This study examines the West Pacific (WP) pattern, one of the primary modes of low-frequency variability during boreal winter, isolated in 11 global climate model seasonal hindcasts. WP mode separation are verified using three metrics: selected mode number, explained variance, and pattern correlation coefficient of the loading vector. When it comes to the pattern reproducibility, it turns out that the WP is tightly linked to the Atlantic jet and stationary wave. To diagnose details of mean biases in terms of WP reproducibility, atmospheric mean fields are composited for two groups: one group replicates well the key feature, a north–south dipole pattern, while the other manifests considerable displacements and magnitude disparities. The group with a lower pattern correspondence to the observation shows noticeable biases with the southeastward-shifted Atlantic dipole of the stationary wave and downstream-expanded Atlantic jet, which is attributed to the increase in meridional gradient of near surface temperature and resultant enhanced local baroclinicity. Magnified jet tail in the eastern North Atlantic (NA) can intensify the barotropic energy conversion thereby the wave energy actively passes toward both east and west. The excessive wave energy over the Arabian Peninsula and the central North Pacific can be favorable for the formation of a ridge, therefore it possibly leads to disorganized WP patterns at both ends of NA basin. A series of analysis suggests the importance of a realistic winter climatology simulation over NA for better WP representation through the interaction between different scales as well as different basins. In this study, a series of analyses were performed to verify the performance of the current Asia‐Pacific Economic Cooperation Climate Center (APCC) in‐house model, the Seamless Coupled Prediction System (SCoPS), for predicting major climate variabilities and the related dynamical processes. The prediction skills for forecasting the major atmospheric and oceanic climate modes and the related circulation patterns in the tropical Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans were examined. The interbasin relationships between the major modes were also analyzed. Despite slight spatial and temporal shifts, SCoPS simulates the atmospheric responses to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) well over both the tropical and the northwestern Pacific. The major modes over the Indian Ocean are also reasonably well predicted. The dynamical interaction between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, which is involved in the development of the tropical Pacific modes, is also represented with good accuracy. In case of the Atlantic Ocean, the northern tropical sea surface temperature (SST) variability is better predicted than the southern tropical SST variability. Through examining the characteristics of El Niño‐La Niña asymmetries in forcing the tropical Atlantic variability SST modes, we found that this skill difference could be partly because of too strong linear response of the SST variability in the southern region to ENSO. The North Atlantic Oscillation, one of the major atmospheric modes during boreal winter, was also investigated. It was found that SCoPS reasonably replicates the observed loading pattern and temporal variation but tends to overestimate the relationship between North Atlantic Oscillation and ENSO. Abstract: A newly developed fluorine‐free method to render robust superhydrophobic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric is introduced with alkaline hydrolysis followed by thermal hydrophobic aging process, i.e., nonchemical finishing. The superhydrophobic PET fabric shows a static contact angle of 170.7° ± 2.4° and a shedding angle of 8.6° ± 0.7°. Breathability and color of the fabricated PET fabric are improved and not changed. The alkaline hydrolyzed and thermal hydrophobic aged PET fabric is easily bent and has increased smoothness, fullness, and softness. Additionally, it has good durability for tape test, abrasion test, pH test, and washing test under an extra aging process that gives rise to self‐healing. Self‐cleaning property of the superhydrophobic PET fabric is excellent. Therefore, the alkaline hydrolyzed and thermally hydrophobic aged superhydrophobic fabric has a potential for commercial applications in functional or biomedical textiles, goods and related industries, with improved human/environmental friendliness and efficiency of care. The Dynamics of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (DYNAMO) field campaign was conducted over the Indian Ocean (IO) from October 2011 to February 2012 to investigate the initiation of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO). Three MJOs accompanying westerly wind events (WWEs) occurred in late October, late November, and late December 2011. Momentum budget analysis is conducted to understand the contributions of the dynamical processes involved in the wind evolution associated with the MJO over the IO during DYNAMO using European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts analysis. This analysis shows that westerly acceleration at lower levels associated with the MJO active phase generally appears to be maintained by the pressure gradient force (PGF), which could be partly canceled by meridional advection of the zonal wind. Westerly acceleration in the midtroposphere tends to be mostly attributable to vertical advection. The results herein imply that there is no simple linear dynamic model that can capture the WWEs associated with the MJO and that nonlinear processes have to be considered. In addition, the MJO in November (MJO2), accompanied by two WWEs (WWE1 and WWE2) spaced a few days apart, is diagnosed. Unlike other WWEs during DYNAMO, horizontal advection is more responsible for the westerly acceleration in the lower troposphere for WWE2 than the PGF. Interactions between the MJO2 envelope and convectively coupled waves (CCWs) are analyzed to illuminate the dynamical contribution of these synoptic-scale equatorial waves to the WWEs. A better understanding of multiscale interactions within the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), including momentum exchanges, is critical for improved MJO prediction skill. In this study, convective momentum transport (CMT) associated with the MJO is analyzed based on the NOAA Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR). A three-layer vertical structure associated with the MJO, as previously suggested in the mesoscale momentum tendency profile based on global cloud-resolving model simulations, is evident in the subgrid-scale momentum tendency from the CFSR. Positive (negative) subgrid-scale momentum tendency anomalies are found near the surface, negative (positive) anomalies are found in the low to midtroposphere, and positive (negative) anomalies in the upper troposphere are found within and to the west (east) of the MJO convection. This tends to damp the MJO circulation in the free atmosphere, while enhancing MJO winds near the surface. In addition, it could also reduce the MJO eastward propagation speed and lead to the backward tilt with height in the observed MJO structure through a secondary circulation near the MJO center. Further analyses illustrate that this three-layer vertical structure in subgrid-scale momentum tendency largely balances the grid-scale momentum transport of the zonal wind component u, mainly through the transport of seasonal mean u by the MJO-scale vertical motion. Synoptic-scale systems, which were previously proposed to be essential for the u-momentum transport of the MJO, however, are found to play a minor role for the total grid-scale momentum tendency. The above momentum tendency structure is also confirmed with the ECMWF analysis for the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC) that lends confidence to these above results based on the CFSR. In this work, a design optimization study was conducted to improve the performance of a membraneless microfluidic fuel cell with a double-bridge cross-section of the flow channel. Governing equations including Navier–Stokes, mass-transport, and Butler–Volmer equations were solved numerically to analyze the electrochemical phenomena and evaluate the performance of the fuel cells. Optimization was performed to maximize the peak power density using a genetic algorithm combined with a surrogate model constructed by radial basis neural network. Two sub-channel widths of the flow channel were selected as design variables for the optimization. As a result, a large increase in the inner channel width and a small decrease in the outer channel width effectively increased the peak power density of the MMFC. In the present study, we use modeling experiments to investigate the impact of the diurnal cycle on the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) during the Australian summer. Physical initialization and a nudging technique enable us to assimilate the observed Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rain rate and atmospheric variables from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research Reanalysis 2 (R2) into the Florida State University Global Spectral Model (FSUGSM), resulting in a realistic simulation of the MJO. Model precipitation is also significantly improved by TRMM rain rate observation via the physical initialization. We assess the influence of the diurnal cycle on the MJO by modifying the diurnal component during the model integration. Model variables are nudged toward the daily averaged values from R2. Globally suppressing the diurnal cycle (NO_DIURNAL) exerts a strong impact on the Maritime Continent. The mean state of precipitation increases and intraseasonal variability becomes stronger over the region. It is well known that MJO weakens as it passes over the Maritime Continent. However, the MJO maintains its strength in the NO_DIURNAL experiment, and the diminution of diurnal signals during the integration does not change the propagating speed of the MJO. We suggest that diminishing the diurnal cycle in NO_DIURNAL consumes less moist static energy (MSE), which is required to trigger both diurnal and intraseasonal convection. Thus, the remaining MSE may play a major role along with larger convective instability and stronger lower level moisture convergence in intensifying the MJO over the Maritime Continent in the model simulation. This paper investigates the impact of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the diurnal cycle of rainfall over the western Maritime Continent during the austral summer. For this purpose, cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function analysis is applied to the tropical rainfall measuring mission rain rate and the Japanese Reanalysis-25 data for the period 1998-2008. The real-time multivariate MJO index by Wheeler and Hendon (Mon Wea Rev 132:1917-1932, ) is adopted to define the intensity and the phase of MJO. It is demonstrated that the hourly maximum rain rate over the domain tends to increase when convectively active phase of MJO approaches the Maritime Continent. In contrast, the hourly maximum rain rate tends to decrease when convectively suppressed phase of MJO resides over the region. The changes in the rain rate due to MJO differ over the ocean and the land. This difference is the greatest when the MJO is in the mature stage. Throughout the day during this stage, terrestrial rain rates show minimum values while diurnally varying oceanic rain rates record maximum values. Thus, precipitation becomes more intense in the morning over the Java Sea and is weakened in the evening over Borneo and Sumatra during the mature stage of MJO. During the decaying stage of MJO over the Maritime Continent, the diurnal cycle of precipitation weakens significantly over the ocean but only weakly over land. Analyses suggest that the anomalous lower level winds accompanied by MJO interact with the monsoonal flow over the Maritime Continent. Westerlies induced by MJO convection in the mature stage are superimposed on the monsoonal westerlies over the equator and increase wind speed mainly over the Java Sea due to the blocking effect of orography. Mountainous islands induce flow bifurcation, causing near-surface winds to converge mainly over the oceanic channels between two islands. As a result, heat flux release from the ocean to the atmosphere is enhanced by the increased surface wind resulting in instability as described in the wind-induced surface heat exchange mechanism. This may contribute to heavy rainfall over the Java Sea in the morning during the mature stage. On the other hand, convergence and vertical velocity over the islands, which play important roles in inducing nighttime rainfall, tend to be weak in the evening during the mature stage of MJO. Strong westerlies arising from MJO and the seasonal flow during the mature stage tend to interrupt convergence over islands. A double-bridge shape is proposed as a novel flow channel cross-sectional shape of a membraneless microfluidic fuel cell, and its electrochemical performance was analyzed with a numerical model. A membraneless microfluidic fuel cell (MMFC) is a micro/nano-scale fuel cell with better economic and commercial viability with the elimination of the polymer electrolyte membrane. The numerical model involves the Navier–Stokes, Butler–Volmer, and mass transport equations. The results from the numerical model were validated with the experimental results for a single-bridge channel. The proposed MMFC with double-bridge flow channel shape performed better in comparison to the single-bridge channel shape. A parametric study for the double-bridge channel was performed using three sub-channel widths with the fixed total channel width and the bridge height. The performance of the MMFC varied most significantly with the variation in the width of the inner channel among the sub-channel widths, and the power density increased with this channel width because of the reduced width of the mixing layer in the inner channel. The bridge height significantly affected the performance, and at a bridge height at 90% of the channel height, a higher peak power density of 171%was achieved compared to the reference channel. In this study, we proved that micro/micro hierarchical structures are enough to achieve a superhydrophobic surface using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dip-coating. Furthermore, the effect of fiber type and yarn diameter on superhydrophobicity and water spray resistance was investigated. Polyester fabrics with two types of fibers (staple fabric and filament) and three types of yarn diameters (177D, 314D, and 475D) were used. The changes in the surface properties and chemical composition were investigated. Static contact angles and shedding angles were measured for superhydrophobicity, and the self-cleaning test was conducted. Water spray repellency was also tested, as well as the water vapor transmission rate and air permeability. The PDMS-coated staple fabric showed better superhydrophobicity and oleophobicity than the PDMS-coated filament fabric, while the filament fabric showed good self-cleaning property and higher water spray repellency level. When the yarn diameter increased, the fabrics needed higher PDMS concentrations and longer coating durations for uniform coating. The water vapor transmission rate and air permeability did not change significantly after coating. Therefore, the superhydrophobic micro/micro hierarchical fabrics produced using the simple method of this study are more practical and have great potential for mass production than other superhydrophobic textiles prepared using the chemical methods. This study developed a human-friendly energy-efficient superhydrophobic polypropylene (PP) fabric by oxygen plasma etching and short-term thermal aging without additional chemicals. The effect of the microroughness on the superhydrophobicity was examined by adjusting the weave density. After the PP fabric was treated with oxygen plasma etching for 15 min and thermal aging at 120 °C for 1 h (E15H120 1 h), the static contact and shedding angles were 162.7° ± 2.4° and 5.2° ± 0.7° and the energy consumption was 136.4 ± 7.0 Wh. Oxygen plasma etching for 15 min and thermal aging at 120 °C for 24 h (E15H120 24 h) resulted in a static contact and shedding angle of 180.0° ± 0.0° and 1.8° ± 0.2° and energy consumption of 3628.5 ± 82.6 Wh. E15H120 1 h showed a lower shedding angle but had a higher sliding angle of 90°. E15H120 24 h exhibited shedding and sliding angles of less than 10°. Regardless of the thermal aging time, superhydrophobicity was higher in high-density fabrics than in low-density fabrics. The superhydrophobic PP fabric had a similar water vapor transmission rate and air permeability with the untreated PP fabric, and it showed a self-heading property after washing followed by tumble drying and hot pressing. Numerous cases of lung injury caused by viral infection were reported during the coronavirus disease-19 pandemic. While there have been significant efforts to develop drugs that block viral infection and spread, the development of drugs to reduce or reverse lung injury has been a lower priority. This study aimed to identify compounds from a library of compounds that prevent viral infection that could reduce and prevent lung epithelial cell damage. We investigated the cytotoxicity of the compounds, their activity in inhibiting viral spike protein binding to cells, and their activity in reducing IL-8 production in lung epithelial cells damaged by amodiaquine (AQ). We identified N -(4-(4-methoxyphenoxy)-3-methylphenyl)- N -methylacetamide (MPoMA) as a non-cytotoxic inhibitor against viral infection and AQ-induced cell damage. MPoMA inhibited the expression of IL-8, IL-6, IL-1β, and fibronectin induced by AQ and protected against AQ-induced morphological changes. However, MPoMA did not affect basal IL-8 expression in lung epithelial cells in the absence of AQ. Further mechanistic analysis confirmed that MPoMA selectively promoted the proteasomal degradation of inflammatory mediator p65, thereby reducing intracellular p65 expression and p65-mediated inflammatory responses. MPoMA exerted potent anti-inflammatory and protective functions in epithelial cells against LPS-induced acute lung injury in vivo. These findings suggest that MPoMA may have beneficial effects in suppressing viral infection and preventing lung epithelial cell damage through the degradation of p65 and inhibition of the production of inflammatory cytokines. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way that schools provide instruction to learners and these changes may last for an extended period of time. One current trend is the use of hyflex instruction, which involves teachers providing instruction to students simultaneously in the classroom and online. This form of instruction provides unique challenges for teachers, including establishing expectations and managing classroom behaviors. Teachers must utilize the same best practices in classroom management in the hyflex environment that they typically use in the face-to-face setting, including (a) teaching expectations, (b) modeling the desired behavior, and (c) providing timely and explicit feedback to support students, especially young children and those with disabilities, to follow the guidelines for physical distancing and to keep students, teachers, administrators, and their families safe at this time. This article provides a brief overview for general and special education teachers to apply these strategies in the hyflex instructional environment to support young children and maintain protocols required due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: Antiseizure medications (ASMs) can rarely result in severe, sometimes fatal, cutaneous adverse reactions. To date, few studies have reported on the incidence rates (IRs) of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) due to ASM use. This study aimed to determine the IRs of SCAR resulting from the use of seven commonly prescribed ASMs, carbamazepine (CBZ), phenytoin (PHT), oxcarbazepine (OXC), lamotrigine (LMT), zonisamide (ZNS), levetiracetam (LVT), and topiramate (TPM), and to compare the associated risks among the drugs. Methods: Using a nationwide health claims database, we selected all the patients prescribed with one of the target ASMs. We defined a SCAR case as the first hospitalization with one of three specific codes provided by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (L511, L512, and L27). We then calculated the IR of SCARs according to each target ASM. Results: The IR of SCARs for each ASM was as follows: 870/1 000 000 person‐years (PYs) for CBZ, 5750/1 000 000 PYs for PHT, 1490/1 000 000 PYs for OXC, 3860/1 000 000 PYs for LMT, 1540/1 000 000 PYs for ZNS, 830/1 000 000 PYs for LVT, and 400/1 000 000 PYs for TPM. Concomitant use of antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs significantly increased the risk of SCARs with OXC, LVT, or TPM use. Comorbid skin disease was associated with a significantly higher IR of SCARs from CBZ, PHT, OXC, LMT, or LVT use. Significance: This is the first study in Asia to determine the IRs of SCARs for various ASMs and compare the rates across drugs using a large dataset. Background: The effect of novel tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes (EC) and heated tobacco products (HTP), on allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma is not well known. Objective: To evaluate the health effect of novel tobacco products on asthma and AR. Methods: This study was conducted using large survey data on Korean middle and high school students. The relationship between current asthma/AR and novel tobacco products user status was evaluated. In order to compare the combined effects of conventional cigarette (CC), EC, and HTP use on current allergic diseases, the participants were classified into 18 groups based on CC (current, former, and never), EC (current, former, and never), and HTP (ever and never) status. Results: A total of 60,040 participants representing 2,850,118 Korean adolescents were analyzed. Of all participants, 6.7%, 2.7%, and 2.9% were current CC, current EC, and ever HTP users, respectively. Current CC and ever HTP use was significantly associated with current asthma and AR in adjusted models. Current EC showed association with current AR but the association with asthma disappeared in the adjusted model. Among 18 groups, the groups including current CC use showed higher risk of current AR and asthma than never HTP‐never EC‐never CC group. The odds ratio of current asthma especially increased more in those who used EC and/or HTP with CC concurrently than those in the never HTP‐never EC‐current CC user group. Conductive textiles are promising for human–machine interfaces and wearable electronics. A simple way to create conductive textiles by coating fabric with liquid metal (LM) particles is reported. The coating process involves dip‐coating the fabric into a suspension of LM particles at room temperature. Despite being coated uniformly after drying, the textiles remain electrically insulating due to the native oxide that forms on the LM particles. Yet, they can be rendered conductive by compressing the textile to rupture the oxide and thereby percolate the particles. Thus, compressing the textile with a patterned mold can pattern conductive circuits on the textile. The electrical conductivity of these circuits increases by coating more particles on the textile. Notably, the conductive patterns autonomously heal when cut by forming new conductive paths along the edge of the cut. The textiles prove to be useful as circuit interconnects, Joule heaters, and flexible electrodes to measure ECG signals. Further, the LM‐coated textiles provide antimicrobial protection against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Such simple coatings provide a route to convert otherwise insulating textiles into electrical circuits with the ability to autonomously heal and provide antimicrobial properties. Background and aims: Inflammation and calcification are major factors responsible for degeneration of bioprosthetic valve and other substitute heart valve implantations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-calcification effects of Entelon150® (consisting of grape-seed extract) in a beagle dog model of intravascular bovine pericardium implantation. Methods: In total, 8 healthy male beagle dogs were implanted with a bovine pericardium bilaterally in the external jugular veins and divided into two groups. Animals in the Entelon150® group (n = 4) were treated with 150 mg of Entelon150® twice daily for six weeks after surgery. The negative control (NC) group (n = 4) was treated with 5 ml of saline using the same method. After six weeks, we measured the calcium content, performed histological examination, and performed molecular analysis. Results: The calcium content of implanted tissue in the Entelon150® group (0.56±0.14 mg/g) was significantly lower than that in the NC group (1.48±0.57 mg/g) (p < 0.05). Histopathological examination showed that infiltration of chronic inflammatory cells, such as fibroblasts and macrophages, occurred around the graft in all groups; however, the inflammation level of the implanted tissue in the Entelon150® group was s lower than that in the NC group. Both immunohistochemical and western blot analyses revealed that bone morphogenetic protein 2 expression was significantly attenuated in the Entelon150® group. Conclusions: Our results indicate that Entelon150® significantly attenuates post-implantation inflammation and degenerative calcification of the bovine pericardium in dogs. Abstract: A hydrophobic and water-insoluble platinum(II) compound, cis-(cha)2Pt(NO3)2 was encapsulated by macromolecular micelles self-assembled from an amphiphilic cyclotriphosphazene [NP(MPEG750)(GlyPheLeu)2Et]3 (CP750). The micelle-encapsulated platinum(II) compound exhibited outstanding pharmacokinetics in rats by showing long blood circulation and much larger systemic exposure (AUC=43.5μgh/ml) compared with the free carboplatin (AUC=4.32μgh/ml). Biodistribution study of the micellar platinum(II) compound using male Sprague–Dawley rats has shown excellent tumor to tissue ratios of 4.03 at 2h post injection and 4.67 at 24h post injection. Furthermore, the micellar platinum(II) compound exhibited more than 6 times higher cellular uptake in human cervical (HeLa) and lung (A549) tumor cells compared with the free platinum compound. Also it is surprising that the micellar platinum(II) compound displayed specifically high cytotoxicity against the stomach tumor cells (SNU638), which are one of the least responsive to chemotherapeutic agents currently in clinical use. The acute toxicity study has shown that the LD50 values of free and the micellar cis-(cha)2Pt(NO3)2 are approximately 70mg/kg and 90mg/kg, respectively. Thus the platinum compound encapsulated by cyclotriphosphazene micelles is a promising candidate for preclinical studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Excess aeration to membrane surface is common for controlling membrane fouling in a submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) system, but significant energy is consumed for excess air production. Therefore, an alternative strategy for membrane fouling control is currently needed. A new configuration of MBR was proposed in this study to control membrane fouling effectively. To reduce biosolids concentration near the membrane surface, the position of the membrane module in MBR was elevated from the bottom to the top in the reactor. This could divide the reactor to two different zones: upper and lower zone. Air was not supplied at the lower zone whereas aeration was given to the upper zone where the membrane filtration was carried out. Biosolids concentration was reduced in the upper zone because the mixed liquor was settled down to the lower zone. Membrane fouling could be lessened in the upper zone due to the reduced biosolids concentration. Therefore, to verify if this new configuration of MBR could mitigate membrane fouling, the effect of changing vertical position of the membrane module in MBR on membrane fouling was investigated. Prior to verification the effect of elevation of membrane module on membrane fouling, influence of MLSS concentration on membrane fouling was investigated first. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) increase became steep as MLSS concentration increased. And the immersed membrane module was elevated from the bottom to the top of the MBR. When the upper membrane was located in the bioreactor, less membrane fouling was observed. This could demonstrate a possibility of new MBR design to control membrane fouling. In addition, reduced dissolved oxygen level in the returned sludge to anoxic tank could increase denitrification efficiency if this configuration is directly applied to biological nutrient removal processes. Abstract: Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) exhibit many traits of a stem cell population. Knowing that BMSC have the ability to self-renew, proliferate and differentiate into a variety of cell types, questions may arise as to whether these traits differ between the cells that have different expansion times. In this study, we examined the stem cell potentiality of BMSC through their characterization, proliferative capacity and the ability to differentiate into multiple lineages in the cultured 2nd passage cells and 10th passage cells. The results were as follows: (1) the 10th passage cells had a larger and more flatted morphology than the 2nd passage cells and also exhibited a decreased labeling for BMSC-related antigens such as CD90, CD73. (2) The cell proliferative capacity was approximately 2 times greater in the 2nd passage cells, and the apoptosis phenomenon was detected in the 10th passage cells. (3) The ability to differentiate into mesodermal tissue (osteocytes, adipocytes), as well as into ectodermal tissue (neurons) was more effective in the 2nd passage cells. Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) is a rare disease with profound vascular leakage, which can be associated with a high mortality. There have been several reports on CLS as an adverse effect of anti-cancer agents and therapy, but the incidence of CLS according to the kinds of anti-cancer drugs has not been systemically evaluated. Thus, the aim of our study was to comprehensively meta-analyze the incidence of CLS by different types of cancer treatment or after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). We searched the literatures (inception to July 2018) and among 4612 articles, 62 clinical trials (studies) were eligible. We extracted the number of patients with CLS, total cancer patients, name of therapeutic agent and dose, and type of cancer. We performed a meta-analysis to estimate the summary effects with 95% confidence interval and between-study heterogeneity. The reported incidence of CLS was categorized by causative drugs and BMT. The largest number of studies reported on CLS incidence during interleukin-2 (IL-2) treatment (n = 18), which yielded a pooled incidence of 34.7% by overall estimation and 43.9% by meta-analysis. The second largest number of studies reported on anti-cluster of differentiation (anti-CD) agents (n = 13) (incidence of 33.9% by overall estimation and 35.6% by meta-analysis) or undergoing BMT (n = 7 (21.1% by overall estimation and 21.7% by meta-analysis). Also, anti-cancer agents, including IL-2 + imatinib mesylate (three studies) and anti-CD22 monoclinal antibodies (mAb) (four studies), showed a dose-dependent increase in the incidence of CLS. Our study is the first to provide an informative overview on the incidence rate of reported CLS patients as an adverse event of anti-cancer treatment. This meta-analysis can lead to a better understanding of CLS and assist physicians in identifying the presence of CLS early in the disease course to improve the outcome and optimize management. Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare disease characterized by shock caused by capillary hyperpermeability. The disease can occur in cancer patients and effective therapeutic strategies have not been established yet. The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical and laboratory data, treatment modalities, and mortality rate of patients and to identify contributing factors leading to mortality of SCLS in cancer. We searched MEDLINE (inception to July 2018) and of 4612 articles, we identified 62 case reports on SCLS associated with cancer or cancer-related drugs in a total of 53 articles. SCLS was associated with cancer itself in 43.6%, with anti-cancer agents in 51.6% and bone marrow transplantation (BMT) in 4.8%. Among anti-cancer agents, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) was the most frequently associated drug (14.6%), followed by interleukin (IL)-2 (11.4%). The most common associated malignancies were hematologic (61.3%) with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (22.7%) and multiple myeloma (12.9%) being the leading causes. Common symptoms and signs included dyspnea (27.4%), edema (67.7%), hypotension (32.2%), pleural effusion (29.0%), ascites (22.7%), oliguria (22.7%), and weight gain (21.0%). Patients with SCLS were treated with steroids (59.7%), volume replacement (33.8%), diuretics (24.2%), inotropes (9.6%), methylxanthines (12.8%), β2 agonists (4.8%), while intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) were administered in 2 patients (3.2%) only. Among sixteen deaths during follow-up, four were directly attributed to SCLS. Hematologic malignancies were associated with an increased risk for mortality (hazard ratio (HR) 8.820, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.126–69.063, p = 0.038). Taken together, SCLS can be one important adverse event in cancer patients and careful monitoring of fluid volume is required in the management of SCLS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
