Sleep insufficiency is a risk factor for mental and physical ill-health. In recent years, research has attributed sleep insufficiency to problematic smartphone use (PSU). In addition, research has indicated a relationship between sleep and the construct of mental toughness (MT). However, previous research exploring the relationship between sleep, PSU and MT has relied on selfreport measures. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the tentative links between sleep, PSU and MT by gathering objective data. 2053 participants completed measures of sleep quality, PSU and MT. Objective smartphone usage data were collected using pre-installed smartphone applications. A sub-sample of 614 participants provided sleep duration data from validated sleep tracking devices. In line with previous research, sleep quality was found to correlate weakly with both MT and PSU. While several significant correlations emerged when objective data were explored, in all cases, the effect sizes were negligible. This study does not support the claim that PSU has a clinically meaningful impact upon sleep duration. Both pro-establishment Christians, who support 'obeying the authority' (Romans 13), and pro-democracy Christians, who participated in the 2014–20 protests, want what is best for Hong Kong and truest to their Christian faith, but they understand those aims differently. The former believe social stability is a way to create space for Christian faith to flourish, while the latter judge that we need to break the current unjust system for Christian faith to begin flourishing. After conducting interviews with lay Christians, we found that both sides can struggle to communicate their vision for faithful Christian political theology. One reason, which we explore here, is that the key theo-political concepts at issue—namely, protest, democracy, and rights—derive from the historical context of post-Christendom societies rooted in the Western Enlightenment tradition. Hong Kong is adjacent to that tradition, but not at home in it. Using the method of 'narrative portraiture,' we endeavor to explore their respective theologies. This method uses the participants' own stories, so that we, as researchers, are not speaking for Hong Kong Christians, but instead illuminating their own ideas. Presenting these lived theologies can remind us, as church leaders, that our congregations are a source of God's revelation to us, even when they may lack the terms to communicate effectively, which is why we should not forget to listen to the "average Jane." Anterior Cruciate Ligament rehabilitation is a lengthy process and requires appropriate goal setting strategies to help optimize patient and athlete outcomes. From a global perspective, ACL injury incidences are continuing to rise, with Australia and the USA having one of the highest incidences of ACL injury rates in the athletic population. In addition, physiotherapists are expected by their professional regulatory body to effectively use goal setting practices. Theoretical Goal Setting Model consisting of three phases: 1) Pre goal setting phase (empower); 2) goal implementation phase (strive); and 3) goal evaluation phase (attain). This model provides physiotherapists with a useful process so that key aspects of setting goals are considered and incoporporated. This model showcases a necessary path a physiotherapist and patient must journey together in order to enhance rehabilitation outcomes. This model will also advance the physiotherapists' awareness of the multi-stages of the patients goal desires, intentions and commitment to their rehabilitation. This model is a preliminary attempt to guide both practice, teaching, and research to ensure that goal setting practices in ACL rehabilitation are given an appropriate rehabilitative platform. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that adolescents consider the future consequences (CFC) of behaviours domain-specifically. In other words, rather than being a "future orientated person," it appears that the orientation varies within individuals, depending on the domain in question. The present study matched data gathered in Scottish school children (N = 451) on consideration of four future domains (Health and Well-being, Finances, Academics, and Global Warming) with sociodemographic and academic attainment data provided by Local Government. Results showed that deprivation was significantly related to academic attainment, and that this relationship was partially mediated by the combined effects of academic self-efficacy and on consideration of future consequences—academic. Further, domain specificity was supported by the fact that scores for consideration of future consequences—health and well-being,—finance, and—global warming did not partially mediate the deprivation-attainment relationship. Research into temporal psychology, and in particular its relationship with health behaviors, has grown exponentially in recent years. Accordingly, studies have shown that how individuals think and feel about the past, present, and future, is significantly related to alcohol-use behaviors. This has been shown to be particularly true where studies have applied person-centered analyses rather than just bivariate analyses. The present study sought to examine the relationship between scores on one temporal psychology measure (The Domain-Specific Consideration of Future Consequences [CFC] scale) and alcohol use behaviors in a large sample of adolescents in the United Kingdom (N = 2,199; 42.4% female). Scores on the CFC measure were operationalized both domain-specifically, and by means of cluster analyses. In bivariate analyses, reduced likelihood of past month consumption of a full drink and Heavy Episodic Drinking were significantly associated with CFC-scores, but did not appear to be domain-specific. In unadjusted analyses, CFC cluster membership was significantly related to alcohol use variables. However, when adjusted for sex, location, and sensation seeking, the result for Heavy Episodic Drinking became non-significant. Results are discussed in the context of current temporal psychology. In this paper published in the American Journal of Psychotherapy in 1956, John Weir Perry lays out a Jungian view of schizophrenia as an irruption of symbolic archetypal images and processes into the field of consciousness. These symbols represent the essence of the psychotic process and can point to a healing process. More specifically, the symbols of catatonic schizophrenia almost invariably are found to contain a death and rebirth pattern as illustrated in the case of a hospitalized patient with whom he worked over a period of six months. Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are a common injury that occurs in both the sporting and non‐sporting population. Goal setting is said to be an effective psychological tool within ACL rehabilitation and is commonly used by physiotherapists. To date, literature surrounding goal setting practices is under analysed in relation to qualitative research. Purpose: The central aim of this study was to explore UK physiotherapists understanding, experiences and training towards goal setting practices used in ACL rehabilitation and whether they are effective. Method: Semi‐structured interviews involving 24 participants across three specific areas including: National Health Service, elite sport and academia were conducted using an inductive approach. Data analysis included thematic analysis with triangulation and a comprehensive multi‐staged analysis process to enhance trustworthiness, whilst respecting ethical considerations. Results/Discussion: Participants from all three areas of practice tended to use the same approach which was SMART goals. All participants lacked any theoretical understanding of goals but would welcome further training in the field. Participants were missing important aspects of setting goals such as not addressing expectations and underutilising feedback. Conclusion: These findings suggest that a call for more psychological training is clearly warranted in both the physiotherapy curriculum and within post graduate CPD training. Creating a specialist interest group (e.g. physiotherapists interested in psychology) may help share good psychological practices and overall enhance understanding in this field. Grounded in Lazarus's (1991, 1999, 2000) cognitive-motivational-relational theory of emotions, we tested a model of achievement goals, stress appraisals, emotions, and coping. We predicted that precompetitive achievement goals would be associated with appraisals, appraisals with emotions, and emotions with coping in our model. The mediating effects of emotions among the overall sample of 827 athletes and two stratified random subsamples were also explored. The results of this study support our proposed model in the overall sample and the stratified subsamples. Further, emotion mediated the relationship between appraisal and coping. Mediation analyses revealed that there were indirect effects of pleasant and unpleasant emotions, which indicates the importance of examining multiple emotions to reveal a more accurate representation of the overall stress process. The present study focused on demographic and personality differences in the use of 30 defense mechanisms in adolescents with personality psychopathology and explored the hierarchical organization of personality traits based on the adaptiveness of defensive functioning. A total of 102 self-referred adolescent outpatients were interviewed and assessed on defense mechanisms and personality traits using the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scales and the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure 200 for Adolescents, respectively. Age and gender differences were found throughout the hierarchy. Pearson's correlations revealed a hierarchical organization of emerging personality disorders (PDs) in adolescence. More adaptive defenses were clearly associated with healthier personality style, whereas more pathological personality styles such as those with borderline traits were characterized by more rigid and maladaptive defenses. Dissociation was also associated with maladaptive personality types. Identifying the defenses associated with emerging personality disorders may inform the unconscious function of defense mechanisms in specific PDs. The F4 algorithm re-imagines Buchberger's algorithm as the row reduction of a Macaulay matrix: each row corresponds to a polynomial; each reduction of one row by another corresponds to one step of reducing an S-polynomial; and any row that completes reduction with a new pivot position corresponds to a new element of the basis. On the other hand, each column corresponds to a term, so that while it is common in linear algebra to exchange a matrix's columns during row reduction, this has not been done in F4-style algorithms, as it runs the risk of producing an incorrect result. We show that it is possible to adapt an analogous, "dynamic" technique for Buchberger-style algorithms to F4-style algorithms, and we examine its behavior on some commonly referenced benchmark ideals. The purpose of this paper was to assess a model, which included dispositional coping, coping effectiveness, and cognitive social maturity. We predicted that cognitive social maturity would have a direct effect on coping effectiveness, and also an indirect impact via dispositional coping. Two hundred forty-five adolescent athletes completed measures of dispositional coping, coping effectiveness, and cognitive social maturity, which has three dimensions: conscientiousness, peer influence on behavior, and rule following. We present experimental images of a nuclear reactor, the AGN-201M reactor at the University of New Mexico, using data measured with a particle tracker built from a set of sealed drift tubes. Researchers continue to attempt to resolve the psychometric problems associated with the five-factor Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory through the development of shortened forms of the scale. These atheoretical efforts have been data driven and have resulted in scales whose reliability and validity have not been subsequently supported. The purpose of this paper was to explore the factorial validity and reliability of new short scales on samples independent from which they were developed. We used data from five different samples in four different countries (Australia, Britain, Slovenia, and the United States) to examine the psychometric validity and reliability of three recently developed scales, the ZTPI-20, ZTPI-17, and ZTPI-15. Results regarding validity were equivocal for all scales and reliability coefficients were suboptimal in all samples. We conclude by stressing the necessity for a theoretically driven approach to enhancing the psychometric assessment of time perspective rather than simply sacrificing reliability or discriminant validity for improved model fit in a shorter scale. This paper focuses on a neglected area of school policy and practice: metacognition. As education becomes increasingly evidence-informed policy makers, school leaders and teachers are becoming increasingly research literate and have ready access to an ever-growing range of evidence about 'what works' in schools. Influential sources of evidence, such as the Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit, often indicate that teaching metacognition in schools can have a very positive effect on pupils' outcomes. In this paper, we examine over 50 studies to ascertain the effect of teaching metacognition in schools on pupils' outcomes and their wellbeing. Following our review it is clear that there is strong evidence indicating the when metacognition is effectively taught in schools then there is a very positive effect on pupil outcomes; there is less evidence about the relationship between teaching metacognition and pupil wellbeing, but the evidence which does exist is also very positive. Having identified that teaching metacognition can help improve pupil outcomes in schools, we then pose questions about the English government's attitudes towards evidence-based practice. We ask why the government adopts some policies and strategies which have an international evidence base, while not adopting other policies or strategies which have at least an equally strong evidence base. Recent critiques of methodological naturalism (MN) claim that it fails by conflicting with Christian belief and being insufficiently humble. We defend MN by tracing the real history of the debate, contending that the story as it is usually told is mythic. We show how MN works in practice, including among real scientists. The debate is a red herring. It only appears problematic because of confusion among its opponents about how scientists respond to experimental anomalies. Rapid, sensitive, and selective detection and identification of pathogenic bacteria is required in terms of food security. In this study, exogenous VOCs liberated by Salmonella strains have been identified and quantified via head space-solid phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) in milk samples. The specific enzymes targeted for detection and/or differentiation of Salmonella were C8 esterase, α-galactosidase and pyrrolidonyl peptidase using the following enzyme substrates: 2-chlorophenyl octanoate, phenyl α- d -galactopyranoside and L-pyrrollidonyl fluoroanilide, respectively. Detection of the exogenous VOCs, 2-chlorophenol, phenol and 3-fluoraniline was possible with typical limits of detection of 0.014, 0.045 and 0.005 μg/mL, respectively and correlation coefficients >0.99. The developed methodology was able to detect and identify Salmonella species within a 5 h incubation at 37 °C by the detection of the liberated VOCs. Professional running, derived from 19th century pedestrianism, is a gambling sport mostly confined to working men. Runners compete for prize money and, particularly, in the hope that they will win races as "dark horses which should ensure substantial winnings from the betting ring. This sport involves handicapping athletes to level ability differences between them and, in theory, gives each competitor an equal chance of winning. Competitors conceal their true potential and lose races, however, with the dual objectives of acquiring favorable handicaps, thereby increasing their chances of success in their targeted events and getting favorable odds from the bookmakers. People in the sport use numerous tactics of secrecy and deception to reduce the risk of discovery of their dark horse prospects. These substrates are monoglycoside derivatives of the metal chelators catechol, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) and 6,7-dibromo-2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (6,7-dibromo-DHN). When hydrolysed by appropriate bacterial enzymes these substrates produced coloured chelates in the presence of ammonium iron(III) citrate, thus enabling bacterial detection. A new rapid method for the detection of hydrogen sulfide from pathogenic bacteria is reported. The developed method, static headspace – multi-capillary column - gas chromatography - ion mobility spectrometry (SHS-MCC-GC-IMS), has been applied to detect hydrogen sulfide evolution from 61 bacteria. The developed method has been compared against a standard triple sugar iron (TSI) agar approach, and a modified single sugar iron (SSI) agar approach. Hydrogen sulfide detection by SHS-MCC-GC-IMS using an initial inoculum of 1–1.5 × 10 5  CFU/mL can be achieved within 6 h, after incubation at 37 °C, with a limit of detection of 1.6 ng/mL. Data for the standard agar method against the new instrumental approach, and the modified agar method against the new instrumental approach, are compared. The specificity for the new method compared against the standard method and the modified agar approach across all 61 strains was 85.2% and 88.5% respectively, and 86.7% and 91.3% across the 23 Salmonella strains tested. Within the study of temporal psychology, researchers have classified individuals as ‘past’, ‘present’, or ‘future’ depending on how they respond to items in a variety of scales. This labelling implicitly assumes that if an individual is ‘future’, they are equally ‘future’ in all domains of life. However, emerging research has suggested that orientation to the future might be domain-specific. Building on previous research with adolescents only, we used an adolescent ( N  = 243) sample, and a University ( N  = 173) sample to further examine the psychometric validity, internal consistency, and construct validity of the Domain Specific Consideration of Future Consequences (CFC) Scale. Results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis revealed acceptable validity and internal consistency for scale scores. Domain specificity was demonstrated via correlations between Domain Specific CFC scores and scores on other future-orientated constructs. Endorsing self-reported behavior in each domain was also associated with significantly higher scores on Domain Specific CFC factors, in models adjusted for future temporal focus score, subjective life expectancy, and both gender, and sample. With evidence emerging for the domain specificity of CFC scores, it may be time for this literature to examine domain specificity in all constructs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
