Eight haematological quantities were measured in EDTA anticoagulated venous blood specimens collected from 1826 healthy male and female individuals between 18 and 90 years of age in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The samples, collected between November 1999 and November 2001 as part of the Nordic Reference Interval Project (NORIP), were analysed on 12 different types of modern automated haematology instruments currently in use among the 60 laboratories participating in the study. Non-parametric reference intervals (between 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles) have been calculated for B-Haemoglobin (females 117-153 g/L, males 134-170 g/L), B-Erythrocytes (females 3.94-5.16×10 12 /L, males 4.25-5.71×10 12 /L), B-EVF (females 0.348-0.459, males 0.395-0.500), B-MCV (82-98 fL), Erc-MCH (27.1-33.3 pg), Erc-MCHC (317-357 g/L), B-Trc (females 165-387×10 9 /L, males 145×348×10 9 /L) and B-Lkc (3.5-8.8×10 9 /L). Partitioning of data according to age and gender was done according to a standardized procedure. For most variables the calculated reference intervals corresponded well with older and less well-defined reference intervals. The mean concentration of B-Haemoglobin increased by 0.08 g/L per year of age in women, and decreased by 0.1 g/L per year of age in men. B-Haemoglobin increased with body mass index in both men and women. Smoking increased the mean of B-Lkc by 1.1×10 9 /L and regular use of alcohol increased the mean of B-MCV by 0.8 fL. Magnetosheath jets represent localized enhancements in dynamic pressure observed within the magnetosheath. These energetic entities, carrying excess energy and momentum, can impact the magnetopause and disrupt the magnetosphere. Therefore, they play a vital role in coupling the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosphere. However, our understanding of the morphology and formation of these complex, transient events remains incomplete over two decades after their initial observation. Previous studies have relied on oversimplified assumptions, considering jets as elongated cylinders with dimensions ranging from |$0.1\, R_{\rm E}$| to |$5\, R_{\rm E}$| (Earth radii). In this study, we present simulation results obtained from Amitis, a high-performance hybrid-kinetic plasma framework (particle ions and fluid electrons) running in parallel on graphics processing units (GPUs) for fast and more environmentally friendly computation compared to CPU-based models. Considering realistic scales, we present the first global, three-dimensional (3D in both configuration and velocity spaces) hybrid-kinetic simulation results of the interaction between solar wind plasma and the Earth. Our high-resolution kinetic simulations reveal the 3D structure of magnetosheath jets, showing that jets are far from being simple cylinders. Instead, they exhibit intricate and highly interconnected structures with dynamic 3D characteristics. As they move through the magnetosheath, they wrinkle, fold, merge, and split in complex ways before a subset reaches the magnetopause. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. The purpose of this investigation was to improve a rankit ordinal model for evaluating and validating dichotomized tests in a prospective Nordic project. Material and methods. The model is based on the assumption that the S-shaped curve of fractions of positive for increasing concentrations can be de-convoluted to a histogram and thereby used to calculate the parameters for a ln-Gaussian distribution. In a Nordic survey, four urine samples with known concentrations of hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) and nitrites were distributed to more than 2500 practitioners' offices. Results. The results are presented as parameters (geometric mean and CV) for the components urine-hCG and urine-nitrites, together with fractions of positive for clinical critical values (5 and 40 IU/L for hCG), for which fractions should be below 0.01 and above 0.99, respectively, and 7 µmol/L for nitrites. Furthermore, the concentration intervals of varying fractions of positive from 0.01 to 0.99 are estimated as grey zones. The parameters and grey zones for different kits are compared. No urine-hCG kit fulfilled the low clinical criterion, whereas all fulfilled the high criterion. Seven of the eight nitrites kits had fractions of positive above 0.9 for the company confirmation limit, but varying fractions for the clinically important limit of 7 µmol/L (fractions from 0.06 to 0.83). Conclusions. The present model makes it easy to estimate parameters for the kits, and also to estimate the fractions of measured positives for specified concentrations. Up to 136 laboratories participated in a joint effort to assess the trueness of routine measurements for 14 serum components. An unmodified, fresh-frozen human serum ("IMEP-17 Material 1"), produced for an international inter-laboratory comparison, served as the "master material". The serum had assigned values of the highest available metrological quality, and is assumed to involve no or negligible commutability problems. The material was used in the assignment of traceable values to two other reference sera, "CAL" and "X", through parallel measurements on the three materials according to a common protocol. In this transfer process, uncertainty estimates were provided for all values. The material CAL had been supplied with reference measurement procedure values in 1997, and the two sets of assigned values agreed well. A lyophilized control serum "HK02" was also included in the routine analysis series. It, too, had assigned values based on reference measurement procedures. Significant matrix effects were found. The project has provided: Assigned traceable values for 14 components in a fresh-frozen serum, available to Nordic laboratories for the coming years as "NFKK reference serum X". Confirmation of earlier assigned reference measurement procedure values for a number of components in CAL, the main calibrator in the Nordic Reference Interval Project (NORIP). The transferred values will now serve as the primary reference. Evidence of long-term stability (≥5 years) of the fresh-frozen serum CAL when stored at -80°C. Evidence of substantial matrix effects in the processed serum HK02.
