Here we used data from six BGC-floats deployed in the southeast Pacific and southwest Atlantic Oceans, within the Southern Ocean's Subtropical Zone, to assess the seasonality of particulate organic carbon production from phytoplankton (POC phyto) and estimate POC transfer efficiencies at 100 m below the euphotic zone (T_100). While small particles <100 μM dominated the mixed layer, large particles >100 μM comprised a significant fraction of POC phyto below the mixed layer in both areas, possibly due to a "shade flora" composed by large diatoms. POC phyto was highly seasonal with highest biomass accumulation in the Atlantic side for both small and large particles. In the Pacific, the seasonal change in small particle production ΔPOC phyto was ∼66 mg m−2 versus ∼54 mg m−2 from large particles. In the Atlantic, ΔPOC phyto was ∼852 mg m−2 for small particles versus ΔPOC phyto ∼ 262 mg m−2 for large particles. Monthly T_100s in the Pacific ranged from 76% to 92% with maximum efficiencies during the deepening of the mixed layer depth. Whiting events, or waters with high concentrations of fine-grained calcium carbonate, have been previously reported in southwest Florida using three years of observations from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer. Here, the initial case study has been expanded to 13 years (2003–2015) with a statistical analysis that includes environmental data to document and understand longer term temporal and spatial variability of whiting occurrence in the same region. Annual mean whiting coverage (km2) peaked in 2011 and 2012, with the highest daily coverage in 2008 (126.0 km2). Over the time series, whiting events showed spatial variability based on distance from shore. Whiting seasonality also varied within the extended time series. Multivariate linear and non-linear regressions between mean whiting coverage (km2) and several environmental variables (wind speed, sea surface temperature, precipitation, and nearby river discharge) were performed over the entire study region as well as subregions based on spatial division from the coast line. Statistically significant correlations have been found with sea surface temperature and river discharge in subregions. These findings suggest that although observing spatial and temporal patterns of whiting events is possible with modern satellites, understanding the mechanisms regulating their initiation and maintenance is more difficult. “Whiting” in oceanography is a term used to describe a sharply defined patch of water that contains high levels of suspended, fine-grained calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ). Whitings have been reported in many oceanic and lake environments, and recently have been reported in southwest Florida coastal waters. Here, field and laboratory measurements were used to study optical, biological, and chemical properties of whiting waters off southwest Florida. No significant difference was found in chlorophyll a concentrations between whiting and outside waters (non-whiting water), but average particle backscattering coefficients in whiting waters were double those in outside waters, and remote sensing reflectance in whiting waters was higher at all wavelengths (400–700 nm). While other potential causes cannot be completely ruled out, particle composition and biochemical differences between sampled whiting water, contiguous water, and outside water indicate a biologically precipitated mode of whiting formation. Taxonomic examination of marine phytoplankton samples collected during a whiting event revealed a community dominated by autotrophic picoplankton and a small (<10 μm), centric diatom species, identified as Thalassiosira sp. through the use of scanning electron microscopy. Amorphous to fully formed crystals of CaCO 3 were observed along the girdle bands of Thalassiosira sp. cells and autotrophic picoplankton cells. The California Current System is thought to be particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification, yet pH remains chronically undersampled along this coast, limiting our ability to assess the impacts of ocean acidification. To address this observational gap, we integrated the Deep-Sea-DuraFET, a solid-state pH sensor, onto a Spray underwater glider. Over the course of a year starting in April 2019, we conducted seven missions in central California that spanned 161 glider days and >1600 dives to a maximum depth of 1000 m. The sensor accuracy was estimated to be ± 0.01 based on comparisons to discrete samples taken alongside the glider (n = 105), and the precision was ± 0.0016. CO2 partial pressure, dissolved inorganic carbon, and aragonite saturation state could be estimated from the pH data with uncertainty better than ± 2.5%, ± 8 μmol kg-1, and ± 2%, respectively. The sensor was stable to ± 0.01 for the first 9 months but exhibited a drift of 0.015 during the last mission. The drift was correctable using a piecewise linear regression based on a reference pH field at 450 m estimated from published global empirical algorithms. These algorithms require accurate O2 as inputs; thus, protocols for a simple predeployment air calibration that achieved accuracy of better than 1% were implemented. The glider observations revealed upwelling of undersaturated waters with respect to aragonite to within 5 m below the surface near Monterey Bay. The delivery of organic carbon (C) from rivers to the coastal ocean via estuaries is recognized as an important component of the global C budget however, smaller river systems are often overlooked and modern flux estimates are not very different from historical estimates. Here, the seasonal (wet vs. dry) concentration and fluxes of dissolved organic C (DOC) were measured in five small sub-tropical rivers that drain into the Tampa Bay (FL, USA) estuary. DOC distributions were highly variable among riverine, mesohaline, and marine end-member samples in all river catchments and no significant differences were observed among or between DOC concentrations with respect to river catchment, season, or year of sampling. In general, DOC mixed non-conservatively during the wet seasons, and conservatively during the dry seasons, with the estuarine reaches of each river serving as a sink of DOC. Fluxes were strongly tied to discharge irrespective of season, and the estuaries removed 15–65% of DOC prior to export to coastal Bay and Gulf of Mexico waters. DOC concentrations were similar to others reported for low-elevation sub-tropical rivers, and a combination of elevation, residence time, and climate appear to control the abundance and variability of DOC in sub-tropical vs. tropical river systems. The characterization of DOC in small, sub-tropical rivers, which share characteristics with both their temperate and tropical counterparts, is critical for quantitatively constraining the importance of these systems in local-to-regional scale ocean C budgets. In addition to geomorphic properties, the role of past, present, and future land cover and other environmental change in small coastal rivers also exerts control on the quantity and flux of DOC in these systems.
