Context. BL Lac objects are an extreme type of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that belong to the largest population of γ-ray sources: blazars. This class of AGNs shows a double-bumped spectral energy distribution that is commonly described in terms of a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission process, whereas the low-energy component that dominates their emission between the infrared and the X-ray band is tightly connected to the high-energy component that peaks in the γ-rays. Two strong connections that link radio and mid-infrared emission of blazars to the emission in the γ-ray band are well established. They constitute the basis for associating γ-ray sources with their low-energy counterparts. Aims. We searched for a possible link between X-ray and γ-ray emissions for the subclass of BL Lacs using all archival Swift/XRT observations combined with Fermi data for a selected sample of 351 sources. Methods. Analyzing ∼2400 ks of Swift/XRT observations that were carried out until December 2018, we discovered that above the γ-ray flux threshold Fγ ≈ 3 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, 96% of all Fermi BL Lacs have an X-ray counterpart that is detected with signal-to-noise ratio > 3. Results. We did not find any correlation or clear trend between X-ray and γ-ray fluxes and/or spectral shapes, but we discovered a correlation between the X-ray flux and the mid-infrared color. The article discusses a cohort study conducted to better understand the comorbidity and multimorbidity patterns in older patients with haemophilia, in order to avoid multiple medications that may increase bleeding. According to the author, haemophiliacs had more comorbidities than normal people but had less cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and overweight.

Searching for low energy counterparts of $\gamma $ -rays sources is one of the major challenges in modern $\gamma $ -ray astronomy. In the third Fermi source catalog about 30% of detected sources are unidentified/unassociated Gamma-ray Sources (UGSs). We recently started an optical spectroscopic follow up campaign to confirm the blazar-like nature of candidates counterparts of UGSs. Here we report the spectra of 61 targets collected with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR) between 2014 and the 2017. Our sample includes 33 potential counterparts of UGSs, selected on the basis of WISE colors, and 27 blazar candidates of uncertain type associated with gamma-ray sources of the last release of the Fermi catalog. We confirm the BZB nature of 20 sources lying within the positional uncertainty region of the UGSs. All the observed BCUs show blazar-like spectra, classified as 2 BZQs and 25 BZBs, for which we obtained 6 redshift estimates. Within the BCUs observations we report the redshift estimate for the BZB associated with, 3FGL J1106.4-3643 that is the second most distant BL Lac known to date, at $z \geq 1.084$ . The effect of cover plants on arthropod functional biodiversity was investigated in a vineyard in Northern Italy, through a 3-year field experiment. The following six ground cover plants were tested: Sweet Alyssum; Phacelia; Buckwheat; Faba Bean; Vetch and Oat; control. Arthropods were sampled using different techniques, including collection of leaves, vacuum sampling and sweeping net. Ground cover plant management significantly affected arthropod fauna, including beneficial groups providing ecosystem services like biological control against pests. Many beneficial groups were attracted by ground cover treatments in comparison with control, showing an aggregative numerical response in the plots managed with some of the selected plant species. Alyssum, Buckwheat and ‘Vetch and Oat’ mixture showed attractiveness on some Hymenoptera parasitoid families, which represented 72.3% of the insects collected by sweeping net and 45.7 by vacuum sampling. Phytoseiidae mites showed a significant increase on leaves of the vineyard plots managed with ground covers, in comparison with control, although they did not show any difference among the treatments. In general, the tested ground cover treatments did not increase dangerous Homoptera populations in comparison with control, with the exception of Alyssum. The potential of ground cover plant management in Italian vineyards is discussed: the overall lack of potential negative effects of the plants tested, combined with an aggregative numerical response for many beneficials, seems to show a potential for their use in Northern Italy vineyards. Background In erythropoietic protoporphyria ( EPP), an inherited disease of porphyrin-biosynthesis, the accumulation of protoporphyrin in the skin causes severely painful phototoxic reactions. Symptom prevention was impossible until recently when afamelanotide became available. Afamelanotide-induced skin pigmentation has statistically significantly improved light-tolerance, although the clinical significance of the statistical effect was unknown. Objectives To assess clinical effectiveness by recording compliance and safety during prolonged use. Methods We report longitudinal observations of 115 ambulatory patients with EPP, who were treated with a total of 1023 afamelanotide implants over a period of up to 8 years at two porphyria centres; one in Rome, Italy, and the other in Zurich, Switzerland. Results Since the treatment first became available in 2006, the number of patients treated with 16 mg afamelanotide implants rose continuously until June 2014, when 66% of all patients with EPP known to the porphyria centres were treated. Only three patients considered afamelanotide did not meet their expectations for symptom improvement; 23% discontinued the treatment for other, mostly compelling, reasons such as pregnancy or financial restrictions. The quality of life (QoL) scores, measured by an EPP-specific questionnaire, were 31 ± 24% of maximum prior to afamelanotide treatment, rose to 74% after starting afamelanotide and remained at this level during the entire observation period. Only minor adverse events attributable to afamelanotide, predominantly nausea, were recorded. Conclusion Based on the improved QoL scores, high compliance and low discontinuation rates, we conclude that afamelanotide exhibits good clinical effectiveness and good safety in EPP under long-term routine conditions. Only very few pharmacokinetic (PK) studies comparing plasma derived FVIII (pd-FVIII) against recombinant FVIII ( rFVIII) concentrates are available. The studies have been generally conducted to demonstrate the bioequivalence of a new product with an old one. The switch from a plasma-derived FVIII (pd-FVIII) to a rFVIII concentrate is a good moment to enrol the patients in a comparative PK study. To achieve information on the PK characteristics of two different classes of FVIII concentrates, according to two different designs: a 10 FVIII concentration/time point design and a reduced 4-point design. A single dose PK comparing pd- and rFVIII concentrates has been performed in four Haemophilia Centres of Italy. Seventeen haemophilia A patients underwent two subsequent single dose PK studies at the moment of switching. Two-compartment- and Non-compartment-analysis did not show significant differences between the outcomes of PK of pd-FVIII and rFVIII, due to inter-patient variability. In vivo recovery (IVR) of rFVIII was slightly higher than that of pd-FVIII and rFVIII/pd-FVIII AUC ratio was 1.37 in 11/17 patients. The difference is only due to the initial distribution phase because after the first 10 h from the end of the infusion, the two decay curves are overlapping. The elimination half-life of the concentrates was very similar even though a complete bioequivalence was not demonstrated because of a higher AUC of rFVIII concentrates, limited to the distribution phase. Histological and immunocytochemical investigations were performed on different organs (brain, duodenum and thymus) of mice following lethal (420 μg/kg) or sublethal (10 μg/kg) intraperitoneal injection of yessotoxin (YTX). No morpho-functional modifications were observed in large neurons of the cerebral and cerebellar cortex with the sub-lethal dose, nor in the cerebral cortex with the lethal dose. The duodenum also did not show significant alterations. However, there was an inflammation response to the toxin, in which blood cells and cytokines were involved. This was more evident with the lethal YTX dose. The thymus and, in general, the immune system are the main targets of YTX at both the concentrations used. Furthermore, the alterations present in the thymus may support tumorigenic implications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Swiss CD1 mice died less than 2 h after intraperitoneal injection of 420 μg/kg of algal yessotoxin (YTX). The morphological, histochemical and immunocytochemical studies performed on the cerebellar cortex revealed damage to the Purkinje cells. The main cytological alterations were observed in the cytoplasm, while less sufferance was detected in the nucleus. The immunocytochemical experiments showed an increased positivity to S100 protein while there was a decreased response to calbindin D-28K, β-tubulin and neurofilaments. These changes in intracellular Ca2+-binding proteins and the modifications in the cytoskeletal components of Purkinje cells suggest that YTX may be involved in neurological disorders. The nature of a substantial percentage (about one fifth) of hard X-ray sources discovered with the BAT instrument onboard the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (hereafter Swift) is unknown because of the lack of an identified longer-wavelength counterpart. Without such follow-up, an X-ray catalogue is of limited astrophysical value: we therefore embarked, since 2009, on a long-term project to uncover the optical properties of sources identified by Swift by using a large suite of ground-based telescopes and instruments. In this work, we continue our programme of characterization of unidentified or poorly studied hard X-ray sources by presenting the results of an optical spectroscopic campaign aimed at pinpointing and classifying the optical counterparts of 35 hard X-ray sources taken from the 70-month BAT catalogue. This sample was selected out of the available information about the chosen objects: either they are completely unidentified sources, or their association with a longer-wavelength counterpart is still ambiguous. With the use of optical spectra taken at six different telescopes we were able to identify the main spectral characteristics (continuum type, redshift, and emission or absorption lines) of the observed objects, and determined their nature. We identify and characterize a total of 41 optical candidate counterparts corresponding to 35 hard X-ray sources given that, because of positional uncertainties, multiple lower energy counterparts can sometimes be associated with higher energy detections. We discuss which ones are the actual (or at least most likely) counterparts based on our observational results. In particular, 31 sources in our sample are active galactic nuclei: 16 are classified as Type 1 (with broad and narrow emission lines) and 13 are classified as Type 2 (with narrow emission lines only); two more are BL Lac-type objects. We also identify one LINER, one starburst, and 3 elliptical galaxies. The third Fermi source catalog lists 3033 γ-ray sources above 4σ significance. More than 30% are classified as either unidentified/unassociated Gamma-ray sources (UGSs), with about 20% classified as Blazar candidates of uncertain types (BCUs). To confirm the blazar-like nature of candidate counterparts of UGSs and BCUs, we started in 2012 an optical spectroscopic follow up campaign. We report here the spectra of 36 targets with observations from the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional San Pedro Mártir, the Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory, the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Northern Optical Telescope, between 2016 and 2017. We confirm the BL Lac nature of 23 sources, and the flat spectrum radio quasar nature of other 7 ones. We also provide redshift estimates for 19 out of these 30 confirmations, with only one being a lower limit due to spectral features ascribable to intervening systems along the line of sight. As in previous analyses, the largest fraction of now-classified BCUs belong to the class of BL Lac objects, that appear to be the most elusive class of active galactic nuclei. One of the BL Lacs identified in this work, associated with 3FGL J2213.6-4755, lies at a redshift of z>1.529, making it one of the few distant gamma-ray BL Lac objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope Source Catalog (4FGL) lists over 5000 γ -ray sources with statistical significance above 4 σ . About 23% of the sources listed in this catalog are unidentified/unassociated γ -ray sources while ∼26% of the sources are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), lacking optical spectroscopic information. To probe the blazar nature of candidate counterparts of UGSs and BCUs, we started our optical spectroscopic follow up campaign in 2012, which up to date account for more than 350 observed sources. In this paper, the tenth of our campaign, we report on the spectroscopic observations of 37 sources, mostly BCUs, whose observations were carried out predominantly at the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional San Pedro Mártir and the Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory between August 2018 and September 2019. We confirm the BL Lac nature of 27 sources and the flat spectrum radio quasar nature of three sources. The remaining ones are classified as six BL Lacs galaxy-dominated and one normal galaxy. We were also able to measure the redshifts for 20 sources, including 10 BL Lacs. As in previous analyses, the largest fraction of BCUs revealed to be BL Lac objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Based on their overwhelming dominance among associated Fermi γ-ray catalogue sources, it is expected that a large fraction of the unidentified Fermi objects are blazars. Through crossmatching between the positions of unidentified γ-ray sources from the First Fermi Catalog of γ-ray sources emitting above 10 GeV (1FHL) and the ROSAT and Swift/XRT catalogues of X-ray objects and between pointed XRT observations, a sample of 36 potential associations was found in previous works with less than 15 arcsec of positional offset. One-third of them have recently been classified; the remainder, though believed to belong to the blazar class, still lack spectroscopic classifications. Aims. We study the optical spectrum of the putative counterparts of these unidentified gamma-ray sources in order to find their redshifts and to determine their nature and main spectral characteristics. Methods. An observational campaign was carried out on the putative counterparts of 13 1FHL sources using medium-resolution optical spectroscopy from the Osservatorio Astronomico di Bologna in Loiano, Italy; the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and the Nordic Optical Telescope, both in the Canary Islands, Spain; and the Observatorio Astronómico Nacional San Pedro Mártir in Baja California, Mexico. Results. We were able to classify 14 new objects based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Conclusions. Twelve new blazars were found, along with one new quasar and one new narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) to be potentially associated with the 1FHL sources of our sample. Simulating the population dynamics of a stage-structured population requires the knowledge of development, mortality and fecundity rate functions characterizing the species. In general, development and fecundity can satisfactorily be estimated starting from literature data. Unfortunately, this is often not the case for the mortality function due to the lack of experimental data. To overcome this problem, we estimate the mortality rate function from field data on the abundance of the species. The mortality is expressed as a linear combination of cubic splines and the estimation method allows to determine its coefficients taking into account the observations measurement error. Moreover, the variability in the estimate is quantified using the confidence bands for both mortality and dynamics. The presented method allows obtaining a more flexible shape for the mortality rate functions compared with previous methods applied to the same pest. The method has been applied to the case of Lobesia botrana , the main pest in the European vineyards, with abundance data collected for five consecutive years in an experimental field in the North of Italy. Data collected over three years are used to estimate the mortality and to analyse the variability in the estimate and its effects on the population dynamics, while the other two datasets are used to validate the model simulating the dynamics using the estimated mortality. • The dynamics of a population is characterized by its biodemographic functions. • An estimation method of the mortality function driven by field data is presented. • The mortality is expressed as a linear combination of cubic splines. • The method allows to obtain a flexible shape of the mortality rate function. • An application to the vineyard pest Lobesia botrana is considered. Context. A significant fraction of all γ-ray sources detected by the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi satellite is still lacking a low-energy counterpart. In addition, there is still a large population of γ-ray sources with associated low-energy counterparts that lack firm classifications. In the last 10 years we have undertaken an optical spectroscopic campaign to address the problem of unassociated or unidentified γ-ray sources (UGSs), mainly devoted to observing blazars and blazar candidates because they are the largest population of γ-ray sources associated to date. Aims. Here we describe the overall impact of our optical spectroscopic campaign on sources associated in Fermi-LAT catalogs, coupled with objects found in the literature. In the literature search we kept track of efforts by different teams that presented optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of Fermi-LAT catalog sources. Our summary includes an analysis of additional 30 newly collected optical spectra of counterparts or potential counterparts of Fermi-LAT sources of a previously unknown nature. Methods. New spectra were acquired at the Blanco 4 m and OAN-SPM 2.1 m telescopes, and those available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (data release 15) archive. Results. All new sources with optical spectra analyzed here are classified as blazars. Thanks to our campaign, altogether we discovered and classified 394 targets with an additional 123 objects collected from a literature search. We began our optical spectroscopic campaign between the release of the second and third Fermi-LAT source catalogs (2FGL and 3FGL, respectively), classified about 25% of the sources that had uncertain nature and discovered a blazar-like potential counterpart for ∼10% of UGSs listed therein. In the 4FGL catalog, about 350 Fermi-LAT sources have been classified to date thanks to our campaign. Conclusions. The most elusive class of blazars are found to be BL Lacs since the largest fraction of Fermi-LAT sources targeted in our observations showed a featureless optical spectrum. The same conclusion applied to the literature spectra. Finally, we confirm the high reliability of mid-IR color-based methods to select blazar-like candidate counterparts of unassociated or unidentified γ-ray sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Control interventions in sustainable pest management schemes are set according to the phenology and the population abundance of the pests. This information can be obtained using suitable mathematical models that describe the population dynamics based on individual life history responses to environmental conditions and resource availability. These responses are described by development, fecundity and survival rate functions, which can be estimated from laboratory experiments. If experimental data are not available, data on field population dynamics can be used for their estimation. This is the case of the extrinsic mortality term that appears in the mortality rate function due to biotic factors. We propose a Bayesian approach to estimate the probability density functions of the parameters in the extrinsic mortality rate function, starting from data on population abundance. The method investigates the time variability in the mortality parameters by comparing simulated and observed trajectories. The grape berry moth, a pest of great importance in European vineyards, has been considered as a case study. Simulated data have been considered to evaluate the convergence of the algorithm, while field data have been used to obtain estimates of the mortality for the grape berry moth. Nearly one third of the sources in the Fermi-LAT catalogs lacks a lower energy counterpart, hence being referred as unidentified/unassociated gamma-ray sources (UGSs). In order to firmly classify them, dedicated multifrequency follow-up campaigns are necessary. These will permit to unveil their nature and identify the fraction that could belong to the class of active galaxies known as blazars that is the largest population of extragalactic γ -ray sources. In Fermi-LAT catalogs there are also gamma-ray sources associated with multifrequency blazar-like objects known as Blazars Candidates of Uncertain type (i.e., BCUs) for which follow up spectroscopic campaigns are mandatory to confirm their blazar nature. Thus, in 2013 we started an optical spectroscopic campaign to identify blazar-like objects potential counterparts of UGSs and BCUs. Here we report the spectra of 31 additional targets observed as part of our follow up campaign. Thirteen of them are BCUs for which we acquired spectroscopic observations at Observatorio Astrofísico Guillermo Haro (OAGH) and at Southern Astrophysical Research Observatory (SOAR) telescopes, while the rest has been identified thanks to the archival observations available from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We confirm the blazar nature of all BCUs: three of them are in blazar of quasar type (BZQs) while the remaining ones can be spectroscopically classified as BL Lac objects (BZBs).
