This paper proposes a speech coding algorithm, MP-CELP (multipulse-based CELP). In MP-CELP, a multipulse excitation signal quantization method is proposed, where all of the pulse amplitudes are simultaneously vector-quantized (VQ). In order to improve quantization performance, a combination search between multiple pulse location candidates and the amplitude VQ codevectors is developed. When the number of pulse location candidates is 16, segmental SNR (SNRseg) is improved by 0.77 dB. Fast search for the pulse locations greatly reduces the search complexity while maintaining high speech quality. The speech quality for 11 kb/s MP-CELP with 10-ms frame is equivalent to that for ITU-T G.728 (16 kb/s LD-CELP). 22.8 kb/s MP-CELP, where 11.8 kb/s soft-decision FEC (forward error correction) is attached to 11 kb/s MP-CELP, provides significantly higher speech quality than 22.8 kb/s GSM full-rate speech coding standard, and MOS values are improved by 1.0 to 1.5 at 7 and 13% transmission error rates. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
