The international GEOTRACES program was developed to enhance knowledge about the distribution of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) in the ocean and to reduce the uncertainty about their sources, sinks, and internal cycling. Recognizing the importance of intercalibration from the outset, GEOTRACES implemented intercalibration efforts early in the program, and consensus materials were generated that included the full range of TEIs dissolved in seawater, in suspended particles, and from aerosols. The GEOTRACES section cruises include "crossover station(s)" that are occupied by two or more sections and whereby all aspects of sample collection, preservation, and processing can be compared and intercalibrated. Once data-sets are generated, an international intercalibration committee reviews intercalibration reports and works with the community to address issues and provide intercalibrated data for intermediate data products. This process has resulted in a highly cooperative community that shares advances in protocols to strengthen capacity building and GEOTRACES outcomes, including an unprecedented oceanic atlas of TEIs, with data quality that is state-of-the-art. The ocean region along the latitude of 40°S in the South Atlantic, characterized by enhanced primary productivity, forms a transition zone between the nutrient replete but iron depleted Southern Ocean, and the nitrate and iron depleted Subtropical Gyre. Here, we present distributions of nutrient-type dissolved and particulate trace metals (dTMs and pTMs) including cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in the South Atlantic from the GEOTRACES GA10 cruises. Phytoplankton uptake, riverine and atmospheric inputs shaped dTM and pTM concentrations in surface waters (dCd 27.8 ± 36.0 pmol kg−1, n = 222; dCu 0.732 ± 0.429 nmol kg−1, n = 222; dNi 3.38 ± 0.52 nmol kg−1, n = 219; dZn 0.332 ± 0.398 nmol kg−1, n = 214). Subsurface nutrients and dTMs (dCd 563 ± 184 pmol kg−1, n = 335; dCu 1.819 ± 0.773 nmol kg−1, n = 334; dNi 6.19 ± 1.06 nmol kg−1, n = 330; dZn 3.71 ± 2.10 nmol kg−1, n = 333) were controlled by the mixing of Antarctic origin waters and North Atlantic Deep Waters (NADW) with negligible contributions from local remineralization. Dissolved and particulate TMs in the Argentine Basin showed elevated concentrations towards the seafloor because of benthic inputs. Direct hydrothermal inputs of dTMs and pTMs to deep waters were not observed along the transect. The Cd-Cu-Zn-phosphate stoichiometries of Antarctic origin waters were set by a combination of dynamic physical circulation and preferential uptake of Cd, Cu, and Zn relative to phosphate in surface waters because of a dominance by diatoms in the Southern Ocean. Water mass mixing subsequently produced convoluted dCu-P and dZn-P relationships and apparent linear dCd-P and dNi-P relationships in the South Atlantic. More importantly, endmember characteristics of Antarctic waters and NADW are largely fixed in their formation regions in high latitude oceans. Therefore, the highly dynamic high latitude oceans are key regions that supply nutrients and TMs at specific ratios to low latitude oceans via the thermohaline circulation. Abstract High quality observational data with a firm uncertainty assessment are essential for the proper validation of biogeochemical models for trace metals such as iron. Typically, concentrations of these metals are very low in oceanic waters (nM and sub nM) and ICP-MS is therefore a favoured technique for quantitative analysis. Uncertainties in the measurement step are generally well constrained, even at sub-nM concentrations. However, the measurement step is only part of the overall procedure. For the determination of trace metal solubilities from aerosols in the surface ocean, aerosol collection on a filter paper followed by a leaching procedure is likely to make a significant contribution to the overall uncertainty. This paper quantifies the uncertainties for key trace metals (cobalt, iron, lead and vanadium), together with aluminium as a reference element, for a controlled, flow through laboratory leaching procedure using filters collected from three different sampling sites (Tudor Hill (Bermuda), Heraklion (Crete) and Tel-Shikmona (Israel)) and water, glucuronic acid and desferrioxamine B as leachants. Relative expanded uncertainties were in the range of 12–29% for cobalt, 12–62% for iron, 13–45% for lead and 5–11% for vanadium. Fractional solubilities for iron ranged from 0.2 ± 0.1% to 16.9 ± 3.5%. This paper overviews the evolution of suitable analytical approaches for the determination of dissolved iron in seawater. The focus is on sampling and sample treatment, detection methods and quality assurance of the data. Iron is a vital trace element for the growth of marine organisms and is the limiting micronutrient for primary production in many parts of the world's oceans. The concentration of dissolved iron in seawater therefore influences the past and present day global carbon cycle and consequently Earth's climate. Hence it is important to understand the marine biogeochemistry of iron and quantify the spatial and temporal distribution of the element. In order to do this, it is essential that robust and validated methods with appropriate detection limits, precision and accuracy are available for the determination of iron species in seawater. Abstract: Coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Alaska (GoA) are considered iron-rich and nitrate-poor, in contrast to the iron-poor, high-nitrate, low chlorophyll (HNLC) waters of the central GoA. The degree of mixing between these two regimes, enhanced by mesoscale eddies, is essential to the high productivity observed in the region. As part of a study on iron delivery to the central GoA via mesoscale eddies, extensive work was focused on characterizing the coastal endmember, the Alaska Coastal Current. In surface Alaskan coastal waters between Yakutat and the Kenai Peninsula, dissolved iron concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 4.1nM with an average of ∼2nM. In contrast, leachable particulate iron concentrations were much higher and more variable, ranging from over 1μM in the Alsek River plume to less than 5nM at the base of Cook Inlet. Cross-shelf transport of both surface and subsurface dissolved iron and leachable particulate iron was observed. Throughout the study area, leachable particulate iron values were at least an order of magnitude higher than dissolved values, suggesting that the system''s ability to solubilize this large concentration of leachable particulate iron is overwhelmed by the massive input of glacial-derived particulate iron. Nevertheless, suspended leachable particulate iron remains available for exchange to the dissolved phase and is suggested to maintain a relatively constant (∼2nM) source of dissolved iron in the coastal GoA. There has been a growing interest in the cause and impact of hypoxic regions known as "dead zones" that have increasingly appeared along the west coast of the United States and have caused widespread destruction to the crab and fishing industry in this upwelling region. Here, we present results that demonstrate that the hypoxic conditions in the water column over the continental shelf result in a marked increase in iron(ll) concentrations, which contribute to elevated dissolved and labile particulate iron concentrations. These elevated dissolved iron(ll) concentrations resuft from two factors: (1) the hypoxic water column allows extremely elevated iron(lI) concentrations in reducing porewaters to exist close to the sediment water interlace, leading to an increased flux of iron(lI) from the sediments; (2) the low oxygen, low pH, and low temperatures within the bottom boundary layer act in concert to markedly slow down the oxidation rate of Fe(ll). During upwelling conditions, this process can result in a greatly enhanced source of Fe available to upwell to surlace waters, potentially increasing phytoplankton productivity, which can, in turn, lead to enhanced export flux, driving the system further into hypoxic or suboxic conditions. Abstract: The influence of the Columbia River plume on the distributions of nitrate and iron and their sources to coastal and shelf waters were examined. In contrast to other large estuaries, the Columbia River is a unique study area as it supplies very little nitrate (5 μM) and iron (14–30 nM) at salinities of 1–2 to coastal waters. Elevated nitrate and dissolved iron concentrations (as high as 20 μM and 20 nM) were observed, however, in the near field Columbia River plume at salinities of 20. Surface nitrate concentrations were higher than observed in the Columbia River itself and therefore must be added by entrainment of higher nitrate concentrations from subsurface coastal waters. Tidal flow was identified as an important factor in determining the chemical constituents of the Columbia River plume. During the rising flood tide, nitrate and iron were entrained into the plume waters resulting in concentrations of 15 μM and 6 nM, respectively. Conversely, during the ebb tide the concentrations of nitrate and total dissolved iron were reduced to 0.3–3 μM and 1–2 nM, respectively, with a concomitant increase in chlorophyll a concentrations. As these plume waters moved offshore the plume drifted directly westward, over a nitrate depleted water mass (<0.2 μM). The plume water was also identified to move southwards and offshore during upwelling conditions and nitrate concentrations in this far field plume were also depleted. Iron concentrations in the near-field Columbia River plume are sufficient to meet the biological demand. However, due to the low nitrate in the Columbia River itself, nitrate in the plume is primarily dependent on mixing with nitrate rich, cold, high salinity subsurface waters. Iron zinc-enrichment experiments were carried out at Ocean Station Papa in the subarctic North Pacific. In iron-enriched treatments, phytoplankton chlorophyll a (Chl a) increased 20-fold (9.7 µg L-1) above the concentration on day zero. No stimulation of Chl a production or nitrate drawdown was observed on addition of zinc alone compared to the control. In the iron-enriched treatment, bioavailable zinc concentration decreased to 0.2 pmol L-1 lower than that which is known in culture experiments to limit some phytoplankton growth. Theoretical analyses suggest that this zinc concentration would cause diffusion-limited growth of large diatom cells present at the end of the incubation. Direct measurements of zinc-binding ligands indicate that the natural microbial planktonic assemblages have the ability to respond rapidly to conditions of high dissolved zinc concentrations. Rapid ligand production may be a mechanism by which certain phytoplankton reduce zinc toxicity or for maintaining zinc concentrations in the upper water column. Zinc-binding ligands were observed to be both produced and removed on the timescale of 1 d. We suggest that these zinc-binding ligands are produced to assist assimilation, particularly under iron-enriched conditions when concentrations of bioavailable zinc were extremely low, thereby alleviating the effects of zinc limitation. Abstract: The use of a commercially available chelating resin with NTA-type functional groups for concentration of trace metals from seawater is described. Trace metal recoveries from this NTA Superflow chelating resin are pH dependent. At a pH of ≤2 only iron(III) and copper are quantitatively recovered from the resin. Iron(II) cannot be quantitatively recovered from this resin below a pH of 5. However, oxidation of acidified seawater samples (pH 1.7) with H2O2 prior to loading onto the resin has been demonstrated to allow quantitative recovery of total dissolved iron. Deferrioxamine and Rhodoturlic Acid, two commercially available siderophores were used to investigate the effect of strong Fe(III)-binding organic ligands on the ability to retain iron at different pH values. Acidification of seawater samples to pH 1.7 dissociates the iron complexed to these organic ligands, thereby allowing total dissolved iron and copper to be determined. Acidified samples from Monterey Bay were analyzed by a flow injection method coupled to ICP-SFMS detection using the NTA Superflow resin in the pre-concentration step. Results from this study show that when seawater samples are stored acidified (pH 1.7) over time, a portion of iron(III) is reduced to iron(II), thus necessitating the use of H2O2 to reoxidize the Fe(II) to Fe(III) prior to analysis. Total dissolved concentrations of iron and copper can be directly obtained on seawater samples at pH 1.7 with this method, eliminating the need to buffer the sample to a higher pH prior to column loading. Total dissolved Zn concentrations are reported for winter and summer along the E-W line P transect and for summer along S-N line Z transect extending from Ocean Station Papa (OSP; 50°N 145°W) to the respective shelf waters. Surface-water (10 m) concentrations ranged from 0.04 n M in the open ocean to 0.9 nM at the Canadian shelf station. A clear gradient is evident, with dissolved Zn concentrations decreasing with increasing distance from shore along the EW transect in both summer and winter. No consistent trend was observed along the S-N transect. Low concentrations of Zn (0.054).07 nM) were observed in near-surface water at OSP in winter. The vertical distribution of dissolved Zn is oceanographically consistent, showing a silicon-like vertical profile. Concentrations of silicic acid and dissolved Zn at depth are higher than those at equivalent depths in the Atlantic, as expected from deep-water circulation patterns and build-up in concentration of these elements. Dissolved Zn/Si ratios in the upper 200m indicate a trend of decreasing with distance from shore, which infers a decoupling between dissolved Zn and silicic acid in the upper ocean. We hypothesise that the silicon-like profile of dissolved Zn is a result of recycling from relatively biologically resistant organic particulate phases, that leads to profiles very similar to those of dissolved silicon. Other than at two stations where there is very high primary production, there is no apparent horizontal relationship between total dissolved Zn and chlorophyll a or production. Trace metals (TMs) manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and aluminium (Al) have important geochemical and biological roles in the ocean. Here, we present full depth profiles of dissolved (d) and particulate Al, Mn, and Co along the latitude of 40 °S in the South Atlantic Ocean from the GEOTRACES GA10 cruises that operated in austral spring 2010 and summer 2011. The region is characterized by enhanced primary productivity and forms a key transition zone between the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. The mean concentrations of dAl, dCo, and dMn (±standard deviation) were 3.36 ± 2.65 nmol kg−1, 35.3 ± 17.6 pmol kg−1, and 0.624 ± 1.08 nmol kg−1, respectively. Their distributions in surface waters were determined by external sources and complex internal biogeochemical processes. Specifically, surface ocean dCo was controlled by the interplay between phytoplankton uptake, remineralization and external inputs; dMn was likely determined by the formation and photoreduction of Mn-oxides; and dAl was supplied by atmospheric deposition and removed by scavenging onto particles. Fluvial and sedimentary inputs near the Rio de La Plata estuary and benthic sources from the Agulhas Bank resulted in elevated dTM concentrations in near-shore surface waters. These externally sourced dTMs were effectively delivered to the open ocean by offshore diffusion and/or advection, and potentially facilitated enhanced primary productivity along the transect. The distributions of dTMs at depth were predominantly controlled by the mixing of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and waters of Antarctic origin (e.g., Upper Circumpolar Water (UCDW) and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW)). The calculated endmember concentrations of dAl and dCo in NADW showed minor decreases in the SASTG following north–south transport, suggesting removal rates of 0.064 nM/year and 0.035–0.075 pM/year, respectively. The endmember concentration of dCo in AABW was maintained at ∼30 pmol kg−1 without evidence for scavenging removal in the Southern Ocean and SASTG (time frame >400 years). The concentrations of dMn in NADW and AABW were between 0.1 and 0.16 nmol kg−1, and any elevated dMn concentrations were ascribed to local external inputs (e.g., from sediments in the Argentine Basin and hydrothermal activity near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Hence, four controlling factors (sources, internal cycling, water mass mixing and time) need to be considered when assessing TM distributions in the global ocean, even for TMs that are vulnerable to scavenging removal processes. Because the deep waters formed in high latitude oceans are crucial components of the global thermohaline overturning system, any processes (e.g., glacier melting, upwelling and sinking, and biological activity) that impact the preformed dTM concentrations in high latitude oceans will determine the downstream dTM distributions. Therefore, the sources and sinks of TMs and associated biological activity in high latitude oceans could engender basin to global scale impacts on seawater distributions of Al, Co, and Mn and their stoichiometric relationships with macronutrients, and the global biogeochemical cycles of these scavenged-type TMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Organic ligands and nanoparticles increase the resistance to oxidation. • We present an improved multiparametric equation to calculate Fe(II) oxidation rates. • Oxidation rates close to the vent sites are systematically faster than theorized. One of the recently recognized main sources of iron to the deep ocean inventory is the hydrothermal activity associated with mid-ocean ridges. Little is known about the oxidation kinetics of iron(II) within these environments, especially the dependence on physico-chemical parameters such as temperature (T), pH, particle size-fractionation and the effect of organic matter. Following sample collection during the GA13 section cruise, the iron(II) oxidation at six hydrothermal vent sites (Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike, Rainbow, Lost City, Broken Spur and TAG) along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge were investigated, revealing high variability. The Fe(II) oxidation rate constant analysis from multiple stations at two sites (Rainbow and TAG), revealed that factors, other than T and pH, controlled the oxidation process. Experiments on the effect of particle size-fractionation and organic matter at different pH showed that the presence of organic ligands and colloidal size particles delayed the oxidation process, while not affecting the overall pH dependency. Extending our analysis to the broader relationship between the Fe(II) oxidation rate constants across a range of temperatures (between 2 and 25 °C) and pH (between 7 and 8) on a set of selected hydrothermal samples allowed us to derive a multiparametric equation to model the iron(II) oxidation rate constants in the ocean. At the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP), continued atmospheric and oceanic warming is causing significant physical and biogeochemical changes to glaciers and the marine environment. We compare sediment sources and drivers of macronutrient distributions at two bays along the WAP during austral summer 2020, using radioactive radium and stable oxygen isotopes to trace sedimentary influences and quantify different freshwater inputs. In the Ryder Bay, where the Sheldon Glacier is marine-terminating, radium activities at the sediment-water interface indicate considerable benthic mixing. Using radium isotope activity gradients to resolve radium and macronutrient fluxes, we find buoyant meltwater proximal to the glacier drives vigorous mixing of sediment and entrainment of macronutrient deep waters, on the order of 2.0 × 105 mol d−1 for nitrate. Conversely, in the Marian Cove, where the Fourcade Glacier terminates on land, low salinities and oxygen isotopes indicate a meltwater-rich surface layer <1 m thick and rich in sediment, and strong vertical mixing to the seafloor. A continued shift to land-terminating glaciers along the WAP may have a significant impact upon nutrient and sediment supply to the euphotic zone, with impacts upon primary productivity and carbon uptake efficiency. The Southern Ocean is the largest high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) oceanic region, where iron limits phytoplankton growth and productivity and ultimately influences the Biological Carbon Pump (BCP). Natural exceptions to the HNLC regime occur where island wakes cause iron to be mixed into surface waters from sediments, enabling large, prolonged phytoplankton blooms and increased carbon drawdown. Interactions between iron and phytoplankton are reciprocal in blooms: with plankton regulating the (re)cycling of iron through cellular uptake and remineralisation. The depth of iron remineralisation then influences either re-supply to the surface mixed layer biota or sequestration into deeper waters. Water column trace metal observations and shipboard experiments, using bioassays and radioisotope (55Fe, 32Si, 14C) cycling, were undertaken to investigate surface mixed layer phytoplankton iron limitation, iron uptake, and mesopelagic iron remineralisation relative to carbon and silica within the November 2017 bloom downstream of South Georgia. Surface phytoplankton residing in the iron depleted mixed layer were iron limited throughout the four-week sampling period. Experiments designed to investigate particulate water column (re)cycling revealed limited iron remineralisation from freshly produced upper ocean particles. The main pathway of iron transfer from particulates into the dissolved phase was through rapid (<2 d) release of extra-cellular adsorbed iron, which, if occurring in situ , could contribute to observed higher sub-surface dissolved Fe concentrations. This was accompanied by a small loss of cellular carbon, likely through respiration of the fixed 14C, and limited dissolution of particulate 32Si to dissolved 32Si. Decoupling of the remineralisation length scales for Fe, C and Si, with Fe having the fastest turnover, is thus likely in the upper mesopelagic zone beneath the bloom. • Sinking diatom cells are viable in the upper mesopelagic, resisting remineralisation by microbial degradation. • Abiotic release of extracellular Fe, retention of bSiO 2 and respiration of C decouples the remineralisation length scales. • Abiotic release of extracellular Fe could be taken up to replenish cellular Fe or mixed to the surface to prolong a bloom. Dissolved (<0.2 μm) trace metals (dTMs) including iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and cobalt (Co) are micronutrients that (co-) limit phytoplankton growth in many ocean regions. Here, we present the spatial and seasonal distributions of dFe, dMn, and dCo on the Northeast Atlantic continental margin (Celtic Sea), along a transect across the shelf and two off-shelf transects along a canyon and a spur. Waters on the continental shelf showed much higher dTM concentrations (dFe 0.07–6.50 nmol L−1, average 1.41 ± 0.96 nmol L−1, n = 138; dMn 0.868–14.8 nmol L−1, 2.75 ± 2.37 nmol L−1, n = 148; dCo 54.8–217 pmol L−1, 109 ± 32 pmol L−1, n = 144) than on the slope (dFe 0.03–1.90 nmol L−1, 0.65 ± 0.43 nmol L−1, n = 454; dMn 0.223–1.14 nmol L−1, 0.58 ± 0.20 nmol L−1, n = 458; dCo 27.3–122 pmol L−1, 71.7 ± 11.7 pmol L−1, n = 441), attributed to strong dTM contributions from a low-salinity endmember, i.e., riverine discharge. Benthic sedimentary input via reductive dissolution (especially for dFe and dMn), delineated by short-lived radium (Ra) isotopic activities (223Ra xs and 224Ra xs), was only prominent at a station (Site A) characterized by fine sediments. On the continental slope, dMn levels at depth were mainly determined by the formation of insoluble Mn oxides and the intrusion of Mediterranean Outflow Waters. In contrast, dFe and dCo concentrations at depth were balanced by the regeneration from remineralization of sinking organic particles and scavenging removal. In addition, bottom and intermediate nepheloid layers along the slope illustrated both elevated dTM concentrations and Ra isotopic activities. The presence of nepheloid layers is especially significant along the canyon transect relative to the spur transect, demonstrating the importance of slope topography on the off-shelf transport of dTMs into the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. As a seasonal stratified shelf sea, dTMs and nutrients showed synchronized seasonal variations on the shelf, indicating the influence of biological processes in addition to source effects. Surface dFe and dCo were depleted in summer due to enhanced biological uptake, while sub-surface dFe and dCo were elevated in summer and autumn ascribed to the remineralization of sinking organic particles. In contrast, surface dMn levels were predominantly controlled by the seasonal variations in photoreduction, while sub-surface dMn concentrations were relatively constant throughout the year. The combined effects of fluvial and benthic sources, topographical controls, and biological processes shape the seasonal variations of dTM distributions. Such seasonal variations in dTMs and biological activities can affect the biological carbon pump on the Northeast Atlantic continental margin, and may further influence the carbon cycle in the Atlantic Ocean via the dynamic dTM exchange between continental margins and the open ocean. Continental shelves and shelf seas play a central role in the global carbon cycle. However, their importance with respect to trace element and isotope (TEI) inputs to ocean basins is less well understood. Here, we present major findings on shelf TEI biogeochemistry from the GEOTRACES programme as well as a proof of concept for a new method to estimate shelf TEI fluxes. The case studies focus on advances in our understanding of TEI cycling in the Arctic, transformations within a major river estuary (Amazon), shelf sediment micronutrient fluxes and basin-scale estimates of submarine groundwater discharge. The proposed shelf flux tracer is 228-radium (T1/2 =5.75 yr), which is continuously supplied to the shelf from coastal aquifers, sediment porewater exchange and rivers. Model-derived shelf 228Ra fluxes are combined with TEI/228Ra ratios to quantify ocean TEI fluxes from the western North Atlantic margin. The results from this new approach agree well with previous estimates for shelf Co, Fe, Mn and Zn inputs and exceed published estimates of atmospheric deposition by factors of approximately 3-23. Lastly, recommendations are made for additional GEOTRACES process studies and coastal margin-focused section cruises that will help refine the model and provide better insight on the mechanisms driving shelf-derived TEI fluxes to the ocean. The dispersal of dissolved iron (DFe) from hydrothermal vents is poorly constrained. Combining field observations and a modeling hierarchy, we find the dispersal of DFe from the Trans‐Atlantic‐Geotraverse vent site occurs predominantly in the colloidal phase and is controlled by multiple physical processes. Enhanced mixing near the seafloor and transport through fracture zones at fine‐scales interacts with the wider ocean circulation to drive predominant westward DFe dispersal away from the Mid‐Atlantic ridge at the 100 km scale. In contrast, diapycnal mixing predominantly drives northward DFe transport within the ridge axial valley. The observed DFe dispersal is not reproduced by the coarse resolution ocean models typically used to assess ocean iron cycling due to their omission of local topography and mixing. Unless biogeochemical models account for fine‐scale physics and colloidal Fe, they will inaccurately represent DFe dispersal from axial valley ridge systems, which make up half of the global ocean ridge crest. Once it mixed with oxygenated seawater, precipitation leads to iron being lost from the dissolved phase to generate seafloor metal deposits. However, a small fraction of iron supplied escapes precipitation and remains in the dissolved phase. The processes that control the retention and ocean transport of hydrothermal dissolved iron is important as it has a disproportionate influence on the global carbon cycle. In this work, we examined the processes driving the dispersal of dissolved iron from a major site of hydrothermal venting on the northern mid Atlantic ridge. We found that the complex topography of the mid Atlantic ridge was crucial in steering the escape of dissolved iron in the colloidal size range out of the immediate mid ocean ridge system. This raises challenges for the large scale ocean models used to represent the global ocean iron cycle as they are typically not parameterized at sufficient spatial resolution. The use of multiple grids, with higher resolution nests, may offer a solution to the challenge of representing the interactions of tracer dispersal with complex topography. Nano‐ and picophytoplankton are a major component of open‐ocean ecosystems and one of the main plankton functional types in biogeochemical models, yet little is known about their trace metal contents. In cultures of the picoeukaryote Ostreococcus lucimarinus, iron limitation reduced iron quotas by 68%, a fraction of the plasticity known in diatoms. In contrast, a commonly co‐occurring cyanobacterium, Prochlorococcus, showed variable iron contents with iron availability in culture. Synchrotron X‐ray fluorescence was used to measure single‐cell metal (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) quotas of autotrophic flagellates (1.4–16.8‐μm diameter) collected from four ocean regions. Iron quotas were tightly constrained and showed little response to iron availability, similar to cultured Ostreococcus. Zinc quotas also did not vary with zinc availability but appeared to vary with phosphorus availability. The supply and bioavailability of dissolved iron sets the magnitude of surface productivity for ∼40% of the global ocean. The redox state, organic complexation, and phase (dissolved versus particulate) of iron are key determinants of iron bioavailability in the marine realm, although the mechanisms facilitating exchange between iron species (inorganic and organic) and phases are poorly constrained. Here we use the isotope fingerprint of dissolved and particulate iron to reveal distinct isotopic signatures for biological uptake of iron during a GEOTRACES process study focused on a temperate spring phytoplankton bloom in subtropical waters. At the onset of the bloom, dissolved iron within the mixed layer was isotopically light relative to particulate iron. The isotopically light dissolved iron pool likely results from the reduction of particulate iron via photochemical and (to a lesser extent) biologically mediated reduction processes. As the bloom develops, dissolved iron within the surface mixed layer becomes isotopically heavy, reflecting the dominance of biological processing of iron as it is removed from solution, while scavenging appears to play a minor role. As stable isotopes have shown for major elements like nitrogen, iron isotopes offer a new window into our understanding of the biogeochemical cycling of iron, thereby allowing us to disentangle a suite of concurrent biotic and abiotic transformations of this key biolimiting element. It is now clear that, in some parts of the ocean, inputs of hydrothermal iron (Fe) can make a more significant contribution to the Fe inventory than previously thought. While the Fe isotopic signature of seawater has proved useful for distinguishing between inputs of Fe from atmospheric deposition and seafloor sediments, the Fe isotope signature of hydrothermal vent fluids may change during mixing of vent fluids and seawater. To better constrain the processes leading to these changes, the Fe isotopic compositions (δ 56 Fe) of dissolved and total dissolvable Fe have been determined in high temperature vent fluids and the buoyant hydrothermal plumes at the Beebe and the Von Damm vent fields, which are located along the ultraslow Mid-Cayman spreading center in the Caribbean Sea. Our results show that the δ 56 Fe value of dissolved Fe in the earliest stages of buoyant plume formation was lower (as low as −4.08‰) than measured in a high temperature, low-Mg, vent fluid sample (−0.28‰). This indicates that the iron isotopic signature of dissolved Fe is principally controlled by oxidation of Fe(II) and precipitation of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides that preferentially incorporate heavy Fe isotopes. In support of this, the δ 56 Fe value of labile particulate Fe was higher than the δ 56 Fe value of dissolved Fe. Nevertheless, at Beebe, the δ 56 Fe value of total dissolvable Fe increased as the proportion of Fe predicted to have been lost from the plume increased, consistent with preferential fall-out of Fe-sulfides that are enriched in light Fe isotopes. The very low δ 56 Fe values of dissolved Fe in the Beebe buoyant plume are consistent with (i) the high Fe/H 2 S ratio of the vent fluids, and (ii) high Fe(II) oxidation rates, relative to other vent sites. • Dissolved δ 56 Fe evolves to values as low as −4.08‰ due to rapid oxidation of Fe(II). • Higher values of labile particulate δ 56 Fe support formation of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides. • Incubation experiments provide evidence for the presence of Fe-sulfide nanoparticles. • Spreading rate has no control on δ 56 Fe of hydrothermal Fe delivered to the oceans. Abstract: Mesoscale anticyclonic eddies in the Gulf of Alaska are an important mechanism for cross-shelf exchange of high iron, low nitrate coastal waters and low iron, high nitrate offshore waters. A Kenai eddy was sampled in September 2007, 8 months after formation. The subsurface eddy core layer contained reactive iron concentrations more than eight times greater than waters at the same depths outside the eddy. The subsurface core of the Kenai eddy (25.4≤σ θ ≤25.8) is suggested to be seasonally important as these waters can be brought to the surface with storm events and deep winter mixing. The deeper core layer (25.8≤σ θ ≤27.0) is suggested to be a source of iron to HNLC waters on a longer timescale, due to isopycnal mixing and eventual eddy relaxation. The subsurface and deeper core layers are important reservoirs of iron that can promote and sustain primary productivity over the lifetime of the Kenai eddy. In addition, dissolved and leachable particulate manganese are shown to be excellent tracers of eddy surface and subsurface waters, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study examines the distribution of leachable particulate iron (Fe) in the Columbia River, estuary, and near-field plume. Surface samples were collected during late spring and summer of 2004–2006 as part of four River Influence on Shelf Ecosystems (RISE) cruises. Tidal amplitude and river flow are the primary factors influencing the estuary leachable particulate Fe concentrations, with greater values during high flow and/or spring tides. Near the mouth of the estuary, leachable particulate Fe [defined as the particulate Fe solubilized with a 25% acetic acid (pH 2) leach containing a weak reducing agent to reduce Fe oxyhydroxides and a short heating step to access intracellular Fe] averaged 770 nM during either spring tide or high flow, compared to 320 nM during neap tide, low flow conditions. In the near-field Columbia River plume, elevated leachable particulate Fe concentrations occur during spring tides and/or higher river flow, with resuspended shelf sediment as an additional source to the plume during periods of coastal upwelling and spring tides. Near-field plume concentrations of leachable particulate Fe (at a salinity of 20) averaged 660 nM during either spring tide or high flow, compared to 300 nM during neap tide, low flow conditions. Regardless of tidal amplitude and river flow, leachable particulate Fe concentrations in both the river/estuary and near-field plume are consistently one to two orders of magnitude greater than dissolved Fe concentrations. The Columbia River is an important source of reactive Fe to the productive coastal waters off Oregon and Washington, and leachable particulate Fe is available for solubilization following biological drawdown of the dissolved phase. Elevated leachable Fe concentrations allow coastal waters influenced by the Columbia River plume to remain Fe-replete and support phytoplankton production during the spring and summer seasons. Hydrothermal venting impacts the global-scale biogeochemical cycles of many trace metals and their isotopes. Processes in hydrothermal plumes regulate the dispersal of vent-derived metals and may vary in response to differences in the geologic setting of vent fields and/or the geochemistry of the overlying ocean water. Here we present results of analyses of dissolved Fe and Cr concentrations, and dissolved Fe isotope (δ56Fe) and Cr isotope (δ53Cr) distributions, in seawater samples collected from above TAG and Rainbow vent sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge during the GEOTRACES GA13 cruise. We show that profiles of dissolved Fe and Cr isotopes through the near-field hydrothermal plumes are the mirror image of each other. Oxidation of Fe(II) and precipitation of Fe-(oxyhydr)oxides account for the low δ56Fe values of dissolved Fe, as low as −1.83 ‰ at TAG and −6.94 ‰ at Rainbow. Plume samples with low δ56Fe values are associated with elevated δ53Cr values of dissolved Cr compared to background seawater (by up to +0.14 ‰ and +0.69 ‰ at TAG and Rainbow, respectively), while particulate Cr is characterised by relatively low δ53Cr values (−1.02 to −1.22 ‰). This striking result suggests that seawater Cr(VI) is reduced to Cr(III) and precipitates on the surface of Fe(III) particles within the hydrothermal plume. Reduction of Cr(VI) and scavenging of Cr(III) by plume Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide particles mean that high-temperature hydrothermal systems are likely a net sink for seawater Cr at Rainbow (and also at TAG). As the removal flux of Cr is related to the flux of hydrothermal Fe(II) and the rate of Fe(II) oxidation in the hydrothermal plume, it may (i) vary across vent sites at a global scale and (ii) change over glacial-interglacial cycles. Continental margins are disproportionally important for global primary production, fisheries and CO2 uptake. However, across the Northeast Atlantic shelves, there has been an ongoing summertime decline of key biota—large diatoms, dinoflagellates and copepods—that traditionally fuel higher tropic levels such as fish, sea birds and marine mammals. Here, we combine multiple time series with in situ process studies to link these declines to summer nutrient stress and increasing proportions of picophytoplankton that can comprise up to 90% of the combined pico‐ and nanophytoplankton biomass in coastal areas. Among the pico‐fraction, it is the cyanobacterium Synechococcus that flourishes when iron and nitrogen resupply to surface waters are diminished. Our field data show how traits beyond small size give Synechococcus a competitive edge over pico‐ and nanoeukaryotes. Key is their ability to grow at low irradiances near the nutricline, which is aided by their superior light‐harvesting system and high affinity to iron. However, minute size and lack of essential biomolecules (e.g. omega‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and sterols) render Synechococcus poor primary producers to sustain shelf sea food webs efficiently. The combination of earlier spring blooms and lower summer food quantity and quality creates an increasing period of suboptimal feeding conditions for zooplankton at a time of year when their metabolic demand is highest. We suggest that this nutrition‐related mismatch has contributed to the widespread, ~50% decline in summer copepod abundance we observe over the last 60 years. With Synechococcus clades being prominent from the tropics to the Arctic and their abundances increasing worldwide, our study informs projections of future food web dynamics in coastal and shelf areas where droughts and stratification lead to increasing nutrient starvation of surface waters. In the past decade, several international efforts developed to address urgent societal issues have been identified through, for example, the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). These worthy efforts will bring ocean science research to bear on problems that need attention in the short term. Yet, there is also a continuing need at the international level to support fundamental ocean science and solve methodological issues over the long term. While knowledge needs to be created before it can be applied, national and international science strategy documents often do not mention the need to maintain the health of the basic science enterprise. We argue that international organizations designed to create knowledge must be maintained and strengthened to inform decisions on how to allocate funding for generating knowledge about the ocean versus solving ocean problems. Abstract Copper (Cu) is both an essential micronutrient and toxic to photosynthesizing microorganisms at low concentrations. Its dissolved vertical distribution in the oceans is unusual, being neither a nutrient-type nor scavenged-type element. This distribution is attributed to biological uptake in the surface ocean with remineralisation at depth, combined with strong organic complexation by dissolved ligands, scavenging onto particles, and benthic sedimentary input. We present coupled dissolved and particulate phase Cu isotope data along the UK-GEOTRACES South Atlantic section, alongside higher resolution dissolved and particulate phase Cu concentration measurements. Our dissolved phase isotope data contribute to an emerging picture of homogeneous deep ocean δ65Cu, at about +0.65‰ (relative to NIST SRM 976). We identify two pools of Cu in the particulate phase: a refractory, lithogenic pool, at about 0‰, and a labile pool accessed via a weak acidic leach, at about +0.4‰. These two pools are comparable to those previously observed in sediments. We observe deviations towards lighter δ65Cu values in the dissolved phase associated with local enrichments in particulate Cu concentrations along the continental slopes, and in the surface ocean. Copper isotopes are thus a sensitive indicator of localised particle-associated benthic or estuarine Cu inputs. The measurement of Cu isotopes in seawater is analytically challenging, and we call for an intercalibration exercise to better evaluate the potential impacts of UV-irradiation, storage time, and different analytical procedures. Abstract Here we describe, for the first time, the use of a miniaturized Lab-on-Chip (LoC) nutrient sensor deployed within an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV; Kongsberg Seaglider) to collect high-resolution nitrate (nitrate + nitrite) data in a highly dynamic shelf sea environment. Seasonally stratified temperate shelf seas act as important carbon sinks, where primary production is controlled by the availability of nutrients such as nitrate. Spring phytoplankton blooms and sporadic mixing events can drastically modify the availability of nitrate on temporal scales from hours to days. Traditional sampling methods are unable to capture high frequency events that can be clearly observed using a wet-chemical microfluidic system deployed within a glider. We highlight firstly, an excellent agreement between the LoC and shipboard nitrate + nitrite measurements (r2 = 0.98 n = 11). Secondly, the LoC was able to observe a decrease in nitrate within the surface mixed layer from 5.74 μM (4th) to 1.42 μM (25th) during the onset of the spring bloom, whilst bottom layer concentrations remained constant (6.86 ± 0.16 μM), with an estimated analytical uncertaintly of <0.2 μM. Thirdly, the ability of an LoC sensor deployed within an AUV to accurately capture simultaneous biogeochemical and physical parameters at an enhanced resolution, on both spatial and temporal scales, improves our understanding of biogeochemical cycles within the dynamic temperate shelf sea environments. In the ocean, dissolved cobalt is affected by both nutrient cycling and scavenging onto manganese oxides. The latter process concentrates Co in pelagic sediments, resulting in a small deep water inventory. While the flux of scavenged cobalt to sediments appears steady on timescales > 100,000 years, its residence time in the water column is short, approximately 130 years. Using results from recent GEOTRACES expeditions, we show net removal of dissolved Co from the deep ocean on the order of 0.043 pM year − 1 , which corresponds to a turnover time of 980 years. Scavenging in deep ocean water masses is too slow to match cobalt accumulation rates in marine sediments, requiring most of the scavenging flux to derive from the mesopelagic ocean (< 1500 m depth) where nutrient cycling is active. Based on differences between the Co:P stoichiometry in particles sinking from the euphotic zone and dissolved Co:P remineralization ratios, we calculate areal scavenging rates in the North Atlantic and South Pacific basins on the order of 1.5 and 0.7 μmol m − 2 year − 1 , respectively, which agree with long-term accumulation rates in Atlantic and Pacific sediments. In both basins, over 50% of the scavenged flux of cobalt occurs in the upper 500 m, resulting in decadal turnover times in the mesopelagic. An assessment of sources suggests that the marine cobalt cycle is approximately in balance, but that this inventory may be sensitive to long term trends in the intensity of oxygen minimum zones, which account for ~ 25% of the annual cobalt source to the modern oceans. Anthropogenic emissions have dominated marine Pb sources during the past century. Here we present Pb concentrations and isotope compositions for ocean depth profiles collected in the eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean (GEOTRACES section GA06), to trace the transfer of anthropogenic Pb into the ocean interior. Variations in Pb concentration and isotope composition were associated with changes in hydrography. Water masses ventilated in the southern hemisphere generally featured lower 206 Pb/ 207 Pb and 208 Pb/ 207 Pb ratios than those ventilated in the northern hemisphere, in accordance with Pb isotope data of historic anthropogenic Pb emissions. The distributions of Pb concentrations and isotope compositions in northern sourced waters were consistent with differences in their ventilation timescales. For example, a Pb concentration maximum at intermediate depth (600–900 m, 35 pmol kg −1 ) in waters sourced from the Irminger/Labrador Seas, is associated with Pb isotope compositions ( 206 Pb/ 207 Pb = 1.1818–1.1824, 208 Pb/ 207 Pb = 2.4472–2.4483) indicative of northern hemispheric emissions during the 1950s and 1960s close to peak leaded petrol usage, and a transit time of ∼50–60 years. In contrast, North Atlantic Deep Water (2000–4000 m water depth) featured lower Pb concentrations and isotope compositions ( 206 Pb/ 207 Pb = 1.1762–1.184, 208 Pb/ 207 Pb = 2.4482–2.4545) indicative of northern hemispheric emissions during the 1910s and 1930s and a transit time of ∼80–100 years. This supports the notion that transient anthropogenic Pb inputs are predominantly transferred into the ocean interior by water mass transport. However, the interpretation of Pb concentration and isotope composition distributions in terms of ventilation timescales and pathways is complicated by (1) the chemical reactivity of Pb in the ocean, and (2) mixing of waters ventilated during different time periods. The complex effects of water mass mixing on Pb distributions is particularly apparent in seawater in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean which is ventilated from the southern hemisphere. In particular, South Atlantic Central Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water were dominated by anthropogenic Pb emitted during the last 50–100 years, despite estimates of much older average ventilation ages in this region. Atmospheric deposition is an important pathway by which bioactive trace metals are delivered to the surface ocean. The proportions of total aerosol trace metals that dissolve in seawater, and thus become available to biota, are not well constrained and are therefore a key uncertainty when estimating atmospheric fluxes of these elements to surface waters. The aim of this study was to elucidate the main physico-chemical controls on the dissolution of the bioactive trace metals manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb). To this end, aerosol and surface seawater samples were collected in the Sargasso Sea and subsequently used in sequential seawater leach dissolution experiments to assess the role of aerosol source, seawater temperature, pH, and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and organic ligands, on aerosol trace metal dissolution. Results reveal that changes in key physico-chemical parameters in seawater leaches had little effect on the proportions of Mn, Co, Ni and Pb released from aerosols, although organic ligand amendments impacted the size distribution of aerosol-derived Mn in solution. Conversely, aerosol source and composition had the most significant effect on the dissolution of aerosol Co and Pb, with the most ‘anthropogenic’ aerosol samples displaying the highest fractional solubilities in seawater (up to 58% for Co and 112% for Pb). Fractional solubilities over the range of samples and conditions tested were in the range of 50–104% for Mn, 29–58% for Co, 40–85% for Ni and 67–112% for Pb. A large proportion (36–100%, median 89%) of the total dMn, dCo, dNi and dPb was mobilised rapidly during the first leaching step (5 min), with less dTM being released in leaches 2 through 4. Furthermore, investigation of the size distribution of the aerosol-derived trace metals in seawater showed that dissolved Pb was mostly colloidal (0.02–0.4 μm), dissolved Mn and Co were mostly soluble (< 0.02 μm), and dissolved Ni displayed a mixed size distribution. Good empirical relationships were observed between enrichment factors for aerosol antimony (Sb) and the fractional solubilities of aerosol Fe, Co and Pb, suggesting total aerosol Sb can be useful in estimating and modelling the fractional solubility of these metals using total aerosol trace metal concentrations from historical data. Our study followed the seasonal cycling of soluble (SFe), colloidal (CFe), dissolved (DFe), total dissolvable (TDFe), labile particulate (LPFe), and total particulate (TPFe) iron in the Celtic Sea (NE Atlantic Ocean). Preferential uptake of SFe occurred during the spring bloom, preceding the removal of CFe. Uptake and export of Fe during the spring bloom, coupled with a reduction in vertical exchange, led to Fe deplete surface waters (<0.2 nM DFe; 0.11 nM LPFe, 0.45 nM TDFe, and 1.84 nM TPFe) during summer stratification. Below the seasonal thermocline, DFe concentrations increased from spring to autumn, mirroring NO3− and consistent with supply from remineralized sinking organic material, and cycled independently of particulate Fe over seasonal timescales. These results demonstrate that summer Fe availability is comparable to the seasonally Fe limited Ross Sea shelf and therefore is likely low enough to affect phytoplankton growth and species composition. Nutrients and nutrient-like dissolved trace metals (dTMs) are essential for the functioning of marine organisms and therefore form an important part of ocean biogeochemical cycles. Here, we report on the seasonal distributions of dissolved zinc (dZn), nickel (dNi), copper (dCu), cadmium (dCd), aluminum (dAl), and nutrients on the Northeast Atlantic continental margin (Celtic Sea), which is representative for temperate shelf seas globally. Variations in surface water dTM and nutrient concentrations were mainly regulated by seasonal changes in biological processes. The stoichiometry of dTMs (especially for dCu and dZn) and nutrients on the continental shelf was additionally affected by fluvial inputs. Nutrients and dTMs at depth on the continental slope were determined by water mass mixing driven by ocean circulation, without an important role for local remineralization processes. The Mediterranean Outflow Waters are especially important for delivering Mediterranean-sourced dTMs to the Northeast Atlantic Ocean and drive dTM:nutrient kinks at a depth of ~1000 m. These results highlight the importance of riverine inputs, seasonality of primary production and ocean circulation on the distributions of nutrients and nutrient-like dTMs in temperate continental margin seas. Detailed polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) signatures and chiral Enantiomer Fractions (EFs) of CB-95, CB-136 and CB-149 were measured for 30 workers at a transformer dismantling plant. This was undertaken to identify sources of exposure and investigate changes to the PCB signature and EFs over different exposure periods. Approximately 1.5 g of serum was extracted and PCB signatures were created through analysis by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC–TOFMS) and EFs calculated following analysis by gas chromatography with high resolution mass spectrometry (GC–HRMS). A total of 84 PCBs were identified in the serum samples with concentrations of the 7 indicator PCBs ranging from 11–350 ng g − 1 of serum (1.2–39 μg g − 1 lipid). The PCB signatures were interpreted using principal component analysis (PCA) which was able to distinguish workers with background or recent minimal exposure from those with prolonged occupational exposure. Occupationally exposed individuals had a similar PCB profile to Aroclor A1260. However, individuals with prolonged exposure had depleted proportions of several PCB congeners that are susceptible to metabolism (CB-95, CB-101 and CB-151) and elevated proportions of PCBs that are resistant to metabolism (CB-74, CB-153, CB-138 and CB-180). The results also identified a third group of workers with elevated proportions of CB-28, CB-60, CB-66, CB-74, CB-105 and CB-118 who appeared to have been exposed to an additional source of PCBs. The results show near complete removal of the CB-95 E2 enantiomer in some samples, indicating that bioselective metabolism or preferential excretion of one enantiomer occurs in humans. By considering PCB concentrations along with detailed congener specific signatures it was possible to identify different exposure sources, and gain an insight into both the magnitude and duration of exposure. A flow injection manifold incorporating a solid phase chelating resin (Toyopearl AF-Chelate-650) is reported for the preconcentration of dissolved metals from seawater, with a focus on investigating the effect of the loading pH, wash solution composition and wash time. Cobalt, iron, lead and vanadium have been used as target analytes with contrasting oceanographic behaviour. Quadrupole ICP–MS has been used for detection to make the approach accessible to most laboratories and a collision/reaction cell has been incorporated to minimise polyatomic interferences. Results for the seawater CRM NASS-6 and two GEOTRACES reference materials were in good agreement with the certified/consensus values, demonstrating the suitability of the approach for the determination of trace metals in seawater. The experimental design used allowed a thorough investigation of the uncertainty contribution from each method parameter to the overall expanded uncertainty of the measurement. The results showed that the parameters making the largest contributions were the precision of the peak area measurement and the uncertainty associated with the slope of the calibration curve. Therefore, these are the critical parameters that should be targeted in order to reduce the overall measurement uncertainty. For iron, the wash blank also gave a measureable contribution. PCB signatures can be used for source identification, exposure studies, age dating and bio-monitoring. This study uses comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-ToFMS) to produce a PCB signature comprised of over 80 PCBs for individual Leach's storm petrels (Oceanodroma leucorhoa). The Leach's storm petrel is a relatively small, elusive, understudied pelagic bird, which only returns to remote islands under darkness during the breeding season. Samples were obtained from 25 Leach's storm petrels found dead in Canada and the UK following storm events in 2006 and 2009. Tissue samples were extracted and analysed by GCxGC-ToFMS and results showed that 83 PCB congeners were present in >60% of samples. An assessment of the PCB signature in four different tissue types showed that it did not vary greatly in samples obtained from the gut, heart, liver and stomach. Multivariate statistical analysis identified a distinctive PCB signature in birds from Canada and Europe which was used to identify the regional provenance and transatlantic movement of individual birds. The findings showcase the ability of GCxGC-ToFMS to provide the high quality congener specific analysis that is necessary for PCB fingerprinting, as well as highlighting the potential of PCB signatures for use in ecological studies of movement, foraging and behaviour. Inorganic nitrogen depletion restricts productivity in much of the low-latitude oceans, generating a selective advantage for diazotrophic organisms capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen (N2). However, the abundance and activity of diazotrophs can in turn be controlled by the availability of other potentially limiting nutrients, including phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe). Here we present high-resolution data (~0.3°) for dissolved iron, aluminum, and inorganic phosphorus that confirm the existence of a sharp north-south biogeochemical boundary in the surface nutrient concentrations of the (sub)tropical Atlantic Ocean. Combining satellite-based precipitation data with results from a previous study, we here demonstrate that wet deposition in the region of the intertropical convergence zone acts as the major dissolved iron source to surface waters. Moreover, corresponding observations of N2 fixation and the distribution of diazotrophic Trichodesmium spp. indicate that movement in the region of elevated dissolved iron as a result of the seasonal migration of the intertropical convergence zone drives a shift in the latitudinal distribution of diazotrophy and corresponding dissolved inorganic phosphorus depletion. These conclusions are consistent with the results of an idealized numerical model of the system. The boundary between the distinct biogeochemical systems of the (sub)tropical Atlantic thus appears to be defined by the diazotrophic response to spatial-temporal variability in external Fe inputs. Consequently, in addition to demonstrating a unique seasonal cycle forced by atmospheric nutrient inputs, we suggest that the underlying biogeochemical mechanisms would likely characterize the response of oligotrophic systems to altered environmental forcing over longer timescales. Abstract: In human exposure studies involving Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), it is useful to establish when an individual was potentially exposed. Age dating PCB exposure is complex but assessments can be made because different PCB congeners have different residence times in the human body. The less chlorinated congeners generally tend to have shorter residence times because they are biotransformed and eliminated faster than more chlorinated congeners. Therefore, the presence of high proportions of less chlorinated congeners is often indicative of recent exposure. The 2003–04 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset contains results for the concentration of 37 PCBs in a sub-sample of the US population. Multivariate statistical analysis of the NHANES data showed that less chlorinated congeners are not always biotransformed faster than higher chlorinated compounds. For example, PCB 28 (a tri-chlorobiphenyl) appears to be more resistant to biotransformation than PCB 101 and 110 (penta-chlorobiphenyls). Using statistical analysis of the NHANES data in conjunction with previously published studies on PCB persistence in humans, it was possible to identify the structural relationships that determine if a PCB is likely to be from a recent exposure (termed ‘episodic’) or from steady state exposure. Congeners with chlorine atoms in the 2,5- and 2,3,6-positions appear to be more susceptible to biotransformation whereas congeners with chlorine bonds in the 2,3,4- 2,4,5- 3,4,5- and 2,3,4,5-positions appear to be more persistent. This work shows that future investigations to date PCB exposure would benefit from the analysis of a wide range of congeners, including the selection of key congeners based not only on the degree of chlorination but also on the positions of the chlorine atoms on the biphenyl. We used a combined ion pairing - organic matter speciation model (NICA-Donnan) to predict the organic complexation of iron (Fe) at ambient pH and temperature in the Celtic Sea. We optimized our model by direct comparison with Fe speciation determined by Adsorptive Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry using the added Fe-binding ligand 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (HNN) in the presence and absence of natural organic matter. We compared determined Fe speciation with simulated titrations obtained via application of the NICA-Donnan model with four different NICA parameter sets representing a range of binding site strengths and heterogeneities. We tested the assumption that binding sites scale to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in marine waters. We found that a constant low DOC concentration resulted in an improved fit of our titration data to the simulated titrations, suggesting that inputs of autochthonous marine DOM may not increase the heterogeneity or concentrations of Fe binding sites. Using the optimal parameter set, we calculated pFe(III)´ (−log(∑ Fe (OH) i 3− i )) and apparent Fe(III) solubility (SFe(III) app) at ambient pH and temperature in the water column of the Celtic Sea. SFe(III) app was defined as the sum of aqueous inorganic Fe(III) species and Fe(III) bound to DOM formed at a free Fe (Fe3+) concentration equal to the limiting solubility of Fe hydroxide (Fe(OH) 3 (s)). SFe(III) app was within range of the determined dissolved Fe concentrations observed after winter mixing on the shelf and in waters >1500 m depth at our most offshore stations. Our study supports the hypothesis that the ocean dissolved Fe inventory is controlled by the interplay between Fe solubility and Fe binding by organic matter, although the overall number of metal binding sites in the marine environment may not be directly scalable to DOC concentrations. • We determine iron speciation in samples collected from the North-West European Shelf region. • We optimize the NICA-Donnan model for iron binding to dissolved organic matter for the study region. • We predict apparent iron solubility as the sum of soluble inorganic and organic iron species. • Predicted apparent iron solubilities are within range of observed dissolved iron concentrations in waters >500 m deep. In the northern Gulf of Alaska, mesoscale, anticyclonic eddies have been implicated as a mechanism of the cross-shelf exchange of iron (Fe)-replete coastal waters with Fe-deplete subarctic Alaskan gyre waters. Based on existing hydrography and macronutrient distributions, a Sitka eddy sampled during August 2007 is divided into a surface eddy core, a shallow subsurface eddy core, and a deeper subsurface eddy core. The distributions of aluminum (Al), manganese (Mn), and Fe in the eddy are examined and compared to distributions at shelf stations similar to where the eddy formed as well as basin stations representative of the Fe-limited subarctic Alaskan gyre. Relative to basin stations, dissolved and particulate Al and dissolved Mn were elevated in eddy core waters. Reactive Fe concentrations within the shallow subsurface eddy core were nearly seven times greater than reactive Fe concentrations at similar densities at the basin stations. This shallow subsurface eddy core is likely mixed into the euphotic zone during storm-induced mixing as well as mixing during isopycnal relaxation as an eddy dies out. The flux of reactive Fe to surface waters from the shallow subsurface core of eddies in the Gulf of Alaska is a significant source compared to both remote and local atmospheric dust deposition. It is hypothesized that Fe supply from eddies in the eastern Gulf of Alaska shifts the core of the high-nutrient, lower-than-expected chlorophyll water farther west in conjunction with an "eddy desert" in that same region. Abstract: Surface transects and vertical profiles of macronutrients, dissolved iron (D-Fe), and dissolved manganese (D-Mn) were investigated during August 2003 in the southeastern Bering Sea. We observed iron-limited, HNLC surface waters in the deep basin of the Bering Sea (15–20μmol/kg nitrate, ∼0.07nmol/kg D-Fe, and ⩽1.0nmol/kg D-Mn); nitrate-limited, iron-replete surface waters over the shelf (<0.1μmol/kg nitrate, 0.5–4nmol/kg D-Fe, and 2–33nmol/kg D-Mn); and high biomass at the shelf break (“Green Belt”), where diatoms appeared to have been stressed by low D-Fe concentrations (<0.3nmol/kg). Sources of nitrate and iron to the Green Belt were investigated. A mixture of Aleutian North Slope Current water (with elevated, but non-sufficient iron concentrations relative to its high nitrate concentrations) and surface waters from the vicinity of the Bering Canyon (with lower nitrate concentrations, but similar dissolved iron concentrations) was carried along the shelf break by the Bering Slope Current. This water mixture provided macro- and micronutrients at the southern end of the shelf break. The oceanic domain supplied additional macronutrients to Green Belt waters, while the bottom layer of the outer shelf domain supplied additional macro- and micronutrients through enhanced vertical mixing at the shelf break. Surface waters near the Pribilof Islands, where the highest surface D-Fe concentrations were observed (∼5–6nmol/kg), represent a potential source of additional iron to Green Belt waters. During summer, the subsurface water of the middle shelf domain is a potential source of nitrate to the nitrate depleted waters of the shelf. Nickel (Ni) is important for a number of enzymes in oceanic phytoplankton. It has received less attention than some other bioactive metals because it is not reduced to extremely low dissolved concentrations in the photic zone. However, there are strong indications in previous studies that this residual pool is not bio-available. Oceanic Ni isotope data are still scarce, but have great potential for understanding this issue, as well as for understanding the Ni mass balance of the oceans now and in the past. Here, we present new concentration and isotope data for the UK GEOTRACES section at 40°S in the Atlantic (GA10). Nickel concentration data show typical nutrient-like profiles, slightly modified by variable pre-formed concentrations in sub-surface water masses, e.g. North Atlantic Deep Water. Nickel isotopes, in common with findings in previous studies, are homogeneous beneath 500 m, at about +1.3‰ in δ 60 Ni, in samples with Ni concentrations above 3-3.5 nM. The surface South Atlantic, however, has concentrations below 3 nM, and shows significantly higher δ 60 Ni, up to +1.74‰, that are closely anti-correlated with Ni concentrations. The data for the deep South Atlantic dissolved pool, with a δ 60 Ni = 1.31 ± 0.12‰ (average and 2SD) confirm the homogeneity of the global deep ocean, which previous data demonstrate extends all the way to the surface in the upwelling zone of the Southern Ocean south of the Polar Front. This Ni isotope composition is significantly heavier than known inputs to the oceanic dissolved pool. This mass balance requires an isotopically light sink that may be represented by sedimentary Mn-oxide associated Ni. The magnitude of the isotope fractionation implied by the upper ocean data is not consistent with plausible potential abiotic removal processes. Rather, these data are best explained by biological uptake. However, consideration of the detailed relationships between Ni concentrations and isotope compositions requires that a substantial portion of the oceanic dissolved Ni pool is not bio-available. The data are consistent either with a small preference for the light isotope during uptake (about 0.1‰) or two distinct pools of dissolved Ni, one bio-available and one strongly bound in organic complexes, with limited isotopic exchange between them. Patterns of co-variation in Ni concentrations and isotopes with the major nutrients point to strong contrasts across the Polar Front of the Southern Ocean, contrasts that exhibit both similarities and differences with those for the major nutrients and other trace metal micronutrients. South of the Polar Front, Ni is taken up in modest amounts by diatoms, without isotope fractionation. North of the Polar Front the data are most consistent with cyanobacteria as the dominant control on Ni uptake, leading to significant coupled abundance and isotope variation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a water mass analysis along the JC150 section in the subtropical North Atlantic, based on hydrographic and nutrient data, by combining an extended optimum multiparameter analysis (OMPA) with a Lagrangian particle tracking experiment (LPTE). This combination, which was proposed for the first time, aided in better constraining the OMPA end-member choice and providing information about their trajectories. It also enabled tracing the water mass origins in surface layers, which cannot be achieved with an OMPA. The surface layers were occupied by a shallow type of Eastern South Atlantic Central Water (ESACW) with traces of the Amazon plume in the west. Western North Atlantic Central Water dominates from 100 to 500 m, while the 13 °C-ESACW contribution occurs marginally deeper (500–900 m). At approximately 700 m, Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) dominates the west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), while Mediterranean Water dominates the east with a small but non-negligible contribution down to 3500 m. Below AAIW, Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) is observed throughout section (900–1250 m). Labrador Sea Water (LSW) is found centered at 1500 m, where the LPTE highlights an eastern LSW route from the eastern North Atlantic to the eastern subtropical Atlantic, which was not previously reported. North East Atlantic Deep Water (encompassing a contribution of Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water) is centered at ~2500 m, while North West Atlantic Bottom Water (NWABW, encompassing a contribution of Denmark Strait Overflow Water) is principally localized in the west of the MAR in the range of 3500–5000 m. NWABW is also present in significant proportions (>25%) in the east of the MAR, suggesting a crossing of the MAR possibly through the Kane fracture zone. This feature has not been investigated so far. Finally, Antarctic Bottom Water is present in deep waters throughout the section, mainly in the west of the MAR. Source waters have been characterized from GEOTRACES sections, which enables estimations of trace elements and isotope transport within water masses in the subtropical North Atlantic. Trace metal micronutrients play key roles in photosynthesis by oceanic phytoplankton. Though they are required in much smaller amounts than the major nutrients (P, N, Si), their bioavailable forms are also present in the seawater solution at much lower levels. Relationships between the dissolved chemistry of the nutrient-type trace metals, their stable isotope variations, as well those of the major nutrients, have highlighted the importance of biological and physical processes in the Southern Ocean in controlling their oceanic biogeochemistry. However, the first-order Southern Ocean processes are overprinted by vertical cycling in other parts of the ocean, particularly upwelling regions remote from the Southern Ocean, with the North Pacific standing out in particular. Here we present new zinc (Zn) concentration and isotope, as well as major nutrient data for the NE Pacific, and couple these new data with a compilation of published data from across the region, with the objective of better understanding the impact of this important region on oceanic biogeochemical cycles. The new Zn isotope data for two stations along Line P (P04 and P26) show a large range in δ 66 Zn in the upper ocean (−0.4‰ up to >1‰), associated with a very small isotope fractionation but extreme depletion of the dissolved pool during photic zone biological uptake, and the regeneration of this cellular Zn at very shallow depths (50 m). Beneath this, the two profiles approach the δ 66 Zn value of +0.5‰, seen throughout the deep ocean, by about 500 m. The minimum δ 66 Zn resulting from regeneration is associated with very high Zn concentrations, particularly at the marginal P04 station where diatoms dominate the phytoplankton ecology. Combining the new data with published Zn and major nutrient concentrations from across the North Pacific emphasises the role of vertical biological cycling in controlling regional biogeochemistry in the North Pacific, resulting in the partial overprinting of biogeochemical signatures transported out of the Southern Ocean by the ocean circulation. Zinc isotope data document the uptake of this metal into diatoms and the co-regeneration of Zn with phosphate in the upper water column. Silica in contrast is regenerated at greater depth, resulting in a decoupling of the Zn–Si correlation that is set in the Southern Ocean and that dominates the Atlantic. Previous work has suggested that the decoupling of Zn and Si in the subarctic North Pacific results from removal of Zn (and other metals) to water column particulate sulphide. Primary production in the Ross Sea, one of the most productive areas in the Southern Ocean, has previously been shown to be seasonally limited by iron. In two of three bottle incubation experiments conducted in the austral summer, significantly higher chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations were measured upon the addition of iron and B12, relative to iron additions alone. Initial bacterial abundances were significantly lower in the two experiments that showed phytoplankton stimulation upon addition of B12 and iron relative to the experiment that did not show this stimulation. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the bacteria and archaea in the upper water column are an important source of B12 to marine phytoplankton. The addition of iron alone increased the growth of Phaeocystis antarctica relative to diatoms, whereas in an experiment where iron and B12 stimulated total phytoplankton growth, the diatom Pseudonitzschia subcurvata went from comprising approximately 70% of the phytoplankton community to over 90%. Cobalt additions, with and without iron, did not alter Chl a biomass relative to controls and iron additions alone in the Ross Sea. Iron and vitamin B12 plus iron treatments caused reductions in the DMSP (dimethyl sulfoniopropionate) : Chl a ratio relative to the control and B12 treatments, consistent with the notion of an antioxidant function for DMSP.
