In the context of energy conversion from renewable sources to distribution grids (insulated or not), a converter is often required to transfer energy from a low voltage source towards three-phase grids. This paper presents the HW design, the simulation results, and the conversion performance of a CSI converter intended to interface low-voltage renewable sources to three-phase grids. The main focus of this paper is to obtain the best performance in terms of voltage increase towards the output stage while maximizing the conversion efficiency. In comparison with the currently used energy conversion systems for small photovoltaic systems, hereafter some solutions were adopted to level and maximize the energy flow from the source to the DC-link and improve the quality of current supplied in terms of harmonic distortion. The proposed system is composed of two conversion stages: the first, voltage-to-current, the second current-to-current via a three-phase CSI bridge modulated with the SVM technique. Grid converters play a central role in renewable energy conversion. Among all inverter topologies, the current source inverter (CSI) provides many advantages and is, therefore, the focus of ongoing research. This review demonstrates how CSIs can play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless conversion of solar-generated energy with the electricity grid, thereby facilitating stable and reliable integration. This study extensively investigates various categories of single-stage CSI photovoltaic inverters, categorizing them into two-level, three-level, and multi-level architectures. Furthermore, these inverters are classified based on construction attributes, power factor, and total harmonic distortion values to assess their compliance with the standards, such as IEEE 1547 and IEC 61727. This review also delves into diverse control strategies for seamless grid integration. This comprehensive assessment serves as a resource for researchers in the field, enabling them to effectively choose the most suitable CSI for their specific applications. Cryogenic cooling is a well-established and expanding technology. In the field of electric machines, it allows the construction of more efficient machines with a high power density. The results of numerical and experimental analysis of passive magnetic bearings are presented. The proposed structure is composed of three radially stacked ring‐shaped permanent magnets. The improvements of stiffness and load capacity are proven in comparison to the classical passive magnetic bearing composed of two rings. A preliminary sensitivity analysis is carried out by means of the 2‐dimensional finite element method (FEM) modelling, which is used to provide the initial points for the stochastic optimisation and also to define the best fitness and penalty functions. Finally, the 2‐dimensional FEM is used to compare the force density and the cost of the proposed structure to those of the classical passive magnetic bearing composed of two rings. Assessing the operation of electric drives under standard operating cycles is mandatory in production lines of electric vehicles drivetrains. This article presents a technique dedicated to the performance assessment of electric powertrains for automotive applications. A numerically controlled experimental setting is developed, including a power system made up of two dc–ac converters with their ac sides connected through chokes and a control system implemented in a national instrument PCI eXtensions for instrumentation (NI PXI) hardware-in-the-loop testing system. This system emulates the dynamic behavior of the electric vehicle and of its powertrain. System analysis is used to assess the stability conditions and to calculate the current ripple and the optimal values of the chokes. The experimental emulation of automotive driving cycles in two case studies highlights the effectiveness of the developed automotive testing system. The aim of this paper is to predict the electromagnetic behavior of a permanent-magnet electric motor with a spoke rotor geometry for motorsport applications. Radial-flux spoke permanent-magnet machines are designed to achieve high torque with reduced volume and weight. However, for this type of machines, three-dimensional (3-D) rotor leakage effects are considerable and need to be assessed at the very early stage of the design process. In this study, analyses have been carried out using a new two-dimensional (2-D) modified model allowing to take into account the 3-D rotor leakage effects. The leakage has been predicted in relation to motor attributes through an easy and accessible formulation that has been validated against 3-D simulations and experimental results. Size and cost reduction are among the main issues of electric motor design and fabrication. This paper proposes an original layout for an axial flux permanent-magnet motor with printed circuit board (PCB) winding. In contrast to other axial flux motors of the same type, which are generally made with a three-phase fractional slot winding, the proposed motor has a two-phase wave winding printed on either side of the PCB. This configuration allows increasing the number of pole pairs and the supply frequency so to reduce the stator and rotor core widths. The winding is also characterized by a large copper percentage on the board, which improves the torque density of the motor. The results of the mathematical analysis, of the numerical simulation and of the experiments are compared. A method for the computation of the phase inductances is also proposed and validated. The main dimensions of the magnets are optimized via the finite-element method. This paper reports proof-of-principle of an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) operating as an electric field sensor. The system is based on a semiconductor diode laser, emitting around 1577.5 nm that interrogates the fiber sensor around its maximum reflectivity point. The application of a strong electric field causes a small variation of the optical path length of the waveguide due to electrostriction and thus perturbs the grating peak reflectivity wavelength. Calibration and dynamic range tests are performed using a parallel-plate capacitor to create a variable electric field (1–100 kV/cm). Eccentric air-gaps occur very likely in wind generators as the turbines are subject to continued mechanical stresses. This article analyzes the effects of rotor eccentricity on axial flux permanent magnet machines’ performances, such as air-gap flux density, cogging torque, and unbalanced force. In modeling axial flux machines, three–dimensional finite-element method models are required for accurate calculations. However, three-dimensional finite-element analysis is usually time consuming. In order to have a quick evaluation of the axial flux machine performance suitable for online identification, an analytical approach that utilizes quasi three-dimensional computation is developed. The proposed method allows taking into account variation of tooth skewing and different magnet shapes. The results have been validated using two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element computations. It is shown that by using the proposed analytical approach, it is possible to assess the performance of the axial flux permanent magnet generators under eccentricity with reasonable accuracy. Marine energy represents a very promising source of energy available worldwide. Although this energy is available in several forms, wave energy is the more widespread source characterized by high power density. In order to exploit energy from waves, numerous systems have been designed and commercialized. The Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter is a device based on a floating body slack-moored to the seabed, using a gyroscope as a reference frame to produce electric power. This paper describes the design of the proposed converter equipped with two linear tubular permanent-magnet generators, exploiting the reciprocating motion between the gyroscopic system and the hull to generate power. This work deals with a 10-MW doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) for direct-drive operation of wind turbines with a reduced-size converter. The work includes a lumped parameter design, an optimization procedure, a finite-element analysis (FEA), and an electrical performance assessment. A monetary cost was assumed as a cost function, and an approximation of the construction cost as a function of the axial length was obtained. The found solutions were checked by FEA in order to assure the mechanical feasibility. Further verifications were developed to allow a conclusive performance evaluation. The optimization improved the cost of the proposed DFIG, including materials, losses, and converter, making it slightly cheaper than an available permanent-magnet synchronous generator. Axial-flux permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines are suitable for direct drive applications. Axial-flux PM synchronous machines with fractional windings provide high power density, low torque ripple, and sinusoidal phase voltages, but suffer from high rotor losses due to stator field harmonics and slotting. This paper formulates an electromagnetic model based on the polar coordinate representation of the air-gap magnetic field. No-load and load tests are carried out on a soft-magnetic-composite stator axial-flux machine to validate the model. Rotor losses represent the largest loss figure in this machine. Electrical machine power density can be increased by liquid nitrogen (LN) cooling, since these machines operate at low resistivity and have a high heat transfer coefficient. This paper describes the experiments carried out on a short stroke tubular linear permanent magnet machine with copper windings and LN cooling. A cryogenic test rig for linear actuators was designed and built, and tests were carried out aimed at highlighting inherent current limiting capability, electric parameter variation in the fall from room to cryogenic temperatures, and actuator high thrust density. The behavior of fuel cells (FCs) at steady state and during transients is an important factor both for control tuning and for performance assessment. In the technical literature, few papers deal systematically with FC characterization. In this paper, the performance characterization of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) FC is carried out using an experimental analysis. The experimental activity has been conducted in a test station, properly designed and able to test PEM FC stacks in the range of 500–2000 W. The laboratory test facility is equipped with a National Instruments CompactDAQ real-time data acquisition and control system running a LabVIEW software. The bench commands two mass flow controllers, regulating both fuel flow and air flow which are commanded via two Recommended Standard 232 ports. The temperature of the FC is regulated via a fan operated by a brushless motor drive. An electronic load is connected to the FC terminals. The main operating parameters, such as the air stoichiometric ratio and fuel composition, have been varied and measured, and their influence on the PEM FC behavior has been investigated under both steady-state and transient conditions. This paper illustrates the potential and the convenience of copper-wound electrical machines with liquid nitrogen (LN) cooling. Natural convection heat exchange coefficients in LN are very high. Moreover, the resistivity of copper decreases remarkably at cryogenic temperature, subsequently reducing Joule loss in copper windings. Hence, cryogenic copper-wound electrical machines use less copper to carry the same current compared to air- or water-cooled machines, thereby improving the power-to-weight ratio. An experimental study is made of some practical issues related to the design of an LN-cooled machine using as an example the construction of a 220-N permanent magnet tubular linear actuator with a soft magnetic composite stator core. Rotor losses of axial flux permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines with fractional windings depend on stator magneto-motive force (MMF) harmonics. To reduce rotor losses, a soft magnetic composite rotor can-be used. This paper focuses on the comparison between two machines with the same soft magnetic composite stator and different rotor cores: one of solid steel and another of soft magnetic composite. The study evidenced the composite rotor improved the power density and the efficiency. This paper presents a multiphysics modeling through finite-element (FE) coupled electromagnetic and thermal field analysis of a permanent-magnet tubular linear motor (PMTLM). Two-dimensional axial-symmetric FE steady-state and transient solutions are first obtained for the magnetic-flux-density distribution, cogging force, thrust, and losses of the PMTLM prototype. The FE magnetic field results are then used for the 3-D FE thermal simulation to get the PMTLM temperature distribution. This paper proves that the multiphysics numerical field analysis is a viable tool for the design and performance optimization of PMTLMs. The accuracy of the proposed study has been assessed through prior analytical and experimental results. Regarding the design aspects, some peculiarities in the thermal behavior of PMTLMs are emphasized. This paper investigates the thermal behavior of axial flux synchronous permanent-magnet machines (AFSPMMs) through a 3-D thermal-magnetic finite-element analysis (FEA). This paper offers a systematic approach to magnetothermal FEA. The considered axial flux machine is wound on a soft magnetic compound core. The computation of thermal field is performed via a coupled thermal and fluid-dynamical model based on FEA, where the thermal sources are obtained from a dc current flow model and a magnetostatic model. The adoption of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) tapes is becoming a suitable and interesting alternative to copper for windings in transformers, thanks to the improvement in performance and the lowering of costs. Of course, optimized designs, different with respect to usual layouts, must be considered, due to the additional requirements of HTS tapes, such as minimization of orthogonal magnetic fields and consideration of additional losses in the HTS. In the framework of a scientific cooperation among some Italian Universities and private companies, a test model for a 10 KVA transformer with HTS secondary windings has been developed, and validated against a demonstrative prototype, manufactured during the project. Today, self-excited synchronous machines are the object of increasing interest because they use neither brushes nor permanent magnets. In fact, the price of rare earth metals is considerably high and still raising. This is the main reason why researchers are looking for suitable alternatives to permanent magnets in the construction of rotating electrical machinery. This paper deals with the design and laboratory testing of a synchronous machine with an efficient layout and an economic construction. The proposed self-excited machine exploits the space harmonics of the magneto-motive force to produce the excitation field. The model analysis is based on the computation of the back EMFs that are associated to the magneto motive force components. The mathematical model suggests an easy way to decouple the rotor windings. The starting and synchronization process of high-voltage permanent magnetic synchronous motors (HVPMSM) is a complex electromechanical transient problem. This paper proposes a multi-objective five-dimensional optimization method for starting characteristics of HVPMSM based on quadratic response surface models (QRSM) combined with Cuckoo search algorithm. Eighty-nine sets of transient finite element models were developed. To obtain starting current, starting time, starting torque and torque ripple, the transient process of HVPMSM is calculated with different cage bar width, cage bar depth, cage bar conductivity, and slot wedge conductivity. Steady-state and locked rotor experiments are conducted to verify the accuracy of the FEA. Then, the Cuckoo search method is employed to optimize design parameters achieved by the finite element models to obtain the minimum starting current, the maximum starting torque, the shortest starting time, and the minimum torque ripple, while maintaining high output performance and low cost. The results demonstrate that QRSM combined with Cuckoo search algorithm accurately describe the non-linear relationship between the structural characteristics, material properties and output performance of the HVPMSM. The second-generation high-temperature superconducting tapes (2G-HTS) such as the REBCO coated conductors are known for their strong mechanical properties and high current carrying capacity with low ac losses compared with first-generation HTS tapes as well as low-temperature superconductors. Therefore, they seem to be good candidates to assemble coils for superconducting rotating electric machines (SuREMs). In this article, to investigate the influence of a soft magnetic composite (SMC) material on the dc and ac HTS coil performances at cryogenic temperatures, GdBCO- and YBCO-based commercial tapes from different manufactures were used to assemble ten HTS coils in double-pancake configuration. These tapes were wound using two different core structures, i.e., fixed and movable cores, having the same circular shape but different diameters as well as materials, i.e., fiberglass and SMC. Critical currents and ac transport current losses of these coils were measured using the electrical method. To evaluate the parallel and perpendicular components of the profile of magnetic flux density for each assembled HTS coil, a finite element model has been developed using Maxwell 2D. Winding design methods have been a subject of research for many years of the past century. Many methods have been developed, each one characterized by some advantages and drawbacks. Nowadays, the star of slots is the most widespread design tool for electrical machine windings. In this context, this paper presents a simple and effective procedure to determine the distribution of the slot EMFs over the phases and of the winding configuration in all possible typologies of electrical machines equipped with symmetrical windings. The result of this procedure gives a Winding Distribution Table (WDT), which can be used to define coils and coil groups connections and also to simply implement winding optimizations techniques, such as zone widening, imbrication, etc. Moreover, this procedure can be easily implemented on a computer in order to perform automated winding designs for rotating electrical machines. This paper analyzes a novel hybrid axial-transverse flux permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor achieving high torque density. The stator pole pitch and the rotor pole pitch are the same. The motor is suitable for vehicle traction systems. The new axial-transverse machine has a single-sided or double-sided air gap. The machine has two adjacent quasi-U stator cores with ring-type winding, and the rotor has two PM groups, one outer and one inner. The shape of quasi-U stator core allows changing the flux path without changing power supply polarity. The analytical expressions of the no-load back-EMF and the torque are derived, after the development of 3-D magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model. This paper suggests a method to improve the performances of the Dual Stator Axial Flux Spoke-type Permanent Magnet (DSAFSPM) machines with phase group concentrated coil (PGCC) windings, by incorporating continuous and discrete step-skewing along with a special winding connection. The purpose of the study is to mitigate the cogging torque and torque ripples while increasing the output torque so it ameliorates the machine performance at minimum cost for various applications such as wind power plants and electric vehicles (EVs). Cogging torque produces noise and vibrations which degrade the machine's performance and reduces its life span. The proposed winding sequence enhances the output torque by improving its distribution factor along with the use of continuous skew and step-skew magnets. This research work improved the cogging torque and torque ripples with the help of skew techniques while output torque is increased by the proposed winding sequence. Further harmonics and ripples are also mitigated by the proposed winding sequence. The overall machine volume is kept constant along with the magnet size and the design parameters for fair performance analysis. Comparative analysis of these machines is performed using three-dimensional (3-D) time-stepped finite element analysis (FEA). Proposed model I and proposed model II reduce the harmonics by 42% and 23%, respectively. By using continuous skew and discrete step-skew magnets, cogging torque is reduced up to 81.5% and 75%, respectively. This reduction in cogging torque reduces the noise and vibration in machines which assists the machines to perform a smooth operation. This paper investigates a novel online method for static eccentricity (SE) fault detection of single-stator–single-rotor axial flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machines. The method allows for both estimating the SE factor and computing the minimum air-gap position. As direct flux measurements are expensive, the proposed method for fault detection is based on the measurement of the voltages of three search coils uniformly distributed in the air gap. Unlike the current spectrum-based fault detection methods on which the winding configuration has a considerable impact, the proposed method can be used for any type of AFPM machine independently on the winding layout. A simplified 2-D analytical approach is used. Moreover, a circuit-coupled 3-D finite-element method (FEM) was used to compute the induced voltages in the search coils and show the validity of the method through 20 eccentric scenarios. Moreover, an experimental setup was built to validate the analytical approach and to confirm the results achieved with the 3-D FEM. Several experimental measurements have been done. Aiming at the problem of high winding temperature caused by the large armature winding current of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for compressors, a 560 kW PMSM for a compressor was studied. The three dimensional global fluid-heat coupled heat transfer model is established and is discretized by the polyhedral mesh. The fluid and thermal coupling field of a permanent magnet motor are numerically calculated when the rotor rotation is considered. The temperature distribution characteristics of the end windings at different positions are analyzed. Further, the structure of the motor cooling system is improved. The effects of different ventilation modes on the temperature distribution of the motor are compared and analyzed. The temperature distribution of the stator windings under different armature currents is calculated. The calculation results of the end winding temperature are compared with the measured data, verifying the correctness of the calculation method. A new vector-phasor combined with an analytic method for solving complex flux distributions is proposed. The flux leakage and losses in the end region of a 1266 MW scale generator are analyzed by both finite element simulation and an analytical method. The deviation of the calculated result between the analytical model and the finite element method is very small. The analytical model can acquire current data for fast prediction of the flux density. The analytical and numerical results of the flux distribution are found to be in a satisfactory agreement. Translator eccentricity in permanent-magnet tubular machines is practically inevitable. It results in nonuniform air-gap magnetic-field distribution, which is inherently a 3-D problem. In this paper, the effects of eccentricity on field distribution and on the resulting unbalanced radial force are analyzed. Both no-load and load conditions are presented. The proposed mathematical model only requires the knowledge of the 2-D air-gap flux density distribution when the translator is at the balanced position. The analytical expression of the unbalanced radial force is derived together with the translator deformation analysis. The information of unbalanced radial forces acting on the translator and the translator displacement can be used for machine and bearing sizing. This paper studies static eccentricity (SE) fault detection in axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machines using 3-D finite-element analysis. The use of numerical modeling makes it possible to precisely study the eccentricity fault detection in these types of machines. The simulations are validated using experimental measurements. To the best knowledge of the authors, SE fault detection in AFPMs has not been studied before. Hence, a new definition for the SE factor is presented in these types of machines. A motor with different degrees of rotor eccentricity is simulated, and the back electromotive force (EMF) of all coils of the stator is obtained. In addition, an appropriate criterion has been presented for the fault detection using the back EMF of the coils. This study indicates that the back EMF of the coils of the stator is a good criterion for eccentricity fault detection. It is observed that the unbalanced back EMF suggests a method for the indirect measurement of eccentricity that could be carried out during manufacturing and assembling processes or maintenance operation. To the best awareness of the authors, effects of static eccentricity in AFPMMs have not been studied before. Hence, a new definition for the static eccentricity factor (SEF) is presented and it is shown that the occurrence of static eccentricity is very high in these types of machines. A motor with different degrees of rotor eccentricity is simulated and the flux density distribution in the air gap and the total axial force between rotor and stator is obtained. In addition, unbalanced magnetic force (UMF) is calculated and it is mentioned that a steady torque is created by the forces. This paper investigates a system-on-programmable-chip permanent-magnet synchronous-motor drive speed and position sensorless control. The proposed approach exploits two field-programmable gate-array capabilities, namely, the fast computation and the hosting of long finite-impulse response filters. Such filters allow an accurate reconstruction of the position signal by means of phase compensation and lead to an improved speed estimation based on the zero-crossing detection of the commutation signals. This paper illustrates the operation of a tubular-machine drive as a linear generator for a heave-buoy wave energy conversion. Linear generators, which are adopted in marine power plants, offer the advantage of generating without introducing any conversion crank gear or hydraulic system. The use of a tubular-machine topology allows the electromagnetic thrust density to be improved. This paper briefly summarizes the principles of marine wave buoy interaction and reports the design analysis and control of a permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous tubular linear machine based on a scaled generator prototype and on a rotating simulation test bench. The current source inverters may become direct competitors of the voltage source inverters thanks to the voltage control techniques. The paper proposes an improved voltage control technique for current source inverters, that chooses the current vectors relying on bang-bang controllers. This technique is compared to a well-established one using current space vector modulation and synchronous-frame proportional and integral controllers. The presented controller is explained and validated by means of off-line as well as real time simulations and experimental tests. The numerical results prove that the proposed control technique produces less distorted voltage waveforms in terms of total harmonic distortion and spectrum. According to the real-time simulations performed the proposed control technique is computationally less expensive than the benchmark. Aiming at the problem of end structure heating caused by the excessive eddy current loss of large synchronous condensers used in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission, combined with the actual operation characteristics of the synchronous condenser, a three-dimensional transient electromagnetic field physical model is established, and three schemes for adjusting the end structure of the condenser under rated condition are researched. The original structure has a copper shield and a steel clamping plate. Scheme 1 has no copper shield but has a steel clamping plate. Scheme 2 has no copper shield but has an aluminum clamping plate. By constructing a three-dimensional fluid–solid coupling heat transfer model in the end of the synchronous condenser, and giving the basic assumptions and boundary conditions, the eddy current loss of the structure calculated by the three schemes is applied to the end region of the synchronous condenser as the heat source, and the velocity distribution of the cooling medium and the temperature distribution of each structure under the three different schemes are obtained. In order to verify the rationality of the numerical analysis model and the effectiveness of the calculation method, the temperature of the inner edge of the copper shield in the end of the synchronous condenser is measured, and the temperature calculation results are consistent with the temperature measurement results, which provides a theoretical basis for the electromagnetic design, structural optimization, ventilation and cooling of the synchronous condenser. This work provides an investigation based on a fast estimation of the degree of unbalance ( D. U. % ) and the differential leakage factor ( σ 0 ) of multiphase electrical machine windings. This analysis is carried out by exploring almost 5000 combinations in terms of number of slots, pole pairs, phases and layers. The variability of the leakage factor is examined for each condition, defining an optimal region for its minimization. As a result, an extended mapping is carried out for both the degree of unbalance and the leakage factor, providing a useful tool during the early design stage of winding configurations for multiphase electric machines, even with slight asymmetries. The results obtained from this investigation are validated through finite element analysis and demonstrate that the differential leakage factor can be significantly reduced by adopting winding configurations with slight asymmetries, which also represent a valuable alternative in the electrical machine design. The continuous development in the field of industrial automation and electric mobility has led to the need for more efficient electrical machines with a high power density. The improvement of electrical machines' slot filling factors is one of the measures to satisfy these requirements. In recent years, this topic has aroused greater interest in the industrial sector, since the evolution of the winding technological manufacturing processes allows an economically sustainable realization of ordered winding arrangements, rather than random ones. Moreover, the manufacture of electrical machines' windings must be preceded by an accurate design phase in which it is possible to evaluate the maximum slot filling factor obtainable for a given wire shape and for its dimensions. For this purpose, this paper presents an algorithmic approach for the evaluation of maximum slot filling factors in electrical machines under an ideal geometric premise. In particular, this algorithm has a greater degree of flexibility with respect to the algorithm approaches found in the literature, since the study has been extended to round, rectangular and hexagonal wire sections. Furthermore, the slot filling factor calculation was carried out both for standard and non-standard slots. This paper presents a sizing approach dedicated to the reduction of the harmonic content of the air gap flux density of interior permanent magnet tubular-linear synchronous machines (IPM T-LSMs) based on pole shaping. The study is initiated by a formulation of the air gap flux density of conventional IPM T-LSMs equipped with flat-shaped poles. In the second step, the established model is reformulated with emphasis on the pole shape variation characterized by two parameters: the pole air gap radial width and the pole head opening. Following its experimental validation, the resulting model is applied to the sizing of the pole shape in an attempt to reduce the harmonic content of the air gap flux density. The developed sizing procedure considers the effect of the above-defined parameters on the harmonic content of both the radial and axial components of the air gap flux density. The study is achieved by the selection of a set of parameters for which both radial and axial components of the air gap flux density exhibit their lowest spatial harmonic distortion. This paper investigates the no-load and the on-load behavior of a fractional-slot tubular-linear permanent magnet synchronous machine (T-LPMSM). The study is initiated by the selection of the machine slot-pole combination. To do so, a formulation of the air gap flux density, based on the solution of the magnetic potential vector equation in the air gap and in the PM regions, is derived. The electromagnetic model allows the prediction of the phase back electromotive forces (EMFs) and of the cogging force. The effect of the slot-pole combination on these features is then considered to the aim of the optimal selection of the slot per pole and per phase. A case study considering the optimized slot per pole and per phase number is treated where the analytically predicted no-load features are validated by finite element analysis (FEA). Choosing a dc/ac converter is mainly a compromise among three major issues, namely: 1) efficiency; 2) waveform quality; and 3) cost. This paper considers a zero-current-switching (ZCS) current-source inverter (CS!) as a viable choice for many applications. !t features low conduction and switching losses, inherent output filtering, capability of withstanding short circuits, and the opportunity to use thyristors. Despite these promising characteristics, this inverter exhibits a nonlinear relationship between the modulation index and the output current. Moreover, the resonant modes that are generated by the load-filter interaction must be damped. Since the previous aspects require a proper control law, a model of the system is very useful for defining and tuning a control structure. Thus, after providing a functional overview of the ZCS dc/ac CS!, this paper formulates a large-signal model and then derives and simplifies the averaged one. Numerical data are used to validate the models that are obtained. An active damping control for a motor drive is defined and tuned by means of the simplified averaged model, and its effectiveness is numerically validated. Experimental results conclude this paper. In order to study the multiple restricted factors and parameters of the eddy current loss of generator end structures, both the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and support vector regression (SVR) are used to study and predict the mechanism of the synergistic effect of metal shield conductivity, relative permeability of clamping plates and structural characteristics of eddy current losses. Based on the eddy current losses of generator end structures under different metal shielding thicknesses and electromagnetic properties, the calculation accuracy of the MLP and SVR is compared. The prediction method gives an effective means for the complex design of the end region of the generator, which reduces the effort of the designers.
