Infrared (IR) small target detection in sky scenes is crucial for aerospace, border security, and atmospheric monitoring. Most current works are typically designed for generalized IR scenes, which may not be optimal for the specific scenario of sky backgrounds, particularly for detecting small and dim targets at long ranges. In these scenarios, the presence of heavy clouds usually causes significant false alarms due to factors such as strong edges, streaks, large undulations, and isolated floating clouds. To address these challenges, we propose an infrared dim and small target detection algorithm based on morphological filtering with dual-structure elements. First, we design directional dual-structure element morphological filters, which enhance the grayscale difference between the target and the background in various directions, thus highlighting the region of interest. The grayscale difference is then normalized in each direction to mitigate the interference of false alarms in complex cloud backgrounds. Second, we employ a dynamic scale awareness strategy, effectively preventing the loss of small targets near cloud edges. We enhance the target features by multiplying and fusing the local response values in all directions, which is followed by threshold segmentation to achieve target detection results. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves strong detection performance across various complex cloud backgrounds. Notably, it outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in detecting targets with a low signal-to-clutter ratio (MSCR ≤ 2). As of late, infrared (IR) small-target detection technology is broadly utilized in low-altitude monitoring frameworks, target-tracking frameworks, precise guidance frameworks and forest fire prevention frameworks. In this paper, we propose an infrared small-target detection strategy based on multi-directional multi-scale high-boost response (MDMSHB). First, an eight-direction filtering template is proposed, which can consider the directional information of the image and significantly suppress heterogeneous background such as cloud, linear interference and interface like ocean–sky background. Then, a map based on multi-directional multi-scale high-boost response (MDMSHB map) is calculated. Finally, a straightforward threshold segmentation technique is utilized to get the detection result. The simulation results comparing this method with the four state-of-the-art strategies in six sequences demonstrate that the proposed strategy can adequately suppress heterogeneous background and arbitrary noise. River extraction plays an important role in several applications such as monitoring and navigation, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is one of the major sensors of remote sensing. This paper proposes an algorithm to detect a river from high-resolution SAR images mainly based on the Frangi filter and shearlet features with the help of an active contour model (ACM). The Frangi filter is firstly applied to enhance the river and then the shearlet features are computed by the shearlet transform. A rule of feature selection is then proposed to acquire the corresponding features of the river. Finally, binarization and an active contour model are implemented to extract the river. In earth observation systems, especially in the detection of small and weak targets, the detection and recognition of long-distance infrared targets plays a vital role in the military and civil fields. However, there are a large number of high radiation areas on the earth's surface, in which cirrus clouds, as high radiation areas or abnormal objects, will interfere with the military early warning system. In order to improve the performance of the system and the accuracy of small target detection, the method proposed in this paper uses the suppression of the cirrus cloud as an auxiliary means of small target detection. An infrared image was modeled and decomposed into thin parts such as the cirrus cloud, noise and clutter, and low-order background parts. In order to describe the cirrus cloud more accurately, robust principal component analysis (RPCA) was used to get the sparse components of the cirrus cloud, and only the sparse components of infrared image were studied. The texture of the cirrus cloud was found to have fractal characteristics, and a random fractal based infrared image signal component dictionary was constructed. The k-cluster singular value decomposition (KSVD) dictionary was used to train the sparse representation of sparse components to detect cirrus clouds. Through the simulation test, it was found that the algorithm proposed in this paper performed better on the the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Precision-Recall (PR) curve, had higher accuracy rate under the same recall rate, and its F-measure value and Intersection-over-Union (IOU) value were greater than other algorithms, which shows that it has better detection effect. Thermal infrared (TIR) target tracking is a challenging task as it entails learning an effective model to identify the target in the situation of poor target visibility and clutter background. The sparse representation, as a typical appearance modeling approach, has been successfully exploited in the TIR target tracking. However, the discriminative information of the target and its surrounding background is usually neglected in the sparse coding process. To address this issue, we propose a mask sparse representation (MaskSR) model, which combines sparse coding together with high-level semantic features for TIR target tracking. We first obtain the pixel-wise labeling results of the target and its surrounding background in the last frame, and then use such results to train target-specific deep networks using a supervised manner. According to the output features of the deep networks, the high-level pixel-wise discriminative map of the target area is obtained. We introduce the binarized discriminative map as a mask template to the sparse representation and develop a novel algorithm to collaboratively represent the reliable target part and unreliable target part partitioned with the mask template, which explicitly indicates different discriminant capabilities by label 1 and 0. The proposed MaskSR model controls the superiority of the reliable target part in the reconstruction process via a weighted scheme. We solve this multi-parameter constrained problem by a customized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method. This model is applied to achieve TIR target tracking in the particle filter framework. To improve the sampling effectiveness and decrease the computation cost at the same time, a discriminative particle selection strategy based on kernelized correlation filter is proposed to replace the previous random sampling for searching useful candidates. Our proposed tracking method was tested on the VOT-TIR2016 benchmark. A novel method based on multiscale and multidirectional feature fusion in the shearlet transform domain and kurtosis maximization for detecting the dim target in infrared images with a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and serious interference caused by a cluttered and non-uniform background is presented in this paper. First, an original image is decomposed using the shearlet transform with translation invariance. Second, various directions of high-frequency subbands are fused and the corresponding kurtosis of fused image is computed. The targets can be enhanced by strengthening the column with maximum kurtosis. Then, processed high-frequency subbands on different scales of images are merged. Finally, the dim targets are detected by an adaptive threshold with a maximum contrast criterion (MCC). The experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance for infrared target detection in comparison with the nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) method. To improve the detection ability of infrared small targets in complex backgrounds, a novel method based on non-convex rank approximation minimization joint l2,1 norm (NRAM) was proposed. Due to the defects of the nuclear norm and l1 norm, the state-of-the-art infrared image-patch (IPI) model usually leaves background residuals in the target image. To fix this problem, a non-convex, tighter rank surrogate and weighted l1 norm are instead utilized, which can suppress the background better while preserving the target efficiently. Considering that many state-of-the-art methods are still unable to fully suppress sparse strong edges, the structured l2,1 norm was introduced to wipe out the strong residuals. Furthermore, with the help of exploiting the structured norm and tighter rank surrogate, the proposed model was more robust when facing various complex or blurry scenes. To solve this non-convex model, an efficient optimization algorithm based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) plus difference of convex (DC) programming was designed. Extensive experimental results illustrate that the proposed method not only shows superiority in background suppression and target enhancement, but also reduces the computational complexity compared with other baselines. Abstract In the particle filter framework, the sparse representation method models object tracking by predicting the likelihood of particles with respect to target templates. However, in most tracking methods, the spatio-temporal relationships of different templates have been neglected. This method applies the reverse sparse representation in multi-task learning, thus takes advantage of the temporal information and spatial continuity of a series of templates. Adding a predesigned weight matrix can reflect the temporal information, and make the new entrant templates have a greater influence on atoms' selection. To solve the locally weighted reverse joint sparse model (LWRJM), we design a modified smooth l 0, 2 algorithm which requires only a few iterations. The obtained sparse coding coefficients are mapped to a binary indicator vector by a statistic strategy, which is helpful to eliminate the contributions of the corrupted blocks and preserve the uncorrupted ones. Comparing with other state-of-the-art tracking methods on 100 challenging benchmark image sequences, the proposed tracker (LWRJM) outperforms other methods in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations. Background and objective: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), which is generally diagnosed by the presence of hemorrhages and hard exudates, is one of the most prevalent causes of visual impairment and blindness. Early detection of hard exudates (HEs) in color fundus photographs can help in preventing such destructive damage. However, this is a challenging task due to high intra-class diversity and high similarity with other structures in the fundus images. Most of the existing methods for detecting HEs are based on characterizing HEs using hand crafted features (HCFs) only, which can not characterize HEs accurately. Deep learning methods are scarce in this domain because they require large-scale sample sets for training which are not generally available for most routine medical imaging research. Methods: To address these challenges, we propose a novel methodology for HE detection using deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) and multi-feature joint representation. Specifically, we present a new optimized mathematical morphological approach that first segments HE candidates accurately. Then, each candidate is characterized using combined features based on deep features with HCFs incorporated, which is implemented by a ridge regression-based feature fusion. This method employs multi-space-based intensity features, geometric features, a gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM)-based texture descriptor, a gray-level size zone matrix (GLSZM)-based texture descriptor to construct HCFs, and a DCNN to automatically learn the deep information of HE. Finally, a random forest is employed to identify the true HEs among candidates. Results: The proposed method is evaluated on two benchmark databases. It obtains an F-score of 0.8929 with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.9644 on the e-optha database and an F-score of 0.9326 with an AUC of 0.9323 on the HEI-MED database. These results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Our model also proves to be suitable for clinical applications based on private clinical images from a local hospital. Conclusions: This newly proposed method integrates the traditional HCFs and deep features learned from DCNN for detecting HEs. It achieves a new state-of-the-art in both detecting HEs and DR screening. The infrared search and track (IRST) system has been widely used, and the field of infrared small target detection has also received much attention. Based on this background, this paper proposes a novel infrared small target detection method based on non-convex optimization with Lp-norm constraint (NOLC). The NOLC method strengthens the sparse item constraint with Lp-norm while appropriately scaling the constraints on low-rank item, so the NP-hard problem is transformed into a non-convex optimization problem. First, the infrared image is converted into a patch image and is secondly solved by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). In this paper, an efficient solver is given by improving the convergence strategy. The experiment shows that NOLC can accurately detect the target and greatly suppress the background, and the advantages of the NOLC method in detection efficiency and computational efficiency are verified.
