Background Although the role of the vascular component in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease is widely accepted and retinal vascular abnormalities are commonly observed in Parkinson's disease patients, evidence connecting retinal vascular disorders with the risk of developing Parkinson's disease is limited. We aimed to investigate the association between retinal vascular occlusion (RVO) and the risk of developing Parkinson's disease in people over 60 years using a nationwide cohort. Methods From the 14-year South Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort, 11 210 incident RVO patients and 11 210 propensity scores, risk-matched controls were included. The incidence of Parkinson's disease was estimated with a Poisson regression. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to investigate the associations between RVO and the risk of Parkinson's disease. Results The incidence of Parkinson's disease was 664.4 cases per 100 000 person-years (95% confidence interval [CI], 599.7–736.0) in the RVO cohort. Individuals with RVO had an increased incidence of Parkinson's disease (hazard ratio [HR], 1.28; 95% CI: 1.10–1.49). Increased PD risk was predominantly observed in retinal artery occlusion patients (HR, 1.53; 95% CI: 1.11–2.12), male patients (HR, 1.67; 95% CI: 1.29–2.17), and 5 years after diagnosis (HR, 1.46; 95% CI: 1.10–1.93). Conclusions Our findings suggest that a common pathophysiological pathway, such as vasculature changes, may exist between RVO and Parkinson's disease. Introduction: The aim of our study is to analyze the association of usage and type of warming device with the risk of surgical site infection (SSI) in patients who underwent hip arthroplasty, and to analyze the factors that increase the risk of SSI if the warming device is not used. Materials and methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study identified subjects from data of "Evaluation of the Appropriate Use of Prophylactic Antibiotics". Included patients were defined as those who underwent elective unilateral hip hemiarthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty (THA). Patients were classified into no intraoperative warming device, forced air warming devices, and devices using conduction. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the association between warming devices and SSI. Results: A total of 3945 patients met the inclusion criteria. Compared to those who received an intraoperative warming device, the odds of developing SSI were 1.9 times higher in those who did not receive intraoperative warming devices (aOR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1–3.6). The risk of SSI was 2.2 times higher with forced air warming devices compared to devices using conduction but this difference was not statistically significant (aOR 2.2; 95% CI 0.7–6.8). The risk of SSI increased in males (aOR 2.8; 95% CI 1.1–7.2), in patients under 70 years of age (aOR 4.4; 95% CI 1.6–10.4), in patients with a Charlson's comorbidity index of 2 or higher (aOR 3.3; 95% CI 1.3–8.7), and in patients who underwent THA (aOR 3.8; 95% CI 1.7–8.3) when intraoperative warming devices were not used. Conclusions: The use of intraoperative active warming devices is highly recommended to prevent SSI during elective hip arthroplasty. In particular, male patients younger than 70 years, those with a high CCI, and those undergoing THA are at significantly increased risk of SSI if intraoperative active warming devices are not used. Downsizing a catalyst nanoparticle (NP) to a single atom (SA) has proven to be highly effective in increasing catalytic activity and decreasing the amount of catalyst required for various electrochemical reactions. However, insufficient stability of the single‐atom site catalysts (SACs) is still a significant challenge for their practical application. Here, SACs firmly bound to stable metal oxide NPs are proposed to dramatically increase the electrochemical activity and stability of SA‐based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Starting from a Ru‐infiltrated, Zr‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF), the tetragonal zirconium oxide (ZrO2‐x) NPs‐embedded carbon matrix is fabricated as support through facile pyrolysis. Simultaneously, Ru SAs as active sites are well dispersed on the surface of ZrO2‐x NPs due to the generation of oxygen vacancies in the tetragonal ZrO2‐x. The Ru‐ZrO2‐x SAC exhibits a 4–5 times higher mass activity than commercial Pt and Ru catalysts and superior durability due to strong metal‐support interaction (SMSI) between Ru atoms and ZrO2‐x substrate. Owing to their remarkable electrochemical activities, 1T phase transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have attracted considerable interest in recent decades. However, metastable 1T phases are difficult to prepare and readily change phases. Therefore, for the first time, a monolayer nanotubular 1T Ru dichalcogenide comprising 92% of the 1T phase is synthesized, which is the highest value ever obtained using solvothermal methods. In the tubular geometry, the 1T phase exhibits superior durability against various external stimuli and electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction. According to density‐functional‐theory‐based and molecular dynamics calculations, sufficiently curved architectures can change their bond identities to safely maintain 1T phases, hence providing a strategy for stabilizing metastable phases. We investigated the association between COC and risk of MOF, including fractures of the lumbar spine and pelvis, forearm, and hip, among newly diagnosed RA patients aged ≥ 60 years. A total of 8715 incident RA patients from 2004 to 2010 were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior cohort database. Participants were categorized into a good and bad COC group according to the COC index. The cumulative incidence of MOF was higher in RA patients with bad than in those with good COC (p < 0.001). The incidence rates of MOF were 4439 and 3275 cases per 100,000 person-years in patients with bad and good COC, respectively. RA patients with bad COC had an increased incidence of overall MOF (adjusted hazard ratio, 1.32; 95% confidence interval, 1.14–1.53), with the highest increase in risk being that of forearm fracture. This study aimed to determine whether significant associations exist between multicultural families and adolescent smoking risks in South Korea. Data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based survey from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed. Participants were classified into four family types (South Korean mother–foreign father, South Korean father–foreign mother, both foreign parents, and both South Korean parents) according to their parents' country of birth and smoking was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. A logistic regression analysis was used to examine the significance of the associations. Overall, 194,259 participants (boys: 94,793, girls: 99,466) enrolled in this study. Adolescents whose parents were born overseas were more likely to smoke than native South Korean adolescents (boys: odds ratio [OR] = 2.61, confidence interval [CI] = 1.79–3.81, girls: OR 3.94, CI 2.42–6.43). When the mother's country of birth was a developing country, there was an increased likelihood of girls smoking, and there was an increased likelihood of smoking among boys when the mother's country of birth was North Korea. When both parents were born abroad, and the mother's country of birth was a developing country, the likelihood of smoking risks among their multicultural teenage children increased. Background: Smoking or weight loss is a risk of tuberculosis (TB) development. However, the impact of weight change after smoking cessation on the occurrence of TB remains elusive. We aimed to determine the relationship between weight change after smoking cessation and the risk of TB development. Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study using the national database in Republic of Korea. Of the 10,490,491 subjects who underwent health check-up in 2009, we enrolled 9,953,124 subjects without a previous TB history and followed them until 2017. We divided all study participants into the following three groups: never, former, and current smokers. The primary endpoint was newly developed TB. Results: Among 9,953,124 subjects analyzed, 5,922,845 (59.5%) were never smokers, 1,428,209 (14.4%) were former smokers, and 2,602,080 (26.1%) were current smokers. The risk of TB development was significantly higher in current smokers than in never smokers (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 1.158; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.131–1.186). Among current smokers, individuals who stopped smoking and maintained weight after baseline evaluation had a significantly lower risk of TB development compared with those who continued to smoke (aHR 0.771; 95% CI 0.741–0.892). However, even after smoking cessation, individuals who lost weight were at a significantly higher risk of TB development compared with those who continued to smoke (aHR 1.327; 95% CI 1.119–1.715). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that smoking is a risk factor for TB and weight maintenance (neither gaining or losing) after quitting smoking might reduce the risk of TB development. Introduction: Housing is an important social determinant of health. We investigated effects of changes in housing tenure and affordability on depressive symptoms.Methods: Data of 9,956 individuals aged >20 years from the Korea Welfare Panel Study (2015-2020) were analyzed. Housing tenure was categorized as homeowners or tenants. Individuals with housing-related expenditures exceeding 30% of household income were defined as having housing unaffordability. Analyses using generalized estimating equations were conducted to evaluate the relationship between changes in housing tenure and affordability on depressive symptoms measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.Results: Individuals who became tenants (β = 0.326, p = 0.027) or were persistent tenants (β = 0.542, p<0.001) demonstrated significantly more severe depressive symptoms than persistent homeowners. Individuals with new (β = 0.562, p < 0.001) or consistent housing unaffordability (β = 1.032, p = 0.036) showed increased depressive symptoms compared with those with persistent housing affordability. Depressive symptoms were reduced in new homeowners and those who left housing unaffordability status (β = -0.807, p = 0.031). The interaction between housing tenure and affordability on depressive symptoms differed by age and household composition. Housing tenure at post-retirement age and single-person households were associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms, respectively.Limitations: All housing-related factors, especially different domains of housing insecurity including unstable neighborhoods or reasons for moving, have not been identified.Conclusions: Changes in housing tenure, affordability, and the two combined were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the degree of interactive effect varied among age groups and household composition. Subunit vaccines have been developed as promising vaccines with safety. However, subunit vaccines have difficulties in commercialization due to low efficiencies of delivery and immune response. As a result, studies of adjuvants that improve the immune-inducing ability of vaccines have been conducted globally. Aluminum salts (alum) have been extensively used as vaccine adjuvants, but they cannot induce potent cellular immunity. In this study, chitosan particles were fabricated by the precipitation-coacervation method on four different conditions. Ovalbumin (OVA), as a model antigen, was encapsulated in chitosan particles. The optimized fabrication conditions of chitosan particles were 8 mL/min drop rate of sodium sulfate and 0.5 mg/mL chitosan concentration in a sonication bath. Properties of the optimized chitosan particle were about 300 nm diameter, 0.1 polydispersity index, 16.2 mV zeta potential, and 90% loading efficiency. Chitosan particle-containing OVA showed 76% uptake efficiency by mouse macrophage cells and suitable cell viability. Immunization of mice by chitosan particles exhibited IgG1 titer and Interleukin-4 production of a similar level with the alum. Moreover, chitosan particles showed significantly enhanced IgG2 titer and Interferon-gamma production related to Th1-mediated cellular immune response. Efficient hydrogen production is one of the most important issues in the future energy economy. Dehydrogenation of formic acid has been extensively investigated for safe and easy hydrogen production. Thereby, various catalysts have been developed for aqueous formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD) reaction to efficiently produce hydrogen. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the reaction mechanism. Herein, to fundamentally comprehend the aqueous FAD reaction mechanism, we prepared Pd/C catalyst and performed controlled catalytic tests. The results demonstrated that the aqueous FAD reaction occurs through the formate anion dehydrogenation pathway. DFT calculation explained this by the observation that the charge of formate anion significantly mitigates the activation barrier of H-COO bond cleavage. As the prevalence of newborns with congenital anomalies continues to increase, the importance of prenatal diagnosis has been emphasized. Since the commonly used methods for prenatal diagnosis, such as amniocentesis/chorionic villi sampling, are invasive and increase the risk of miscarriage, cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) analysis has been widely used in clinic. However, it still has critical drawbacks, such as experimental failure at low fetal fraction of cffDNA and limited accuracy due to the need of statistical prediction, reducing the reliability of results. Therefore, there is an urgent need for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis (NIPD) with circulating fetal cells, such as circulating trophoblasts (cTBs), containing complete fetal genetic information. However, current technologies are biased (marker- and size-based) isolation approaches and are limited in practical utility in clinic. Here we introduce a fully automated, unbiased isolation platform for maximal yield and heterogeneity study of cTBs, using a continuous centrifugal microfluidics-based circulating trophoblast disc (CCM-CTBD). The CCM-CTBD achieved consistently high recovery rates using three different trophoblast cell lines with heterogeneous sizes and marker expressions. Next, we successfully isolated cTBs from maternal peripheral blood, and identified their surface marker and size heterogeneity. In addition, we found unreported cells with double-positive staining ( and ) and confirmed their fetal origin by identifying the Y chromosome. Moreover, the platform could isolate fetal cells as early as 8 gestational weeks. Background: Optic nerve head (ONH) and surrounding structures such as β-zone peripapillary atrophy (PPA) are important structures in glaucomatous pathogenesis. Thus, for understanding genetic components in glaucoma pathogenesis, it is necessary to evaluate the heritability of ONH and surrounding structures. The present study investigated the genetic influences on ONH and surrounding structures such as β-zone PPA and retinal vessels. Methods: A total of 1,205 adult twins and their family members (362 monozygotic (MZ) twin subjects (181 pairs), 64 dizygotic (DZ) twin subjects (32 pairs), and 779 singletons from 261 families), were part of the Korean Healthy Twin Study. ONH parameters including the vertical cup-to-disc ratio, the presence, the area and the location of β-zone PPA and the angular location of retinal vein were measured. The genetic influences on the structures were evaluated using variance-component methods. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values of axial length were highest among the parameters. The ICCs of the area and location of PPA were similar to those of vertical cup-to-disc ratio. However, retinal vessel angular locations showed low ICC values even in MZ twins. After age and sex adjustment, for axial length, vertical cup-to-disc ratio, the presence, area and location of PPA, the estimated narrow-sense heritability was 0.85, 0.48, 0.76, 0.50 and 0.65 in the right eye and 0.84, 0.47, 0.72, 0.46 and 0.72 in the left eye, respectively. The estimated narrow-sense heritability of angular location of the superior and inferior vein was 0.17 and 0.12 in the right eye and 0.13 and 0.05 in the left eye, respectively. Conclusions: ONH and surrounding structures such as vertical cup-to-disc ratio and the presence, the area and the location of β-zone PPA seemed to be determined by the substantial genetic influence, whereas the venous angular location did not. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with the development of dementia; however, the association of dementia risk with overall stress-related disorders is less known. This study investigated the association between stress-related disorders and the risk of dementia in a Korean nationwide sample cohort. The data analyzed in this study were acquired from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort between 2002 and 2013. Using a 1:3 propensity score matching, 8906 patients with stress-related disorders and 26,718 control participants were included in the analysis. Patients with stress-related disorders had a higher risk of developing dementia after adjusting for covariates (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.30) than control participants. Patients with PTSD showed the highest risk of increase (HR = 1.78) than those with other types of stress-related disorders. Patients with stress-related disorders showed the highest and significantly increased risk for Alzheimer's dementia (HR = 1.22, 95% CI 1.04–1.56). These results indicated an association between a history of stress-related disorders and the risk of dementia in the South Korean population. In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), long-term care insurance (LTCI), which can provide physical activity, might affect medical costs and utilization. We investigated the impact of LTCI on medical costs and utilization among patients with PD aged ≥60 years. Data were derived from the 12-year Korean National Health Insurance Service‒Senior cohort. Among patients with newly developed PD, the intervention group receiving LTCI was matched with the control group using propensity score risk-set matching. As medical costs and utilization may increase markedly immediately before LTCI allocation, the baseline period was set from 5 years to 1 year prior to receiving LTCI. Medical costs and utilization were recorded in six 1-year intervals thereafter. We compared medical costs and utilization between groups using a comparative interrupted time-series analysis. 5011 LTCI beneficiaries and 5011 propensity score- and risk-set-matched controls were included. The overall mean (standard deviation) age was 77.73 (5.7) years, and 66.2% were women, in both groups. LTCI benefit was associated with reduced overall direct medical costs for 5 years (post-intervention year 5: -270$, p = 0.033) , and overall hospital length-of-stay (LOS) for 2 years post-LTCI (post-intervention year 2: -2.43 days, p = 0.002), although medical costs and LOS increased immediately pre-LTCI implementation. The long-term care hospital LOS of LTCI beneficiaries increased relatively by 3-years post-LTCI implementation, particularly in those with a high Charlson Comorbidity Index score (post-intervention year 3: +2.65 days, p = 0.04). LTCI benefit stably decreased medical costs for patients with PD for 5 years, despite the steep increase immediately pre-LTCI benefit, but was limited in reducing medical utilization, particularly as reflected by LOS in long-term care hospitals and patients with comorbidities. LTCI could be a useful health policy to reduce PD disease burden. Purpose: To investigate whether diurnal fluctuation in intraocular pressure (IOP) can influence the result of the correlations between IOP-related factors and progression of normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Methods: Glaucoma progression was defined as visual field (VF) progression and changes in the optic disc and/or retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Two different methods were used to evaluate the impact of the diurnal fluctuation in IOP. ‘Conventional method’ used in previous studies included all IOP measurements during the follow up time. ‘Time adjusted method’ was used to adjust diurnal fluctuation in IOP with the preferred time. Mean IOP, long term IOP fluctuation and the difference between the lowest and highest IOP were calculated using both methods. Cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between IOP-related factors and NTG progression. Results: One hundred and forty eyes of 140 patients with NTG were included in this study. 41% (58 of 140 eyes) of eyes underwent NTG progression. Long term IOP variation calculated by conventional method was not a significant risk factor for NTG progression (hazard ratio[HR], 0.311; 95% confidence interval[CI], 0.056–1.717; P = 0.180). Long term IOP variation calculated by time adjusted method, however, was related to progression, with an HR of 5.260 (95% CI,1.191–23.232; P = 0.029). Conclusion: Although having the same IOP-related factors, if diurnal fluctuation is included, different results may be found on the relationship between IOP-related factors and NTG progression. Purpose: To compare the infusion pressure shown by a vitrectomy device with the actual intraocular pressure (IOP) observed during pars plana vitrectomy. Furthermore, we evaluated the effects of variable parameters on the actual IOP during vitrectomy surgery. Materials and methods: Porcine eyes were obtained within 24 h of slaughter. Actual IOP was measured by a digital manometer during vitrectomy using the vented gas forced infusion (VGFI) system, as well as the gravity system. We analyzed the actual IOP according to the groups divided by remnant volume of infusion fluid: (500 ml; control group, 250, 125, and 50 ml). Finally, actual IOP was determined after changing variable parameters such as cutting rate, vacuum pressure, and the VGFI setting. Results: Settings for a VGFI system and pressure supplied by a gravity system significantly correlated with actual IOP ( r = 0.99, p = 0.0001; r = 0.99, and p = 0.0001). Actual IOP declined with decreasing volume of infusion fluid. If the volume of infusion fluid was <125 ml, actual IOP decreased significantly compared with the control group and the difference in actual IOP reflected a significant difference in the VGFI setting of 30 mmHg. Cutting rate as well as VGFI setting and vacuum pressure affected actual IOP. Conclusions: Infusion pressure shown by the vitrectomy device was similar to actual IOP in porcine eyes. However, volume of infusion fluid and variable parameters could change the actual IOP during pars plana vitrectomy. Our results may help to optimize the ideal parameters such as infusion pressure, vacuum pressure, and cutting rate of vitrectomy systems used to treat vitreoretinal diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper presents a capillary-driven microfluidic device that uses surfactant-added poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to extract plasma from the blood without any external driving force. On the basis of the capillary phenomenon and filtration effect, plasma can be extracted through a planar crossflow filter using surfactant-added hydrophilic PDMS and SU-8-based microstructures. Because of the intrinsic hydrophobicity of PDMS, it is difficult to transport fluid in a PDMS microchannel using capillary action alone. In this study, we fabricated a microfluidic device with surfactant-added PDMS. The wetting property of PDMS was modified to be hydrophilic by mixing PDMS with a nonionic surfactant, Silwet L-77. As the hydrophilicity of PDMS increased, the filling rate of the fluid solution in the microchannel increased. The contact angles and passive capillary filling rates by surfactant concentration were compared, and the extraction of plasma was confirmed using a planar filter with various heights. Although the plasma extraction device exhibited limited throughput because of the use of a passive flow handling method, modifying the design and integrating sensors would make our device suitable for use in simple hematological tests of plasma. Objective: Arthritis can negatively affect physical and mental health, especially among middle-aged and older people. This study investigated the longitudinal association between changes in arthritis status and depressive symptoms among Korean adults aged ≥45 years.Methods: We analyzed data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging 2008-2018, using a generalized estimating equation model to investigate associations between arthritis status change and depressive symptoms, which were assessed using five categories according to measurements based on the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10).Results: Both men and women whose arthritis status changed to "worse" or remained "same" scored higher for depressive symptoms than those who reported "no symptoms of arthritis" (men, worse = β: 1.07, P ≤ .001, same = β: 0.25 P = .031; women, worse = β: 0.99, P ≤ .001, same = β: 0.13, P = .049). Conversely, men with a "better" arthritis status (β: -0.71, P ≤ .001) and women with a "recovered" arthritis status (β: -0.56, P = .031) scored lower for depressive symptoms than those who reported "no symptoms of arthritis."Conclusions: Arthritis status changes are associated with depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Koreans. We carried out the transient Raman spectroscopic studies to investigate the relaxation process of the excited-state intramolecular reverse proton transfer (r-ESIPT) in 1-hydroxyanthraquinone. To assign the observed excited-state vibrational modes, we carried out the mode analysis through the ab initio calculation with HF/4-31G(d) and CIS/4-31G(d) methods. The frequency changes of the proton-transfer-related Raman modes provide more quantitative feature on the r-ESIPT process in the excited triplet-state. The structural changes, dipole moments, and interaction energies for a series of C–H⋯X hydrogen bonded complexes involving F3CH as proton donor and NH3, OH2, NCH, and FH as proton acceptors have been studied using ab initio calculations including electron correlation effect for various basis sets. The NH3 shows a conventional hydrogen bond, while the other molecules show improper hydrogen bonds as evidenced by the C–H bond length shortening and the blue-shift of C–H stretching vibrational frequency. In the complex of F3CH⋯NCH, both C–H and N–C bonds are contracted, and their corresponding stretching vibrational frequencies are blue-shifted compared with monomers. The blue-shifted stretching vibration in the proton acceptor molecule has not been much addressed until now. Both conventional and improper hydrogen bonds are noted in the nonlinear complex of F3CH⋯FH, where FH molecule plays a dual role of proton acceptor and donor at the same time. The interaction energies are almost equivalent for HF and MP2 calculations, which does not support a recent proposition that the dispersive interaction is the origin of improper H-bonding. Recent studies suggest that sensory impairment is related to cognitive function at older ages. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the impact of sensory impairment on cognitive function in the Korean population. We used the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging data from 2006 to 2018. Cognitive function was measured by the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination scale. A score < 24 at the time of assessment was defined as cognitive impairment. Sensory impairment was assessed according to the self-reported levels of hearing or vision, and the development of sensory impairment was investigated using records of prior survey. We used the generalized estimating equation model to determine association between cognitive function and sensory impairment. A total of 4844 participants (age range: 47–95 years; mean age: 58) were included in the study. Compared to people without sensory impairment, people with a single sensory impairment of hearing or vision had a higher risk of cognitive impairment (odds ratio (OR) = 1.65 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.49–1.82]). People with dual sensory impairment had the greatest risk of cognitive impairment (OR = 3.23 [95% CI, 2.52–4.12]). A dual‐mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA) is realised in a 0.18 μm CMOS technology for the applications of 1 Gbit/s laser detection and ranging (LADAR) systems. The proposed dual‐mode CMOS feed‐forward TIA consists of a voltage‐mode inverter input stage with a feedback resistor, followed by a current‐mode common‐gate amplifier with a feed‐forward technique applied at the gate so as to achieve low noise, low power consumption, high gain and wide bandwidth characteristics simultaneously. The measured results demonstrate 76 dBΩ transimpedance gain, 720 MHz bandwidth for 0.5 pF photodiode capacitance, −26.3 dBm sensitivity for 10−12 bit error rate and 20.7 mW power dissipation from a single 1.8 V supply. Background: Studies investigating the association between migraine and dementia have reported inconsistent findings. This study aimed to evaluate whether patients with migraine have an increased risk of dementia compared to individuals without migraine. Methods: We obtained data from the 2002–2019 Korean National Health Insurance Health Screening Cohort. Non-migraine controls were selected using a 1:1 risk-set matching with a time-dependent propensity score. The main outcome was the development of all-cause dementia, and the secondary outcome was the development of each cause of dementia (Alzheimer's, vascular, mixed or other specified, and unspecified dementia). The incidence rate of dementia was calculated using Poisson regression, and the association between migraine and dementia was evaluated using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: Among 88,390 participants, 66.1% were female, and the mean baseline age was 55.3 ± 9.4 years. During the study period, dementia cases were identified in 4,800 of the 44,195 patients with migraine and 3,757 of the 44,915 matched controls. The incidence rate of dementia was 139.6 (95% confidence interval [CI], 135.7–143.5) and 107.7 (95% CI, 104.3–111.1) cases per 10,000 person-years in patients with migraine and matched controls, respectively. Patients with migraine had a 1.30 (hazard ratio [HR], 1.30; 95% CI, 1.25–1.35), 1.29 (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.23–1.35), 1.35 (HR, 1.35; 95% CI, 1.19–1.54), 1.36 (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.00–1.83), and 1.30 (HR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.17–1.45) times higher risk of developing all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's dementia, vascular dementia, mixed or other specified dementias, and unspecified dementia than their matched controls, respectively. Conclusion: Our results suggest that migraine is associated with an increased risk of subsequent dementia. Depression in older adults is a global socioeconomic burden. Identifying factors, such as physical activity or exercise that can help prevent depression is important. We aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in handgrip strength and the presence of depression using longitudinal, nationwide data of older Korean adults. Data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging were used in this study. A total of 6783 participants who had undergone a handgrip strength test and completed the short-form Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10-D) questionnaire from 2006 to 2018 were included. General estimating equations were used to assess the temporal effect of the changes in handgrip strength on depression. A decrease in handgrip strength was associated with high CESD-10-D scores (β = 0.1889 in men, β = 0.1552 in women). As a continuous variable, handgrip strength was negatively correlated with CESD-10-D scores(β = − 0.0166 in men, β = − 0.0196 in women). Changes in the handgrip strength were associated with depressive symptoms in our longitudinal study. Those who experienced a decrease in handgrip strength had severe depressive symptoms compared to those with unchanged or increased handgrip strength. Summary: In recent years, the aqueous phase reforming (APR) reaction using heterogeneous catalysts has been highlighted as one of possible approaches for converting nonedible biomass into hydrogen for fuel cell application. In this study, we have synthesized the rhenium (Re)‐doped Pt/SiO2 (Pt3Rex/SiO2) (based on weight; x = 1, 3, 5) catalysts for enhancing the APR of organic liquid C5 sugar xylose. Our study showed that the activity of bimetallic Pt‐Re catalysts toward the APR of xylose strongly depends on the level of Re dopant. In particular, the Pt3‐Re1/SiO2 catalyst exhibited the higher H2 selectivity compared to the catalysts having the higher amount of Re dopant (Pt3‐Re2/SiO2 and Pt3‐Re3/SiO2). Furthermore, the oxygen state of ReOx could be modified by changing reduction temperature. The measured hydrogen selectivity and reaction rate could be enhanced when the catalyst was reduced at higher temperature. Especially, the Pt3‐Re1/SiO2 catalyst reduced at 500°C under 10 vol% H2 flow exhibited high catalytic performances close to the theoretical values in the initial stage of the reaction, but its activity was gradually reduced by re‐oxidation of ReOx. From the various analysis results, we can figure out that the presence of metallic state Pt and Re in Pt3Re alloy phase and low oxidation state Re (Re3+) element is responsible for the improved H2 selectivity in Pt3‐Re1/SiO2 catalyst reduced at 500°C. In addition, the density functional theory calculation also predicted that the surface exposure of Pt and Re atoms (rather than oxidized ReOx) can boost the first dehydrogenation of xylose, which is in a good agreement with the experimental observation. Background: Social phobia shares symptoms with arrhythmias, such as palpitations and chest discomfort. However, it is unclear how social phobia is associated with the actual risk of arrhythmia. This study aimed to investigate whether social phobia is associated with the risk of arrhythmia using a nationally representative sample cohort. Methods: This retrospective cohort study assessed data from the 2002–2013 Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort. Using 1:3 propensity score matching for sex, age, income, and insurance status, 1514 patients with social phobia and 4542 control group patients were included in the study. Social phobia and arrhythmia were defined per the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision. Using cox proportional hazard regression, hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated to estimate the risk of arrhythmia in patients with social phobia. Results: There were statistically significant associations between social phobia history and elevated risks of arrhythmia. Patients with social phobia had a higher risk of arrhythmia after adjusting with covariates (HR = 1.78, 95%CI = 1.25–2.55). Among different types of arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation and flutter presented the highest risk (HR = 2.20, CI = 1.06–4.57) compared to paroxysmal tachycardia (HR = 1.07, CI = 0.39–2.91) and other cardiac arrhythmias (HR = 1.83, CI = 1.16–2.89). Conclusion: This study identified the association between social phobia and the risk of arrhythmia in a South Korean representative cohort. Background: Sleep problems increase the risk of premature illness and death. We evaluated the association between sedentary time and sleep quality among South Korean adults.Methods: The data of adults (aged ≥ 19 years) from the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey were analyzed. Sedentary time, which included hours spent sitting or lying down daily, was categorized into four standardized groups. Poor sleep quality was defined using the global cutoff point (> 5 points) of the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the association between sedentary time (≤ 3.9, 4.0-5.9, 6.0-7.9, and ≥ 8 hours /day) and sleep quality, by sex.Results: Of the 224,118 participants, 35,784/100,454 men (35.6%) and 58,271/123,664 women (47.1%) had poor sleep quality. Compared with ≤ 3.9 h/day, sedentary times 4.0-5.9, 6.0-7.9, and ≥ 8 h/day were associated with worse sleep quality among men (odds ratio [OR]: 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-1.16; OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.14-1.25; OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.25-1.34, respectively) and women (OR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.03-1.10; OR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.08-1.16; OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.18-1.26, respectively). In subgroup analyses of sleep quality, subjective sleep quality, latency, disturbance, use of sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction showed a strong dose-response relationship with increasing sedentary time in both sexes.Conclusions: Regardless of sex, the longer the sedentary time, the stronger the association with poor sleep quality. Background: Among the older adults, hearing impairment is a common problem and may contribute to dementia. Objective: Therefore, we aimed to examine the association between hearing impairment and the risk of dementia among older adults in South Korea. Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Senior Cohort from 2005 to 2019, we collected data of 44,728 patients. Hearing impairment was determined using the national disability registry. Propensity score matching (1:1) was performed to match patients with and without hearing impairment (case: 22,364, control: 22,364). A Cox proportional hazards regression model was built to analyze the association between hearing impairment and dementia. Results: Patients with hearing impairment had a higher risk of dementia than those without hearing impairment (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.23–1.34). Assessing the degree of disability, both severe (HR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.16–1.35) and mild conditions (HR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.23–1.35) had an increased risk of dementia, respectively. Conclusions: Older patients with hearing impairment exhibit an increased risk of dementia, thereby warranting a new approach to dementia care among these patients regardless of the degree of hearing impairment. Summary: NADPH oxidase (NOX) plays an important role in inflammatory response by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). The inhibition of NOX has been shown to induce anti‐inflammatory effects in a few experimental models. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), a NOX inhibitor, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced acute lung injury (ALI) in a rat model. Sprague‐Dawley rats were intraperitoneally administered by DPI (5 mg/kg) 30 minutes after intratracheal instillation of LPS (3 mg/kg). After 6 hours, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung tissue were collected. The NOX activity in lung tissue was significantly increased in LPS‐treated rats. It was significantly attenuated by DPI. DPI‐treated rats showed significant reduction in the intracellular ROS, the number of inflammatory cells, and cytokines (TNF‐α and IL‐6) in BALF compared with LPS‐treated rats. In lung tissue, DPI‐treated rats showed significantly decreased malondialdehyde content and increased activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase compared with LPS‐treated rats. Lung injury score, myeloperoxidase activity, and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression were significantly decreased in DPI‐treated rats compared with LPS‐treated animals. Western blotting analysis demonstrated that DPI significantly suppressed LPS‐induced activation of NF‐κB and ERK1/2 and SAPK/JNK in MAPK pathway. Our results suggest that DPI may have protective effects on LPS‐induced ALI thorough anti‐oxidative and anti‐inflammatory effects which may be due to inactivation of the NF‐κB, ERK1/2, and SAPK/JNK pathway. Transdermal drug delivery systems have been studied as an attractive alternative to conventional delivery routes. However, the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, acts as a primary barrier to drug delivery. A synergistic combination of microneedles (MNs) and low-frequency ultrasound (U) was used to enhance the penetration of siRNA and ovalbumin. The specific gene knockdown caused by siRNAs through the RNA interference pathway is more stable when delivered via the transdermal route. Ovalbumin, a representative adjuvant, causes a more efficient immune response in the skin because of the numerous immune cells in the skin. The synergistic transdermal delivery resulted in approximately 7 times and 15 times greater penetration of siRNA and ovalbumin respectively than in their respective negative controls, and histological analysis showed minimal invasion. Thus, as the synergistic transdermal delivery enhanced the penetration of biomacromolecules into the skin, this technique is expected to yield a promising technology for a transdermal drug delivery system. Recent advances in electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) have led to several promising results, including the large‐scale production of low‐carbon fuels. One of the next steps in this route is the generation of economically and scientifically valuable multicarbon (e.g., C4) chemicals. However, this process has rarely been reported to‐date and has generally suffered from a low production rate (jpartial ≤ 0.097 mA cm−2) and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ≤ 1%. This is largely due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts for the complicated and interconnected reaction pathway of C4 generation. Herein, CuxIr1–x alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are shown to convert CO2 into (CH3)3COH (t‐BuOH) with a jpartial of 0.207 mA cm–2 at a FE of 14.8%, which is the best performance toward C4 production demonstrated so far. Furthermore, this study proposes a probable mechanism of C4 formation based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The findings suggest that the C4 production is facilitated by the strong electronic interaction between Cu and Ir and the high oxophilicity of the Ir‐rich surface, which enhances the binding strength of oxygen‐bound intermediates. This work opens the potential of Ir‐based alloys for the CO2RR and highlights the production of C4 chemicals beyond the currently available C1–C3 products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Circadian misalignment caused by differences in sleep duration between weekends and weekdays may be associated with adolescent mental health and sleep quality may be able to compensate for this problem. This study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) ratio and sleep quality with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among South Korean adolescents. We used data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2015–2019 involving 270,619 adolescents. The weekend CUS ratio was calculated by dividing the average weekend sleep duration by the average weekday sleep duration (< 1.00, 1.00 ≤ CUS < 1.50, or ≥ 1.50). Subjective sleep quality was categorized as poor, moderate, or good. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. A weekend CUS ratio of < 1.00 and poor sleep quality was significantly associated with mental health. Absolutely short sleep duration (CUS < 1.00 and weekday sleep duration < 5 h) was most associated with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, adolescents with a CUS ratio of ≥ 1.50 showed increased odds of depressive symptoms despite having good sleep quality. Appropriate weekend CUS may benefit adolescents' mental health. When investigating the relationship between adolescents' sleep and mental health, a weekend CUS ratio should be considered in addition to sleep quality and duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Progress in neurological research has experienced bottlenecks owing to the limited availability of purified primary neurons. Since neuronal cells are non-proliferative, it is necessary to obtain purified neurons from animal models or human patients for experimental work. However, currently available methods for purifying primary neurons are time-consuming (taking approximately 1 week), and suffer from insufficient viability and purity. Here, we report a method for rapid enrichment of neurons from the mouse embryonic dorsal root ganglion (DRG), using a fully-automated continuous centrifugal microfluidics (CCM) based neuron purification disc (NPD). Non-neuronal cells were removed via negative depletion by combining density gradient centrifugation and immunomagnetic separation. The CCM-NPD platform enables effective isolation of intact neurons within 13 min, which is approximately 800 times faster than the conventional chemical purification method. Furthermore, the neurons purified using the CCM-NPD platform showed better neurite growth, along with higher viability (93.5%) and purity (97.0%) after 1 week of culture, compared to the chemical purification method. Therefore, the proposed automated and rapid system yields purified DRG neurons with high viability and purity, while avoiding the use of harsh chemicals. Although previous studies have demonstrated increased depression related to COVID-19, the reasons for this are not well-understood. We investigated the association of compliance with COVID-19 public health measures with depression. Data from the 2020 Korea Community Health Survey were analyzed. The main independent variable was compliance with rules based on three performance variables (social distancing, wearing a mask in indoor facilities, and outdoors). Depression was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 scores. Of 195,243 participants, 5,101 participants had depression. Bad and moderate performance scores for compliance were associated with depression (Bad score, men: adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.29–3.87; women: aOR = 2.42, 95% CI = 1.42–4.13; moderate score, men: aOR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.02–1.68; women: aOR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.07–1.53). In the subgroup analysis, among the quarantine rules, not wearing a mask indoors was the most prominently associated with depression. In participants with a high level of education, non-compliance with quarantine rules was significantly associated with depression. People who do not comply with public health measures are more likely to be depressed. The preparation and observance of scientific quarantine rules can help mental health in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and another infectious disease pandemic that may come. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the vascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus. Pericyte loss is an early characteristic phenomenon in DR. However, the mechanism by which pericyte apoptosis occurs in DR is not fully understood. We have focused on the increased STAT3 activation in diabetic retinas because STAT3 activation is associated with inflammation, and persistent chronic inflammation is closely related to retinal lesions. In this study, we demonstrated that STAT3 was activated by IFN-γ and IL-6 that highly expressed in diabetic retinas. We identified TNF-α as a potent inducer of pericyte apoptosis in diabetic retinas from the gene expression analysis and found that STAT3 activation in microglia increased TNF-α expression in the diabetic retinas. We also demonstrated that increased TNF-α expression in microglia caused pericyte apoptosis through downregulating AKT/p70S6 kinase signaling. Moreover, we took advantage of mice lacking STAT3 in microglia and demonstrated that STAT3 ablation in microglia reduced the pericyte apoptosis and TNF-α expression in the diabetic retinas. These results suggest that STAT3 activation in microglia plays an important role in pericyte apoptosis in the diabetic retinas through increased TNF-α expression and provide STAT3 activation in microglia as a potential therapeutic target for preventing pericyte loss in DR. • STAT3 activation in microglia increased TNF-α expression in the diabetic retinas. • TNF-α caused pericyte apoptosis through downregulating AKT/p70S6 kinase signaling. • STAT3 ablation in microglia reduced the pericyte apoptosis in the diabetic retinas. Circadian misalignment caused by differences in sleep duration between weekends and weekdays may be associated with adolescent mental health and sleep quality may be able to compensate for this problem. This study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) ratio and sleep quality with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation among South Korean adolescents. We used data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey 2015–2019 involving 270,619 adolescents. The weekend CUS ratio was calculated by dividing the average weekend sleep duration by the average weekday sleep duration (< 1.00, 1.00 ≤ CUS < 1.50, or ≥ 1.50). Subjective sleep quality was categorized as poor, moderate, or good. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. A weekend CUS ratio of < 1.00 and poor sleep quality was significantly associated with mental health. Absolutely short sleep duration (CUS < 1.00 and weekday sleep duration < 5 h) was most associated with depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, adolescents with a CUS ratio of ≥ 1.50 showed increased odds of depressive symptoms despite having good sleep quality. Appropriate weekend CUS may benefit adolescents' mental health. Oxidative stress plays important roles in inflammatory responses during acute lung injury (ALI). Recently, nanoconstruct (Nano)-based drug-delivery systems have shown promise in many models of inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) loaded in a biocompatible Nano using a rat model of ALI. We synthesized a Nano with a good NAC-releasing capacity using porous silica Nano, which was used to produce Nano/NAC complexes. For in vivo experiments, Sprague–Dawley rats were intraperitoneally administered NAC or Nano/NAC 30 min after intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide. After 6 h, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids and lung tissues were collected. The anti-oxidative effect of the Nano/NAC complex was confirmed by demonstrating reduced levels of reactive oxygen species after treatment with the Nano/NAC in vitro. In vivo experiments also showed that the Nano/NAC treatment may protect against LPS‐induced ALI thorough anti‐oxidative and anti‐inflammatory effects, which may be attributed to the inactivation of the NF‐κB and MAPK pathways. In addition, the effects of Nano/NAC treatment were shown to be superior to those of NAC alone. We suggest the therapeutic potential of Nano/NAC treatment as an anti‐inflammatory agent against ALI. The purpose of the present study was to define the differential diagnostic markers of benign and malignant bile duct strictures without demonstrable mass on ultrasonography (US) or computed tomography (CT) using aspects of clinical, laboratory and imaging findings. Between February 1995 and February 2001, 24 patients who underwent surgical resection for dilations of the bile duct (peripheral and hilar) without visible mass lesion on US or CT were included in our study. Hospital records, laboratory results, findings of imaging studies and pathological findings were reviewed retrospectively. For laboratory results, levels of alkaline phosphatase (benign 163.9 ± 145.1 vs malignant 407.25 ± 481.7; p < 0.05) and CA 19–9 (benign 25.0 ± 41.1 vs malignant 614.6 ± 818.5; p < 0.05) levels were significantly elevated in the malignant group compared with that of the benign group. Findings such as thickening of the bile duct wall ≥ 5 mm ( P < 0.05) on radiological examination, significant regional lymph node enlargement (> 1 cm, p = 0.01) on CT scan and abrupt cut-off ( P < 0.01), and separation of bile ducts ( P < 0.05) on cholangiogram were differential diagnostic markers between the two groups. Preoperative laboratory data such as alkaline phosphatase and CA 19–9, and imaging findings such as significant wall thickening and regional lymph node enlargement on CT, abrupt cut-off and separation of bile duct on cholangiogram are useful differential diagnostic markers for benign and malignant bile duct strictures without demonstrable mass on US or CT. When breast cancer is surgically removed, a rim of normal tissue surrounding the tumor is also removed. This rim of normal tissue is called a margin and is studied by a pathologist to determine whether or not all tumor was removed. The pathologist achieves this by cutting the surgically removed tissue into thin slices and observing each slice under a microscope. This process is time‐consuming. Here, we investigate the feasibility of using a portable carbon nanotube (CNT)‐based X‐ray system for in situ detection of the presence of tumor cells in the surgical margin. Using the proposed technique, we successfully obtain X‐ray images, which clearly show cancer masses and microcalcifications. Among the Pt group metals, Pd has been considered the most efficient for application in electrocatalysts as an alternative to Pt. Despite the comparable electrochemical activities of Pd and Pd‐metal alloys, they are vulnerable to liquid acidic electrolytes, leading to degradation of catalytic activity. Pd–Ni alloys have been used to enhance catalytic activity because the electronic structure of Pd can be easily changed by adding Ni. In other studies, N atoms have been introduced for more stable M–Ni catalysts by inducing the formation of Ni4N species; however, the structural analysis and the role of nitrogen have not been fully understood yet. Herein, the Pd–Ni alloy nitride with a unique crystal structure shows a promising catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The nitride PdNi nanoparticles have a novel monolithic antiperovskite structure of chemical formula (PdxNi1−x)NNi3. The unique antiperovskite crystal (PdxNi1−x)NNi3 possesses superior ORR activity and stability, originating from the downshifted d‐band center of the monolayer Pd/antiperovskite surface and the lower formation energy of the antiperovskite core nanocrystal. Consequently, (PdxNi1−x)NNi3, as a Pt‐free Pd‐based electrocatalyst, overcomes the stability issue of Pd under acidic conditions by achieving 99‐times higher mass activity than commercial Pd/C, as shown by the durability test. We report the enhancement of carbon nanotube (CNT) field emitters by growing them directly on stripe-patterned alloy substrates. For a gate voltage of 1300 V, CNT field emitters grown on full and stripe-patterned alloy substrates achieved respective emission currents of 0.22 and 2.32 mA, corresponding to tenfold performance enhancement. Performance enhancement is attributed to the reduced screening effect (as a result of the spacing between strips) during field emission and a damage-free patterning process. To verify the ability of the stripe-patterned CNT field emitters to generate X-rays, we designed and assembled an electron gun through brazing. With the open type X-ray system, an X-ray image of human teeth was successfully obtained, verifying the potential of the stipe-patterned CNT emitters in X-ray applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The smartphone usage time was associated with abnormal social jetlag in adolescents. • This association gradually increased as the smartphone usage time increased. • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly strengthened this relationship. • The association was prominent in female adolescents. This study aimed to use social jetlag to determine how smartphone overuse by adolescents before and after the COVID-19 pandemic might be associated with their circadian rhythm. We used 2017 and 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior web-based Survey data and conducted a survey analysis on 100,976 adolescents. The dependent variable was abnormal social jetlag. Based on the times recorded by the survey, we calculated the weekday midpoint and weekend sleep time. The main independent variable was smartphone usage time (<2h/day, 2–3.9 h/day, 4–5.9 h/day, and ≥ 6 h/day). Multiple logistic regression and relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) were performed. Abnormal social jetlag was most prevalent in male and female adolescents who used smartphones ≥ 6 h/day (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.60, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 2.47–2.74). The longer the smartphone usage time, the higher the association with abnormal social jetlag. This association was more prominent in female adolescents. The additive interaction between longer smartphone usage time and post-COVID-19 year was statistically significant (total: RERI = 0.92, 95 % CI = 0.90–0.95; males: RERI = 0.83, 95 % CI = 0.80–0.87; females: RERI = 1.13, 95 % CI = 1.08–1.18). Our results clearly indicated that increased smartphone usage time tended to result in greater social jetlag, an association that was more pronounced in female. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly strengthened this relationship. Abstract: REE slag was obtained from reduction smelting of magnetite ore containing monazite. Using the REE slag, the leaching kinetics of lanthanum from the slag was studied under the conditions of slurry density of 1.5g slag per L of 0.3M H2SO4, agitation of 750rpm and temperature ranging from 30 to 80°C. After five hours of leaching, the lanthanum was completely leached from the slag. Leaching kinetics can be described by the shrinking core model for spherical particles of unchanging size and leaching was found to occur in two stages. The initial leaching rate was controlled by chemical reaction. Using the Arrhenius equation, the apparent activation energy of the chemical reaction rate controlling step was determined to be 10.0kJmol−1. As leaching of the lanthanum increased, the reaction rate was controlled by diffusion through an ash layer. The apparent activation energy of the second stage was determined to be 24.8kJmol−1. The leaching rate and extent of leaching of lanthanum from the slag increased with an increase in leaching temperature. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: It is unclear whether the presence of minimal lung function impairment is an independent risk factor for the development of lung cancer in general populations. Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study using nationally representative data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Results: Of 20,553 participants, 169 were diagnosed with lung cancer during follow-up (median, 6.5 years). Participants with obstructive lung function impairment had increased risk of lung cancer (aHR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.729–3.629) compared with those with normal lung function. The lower was the quartile or decile of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) or the FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio, the significantly higher was the incidence rate of lung cancer (p for trend < 0.0001). With FEV1 values in the lowest quartile (Q4), the incidence of lung cancer was significantly increased regardless of FVC (FEV1 Q4 and FVC values in the higher three quartiles Q1–3: aHR 1.754; 95% CI 1.084–2.847, FEV1 Q4 and FVC Q4: aHR 1.889; 95% CI 1.331–2.681).
