This research endeavours to study the growth of ultralong carbon nanotubes (UL-CNTs) from methane using diverse catalysts, namely FeCl3, bi-metallic Fe-Cu, Fe-Ni, and Fe-Co chlorides. Aqueous catalyst solutions were evenly dispersed on silica substrates and grown at 950 °C in the presence of hydrogen via a horizontal chemical vapour deposition (CVD) furnace. The samples underwent characterisation by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and optical microscopy to identify the quality of CNTs and enumerate individual UL-CNTs. Our findings revealed that FeCl3, as a mono-metallic catalyst, generated the longest UL-CNTs, which measured 1.32 cm, followed by Fe-Cu (0.85 cm), Fe-Co (0.7 cm), and Fe-Ni (0.6 cm), respectively. The G/D ratio (graphene to defects) from the Raman spectroscopy was the highest with the FeCl3 catalyst (3.09), followed by Fe-Cu (2.79), Fe-Co catalyst (2.13), and Fe-Ni (2.52). It indicates that the mono-iron-based catalyst also produces the highest purity CNTs. Moreover, this study scrutinises the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) model for CNT growth and the impact of carbide formation as a precursor to CNT growth. Our research findings indicate that forming iron carbide (Fe3C) is a crucial transition phase for amorphous carbon transformation to CNTs. Notably, the iron catalyst generated the longest and densest CNTs relative to other iron-based bi-metallic catalysts, which is consistent with the temperature of carbide formation in the mono-metallic system. From correlations made using the phase diagram with carbon, we conclude that CNT growth is favoured because of increased carbon solubility within the mono-metallic catalyst compared to the bi-metallic catalysts. The inherent value and use of hydrocarbons from waste plastics and solvents can be extended through open-loop chemical recycling, as this process converts plastic to a range of non-plastic materials. This process is enhanced by first creating plastic–solvent combinations from multiple sources, which then are streamlined through a single process stream. We report on the relevant mechanics for streamlining industrially relevant polymers such as polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) into chemical slurries mixed with various organic solvents such as toluene, xylene, and cyclohexane. The miscibility of the polymer feedstock within the solvent was evaluated using the Relative Energy Difference method, and the dissolution process was evaluated using the "Molecular theories in a continuum framework" model. These models were used to design a batch process yielding 1 tonne/h slurry by setting appropriate assumptions including constant viscosity of solvents, disentanglement-controlled dissolution mechanism, and linear increase in the dissolved polymer's mass fraction over time. Solvent selection was found to be the most critical parameter for the dissolution process. The characteristics of the ideal solvent are high affinity to the desired polymer and low viscosity. This work serves as a universal technical guideline for the open-loop chemical recycling of plastics, avoiding the growth of waste plastic by utilising them as a carbon feedstock towards a circular economy framework. For every three people on the planet, there are approximately two Tonnes (Te) of plastic waste. We show that carbon recovery from polystyrene (PS) plastic is enhanced by the coaddition of solvents to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by liquid injection chemical vapour deposition. Polystyrene was loaded up to 4 wt% in toluene and heated to 780 °C in the presence of a ferrocene catalyst and a hydrogen/argon carrier gas at a 1:19 ratio. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The PS addition in the range from 0 to 4 wt% showed improved quality and CNT homogeneity; Raman "Graphitic/Defective" (G/D) values increased from 1.9 to 2.3; mean CNT diameters increased from 43.0 to 49.2 nm; and maximum CNT yield increased from 11.37% to 14.31%. Since both the CNT diameters and the percentage yield increased following the addition of polystyrene, we conclude that carbon from PS contributes to the carbon within the MWCNTs. The electrical contact resistance of acid-washed Bucky papers produced from each loading ranged from 2.2 to 4.4 Ohm, with no direct correlation to PS loading. Due to this narrow range, materials with different loadings were mixed to create the six wires of an Ethernet cable and tested using iPerf3; the cable achieved up- and down- link speeds of ~99.5 Mbps, i.e., comparable to Cu wire with the same dimensions (~99.5 Mbps). The lifecycle assessment (LCA) of CNT wire production was compared to copper wire production for a use case in a Boeing 747-400 over the lifespan of the aircraft. Despite extensive academic and commercial development, a comprehensive understanding of the principles necessary for high-yield production of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is lacking, whether in oriented films, bulk powders, or other forms. In chemical vapor deposition growth of CNT films on substrates, trace contaminants of carbon, such as deposits on the reactor tube walls, are known to cause inconsistency in key production metrics, including CNT density and alignment. In this study, we show that trace exposure of the catalyst to carbon during initial heating of the catalyst film is a critical determinant of CNT yield, and this carbon exposure accelerates catalyst nanoparticle formation via film dewetting and increases the probability of CNT nucleation and the resultant density of the CNT population. By controlled exposure of the catalyst to a trace amount of carbon, we show up to a 4-fold increase in bulk mass density for a given forest height, an 8-fold increase in local CNT number density, and a 2-fold increase in the growth lifetime, relative to a reference condition. We discuss potential mechanisms to explain the role of carbon exposure on the probability of CNT nucleation from nanoparticle catalysts, supported by microscopy and gas analysis. • Ar bombardment duration shifts ZnO nanowires from n-type to intrinsic/p-type. • The maximum Fermi shift caused by surface stripping with argon bombardment ~0.8 eV. • Fermi shift and shift from n-type towards intrinsic remains after 28 day in ambient condition and recontamination. Optimised ZnO nanorod characteristics are essential for novel devices to operate efficiently, especially shifting the n-type nature towards intrinsic or p-type. The effects of argon bombardment for varying amounts of time on the surface chemistry and Fermi level of ZnO nanorods have been studied using XPS. Bombardment at 5 keV removed surface contamination caused by amorphous carbon and OH−, H 2 O and C-O groups. The bombardment also causes the O1s, Zn2p and valence band to shift to lower binding energies, indicating a shift towards intrinsic behaviour. Bombardment time can be used to effect a shift of up to 0.8 eV, and this shift remains after the nanorods were re-contaminated by exposure to ambient conditions for 28 days. These results indicate that argon bombardment can permanently shift the n-type nature of ZnO to intrinsic for use in novel devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be spun into fibers as potential lightweight replacements for copper in electrical current transmission since lightweight CNT fibers weigh <1/6th that of an equivalently dimensioned copper wire. Experimentally, it has been shown that the electrical resistance of CNT fibers increases with longitudinal strain; however, although fibers may be under radial strain when they are compressed during crimping at contacts for use in electrical current transport, there has been no study of this relationship. Herein, we apply radial stress at the contact to a CNT fiber on both the nano- and macro-scale and measure the changes in fiber and contact resistance. We observed an increase in resistance with increasing pressure on the nanoscale as well as initially on the macro scale, which we attribute to the decreasing of axial CNT...CNT contacts. On the macro scale, the resistance then decreases with increased pressure, which we attribute to improved radial contact due to the closing of voids within the fiber bundle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) show that applied pressure on the fiber can damage the π–π bonding, which could also contribute to the increased resistance. As such, care must be taken when applying radial strain on CNT fibers in applications, including crimping for electrical contacts, lest they operate in an unfavorable regime with worse electrical performance.
