Purpose: In addition to incisional hernia, inguinal hernia is a recognized complication to radical retropubic prostatectomy. To compare the risk of developing inguinal and incisional hernias after open radical prostatectomy compared to robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. Method: Patients planned for prostatectomy were enrolled in the prospective, controlled LAPPRO trial between September 2008 and November 2011 at 14 hospitals in Sweden. Information regarding patient characteristics, operative techniques and occurrence of postoperative inguinal and incisional hernia were retrieved using six clinical record forms and four validated questionnaires. Results: 3447 patients operated with radical prostatectomy were analyzed. Within 24 months, 262 patients developed an inguinal hernia, 189 (7.3%) after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy and 73 (8.4%) after open radical prostatectomy. The relative risk of having an inguinal hernia after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy was 18% lower compared to open radical retropubic prostatectomy, a non-significant difference. Risk factors for developing an inguinal hernia after prostatectomy were increased age, low BMI and previous hernia repair. The incidence of incisional hernia was low regardless of surgical technique. Limitations are the non-randomised setting. Conclusions: We found no difference in incidence of inguinal hernia after open retropubic and robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. The low incidence of incisional hernia after both procedures did not allow for statistical analysis. Risk factors for developing an inguinal hernia after prostatectomy were increased age and BMI. We calculate the momentum flux and pressure of ions measured by the Ion Composition Analyzer (ICA) on the Rosetta mission at comet 67P/Churyumov‐Gerasimenko. The total momentum flux stays roughly constant over the mission, but the contributions of different ion populations change depending on heliocentric distance. The magnetic pressure, calculated from Rosetta magnetometer measurements, roughly corresponds with the cometary ion momentum flux. When the spacecraft enters the solar wind ion cavity, the solar wind fluxes drop drastically, while the cometary momentum flux becomes roughly 10 times the solar wind fluxes outside of the ion cavity, indicating that pickup ions behave similarly to the solar wind ions in this region. We use electron density from the Langmuir probe to calculate the electron pressure, which is particularly important close to the comet nucleus where flow changes from antisunward to radially outward. Plain Language Summary: To understand the atmosphere of a comet, we must understand how its charged particles interact with the solar wind. Here we look at momentum flux, the amount of momentum carried by particles flowing through a certain area, measured at the comet 67P/Churyumov‐Gerasimenko by the Rosetta spacecraft. We find that the total momentum flux changes the amount we would expect from the comet getting closer to the Sun. When in the part of the atmosphere with no solar wind, the ions coming from the comet have more momentum flux than the solar wind ions elsewhere in the comet atmosphere. The increase matches what we expect from the comet getting closer to the Sun, which increases the total density of the comet atmosphere. The cometary ions replace the solar wind ions in the atmosphere, so the total stays the same. The magnetic field varies with the cometary ions. We find electron pressure with measured electron data. It is higher than the momentum flux, especially in the part of the atmosphere close to the comet nucleus. This means that the atmosphere here is primarily moving outward from the comet, while farther away from the nucleus it is mainly flowing away from the Sun. A full band Monte Carlo study of the electron transport in 3C-SiC is presented based on an ab initio band structure calculation using the local density approximation to the density functional theory. The scattering rates and impact ionization transition rates have been calculated numerically from the ab initio band structure using both energy dispersion and numerical wave functions. This approach reduces the number of empirical parameters needed to a minimum. The two empirical coupling constants used have been deduced by fitting the simulated mobility as a function of lattice temperature to experimental data. The peak velocity was found to be approximately 2.2 × 10[sup 7] cm/s with a clear negative differential mobility above 600 kV/cm. The electron initiated impact ionization coefficients were found to be 2-10 times stronger than the reported values for the hole initiated impact ionization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A full-band ensemble Monte Carlo simulation has been used to study the high-field carrier transport properties of 4H-SiC. The complicated band structure of 4H-SiC requires the consideration of band-to-band tunneling at high electric fields. We have used two models for the band-to-band tunneling; one is based on the overlap test and the other on the solution of the multiband Schrödinger equations. The latter simulations have only been performed for holes in the c-axis direction, since the computer capacity requirement are exceedingly high. Impact-ionization transition rates and phonon scattering rates have been calculated numerically directly from the full band structure. Coupling constants for the phonon interaction have been deduced by fitting of the simulated low-field mobility as a function of lattice temperature to experimental data. Secondary hot electrons generated as a consequence of hole-initiated impact ionization are considered in the study for both models of band-to-band tunneling. When the multiband Schrödinger equation model is used for holes in the c-axis direction, a significant change in the electron energy distribution is found, since the hole impact-ionization rate is very much increased with this model. The secondary electrons increase the average energy of the electron distribution leading to a significant increase in the electron-initiated impact-ionization coefficients. Aims. We have measured and calculated lifetimes of high lying levels in Nb II, and derived absolute transition probabilities by combining the lifetimes with experimental branching fractions. Methods. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence in a two-photon and two-step excitation scheme. The branching fractions were measured in intensity calibrated spectra from a hollow cathode discharge, recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer. The calculations were performed with the relativistic Hartree–Fock method including core polarization. Results. We report experimental lifetimes of 13 levels in the 4d3(4F)5d and 4d3(4F)6s subconfigurations, at an energy around 70 000 cm−1. By combining the lifetimes with experimental branching fractions absolute transition probabilities of 59 lines are derived. The experimental results are compared with calculated values. Context. On 20 January 2015 the Rosetta spacecraft was at a heliocentric distance of 2.5AU, accompanying comet 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko on its journey toward the Sun. The Ion Composition Analyser (RPC-ICA), other instruments of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium, and the ROSINA instrument made observations relevant to the generation of plasma waves in the cometary environment. Aims. Observations of plasma waves by the Rosetta Plasma Consortium Langmuir probe (RPC-LAP) can be explained by dispersion relations calculated based on measurements of ions by the Rosetta Plasma Consortium Ion Composition Analyser (RPC-ICA), and this gives insight into the relationship between plasma phenomena and the neutral coma, which is observed by the Comet Pressure Sensor of the Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis instrument (ROSINA-COPS). Methods. We use the simple pole expansion technique to compute dispersion relations for waves on ion timescales based on the observed ion distribution functions. These dispersion relations are then compared to the waves that are observed. Data from the instruments RPC-LAP, RPC-ICA and the mutual impedance probe (RPC-MIP) are compared to find the best estimate of the plasma density. Results. We find that ion acoustic waves are present in the plasma at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, where the major ion species is H2O+. The bulk of the ion distribution is cold, kBTi = 0:01 eV when the ion acoustic waves are observed. At times when the neutral density is high, ions are heated through acceleration by the solar wind electric field and scattered in collisions with the neutrals. This process heats the ions to about 1 eV, which leads to significant damping of the ion acoustic waves. Conclusions. In conclusion, we show that ion acoustic waves appear in the H2O+ plasmas at comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and how the interaction between the neutral and ion populations effects the wave properties. A meta-analysis of the effect of body and air movement on the insulation provided by workwear and cold-weather clothing [1.22 clo (0.189 m2 degrees C W(-1)) < I(T)<4.14 clo (0.642 m2 degrees C W(-1))] using data from different sources was performed. For the effect of walking, datasets could be merged and a single prediction equation produced (r2=0.91). For the effect of wind, and interaction of movement and wind, separate equations were required for regular workwear (r2 = 0.93) and cold-weather clothing (r2 = 0.97). Differences were mainly due to the different amounts of nude surface area. An interaction between wind and walking effects was present (the size of the combined effects is less than the sum of the separate effects), and for cold-weather clothing an effect of clothing air permeability (p) was present (high p --> bigger effect). The resulting prediction equations will be proposed for inclusion in European and ISO standards on protective clothing to assist the user in determining the real-life clothing insulation value. Purpose: To analyze severe complications after groin hernia repair with respect to age, ASA score, hernia anatomy, method of repair and method of anesthesia, using nationwide registers. The annual rate of 20 million groin hernia operations throughout the world renders severe complications, although rare, important both for the patient, the clinician, and the health economist.Methods: Two nationwide registers, the Swedish Hernia Register and the National Swedish Patient Register were linked to find intraoperative complications, severe cardiovascular events and severe surgical adverse events within 30 days of groin hernia surgery.Results: 143,042 patients, 8 % women and 92 % men, were registered between 2002 and 2011. Intraoperative complications occurred in 801 repair, 592 patients suffered from cardiovascular events and 284 patients from a severe surgical event within 30 days of groin hernia surgery. Emergency operation was a risk factor for both cardiovascular and severe surgical adverse events with odds ratios for cardiovascular events of 3.1 (2.5-4.0) for men and 2.8 (1.4-5.5) for women. Regional anesthesia was associated with an increase in cardiovascular morbidity compared with local anesthesia, odds ratio 1.4 (1.1-1.9). In men, bilateral hernia and sliding hernia approximately doubled the risk for severe surgical events; odds ratio 1.9 (1.1-3.5) and 2.2 (1.6-3.0), respectively. Methods other than open anterior mesh repair increased the risk for surgical complications.Conclusions: Awareness of the increased risk for cardiovascular or surgical complications associated with emergency surgery, bilateral hernia, sliding hernia, and regional anesthesia may enable the surgeon to further reduce their incidence. Aims. The aim of this study is to provide radiative data for neutral and singly ionised silicon, in particular for the first experimental oscillator strengths for near-infrared Si I lines. In addition, we aim to perform atomic structure calculations both for neutral and singly ionised silicon while including lines from highly excited levels. Methods. We performed large-scale atomic structure calculations with the relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method using the GRASP2K package to determine log(푔ƒ) values of Si I and Si II lines, taking into account valence-valence and core-valence electron correlation. In addition, we derived oscillator strengths of near-infrared Si I lines by combining the experimental branching fractions with radiative lifetimes from our calculations. The silicon plasma was obtained from a hollow cathode discharge lamp, and the intensity-calibrated high-resolution spectra between 1037 and 2655 nm were recorded by a Fourier transform spectrometer. Results. We provide an extensive set of accurate experimental and theoretical log(푔ƒ) values. For the first time, we derived 17 log(푔ƒ) values of Si I lines in the infrared from experimental measurements. We report data for 1500 Si I lines and 500 Si II lines. The experimental uncertainties of our ƒ-values vary between 5% for the strong lines and 25% for the weak lines. The theoretical log(푔ƒ) values for Si I lines in the range 161 nm to 6340 nm agree very well with the experimental values of this study and complete the missing transitions involving levels up to 3s23p7s (61 970 cm−1). In addition, we provide accurate calculated log(푔ƒ) values of Si II lines from the levels up to 3s27f (122 483 cm−1) in the range 81 nm to 7324 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report lifetime measurements of the 6 levels in the 3d6(5D)4d e6G term in Fe II at an energy of 10.4 eV, and f-values for 14 transitions from the investigated levels. The lifetimes were measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence on ions in a laser-produced plasma. The high excitation energy, and the fact that the levels have the same parity as the the low-lying states directly populated in the plasma, necessitated the use of a two-photon excitation scheme. The probability for this process is greatly enhanced by the presence of the 3d6(5D)4p z6F levels at roughly half the energy difference. The f-values are obtained by combining the experimental lifetimes with branching fractions derived using relative intensities from a hollow cathode discharge lamp recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer. Recent studies have shown that the escape of oxygen ions (O+) into the magnetosheath along open magnetic field lines from the terrestrial cusp and mantle is significant. We present a study of how O+ transport in the dayside magnetosheath depends on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) direction. There are clear asymmetries in the O+ flows for southward and northward IMF. The asymmetries can be understood in terms of the different magnetic topologies that arise due to differences in the location of the reconnection site, which depends on the IMF direction. During southward IMF, most of the observed magnetosheath O+ is transported downstream. In contrast, for northward IMF we observe O+ flowing both downstream and equatorward towards the opposite hemisphere.We observe evidence of dual-lobe reconnection occasionally taking place during strong northward IMF conditions, a mechanism that may trap O+ and bring it back into the magnetosphere. Its effect on the overall escape is however small: we estimate the upper limit of trapped O+ to be 5 %, a small number considering that ion flux calculations are rough estimates. The total O+ escape flux is higher by about a factor of 2 during times of southward IMF, in agreement with earlier studies of O+ cusp outflow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topics discussed include driving of movement of hydrogen ions across the plasma membrane by the sodium gradient, a hydrogen-ion combined by bicarbonate inside a cell, and decrease in sodium concentration of the extracellular space as it is not replenished from the blood.

Higher order moments, e.g., perpendicular and parallel heat fluxes, are related to non-Maxwellian plasma distributions. Such distributions are common when the plasma environment is not collision dominated. In the polar wind and auroral regions, the ion outflow is collisionless at altitudes above about 1.2 RE geocentric. In these regions wave–particle interaction is the primary acceleration mechanism of outflowing ionospheric origin ions. We present the altitude profiles of actual and "thermalized" heat fluxes for major ion species in the collisionless region by using the Barghouthi model. By comparing the actual and "thermalized" heat fluxes, we can see whether the heat flux corresponds to a small perturbation of an approximately bi- Maxwellian distribution (actual heat flux is small compared to "thermalized" heat flux), or whether it represents a significant deviation (actual heat flux equal or larger than "thermalized" heat flux). The model takes into account ion heating due to wave–particle interactions as well as the effects of gravity, ambipolar electric field, and divergence of geomagnetic field lines. In the discussion of the ion heat fluxes, we find that (1) the role of the ions located in the energetic tail of the ion velocity distribution function is very significant and has to be taken into consideration when modeling the ion heat flux at high altitudes and high latitudes; (2) at times the parallel and perpendicular heat fluxes have different signs at the same altitude. This indicates that the parallel and perpendicular parts of the ion energy are being transported in opposite directions. This behavior is the result of many competing processes; (3) we identify altitude regions where the actual heat flux is small as compared to the "thermalized" heat flux. In such regions we expect transport equation solutions based on perturbations of bi-Maxwellian distributions to be applicable. This paper presents new experimentally determined branching fractions and oscillator strengths (log gf) for lines originating from 17 levels belonging to 5 terms of the first excited odd configuration 4d7(4D)5p in Rh II. The intensity calibrated spectra of Rh II have been recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer between 25000 and 45000 cm−1 (2200–4000 Å). In this region, 49 lines have been identified and measured. By combining the branching fractions obtained from the spectra with previously measured lifetimes, log gf values are reported. Objective: The aims of this study were to use dynamic hepatocyte-specific contrast-enhanced MRI to evaluate liver volume and function in liver cirrhosis, correlate the results with standard scoring models and explore the inhomogeneous distribution of liver function in cirrhotic livers. Methods: 10 patients with liver cirrhosis and 20 healthy volunteers, serving as controls, were included. Hepatic extraction fraction (HEF), input relative blood flow and mean transit time were calculated on a voxel-by-voxel basis using deconvolutional analysis. Segmental and total liver volumes as well as segmental and total hepatic extraction capacity, expressed in HEFmI, were calculated. An incongruence score (IS) was constructed to reflect the uneven distribution of liver function. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for group comparison of the quantitative liver function parameters, liver volumes and ISs. Correlations between liver function parameters and clinical scores were assessed using Spearman rank correlation. Results: Patients had larger parenchymal liver volume, lower hepatocyte function and more inhomogeneous distribution of function compared with healthy controls. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the non-homogeneous nature of liver cirrhosis and underlines the necessity of a liver function test able to compensate for the heterogeneous distribution of liver function in patients with diseased liver parenchyma. We present a comparative study of low frequency electric field spectral densities and temperatures observed by the Cluster spacecraft in the high altitude cusp/mantle region. We compare the relation between the O+ temperature and wave intensity at the oxygen gyrofrequency at each measurement point and find a clear correlation. The trend of the correlation agrees with the predictions by both an asymptotic mean-particle theory and a test-particle approach. The perpendicular to parallel temperature ratio is also consistent with the predictions of the asymptotic mean-particle theory. At times the perpendicular temperature is significantly higher than predicted by the models. A simple study of the evolution of the particle distributions (conics) at these altitudes indicates that enhanced perpendicular temperatures would be observed over many RE after heating ceases. Therefore, sporadic intense heating is the likely explanation for cases with high temperature and comparably low wave activity. We observe waves of sufficient amplitude to explain the highest observed temperatures, while the theory in general overestimates the temperature associated with the highest observed wave activity, indicating that such high wave activity is very sporadic. Summary The aim was to investigate long-term efficacy of a resilient appliance in patients with pain due to temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A randomised, controlled trial was performed in 80 recruited TMD pain patients. They were randomly allocated to one of two groups: treatment with a resilient appliance or treatment with a hard, palatal, non-occluding appliance. The primary treatment outcome was judged positive when patients' characteristic pain intensity decreased by at least 30%. Additional treatment outcomes were physical functioning, emotional functioning and headache. At the 12-month follow-up 50% of the patients in the treatment group and 42% in the control group had a 30% reduction of characteristic pain intensity, when calculated in an intent-to-treat analysis. Jaw function improved in both groups at the 6- and 12-month follow-up. Emotional functioning improved in both groups at the 6-month follow-up; an improvement concerning grade of depression was found in the control group at 12 months. Headache decreased in both groups at both follow-ups. There were no statistically significant differences found regarding primary and additional outcomes between groups at the 6- and 12-months follow-up. There was no statistically significant difference between the resilient appliance and the non-occluding control appliance in reducing TMD pain, physical functioning, emotional functioning and headache in a 12 months perspective. Background: Emergency hernia surgery, in contrast to elective hernia surgery, is associated with appreciable mortality. Incarcerated hernia is the second most common cause of small bowel obstruction after adhesions, and the leading cause of bowel strangulation. Methods: Information on patients who died within 30 days of groin hernia surgery was retrieved from the Swedish Hernia Register, from the Cause-of-Death Register, and from hospital notes. Results: Of 103,710 groin hernia operations between 1992 and 2004, 292 patients died within 30 days of surgery. Hospital notes and cause of death were retrieved for 242 cases (82%). In 5 of these patients, the hernia operation was done in addition to more urgent surgery and therefore excluded from further analyses; 152 patients were admitted as emergency cases and 55 of these patients underwent bowel resection. A total of 107 patients had signs of bowel obstruction when admitted. For 37% of these patients, physical examination of the groin was not documented. Patients with bowel obstruction without a note on a palpable groin lump were more likely to undergo imaging investigation preoperatively ( P < 0.001) and they had an increased time to surgery compared to patients with a palpable lump. Women and patients with femoral hernia were significantly less likely to undergo a groin examination compared to other patients. Local anaesthesia was used in 7% of all patients who died postoperatively, and in 3% of emergency cases. Pulmonary disease, sepsis and malignant disease were more common as causes of death after emergency surgery than after elective surgery. We use the Cluster spacecraft to study three events with intense waves and energetic oxygen ions (O+) in the high altitude cusp and mantle. The ion energies considered are of the order 1000 eV and higher, observed above an altitude of 8 earth radii together with high wave power at the O+ gyrofrequency. We show that heating by waves can explain the observed high perpendicular energy of O+ ions, using a simple gyroresonance model and 25-45% of the observed wave spectral density at the gyrofrequency. This is in contrast to a recently published study where the wave intensity was too low to explain the observed high altitude ion energies. Long lasting cases (>10 min) of high perpendicularto- parallel temperature ratios are sometimes associated with low wave activity, suggesting that high perpendicular-toparallel temperature ratio is not a good indicator of local heating. Using multiple spacecraft, we show that the regions of enhanced wave activity are at least one order of magnitude larger than the gyroradius of the heated ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radiative lifetimes of 17 excited levels of Nb , in the energy range 27 400-47 700 cm (5p y , 5p x , 5p w , 5s5p v , 5s6p n , 5s6p o , have been measured. For 15 of these levels, the lifetimes are obtained for the first time. The lifetimes were measured using the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence technique and the experiments are complemented by a theoretical investigation using a relativistic Hartree-Fock method including core polarization. By combining the experimental lifetimes and the calculated branching fractions, we obtain transition probabilities for the individual de-excitation channels from the investigated levels. We present a case study of significant heating (up to 8 keV) perpendicular to the geomagnetic field of outflowing oxygen ions at high altitude (12 RE) above the polar cap. The shape of the distribution functions indicates that most of the heating occurs locally (within 0.2-0.4 RE in altitude). This is a clear example of local ion energization at much higher altitude than usually reported. In contrast to many events at lower altitudes, it is not likely that the locally observed wave fields can cause the observed ion energization. Also, it is not likely that the ions have drifted from some nearby energization region to the point of observation. This suggests that additional fundamentally different ion energization mechanisms are present at high altitudes. One possibility is that the magnetic moment of the ions is not conserved, resulting in slower outflow velocities and longer time for ion energization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the short-term efficacy of a resilient appliance in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) suffering from pain, a randomized, controlled trial was performed in 80 recruited TMD pain patients. They were randomly allocated to one of two groups: treatment with a resilient appliance or treatment with a hard, palatal, non-occluding appliance. The primary treatment outcome measure was judged positive when patients’ TMD pain at worst, according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), decreased by at least 30%. One additional treatment outcome was reduction of characteristic pain intensity. Number needed to treat was measured on the basis of primary treatment outcome at 10 weeks. At baseline, patient characteristics and TMD pain did not differ between the groups. There were no significant differences between groups regarding a 30% reduction in VAS-reported TMD pain at worst at 10 weeks’ follow-up; 61% in the treatment group and 46% in the control group. After 6 and 10 weeks of treatment, CPI decreased in both groups. Number needed to treat was 9·1 for both the resilient and the control appliance therapy during 10 weeks. New measurements of radiative lifetimes for 9 levels in singly ionized tungsten (WII) have been performed with the time-resolved laser-induced-fluorescence technique. Transition probabilities have been obtained from a combination of experimental lifetimes and theoretical branching fractions. The reliability of the present results is assessed through the good agreement observed between the calculated lifetimes and the experimental values from this work and from previous publications. When chemical reactions are performed in semi-batch mode and the reaction rate is relatively low, the reactant added may be accumulated. The resulting thermal accumulation is of major concern regarding process safety, as a fault in the cooling system may lead to a run-away reaction. The feed rate in semi-batch processes is usually constant, but this paper discusses methods of optimizing the feed rate interactively, based on the measured heat flow and the calculated amount of compound that has actually reacted. The prerequisite of such procedures is to run the experiments in a reaction calorimeter in which the heat flows can be measured accurately and continuously. The reaction calorimeter CAP202 (chemical process analyzer) determines thermal effects by measuring the true heat flow (THF) based on unique design principles. In particular, measurements can be performed without requiring any calibration procedures and the obtained results are most reliable and exhibit extremely stable baselines. The benefits in respect of experimental speed, data quality and long term performance are obvious. Due its broad dynamic range the instrument can be employed for measurements ranging from small physical heat to energetic chemical reactions. The CPA allows running experiments seamlessly with reaction volumes between 10 and 180 mL. This volume flexibility simplifies the investigation of multi-step operations and is the basis for various applications employing precious or highly energetic compounds. Due to the fact that calibrations are not required, altering conditions during a single experiment like changes in viscosities, liquid levels or stirring speeds do not affect the results of the measurements. Abstract: In planar silicon detector structures, the charge sharing between pixels is one limiting factor for colour X-ray imaging using integrated photon counting pixel detectors. 3D detector structures have been proposed as one solution to this problem. However, there are also readout system solutions to the problem, i.e., introducing pixel-to-pixel communication and distributed charge summing in the readout electronics. In this work, different charge summing schemes are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The increase in electronic noise introduced by the charge summing is one of the most severe problems. A proper selection of summing scheme is necessary to obtain an efficient system. Antennas in Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags have often been designed in a single layer with copper as conductor and plastic foils as substrate. There is currently a large interest in roll to roll production of RFID tags and silver-based inks have been developed for use in printed RFID antennas. Silver ink based single layer antennas work well and provide 70–80% of the reading range compared to copper solutions. However, more advanced antennas are needed to provide less sensitivity to the environment of RFID tags that is need for placing tags on metal or near water. In this work, a study of multilayered antennas so called patch antennas, for 2.45 GHz RFID tags, is presented. The advantage of the patch antenna is that it can be applied to any kind of material, reflecting or lossy material, and still provide good antenna function. However, the patch antenna efficiency is strongly dependent on the material used. For low cost RFID tags in logistics there is a need to manufacture the antenna as a part of the packaging process. This paper analyzes the properties of viscous swirling flow in a pipe. The analysis is based on the time-averaged quasicylindrical Navier-Stokes equations and is applicable to steady, unsteady, and turbulent swirling flow. A method is developed to determine the critical level of swirl (vortex breakdown) for an arbitrary vortex. The method can also be used for an estimation of the radial velocity profile if the other components are given or measured along a single radial line. The quasicylindrical equations are rearranged to yield a single ordinary differential equation for the radial distribution of the radial velocity component. The equation is singular for certain levels of swirl. It is shown that the lowest swirl level at which the equation is singular corresponds exactly to the sufficient condition for axisymmetric vortex breakdown as derived by Wang and Rusak [J. Fluid Mech. 340, 177 (1997)] and Rusak et al. [AIAA J. 36, 1848 (1998)]. In narrow regions around the critical levels of swirl, the solution violates the quasicylindrical assumptions and the flow must undergo a drastic change of structure. The critical swirl level is determined by the sign change of the smallest eigenvalue of the discrete linear operator which relates the radial velocities to effects of viscosity and turbulence. The aim of this study was to compare the findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain patients with clinical diagnoses of myofascial pain or arthralgia/osteoarthritis in combination with myofascial pain according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. The temporomandibular joints of 60 consecutive patients, 19 with myofascial pain and 41 patients with arthralgia/osteoarthritis in combination with myofascial pain were examined clinically and with MRI. Overall the most common MRI findings were different kinds of disc displacements and structural bone changes, which were found in both pain groups. However, disc displacements were found significantly ( P = 0·002) more often in the group arthralgia/osteoarthritis in combination with myofascial pain. One hundred and four joints were found to have no clinical diagnosis of disc displacements, but 64 of these joints had findings of disc displacements on MRI. Joint fluid was found in both pain groups. Patients having a combination of disc displacement and joint fluid were significantly ( P = 0·047) more common in the pain group arthralgia/osteoarthritis in combination with myofascial pain. In conclusion, the MRI findings of different kinds of disc displacement and structural bone changes were common in TMD patients. The clinical diagnoses for subdivision into myogenous only or combined arthrogenous and myogenous pain groups were not confirmed by MRI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The linewidth enhancement (α-) factor of quantum-dot (QD) semiconductor optical amplifiers in the small signal gain and nonlinear regimes is theoretically investigated. A microscopic polarization equation and a wave equation are used to model sub-picosecond pulse propagation in the nonlinear regime. In addition, a population equation that takes into account spectral hole burning and carrier heating effects is used. A novel approach to obtain the α-factor from the output pulse amplitude and phase in the dynamic nonlinear regime is presented. An in-depth study reveals that the presence of excited states (ES) limits the α-factor to values greater than 1 except when the energy separation between the ground state and ES is large. The α-factor dependence on QD inhomogeneous broadening, carrier density, carrier temperature, energy level separation, and input pulse energy is analyzed. We find that these can change the α-factor considerably. In particular, the α-factor increases with increasing input pulse energy and can be greater than 10 for input pulse energies larger than the amplifier's input pulse saturation energy. The Ion Composition Analyzer (ICA) is part of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC). ICA is designed to measure the three-dimensional distribution function of positive ions in order to study the interaction between the solar wind and cometary particles. The instrument has a mass resolution high enough to resolve the major species such as protons, helium, oxygen, molecular ions, and heavy ions characteristic of dusty plasma regions. ICA consists of an electrostatic acceptance angle filter, an electrostatic energy filter, and a magnetic momentum filter. Particles are detected using large diameter (100 mm) microchannel plates and a two-dimensional anode system. ICA has its own processor for data reduction/compression and formatting. The energy range of the instrument is from 25 eV to 40 keV and an angular field-of-view of 360° × 90° is achieved through electrostatic deflection of incoming particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using data from the Mars Express Ion Mass Analyzer (IMA) we investigate the distribution of ion beams of planetary origin and search for an influence from Mars crustal magnetic anomalies. We have concentrated on ion beams observed inside the induced magnetosphere boundary (magnetic pile-up boundary). Some north-south asymmetry is seen in the data, but no longitudinal structure resembling that of the crustal anomalies. Comparing the occurrence rate of ion beams with magnetic field strength at 400 km altitude below the spacecraft (using statistical Mars Global Surveyor results) shows a decrease of the occurrence rate for modest (< 40 nT) magnetic fields. Higher magnetic field regions (above 40 nT at 400 km) are sampled so seldom that the statistics are poor but the data is consistent with some ion outflow events being closely associated with the stronger anomalies. Abstract: In this study, we examine how charge loss due to charge sharing in photon-counting pixels detectors affects the recording of spot intensity in an X-ray diffraction (XRD) setup. In the photon-counting configuration, the charge from photons that are absorbed at the boarder of a pixel will be shared between two pixels. If the threshold is high enough, these photons will not be counted whereas if it is low enough, they will be counted twice. In an XRD setup, the intensity and position of various spots should be recorded. Thus, the intensity measure will be affected by the setting of the threshold. In this study, we used a system level Monte Carlo simulator to evaluate the variations in the intensity signals for different threshold settings and spot sizes. The simulated setup included an 8keV mono-chromatic source (providing a Gaussian shaped spot) and the MEDIPIX2 photon-counting pixel detector (55μm × 55μm pixel size with 300μm silicon) at various detector biases. Our study shows that the charge-sharing distortion can be compensated by numerical post processing and that high resolution in both charge distribution and position can be achieved. The structure, stability, and hydrolysis characteristics of β-lactoglobulin (LG) A are different from those of either β-LG B or β-LG C. Purified samples of these proteins were hydrolyzed with trypsin and the rates of loss of native monomeric β-LG structure were measured using sodium dodecyl sulfate PAGE. At the same time, the appearance of many individual peptides were identified and followed in time by HPLC, measuring their concentration as a function of solution pH, temperature, protein concentration, and added urea or palmitate. The identity of the peptides was confirmed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This semiquantitative exploration showed that the rate of hydrolysis was in the order β-LG A > β-LG B > β-LG C under most circumstances, and that 12 of the 18 trypsin-susceptible bonds were cleaved at very similar rates that were governed by the variant type. Consequently, the rate of hydrolysis of the intact protein was related to the overall structural stability of the individual proteins and the accessibility of certain peptide bonds to the enzyme. An automatic optimization tool for semiconductor devices based on iterative device simulations is developed. The tool is used for optimization of different kinds of semiconductor devices using various performance measures. High performance optimization algorithms, both local and global, are used to achieve an efficient design in shortest possible time. In this paper the effects of different optimization algorithms, performance measures, and number of variables in the optimization are studied. Both the computational efficiency and the devices achieved with different performance measures are studied. We give a demonstration of the usefulness of this method in a comparison between different device topologies, which have been optimized for best performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In this paper, we present a numerical study of charge sharing in photon-counting X-ray imaging detectors. The study is based on charge transport simulations combined with a system level Monte Carlo simulation code to calculate the energy resolution of different pixel detector configurations. Our simulations show that the charge sharing is very sensitive to the electric field distribution in the device, and that the higher doping levels used in the GaAs detector reduce the effect of charge sharing significantly. Our study concludes that one of advantages in using very heavy semiconductor materials in X-ray imaging detectors is the possibility to suppress charge sharing utilizing structures with much higher electric field. A 100-μm-thick epitaxial GaAs detector absorbs 52% of the photons, while a 300-μm-thick silicon (detector absorbs only 8% of the photons (30 keV source). In addition to the superior stopping power, the GaAs detector has five times lower charge diffusion, resulting in superior spatial and energy resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To develop and evaluate a method of calculating split renal function from computed tomography (CT) images based on the assumption that the accumulation of contrast medium is proportional to the renal function, and to compare the results with the renogram.Material and Methods: The study comprised a retrospective analysis of CT images and renograms from previous donors. Twenty-seven potential renal donors were studied using a technique for measuring the area and mean attenuation of the separate CT slices, and for calculating the volume and total attenuation of the whole kidney.Results: Correlation between CT and renography was moderate (r = 0.43), but the range of results was narrow. The ratio between the two kidneys was more even with CT (50 +/- 2.1%) than with the renogram (48 +/- 2.9%) (right kidney), and the mean difference between the two methods was 3 +/- 2.3 percentage points.Conclusion: The renogram can be replaced using calculations from the CT examination in estimating split renal function in potential renal donors. Despite the fact that severe itch is common in many dermatological diseases, the therapeutic arsenal against itching is limited. From neurophysiological experiments, using a new technique termed cutaneous field stimulation, it is known that acute itch can be effectively relieved by stimulation of cutaneous nociceptors. We tested the effects of cutaneous field stimulation (25 min, 16 electrodes, 4 Hz per electrode, up to 0.8 mA) on chronic itch due to atopic dermatitis. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (100 Hz, up to 26 mA) was used for comparison. In 27 patients, itch was measured just prior to, during and at regular intervals up to 12 h after either type of treatment. Both treatments augmented the itch sensation during ongoing stimulation, presumably reflecting an altered sensory processing in the somatosensory pathways of chronic itch patients. However, after cessation of cutaneous field stimulation, but not transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, the itch sensation was significantly depressed for up to 7 h. The peak inhibitory effect (about 25% of control) was reached between 1 and 5 h poststimulation. Neither treatment had any significant effect on alloknesis, as measured before and 10 min after stimulation. It is concluded that cutaneous field stimulation strongly depresses chronic itch, and is a potentially useful symptomatic treatment of itch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increasing demand for acceptable environment in the modern workplace is it necessary, already in the construction phase, to estimate what effect different environmental factors have on the occupants. Thermal sensation is affected by many factors in the work place environment, especially thermal factors and effects from air movement caused by different ventilation principles. A series of full scale measurements as well as numerical calculations have been carried out in order to investigate whether Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations and measurements with a thermal manikin are able to predict the perceived thermal climate. When human thermal sensation is linked together in measurements and calculations, the thermal situation in the work place environment is visualized. The results show relatively good agreement with the measurements made in the real environment. However, numerical and experimental methods need to be further developed. Evaluation methods of this type, will enable engineers to make better predictions and early decisions in the design and construction process. Background: Passive immunization with orally administered antibodies against specific pathogens has previously been successfully used therapeutically in both animal and human studies. We employed a similar strategy for experimental treatment of mice infected with the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori. Methods: An anti-H. pylori bovine colostral hyperimmune immunoglobulin preparation (BIC) was generated and its efficacy was tested in different in vitro experiments, such as binding to the Lewis[sup b] blood group antigen, inhibition of adherence of H. pylori to human gastric mucosa tissue sections in situ and in a haemagglutination assay. The BIC preparation was also given in the drinking water to H. pylori-infected mice. Results: An inhibition of 95% of the binding of H. pylori to Lewis[sup b] glycoconjugate was observed in vitro. Furthermore, a blocking activity of almost 90% was observed when the BIC was preincubated with H. pylori bacteria. Finally, the BIC preparation inhibited the haemagglutination of H. pylori and human red blood cells. Seven of 40 (17.5%) mice remained infected in the treatment group as compared with 25 of 45 (55.5%) in the control group. Hence, the cure rate was 66%, P = < 0.001. The mean number of colonies in the antibody-treated mice where eradication was not successful was also reduced (P < 0.05). In trials using FVB/N transgenic Lewis[sup b] expressing mice, a cure rate of 50%-66% was observed. Conclusion: Bovine colostral antibodies against H. pylori can be generated in high titres, inhibit binding in vitro and can eradicate or reduce the number of bacteria in infected mice. A widely used method for determination of transition probabilities and oscillator strengths is based on measurements of branching fractions and radiative lifetimes. In the present work the different sources of uncertainty in branching fraction measurements using Fourier transform spectroscopy and lifetime measurements using laser induced fluorescence are discussed. A detailed description is presented of how the uncertainties should be combined to provide a well-defined uncertainty of the derived quantity. A fully stochastic model for the imaging properties of X-ray silicon pixel detectors is presented. Both integrating and photon counting configurations have been considered, as well as scintillator-coated structures. The model is based on three levels of Monte Carlo simulations; photon transport and absorption using MCNP, full band Monte Carlo simulation of charge transport and system level Monte Carlo simulation of the imaging performance of the detector system. In the case of scintillator-coated detectors, the light scattering in the detector layers has been simulated using a Monte Carlo method. The image resolution was found to be much lower in scintillator-coated systems due to large light spread in thick scintillator layers. A comparison between integrating and photon counting readout methods shows that the image resolution can be slightly enhanced using a photon-counting readout. In addition, the proposed model has been used to study charge-sharing effects on the energy resolution in photon counting detectors. The simulation shows that charge-sharing effects are pronounced in pixel detectors with a pixel size below 170×170 μm2. A pixel size of 50×50 μm2 gives a highly distorted energy spectrum due to charge sharing. This negative effect can only be resolved by introducing advanced counting schemes, where neighbouring pixels communicate in order to resolve the charge sharing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The charge transport and X-ray photon absorption in three-dimensional (3D) X-ray pixel detectors have been studied using numerical simulations. The charge transport has been modelled using the drift-diffusion simulator MEDICI, while photon absorption has been studied using MCNP. The response of the entire pixel detector system in terms of charge sharing, line spread function and modulation transfer function, has been simulated using a system level Monte Carlo simulation approach. A major part of the study is devoted to the effect of charge sharing on the energy resolution in 3D-pixel detectors. Silicon carbide vertical MESFET devices are well suited for high speed and high power electronic devices. In this work we have optimized the geometry of vertical MESFETs for microwave applications, using iterative two-dimensional simulations. Relevant parasitics are included in the simulations to investigate the performance of realistic devices. The state of the art device has fT=7 GHz and we show that vertical MESFETs fabricated with traditional technology are totally limited by parasitics. Two different approaches to reduce the parasitics in the vertical MESFET are proposed where fT increases significantly. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract Three Swedish and one Canadian isolate of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were tested for apothecial formation in light of different wavelengths and for measuring light absorbance of macerated apothecia and apothecia filtrate in a spectrophotometer. The apothecial formation was recorded after keeping laboratory-produced sclerotia under different light filters illuminated by True-Lite fluorescent tubes. The experiments, performed at room temperature, demonstrated that normal apothecia developed only in light of wavelengths between 276 and 319 nm, and that macerated apothecia and apothecia filtrate absorbed light at the same wavelengths with a maximum absorbance at 310 nm. The stipes showed a clear positive phototropism in light that was not essential for apothecia development. indicating that there may be different photoreceptors for phototropism and photomorphogenesis.
