Simple Summary: The environmental issue posed by the distribution of plastic is largely due to their fragmentation into micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), which are spread across aquatic, atmospheric, and terrestrial ecosystems. The discovery that these particles can easily accumulate in aquatic organisms and edible plants has rapidly drawn global attention to their potential impact on human health. Therefore, based on the One Health approach, this paper will first provide an overview of soil contamination as well as human exposure routes and toxicity pathways of MNPs. It then describes the significant role of livestock animals as a critical link between soil and human exposure, focusing on the lack of the available literature and on the role of livestock animals as reservoirs and carriers of MNP contamination along the food chain. The lack of a standardized method to detect, quantify, and characterize plastic particles in different matrices prevents the determination of their realistic load. For this reason, the development of a database where researchers can document data, both on MNP characteristics and assessment procedures, is also suggested with the perspective of training, in the future, artificial intelligence (AI) tools capable of predicting the most abundant/dangerous polymer(s) and help in guiding decisions to reduce risks to global health. Plastic pollution is a global diffuse threat, especially considering its fragmentation into microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs). As research on this topic is in its early stages, there is no standard method to quantify the amount and the characteristics of MNPs in different matrices. Therefore, the creation of a common database where researchers can report data on MNP characteristics and quantification methods could be helpful for both method standardization and the future training of an AI tool for predicting the most abundant/dangerous polymer(s), thus supporting policy decisions to reduce plastic pollution and perfectly fitting with One Health principles. Providing an anodic potential in a bio‐electrochemical system to the obligate aerobe Pseudomonas putida enables anaerobic survival and allows the cells to overcome redox imbalances. In this setup, the bacteria could be exploited to produce chemicals via oxidative pathways at high yield. However, the absence of anaerobic growth and low carbon turnover rates remain as obstacles for the application of such an electro‐fermentation technology. Growth and carbon turnover start with carbon uptake into the periplasm and cytosol. P. putida KT2440 has three native transporting systems for glucose, each differing in energy and redox demand. This architecture previously led to the hypothesis that internal redox and energy constraints ultimately limit cytoplasmic carbon utilization in a bio‐electrochemical system. However, it remains largely unclear which uptake route is predominantly used by P. putida under electro‐fermentative conditions. To elucidate this, we created three gene deletion mutants of P. putida KT2440, forcing the cells to exclusively utilize one of the routes. When grown in a bio‐electrochemical system, the pathway mutants were heavily affected in terms of sugar consumption, current output and product formation. Surprisingly, however, we found that about half of the acetate formed in the cytoplasm originated from carbon that was put into the system via the inoculation biomass, while the other half came from the consumption of substrate. The deletion of individual sugar uptake routes did not alter significantly the secreted acetate concentrations among different strains even with different carbon sources. This means that the stoichiometry of the sugar uptake routes is not a limiting factor during electro‐fermentation and that the low rates might be caused by other reasons, for example energy limitations or a yet‐to‐be‐identified oxygen‐dependent regulatory mechanism. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and investigate the genomic background of scrotal circumference and semen parameters in the Italian Simmental bulls. Scrotal circumference, number of normal spermatozoa, ejaculate volume, spermatozoa motility, and total spermatozoa were measured on 622 bulls, of which 603 had genotypes for 42,141 SNP. Variance components of scrotal circumference were estimated with an animal model that included the fixed effects of birth year, animal age, and measurement method, and the random effects of day of measurement and animal. In the model for the other traits, the scrotal circumference was added as a covariate to account for its influence on the semen parameters. A genome-wide association study was carried out using the ssGBLUP-approach. Heritabilities ranged from 0.07 ± 0.05 (spermatozoa motility) to 0.50 ± 0.14 (scrotal circumference). A total of 13 SNP passed the Bonferroni correction threshold and the number of significantly associated markers ranged from 1 (ejaculate volume and spermatozoa motility) to 5 (total spermatozoa). Genes already associated with reproduction parameters were retrieved close to the significant SNP. Results of the present study gave preliminary insights about the genetic determinism of semen quality in Italian Simmental bulls. Low to moderate heritabilities were estimated for semen traits. Simple Summary: Due to its multiple properties, such as stability, hardness and economic prices, the application of plastics has gradually increased, becoming essential in every industry. Since 1950, the worldwide plastic distribution has progressively created a serious pollution issue caused by difficulties in proper recycling, which has led to the presence of plastic fragments, called microplastics and nanoplastics (MPs/NPs), in the environment. The majority of the research has focused on the aquatic pollution, while studies regarding soil contamination are still poor, with the necessity to better understand how MPs/NPs can enter the food chain and reach humans passing through both crops and animals. Therefore, there is a need for evaluation, and the present work will provide an overview of the sources and distribution of MPs/NPs in farms; different mammalian exposure (digestion, inhalation and dermal contact) and associated risks and health problems caused by these fragments. In particular, this review aims to provide information on the effects, mainly from additives (such as Bisphenol A-BPA), on livestock reproduction and fertility. Pollution due to microplastics and nanoplastics is one of the major environmental issues of the last decade and represents a growing threat to human and animal health. In aquatic species, there is a large amount of information regarding the perturbation of marine organisms; instead, there are only a few studies focusing on the pathophysiological consequences of an acute and chronic exposure to micro- and nanoplastics in mammalian systems, especially on the reproductive system. There are several studies that have described the damage caused by plastic particles, including oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammatory response, dysregulation of the endocrine system and accumulation in various organs. In addition to this, microplastics have recently been found to influence the evolution of microbial communities and increase the gene exchange, including antibiotic and metal resistance genes. Special attention must be paid to farm animals, because they produce food such as milk, eggs and meat, with the consequent risk of biological amplification along the food chain. The results of several studies indicate that there is an accumulation of microplastics and nanoplastics in human and animal tissues, with several negative effects, but all the effects in the body have not been ascertained, especially considering the long-term consequences. This review provides an overview of the possible adverse effects of the exposure of livestock to micro- and nanoplastics and assesses the potential risks for the disruption of reproductive physiological functions. Fear and anxiety are the most frequently studied emotional states in chemosignal research. Despite differences between these two emotional states, findings from research using fear and anxiety body odors (BOs) are often treated as part of a similar phenomenon. In this article, we examine possible similarities and differences between participants exposed to fear and anxiety BOs on 2 dependent variables commonly used in chemosignals' research: (1) the activation of facial muscles in displays of fear expressions (i.e. the medial frontalis and the corrugator supercilii); and (2) the time required to discriminate between negative emotional expressions (fear, anger, and disgust) and neutral ones. Our results show that fear (vs. rest) and anxiety (vs. exercise) BOs activate the medial frontalis , suggesting that both have a similar impact on receivers' facial muscles. However, we could not replicate previous findings regarding the influence of fear BOs in discriminating negative emotional faces from neutral ones. Two additional replication attempts failed to replicate the earlier results, indicating that the results reported in the literature with this specific paradigm should be interpreted cautiously. Triphenylmethane based dyes became popular after their invention in 1858 due to their brilliant shades and high tinting strengths and were used not only as colourants for textile and paper dyeing, but also as pigments in artists' materials under the commercial name 'Fanal®'. However, the extent of their use as pigments in artists' paints has thus far remained unknown. Despite their bright colours, the characteristic low lightfastness of their dyes and pigments inspired further research for new precipitation methods to increase lightfastness, which ultimately resulted in precipitation using complex salts of phosphorus, tungsten, and molybdenum. The present study is based on archival source research from I.G. Farben, the former producer of Fanal®, and Royal Talens, an artists' paint manufacturer that used these pigments. This research focuses on the history of developments in precipitation methodologies employed for early triphenylmethane dyes and the development of the various lines of Fanal® pigments in oil paints produced by the Dutch manufacturer Talens in the late 1920s and onwards. Historic literature sources, such as the Talens publication Kunstschildersmaterialen en Schildertechniek by Frits Kerdijk that document the application of Fanal® pigments, are also highlighted. Simple Summary: Bull fertility is an important contributor of the herd reproductive success, especially in natural service mating systems. Even if the BBSE (Bulls Breeding Soundness Evaluation) is a rapid and cost-effective screening, it is unable to evaluate all the parameters involved in fertility decline, especially those related to genetics and environment. Based on this, the objectives of the study were (i) to define the semen characteristics of young Italian Simmental bulls, (ii) to evaluate the relationship between scrotal circumference (SC), age, and semen characteristics and (iii) to relate the climatic conditions during the entire spermatogenesis to variations in spermatozoa motility and morphology. Concerning the evaluation of SC, this is the first report on Italian Simmental breed; its increase was linked with the concentration and number of total spermatozoa. Considering the effect of the weather changes, the study confirmed the impact of the increasing temperature and humidity on spermatozoa motility and morphology, accordingly with the moment in which the heat stress occurred. Therefore, considering the importance of fertility, wider knowledge of the factors influencing these parameters will help maintain/improve the reproductive capability of the animals and finally, for the producer, the profitability of his herd. The objectives of the study aimed to evaluate the effect of weather conditions and scrotal circumference (SC) on standard semen characteristics of Italian Simmental young bulls (n = 577), all raised in the same performance station and sampled by the artificial vagina (AV) method. Considering the increasing SC, the results showed a significant increase in quantitative semen parameters (p < 0.05 and p < 0.0001, for sperm concentration and total number of spermatozoa, respectively); for every extra centimeter of SC, 17.5 × 106 spermatozoa/mL and 0.102 × 109 of total spermatozoa were produced. The age of the animal at semen collection (395 and 465 days) had similar positive effects. The effect of the average temperature humidity index (THI limits ≤ 40 and ≥70) in the previous 60, 30, and 10 days before the semen collection was also considered. Sixty days before the semen collection, the increasing THI increased both primary (p < 0.0001) and secondary (p < 0.0001) abnormalities while the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa decreased (p < 0.0001). Thirty and ten days before collection, the same effect on morphological traits was maintained, but total and progressive motility was also influenced (p < 0.01) with an unexpected increasing pattern. There is little information on the actual use of early synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) in art objects, especially those from before 1950. Their presence can, however, pose a challenge to conservation because their chemical composition, as well as their lightfastness and sensitivity to solvents, are often unknown. Here, a study on the non-invasive identification of SOPs in historic pre-1950 varnished paint-outs from artists' materials manufacturer Royal Talens is presented. The paints were analysed using a handheld Raman device. Spectra were evaluated by recording the spectra of the same samples with a benchtop instrument. This study demonstrated that the identification of SOPs in varnished oil paints with a non-invasive approach is possible and rather straightforward. The handheld Raman device allowed us to identify fourteen SOPs from eight pigment classes. Besides the occurrence of expected and the known SOPs of this time period, there were also some surprising results, like the detection of the triarylcarbonium pigments PG2 and PB8, and the monoazo Mordant Yellow 1. The current study is the first to examine the central nervous processing of aggression chemosignals within men and women by means of chemosensory event-related potential (CSERP) analysis. Axillary sweat was collected from 17 men and 17 women participating in a competitive computer game (aggression condition) and playing a construction game (control condition). Sweat samples were pooled with reference to donor gender and condition, and presented to 23 men and 25 women via a constant flow olfactometer. Ongoing electroencephalogramwas recorded from61 scalp locations, CSERPs (P2, P3-1, P3-2) were analysed and neuronal sources calculated (low-resolution electromagnetic tomography, LORETA). Women, especially, showed larger P3-1 and P3-2 amplitudes in response to male as compared with female aggression signals (all p values < 0.01). The peak activation of this effect was related to activity within the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (Brodmann area 8). As male aggression commonly targets physical harm, the competence of the human brain to sensitively detect male aggression signals is considered to be highly adaptive. The detection of male aggression signals seems to be of higher importance for women than for men. Introduction:  Pediatric neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the appendix are mostly detected incidentally after appendectomy for acute appendicitis. NET management is a matter of controversy. In this national, multicenter study, we aimed to establish guidelines based on our results and the literature.Materials and Methods:  Medical records of children (0-16 years) with NET of the appendix, treated in Switzerland (1991-2012), were reviewed.Results:  Forty cases (28 girls) were analyzed. Median age at diagnosis was 12.7 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 4.0). Tumor size was 0.1-24 mm (median: 0.6, IQR: 0.6). Four patients (10%) underwent additional surgery because of either tumor size > 15 mm (1/4), extension to the mesoappendix (1/4), or incomplete resection (2/4). Three patients with a tumor of ≥ 20 mm had no additional surgery. No patient had lymph node metastases. All patients were in complete remission at the last follow-up (median: 3.0 years, IQR: 10.9).Conclusion:  We conclude from this study and from an extensive review of the literature that two criteria may point to the need for additional surgery, i.e., the possibility of regional lymph node involvement: tumor size > 20 mm and incomplete surgical resection margins. Geodiversity has shaped and structured the Earth's surface at all spatio-temporal scales, not only through long-term processes but also through medium- and short-term processes. Geodiversity is, therefore, a key control and regulating variable in the overall development of landscapes and biodiversity. However, climate change and land use intensity are leading to major changes and disturbances in bio- and geodiversity. For sustainable ecosystem management, temporal, economically viable and standardized monitoring is needed to monitor and model the effects and changes in vegetation- and geodiversity. RS approaches have been used for this purpose for decades. However, to understand in detail how RS approaches capture vegetation- and geodiversity, the aim of this paper is to describe how five features of vegetation- and geodiversity are captured using RS technologies, namely: (i) trait diversity, (ii) phylogenetic/genese diversity, (iii) structural diversity, (iv) taxonomic diversity and (v) functional diversity. Trait diversity is essential for establishing the other four. Traits provide a crucial interface between in situ, close-range, aerial and space-based RS monitoring approaches. The trait approach allows complex data of different types and formats to be linked using the latest semantic data integration techniques, which will enable ecosystem integrity monitoring and modelling in the future. In this context, organizational effects of gonadal steroids affecting the neural circuitry underlying self-control could be responsible for these early sex differences. In the present study testosterone levels measured in amniotic fluid (via ultra performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry) were used to examine the role of organizational sex hormones on self-control. One hundred and twenty-two 40-month-old children participated in a delay of gratification task (DoG task) and their parents reported on their attention problems and overactive behavior. Girls waited significantly longer for their preferred reward than boys, and significantly more girls than boys waited the maximum period of time, providing evidence for sex differences in delay of gratification. Boys that were rated as suffering from more attention problems and overactive behavior waited significantly shorter in the DoG task. Amniotic testosterone measures were reliable in boys only. Most importantly, boys who waited shorter in the DoG task and boys who were reported to suffer from more attention problems and overactive behavior had higher prenatal testosterone levels. These findings extend our knowledge concerning organizational effects of testosterone on the brain circuitry underlying self-control in boys, and are of relevance for understanding how sex differences in behavioral disorders are connected with a lack of self-control. The sustainable provision of ecological products and services, both natural and man-made, faces a substantial threat emanating from invasive plant species (IPS), which inflict considerable economic and ecological harm on a global scale. They are widely recognized as one of the primary drivers of global biodiversity decline and have become the focal point of an increasing number of studies. The integration of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) plays a pivotal role in their detection and classification across a diverse range of research endeavors, emphasizing the critical significance of accounting for the phenological stages of the targeted species when endeavoring to accurately delineate their distribution and occurrences. This study is centered on this fundamental premise, as it endeavors to amass terrestrial data encompassing the phenological stages and spectral attributes of the specified IPS, with the overarching objective of ascertaining the most opportune time frames for their detection. Moreover, it involves the development and validation of a detection and classification algorithm, harnessing a diverse array of RS datasets, including satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery spanning the spectrum from RGB to multispectral and near-infrared (NIR). Taken together, our investigation underscores the advantages of employing an array of RS datasets in conjunction with the phenological stages, offering an economically efficient and adaptable solution for the detection and monitoring of invasive plant species. The current series of studies are the first to examine brain responses to social aggression signals as a function of male and female sexual orientation. For the first set of studies (1a, 1b), axillary sweat had been collected from 17 heterosexual men and 17 heterosexual women aggressively responding to frustrating opponents (aggression condition) and while playing a construction game (control condition). Sweat samples were pooled according to sex and condition, and presented via a constant flow olfactometer to 17 gay and 23 heterosexual men (Study 1a), and 19 lesbian and 25 heterosexual women (Study 1b). Ongoing EEG was recorded from 61 scalp locations, chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERPs; P2, P3-1, P3-2) were analyzed, and neuronal sources calculated (low resolution electromagnetic tomography). Within the second set of studies (2a, 2b), pictures of males' and females' weak angry and neutral facial expressions were presented to 21 gay and 23 heterosexual men (Study 2a), and 19 lesbian and 26 heterosexual women (Study 2b), and ERPs (N170, P3) were analyzed. Gay men showed larger P3-1 amplitudes than heterosexual men upon presentation of male aggression sweat, accompanied by activation of the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG, BA 10). Gay men also displayed longer N170 latencies in response to men's compared to women's angry facial expressions, while heterosexual men did not. In women, sexual orientation did not affect the processing of aggression sweat or anger expressions. Gay men showed preferential processing of chemosensory aggression signals (P3-1 amplitudes), indicating fine-tuned socioemotional sensitivity, related to activation of brain areas involved in emotion regulation (IFG). They further process the relative relevance of visual aggression signals (N170 latency). The field of conservation biology focuses on maintaining biodiversity by mitigating both global and local threats. One of the top threats to biodiversity is the worldwide problem of invasive species. Each community has its own pests to control, and students can engage with this global issue on a local scale through well-designed service-learning courses. This article discusses how students engaged with conservation biology through an integrated service-learning project tackling invasive species at a local nature center. For mapping, quantifying and monitoring regional and global forest health, satellite remote sensing provides fundamental data for the observation of spatial and temporal forest patterns and processes. While new remote-sensing technologies are able to detect forest data in high quality and large quantity, operational applications are still limited by deficits of in situ verification. In situ sampling data as input is required in order to add value to physical imaging remote sensing observations and possibilities to interlink the forest health assessment with biotic and abiotic factors. Numerous methods on how to link remote sensing and in situ data have been presented in the scientific literature using e.g. empirical and physical-based models. In situ data differs in type, quality and quantity between case studies. The irregular subsets of in situ data availability limit the exploitation of available satellite remote sensing data. To achieve a broad implementation of satellite remote sensing data in forest monitoring and management, a standardization of in situ data, workflows and products is essential and necessary for user acceptance. The key focus of the review is a discussion of concept and is designed to bridge gaps of understanding between forestry and remote sensing science community. Methodological approaches for in situ/remote-sensing implementation are organized and evaluated with respect to qualifying for forest monitoring. Research gaps and recommendations for standardization of remote-sensing based products are discussed. Concluding the importance of outstanding organizational work to provide a legally accepted framework for new information products in forestry are highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review serves as a comprehensive discussion of chemosensory stimulation of the amygdala in healthy humans. Following an introduction of the neuroanatomy of chemosensory processing in primary and secondary olfactory structures, functional resonance magnetic imaging and positron imaging tomography studies are systematically categorized based on valence of stimuli, stimulus concentration, and paradigm-dependent amygdala activation. The amygdala shows patterns of lateralization due to stimulus valence. Main findings include pleasant odors being associated with bilateral or left amygdala activation, and unpleasant odors being associated with activation of the right amygdala, suggesting a crucial role of the right amygdala in evolutionary preservation. Potentially threatening social stimuli, however, might be processed apart from the olfactory system and tend to activate the left amygdala. Amygdala response to chemosensory stimuli correlated with simultaneous activation in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), piriform cortex (PC), and insula, suggesting a close-knit network of these areas during stimulus processing. This article is part of a Special Issue “Chemosignals and Reproduction” Across phyla, chemosensory communication is crucial for mediating a variety of social behaviors, which form the basis for ontogenetic and phylogenetic survival. In the present paper, evidence on chemosensory communication in humans, with special reference to reproduction and survival, will be presented. First, the impact of chemosignals on human reproduction will be reviewed. Work will be presented, showing how chemosensory signals are involved in mate choice and partnership formation by communicating attractiveness and facilitating a partner selection, which is of evolutionary advantage, and furthermore providing information about the level of sexual hormones. In addition to direct effects on phylogenetic survival, chemosignals indirectly aid reproductive success by fostering harm protection. Results will be presented, showing that chemosensory communication aids the emotional bond between mother and child, which in turn motivates parental caretaking and protection, leading to infant survival. Moreover, the likelihood of group survival can be increased through the use of stress-related chemosignals. Stress-related chemosignals induce a stress-related physiology in the perceiver, thereby priming a fight–flight-response, which is necessary for an optimum adaption to environmental harm. Finally, effects of sexual orientation on chemosensory communication will be discussed in terms of their putative role in stabilizing social groups, which might indirectly provide harm protection and foster survival. An integrative model of the presented data will be introduced. In conclusion, an outlook, focusing on the involvement of chemosensory communication in human social behavior and illustrating a novel approach to the significance of chemosensory signals in human survival, will be given. This study presents the retrieval of near-surface soil moisture data below crop canopies (winter rye and winter barley) from airborne L-band radiometer observations using a radiative transfer model at very dry soil moisture conditions (<15 Vol.%). Using physically based models, the roughness parameterization plays a crucial role for the description of the surface emissivity. A two-step optimization procedure was performed for choosing an optimal roughness value to minimize the uncertainty of soil moisture estimates. A crop-type specific roughness parameterization within the model did not show satisfactory soil moisture results. Instead, a "pixel"-based (spatially varying) roughness parameter optimization provided significantly improved results, also indicating a strong relationship between the optimal roughness parameter value and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from imaging spectrometer data. Our results demonstrate the importance of treating surface roughness as spatially variable when retrieving soil moisture information from high spatial resolution L-band brightness temperature data. Furthermore, the results strongly indicate that a combination of passive microwave observations and optical remote sensing data of the vegetation improve the mapping and monitoring of surface soil moisture. Abstract: Androstenone, a compound of human male body odor, might act as a chemosensory signal communicating dominance or aggressiveness. In order to clarify its communicative significance, the relationship between androstenone perception and the level of circulating steroid hormones was investigated in both men and women. Androstenone perception was assessed within n=26 men and n=25 women. Female participants were not currently using hormonal contraception and were in their follicular menstrual cycle phase. Androstenone perception was assessed in terms of olfactory sensitivity, quality judgments, and emotional self-ratings. The perception of isovaleric acid served as a control. Over the course of 2h five saliva samples were collected, aliquots were mixed and levels of estradiol and testosterone were analyzed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. In men, higher testosterone levels were associated with lower olfactory sensitivity to androstenone (p=0.014) and negative feelings when exposed to it (p=0.047). In women, higher estradiol levels were related to judging androstenone as less pleasant (p=0.009) and more unpleasant (p=.0036). The perception of isovaleric acid was unrelated to sex-hormone levels. The current results support the notion of androstenone communicating dominance, aggression or competition. Men with higher testosterone levels are more sensitive to androstenone and dislike its odor, possibly indicating that androstenone signals the readiness for competition in men. Similarly, the fact that women with higher estradiol levels dislike androstenone may be due to androstenone being a signal of reduced willingness for social cooperation and an increased likelihood to engage in extramarital sex. We describe a study using the ASIA-Eagle hyperspectral sensor to measure the spectral response of spring barley over an entire climate-controlled growing season and correlate those results with the results of 25 biophysical and biochemical parameters. The spectrum of each hyperspectral image was used to calculate a range of vegetation indices (VIs) that have been recorded in the literature. Furthermore, all combinations of the 252 spectral bands were tested to calculate a range of difference vegetation indices (VIs(xy)) and reflectance value indices (R(x)) at the central wavelength (x nm) of each band (R(x)). For all three index types we examined the relationship with the vegetation variables measured on the ground by using a cross-validation procedure. The relationship between the estimated and the measured canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) was R²CV ≤ 0:65 (CV, covariance of variation). An R²CV ≥ 0:78 was obtained when modelling leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll content (Chl-SPAD) as well as leaf gravimetric water content (GWC). The prediction of Chl-SPAD with reflectance VIs leads to greater prediction accuracy compared with published VIs as well as difference VIs. Based on the literature, we used the DI1 vegetation index for extracting vegetation variables such as LAI and GWC. However, because of overlap effects, an explicit assignment of the spectral response to a particular vegetation parameter was not possible. The ascertained subtraction VIy = (565-779) nm also shows very good prediction accuracy compared with LAI. The investigated overlap effects for the published VIs did not result in an explicit responsiveness of the spectral response to the measured vegetation parameters. No index shows an explicit spectral signal for a single vegetation parameter. Species of management concern that have been affected by human activities typically are characterized by low genetic diversity, which can adversely affect their ability to adapt to environmental changes. We used 18 microsatellite markers to genotype 362 Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris), and investigated genetic diversity, population structure, and estimated genetically effective population size (Ne). The observed and expected heterozygosity and average number of alleles were 0.455 ± 0.04, 0.479 ± 0.04, and 4.77 ± 0.5 respectively. All measures of Florida manatee genetic diversity were less than averages reported for placental mammals, including fragmented or nonideal populations. Overall estimates of differentiation were low, though significantly greater than zero, and analysis of molecular variance revealed that over 95% of the total variance was among individuals within predefined management units or among individuals along the coastal subpopulations, with only minor portions of variance explained by between group variance. Although genetic issues, as inferred by neutral genetic markers, appear not to be critical at present, the Florida manatee continues to face demographic challenges due to anthropogenic activities and stochastic factors such as red tides, oil spills, and disease outbreaks; these can further reduce genetic diversity of the manatee population. Abstract: The present study assessed emotion regulation in response to chemosensory and visual stimuli. Using cognitive reappraisal, 40 female participants regulated their emotions in response to disgusting pictures and odors, while the startle reflex was elicited and emotion ratings were assessed. Participants reported feeling less negative, and less aroused, while down-regulating their emotions towards both odors and pictures. Although being rated as equally negative and arousing, odor presentations were accompanied by larger startle responses than picture presentations. Furthermore, as compared to pictures emotion regulation towards odors followed a strikingly different time course suggesting less effective emotion regulation in response to disgusting odors. Questionnaire data show that differences between emotion regulation outcome towards odors was not attributable to different regulation strategies used. Thus, the current data suggest a unique role of olfaction in emotion perception, and show that cognitive emotion regulation – although being generally effective – may also be limited. Brain development in mammals has been proposed to be promoted by successful adaptations to the social complexity as well as to the social and non-social chemical environment. Therefore, the communication via chemosensory signals might have been and might still be a phylogenetically ancient communication channel transmitting evolutionary significant information. In humans, the neuronal underpinnings of the processing of social chemosignals have been investigated in relation to kin recognition, mate choice, the reproductive state and emotional contagion. These studies reveal that human chemosignals are probably not processed within olfactory brain areas but through neuronal relays responsible for the processing of social information. It is concluded that the processing of human social chemosignals resembles the processing of social signals originating from other modalities, except that human social chemosignals are usually communicated without the allocation of attentional resources, that is below the threshold of consciousness. A key function of the olfactory system is the detection of differences in odour quality. Therefore, a test was developed to assess odour discrimination ability in normosmic humans. Out of six monomolecular substances (capric acid, coumarin, eugenol, geraniol, phenylethyl alcohol, and vanillin) quaternary mixtures were prepared. Within one item, three odour mixtures were presented (triangle forced-choice procedure). The deviant odour contained the same substances as the two remaining odours; however, the proportions were changed. Study 1 (120 participants) aimed to select items that contribute to a high internal consistency. Study 2 (104 participants) assessed test–retest reliability, parallel test reliability and test validity. Out of 45 items, a 15-item test (Düsseldorf Odour Discrimination Test, DODT) with an internal consistency of 0.61 and medium item difficulties was prepared. The test–retest reliability of the DODT was 0.66 (test interval = 4 weeks) and the parallel test reliability 0.42. The DODT correlated significantly with the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test and to a lesser extent with the phenylethyl alcohol odour threshold test. As the DODT did not correlate with the odour discrimination test of the Sniffin' Sticks, the two tests seem to measure different performances of the olfactory system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: It has long been known that emotions can modulate learning and memory processes in humans and non-human mammals. Here we will review evidence from clinical, neuropsychological, neuroimaging and animal research suggesting an important role of emotions for the establishment of long-term episodic memories in the mammalian brain. In the first part of the review the neuroanatomical and neurochemical foundations of the interaction between brain areas generating emotions, such as the amygdala, and those allowing the association of multi-dimensional stimuli into an episodic memory, such as the hippocampus, are delineated. Patients with emotional and affective disorders show changes in memory performance in dependence of the positive or negative valence of the stimulus material. Furthermore, these patients often exhibit a reduced ability to access specific memories of life events with a striking lack of specific detail. Therefore, in the second part the clinical literature on memory impairments observed in patients with emotional and affective disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and major depression, with a special emphasis on episodic memory function, is discussed. Abstract: Episodic memory is that part of our memory which enables us to memorize a personal event (what) in terms of place (where) and time (when). It is expressed on verbal and behavioral level. In this report we describe a novel method to induce de novo episodic memories in humans for unique events in the laboratory and measure them with standardized ratings and non-verbal motor responses. Visual stimuli were hidden in four out of eight quadrants on a computer screen. Each of these quadrants could be highlighted by pushing a corresponding button on a keyboard which either revealed a visual stimulus for 100ms or remained black. Participants had to remember on which occasion (when) and at which position (where) a specific picture (what) has been encountered. Healthy adult participants were able to verbally recollect the details and the spatiotemporal context of visual stimuli with combinations of high or low concreteness and neutral or emotional content after retention delays up to 72h. The mean number of button presses to each of the four quadrants containing visual stimuli was positively correlated with verbal episodic memory performance. We conclude that episodic memories can be induced experimentally and can be measured by exploratory button press behavior which can serve as a non-verbal behavioral correlate of episodic memory performance. Background: The ability to communicate anxiety through chemosensory signals has been documented in humans by behavioral, perceptual and brain imaging studies. Here, we investigate in a time-sensitive manner how chemosensory anxiety signals, donated by humans awaiting an academic examination, are processed by the human brain, by analyzing chemosensory event-related potentials (CSERPs, 64-channel recording with current source density analysis). Methodology/Principal Findings: In the first study cerebral stimulus processing was recorded from 28 non-socially anxious participants and in the second study from 16 socially anxious individuals. Each individual participated in two sessions, smelling sweat samples donated from either female or male donors (88 sessions; balanced session order). Most of the participants of both studies were unable to detect the stimuli olfactorily. In non-socially anxious females, CSERPs demonstrate an increased magnitude of the P3 component in response to chemosensory anxiety signals. The source of this P3 activity was allocated to medial frontal brain areas. In socially anxious females chemosensory anxiety signals require more neuronal resources during early pre-attentive stimulus processing (N1). The neocortical sources of this activity were located within medial and lateral frontal brain areas. In general, the event-related neuronal brain activity in males was much weaker than in females. However, socially anxious males processed chemosensory anxiety signals earlier (N1 latency) than the control stimuli collected during an ergometer training. Conclusions/Significance: It is concluded that the processing of chemosensory anxiety signals requires enhanced neuronal energy. Abstract: The present study aimed to investigate whether withdrawal related behavior is activated in the context of chemosensory anxiety signals. Moreover, it was examined whether chemosensory perception of social stress is modulated by the degree of social anxiety. Axillary sweat was collected from students, awaiting an oral examination at the university (anxiety condition) and from the same students in a sport control condition. The chemosensory stimuli were presented to 32 participants (16 socially anxious) via an olfactometer during inhalation (duration=3s). 102dB white noise bursts served as startle probes. During a single session only male or female axillary sweat was presented, therefore, all participants were tested in two separate sessions. Even though the chemosensory stimuli were perceived at the perceptual threshold level, participants could identify (forced choice) the emotion of the donors in the anxiety condition. In the context of chemosensory anxiety signals the acoustic startle reflex was significantly augmented as compared to startle responses obtained in the context of sport sweat (p =0.002). This effect was more pronounced in socially anxious than in non-anxious participants. It is concluded that human motor systems automatically adapt to chemosensory stress signals. This adaptation is neither dependent on the gender of the odor donor nor on the gender of the perceiver, but is intensified in socially anxious participants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Several analytical techniques have shown use for the identification of historical synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) in samples. However, as the techniques differ—for example, in the extent of sample intervention, modes of detection, and limits of detection—so do they differ in results and insights into the colorants and colorant derivatives in a sample. Liquid chromatography (LC) is infrequently applied to the task of SOP identification, despite its ability to differentiate similar molecules, detect at low concentrations, and separate of complex samples and its established usage for organic dyes. This research compared results obtained with micro-Raman spectroscopy and pyrolysis gas chromatography with results from ultra-high performance (UP)LC coupled with photodiode array detection (UPLC-PDA), and high resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) to judge the quantity and quality of SOP information obtained by each technique. In this study, 67 historical samples were analyzed from historical samples and sample books (1918–1950), consisting of 10 oil paint tubes, 45 oil-bound paint-outs, and 13 gum-bound pigment washes using sample sizes less than a milligram. As few studies have used LC for SOP identification, special attention is also paid to issues around sample preparation and interpretation of results from UPLC-PDA and UPLC-PDA-HRMS results. Finally, archival sources and other contemporary documents are used to contextualize and evaluate the plausibility of the analytical results. The results indicate that specific combinations of analytical techniques are required for confident SOP identifications. While Raman results were accurate and independent of sample solubility, they relied heavily on database completeness and were not sensitive to mixtures or differences in relative amounts of SOPs. Abstract: Although olfactory identification deficits in schizophrenia have been repeatedly demonstrated, some studies indicate that schizophrenia patients may also show an olfactory hypersensitivity. In addition, recent evidence points to impaired odor hedonics in schizophrenia. It was the aim of the present study to investigate olfactory information processing in schizophrenia patients with positive symptoms, by means of chemosensory event-related potential (CSERP) analysis. To control for modality-specific effects, these data were compared to visual event-related potentials (VERP), and in order to control for disorder-specific effects, the schizophrenia patients were compared to healthy controls as well as to patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). In each group, nine subjects were investigated. During EEG recording (32 scalp locations) two odors (positive valence: phenyl-ethylalcohol, negative valence: isobutyraldehyde) were presented using the constant flow method. Afterwards, two colors (red, yellow) were presented. The schizophrenia patients responded to both odors with shorter CSERP latencies than healthy controls and MDD-patients. This effect was most pronounced for the early processing (N1 component) of the emotionally negative odor. However, in response to colors, schizophrenia patients showed increased N1 latencies and a reduced P3 amplitude. Abstract: ATM gene alterations have been described in various lymphoproliferative malignancies suggesting that ATM contributes to lymphomagenesis. Using multiplex ligation-dependant probe amplification (MLPA), we screened 61 childhood lymphoid malignancies for ATM genomic deletion/duplication. Five samples were found to have a complete deletion or duplication. All the three deletions were found in B-precursor ALL (15%), two were submicroscopic, not detected by standard cytogenetic studies. These observations indicate that as in adult ALL, complete ATM submicroscopic deletion is frequent in childhood B-precursor ALL. As previously hypothesized, these results suggest that ATM may act as a tumor suppressor gene in the pathogenesis of childhood B-precursor ALL. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Florida manatees ( Trichechus manatus latirostris) are marine mammals that inhabit the coastal waters and rivers of the southeastern USA, primarily Florida. Previous studies have shown that Florida manatees have low mitochondrial DNA variability, suggesting that nuclear DNA loci are necessary for discriminatory analyses. Here we report 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci with an average of 4.2 alleles per locus, and average heterozygosity of 50.1%. Abstract: ATM gene alterations and impaired ATM protein expression have been described in various adult lymphoproliferative malignancies, suggesting that ATM contributes to lymphomagenesis. The present study investigated the prevalence of ATM gene and ATM protein expression alterations in sporadic childhood non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Twenty-seven cases of NHL were screened for ATM mutations by denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC). Direct and indirect criteria, including in silico tools, were used to classify the gene alterations. The methylation status of the ATM promoter CpG island was determined in 25 samples; ATM protein expression was assessed by Western blot in 9 lymphomas. ATM alterations were detected in 12 NHLs (44%). Ten different heterozygous base substitutions were identified in 10 NHLs (37%). Five samples (19%) were found to harbor a gene alteration considered to be a mutation or a rare variant potentially pathogenic. In one case, an ATM mutation was found in the germline. Four NHLs (44%) showed reduced or absent ATM protein expression. Except for one sample, no definite genetic or epigenetic alteration was identified to account for impaired ATM protein expression. These observations document a high prevalence of ATM gene and protein expression alterations, suggesting that ATM is involved in childhood NHL. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Studies on subjective body odour ratings suggest that humans exhibit preferences for human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-dissimilar persons. However, with regard to the extreme polymorphism of the HLA gene loci, the behavioural impact of the proposed HLA-related attracting signals seems to be minimal. Furthermore, the role of HLA-related chemosignals in same- and opposite-sex relations in humans has not been specified so far. Here, we investigate subjective preferences and brain evoked responses to body odours in males and females as a function of HLA similarity between odour donor and smeller. We show that pre-attentive processing of body odours of HLA-similar donors is faster and that late evaluative processing of these chemosignals activates more neuronal resources than the processing of body odours of HLA-dissimilar donors. In same-sex smelling conditions, HLA-associated brain responses show a different local distribution in male (frontal) and female subjects (parietal). The electrophysiological results are supported by significant correlations between the odour ratings and the amplitudes of the brain potentials. We conclude that odours of HLA-similar persons function as important social warning signals in inter- and intrasexual human relations. In this study, it is hypothesized that a planned increase in the dose of recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-EPO) can prevent transfusion in very low birth weight infants. Two different regimens of rh-EPO were administrated, one consisting in increasing dosage up to 5000 U/kg/wk, according to the individual reticulocytes response, and the second in a standard therapy of 1250 U/kg/wk. Fifty-one infants participated. Despite a significant higher reticulocytosis, the study was prematurely terminated due to the results of an interim analysis showing that transfusion was not avoided by increasing the rh-EPO. No significant differences were found between the two regimens concerning transfusion rate, volume transfused, gain in weight, and adverse effects. We developed an in vitro translation extract from Krebs-2 cells that translates the entire open reading frame of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) strain H77 and properly processes the viral protein precursors when supplemented with canine microsomal membranes (CMMs). Translation of the C-terminal portion of the viral polyprotein in this system is documented by the synthesis of NS5B. Evidence for posttranslational modification of the viral proteins, the N-terminal glycosylation of E1 and the E2 precursor (E2-p7), and phosphorylation of NS5A is presented. With the exception of NS3, efficient generation of all virus-specific proteins is CMM dependent. A time course of the appearance of HCV products indicates that the viral polyprotein is cleaved cotranslationally. A competitive inhibitor of the NS3 protease inhibited accumulation of NS3, NS4B, NS5A, and NS5B, but not that of NS2 or structural proteins. CMMs also stabilized HCV mRNA during translation. Finally, the formyl-[35S]methionyl moiety of the initiator tRNAMet was incorporated exclusively into the core protein portion of the polyprotein, demonstrating that translation initiation in this system occurs with high fidelity. This article focuses on medical-axis-based cartograms, which is a method for generating cartograms that combines iterative relocation of a map's vertices with medical-axis-based transformations retains the input map's topology. In data visualization, an area cartogram distorts a map by resizing its regions according to some external geography-related parameter, such as population or epidemiological data. Cartograms are difficult to draw by hand because it's difficult to simultaneously optimize shape and area error while preserving the original map's topology. Automated methods for drawing cartograms have therefore received considerable interest. For a cartogram to be effective, an observer should be able to quickly relate the displayed data to the original map. Intuitive recognition depends on preserving basic properties such as shape, orientation, and contiguity. This, however, is difficult to achieve, because it's impossible, in the general case, to retain even the original map's topology. Even if one accept some error in shape and area in the cartogram, what remains is still a hard simultaneous optimization problem for which known algorithms are prohibitively time consuming. It is controversial whether or not humans convey specific compounds within their body odours which can potentially affect the physiology and behaviour of others. Such compounds are called pheromones and have been discovered in many other species, including mammals. It has been suggested that humans might have a special organ within their nose that can transmit such chemosensory information. However, the evidence for this organ is highly questionable. In any case, the main olfactory system is a highly diverse system, capable of transmitting pheromonal information. So far, no single substance has been found that acts as a chemical messenger for erotic attraction. On the other hand, studies investigating the pheromonal properties of natural complex body odour have proven that it does deliver information about the sender and that it has an effect on the physiology and likely behaviour of other humans. Chemosensory communication of anxiety is a common phenomenon in vertebrates and improves perceptual and responsive behaviour in the perceiver in order to optimize ontogenetic survival. A few rating studies reported a similar phenomenon in humans. Here, we investigated whether subliminal face perception changes in the context of chemosensory anxiety signals. Axillary sweat samples were taken from 12 males while they were waiting for an academic examination and while exercising ergometric training some days later. 16 subjects (eight females) participated in an emotional priming study, using happy, fearful and sad facial expressions as primes (11.7 ms) and neutral faces as targets (47 ms). The pooled chemosensory samples were presented before and during picture presentation (920 ms). In the context of chemosensory stimuli derived from sweat samples taken during the sport condition, subjects judged the targets significantly more positive when they were primed by a happy face than when they were primed by the negative facial expressions (P = 0.02). In the context of the chemosensory anxiety signals, the priming effect of the happy faces was diminished in females (P = 0.02), but not in males. It is discussed whether, in socially relevant ambiguous perceptual conditions, chemosensory signals have a processing advantage and dominate visual signals or whether fear signals in general have a stronger behavioural impact than positive signals. In animals, chemosensory communication is successfully used to transmit behaviourally relevant information, e.g. information about sexual status, danger and social organisation. In many instances pheromones might have evolved from hormone-like substances. Consequently, a large number of studies have been carried out in humans, in order to investigate possible pheromonal properties of androgen steroids. Besides discussing the production and perception of androgen steroids, it will primarily be questioned whether their perception can alter mood and behaviour in humans. Therefore, a study has been carried out to investigate whether local preferences can be altered through androstenone exposure. It is shown that heterosexual women and homosexual men prefer seats sprayed with androstenone. However, as this effect is positively correlated with the sensitivity to androstenone, the effect might be due to a general olfactory attraction of low androstenone concentrations. In regard to the conflicting results of studies on putative human pheromones, it will finally be discussed whether the perceptual context and the individual learning history of the perceiver contribute significantly to a successful communication of pheromonal information. Inherited biallelic mutations of the ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated) gene cause ataxia-telangiectasia, a rare autosomal recessive disorder associated with a high incidence of childhood leukaemias and lymphomas, suggesting that ATM gene alterations may be involved in lymphomagenesis. Loss of heterozygosity at 11q22-23 (location of the ATM gene) is a frequent event in sporadic lymphoid tumours, and several studies have reported a high prevalence of ATM gene alterations in diverse sporadic lymphoproliferative disorders, adding evidence to the postulated contribution of ATM in the pathogenesis of these tumours. The aim of the present study was to investigate the similarities and differences in the olfactory and visual processing of emotional stimuli in healthy subjects and in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Twenty-five inpatients were investigated after admission to the psychiatric clinic. Fifteen of them participated a second time, shortly before their discharge from the hospital. A group of healthy subjects, matched according to age and sex, served as a control. Chemsosensory event-related potentials (CSERPs) were recorded using the constant flow method. In addition, event-related potentials (ERPs), in response to colors and emotional slides, were obtained to control modality and emotion-specific effects. The subjects' task was to discriminate the colors (red/yellow) and odors (phenyl-ethyl alcohol = rose/isobutyraldehyde = rotten butter) according to their quality and to judge the valence of the emotional slides (IAPS slides). The EEG was recorded from 32 scalp locations. At the beginning of the therapy, visual stimulus processing was attenuated in depressive subjects at a relatively late processing level (reduced amplitudes of the P3 and pSW in response to colors and emotional slides), whereas olfactory stimulus processing had already been affected at an early level (reduced amplitudes of the P2 and P3-1 peaks in MDD patients). However, after successful medical treatment, ERPs did not differentiate between depressive patients and healthy controls. We discuss whether functional deviations within the primary olfactory cortex are responsible for the lower olfactory sensitivity, as well as for the altered emotional stimulus processing in MDD patients. Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an emerging global epidemic. The development of effective HCV antiviral therapeutics continues to be a daunting challenge owing to the absence of adequate animal models and tissue-culture systems for analysis and propagation of the virus. Despite these obstacles, inhibitors of the replicative elements of HCV, immune modulators and non-specific hepatoprotective agents are being pursued and exciting progress has been made.
