Professionals working with people after traumatic experiences are indirectly exposed to the consequences of trauma. The aim of the study was to establish the role of spirituality and optimism in the occurrence of secondary traumatic stress and growth among 104 Polish Catholic nuns caring for people with a disability. The study used 4 standard measurement tools. A multidimensional analysis identified four types of consequences. Nuns caring for people with disabilities are as vulnerable to secondary traumatization as other professionals working with traumatized people, but they are more likely to experience positive consequences of care, and this is thanks to their spirituality. This article studies the slavery experience in the female monasteries of Santiago de Chile between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in the case of subjects of African origin. Taking the cultural history of emotions as an interpretative quadrant to examine a series of conventual and extra-conventual sources such as pastoral visits, confessional writings, records of accounts, renunciations of temporal goods and letters of freedom; the research determines the constellation of opposing emotions that traced the daily trajectory of such experience, in what way and what were its consequences in the short and medium term. Background: Breast cancer poses a significant public health challenge in Tanzania. Limited knowledge about breast cancer and negative attitudes toward screening practices contributes to delayed diagnoses and poorer patient outcomes. Catholic nuns, who are often nulliparous, represent a population with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Despite this risk, they remain an understudied group regarding breast cancer awareness and screening practices. Objective: This study aimed to assess breast cancer knowledge and attitudes toward screening practices among Catholic nuns residing in Tanzania's Lake Zone. Study design: The study was a cross-sectional design. Methods: A total of 385 Catholic nuns participated in the study. To ensure a representative sample, nuns were chosen through simple random sampling, giving each Catholic nun an equal probability of being selected. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and then analyzed using STATA version 18.0. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to draw conclusions. In inferential statistics, logistic regression was used to test for associations between categorical variables. The test statistics were considered significant when the P -value was less than.05 at a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: This study enrolled 385 catholic nuns. 57.1% (95% CI, 52.0%-62.1%) of all surveyed catholic nuns had inadequate knowledge of breast cancer. Misconceptions also emerged as significant risk factors for inadequate knowledge. Thus, lack of awareness of breast cancer risk factors increased the odds by 5.57 times (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 5.57; 95% CI: 2.84-10.92; P <.001). In addition, believing cancer was not inheritable (AOR: 2.65; 95% CI: 1.14-6.15; P =.024), misperceiving oneself as being in a low-risk group (AOR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.03-2.66; P =.039), and underestimating the vulnerable age group (believing it is not above 40 years) (AOR: 2.60; 95% CI: 1.49-4.51; P =.001) were all significantly associated with higher odds of inadequate knowledge. Regarding the attitude toward breast cancer screening practices, 62.3% (95% CI, 57.3%-67.2%) of the catholic nuns had negative attitudes. Conclusion: These findings highlight the need for breast health intervention educational programs to improve breast cancer awareness among Catholic nuns. Such programs should address risk factors, symptoms, screening methods, and treatment options, dispelling misconceptions. The rapid growth in the number of convents in the nineteenth century, and the strong links between many of these foundations and Ireland, has been noted in much scholarship. Generally the impetus in such scholarship has been to understand the expansion of congregations, and the range of their ministries. The stage before such expansion is the ‘founding’ stage: the period in which congregations were first established, and put down their roots. This stage is the subject of this article, and its aim is to interrogate the question of how women funded their first convents. In the article, we examine in detail the financial records of some of the first convents established in Ireland, that later made foundations in North America and elsewhere. In a somewhat paradoxical way - starting from the closed cloister - thanks to some verses by the nun María Gertrudis de la Cruz y Hore, I decided to take an interest in an overlooked theme of the history of Cádiz: the War of the Convention. The city --close to royalty due to its layout as a Catholic, military and maritime enclave-- seemed ideal scenario to address the conflict. Marie Hiroüin, a nun at the Hôtel-Dieu in Québec, was identified as a Scottish noblewoman in the margin of one of her community's records. An examination of how she came to be in New France, then an analysis of why the nuns at the hospital chose to emphasise her Scottishness and her nobility, offer new insights into migration, national identity, and religion in the seventeenth century. Hiroüin's family, the Irvines of Hilton, remained Catholic through Scotland's Protestant Reformation. Some family members stayed in Scotland, while others went to France, Italy, and North America. In New France, nuns commemorated the commitment of Hiroüin's family to Catholicism and alliance to Mary, Queen of Scots. This commemoration shows the long reach over both space and time of early modern British politics and religion. At a hospital in a small settlement on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, far from the centres of power in either Britain or France, nuns were using the Scottishness and nobility of Marie Hiroüin to demonstrate to themselves and their successors the virtues of their religious vocation in colonial North America. The article deal with the anti-predicative recognition proposed by Vladimir Safatle in O circuito dos afetos (2015). To illustrate this process, we start from Michel de Certeau's analysis, in A fábula mística (2015), of the storie of liminal inversion of the father figure of the abbot Pitéroum before the nun Salê, someone "without a name" and a worker in the kitchen of a monastery of 400 sisters who look down on her. Salê's simulated madness signals the impropriety of oneself as the key to a recognition distinct from that of the contract and linked to a bourgeois logic of capitalist production. This article examines relevant information from Amesbury Priory to elucidate the ways in which the priory celebrated the life of their patron saint Melor in a commemorative office. Based on Cambridge, Cambridge University Library Ee.6.16, the article examines ways in which the Amesbury telling of Melor's life differs from both other English as well as French sources. Drawing upon English breviaries that include lessons for Melor's feast day, it shows the ways in which they differ from the Amesbury material. Rather than focusing on Melor's wounding and prosthetic hand and foot, the Amesbury commemorative office emphasises the role of the one female character in the story in the days leading to Melor's death. The article includes a transcription the breviary sources, and the commemorative office in CUL Ee.6.16 as well as material from two fragmentary breviaries associated with the priory. A biography of Catholic nun Felicija Nijolė Sadūnaitė is presented. Sūdunaitė was born on July 22, 1938 in Kaunas, Lithuania to Veronika Rimkute-Saduniene and Jonas Sadunas. She was not allowed to pursue university studies in physical because she would not renounce her belief in God. She was arrested for duplicating and distributing the "Kronika" in August 1974 and was sentenced to three years in prison. Her contribution to Catholic print culture is noted.

The first English translation of Lettres portugaises was published in 1678 as Five Love-Letters from a Nun to a Cavalier. Capitalising on its literary success, the nun’s letters were extended and revised in two sequels. Their influence on women’s autochthonous fiction was strong in the years that followed. I will first focus on the history of the English reception of these French works to concentrate afterwards on two texts: Aphra Behn’s Love-Letters between a Nobleman and His Sister (1684-85) and Delarivier Manley’s Letters (1696). Whereas the former questions the veracity of the love letter by exploring the artificiality of love discourses and their dangerous effects on women’s lives, the latter recrafts the tradition of the female complaint by choosing a protagonist who voices her lament on the run. The reproducibility of the nun’s model makes us read Portuguese Letters not merely as the expression of unbidden emotion, but as a letter manual that could be revised and adapted. A cross-sectional survey among religious brothers and sisters (n = 250) with their specific lifestyle and related spiritual practices stated moments of awe perceptions. They responded to both the Awe/Gratitude scale and to free text fields to substantiate their quantitative responses. Qualitative content analysis of their free text responses resulted in six main categories of awe triggers: (1) Nature, (2) Special Moments, (3) Transcendence Perceptions, (4) Religious practices, (5) Distinct People, and (6) Aesthetics, Art and Culture. Awe perceptions can be an immediate feeling and the outcome of a process of reflection in response to admiration, inspiration, and elevation. As these perceptions are related to psychological well-being and prosocial behaviors, their training can generate positive effects on quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dreaming plays a part in many of the world's religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism Christianity, and Islam. However, research into what the actual dreams of religious persons look like is very rare. Within a series of 2,055 dreams recorded over more than 30 years by a Benedictine nun, the frequency and content of church dreams were analyzed. The church dream frequency (11%) was high compared to other samples. The findings indicate that the daily religious practices of the dreamer as a nun is reflected in her dreams, with the most frequent church being "her" church and the most frequent activity related to the church being religious (praying, singing, a church service). Interestingly, the nun's dreams also included profound religious dreams of inner liberation, insights, and positive feelings. It would be interesting to study the beneficial effects of dreams in other persons who have dedicated their lives to religious practice, whether within Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, or any other faith. This article discusses oral history sources that give insight into how a specific group of teaching sisters (also known as nuns or women religious) reflect on their primary identity as vowed women, and their professional identity as teachers. Their identity was bound up with the fact that they had taken religious vows, and entered a congregation with a clear charism or identity of its own, and they each had their own understanding of vocation. The article also considers the different ways in which they became involved in education; some did not chose to become teachers, while others had a clear desire to teach. The article presents a decree from the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura regarding the expulsion of a nun. After several attempts at admonishment, the nun was expelled in March 2002 without being notified of the reason. The convent in Early Modern Italy functioned as a uniquely queer space, denying women heteronormative lives while producing homosocial, virginal communities. As nuns wove together the dual acts of listening and vocalizing, they built queer sonic environments that were the site of massive power struggles between male church officials, the bodies of women religious, and the wealthy families of Italy. Connecting voice studies, feminist and queer musicology, sound studies, and nun studies to explore new ways of approaching convent musicking, the author examines Lucrezia Orsina Vizzana's 'O magnum mysterium' to illuminate the possibilities of women's agency and queerly inflected performance. Defining successful aging continues to be a challenge, given the more recent transition from a bioscientific definition to a more comprehensive and holistic perspective. The holistic perspective may include more subjective aspects of aging. Research has shown that certain factors, such as lifestyle practices of spirituality, religious practice, meditation, communal support, and purposeful living, may be as influential as genetic factors in helping aging adults diminish age-related limitations. Spirituality and religiosity as lifestyle practice resources may assist older adults to mitigate the circumstances of chronic disease and positively impact aging, life quality, and well-being. Religious and/or spiritual communities, such as Women Religious and other clergy and monks, may provide insight into specific practices that promote social exchanges, life meaning, meditative practice, daily prayer, belief in the divine, communal living, and homogeneity of lifestyle that ultimately promote successful aging and resiliency into older age. Research has shown that lifestyle factors may mitigate diseases such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia in older age. The population of older adults has grown consistently on a global level since the turn of the century. This article review seeks to examine aging and emphasize, through research, which lifestyle practices and communities may impact the experience of aging in a more beneficial manner. This study aims to determine the communication behavior of children with Down syndrome at the Bakti Luhur Kupang orphanage. The role of nuns in caring for and educating children with Down syndrome is different from children with Down syndrome who are cared for directly by their parents. This research uses qualitative research methods with interviews, observation, and documentation data collection techniques. The research results also show that the role of nuns as caregivers in increasing the independence of children with Down syndrome at the Bakti Luhur orphanage is to educate, guide, develop, motivate, be role models, advise, and train children. The research results also show that the independence of children with Down syndrome increases in the aspects of self-help and self-care and general independence in daily living skills. Phosphor‐zentrierte Disbiradikale, in denen die Radikalzentren als einzelne Spin‐Dubletts mit schwacher Spin‐Spin‐Wechselwirkung vorliegen, waren bisher nicht bekannt. Ausgehend von Monoradikalen des Typs [⋅P(μ‐NTer)2P−R] ist es uns nun gelungen, zwei monoradikalische Phosphorzentren durch geeignete Wahl eines Linkers zu verknüpfen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde das Biradikal [⋅P(μ‐NTer)2P⋅] (1) mit 1,6‐Dibromhexan umgesetzt, wodurch die bromierte Spezies {Br[P(μ‐NTer)]2}2C6H12 (3) entstand. Die anschließende Reduktion mit KC8 führte zur Bildung des Disbiradikals {⋅[P(μ‐NTer)]2}2C6H12 (4), das sich durch einen großen Abstand zwischen den radikalischen Phosphorzentren im Festkörper auszeichnet und mit annähernd 100 % den bisher höchsten Biradikalcharakter in einem P‐zentrierten Biradikal aufweist. Die EPR‐spektroskopische Untersuchung ergab ein Drei‐Linien‐Signal in Lösung mit einer erheblich größeren Austauschwechselwirkung als es aufgrund der Molekülstruktur im Einkristall zu erwarten wäre. Quantenchemische Berechnungen ergaben einen hochdynamischen Konformationsraum; demnach können sich die beiden Radikalstellen in Lösung mit einem viel geringeren Abstand einander nähern. Die weitere Reduktion von 4 führte zur Bildung eines Kaliumsalzes mit dem ersten strukturell charakterisierten P‐zentrierten distonischen Radikalanion (5−). The article addresses violence against nuns, given that the gendered nature of this violence affects all women, irrespective of their status, role or duty within the Church. The first chapter presents testimonies and the research aimed at de-tabooing the topic of violence against nuns. The second chapter examines structural and spiritual violence, as these forms of violence underpin and frame all other forms of violence and are crucial for comprehensive understanding of violence against nuns. The third and fourth chapters discuss the types and manifestations of violence in women's religious communities as well as clerical violence against nuns. The conclusion identifies specific problems, such as power asymmetry between clergy and laity, between men and women and between leaders and community members. It also addresses the needs for limiting the terms of office and prohibition of holding concurrent leadership positions. In the context of the Catholic Church in Croatia, the aim of the article is to initiate the de-tabooing and encourage research to develop prevention programs and support victims of violence. In this article, I contextualise and explain the restriction of what I term 'trans potential' in later hagiography on the Spanish visionary abbess Mother Juana de la Cruz (1481–1534). The first written work on Juana included a functionally transmasculine narrative (Juana passed briefly as a man) and a functionally transfeminine narrative (God miraculously feminised the previously male Juana prior to her birth, leaving her with an Adam's apple). In later works, the transmasculine narrative appears significantly modified, and the transfeminine narrative does not appear at all. In Michel de Certeau's Invention of the Everyday, improvisational community dance function as a catalyst for the subversive art of the oppressed, via its ancient Greek virtue/power of mētis, being "foxlike." And in de Certeau's The Possession of Loudun, this foxlike dance moves to the stage, as an improv chorus that disrupts the events at Loudon when reimagined as a tetralogy of plays at City Dionysia. More precisely, Loudun's tetralogy could be interpreted as a series of three tragedies and one comedy, the latter of which involves the chorine nuns' channeling of anomie into a proto-feminist transfiguration. More precisely, the tactical prowess of the nuns' chorus leader, namely the prioress Jeanne des Anges, elevates her to the status of an angelic prophet, which in de Certeau's theatrical dancing critique makes her the Loudun tetralogy's Dionysian, foxlike mage. Leonor de Lencastre was the wife of King João II of Portugal and the sister of his successor, Manuel I. Both she and her mother Beatriz participated in high politics and the government of the realm, administered vast territories, and managed considerable fortunes. They also founded convents of Poor Clares –one of Colettines, the other of Observants of the First Rule– where they chose to be buried in graves dug into the ground covered by stone slabs over which the nuns passed in their daily tasks as a sign of humility. In this article, I analyse the demanding religious practice and pious works of Leonor and Beatriz which inspired other women of their entourage, including Leonor's sister Isabel and Justa Rodrigues. The exemplary dedication of Leonor and Beatriz led these other women to found female religious houses or join those founded by them, and to lead austere lives that contrasted with their privileged social origins. This demanding practice was not shared by all, however, and I also analyse the case of Isabel de Sousa, another noblewoman of Beatriz's household, who opted for a different way to be commemorated and attain salvation. Anastomotic leakage (AL) remains the main cause of post-esophagectomy morbidity and mortality. Early detection can avoid sepsis and reduce morbidity and mortality. This study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of the Nun score and its components as early detectors of AL. This single-center observational cohort study included all esophagectomies from 2010 to 2020. C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin (Alb), and white cell count (WCC) were analyzed and NUn scores were calculated. The area under the curve statistic (AUC) was used to assess their predictive accuracy. A total of 74 of the 668 patients (11%) developed an AL. CRP and the NUn-score proved to be good diagnostic accuracy tests on postoperative day (POD) 2 (CRP AUC: 0.859; NUn score AUC: 0.869) and POD 4 (CRP AUC: 0.924; NUn score AUC: 0.948). A 182 mg/L CRP cut-off on POD 4 yielded a 87% sensitivity, 88% specificity, a negative predictive value (NPV) of 98%, and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 47.7%. A NUn score cut-off > 10 resulted in 92% sensitivity, 95% specificity, 99% NPV, and 68% PPV. Albumin and WCC have limited value in the detection of post-esophagectomy AL. Elevated CRP and a high NUn score on POD 4 provide high accuracy in predicting AL after esophageal cancer surgery. I conduct a research titled “The Invisible Labor of the Church: Orthodox and Catholic Nuns in Turkey” for a long time. Since it has become part of my life both for my study and because of staying in the monastery with the nuns from time to time, my visits are still continuing. The fieldwork conducted within the scope of this doctoral thesis actually began in August 2019. Since July 2023, I have been regularly visiting the monastery in Northern Greece. However, over the past nine months, I have visited the monastery four times―in July, September, December 2023, and March 2024―and stayed there with the nuns for about over a month in total. Language was a significant factor in my fieldwork because I had no knowledge of Greek, which made communication challenging. However, with the help of acquaintances who spoke English and Turkish, the use of Google Translate, the ability of the nuns to speak Turkish and English, and their efforts to teach me Greek, we gradually began to overcome this issue. Each of my visits to the monastery has, of course, created many unique experiences that cannot be fit in this small space this article has. In addition, what I am going to evaluating as a field grade is also, for sure, quite variable. That’s why, I am going to describe my travels from the day I was invited to the monastery until now, trying to focus on the most prominent ones. As someone who has been to a women’s monastery to stay before, I will try to talk about what I felt when I went there, what I could and/or could not tell others about how it made me feel, what topics I think have changed and the emotional bond that has developed between me and the nuns over time. With that, I am going to share how I started to get used to the monastery as I continued visiting, which I left almost fleeing because of the claustrophobic feelings I felt the first time I visited. Thus, with a feminist, anti-positivist approach, it needs to be accepted that it is inevitable for an anthropologist conducting fieldwork ‘from the bottom up’ to change during the research process. At the end of the 17th century, the community of Sancti Spiritus de Puente la Reina (Navarra) was altered by the development of a criminal process against the community's perpetual vicar. His arrival prompted changes that affected the daily lives of these nuns and generated factions and internal instability. The study of this process allows us to analyse the power dynamics that converged, evolved and manoeuvred in a context of tension. Also, it provides information about the possible motivations of the opposing parties and the resources they used to defend their own objectives. Apparently, due to inadequacy of spiritual relationships, a faction of the community denounced these shortcomings. The document studies the development of female religious movements in Germany in the 12th and 13th centuries, focusing on the Vitae Sororum of Unterlinden compiled by Catherine de Gueberschwihr around 1320. These hagiographic accounts highlight the spiritual journey of the nuns towards human perfection and eternal salvation, emphasizing the importance of affiliation with the Dominican order and the spiritual autonomy of the nuns. Ascetic practices and collaboration with the preaching brothers illustrate their quest for spiritual perfection within the framework of orthodoxy, marked by a direct and intimate relationship with the divine. Maria Micaela de São Bernardo, an 18th century nun from the São Dinis and São Bernardo of Odivelas monastery, wrote a very interesting piece. In this account addressed to her spiritual director, her mystical universe is revealed, embodied by an intimate and deeply affective relationship with God. One of the recurring topoi of her spirituality concerns the relationship between the inner senses and the outer senses which, as will be seen, is formulated in a particular way that gives rise to a dichotomy that is, after all, only apparent. This article studies the reception of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in nineteenth- century Spanish press, based on news and biographies published therein. Focusing on the biography and engraving of the author published in Semanario pintoresco español, a popular magazine of the time, we analyze how she is represented, which qualities are highlighted when offering readers her image as a literary figure, and which ones are omitted. This study also proposes to show the transformations occurring in the literary world during those years and how literary history, through the construction of the authorial image of the nun, (re)evaluates the past, organizes it, and relates it to the patterns of its time. The analysis consists of three segments: the main elements constituting Sor Juana's biography, the critique of her literary production, and her place in the literary canon as a woman from the nineteenth-century perspective. In this article we collect the first data elaborated from the Moncat database that gathers data of 9,800 religious who professed between 1850 and 1936 from a systematic emptying of the population registers of Catalonia. From these data we reconstruct the geography of the origin of nuns in Catalonia, the relationship between origin and congregations, the origin of the nuns according to whether they were cities with or without a diocese and the average length of stay in the convents. Arylglycine sind wichtige Pharmakophore, die in mehreren umsatzstarken Medikamenten enthalten sind. Diese Verbindungsklasse wurde nun durch eine Pd‐katalysierte Schöllkopf‐ähnliche Aminosäuresynthese aus reichlich vorhandenen Arylchloriden zugänglich gemacht. In Gegenwart des Katalysators Methylnaphthyl(XPhos)‐Palladiumbromid, der Base Lithium‐2,2,6,6‐Tetramethylpyrrolididid und des Additivs ZnCl2 wurden von tert‐Leucin abgeleitete Bislactimether bei Raumtemperatur effizient aryliert, wobei Ausbeuten von 95 % und Diastereoselektivitäten von 98 : 2 erreicht wurden. Die Erweiterung der chemischen Vielfalt von Peptid‐Makrozyklenbibliotheken für die Display‐Selektion ist wünschenswert, um ihr Potenzial zur Bindung an biomolekulare Ziele zu verbessern. Wir haben nun eine erhebliche Erweiterung durch die Einbeziehung eines großen, aromatischen helikalen Foldamers umgesetzt. Es wurde ein helikales aromatisches Foldamer identifiziert, welches eine Flexizym‐vermittelte tRNA‐Acylierung durchläuft und in der Lage ist, die ribosomale Translation mit Ausbeuten durchzuführen, die ausreichend hoch sind, um eine mRNA‐Display‐Selektion von makrozyklischen‐Foldamer‐Peptid‐Hybriden zu vollziehen. Ein hybrider Makrozyklus mit nanomolarer Affinität an C‐lobe der E6AP HECT‐Domäne wurde ausgewählt, der eine stark konvergente Peptidsequenz aufwies. Eine Kristallstruktur und Moleküldynamik‐Simulationen haben gezeigt, dass sowohl das Peptid als auch das Foldamer in einer faszinierenden, reziproken Heftklammer‐artigen Art helikal sind. Die starke Konvergenz der Reste könnte durch ihre Beteiligung an spezifischen Wechselwirkungen mit dem Zielprotein erklärt werden. Das Foldamer stabilisiert die Peptidhelix durch Heftklammern und durch Kontakte mit wesentlichen Resten. Diese Ergebnisse stellen insgesamt eine erhebliche Erweiterung des chemischen Raums dar, der für die Display‐Selektion zur Verfügung steht, und unterstreichen die möglichen Vorteile des Einfügens eines aromatischen Foldamers in einen Peptidmakrozyklus zum Zwecke der Proteinerkennung.
