In this paper, we study the elastic properties of the entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn)O using experimental and first principles techniques. Our measurements of the indentation modulus on grains with a wide range of crystallographic orientations of the entropy-stabilized oxide revealed a high degree of elastic isotropy at ambient conditions. First principles calculations predict mild elastic anisotropy for the paramagnetic structure, which decreases when the system is considered to be non-magnetic. When the antiferromagnetic state of CoO, CuO, and NiO is accounted for in the calculations, a slight increase in elastic anisotropy is observed, suggesting a coupling between magnetic ordering and the orientation dependent elastic properties. Furthermore, an examination of the local structure reveals that the isotropy is favored through local ionic distortions of Cu and Zn—due to their tendencies to form tenorite and wurtzite phases. The relationships between the elastic properties of the multicomponent oxide and those of its constituent binary oxides are reviewed. These insights open up new avenues for controlling isotropy for technological applications through tuning composition and structure in the entropy-stabilized oxide or the high-entropy compounds in general. The dependence of the polarization texture topology in ferroelectric PbTiO3 nanoparticles, embedded in a dielectric matrix, on the particle shape and size was investigated with a time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach combined with coupled-physics finite-element-method based simulations. Particle shapes belonging to the superellipsoidal family were probed, including octahedral, cubic, and intermediate geometries. For each shape, a parametric sweep of particle sizes ranging from 2 to 40 nm was conducted, revealing a general trend for the texture transformations from a monodomain, through a vortex-like, to a multidomain state, as the size increases. Critical particle sizes for the texture instabilities were found to be strongly dependent on the particle shape, with octahedral particles undergoing transitions at much larger volumes, compared to the cubic particles. Furthermore, for each of the considered non-spherical shapes of appropriate size, it was possible to obtain multiple vortex-like textures whose paraelectric cores are aligned with every rotational axis of the particle point symmetry group. The shape-dependent metastability of the vortex-like textures opens up new avenues for controlling polarization at the nanoscale in a variety of technological applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A general approach for fitting Landau-Devonshire thermodynamic potentials directly from first principles is developed for simple displacive ferroelectric perovskite materials. As the first step, a PbTiO3 potential is parameterized completely from density functional theory calculations as a test case, under the only assumption that the transition between the non-polar and polar phases is of first order. The utility of this approach is assessed by comparing quantities characterizing the phase transition, dielectric and piezoelectric properties and equibiaxial strain-temperature phase diagrams with the predictions of several thermodynamic potentials parameterized from experimental data. In the second step, a similar parameterization is generated for a fictitious polar perovskite SnTiO3, enabling us to predictively evaluate an approximate 'equibiaxial strain-temperature-spontaneous polarization' phase diagram for its thin films. Epitaxial thin films of CuMnAs have recently attracted attention due to their potential to host relativistic antiferromagnetic spintronics and exotic topological physics. Here, we report on the structural and electronic properties of a tetragonal CuMnAs thin film studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). STM reveals a surface terminated by As atoms, with the expected semi-metallic behavior. An unexpected zigzag step edge surface reconstruction is observed with emerging electronic states below the Fermi energy. DFT calculations indicate that the step edge reconstruction can be attributed to an As deficiency that results in changes in the density of states of the remaining As atoms at the step edge. This understanding of the surface structure and step edges on the CuMnAs thin film will enable in-depth studies of its topological properties and magnetism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanostructured Ferritic Alloys (NFAs) containing oxide nanoparticles are prospective advanced structural materials in future fusion reactors. Lacking fusion neutron sources with an adequate flux, modeling is critical to understand radiation damage in the NFAs, including helium effects. Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLPs) have been demonstrated to be capable of describing atomic interactions in chemically complex systems with comparable accuracy to density functional theory (DFT) but with much less computational costs. Hence, MLPs are chosen to study He bubble accumulation in chemically complex NFAs. As a preliminary step, we develop a Fe–He potential, based on ∼ 10,000 atomic configurations. The developed MLP accurately predicts the bulk properties of BCC-Fe compared to DFT, including the lattice constant (2.832 Å), elastic constants (c 11 = 271 GPa, c 12 = 141 , c 44 = 93), and phonon frequencies (maximum error < 3.5%). The MLP predicts He binding energies in He n V bubbles and He n clusters with a mean absolute error (MAE) of only ∼ 70 meV, which is ∼ 3 to ∼ 5 times smaller than the MAE of binding energies estimated using empirical potentials. The MLP also accurately predicts the migration barrier of interstitial He (64 meV). Furthermore, the MLP correctly predicts the maximum number of He atoms (critical size) at which a He n V bubble (He n cluster) can kick-out a self-interstitial atom (SIA), forming a bigger He n V 2 bubble ( He n V bubble). Subsequently, we use the MLP to perform molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of temperature on the critical size of He n V bubbles and He n clusters. We find that the critical size decreases with increasing temperature — indicating that smaller bubbles and clusters can kick-out an SIA at higher temperatures, thereby escalating the He bubble growth. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to explore the binding between He and alloying solutes, impurities, and transmutation products expected in neutron irradiated nanostructured ferritic alloys (NFAs), here 14YWT is taken as an example. Elements that exhibit significant binding (attraction) with an interstitial He are: Y (binding energy = 0.46 eV), Mg (0.32), O (0.33), Ti (0.16), and C (0.15). Those that provide significant binding to a substitutional He are: O (1.44), Y (1.24), N (0.73), H (0.56), Mg (0.52), Ti (0.34), Si (0.34), C (0.33), Al (0.32), Ni (0.26), Ta (0.23), and Mn (0.16). The presence of these elements in Fe matrix could reduce the transport of He towards oxide particles, dislocations, and internal boundaries, and could promote He bubble nucleation in the matrix. For convenience, we compile existing binding energy data of He with He n and He n V (He-vacancy) clusters. Dissociation pathway analysis reveals that, in general, the most likely dissociation of a He n V cluster is by a sequential emission of individual He atoms. Furthermore, larger bubbles are more prone to dissociation than smaller ones. In addition, we estimate the binding energy (segregation energy) of He in bulk Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 (YTO) single crystal, YTO/Fe interface, and YTO particle embedded in Fe, with respect to interstitial He in Fe, from existing formation energies of He in these structures. We also compile available data of He binding with Fe self-interstitial atom (SIA), SIA clusters, and edge and screw dislocations. Note that given the absence of DFT data, the binding with SIA clusters and dislocations are gathered from simulations with empirical potentials. In this project, a computational investigation utilizing density functional theory methods is carried out to elucidate the differences in stereochemical lone-pair activity of Pb2+ and Sn2+ A-site ions in epitaxial polar ATiO3 perovskites. The contrasting tendencies for the lead- and tin-based compounds to form different phases--Amm2 for the former versus Cm for the latter-under biaxial tension are connected to the amount of charge concentrated within the lone pair lobes. Specifically, phases are energetically more preferable when as much charge as possible is dissipated out of the lobe, thus lowering the cost of Coulomb repulsions between the lone pair and the surrounding oxygen cage. Although a strong band-gap tuning was predicted in (fictitious) SnTiO3 during the tensile P4mm → Cm phase transformation [see W. D. Parker, J. M. Rondinelli, and S. M. Nakhmanson, Phys. Rev. B 84,245126 (2011)], we find the same effect to be considerably weaker in PbTiO3. The insights gained about the electronic-level underpinnings of transitional behavior in such lone-pair-active epitaxial ferroelectrics may be used in the design of a new generation of more efficient electromechanical and electrooptical devices. Tritium (T) and He diffusion in LiAlO 2 and LiAl 5 O 8 phases influences the performance of tritium producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs) by affecting the gas release, swelling and thermal conductivity of Li-bearing ceramic pellets. Frenkel pair defects and clusters created by irradiation can attract T and He interstitials and form clusters of the type H e i x L i , H e i x A l , H e i x O , T i x L i , T i x A l and T i x O , 1 ≤ x ≤ 4 in a Li, Al or O vacancy site (notation denotes x He or T atoms in a 1 Li, 1 Al or 1 O vacant site). The concentration and mobility of each of these clusters collectively contribute to the diffusion of the He and T gases in LiAlO 2 and LiAl 5 O 8. In this work, free energy cluster dynamics simulations implemented in the Centipede code, are used to obtain the concentration and diffusivities of these clusters which are then used to calculate the total diffusivity of T and He gases in LiAlO 2 and LiAl 5 O 8. The results show that diffusivity of T is at least one order of magnitude higher in LiAlO 2 as compared to that in LiAl 5 O 8 whereas He diffusion is 2–13 orders of magnitude higher in LiAlO 2 as compared to that in LiAl 5 O 8. There is a higher concentration of highly diffusive species (T interstitials and T i 03 L i for the case of tritium and H e i 01 L i , H e i 02 L i and H e i 03 L i for the case of He) in LiAlO 2 than in LiAl 5 O 8 which increase the total diffusion of T and He in LiAlO 2. Using the van der Waals density functional with C09 exchange (vdW-DF-C09), which has been applied to describing a wide range of dispersion-bound systems, we explore the physical properties of prototypical ABO3 bulk ferroelectric oxides. Surprisingly, vdW-DF-C09 provides a superior description of experimental values for lattice constants, polarization and bulk moduli, exhibiting similar accuracy to the modified Perdew-Burke-Erzenhoff functional which was designed specifically for bulk solids (PBEsol). The relative performance of vdW-DF-C09 is strongly linked to the form of the exchange enhancement factor which, like PBEsol, tends to behave like the gradient expansion approximation for small reduced gradients. These results suggest the general-purpose nature of the class of vdW-DF functionals, with particular consequences for predicting material functionality across dense and sparse matter regimes. The article focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a high-entropy oxide (HEO) called Iron(II) Oxide (FeO)-HEO, which contains divalent Manganese (Mn) and Iron (Fe) in a rocksalt crystal structure. Topics include the concept of HEOs and their unique compositional features, the challenge of introducing divalent Mn(II) and Fe(II) into a rocksalt HEO, and the phase stability of FeO-HEO under different conditions.
