Mixed thorium/uranium dioxide, (Th,U)O2, is under consideration for advanced nuclear fuel applications. Investigating the point defect structure and energy in this oxide is important for predicting its behavior as fuel. In this work, we use first-principles calculations based on the generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+Hubbard U approach to investigate the internal energy and entropy of the formation of point defects in Th1−xUxO2 at various compositions below x ≤ 0.5. Point defects including O vacancies, O interstitials, Th vacancies, Th interstitials, U vacancies, and U interstitials have all been considered with their charges ranging from neutral to the maximum nominal values. The observed trends have been explained in terms of electronic density of states. The valence band maxima of crystals that contain defects play a crucial role and exhibit variations depending on the U content and the applied charge. The temperature dependence of internal energy and entropy of formation of defects have also been examined. The internal energy of formation of defects was found to exhibit slowly varying or constant values with respect to changes in the U content, except at low values of x and low temperatures. The entropy of formation of defects was observed to decrease with increasing U content. It was additionally observed that the entropy of formation of vacancies increases with temperature, while that of interstitials decreases. This investigation further revealed that at 0 K, the cation vacancies and anion interstitials become increasingly favorable with increasing U content, while cation interstitials and anion vacancies become less favorable. Images drawn in the air will be effective for the projection of a person or an avatar in telecommunication and man–machine communication. Direct drawing with femtosecond laser pulses can generate images anywhere without any special materials; therefore, there are fewer restrictions on image display location. The biggest challenge in research and development is to increase the display size. To increase the display size, it is necessary to make the objective lens have a longer focal length (lower numerical aperture), but increasing the focal length is accompanied by a decrease in excitation efficiency due to an increase in the focused size. Therefore, by measuring the luminous intensity and luminous size using lenses with several focal lengths, the possibility of realizing a display with a centimeter‐sized (fist‐sized) volume using a lens with a focal length of 100 mm was found. By reconstructing the optical system of the aerial volumetric display using a lens with a focal length of 100 mm, a drawing range of 68 mm on average in the lateral direction and 42 mm in the axial direction was achieved. Background: Prophylactic chemoradiation therapy (CRT) using 40–41.4 Gy post-endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for clinical T1N0M0 esophageal cancer reportedly yields favorable outcomes. However, it cannot completely prevent locoregional lymph node (LN) metastases. We retrospectively analyzed outcomes and adverse events associated with our dose-escalated treatment regimen (definitive-dose radiotherapy [RT] of 50–61.2 Gy, with/without chemotherapy) for these patients, and predictors of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Methods: Between 2006 and 2018, 44 consecutive patients (42 men and 2 women; median age, 70 years) who underwent definitive-dose RT post-ESD and had a pathological depth of the muscularis mucosa with lymphovascular invasion (LVI) or the upper-middle submucosal third at our institution were included. We excluded patients who could not obtain a margin-free resection by ESD. If feasible, systemic chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil plus high- or low-dose cisplatin or nedaplatin was administered concurrently. Results: Five-year PFS, OS, and disease-specific survival rates were 78.8%, 88.4%, and 97.7%, respectively. Six metachronous esophagus (14%), two locoregional LN within the irradiated area with a prophylactic dose of 41.4 Gy (5%), and two locoregional LN plus liver (5%) recurrences occurred. No LN recurrence occurred within the definitive dose of ≥ 50 Gy in the irradiated area. Metachronous esophageal recurrence involved areas receiving ≥ 50 Gy. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that age was an independent prognostic factor for both PFS and OS. Conclusions: Definitive-dose RT/CRT post-ESD could provide favorable locoregional LN control and PFS/OS regardless of patient characteristics, including pathological findings and chemotherapy regimen/course, except for age. These results need to be interpreted carefully given several limitations, therefore, definitive-dose RT/CRT should be conducted with caution in clinical practice until high-quality prospective clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness and safety. There is a variety of electrophiles in the environment. In addition, there are precursor chemicals that undergo metabolic activation by enzymes and conversion to electrophiles in the body. Although electrophiles covalently bind to protein nucleophiles, they also form adducts associated with adaptive or toxic responses. Low molecular weight compounds containing sulfur are capable of blocking such adduct formation by capturing the electrophiles. In this review, we present our findings on the capture and inactivation of electrophiles by: (i) intracellular glutathione, (ii) reactive sulfur species, and (iii) extracellular cysteine (formed during the production of sulfur adducts). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess whether an excessively increased medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) resulted in the deterioration of long-term clinical outcomes after opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: A total of 69 OA knees that underwent OWHTO, with follow-up for a minimum of 10 years, were retrospectively reviewed. The knee and function scores of the Knee Society Score were assessed separately, and cases with a score decline greater than or equal to the minimal clinically important difference from postoperative 1 to 10 years were defined as showing clinical deterioration. Cartilage status was assessed with arthroscopy at the time of osteotomy (first-look) and plate removal (second-look) according to the International Cartilage Repair Society grading system. The outcomes were compared between knees with MPTA ≤ 95° (n = 27) and MPTA > 95° (n = 42). Results: The mean knee and function scores at postoperative 10 years in MPTA ≤ 95° knees (86.8 ± 9.6 and 90.4 ± 13.1) were not significantly different from those in MPTA > 95° knees (85.8 ± 11.5 and 86.9 ± 14.2). The rate of clinical deterioration in knee and function scores was not significantly different between MPTA ≤ 95° knees (26% and 26%) and MPTA > 95° knees (21% and 36%). No significant differences were found between the MPTA ≤ 95° and MPTA > 95° groups in the cartilage status of all compartments at both first-look and second-look (postoperative 21 months) arthroscopies. We investigated the relation between high-frequency seismic signals and eruption size and duration using seismic data of eruption tremor and explosion events generated during sub-Plinian and Vulcanian eruptions, respectively, at various volcanoes. We estimated source amplitude functions from seismic envelope seismograms in the 5–10 Hz band, in which S waves are assumed to radiate isotropically. Because seismic data associated with explosive eruptions can be contaminated by infrasound signals, we confirmed that contamination did not significantly affect the source amplitude functions quantified from our analysed waveforms. We approximated the source amplitude functions of eruption tremor and explosion events by quadrilateral and triangular shapes. For eruption tremor, the durations of the source amplitude functions increased with decreasing slope of the initial phase, that is between onset and maximum amplitude. For explosion events, both the maximum and cumulative amplitudes of the source amplitude functions increased with increasing slope of the initial phase, but the overall durations clustered around a typical value. Moreover, the initial phase durations of eruption tremor were longer than those of explosion events. Based on eruption models proposed by previous studies, Vulcanian and sub-Plinian eruptions have been thought to be triggered by accumulation of magma at a shallow part in a conduit and mixing of cool mushy magma with hot fresh magma in a reservoir, respectively. The above differences between the source amplitude functions of eruption tremor and explosion events can be explained by the distinct eruption triggering processes of sub-Plinian and Vulcanian eruptions. Our results suggest that source amplitude functions are useful for investigating eruption processes and estimating eruption sizes and durations for seismic eruption monitoring. Scanning magnetic microscopes enable high-sensitivity mapping of magnetic fields in thin geological sections, facilitating submillimeter- to submicrometer-scale studies of paleomagnetism and rock magnetism. Magnetic fields of geological samples have been mapped using various sensors, including Hall-effect devices, magneto-impedance devices, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), quantum diamond devices, and tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) devices. This study proposes magnetic microscopy using high-sensitivity room-temperature TMR sensors developed for biomagnetic applications. The goal was to create high-performance magnetic microscopes that do not require labor-intensive techniques, such as cryogenic technology. An XYZ stage developed for a scanning SQUID microscope (SSM) was used to demonstrate and evaluate magnetic microscopy with TMR sensors. The original TMR sensors developed for biomagnetic sensing composed of serially connected TMR elements with a total length of 2684 μm were shortened to 1073 μm (Sensor #1) and 357 μm length (Sensor #2). Background measurements at 50 Hz show magnetic field sensitivities better than 200 nT/√Hz and 600 nT/√Hz at 1 Hz for Sensor #1 and Sensor #2, respectively. By averaging 10 points of the original 50 Hz sampling, magnetic field sensitivities are better than 30 nT/√Hz and 90 nT/√Hz at 1 Hz for Sensor #1 and Sensor #2, respectively. To demonstrate TMR sensors as magnetic microscopes, a vertically magnetized Hawaii basalt thin section was measured and compared with a SQUID-acquired magnetic field map. Magnetic scanning images obtained with TMR sensors on a 0.1-mm grid were compared with those of SSM after adjusting the lift-off by upward continuation and integrated along the length of the sensors. The results demonstrated that magnetic images for 1073-μm-long (357 μm-long) TMR sensors aligned along the y-axis and x-axis are consistent with those after upward continuation to 0.3 mm (0.25 mm) and 0.4 mm (0.25 mm) and convolution by 1 × 10 (1 × 4) and 10 × 1 (4 × 1) matrix, respectively. Overall, the high-sensitivity TMR sensors exhibited promising performance. Further improvements can be made by optimizing the sensors, preamplifiers, and measurement systems for magnetic microscopy to achieve an optimum target resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metabolic surgery, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), may improve hypertension (HTN) complicated by severe obesity; however, insufficient deliberation exists regarding the therapeutic effect of post-metabolic surgery on HTN. This study aimed to analyze the factors correlated with HTN remission and recurrence post-LSG in patients who have severe obesity, and to create a classification system to predict HTN remission and recurrence. Of the 102 patients who underwent LSG at Iwate Medical University Hospital between 2008 and 2020, 62 were enrolled in this study. Factors correlated with HTN remission and recurrence post-LSG were retrospectively analyzed. The HTN remission rate 12-months post-LSG was 40.3%. The remission cohort had a lower number of preoperative antihypertensive drugs (ADs) than that of the non-remission cohort (one and two tablets, respectively; p< 0.001). Additionally, the remission cohort had a statistically significantly smaller visceral fat area (VFA) than that of the non-remission cohort, at all time points. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the number of preoperative ADs and VFA were independent predictors of remission. The HTN recurrence rate 36-months post-LSG was 36.0%. In the recurrence cohort, the number of preoperative ADs and VFA were higher and larger than that in the non-recurrence cohort, respectively. Stratification, based on the number of preoperative ADs and VFA, revealed that the HTN remission and recurrence rates in the sub-cohort with a small number of preoperative ADs and small VFA (100% and 16.7%, respectively) were better than those in the sub-cohort with a large number of preoperative ADs and large VFA (5.3% and 100%, respectively). In Japanese patients with severe obesity, the number of preoperative ADs and VFA were correlated with HTN remission and recurrence post-LSG. Under accelerating threats from climate‐change impacts, marine protected areas (MPAs) have been proposed as climate‐adaptation tools to enhance the resilience of marine ecosystems. Yet, debate persists as to whether and how MPAs may promote resilience to climate shocks. Here, we use 38 years of satellite‐derived kelp cover to empirically test whether a network of 58 temperate coastal MPAs in Central and Southern California enhances the resistance of kelp forest ecosystems to, and their recovery from, the unprecedented 2014–2016 marine heatwave regime that occurred in the region. We also leverage a 22‐year time series of subtidal community surveys to mechanistically understand whether trophic cascades explain emergent patterns in kelp forest resilience within MPAs. We find that fully protected MPAs significantly enhance kelp forests' resistance to and recovery from marine heatwaves in Southern California, but not in Central California. Differences in regional responses to the heatwaves are partly explained by three‐level trophic interactions comprising kelp, urchins, and predators of urchins. Urchin densities in Southern California MPAs are lower within fully protected MPAs during and after the heatwave, while the abundances of their main predators—lobster and sheephead—are higher. In Central California, a region without lobster or sheephead, there is no significant difference in urchin or kelp densities within MPAs as the current urchin predator, the sea otter, is protected statewide. Our analyses show that fully protected MPAs can be effective climate‐adaptation tools, but their ability to enhance resilience to extreme climate events depends upon region‐specific environmental and trophic interactions. As nations progress to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030, scientists and managers should consider whether protection will increase resilience to climate‐change impacts given their local ecological contexts, and what additional measures may be needed. During the 2023–2024 winter, 11 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks caused by clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 and H5N6 HPAI viruses were confirmed in Japanese domestic poultry among 10 prefectures (n = 10 and 1, respectively). In this study, we aimed to genetically and pathologically characterize these viruses. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that H5N1 viruses were classified into the G2d-0 genotype, whereas the H5N6 virus was a novel genotype in Japan, designated as G2c-12. The G2c-12 virus shared PB2, PB1, PA, HA, and M genes with previous G2c viruses, but had NP and NS genes originating from avian influenza viruses in wild birds abroad. The N6 NA gene was derived from an H5N6 HPAI virus that was different from the viruses responsible for the outbreaks in Japan in 2016–2017 and 2017–2018. Experimental infections in chickens infected with H5N1(G2d-0) and H5N6(G2c-12) HPAI viruses showed no significant differences in the 50% chicken lethal dose, mean death time, or virus shedding from the trachea and cloaca, or in the histopathological findings. Different genotypes of the viruses worldwide, their introduction into the country, and their stable lethality in chickens may have triggered the four consecutive seasons of HPAI outbreaks in Japan. Background: Proximal renal tubular dysfunction occurs during diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in type 1 diabetes. However, only a few studies have reported on the multiple proximal renal tubular functions simultaneously. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, distal renal tubular function has not yet been investigated. Methods: Patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus were classified into those with DKA and those without DKA, and their proximal and distal renal tubular functions were investigated. The diagnostic criteria for DKA were blood glucose > 200 mg/dL, blood pH < 7.3 or HCO3– < 15 mEq/L, and urine ketone body positivity. Results: Six patients with DKA and five patients without DKA were included. In patients with DKA, urinary β2-microglobulin levels were significantly higher, while blood pH, HCO3–, and tubular reabsorption of phosphorus were significantly lower than in those without DKA. There were no significant differences in blood glucose, HbA1c, serum phosphorus, urinary N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, and urinary amino acid excretion between patients with and without DKA. Elevated NH3 levels and impaired urinary acidification were not observed in patients with and without DKA. Conclusions: In patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus complicated with DKA, multiple proximal renal tubular dysfunctions occur simultaneously, suggesting transient Fanconi syndrome. Distal renal tubular acidosis was unlikely. The diagnostic criteria for DKA are appropriate also in the view of proximal renal tubular dysfunction and are considered suggestive of pathophysiological factors that may cause proximal renal tubular dysfunction. Background: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) in the foramen magnum region (FMR) are rare entity of dAVFs. There is no established treatment for FMR-dAVFs owing to their rarity and anatomical complexity. Herein, we report cases of high-flow dAVFs located at the posteromedial part of the FMR that were successfully treated by surgical interruption. Methods: We demonstrated the surgical procedures for the interruption of high-flow FMR-dAVF with representative images and videos. In both cases, endovascular transarterial embolization was performed prior to surgical interruption. The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(C8Br4O4)(C3H4N2)2(H2O)2]n or [Co(Br4bdc)(im)2(H2O)2]n, comprises half of CoII ion, tetra­bromo­benzene­dicarboxylate (Br4bdc2−), imidazole (im) and a water mol­ecule. The CoII ion exhibits a six-coordinated octa­hedral geometry with two oxygen atoms of the Br4bdc2− ligand, two oxygen atoms of the water mol­ecules, and two nitro­gen atoms of the im ligands. The carboxyl­ate group is nearly perpendicular to the benzene ring and shows monodentate coordination to the CoII ion. The CoII ions are bridged by the Br4bdc2− ligand, forming a one-dimensional chain. The carboxyl­ate group acts as an inter­molecular hydrogen-bond acceptor toward the im ligand and a coordinated water mol­ecule. The chains are connected by inter­chain N—H⋯O(carboxyl­ate) and O—H(water)⋯O(carboxyl­ate) hydrogen-bonding inter­actions and are not arranged in parallel but cross each other via inter­chain hydrogen bonding and π–π inter­actions, yielding a three-dimensional network. The strain relaxation, surface morphology, and reflectivity of AlGaN‐distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) grown via metal–organic chemical vapor deposition on AlN/Al2O3 templates are investigated. Strain relaxation begins in a 10‐period Al0.50Ga0.50N (27 nm)/Al0.75Ga0.25N (29 nm) DBR, and the degree of strain relaxation (DSR) increases with the number of DBR periods. The 30‐period DBR exhibits a peak reflectivity of 0.82 at 279 nm, with a stopband of 12 nm. The DSR of n‐Al0.62Ga0.38N on the 30‐period DBR increases from 70% to 100% as the n‐Al0.62Ga0.38N thickness increases from 0.4 to 2.5 μm. Although the surface of a DBR comprises numerous spiral hillocks, n‐Al0.62Ga0.38N grown on an AlGaN DBR exhibits a step‐flow growth. A DSR of 100% with threading screw dislocations of 2.0 × 108 cm−2 and threading edge dislocations of 1.2 × 109 cm−2 is obtained for a 2.5 μm‐thick n‐Al0.62Ga0.38N on a 30‐period AlGaN DBR. This paper proposes a multi‐objective evolutionary algorithm based on bilayered decomposition (MOEA/BLD) for solving constrained multi‐objective optimization problems. MOEA/D is an effective method for solving unconstrained multi‐objective optimization problems. It decomposes the objective space using weight vectors and simultaneously searches for solutions for the subproblems. However, real‐world applications impose many constraints, and these constraints must be handled appropriately when searching for good feasible solutions. The proposed MOEA/BLD treats such constraints as an additional objective function. Furthermore, in addition to the conventional weight vector, an augmented weight vector is introduced that decomposes the objective space and constraint violation space hierarchically. In the first stage, the objective space is decomposed by conventional weight vectors. In the next stage, the bi‐objective space consisting of the scalarizing function and constraint violation is decomposed by augmented weight vectors. The augmented weights are adjusted so that they decrease linearly in the search process as the search gradually moves from infeasible regions to feasible regions. The proposed algorithm is compared to several state‐of‐the‐art constrained MOEA/Ds using multi‐ and many‐objective problems. Zigzag-shaped [6]phenacene isomers with fused thiophene rings, fulmineno[2,1-b:10,9-b′]dithiophene (FuDT-α) and fulmineno[1,2-b:9,10-b′]dithiophene (FuDT-β), were syntheized and their p-type organic semicondutor properties were studied. Small effective masses of holes were estimated from the crystal structures of both isomers, which was particularly demonstrated by the hole mobility of 10.5 cm2 V−1 s−1 for FuDT-α single crystals. Background/Objective: It is not uncommon for elderly patients to experience difficulties with feeding and swallowing. In the simple suspension method, tablets are dissolved and suspended in warm water without prior crushing or decapsulation, and then administered via a tube. Despite the prevalence of this method, the pharmacokinetics of suspended tablet dosage forms remain poorly understood. Methods: Verapamil was employed in dissolution tests following both the simple suspension and crushing methods. A pharmacokinetics study was conducted on healthy adult males. Results: The resultant dissolution profiles from the two methods exhibited notable dissimilarities. Drug release from the crushed product commenced earlier than that from the simple suspension and intact tablet. Furthermore, the area under the curve for verapamil during the initial 24 h period was 1.7 and 1.3 times greater in the crushed and simple suspension groups, respectively, than in the tablet group. Conclusions: The crushing and simple suspension methods are safe techniques for administering medications to patients with dysphagia, thereby preventing aspiration. Nevertheless, the processing of medications may result in an increased frequency of adverse effects. It is recommended that the processing of medicines prior to administration be avoided. Background: This study aimed to investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in cruciate ligaments from patients with osteoarthritis (OA). It was hypothesized that the expression level of VEGF is associated with the extent of degeneration of the cruciate ligaments. Methods: Remnants of anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) from patients with acute ACL injury due to trauma, and ACLs and posterior cruciate ligaments (PCLs) from patients with primary OA were assessed histologically. Samples were immunohistochemically stained with VEGF and tenomodulin, and immunopositive cells were quantitatively assessed by the histological grades of ligament degeneration. Results: Histological analysis showed significant degeneration of the ACLs from OA patients compared with trauma patients, with increased expression of VEGF correlating with higher grades of degeneration. Conversely, tenomodulin expression was lower in more degenerated cruciate ligaments. The percentage of VEGF-positive cells was correlated inversely with that of tenomodulin-positive cells. Neural networks play a central role in the construction of learning models for artificial intelligence and machine learning. This is because neural networks are highly flexible and can approximate a wide variety of maps with high accuracy. The flexibility of neural networks is theoretically guaranteed by using universal approximation theorems. When the input and output spaces have finite dimensions, the universal approximation property of neural networks has been intensively investigated under various conditions of width, depth, and activation functions. However, these finite-dimensional results cannot be directly applied to settings in which an input or output space has infinite dimensions, such as functional data analysis and neural processes. Recent advances in measurement technologies, particularly single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), have revolutionized our ability to acquire large amounts of omics-level data on cellular states. As measurement techniques evolve, there has been an increasing need for data analysis methodologies, especially those focused on cell-type identification and inference of gene regulatory networks (GRNs). We have developed a new method named BootCellNet, which employs smoothing and resampling to infer GRNs. Using the inferred GRNs, BootCellNet further infers the minimum dominating set (MDS), a set of genes that determines the dynamics of the entire network. We have demonstrated that BootCellNet robustly infers GRNs and their MDSs from scRNA-seq data and facilitates unsupervised identification of cell clusters using scRNA-seq datasets of peripheral blood mononuclear cells and hematopoiesis. It has also identified COVID-19 patient-specific cells and their potential regulatory transcription factors. BootCellNet not only identifies cell types in an unsupervised and explainable way but also provides insights into the characteristics of identified cell types through the inference of GRNs and MDS. Author summary: Single-cell omics technologies, such as single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq), are instrumental in identifying novel cell subsets that are involved in various biological processes and diseases. These technologies, however, require further development in data analysis, especially in areas focused on cell-type identification and inference of interactions between genes. The problem of cell-type identification essentially involves clustering, which necessitates a balance between distinguishing different cell states and grouping similar ones together. Current clustering methods still suffer from uncertainty in determining the appropriate number of clusters and in explaining why some cells are clustered together but others are separated. The inference of interactions between genes, gene regulatory network (GRN), remains challenging due to the noisy nature of scRNA-seq. We have developed BootCellNet, a method that infers GRNs and a set of genes dominating the network dynamics and utilizes the set to cluster cells and identify cell types. The method addresses challenges in GRN identification and clustering methods simultaneously and will facilitate the generation of the working hypotheses from a large amount of scRNA-seq data. Background: Postoperative change of the joint line convergence angle (JLCA) is known to be a factor affecting correction error in opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO). The purpose of this study was to assess whether preoperative planning that considers change of the JLCA can achieve accurate correction in the standing position after OWHTO. Methods: OWHTO was performed for 109 knees with osteoarthritis of the knee. The amount of angular correction was planned aiming to achieve mechanical valgus of 5° in 55 knees (conventional planning), and it was adjusted in 54 knees (adjusted planning) according to the preoperative JLCA as follows: not changed with JLCA ≤ 3°; decreased 1° with JLCA 4–6°; decreased 2° with JLCA 7–8°; and decreased 3° with JLCA ≥ 9°. The hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle, JLCA, and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were measured on standing long-leg radiographs. Correction error ≤ 2º was defined as the acceptable range, and correction error > 2º was defined as an outlier. Results: The conventional planning group had a significantly greater postoperative HKA angle than the adjusted planning group (6.1º and 4.9º, respectively). The mean JLCA decreased from 4.8º to 2.6º in the conventional planning group and from 4.6º to 2.7º in the adjusted planning group. The conventional planning group had significantly greater postoperative MPTA than the adjusted planning group (96.2º and 94.7º, respectively). The rate of outliers with correction error > 2º was significantly lower in the adjusted planning group (9%) than in the conventional planning group (24%). The rate of the MPTA > 95º was significantly lower in the adjusted planning group (30%) than in the conventional planning group (69%). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that preoperative planning with adjustment of the correction angle according to the preoperative JLCA improved correction accuracy in the standing position after OWHTO. Crop models have suggested high sensitivity of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] to day length and the resultant extension of the growth period as a concept to overcome yield loss due to climate warming. However, experimental validation of this concept is incomplete. The E3 and E4 loci encode phytochrome A isoforms and enhance sensitivity to day length. Our previous study showed that the dominant E4 allele can mitigate yield loss due to warming. In this study, we similarly tested the hypothesis that the dominant E3 allele can reduce yield loss caused by warming. One of the leading Japanese cultivars Enrei (e3/E4) and near‐isogenic lines (NIL‐e3e4, NIL‐E3e4, and NIL‐E3E4) in the Enrei genetic background were grown at near ambient temperature or either 2.0°C or 4.7°C above ambient temperature in temperature‐gradient chambers (TGCs) in a cool region in Japan. The number of days from sowing to beginning of flowering (R1) decreased with increasing temperature, regardless of genotype. However, increasing temperature extended the period from R1 to beginning of pod filling (R3) and increased pod number per plant and seed yield per plant in all genotypes except NIL‐e3e4. Combined data from the TGC experiment and from field trials across three different latitudes showed that the decreased developmental rate during the R1–R3 period can be attributed to longer days, rather than by supra‐optimal temperatures. We conclude that E3, in addition to E4, could potentially increase seed yield in cool regions under future warming. The viral infectivity factor (Vif) of human immunodeficiency virus 1 forms a complex with host proteins, designated as Vif-CBFβ-ELOB-ELOC-CUL5 (VβBCC), initiating the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of the human antiviral protein APOBEC3G (A3G), thereby negating its antiviral function. Whilst recent cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) studies have implicated RNA molecules in the Vif-A3G interaction that leads to A3G ubiquitination, our findings indicated that the VβBCC complex can also directly impede A3G-mediated DNA deamination, bypassing the proteasomal degradation pathway. Employing the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by EXponential enrichment (SELEX) method, we have identified RNA aptamers with high affinity for the VβBCC complex. These aptamers not only bind to the VβBCC complex but also reinstate A3G's DNA deamination activity by inhibiting the complex's function. Moreover, we delineated the sequences and secondary structures of these aptamers, providing insights into the mechanistic aspects of A3G inhibition by the VβBCC complex. Background: Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) modulates the tumor immune microenvironment of multiple cancer types, including esophageal cancer, which potentially induces both immunogenicity and immunosuppression by upregulating the presentation of tumor-specific antigens and immune checkpoint molecules in tumors, respectively. The prognostic effects of immune modification by CRT in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain controversial because of the lack of detailed immunological analyses using paired clinical specimens before and after CRT. We aimed to clarify the immunological changes in the tumor microenvironment caused by CRT and elucidate the predictive importance of clinical response and prognosis and the rationale for the necessity of subsequent programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor treatment. Methods: In this study, we performed a comprehensive immunological analysis of paired biopsy specimens using multiplex immunohistochemistry before and after CRT in patients with unresectable locally advanced ESCC. Results: CRT significantly increased the intra-tumoral infiltration and PD-1 expression of CD8+ T cells and conventional CD4+ T cells but decreased those of regulatory T cells and the accumulation of tumor-associated macrophages. Multivariate analysis of tumor-infiltrating T-cell phenotypes revealed that the density of PD-1+CD8+ T cells in the tumor after CRT could predict a confirmed complete response and favorable survival. Conclusions: This study showed that CRT improved the immunological characteristics of unresectable locally advanced ESCC and identified the density of PD-1+CD8+ T cells as a predictive factor for prognosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between chondrogenic differentiation and Wnt signal expression in the degenerative process of the human meniscus. Menisci were obtained from patients with and without knee osteoarthritis (OA), and degeneration was histologically assessed using a grading system. Immunohistochemistry, real‐time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and Western blot analysis were performed to examine the expressions of chondrogenic markers and of the components of Wnt signaling. Histological analyses showed that meniscal degeneration involved a transition from a fibroblastic to a chondrogenic phenotype with the upregulation of SOX9, collagen type II, collagen type XI, and aggrecan, which were associated with increased Wnt5a and ROR2 and decreased TCF7 expressions. OA menisci showed significantly higher expressions of Wnt5a and ROR2 and significantly lower expressions of AXIN2 and TCF7 than non‐OA menisci on real‐time PCR and Western blot analysis. These results potentially demonstrated that increased expression of Wnt5a/ROR2 signaling promoted chondrogenesis with decreased expression in downstream Wnt/β‐catenin signaling. This study provides insights into the role of Wnt signaling in the process of meniscal degeneration, shifting to a chondrogenic phenotype. The findings suggested that the increased expression of Wnt5a/ROR2 and decreased expression of the downstream target of Wnt/β‐catenin signaling are associated with chondrogenesis in meniscal degeneration. Accurate tumor localization and resection margin acquisition are essential in gastric cancer surgery. Preoperative placement of marking clips in laparoscopic gastrectomy as well as intraoperative gastroscopy can be used for gastric cancer surgery. However, these procedures are not available at all institutions. We conducted a prospective clinical trial to investigate the diagnostic performance of near-infrared fluorescent clips (ZEOCLIP FS) in laparoscopic gastrectomy. Patients with gastric cancer or neuroendocrine tumor in whom laparoscopic distal, pylorus-preserving, or proximal gastrectomy was planned were enrolled (n = 20) in this study. Fluorescent clips were placed proximal and/or distal to the tumor via gastroscopy on the day before surgery. During surgery, the clips were detected using a fluorescent laparoscope, and suturing was performed where fluorescence was detected. The clip locations were then confirmed via gastroscopy, and the stomach was transected. The primary endpoint was the detection rate of the marking clips using fluorescence, and the secondary endpoints were complications and distance between the clips and stitches. Among the 20 patients enrolled, distal and pylorus-preserving gastrectomies were performed in 18 and 2 patients, respectively. All clips were detected in 15 patients, indicating a detection rate of 75.0% (90% confidence interval: 54.4%-89.6%). Furthermore, no complications related to the clips were observed. The median distance between the clips and stitches was 5 (range, 0–10) mm. Mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S ribosomal RNA type-c (MOTS-c), a mitochondrial microprotein, has been described as a novel regulator of glucose and lipid metabolism. In addition to its role as a metabolic regulator, MOTS-c prevents skeletal muscle atrophy in high fat-fed mice. Here, we examined the preventive effect of MOTS-c on skeletal muscle mass, using an immobilization-induced muscle atrophy model, and explored its underlying mechanisms. Male C57BL/6J mice (10 wk old) were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental groups: nonimmobilization control group (sterilized water injection), immobilization control group (sterilized water injection), and immobilization and MOTS-c-treated group (15 mg/kg/day MOTS-c injection). We used casting tape for the immobilization experiment. After 8 days of the experimental period, skeletal muscle samples were collected and used for Western blotting, RNA sequencing, and lipid and collagen assays. Immobilization reduced ~15% of muscle mass, whereas MOTS-c treatment attenuated muscle loss, with only a 5% reduction. MOTS-c treatment also normalized phospho- AKT, phospho-FOXO1, and phospho-FOXO3a expression levels and reduced circulating inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1b (IL-1b), interleukin-6 (IL-6), chemokine C-X-C motif ligand 1 (CXCL1), and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), in immobilized mice. Unbiased RNA sequencing and its downstream analyses demonstrated that MOTS-c modified adipogenesis- modulating gene expression within the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pathway. Supporting this observation, muscle fatty acid levels were lower in the MOTS-c-treated group than in the casted control mice. These results suggest that MOTS-c treatment inhibits skeletal muscle lipid infiltration by regulating adipogenesis-related genes and prevents immobilization- induced muscle atrophy. We are interested in the global bifurcation diagram of radial solutions for the Gelfand problem with the exponential nonlinearity and a positive radially symmetric weight in the unit ball. When the weight is constant, it is known that the bifurcation curve has infinitely many turning points if the dimension 3 ≤ N ≤ 9 , and it has no turning points if N ≥ 10. In this paper, we show that the perturbation of the weight does not affect the bifurcation structure when 3 ≤ N ≤ 9. Moreover, we find a one-parameter family of radial singular solutions for a parametrized weight and study the Morse index of the singular solution. As a result, we prove that the perturbation affects the bifurcation structure in the critical dimension N = 10. Pyrolytic synergistic interactions, in which the production of pyrolyzates is enhanced or inhibited, commonly occur during the co-pyrolysis of different polymeric materials, such as plastics and biomass. Although these interactions can increase the yield of desired pyrolysis products under controlled degradation conditions, the desired compounds must be separated from complex pyrolyzates and further purified. To balance these dual effects, this study was aimed at examining pyrolytic synergistic interactions during slow heating co-pyrolysis of biodegradable plastics including polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexaoate) (PHBH) and petroleum-based plastics including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). Comprehensive investigations based on thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and evolved gas analysis-mass spectrometry revealed that PLA and PHBH decompose at lower temperatures (273–378 °C) than HDPE, PP, and PS (386–499 °C), with each polymer undergoing independent decomposition without any pyrolytic interactions. Thus, the independent pyrolysis of biodegradable plastics, such as PLA and PHBH, with common plastics, such as HDPE, PP, and PS, can theoretically be realized through temperature control, enabling the selective recovery of their pyrolyzates in different temperature ranges. Asthma is a widespread airway disorder where GATA3-dependent Type-2 helper T (Th2) cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play vital roles. Asthma-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are enriched in a region located 926-970 kb downstream from GATA3 in the 10p14 (hG900). However, it is unknown how hG900 affects the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation. To investigate the roles of the asthma-associated GATA3 enhancer region in experimental allergic airway inflammation, we first examined the correlation between GATA3 expression and the activation of the hG900 region was analyzed by flow cytometry and ChIP-qPCR. We found that The activation of enhancers in the hG900 region was strongly correlated to the levels of GATA3 in human peripheral T cell subsets. We next generated mice lacking the mG900 region (mG900KO mice) were generated by the CRISPR-Cas9 system, and the development and function of helper T cells and ILCs in mG900KO mice were analyzed in steady-state conditions and allergic airway inflammation induced by papain or house dust mite (HDM). The deletion of the mG900 did not affect the development of lymphocytes in steady-state conditions or allergic airway inflammation induced by papain. However, mG900KO mice exhibited reduced allergic inflammation and Th2 differentiation in the HDM-induced allergic airway inflammation. The analysis of the chromatin conformation around Gata3 by circular chromosome conformation capture coupled to high-throughput sequencing (4C-seq) revealed that the mG900 region interacted with the transcription start site of Gata3 with an influencing chromatin conformation in Th2 cells. Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of macular hole (MH) surgery as a historical perspective after its inception in 1991. Patients and Methods: Retrospective review of 1032 eyes of 949 patients with an idiopathic MH who were followed for at least one year after the initial surgery. All surgeries were performed from 1990 to 2016 by one surgeon (NO) and included phacovitrectomy for patients of ≥ 40-years-of-age, a removal of the posterior hyaloid and epiretinal membrane, and SF6 gas tamponade with a 1-week face-down. After 1998, internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling became the conventional procedure. All surgeries were classified into four periods based on the year of the initial surgery. The first period was 1990~1995 (n = 222), the second period was 1996~1999 (n=327), the third period was 2000~2004 (n = 234), and the last period was 2005~2016 (n=249). Results: The mean follow-up period was 81.3, 79.8, 88.4, and 77.3 months; hole size was 0.33, 0.28, 0.25, and 0.24 disk diameter; hole duration was 15.1, 10.6, 8.2, and 6.1 months; the decimal visual acuity (VA) was 0.13, 0.15, 0.17, and 0.19. The initial closure rate was 61.3, 78.0, 96.6, and 96.4%. The final decimal visual acuity was 0.33, 0.50, 0.66, and 0.79. The rate of a final decimal VA of 0.5 or better was 48.2, 66.4, 82.1, and 88.8%. The rate of a final decimal visual acuity of 1.0 or more was 17.6, 29.3, 43.6, and 58.2%. Multiple regression analyses showed that hole duration and ILM peeling were significantly associated with both the anatomic and functional outcomes. Conclusion: The favorable outcomes of MH surgery was primarily achieved by earlier surgery and conventional ILM peeling. Favorable results might be obtained using only conventional ILM peeling. Direct InN growth is demonstrated and characterized on a sapphire (Al2O3) substrate by plasma‐enhanced metal–organic chemical vapor deposition using high‐density nitrogen (N2) microstrip‐line microwave plasma. N2 plasma irradiation at 650 °C for 20 min forms AlN on Al2O3 substrate. No peak regarding metallic In droplets is detected from InN/Al2O3 regardless of N2 plasma irradiation. InN is found to be rotated 30° with their a‐axis oriented to become [101¯0]$[ {10\bar{1}0} ]$ InN // [112¯0]$[ {11\bar{2}0} ]$ Al2O3. The transition layers are confirmed at the InN/Al2O3 interface regardless of N2 plasma irradiation. In this study, we explored anti-inflammatory compounds from the brown alga Dictyopteris polypodioides and isolated 7 meroterpenoids. Their anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated using the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse macrophage cell line, RAW264. Yahazunol (1) exhibited similar nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory activity as zonarol (2), which has previously been shown to be an anti-inflammatory compound. Yahazunol (1), zonarol (2), and isozonarol (3) inhibited not only NO production but also inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin-6, and C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 mRNA expression in RAW264 cells. The structure-activity relationships of the 11 compounds, including their synthetic analogs, revealed the significance of the hydroquinone moiety in the anti-inflammatory activity of these sesquiterpenoids in RAW264 cells. Diacetylated zonarol (9) exhibited an activity comparable to that of zonarol as a result of intracellular deacetylation. While historians have frequently depicted Scottish roles in the East India trade from peripheral viewpoints, they have tended to overlook the direct contributions of merchants and manufacturers engaged in the East India trade from Scotland. This article examines the activities of Glasgow-based James Finlay & Co. in the China trade during the 1820s and early 1830s. It demonstrates that the firm already had more than a decade of experience engaging in the China trade before the complete abolition of the East India Company's monopoly in 1834. It also argues that the Glasgow firm had a strong connection with London and extended its trading network to Manchester, where the firm outsourced its production for its consignments to the East. This research also contributes to broader East India and China trade issues at that time. Firstly, Finlay's China operations by the East Indiamen suggest that the legality gave the Company's vessels an advantage even after the partial opening of the East India trade in 1814. Secondly, this article highlights the significance of the roles of agency houses in the early phase of the China trade. Thirdly, the case of James Finlay & Co. demonstrates that the opening of the China trade in 1834 was not as significant an episode as conventional scholarship made it out to be. In addition, this research argues that Kirkman Finlay and other Glasgow East India interests leveraged their connection with the Canton house, which they acquired through their trial operations, to advocate for free trade with China. The structure and energetics of charged point defects in thorium dioxide (ThO2) have been investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) and phonon simulations. DFT simulations were performed under both zero-pressure and constant volume conditions. Termed as the free volume change of the point defects, the change in volume of the supercell has been computed in the zero-pressure case. Supercell expansion was observed with the increase of the (nominal) charge state of anion (O) interstitials and cation (Th) vacancies from neutral to its maximum. On the contrary, contraction of the supercell has been observed with anion vacancies and cation interstitials as the defect charge increases. The supercell volume change with respect to the charge state has been correlated with the resulting defect energetics. It has been observed that, as the defect charge increased, the internal energy and entropy of defect formation of the cation vacancies and anion interstitials were found to increase, while that of the cation interstitials and anion vacancies decreased. The temperature dependence of internal energy and entropy has also been examined. It was found that, as the temperature increases, the internal energies of the formation of cation vacancies and anion interstitials decrease, while those of the cation interstitials and anion vacancies increase. Licensed mRNA COVID-19 vaccines require booster doses to sustain SARS-CoV-2-specific responses, creating the need for novel, broadly immunogenic vaccines. We aimed to compare the immunogenicity, safety, and tolerability of ARCT-154—a self-amplifying mRNA vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 D614G variant—with the BNT162b2 (Comirnaty; Pfizer–BioNTech) mRNA vaccine when administered as a fourth-dose booster. This double-blind, multicentre, randomised, controlled, phase 3, non-inferiority trial, conducted at 11 outpatient clinical sites in Japan, enrolled healthy adults aged at least 18 years who had previously been immunised with two doses of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 [Spikevax; Moderna]) followed by a third dose of BNT162b2 at least 3 months before enrolment. Participants were randomly assigned, in a 1:1 ratio using an Interactive Response Technology system with a block size of four, and with stratification by age (18–64 years or ≥65 years) and by interval since last COVID-19 vaccination (<5 months or ≥5 months), to receive either ARCT-154 or BNT162b2 as a fourth-dose booster via deltoid intramuscular injection. Participants and investigators assessing outcomes were masked to group assignment. The primary objective, measured in per-protocol set 1 (consisting of participants with no evidence of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection who received their intended injection according to protocol), was to show that the immune response 28 days after the ARCT-154 vaccine was non-inferior to that of the BNT162b2 vaccine, measured in terms of both pseudovirus neutralising antibody geometric mean titre (GMT) ratios and seroresponse rates against the wild-type Wuhan-Hu-1 strain of SARS-CoV-2. Non-inferiority was declared when the lower limit of the 95% CI of the ARCT-154 to BNT162b2 GMT ratio exceeded 0·67, and when the lower limit for the difference in seroresponse rates exceeded −10%. Key secondary endpoints included the immune response against the omicron BA.4/5 subvariant, which was assessed for non-inferiority and superiority in per-protocol set 1. Safety was assessed in the full analysis set. This study was registered on the Japan Registry for Clinical Trials, jRCT 2071220080, and is ongoing. In per-protocol set 1, the GMTs of surrogate neutralising antibodies induced against the Wuhan-Hu-1 SARS-CoV-2 strain in the ARCT-154 group (5641 [95% CI 4321–7363]) were non-inferior to those in the BNT162b2 group (3934 [2993–5169]) when measured at 28 days after boosting, with a GMT ratio of 1·43 (95% CI 1·26–1·63). Seroresponse rates were 65·2% (95% CI 60·2–69·9) in the ARCT-154 group versus 51·6% (46·4–56·8) in the BNT162b2 group, a difference of 13·6% (95% CI 6·8–20·5). GMTs against the omicron BA.4/5 variant on day 29 were 2551 (1687–3859) in the ARCT-154 group and 1958 (1281–2993) in the BNT162b2 group—a GMT ratio of 1·30 (1·07–1·58)—with seroresponse rates of 69·9% (65·0–74·4) and 58·0% (52·8–63·1). Both boosters were equally well tolerated. No treatment-related deaths were reported, nor were there severe or serious adverse events considered to be causally associated related to study vaccination. One serious adverse event, a foot deformity reported in a participant in the BNT162b2 group, was observed but determined not to have a causal relationship to the study vaccination. One severe adverse event, a case of abnormal hepatic function in the ARCT-154 group, was considered to be related to study vaccine. Adverse events of special interest for detection of myocarditis and pericarditis included chest pain (one case in the ARCT-154 group and three cases in the BNT162b2 group) and shortness of breath (two cases in the BNT162b2 group), all of which were considered to have a reasonable possibility of being related to vaccination. Local reactions were reported by 398 (95%) of 420 participants receiving the ARCT-154 vaccine and 395 (97%) of 408 participants receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine, and solicited systemic adverse events by 276 (66%) of those receiving the ARCT-154 vaccine and 255 (63%) of those receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine. Adverse events were mainly mild in severity, occurring and resolving within 3–4 days after vaccination. In adults who had previously received three doses of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, immune responses 28 days after an ARCT-154 booster dose were non-inferior to those observed after a BNT162b2 booster dose for the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain of SARS-CoV-2 and superior for the Omicron BA.4/5 variant. Increased immune responses at 28 days might provide increased likelihood of protection against these strains during this period and could also result in longer duration of protection. Purpose: The AAST Organ Injury Scale is widely adopted for splenic injury severity but suffers from only moderate inter-rater agreement. This work assesses SpleenPro, a prototype interactive explainable artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) diagnostic aid to support AAST grading, for effects on radiologist dwell time, agreement, clinical utility, and user acceptance. Methods: Two trauma radiology ad hoc expert panelists independently performed timed AAST grading on 76 admission CT studies with blunt splenic injury, first without AI/ML assistance, and after a 2-month washout period and randomization, with AI/ML assistance. To evaluate user acceptance, three versions of the SpleenPro user interface with increasing explainability were presented to four independent expert panelists with four example cases each. A structured interview consisting of Likert scales and free responses was conducted, with specific questions regarding dimensions of diagnostic utility (DU); mental support (MS); effort, workload, and frustration (EWF); trust and reliability (TR); and likelihood of future use (LFU). Results: SpleenPro significantly decreased interpretation times for both raters. Weighted Cohen's kappa increased from 0.53 to 0.70 with AI/ML assistance. During user acceptance interviews, increasing explainability was associated with improvement in Likert scores for MS, EWF, TR, and LFU. Expert panelists indicated the need for a combined early notification and grading functionality, PACS integration, and report autopopulation to improve DU. Conclusions: SpleenPro was useful for improving objectivity of AAST grading and increasing mental support. A fungus, Acremonium strictum KR21-2, produces biogenic manganese oxides (BMOs) that can oxidize exogenous Mn2+ ions to form different BMO phases. When other guest ions are present during the BMO formation, it can strongly affect the mineralogical characteristics of the resultant BMO phase. The impact of coexisting Ni2+ ions on the mineralogy of BMO phases formed through enzymatic Mn(II) oxidation and its sequestration ability is not yet fully understood. To better understand it, repeated sequestration experiments were conducted using BMOs in Ni2+/Mn2+ binary, single Ni2, and single Mn2+ solution systems with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. It was observed that simultaneous sequestration of Ni2+ and Mn2+ was efficient, with irreversible Ni2+ incorporation at pH values above 7.0. The resultant BMO phases showed that Ni2+-bearing Mn oxides resembling feitknechitite (β-MnOOH) were developed through enzymatic Mn(II) oxidation. At pH values below 6.5, the turbostratic birnessite structure was maintained even in Ni2+/Mn2+ binary solutions, and subsequently, the Ni2+ sequestration efficiency was low. The pseudo-first-order rate constants of enzymatically inactivated BMOs for Mn2+ sequestration were two orders of magnitude lower than those of active BMOs, indicating the crucial role of the enzymes in precipitating Ni2+-bearing Mn oxide phases. Background: Early diagnosis of dementia is important for both initiation of non‐pharmacological activities to slow cognitive decline as well as the development of disease‐modifying drugs; however, it appears there may be a tendency for formal diagnosis to be delayed. Since the current status of diagnosis in Japan is unclear, we conducted a survey with family caregivers of patients with dementia using questionnaires and interviews to investigate the factors regarding the dementia diagnosis process in Japan. Methods: We distributed questionnaires to family caregivers of people with dementia and conducted additional follow‐up interviews with approximately half of them. We calculated odds ratios for the time to diagnosis using logistic regression analysis for each characteristic from the questionnaire data. We also created co‐occurrence networks from the interview data in order to provide qualitative context to the questionnaire data. Results: We collected 68 questionnaires and conducted 32 interviews. The median time to diagnosis was 12 months, and logistic regression analysis showed a significant trend toward shorter time to diagnosis in the absence of other caregivers. In addition, there were significant differences in age, relationship with patients and the time from the first visit to the final diagnosis between groups with and without other caregivers. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the presence or absence of other caregivers may affect caregivers' behaviour and the time taken to receive a diagnosis of dementia. These findings indicate it may be beneficial to predict inhibiting factors and change approaches based on caregivers' and patients' background to promote early diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an alternative method to determine leaf CO2 assimilation rate (An), eliminating the need for gas exchange measurements in proximal and remote sensing. This method combines the Farquhar–von Caemmerer–Berry photosynthesis model with mechanistic light reaction (MLR) theory and leaf energy balance (EB) analysis. The MLR theory estimates the actual electron transport rate (J) by leveraging chlorophyll fluorescence via pulse amplitude‐modulated fluorometry for proximal sensing or sun‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence measurements for remote sensing, along with spectral reflectance. The EB equation is used to directly estimate stomatal conductance from leaf temperature. In wheat and soybean, the MLR‐EB model successfully estimated An variations, including midday depression, under various environmental and phenological conditions. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the leaf boundary layer conductance (gb) played an equal, if not more, crucial role compared to the variables for J. This was primarily caused by the indirect influence of gb through the EB equation rather than its direct impact on convective CO2 exchange on the leaf. Although the MLR‐EB model requires an accurate estimation of gb, it can potentially reduce uncertainties and enhance applicability in photosynthesis assessment when gas exchange measurements are unavailable. Summary statement: This study introduces a novel model for high‐throughput estimation of leaf CO2 assimilation rate. This review investigates the latest trends in separation technologies regarding hard-to-recycle thin cables, specifically in the form of end-of-life wire harnesses (WHs). The cables in WHs mainly contain copper (Cu) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), which is commonly used to insulate and sheath cables. This review reveals that most separation technologies prioritize the recovery of Cu and overlook that of PVC. The recovery of high-purity PVC is very important because of its incompatibility with other plastics or Cu during recycling treatments. Through this investigation, we confirm that physical treatments, such as stripping and chopping, are insufficient to recover high-purity PVC from thin cables. Instead, a combination of chemical (e.g., swelling of PVC insulation or sheathing of cables under a suitable solvent) and physical (e.g., ball or rod milling and mechanical agitation of swollen cables) treatments can be used to achieve the recovery of high-purity PVC and Cu both for recycling. Cancer cells employ glycolysis for their survival and growth (the "Warburg effect"). Consequently, surrounding cells including immune cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) are exposed to hypoglycemic, hypoxic, and low pH circumstances. Since effector T cells depend on the glycolysis for their survival and functions, the metabolically harsh TME established by cancer cells is unfavorable, resulting in the impairment of effective antitumor immune responses. By contrast, immunosuppressive cells such as regulatory T (Treg) cells can infiltrate, proliferate, survive, and exert immunosuppressive functions in the metabolically harsh TME, indicating the different metabolic dependance between effector T cells and Treg cells. Indeed, some metabolites that are harmful for effector T cells can be utilized by Treg cells; lactic acid, a harmful metabolite for effector T cells, is available for Treg cell proliferation and functions. Deficiency of amino acids such as tryptophan and glutamine in the TME impairs effector T cell activation but increases Treg cell populations. Furthermore, hypoxia upregulates fatty acid oxidation via hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) and promotes Treg cell migration. Adenosine is induced by the ectonucleotidases CD39 and CD73, which are strongly induced by HIF-1α, and reportedly accelerates Treg cell development by upregulating Foxp3 expression in T cells via A2AR-mediated signals. Therefore, this review focuses on the current views of the unique metabolism of Treg cells dictated by cancer cells. In addition, potential cancer combination therapies with immunotherapy and metabolic molecularly targeted reagents that modulate Treg cells in the TME are discussed to develop "immune metabolism-based precision medicine".
