Prognostic factors for melanoma include Breslow depth (BD), ulceration, and dermal mitotic rate (DMR). No studies have queried the effect of epidermal mitotic density (EMD) or atypical mitotic figure density (AMD) in an outcome-based assessment. Our objective was to determine if there is a relationship between EMD, AMD, BD, DMR, and ulceration and patient outcomes. This was a retrospective cohort study of 185 cases of thick and thin melanomas. Univariate and multivariate cause-specific regression analysis was performed. There was a positive correlation between EMD and BD (P =.0001). The difference between AMD in thick and thin melanomas was statistically significant. For every unit increase in EMD, patients had a 2.8-fold increase in the risk of distant metastasis; however, statistical significance was lost in the multivariate analysis. In adjusted analyses, ulceration, DMR, and BD were associated with outcomes. There were no statistically significant correlations between AMD and outcomes. This study is limited by its small sample size, diminution of the epidermis in some thick melanomas preventing EMD estimates, and reproducibility of mitotic figure counting. EMD and AMD do not seem to have any independent value in multivariate analyses for melanoma. Lupus erythematosus (LE) represents a spectrum of inflammatory autoimmune disease comprising varying clinical entities ranging from primary cutaneous to systemic disease. There is a clear relationship between ultraviolet irradiation (UVR) and the clinical manifestations of LE in both adult and pediatric populations. Although it has been established that UVR exacerbates pre-existing LE, it remains unclear whether UVR induces the development of the disease. The regulation of the interstate practice of dermatopathology, teledermatopathology and teledermatology is the subject of discussion in many recent articles. Laws and regulations in many states complicate such interstate practice, requiring the dermatopathologist to be licensed in the state where the biopsy is taken if the dermatopathologist practices in and is licensed in a different state. To date, this discussion has been from the viewpoint of the dermatopathologist or dermatologist. But, when seen from the patient's viewpoint, its apparent that most such state regulation may be void as an unconstitutional infringement of a patient's fundamental right of unrestricted interstate travel under the Constitution of the United States of America. Background With today's technology, paraffin-embedded, hematoxylin & eosin-stained pathology slides can be scanned to generate high quality virtual slides. Using proprietary software, digital images can also be annotated with arrows, circles and boxes to highlight certain diagnostic features. Previous studies assessing digital microscopy as a teaching tool did not involve the annotation of digital images. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of annotated digital pathology slides versus non-annotated digital pathology slides as a teaching tool during dermatology and pathology residencies. Methods A study group composed of 31 dermatology and pathology residents was asked to complete an online pre-quiz consisting of 20 multiple choice style questions, each associated with a static digital pathology image. After completion, participants were given access to an online tutorial composed of digitally annotated pathology slides and subsequently asked to complete a post-quiz. A control group of 12 residents completed a non-annotated version of the tutorial. Results Nearly all participants in the study group improved their quiz score, with an average improvement of 17%, versus only 3% (P = 0.005) in the control group. Invisible (or blacklight) tattoos are fast becoming the trend in the world of tattoo art, and with their rise comes the onset of associated complications. Though there have been many reports of cutaneous reactions to traditional tattoo pigments, literature regarding reactions to invisible tattoos is scarce. We report the case of a 28-year-old man who presented with an inflammatory eruption of 2 months' duration confined to the area of a recently placed invisible tattoo; the eruption was diagnosed as granulomatous dermatitis to a foreign material. Under fluorescent light, a refractile foreign material was identified in the biopsy specimen, which we believe to be melamine, one of the invisible tattoo's five ingredients. Previous cases of cutaneous reactions to invisible tattoos were attributed to polymethylmethacrylate, not a component of the tattoo in this case. To our knowledge, this is the first case implicating melamine as the cause of a granulomatous tattoo reaction. Given the rising popularity of invisible tattoos, we present this case to raise awareness of the risks associated with this alternative tattoo trend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The external ear is exposed to weathering and trauma; it also has sparse vascularity, making it prone to infection and disease. The external location of the cutaneous ear makes it easily visible for diagnosis and accessible for treatment. In this article, the authors focus on diseases of the ear that are most commonly encountered and may be subject to surgical and medical evaluation and/or treatment. Oral and topical zinc have been used for the treatment of acne, but there is a lack of definitive evidence for their efficacy. (a) To determine if mean serum zinc levels differ between acne patients and controls and (b) to determine the efficacy of zinc preparations in the treatment of acne. A systematic review and meta‐analysis was performed according to recommended PRISMA [Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses] guidelines. Subjects with acne had significantly lower serum zinc levels compared to controls. Patients who were treated with zinc had a significant improvement in mean inflammatory papule count compared to those who were not treated with zinc. There was no significant difference in the incidence of side effects in zinc supplementation vs comparators. Acne patients have decreased serum zinc levels. Zinc is effective for the treatment of acne, particularly at decreasing the number of inflammatory papules, when used as monotherapy or as an adjunctive treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
