Electronic many-body effects alone can be responsible for the migration of a positive charge created upon ionization in molecular systems. Here, we report an ultrafast charge migration taking place after valence ionization of the molecule 4-methylphenol. The results obtained by a fully ab initio methodology show that the positive charge localized initially on the methyl group can migrate to the hydroxyl group in less than 2 fs jumping over the whole aromatic ring. We study theoretically the quantum dynamics of nitrogen molecules (N2) exposed to intense and ultrafast x-rays at a wavelength of ( photon energy) from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser. Molecular rate equations are derived to describe the intertwined photoionization, decay, and dissociation processes occurring for N2. This model complements our earlier phenomenological approaches, the single-atom, symmetric-sharing, and fragmentation-matrix models of 2012 (J. Chem. Phys.136 214310). Our rate-equations are used to obtain the effective pulse energy at the sample and the time scale for the dissociation of the metastable dication . This leads to a very good agreement between the theoretically and experimentally determined ion yields and, consequently, the average charge states. The effective pulse energy is found to decrease with shortening pulse duration. This variation together with a change in the molecular fragmentation pattern and frustrated absorption—an effect that reduces absorption of x-rays due to (double) core hole formation—are the causes for the drop of the average charge state with shortening LCLS pulse duration discovered previously. Conical intersections of potential energy surfaces widely appear in molecules which consist of more than two atoms. No conical intersections exist in the case of free diatomic molecules. We show here that diatomic molecules interacting with standing laser waves produce periodic arrays of conical intersections. At these laser-induced intersections the non-adiabatic effects are infinitely strong. The translational and rovibrational molecular motions become strongly coupled to each other and energy exchange between the various degrees of freedom influences the dynamics of the system. As an illustrative example, an effect of the laser-induced conical intersections on trapping of ultracold diatomic molecules by light is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically examine neon atoms in ultrashort and intense x-rays from free electron lasers and compare our results with data from experiments conducted at the Linac Coherent Light Source. For this purpose, we treat in detail the electronic structure in all possible nonrelativistic cationic configurations using a relativistic multiconfiguration approach. The interaction with the x-rays is described in rate-equation approximation. To understand the mechanisms of the interaction, a path analysis is devised which allows us to investigate what sequences of photoionization and decay processes lead to a specific configuration and with what probability. Thereby, we uncover a connection to the mathematics of graph theory and formal languages. In detail, we study the ion yields and find that plain rate equations do not provide a satisfactory description. We need to extend the rate equations for neon to incorporate double Auger decay of a K-shell vacancy and photoionization shake off for neutral neon. Shake off is included for valence and core ionization; the former has hitherto been overlooked but has important consequences for the ion yields from an x-ray energy below the core ionization threshold. Furthermore, we predict the photon yields from xuv and x-ray fluorescence; these allow one insights into the configurations populated by the interaction with the x-rays. Finally, we discover that inaccuracies in those Auger decay widths employed in previous studies have only a minor influence on ion and photon yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We measured the fluorescence photon yield of neon upon soft x-ray ionization (∼1200 eV) from the x-ray free-electron laser at Linac Coherent Light Source, and demonstrated the usage of a grazing incidence spectrometer with a variable line spacing grating to perform x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy on a gas phase system. Our measurements also allowed us to estimate the focal size of the beam from the theoretical description developed, in terms of the rate equation approximation accounting for photoionization shake off of neutral neon and double auger decay of single core holes. Interatomic coulombic decay (ICD), a radiationless transition in weakly bonded systems, such as solutes or van der Waals bound aggregates, is an effective source for electrons of low kinetic energy. So far, the ICD processes could only be probed in ultra-high vacuum by using electron and/or ion spectroscopy. Here we show that resonant ICD processes can also be detected by measuring the subsequently emitted characteristic fluorescence radiation, which makes their study in dense media possible. In our paper we actually used a wavefunction-based nonescape probability of finding the full many-body quantum system in the desired region of the total space, rather than (as given in equation (8) of our paper) the density-based nonescape probability of finding a part of the total density in the desired region of the total space. Both quantities are of interest and provide relevant information on the system and the aproximations used. The decay and tunnelling dynamics of repulsive few-boson systems through a one-dimensional potential barrier is studied from first principles. To this end, we solve the numerically exact time-dependent few-boson Schrodinger equation by utilizing the successful multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method. Benchmark results for a wide range of interactions are reported. Deviations from the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii approach are identified. Counterintuitively, the mean-field approach can overestimate the tunnelling times even for relatively weakly-interacting few-boson systems. Implications are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
