Iron‐ and nitrogen‐doped carbon (Fe─N─C) catalysts have garnered attention owing to their high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, which is comparable to that of Pt/C catalysts. Among the various methods for designing Fe─N─C catalysts, the use of templates has been emphasized as a means to create hierarchical porous structures. This strategy has enabled the achievement of high ORR activity. In this study, we propose a method for manufacturing a catalyst with high ORR activity by maximizing the interactions between commercial silica templates and catalyst precursors. By manipulating the charge on the commercial silica surface and adjusting the pH of the dispersion, the catalyst fabricated through these methods exhibited superior ORR activity compared to Pt/C and recently reported nonprecious metal catalysts. Through diverse physicochemical and electrochemical analyses, we confirmed that this activity stems from the effectively generated hierarchical porous structure and the resulting high density of Fe─N active sites. This catalyst exhibited a kinetic current density of over 2.73 mA cm−2, which is more than double that of platinum and displayed a high ORR mass activity of 4.49 mA mg−1. This study was conducted to demonstrate the effect of the mass trapping of mosquitoes as an eco‐friendly physical control method. It was conducted at the Ansan Hwarang Auto Camping Site in Gyeonggi Province, Republic of Korea. The study period was approximately 1 month (from July 2 to July 30, 2018). Inner and outer traps were installed to control mosquitoes inside and outside the study area. The inner trap consisted of 5 digital mosquito monitoring system units placed inside the study area, whereas the outer trap included 26 MOSHOLE‐PRO units installed at 30 m intervals outside the study area. Both the inner and outer traps used carbon dioxide as an attractant. Additionally, the outer traps were grouped close to each inner trap using distance analysis and designated as Sn (n, inner trap number). According to the study results, analysis of the daily mean temperature and daily mean precipitation from 2017 to 2019 showed that the meteorological data were statistically insignificant. During the mass trapping period, the outer traps had the highest mean number of mosquitoes in the S1 group, whereas the other groups exhibited statistically similar results. Analysis of the mean number of mosquitoes in the inner trap confirmed a mean reduction rate of 59.39% through mass trapping, and the results were statistically significant (P < 0.001). This study confirms the effectiveness of mass trapping in reducing mosquito communities and suggests the possibility of creating mosquito‐free zones by targeting mosquitoes both inside and outside the study area. Herein, we report the significance of posttreatment in the design of high-performance Fe-N-C-type catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Enhancing the catalytic performance of Fe-N-C requires a postprocess for removing the aggregated iron species formed during high-temperature pyrolysis since they have a negative effect on ORR. We were able to obtain a catalyst precursor for the Fe-N-C reaction via pyrolysis with iron-adsorbed 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (FeDN), which was then treated with a concentrated HCl solution for the removal of the aggregated iron species produced. The HCl-treated FeDN was subsequently annealed at various temperatures to investigate the effect of the annealing process on the physical properties and ORR performance. The annealing temperature was a critical factor affecting the residual contents of impurities, as well as the active component and the electronic state of nitrogen. We also examined the influence of different types of acid (HCl, H2SO4, and HNO3) on the catalytic performance. The type of acid used for removing aggregated iron species had an impact on both the Fe contents and the relative nitrogen species content. Among the catalysts tested, the catalyst prepared by annealing the HCl-treated FeDN at 700°C had the best ORR performance. Although its initial ORR performance in acidic conditions was lower than that of a commercial Pt/C, it was more durable. In this study, we performed a genotyping-by-sequencing analysis and a genome-wide association study of a soybean mutant diversity pool previously constructed by gamma irradiation. A GWAS was conducted to detect significant associations between 37,249 SNPs, 11 agronomic traits, and 6 phytochemical traits. In the merged data set, 66 SNPs on 13 chromosomes were highly associated (FDR p < 0.05) with the following 4 agronomic traits: days of flowering (33 SNPs), flower color (16 SNPs), node number (6 SNPs), and seed coat color (11 SNPs). These results are consistent with the findings of earlier studies on other genetic features (e.g., natural accessions and recombinant inbred lines). Therefore, our observations suggest that the genomic changes in the mutants generated by gamma irradiation occurred at the same loci as the mutations in the natural soybean population. These findings are indicative of the existence of mutation hotspots, or the acceleration of genome evolution in response to high doses of radiation. Moreover, this study demonstrated that the integration of GBS and GWAS to investigate a mutant population derived from gamma irradiation is suitable for dissecting the molecular basis of complex traits in soybeans. Hollow Pt-based nanoparticles are known to possess the properties of high electrocatalytic activity and durability. Nonetheless, their practical applications as catalytic materials are limited because of the requirement for exhaustive preparation. In this study, we prepared carbon-supported hollow PtNix (x = the moles of the Ni precursor to the Pt precursor in the catalyst preparation step) catalysts using a one-step preparation method, which substantially reduced the complexity of the conventional method for preparing hollow Pt-based catalysts. In particular, this hollow structure formation mechanism was proposed based on extensive characterizations. The prepared catalysts were examined to determine if they could be used as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Among the investigated catalysts, the acid-treated hollow PtNi3/C catalyst demonstrated the best ORR activity, which was 3 times higher and 2.3 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C and acid-treated particulate PtNi3/C catalysts, respectively. Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA, or THC in the decarboxylated form), synthesized by cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.), is a cannabinoid that can be used as a therapeutic drug but is a dangerous psychoactive compound. Cannabis grown for industrial fiber hemp must contain little THCA to prevent misuse. Many attempts to develop new cultivars with low THCA contents have therefore been made. It is time-consuming and expensive to determine THCA in cannabis plant tissues by high-performance liquid chromatography, so we attempted to develop a simple and quick method for selected cultivars with low THCA contents. The diagnostic device, which is an immunoassay based on the principle of competitive binding of drug metabolites, was initially developed for human drug testing in urine. We aim to determine whether the diagnostic device can be applied to natural cannabinoids from cannabis plant. The devices were not suitable for aqueous extracts with methanol contents >20 %. The test (T) line on each device was less intense for leaf and flower extracts than the negative control (water). The THCA contents of water extracted leaves determined by HPLC and calculated based on the cannabidiolic acid contents were 7.5 and 15 μg mL−1 for SuperwomanS1 and Spectrum303 cultivars, respectively. When THCA and THC standards were loaded onto Abon devices, the T line disappeared at the THCA concentration 20 μg mL−1 and the THC concentration 1 μg mL−1, respectively. Using extracts of 0.2 g fresh leaves, SuperwomanS1 and Spectrum303 will give faint and strong T lines, respectively, indicating that the devices could be used to test cannabis tissue THCA contents against the international regulatory limit (≤ 0.3 % w/w). The results indicated that the THCA contents of cannabis tissues at the flowering stage can readily be estimated using drug diagnostic devices, making it convenient for cannabis growers and breeders to semi-quantify THCA. • THCA and THC in hemp plant tissues were determined by HPLC and diagnostic devices. • THCA contents were 0.12 % and 0.09 % in fresh leaves and 0.21 % and 0.39 % in dry flowers. • Fresh leaves contained 7.26 and 12.03 times more THCA in methanol than water extracts. • Device detection limit was ≤20 µg mL−1 THCA and 1 µg mL−1 THC in standards. • Diagnostic devices can be used to compare THC levels of hemp plants to regulations. Non-alcoholic fatty acid disease (NAFLD) is caused by a build-up of fat in the liver, inducing local inflammation and fibrosis. We evaluated the effects of probiotic lactic acid-generating bacteria (LAB) derived from a traditional fermented beverage in a mouse model of NAFLD. The LAB isolated from this traditional Korean beverage were screened using the human hepatic cell line HepG2, and Lactocaseibacillus paracasei HY7207 (HY7207), which was the most effective inhibitor of fat accumulation, was selected for further study. HY7207 showed stable productivity in industrial-scale culture. Whole-genome sequencing of HY7207 revealed that the genome was 2.88 Mbp long, with 46.43% GC contents and 2778 predicted protein-coding DNA sequences (CDSs). HY7207 reduced the expression of lipogenesis and hepatic apoptosis-related genes in HepG2 cells treated with palmitic acid. Furthermore, the administration of 109 CFU/kg/day of HY7207 for 8 weeks to mice fed an NAFLD-inducing diet improved their physiologic and serum biochemical parameters and ameliorated their hepatic steatosis. In addition, HY7207 reduced the hepatic expression of genes important for lipogenesis (Srebp1c, Fasn, C/ebpa, Pparg, and Acaca), inflammation (Tnf, Il1b, and Ccl2), and fibrosis (Col1a1, Tgfb1, and Timp1). Finally, HY7207 affected the expression of the apoptosis-related genes Bax (encoding Bcl2 associated X, an apoptosis regulator) and Bcl2 (encoding B-cell lymphoma protein 2) in the liver. These data suggest that HY7207 consumption ameliorates NAFLD in mice through effects on liver steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and hepatic apoptosis. Y2O3/TiO2 bilayer thin films and Y-doped TiO2 (YTO) thin films were deposited on a Ge substrate by atomic layer deposition at a substrate temperature of 250 °C. They were used as gate insulators to examine the electrical properties of Pt/TiN/TiO2/Y2O3/p-Ge and Pt/TiN/YTO/p-Ge metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitors. A 7 nm thick bilayer thin film showed a lower leakage current density by more than one order of magnitude compared to a YTO thin film with the same thickness due to the high conduction band offset between the Y2O3 layer and Ge substrate. However, the bilayer thin film showed a large hysteresis of 950 mV. On the other hand, the YTO thin film showed significantly reduced hysteresis of 120 mV due to the smaller slow trap density. The voltage acceleration factors of the bilayer thin film and YTO thin film were 1.12 and 1.25, respectively, higher in the YTO thin film. The interfacial trap density of the 7 nm thick bilayer and YTO thin films were 3.5 × 1011 cm−2 eV−1 and 2.7 × 1011cm−2 eV−1, respectively. The equivalent oxide thickness of the YTO film could be scaled down to 0.9 nm, and a leakage current density of 1.4 × 10−4A cm−2 at flat band voltage −1 V was achieved. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is currently one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. The high rate of mortality in pancreatic cancer patients is due to the inability to detect early-stage disease and the disease being highly refractory to therapy. Gemcitabine has been the standard chemotherapy for advanced pancreatic cancer patients for the last two decades. However, gemcitabine resistance develops within a few weeks of treatment, and the associated mechanism remains poorly understood. Therefore, a novel therapeutic strategy is needed to overcome the limited clinical efficacy of gemcitabine in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. In this study, we demonstrated that ET-1/ETAR axis gene expression was upregulated in pancreatic cancer cells after treatment with gemcitabine. Additionally, ETAR expression was significantly higher in tumor tissues than in normal tissues, and patients with high ETAR expression had a notably worse overall survival rate than those with low ETAR expression. Furthermore, our results revealed that bosentan, an ETAR antagonist, enhanced the growth-inhibiting and proapoptotic effects of gemcitabine on pancreatic cancer cells. Thus, our findings indicate that blockade of the ET-1/ETAR axis signaling pathway promotes the antiproliferative effect of gemcitabine on pancreatic cancer. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is severely impacting the world, and tremendous efforts have been made to deal with it. Despite many advances in vaccines and therapeutics, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants remains an intractable challenge. We present a bivalent Receptor Binding Domain (RBD)-specific synthetic antibody, specific for the RBD of wild-type (lineage A), developed from a non-antibody protein scaffold composed of LRR (Leucine-rich repeat) modules through phage display. We further reinforced the unique feature of the synthetic antibody by constructing a tandem dimeric form. The resulting bivalent form showed a broader neutralizing activity against the variants. The in vivo neutralizing efficacy of the bivalent synthetic antibody was confirmed using a human ACE2-expressing mouse model that significantly alleviated viral titer and lung infection. As a consequence of the climate change, localized torrential rainfall has increased in intensity and frequency in Northeast Asia. This work aims at studying the effect of rainfall intensity on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in a mid-sized mountain stream in Korea, where the summer monsoon flood is prevalent. Sampling was conducted along reaches in Gapyeong stream (42 km in length), central Korean Peninsula, from a period of July 2008-October 2009. The sampling collection was carried out within 48 h after every major rain occasion and rainfall intensity was quantified by using the total rainfall amount for three days. Both water velocity and Froude number were found to increase with respect to the increase of rainfall at all study sites. As a consequence, the habitat environment and benthic macroinvertebrate communities were apparently affected by the rainfall intensity along the stream reaches. The species richness and abundance of benthic macroinvertebrates were significantly decreased at a rainfall over 200 mm, while much less decreased at a rainfall below 100 mm. Furthermore, the richness and abundance of species generally decreased with an increase of rainfall and their decrease was more evident at the downstream site, as compared to the upstream and midstream one. Ethnopharmacological relevance Forsythia suspensa Fructus (FS) is used to treat various inflammatory disorders in traditional Oriental medicine, including gastrointestinal diseases, but its therapeutic potential in ulcerative colitis is unclear. Thus, we investigated any potential therapeutic effects of FS against intestinal inflammation and the bioactive constituents in FS. Materials and methods After the induction of colitis using 3% dextran sulfate sodium, FS (100 mg/kg/day) was administered orally during the experimental period. We evaluated body weight, bloody diarrhea, colon length, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. Subsequently, the bioactive constituents of FS were identified using UPLC/MS/MS. Results FS significantly decreased the body weight loss, colon length shortening, and tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 elevations induced by colitis compared with the negative control ( P < 0.05). Moreover, FS improved the colitis-induced histopathological damage to the colon, including epithelial necrosis, infiltration of inflammatory cells, ulceration, and submucosal edema. In phytochemical analyses, 7 flavonoids, 9 lignans, 13 phenolics, and 2 triterpenes were identified by comparison with the retention times and mass fragmentations of authentic standards. Conclusions We demonstrated beneficial effects of FS and its constituents, suggesting their potential for treatment of intestinal inflammation. The process sequence and device performances of the three-dimensional tri-gate field effect transistor (TGFET) were reported, where a fin-shaped Si channel with a 20 nm channel width and an 80 nm fin height was fabricated using the conventional i -line stepper, assisted by the double hard mask step-down (DHMSD) lithography process. The channel length was 150 nm. An atomic-layer-deposited Al 2 O 3 film with an equivalent oxide thickness of 1.9 nm and a TiN layer grown through another atomic layer deposition process were adopted as the high-k and metal gate, respectively, using the dummy gate process. The device performance was compared with that of the planar FET simultaneously fabricated on the same Si wafer. The ion implantation and Ni-silicide processes were also optimized for this process sequence. Both n- and p-type devices were fabricated. The TGFET showed a high on/off current ratio of ~ 10 6 , a low subthreshold swing of 105 mV/dec for the n-type device, and a small drain-induced barrier lowering of 30 mV for the n-type device, which were remarkably improved device performances compared with the planar FET device. These improvements were due to the improvement of the electrostatic control of the fin-shaped channel by the tri-gates, which coincides with the theoretical expectation and previous experiment results. Nevertheless, the p-type devices showed inferior performances compared with the n-type devices due to the excessive dopant diffusion from the source and drain regions into the channel. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD increases the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), depending on the extent and duration of intestinal inflammation. Increased IL-6 expression has been reported in IBD patients, which may be associated with intestinal barrier function through discontinuous tight junction (TJ). KIOM-MA is a specific agent for allergic diseases and cancer, and it is composed of several plants; these herbs have been used in traditional oriental medicine. We fermented KIOM-MA, the product of KIOM-MA128, using probiotics to improve the therapeutic efficacy via the absorption and bioavailability of the active ingredients. In this study, we demonstrated that KIOM-MA/MA128 exhibited anticolitis effects via the modulation of TJ protein. Interleukin-6 resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in the TER and an increase in the FITC-dextran permeability; however, pretreatment with 400 µg/ml KIOM-MA/MA128 resulted in a significant increase in the TER and a decrease in the FITC-dextran permeability via IL-6 induction. Furthermore, protein and mRNA TJ levels remained stable after pretreatment with 400 µg/ml KIOM-MA/MA128. Moreover, KIOM-MA/MA128 suppressed the expression of PLCγ1 and PKC. Introduction: The split-hand phenomenon refers to preferential wasting of the thenar muscles with relative sparing of the hypothenar muscles in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).Methods: We compared the split-hand index (SI) calculated from the compound muscle action potential (CMAP; SICMAP ) with that calculated from the motor unit number index (MUNIX; SIMUNIX ). We performed MUNIX on the abductor policis brevis (APB), first dorsal interosseous (FDI), and abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscles of 39 ALS patients and 40 age-matched, healthy controls. SI is derived by multiplying the CMAP (or MUNIX) recorded over the APB and FDI and dividing by the CMAP (or MUNIX) recorded over the ADM.Results: Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed good diagnostic accuracy for both indices, but better performance of SIMUNIX than SICMAP .Conclusion: SIMUNIX and SICMAP were useful in differentiating ALS patients from healthy controls. We investigated the drought effects on the colonization rate and pattern of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in newly created mesocosm wetlands in the central Korean Peninsula, from June 2011 to June 2013. The comparison was made between the initial colonization after mesocosm construction (pre-drought) and the recolonization after a drought event (post-drought) with a drought period of 50 days between them. In addition, we categorized communities according to their biological traits in relation to drought. Our results showed that aquatic vegetation abundance and covering degree were higher in post-drought than in pre-drought, thereby influencing rapid colonization. Drought-resistant benthic macroinvertebrates colonized rapidly in post-drought; consequently, the colonization speed was 2.5-fold higher in post-drought than in pre-drought. We classified the benthic macroinvertebrate taxa into three groups: (1) a resistant group which generally emerged after the initial colonization period (e.g., Mollusca, Turbellaria, and Oligochaeta); (2) a sensitive group with diverse life history strategies and biological traits such as active migration or population decline after drought disturbance (e.g., Diptera: Chironominae, Odonata:Orthetrum, Coleoptera:AgabusandRhantus); and (3) a seasonal group, which emerged only during certain periods and were not markedly influenced by drought (e.g., Ephemeroptera:Cloeon, Diptera: Culicidae, Odonata: Zygoptera andPantala). The life history traits of the caddisfly, Psilotreta locumtenens Botosaneanu ( Odontoceridae), were studied in two stream reaches with different thermal ranges (main and branch streams) of the Gapyeong Stream, a typical mountain stream located in the central Korean Peninsula. Psilotreta locumtenens larvae were quantitatively sampled monthly from November 2008 to July 2010, and biweekly during the emergence period (late April to early July), using a Surber sampler (30 × 30 cm). Adults were quantitatively sampled with a sweep net. Larval density in the main stream (324.21 ± 38.59 m−2) was higher than that in the branch stream (60.48 ± 10.86 m−2). The larvae hatched in the early summer and overwintered as 5th and 3rd instars in the main and branch streams, respectively. The emergence peak at the main stream was approximately 2 weeks earlier. The sex ratio at both sites was approximately 0.3. The life history in both streams was univoltine. Secondary production in the main stream was much higher than in the branch stream, owing to high larval densities, and the P/ B ratios at the two sites were similar. This study demonstrated remarkable differences in larval growth patterns and emergence peaks in P. locumtenens between the two stream reaches due to differences in accumulated degree days (230.30 DD) and other phenological cues such as daily mean threshold water temperature (9°C) during the ascending phase, despite their relatively small mean annual water temperature difference of 0.58°C. The market share of NAND flash-based storage devices (NFSDs) has rapidly grown in recent years since many characteristics, such as non-volatility, low latency, and high reliability, meet the requirements for various types of storage devices. However, the unique characteristic of NAND flash memories (NFMs), erase-before-write, causes problems for NFSDs from a performance perspective. Specifically, performance degradation is incurred by extra operations that serve to hide the bad characteristics of NFMs. In order to resolve this problem, many attractive methods have been proposed. Various algorithms for flash translation layers (FTLs) are representative methods that provide space redundancy to NFSDs for better performance. However, the amount of space redundancy is limited by the capacity of NFMs and thus, space redundancy is still insufficient for improving the performance of NFSDs. Consequently, a new type of redundancy, termed temporal redundancy, has recently been introduced for NFSDs. More precisely, the idleness of NFSDs is exploited so as to precede extra operations for NFSDs while minimizing the overhead of extra operations. In this paper, we propose an adaptive time-out method based on the Hidden-Markov Model (HMM) to efficiently utilize idle periods. In addition, we also suggest a simple scheduling scheme for extra operations that can be customized for general FTLs. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields performance improvements in terms of average write latency and peak latency, 74% and 76% better than the existing method, respectively, and approaching within average 9% and 5% of the optimal case, respectively. The biochemical compounds in kenaf leaves and flowers mainly consist of flavonoids, including flavonoid glycosides and floral anthocyanins. In the present study, we performed comparative transcriptome analysis using RNA-sequencing and identified putative genes involved in flower coloration in different flower developmental stages of three kenaf mutants including Baekma (white flower), Jangdae (ivory flower), and Bora (purple flower). A total of 36.1 Gb reads were generated for two kenaf accessions and 38,601 representative transcripts with an average length of 1350 bp were yielded, of which 33,057 (85.64%) were annotated against two databases. Expression profiling of the transcripts identified 1044 and 472 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among three mutants in the young bud and full bloom stages, respectively. KEGG enrichment analysis of these DEGs revealed that the representative pathway was "biosynthesis of secondary metabolites", including phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and flavonoid biosynthesis. Simple Summary: Bergmann's rule explains the phenomenon where populations and species of larger sizes are found at higher latitudes and colder environments, whereas populations and species of smaller size are found at lower latitudes and in warmer regions. In insects, adult sizes tend to be smaller in warmer environments than at cooler temperatures and higher latitudes; the response is called the temperature–size rule. Nannophya koreana is an endangered species in Korea and represents a flagship species for wetland conservation. We found that the body size of the larvae was smaller in a cold-water-temperature region than in a warm-water-temperature area, which is contrary to the rules mentioned above. The two regions were geographically close to each other, with no differences in air temperature and precipitation. We identified the reasons for the difference in water temperature between the two regions and established the relationship between temperature and body size in N. koreana. In addition, we analyzed how N. koreana compensated for low water temperature to maintain its life cycle, which is known as univoltine. Ecological rules such as Bergmann's rule and the temperature–size rule state that body-size decline is a universal response to warm temperatures in both homeotherms and poikilotherms. In the present study, we investigated the biological responses of Nannophya koreana, an endangered dragonfly species in Korea, by comparing body size in two habitats with large differences in water temperature, Mungyong-si (MG, terraced paddy fields) and Muui-do (MU, a mountainous wetland). To conserve the dragonfly populations, the collected larvae were photographed and released, and their head widths and body lengths were measured. There was no difference in the annual mean air temperature and precipitation between the two sites; however, the annual mean water temperature was substantially lower in MU than in MG. There was little difference in larval head width between the two sites; however, body length in the MU population was smaller than that in the MG population. Larval growth rate per 100-degree-days was 0.75 mm for MG and 1.16 for MU. The relationship between temperature and body size of N. koreana larvae showed opposite trends to Bergmann's rule and the temperature–size rule. Since the larval growth period during a year in MU was shorter than that in MG, the MU population potentially exhibits a higher growth rate as a mechanism of compensating for the low water temperature. Our study established the relationship between temperature and body size of N. koreana in two wetlands that had an obvious difference in water temperature despite being geographically close. Mutation breeding is useful for improving agronomic characteristics of various crops. In this study, we conducted a genetic diversity and association analysis of soybean mutants to assess elite mutant lines. On the basis of phenotypic traits, we chose 208 soybean mutants as a mutant diversity pool (MDP). We then investigated the genetic diversity and inter-relationships of these MDP lines using target region amplification polymorphism (TRAP) markers. Among the different TRAP primer combinations, polymorphism levels and polymorphism information content (PIC) values averaged 59.71% and 0.15, respectively. Dendrogram and population structure analyses divided the MDP lines into four major groups. According to an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), the percentage of inter-population variation among mutants was 11.320 (20.6%), whereas mutant intra-population variation ranged from 0.231 (0.4%) to 14.324 (26.1%). Overall, intra-population genetic similarity was higher than that of inter-populations. In an analysis of the association between TRAP markers and agronomic traits using three different statistical approaches based on the single factor analysis (SFA), the Q general linear model (GLM), and the mixed linear model (Q+K MLM), we detected six significant marker–trait associations involving five phenotypic traits. Our results suggest that the MDP has great potential for soybean genetic resources and that TRAP markers are useful for the selection of soybean mutants for soybean mutation breeding. Functional diversity research enhances our understanding of ecosystems and both their functioning and their responses to environmental variations. This study investigated the biological trait responses of benthic invertebrate communities to various environmental conditions in estuarine habitats. We analyzed benthic macroinvertebrate communities in freshwater and estuarine environments to compare their characteristics between estuary sites with and without artificial barriers. Moreover, we combined taxonomic analyses (species richness, abundance, and four community indices) with functional diversity indices and biological trait analyses. The major results are as follows: (i) the most important environmental factors shaping species distribution in estuarine habitats were salinity and electrical conductivity; (ii) comparing functional diversity indices, tidal estuaries revealed that seawater intrusion induced changes in species distribution and the dispersion of benthic macroinvertebrates; (iii) the presence or absence of artificial barriers in estuaries affected biological traits owing to the influence of specific functional strategies of certain species. Consequently, the presence or absence of artificial barriers in estuaries can lead to significant changes in habitat connectivity and functional diversity related to ecosystem functions. These findings indicate that the presence of artificial barriers can significantly influence the ecological dynamics of estuarine ecosystems, thereby affecting species distribution, functional diversity and habitat connectivity. Understanding these effects contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of ecosystem functionings, as it complements existing taxonomic findings and integrates information about the functional aspects of diverse ecosystems. The study was conducted in three phases from June to December 2023 in Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi. The weevils were most active between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m., with 85.72% being captured during this period. Adding pheromones to the food bait increased the capture rate by 6.95 times, and while adding food bait and ethyl acetate, and pheromones improved the capture rate by 3.14 times compared to using pheromones alone. The newly synthesized pheromone captured 2.69 times more weevils than the commercially available pheromone. The main activity of the red palm weevils was observed from 3:00 to 6:00 a.m., with 85.72 ± 3.39% being captured during this period, coinciding with cooler temperatures. When pheromones were added to the food bait, the capture rate increased by 6.95 ± 1.81 times. Combining food bait, ethyl acetate, and pheromones improved the capture rates by 3.14 ± 0.69 times compared to pheromones alone. The newly synthesized pheromone achieved capture rates 2.69 ± 0.07 times higher than those of the commercially available pheromone, confirming its suitability as a red palm weevil attractant. BACKGROUND: Soybean seeds contain 18–24% lipids, which are made up of 85% polyunsaturated fatty acids. Two of these (linoleic and linolenic acids) comprise essential fatty acids that are not synthesized in humans and animals. Linolenic acid plays a vital role in the maintenance of brain function and is a source of docosahexaenoic acid for retinal and nerve tissue, with its physiological functions being a focus of attention. RESULTS: We developed mutant soybean populations via gamma irradiation of Korean cultivars Danbaek and Daepung and evaluated the linolenic acid content of 78 and 154 M9 mutant progenies. We selected the four mutant lines with the highest linolenic acid contents based on 2 years of investigation of fatty acids. The selected mutant lines had linolenic acid contents that were 33.9% to 67.7% higher than those of the original cultivars and exhibited increased fatty acid desaturase (FAD) gene expression levels during seed development. We also identified nucleotide polymorphisms of FAD genes in the four mutant lines. Introduction: Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is characterized by recurrent episodes of reversible paralysis with hyperthyroidism. It is clinically similar to hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HOPP), which features significant ion-channel dysfunction and reduced muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV). However, the muscle membrane function in TPP is not known.Methods: For 13 patients with TPP and 15 age-matched controls, clinical assessment and serial neurophysiological testing, including nerve conduction, prolonged exercise (PE) testing, and MFCV. were performed.Results: MFCV values were elevated up to 1 year from the paralytic attack in TPP patients. In the group with a positive PE test, MFCV values were higher. There was no significant relationship between MFCV values and either hypokalemia or hyperthyroidism.Conclusions: Although clinical manifestations in TPP are similar to those observed in HOPP, TPP appears to feature an alternate pathogenic mechanism. As a consequence of climate change, localized torrential rainfall has increased in intensity and frequency in Northeast Asia under the influence of the monsoonal climate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of flood intensity on aquatic insect communities in a Korean stream, where the summer monsoonal flood is normal. Quantitative sampling was conducted according to stream reaches (upstream, midstream, and downstream sites) in Gapyeong stream, located in the central Korean peninsula, during July 2008-October 2009. Sampling was conducted within 48 hours after every rain event during the rainy season, and flood intensity was evaluated using the total amount of precipitation for 3 days before sampling. Precipitation was categorized in 100 mm increments. Water velocity and Froude number (Fr) were measured, and mean species abundance and species richness were determined. Habitat orientation groups (HOGs) were analyzed. Data were analyzed using nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) ordination and two-way analyses of variance . As a result, the velocity increased as precipitation increased at all sites, and the Fr at the upstream and midstream sites were below critical flow for all precipitation categories. The EPT-group (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera) together with Diptera were >90% in abundance at all study sites. The mean abundance of some major taxa (i.e., Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera) decreased significantly as precipitation increased, particularly, at the downstream site. The mean abundance of all HOGs was more influenced by the relatively large amount of precipitation (e.g., >200 mm) at all sites. According to NMS ordination, the amount of precipitation was the major factor determining the composition of aquatic insect communities in the study stream. In conclusion, aquatic insect communities in the Gapyeng stream were significantly influenced by the intensity of precipitation, and the impact was intensified at the downstream site. Stream restoration affects stream biodiversity by improving water quality and habitat environments. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used as indicators of changes in stream environment, and, therefore, the effects of restoration can be evaluated by a long-term monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrates. Cheonggye stream is an urban stream in Seoul, Korea, and a restoration project was conducted from July 2003 to September 2005. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term changes in the benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Cheonggye stream after the restoration project in 2005. A 6-year field study was seasonally conducted at five study sites in Cheonggye stream from November 2005 to October 2011. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled quantitatively using a Surber sampler (50 × 50 cm; mesh 0.25 mm, two replications per site). As a result, species richness of benthic macroinvertebrates rapidly increased after the restoration project and peaked (35 species per sample) in 2006 but gradually dropped to approximately 20 species up to the recent year. As a consequence, community indices changed gradually according to species richness and abundance: Dominance indices peaked in 2010 and species diversity indices ( H') peaked in 2007. According to a functional feeding group analysis, the composition of collector-filterers increased at first, but the decreased gradually to the recent year. In contrast, collector-gatherers showed an opposite tendency. The composition of clingers increased during the initial 4 years (2005-2008), whereas burrowers rapidly increased after 2008. The Cheonggyecheon ( Cheonggye stream), a downtown stream in Seoul, Korea, was restored by the historic Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project (2003-2005), and its discharge and other environmental conditions are artificially regulated throughout the year. The aim of this study was to assess temporal changes in benthic macroinvertebrates and their interactions with fish predators in the Cheonggyecheon. Sampling was conducted twice a year (spring and autumn) at three sections of the stream from 2006 to 2010 using a Surber sampler (50 × 50 cm) for benthic macroinvertebrates and a cast net (mesh size, 10 × 10 mm) and a kick net (mesh size, 5 × 5 mm) for fishes. Analyses of annual precipitation and most water quality parameters showed no significant differences across the study period ( P > 0.05). The species richness and density of benthic macroinvertebrates and fishes varied across the sampling period. Analyses of functional feeding groups and trophic guilds showed distinct trends, such as an increase in the number of insectivorous fish in the absence of invertebrate predators. Correlation and regression analyses for five major groups of benthic macroinvertebrates and fishes demonstrated that the density of certain groups of benthic macroinvertebrates (e.g. Tubificidae, Erpobdellidae, Baetidae, and Chironomidae) and insectivorous fishes (e.g. Gobioninae, Leuciscinae, Danioninae, and Gobiidae) were negatively correlated. In conclusion, in an artificially regulated stream like the restored Cheonggyecheon, where physical environments are nearly unchanged, fish predation can be a major factor controlling benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Abstract: One major obstacle in the clinical application of TRAIL as a cancer therapeutic agent is the acquisition of TRAIL resistance. We found that deficiency of TRADD sensitizes cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Enhanced cell death in TRADD−/− MEFs is associated with defective NF-κB activation, indicating that the pro-survival function of TRADD in TRAIL signaling is mediated at least in part via NF-κB activation. Moreover, siRNA knock-down of TRADD in cancer cells sensitizes them to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Thus, TRADD has a survival role in TRAIL signaling and may be one potential target for overcoming TRAIL resistance in cancer therapy. Rapeseed is the most important oil crop used in the food and biodiesel industries. In this study, based on single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) identified from genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), and an association study of flowering time, crude fat and fatty acid contents were investigated in 46 rapeseed mutant lines derived from gamma rays. A total of 623,026,394 clean data reads were generated with 6.6 million reads on average. A set of 37,721 filtered SNPs was used to perform gene ontology and phylogenetic analysis. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the rapeseed mutant lines gave eight groups based on flowering time and fatty acid compositions. Gene ontological analysis of the mutant lines showed that many genes displaying SNPs are involved in cellular processes, cellular anatomy, and binding. A total of 40 SNPs were significantly associated with flowering time (1 SNP), crude fat content (2 SNPs), and fatty acid content (37 SNPs). A total of 21 genes were annotated from fatty acid content SNPs; among them, nine genes were significantly enriched in reproductive processes, such as embryonic development, fruit development, and seed development. Purpose: The aims were to determine the optimal gamma ray dose for faba bean (Vicia faba) and to identify genetic variation and indel mutation frequency among mutants using target region amplification polymorphism (TRAP) markers. Materials and methods: Seeds from 10 elite lines were irradiated with gamma rays (50–700 Gy), and germination, survival rate, and representative morphological traits were measured. The extent of DNA damage was investigated using comet assays, and TRAP markers were used to evaluate genetic variation, genetic diversity, and mutation frequencies. Results: Germination percentages significantly decreased at doses >100 Gy. Survival percentages and morphological traits decreased with elevation in dose. The comet assays revealed that high irradiation doses decreased head DNA levels. Phylogenetic and principal component analysis of 555 individual faba bean plants resolved eight major groups. Genetic variation between controls and mutants was limited to within groups. Mutation frequencies were associated with gamma dose in each mutant line. Conclusions: The optimal gamma dose was 100–150 Gy on the basis of survival percentage and morphological response analysis. The TRAP markers distinguished mutant lines and showed association between mutation frequency and gamma doses. Climate change due to global warming and changes in land use increase the development time and distribution, as well as the abundance, of mosquitoes, thereby negatively affecting human life and health. In this study, we investigated the habitat characteristics of mosquito occurrence sites in Danwon‐gu, Ansan city, Korea, based on a daily record of civil pest complaints lodged at the Danwon‐gu Community Health Center. We considered two types of factors (natural and artificial) known to affect mosquito occurrence. We confirmed a total of 554 cases of mosquito occurrence from March 2014 to August 2017. The total study area was 49.11 km2, with urban areas constituting the largest proportion. Additionally, we investigated habitat preferences of mosquitoes in terms of terrain factors; generally, mosquitoes occurred at low elevations and on low slopes. Regarding the preference of oviposition sites, mosquitoes occurred at higher rates near streams and crops lands. The rate of mosquito occurrence tended to increase in areas with dense human populations. Abstract: This study was performed to clarify the ecological characteristics of a cave‐dwelling moth species, Triphosa dubitata Linnaeus (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), at Baram cave and at Ssang cave within Pyeongchang‐gun of Gangwon province in south Korea. We investigated T. dubitata population for 3 days from March 2013 to October 2013 (except September) and in January 2014. We used a section investigation method in the caves every month to determine their ecological characteristic. A nocturnal investigation using a high intensity discharge lamp adjacent to the entrance of the cave was conducted in parallel with a diurnal investigation using butterfly traps to investigate the movement of T. dubitata. In order to investigate the range of habitat temperature of moths, we used a dual laser targeting infrared thermometer to measure the cave temperatures. We caught individuals of T. dubitata L.: 8,574 individuals in Baram cave and 828 individuals in Ssang cave. As 9,095 individuals (97 %) appeared at a temperature of −3°C ~ 8°C, it was verified that the adults were living at specific temperatures. In addition, T. dubitata adults were not active outside the caves; they entered the cave as soon as they developed from pupa into adults. These results showed that T. dubitata depended on food plants outside of the cave during the egg–larva–pupa stages, and they used the cave as a habitat for long‐term survival when they develop into adults. Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder with aquaporin4-immunoglobulin G (NMOSD-AQP4) is an inflammatory disease characterised by a high female predominance. However, the effect of gender in patients with NMOSD-AQP4 has not been fully evaluated. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of gender in clinical manifestations and prognosis of patients with NMOSD-AQP4. Methods: The demographics, clinical and radiological characteristics, pattern reversal visual evoked potential (VEP) test results, and prognosis of 102 patients (18 males) with NMOSD-AQP4 were assessed. Results: Male patients had a higher age at onset (48.7 vs 41 years, p = 0.037) and less optic neuritis as the onset attack (17% vs 44%, p = 0.026), higher tendency to manifest as isolated myelitis over the follow-up period (67% vs 28%, p = 0.005), fewer optic neuritis attacks per year (0.08 vs 0.27, p < 0.001), and shorter relative P100 latency on VEP testing (97.1% vs 108.3%, p = 0.001). Moreover, male gender was significantly associated with the absence of optic neuritis attacks over the follow-up period independent of their age of onset. Conclusion: In NMOSD-AQP4 patients, gender impacts on disease onset age and site of attack. Methods: We assessed bilateral orbicularis oculi muscles using MUNIX, and the reference values and reproducibility of MUNIX and motor unit size index (MUSIX) were investigated in healthy subjects. Results: In this study, MUNIX was applied successfully to the orbicularis oculi muscles and showed good reproducibility. The correlation coefficients for MUNIX and MUSIX were 0.803 and 0.592, respectively, and the coefficients of variation were 20.9% and 8.5%, respectively. Conclusions: The MUNIX procedure for the orbicularis oculi muscle would be a useful tool for evaluating bulbar symptoms, especially in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Abstract: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are rare cells and the presence of these cells may indicate a poor prognosis and a high potential for metastasis. Despite highly promising clinical applications, CTCs have not been investigated thoroughly, due to many technical limitations faced in their isolation and identification. Current CTC detection techniques mostly take the epithelial marker epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), however, accumulating evidence suggests that CTCs show heterogeneous EpCAM expression due to the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). In this study, we report that a microchip filter device incorporating slit arrays and 3-dimensional flow that can separate heterogeneous population of cells with marker for CTCs. To select target we cultured breast cancer cells under prolonged mammosphere culture conditions which induced EMT phenotype. Under these conditions, cells show upregulation of caveolin1 (CAV1) but down-regulation of EpCAM expression. The proposed device which contains CAV1-EpCAM conjugated bead has several tens of times increased throughput. More importantly, this platform enables the enhanced capture yield from metastatic breast cancer patients and obtained cells that expressed various EMT markers. Further understanding of these EMT-related phenotypes will lead to improved detection techniques and may provide an opportunity to develop therapeutic strategies for effective treatment and prevention of cancer metastasis. • Facile synthesis of highly active ORR electrocatalyst by systematic control of raw form of pig blood. • Highly active sites for the ORR can be generated by toluene followed by hydrothermal treatment. • The highest performance pig blood derived electrocatalyst consisted of Fe 3 C and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. • Pig blood derived electrocatalyst exhibits 1.57 mA/cm2 @0.9 V kinetic current with 19 mV degradation after 10,000 cycles. Biomass derived carbon via hydrothermal carbonization are critically important for the catalysis research field requiring high activity with low cost. However, most of them present low activity due to low surface areas with large particle size originating from unnecessary compounds in raw status. Here, we report a porous carbon decorated with Fe 3 C/Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles via pretreatment of pig blood (PB) by employing solvent pretreatment and pyrolyzing in regulated environment using a Fe-porphyrin-type macrocycle as catalyst precursors. Importantly, the addition of toluene to the raw form of PB as pretreatment plays a significant role in not only producing the nanoparticles with porous carbon materials but also removing impurities that deteriorate the active sites of molecular nitrogen carbon (MNC) type catalysts during high-temperature activation. Furthermore, the temperature for hydrothermal treatment and pyrolysis influences oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances. The highest-performing PB-derived catalyst delivered its kinetic current and the degree of degradation (after 10,000 potential cycles) were 1.57 mA/cm2 (at 0.9 V) and 19 mV (half-wave potential), and those of Pt/C were 1.26 mA/cm2 and 43 mV, respectively. The catalysts were prepared by applying pretreatment to the PB and characterized systematically to investigate how such pretreatment influences the physical properties and ORR performances. Hibiscus species are rich in phenolic compounds and have been traditionally used for improving human health through their bioactive activities. The present study investigated the phenolic compounds of leaf extracts from 18 different H. acetosella accessions and evaluated their biofunctional properties, focusing on antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The most abundant phenolic compound in H. acetosella was caffeic acid, with levels ranging from 14.95 to 42.93 mg/100 g. The antioxidant activity measured by the ABTS assay allowed the accessions to be classified into two groups: a high activity group with red leaf varieties (74.71–84.02%) and a relatively low activity group with green leaf varieties (57.47–65.94%). The antioxidant activity was significantly correlated with TAC (0.933), Dp3-Sam (0.932), Dp3-Glu (0.924), and Cy3-Sam (0.913) contents (p < 0.001). The H. acetosella phenolic extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against two bacteria, with zones of inhibition between 12.00 and 13.67 mm (Staphylococcus aureus), and 10.67 and 13.33 mm (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). All accessions exhibited a basal antibacterial activity level (12 mm) against the Gram-positive S. aureus, with PI500758 and PI500764 exhibiting increased antibacterial activity (13.67 mm), but they exhibited a more dynamic antibacterial activity level against the Gram-negative P. aeruginosa. Fermented vegetable juices have gained attention due to their various beneficial effects on human health. In this study, we employed gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, direct infusion-mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry to identify useful metabolites, lipids, and carotenoids in vegetable juice (VJ) fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum HY7712, Lactobacillus plantarum HY7715, Lactobacillus helveticus HY7801, and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis HY8002. A total of 41 metabolites, 24 lipids, and 4 carotenoids were detected in the fermented and non-fermented VJ (control). The lycopene, α-carotene, and β-carotene levels were higher in VJ fermented with L. plantarum strains (HY7712 and HY7715) than in the control. Proline content was also elevated in VJ fermented with HY7715. Uracil, succinic acid, and α-carotene concentration was increased in VJ fermented with HY7801, while glycine and lycopene levels were raised in VJ fermented with HY8002. This study confirmed that each probiotic strain has distinctive characteristics and produces unique changes to metabolic profiles of VJ during fermentation. Al is doped to a SrTiO3 (STO) thin film grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to decrease the leakage current. One ALD cycle of Al2O3 is processed either at the top or at the bottom of the STO films, and the electrical properties are compared with those of the undoped STO films. The ≈3.5 nm‐thick seed layer is first deposited and crystallized through rapid thermal annealing, and from 5 to 20 nm‐thick main layers are subsequently grown for in situ crystallization of the main layer. When an Al2O3 deposition cycle is inserted below the first seed layer, the crystallization of the STO films is disturbed, and the bulk dielectric constant degrades from 149 (undoped STO) to 71. When the Al2O3 deposition cycle is performed after the STO main layer growth, however, the dielectric constant degradation is minimized (120). In both cases, the leakage current decreases 20 times compared with the undoped STO case because of the conduction band offset increase. Consequently, the equivalent oxide thickness and physical oxide thickness decrease from 0.71 to 0.63 nm and from 10.3 to 8.6 nm, respectively, through Al doping on the top of the STO films with a sufficiently low leakage current (<10−7 A cm−2). SrTiO3 (STO) films are grown via atomic layer deposition at 370 °C with a two‐step growth method. A 5‐nm‐thick seed layer is first deposited and annealed via rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at temperatures ranging from 450 to 650 °C, and the main layer is subsequently grown on the annealed seed layer for in situ crystallization. When the RTA temperature is 500 °C or lower, the seed layer remains amorphous, and the main layer is also grown in the amorphous phase. At the 550 °C seed annealing temperature, the STO film is partially crystallized, and at the higher annealing temperature, the STO main layer is fully crystallized. The oxygen diffuses through the vertically aligned grain‐boundaries during the crystallized film growth, which induces the oxidation–reduction reaction of the underlying Ru substrate. This reaction causes a higher growth rate in the crystalline phase. The large growth rate difference between the amorphous and crystalline regions induces a severe roughening of the main layer. When RTA is done at 600 °C, the film is mostly crystallized, and the main layer becomes smooth again. Consequently, a 0.52 nm equivalent oxide thickness is achieved with the low leakage current of 2.5 × 10−8 A cm−2 at the 0.8 V applied bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrical characteristics of metal–insulator–metal (MIM) capacitors consisting of a ZrO2/Al2O3/ZrO2 (ZAZ) dielectric film, a TiN bottom electrode (BE), and two different top electrodes (TEs; TiN and Ru) are examined. The enhanced property in the leakage current density versus equivalent oxide thickness (J–tox) plot is observed in the MIM structure with the Ru TE for the ZAZ film with specific film thickness of ≈4.6 nm. Especially, the J due to the electron injection from the TiN BE was significantly decreased for the Ru TE case compared to the TiN TE sample at 1–2 MV cm−1 electric field region. These extraordinary behaviors are found to have originated the change in the oxygen vacancy density in the ZAZ film, which induces Poole–Frenkel emission through the reaction with the active oxygen during the Ru TE fabrication process. The difference in nonlinearity of the capacitance–voltage (C–V) curve also indicates a different trap density at the interface of ZAZ and the TiN BE, suggesting a change in the oxygen vacancy density in the ZAZ film. Two different materials, sputter‐grown TiN and atomic layer deposition (ALD)‐grown Ru, are prepared for the top electrode (TE) material of ZrO2/Al2O3/ZrO2 (ZAZ)‐based capacitors for DRAM application. The electrical characteristics are investigated, and the capacitor with a Ru TE shows a much lower J value than the TiN TE at an oxide thickness (tox) value of about 1.0 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climatic change often affects life history aspects of aquatic insects. Long-term monitoring was conducted to understand the life history variability of the riverine mayfly Ephemera orientalis in the Han river, where habitat is largely disturbed by summer floods. Water level of the study site, Godeok-dong area in Seoul, is regulated by the Paldang Dam located approximately 14 km above the study site. E. orientalis often emerged in large numbers around the study area. Larvae were sampled monthly from April 2006 to July 2010 using a Surber sampler (50 × 50 cm, mesh 0.25 mm, two replicates). Additional qualitative sampling was conducted using a hand net. As a result, based on the larval body size distribution, E. orientalis had a univoltine life cycle with two distinct slow growing cohort groups: the S1group emerged during May-June and the S2 group emerged during August-September. Our previous study conducted in Gapyeong stream in Gyeonggi-do showed that E. orientalis normally had three cohort groups, S-1 and S-2 groups and the F-group (a fast growing cohort developed during May-August). However, the Han River population of E. orientalis lacked such a fast growing cohort. It is most probable that habitat disturbances caused by high water level during the rainy season negatively affected the development of the fast growing cohort (F-group) in the Han River area.
