominent changes were observed on the SS+PHT specimens. Colour is one of the most important parameter predominantly influenced by the wood species and the intensity of the densification process for both wood species, while after fungal exposure, the colour of all densified Douglas-fir specimens obtained more or less the same appearance, and densified hybrid poplar specimens resulted in lighter colour tones, indicating that the pattern of degradation of the densified and non-densified specimens are similar. The 3-point bending test results determined that the THM treatment significantly increased the modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the densified wood specimens, while fungal exposure decreased the MOE and MOR in hybrid poplar and Douglas-fir specimens. Bond performance of hygro-thermally compression densified wood was studied using hygro-thermally treated and control yellow-poplar wood (Liriodendron tulipifera). Opening mode double cantilever beam fracture testing and cyclic boiling were used to evaluate bond performance. Phenol–formaldehyde (PF) film and polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) adhesives were used to bond specimens for fracture testing. Fracture toughness of hygro-thermal samples bonded with PF film was significantly higher than control samples, while no difference was found for densified samples. Fracture toughness of densified samples bonded with pMDI was significantly higher than control samples, however no change was seen for hygro-thermal samples. Cyclic boiling reduced the fracture toughness of hygro-thermal fracture samples only, irrespective of adhesive type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Naturally durable wood species such as western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) are a potential source of bio-based wood preservatives for the improvement of non-durable timber species. This research investigated the durability of southern yellow pine (Pinus sp.) and western juniper lumber or strandboard. Single layer panels were made with six different types of wood or wood treatments: southern yellow pine, mixed juniper sapwood and heartwood, sapwood, heartwood, sapwood strands impregnated with juniper oil prior to and after panel manufacturing. Panels were fabricated with 560 kg/m3 oven-dry density with 5% of PF resin and 0.5% of wax. Durability testing was performed with the brown rot fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum and Rhodonia placenta and the white rot fungus Trametes versicolor. Internal bond as a crucial parameter of OSB was measured. Tests revealed that juniper heartwood and juniper heartwood strandboards were highly decay resistant, and juniper oil pre- and postimpregnation strandboard manufacture imparted increased resistance to decay against one brown rot fungus, Gloeophyllum trabeum. Juniper strandboard manufactured from non-impregnated strands showed significantly higher internal bond than pine. These results suggest there is excellent potential for manufacturing highly decay-resistant OSB from juniper, especially from heartwood and that juniper oil can increase the durability of juniper sapwood strandboard. Densification techniques, combined with other treatment processes, helping additionally to improve wood properties, play an important role in wood modification. An innovative example of this combination with other techniques is the viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) process. In this study, material of poplar wood from fast growing short rotation plantation (SRP), modified by VTC process, was used for investigation and results were compared with non-modified native wood of plantation grown poplar. Selected physical and mechanical properties, i.e., density, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were investigated. The material, used for this investigation, was obtained from plantation grown poplar clone Max-4 (Populus nigra x Populus maximowiczii) from the Czech Republic. Results show that compression and heat treatment of the viscoelastic thermal compression process lead to significant changes in physical and mechanical properties of the treated material. The density of material depends on the degree of densification and has a crucial effect on properties. The goal of this study was to examine the improvement of properties of SRP poplar clone after applying the VTC densification process. Property improvement of plantation grown poplar wood has a huge potential for future use of this low-cost and fast-growing material, which would save high value materials for special uses. The paper presents the results of experimental research performed with native hornbeam and Robinia stem - and branch wood of forest origin as well as property - modified wood from poplar of forest and plantation origin. Results show higher density and strength properties of different branch assortments, enabling native wood material application in special higher utilization demands. In the case of lower stem wood properties of forest or fast-growing plantation poplar (low density, strength, moisture related behaviour, durability), quality improvement due to wood impregnation shows amazing modified new properties, making possible utilizations even under highe rmoisture conditions or strength as well as hardness demands. First applications in flooring material or moist-room equipment have been tested or are under development. Especially the application of thermal-treatment, combined with wood compression or the use of renewable impregnation agents from regrowing plant materials (liquids with higher content of phenolic compounds from pyrolysisthermal treatment or hydro-thermal carbonisation processes) enhancec the possibility of eco-friendly methods of wood modification or wood impregnation. The importance of adhesion in production of wood-based composites is well-known. Adhesive penetration and interphase morphology play an important role in bond strength and product performance. Many studies offered different methods for interphase characterization and analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to analyze the bondline. Most of the quantitative methods were developed for bonded assemblies of veneer or wood blocks. Adhesive penetration measurement in particulate wood-based composites is the main scope of this study. For this purpose, uniform oriented strand board with veneer strands was produced by the use of phenol formaldehyde resin with 2, 6, and 10 % strand moisture content (MC). The strands were formed into well-organized mats to achieve a uniform structure for the composite. Cross-section specimens were prepared from each board and observed by epifluorescence microscopy. Six positions for growth-ring angle in adhesive joints were denoted to evaluate penetration in different directions of the wood. Four parameters were also determined to quantify resin penetration patterns by counting the quantity of the main anatomical elements of wood, which were filled with resin. Finally, it was determined that this method could recognize the differences between adhesive penetration in boards produced with different level of strand MC. Resin penetration in strands with 6 and 10 % MC was the greatest. Growth-ring angle of the strands influenced penetration as it was increased when both strands meet each other in an oblique position, although this effect was significant only in maximum penetration depth in fibers. In this study, birch ( Betula pendula L.) veneers were simultaneously densified and dried using a contact drying method at pressures of 1.5 and 3 MPa at 130 °C and compared with veneer dried in a laboratory-scale convective type dryer. Compression rate, thickness swelling, and the density profiles of the veneers were investigated. Furthermore, the microstructure of densified veneers was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A maximum veneer compression rate of 9 % was achieved at a pressure of 3 MPa. Under these conditions, the veneers were, on average, densified from 504 to 574 kg m (approximately 14 %). After water soaking, full set-recovery-recovery to the initial thickness-occurred. However, the swelling rate was lower for the densified veneer. Density profiles measurements showed that densification occurs throughout the veneers. The SEM images showed that the surface of the densified veneers were smoother, whilst no cracks were detected due to densification. Densification seemed to occur in vessels. Viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) is a type of thermal-hydro-mechanical (THM) processing that requires only a short processing time. THM processing causes some chemical transformations, the nature and extent of hydro-thermolysis depends on the special treatment conditions and the chemical nature of wood species. In the present study, the chemical transformations of the cell wall components and wood extractives during VTC treatment were investigated, and correlation between chemical characterizations and observed property changes was analyzed. For this purpose, the content of extractives and pH values were determined, and FTIR analysis was performed on extractable substances, extract-free wood, holocellulose, α-cellulose and lignin. Two temperatures and two steam exposure times were adopted to determine the influence of processing conditions on chemical characterization of Tsuga heterophylla. The results revealed that THM treatment caused a series of chemical reactions in extractives. Treatment temperature and conditioning time have significant influence on chemical changes of extractives. For all of the VTC treatments used in this study, no significant changes occurred in the lignin and α-cellulose components. The paper describes for the first time the analysis of the structure of compressed wood using computed tomography. The anatomical structures of Douglas-fir and hybrid poplar before and after densification with the viscoelastic thermal compression (VTC) process were described by pore size distributions and mean pore sizes and compared. The compression of Douglas-fir mainly affected earlywood, while the compression of hybrid poplar mainly occurred in the vessels. In both wood species, the densification resulted in a significant decrease in the pore volumes. The porosity decreased to less than half of the original value for Douglas-fir earlywood and to approximately one-quarter for the vessels in hybrid poplar. The relevant mean pore sizes also decreased dramatically to about one-quarter compared to the original values. In contrast, latewood in Douglas-fir and libriform fibers in hybrid poplar are quite stable under compression. Douglas-fir latewood retained its original structure after compression and did not show any reduction in pore size. The results confirmed that the anatomical structure of VTC densified wood can be described by pore size distributions and mean pore sizes. Purpose – This paper describes a practical approach to implement computational steering for problem solving environments (PSEs) by using WBCSim as an example. WBCSim is a Web based simulation system designed to increase the productivity of wood scientists conducting research on wood-based composites manufacturing processes. WBCSim serves as a prototypical example for the design, construction, and evaluation of small-scale PSEs. Design/methodology/approach – Various changes have been made to support computational steering across the three layers – client, server, developer – comprising the WBCSim system. A detailed description of the WBCSim system architecture is presented, along with a typical scenario of computational steering usage. Findings – The set of changes and components are: design and add a very simple steering module at the legacy simulation code level, provide a way to monitor simulation execution (alert users when it is time to steer), add an interface to access and visualize simulation results, and perhaps to compare intermediate results across multiple steering attempts. These simple changes and components have a relatively low cost in terms of increasing software complexity. Originality/value – The novelty lies in designing and implementing a practical approach to enable computational steering capability for PSEs embedded with legacy simulation code. An XML datasheet is tailored for each model. Surface energy of yellow-poplar wood from three wood treatment groups was studied using sessile-drop contact-angle measurements and the Chang acid–base model for surface energy calculation. Water, glycerol, formamide, ethylene glycol and α-bromonaphthalene were used as probe liquids. Wood treatments were control, hygro-thermal treatment and densification. Contact angle trends for densified and hygro-thermally treated wood were found to be the same. Total surface energy decreased with both hygro-thermal treatment and densification.
