Radiobiology is the science of studying the interaction between radiation and biological tissues and the effects of the first on the latter. In this paper, we present various Physico-Mathematical models used in Radiobiology, which have been developed in order to compare and quantify the effectiveness of different radiation regimens. Different researchers have developed empirical models based on experimental considerations and on a radiological foundation. In one application of ionizing radiation therapies, the studies were able to relate several important parameters, such as dose per fraction, total dose, and the treatment time needed to obtain a better therapeutic index. In this paper, we aim to describe and discuss a number of radiobiological aspects of the results obtained throughout past research, such as Isoeffect Curves, Nominal Standard Dose (NDS), time-dose fractionation factors (TDF), and cell survival curves. Background:Studies regarding the role of iron on linear growth have yielded heterogeneous results. Some trials indicate that iron supplementation of iron-replete infants leads to slower-length gain. However, little is known of the relation between iron status and linear growth in school-age children.Methods:We quantified plasma ferritin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and hemoglobin in 2714 children aged 5-12 years at recruitment into a cohort study. Height was measured periodically for a median of 30 months. Height-for-age Z-scores (HAZ) were calculated using the World Health Organization growth reference. Mixed effects models with restricted cubic splines were used to construct population HAZ-for-age growth curves for sex- and age-specific quartiles of each iron status indicator.Results:Ferritin and MCV were each inversely related to attained HAZ among boys after the adjustment for baseline age, baseline body mass index-for-age Z-score and socioeconomic status. There was a decreasing monotonic relation between quartiles of ferritin and estimated change in HAZ from ages 6 to 14 years (P trend=0.001); boys in the 4th quartile experienced a HAZ change that was 0.46 Z lower than that of boys in the 1st quartile (P=0.0006). Similarly, we observed smaller HAZ change among boys in the highest quartile of MCV in comparison with those in the 1st quartile (P trend=0.001). Hemoglobin was not related to linear growth in boys. None of the iron-status indicators were associated with linear growth in girls.Conclusions:Higher iron status, as indicated by ferritin and MCV, is related to slower linear growth in iron-replete school-age boys. In 2004, Bogotá's Secretary of Education (SED) initiated a snack program in public primary schools. A midmorning food ration was provided free of charge to children to supplement 30 and 50% of their daily requirements of energy and iron, respectively. The purpose of this study, an observational investigation of 3202 children ages 5-12 y, was to examine whether the snack program improved children's nutritional and health status. We measured micronutrient levels (plasma ferritin and vitamin B-12, and erythrocyte folate), anthropometry, and reported morbidity during the first semester of the 2006 school year. After adjusting for socioeconomic status and other school interventions, children at schools receiving the snack (n = 1803) had greater increases in plasma vitamin B-12 (42 pmol/L; P < 0.0001) from baseline to 3 mo of follow-up than children at schools not receiving the snack (n = 1399). They also experienced a smaller decrease in height-for-age Z-scores than children who did not receive the snack (P = 0.001). Provision of the SED snack was associated with significantly fewer reported days with morbidity symptoms (e.g. cough with fever, diarrhea with vomiting), 44% fewer doctor visits (P = 0.02), and 23% fewer days of school absenteeism (P = 0.03). The snack was not related to ferritin or folate levels. In conclusion, provision of a school-administered snack was related to improved vitamin B-12 status and linear growth and decreased reported morbidity. Although provision of the snack was not related to BMI changes over a 4-mo period, snack components such as candy and sugar-sweetened beverages should be replaced with healthier options, as the rates of child overweight in Colombia are not negligible. Background:While the majority of cases of nutritional anemia in developing countries are caused by iron deficiency, other micronutrient deficiencies may also be involved. In Colombia, it was recently reported that 38% of school children were anemic; yet, the rate of iron deficiency was only 3.6%.Objective:To determine if micronutrients other than iron were responsible for low hemoglobin concentrations in Colombian school children.Methods:We examined hemoglobin concentrations in relation to plasma ferritin, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and erythrocyte folate levels in a representative sample of 2812 low- and middle-income children (5–12 years) from Bogotá, Colombia.Results:In multivariate analysis, hemoglobin concentration was positively associated with child's age, mother's age, household's socioeconomic stratum, and family income. Low ferritin was related to 3.6 g/l lower hemoglobin concentration (95% confidence interval=−6.0, −1.3). Unexpectedly, we found an inverse trend in hemoglobin concentration by quartiles of erythrocyte folate; the adjusted hemoglobin concentration difference between the highest and lowest folate quartiles was −6.0 g/l (95% confidence interval=−7.2, −4.9; P for trend <0.0001). This difference was greatest among children with vitamin B12 concentration <148 pmol/l (−11.5 g/l), followed by children with vitamin B12 concentration 148–221 pmol/l (−7.7 g/l), and smallest in children with vitamin B12 concentration >221 pmol/l (−5.7 g/l); P for interaction=0.04.Conclusions:Hemoglobin concentration is inversely related to erythrocyte folate concentrations in a setting where folate fortification was adopted more than a decade ago. Objective: To examine correlates of home usage of commercially available cooking fats in Bogotá, Colombia and to determine their fatty acid composition.Design: Cross-sectional survey.Setting: Bogotá, Colombia.Subjects: A representative sample of low- and middle-income families (n 2408).Results: The types of fat primarily used for cooking at home were mixed vegetable oils (66 %), sunflower oil (21 %) and other oils/fats including margarine (13 %). In multivariate analysis, usage of sunflower oil as the primary cooking fat was positively related to home ownership, age of the father and health as a reason for choosing the main cooking fat, and inversely associated with the number of people per room and an index of household food insecurity. The trans fat content of sunflower oil was unexpectedly higher (mean 4.2 %, range 2.2-8.6) than that of the vegetable mixture oils (mean 3.1 %, range 1.1-6.5).Conclusions: Vegetable oils are the primary home cooking fats in Bogotá, Colombia. Higher socio-economic status is associated with usage of sunflower oil. Paradoxically, oblivious to the higher trans content of sunflower oil and the negligible amount of n-3 fatty acids, families commonly reported 'health' as a reason to choose sunflower over other oils. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra in samples of demineralized water, blood, and sanguineous plasma were obtained. For demineralized water, the spectra were analyzed before radiating and after irradiation, with a dosage of 5 Gy. The results show the presence of signals with values of g ≈ 2.13 and 2.41 in plasma, blood, and radiated water. Solanum torvum is a highly vigorous relative of eggplant that is resistant to a number of harmful soil-borne diseases and is compatible for grafting with eggplant. Being a potential rootstock, this plant frequently presents poor and erratic germination, which makes its practical use difficult. We used an L8 (2 7 ) orthogonal array design to evaluate the primary effects of seven factors (soaking of seeds, scarification with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), application of gibberellic acid (GA 3 ), use of potassium mitrate (KNO 3 ) as a moistening agent, cold stratification, application of a heat shock, and light irradiation during germination) at two levels (L0 and L1) using four germination parameters (early and final germination, germination rate and vigour index) in fresh S. torvum seeds. S. torvum seeds had a strong dormancy with no germination in the untreated seeds and high early and final germination (approximately 100%) in certain treatments. An evaluation of the main effects revealed highly positive effects on germination from seed soaking, and the use of GA 3 , KNO 3 , and light irradiation, whereas NaClO scarification had a negative effect. The application of cold stratification and heat shock treatments also had a positive effect on seed germination but to a lesser extent than the other treatments. An improved proposed protocol that consisted of subjecting seeds to soaking, the application of GA 3 and KNO 3 , cold stratification, heat shock, and light irradiation was validated and demonstrated to be highly effective, with seed germination success greater than 60% being observed at 3 days and final germination reaching a plateau at 6 days. A second validation experiment using a commercial growing substrate also showed a high emergence (approximately 50%) at 7 days and a final germination of approximately 80% was recorded with application of the improved protocol. The seed germination protocol that we have developed will facilitate the use of S. torvum as a rootstock for eggplant and its use in breeding programmes. The pepino ( Solanum muricatum ) is a solanaceous vegetatively propagated fruit crop of Andean origin. We provide a detailed description of phenological stages because it is of interest for pepino crop management and research. Given the increasing prominence of this crop, and the fact that it morphologically and developmentally variable, and different from other major solanaceous crops, we have developed a pepino specific BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt, CHemische Industrie) numerical scale. Nine principal stages are described for germination/rooting, leaf development, formation of side shoots, main shoot elongation, inflorescence emergence, flowering, development of fruit, ripening of fruit and seed, and senescence. Secondary stages (two-digit scale) have been identified for all principal stages. Complementary descriptions using mesostages (three-digit scale) have been developed for leaf development, formation of side shoots, inflorescence emergence, and flowering phenological stages. A description of all phenological stages combined with illustrations is provided. The utility of the BBCH scale has been validated by comparing several traits of agronomic interest at specific developmental stages in a collection of pepino local varieties, modern cultivars and wild relatives. The BBCH scale developed provides uniform criteria for the description, identification and selection of phenological stages of the pepino and will facilitate the management, breeding and conservation of genetic resources of this crop. Background/objectives:Studies in adults indicate that dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition may play a role in development of adiposity. Because adipocyte quantity is established between late childhood and early adolescence, understanding the impact of PUFAs on weight gain during the school-age years is crucial to developing effective interventions.Subjects/methods:We quantified N-3 and N-6 PUFAs in serum samples of 668 Colombian schoolchildren aged 5-12 years at the time of recruitment into a cohort study, using gas-liquid chromatography. Serum concentrations of N-3 (alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid) and N-6 PUFAs (linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, arachidonic acid) were determined as percentage total fatty acids. Children's anthropometry was measured annually for a median of 30 months. We used mixed-effects models with restricted cubic splines to construct population body mass index-for-age z-score (BAZ) growth curves for age- and sex-specific quartiles of each PUFA.Results:N-3 ALA was inversely related to BAZ gain after adjustment for sex, baseline age and weight status, as well as household socioeconomic level. Estimated BAZ change between 6 and 14 years among children in the highest quartile of ALA compared with those in the lowest quartile was 0.45 (95% confidence interval: 0.07, 0.83) lower (P-trend=0.006).Conclusions:N-3 ALA may be protective against weight gain in school-age children. Solanum incanum, the wild ancestor of eggplant, Solanum melongena, has been considered as a source of variation for high content of phenolic acid conjugates in breeding programmes aimed at improving the functional quality of eggplant. We have evaluated the morphological and phenolic acids content in an interspecific family including S. incanum ( P1), S. melongena ( P2), their interspecific hybrid ( F1), progeny from the selfing of the F1 ( F2) and the backcross of the F1 to P2 ( BC1P2). Many morphological differences were found between parents, while the F1 was intermediate for most traits. However, F1 plants were taller and pricklier and presented higher fruit flesh browning than any of the parents. F2 and BC1P2 were morphologically highly variable and the results obtained suggest that a rapid recovery of the characteristic combination of S. melongena traits can be achieved in a few backcross generations. Segregation for prickliness was found to be compatible with simple genetic control, prickliness being dominant over non-prickliness. A total of 16 phenolic acid conjugates were studied, of which chlorogenic acid (5- O-( E)-caffeoylquinic acid) was the most common compound in all samples, averaging 77.8% of all hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. Contents of total phenolic acid conjugates were much higher in S. incanum than in S. melongena fruit flesh, and no major differences were found in the profile of phenolic acids among parents. The interspecific hybrid ( F1) was intermediate between the two parents in phenolic acids content. Non-segregating generations presented considerable variation in phenolic acids content, but the range of variation was wider in segregating F2 and BC1P2 generations. Additive genetic effects were the most important in explaining the results obtained for the phenolic acids content. A number of BC1P2 plants presented a good combination of phenolic acids content and fruit weight or flesh browning. Overall, the results demonstrate that improvement of functional quality in S. melongena can be obtained using S. incanum as a donor of alleles for high phenolic acids content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dosimetry with MOSFET detectors allows us to verify the dose received by a patient, detecting a possible sub or over dosage at the beginning of the radiation treatment or during the course of it. In such a way, those corrections can be made on subsequent fractions. This contributes to the evaluation of uncertainties on the planning and delivery of dose to the target volume and organs at risk. At the same time, it allows to detect possible abnormalities on the operation of radiation emitting equipment. The purpose of this work is to show the viability of a quality assurance routine using a Mosfet system. BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence suggests that populations with high fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption have a lower risk for childhood obesity, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. There are no studies that address the correlates of FV intake in Mexican children; therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the frequency of FV consumption by children in Mexico City's low income state schools and their personal (preferences, expectancy, knowledge and self-efficacy) and environmental (accessibility and person in charge of cooking at home) correlates. METHODS: A validated questionnaire to assess accessibility, expectancy, self-efficacy, preference and knowledge; and a 2-day dietary recall were used to assess the FV intake and its correlates in 327 children. Statistical analysis included chi-square and stepwise logistic regression. RESULTS: Average consumption of FV was once a day with a higher proportion of girls consuming FV 3 or more times per day (15.2% versus 6.7%; P < 0.01). The environmental factors that influenced a higher consumption of FV were the mother being responsible for cooking at home (P < 0.02) and accessibility to FV (P < 0.01); whereas the personal factors were self-efficacy (P < 0.05) and preference (P < 0.03) to vegetables. CONCLUSION: Correlates of fruit and vegetable consumption in children from Mexico City's State Schools were being female and accessibility to fruits and vegetables. Home and school environments are decisive for the children to increase FV consumption. Creative ways to encourage FV consumption in boys should be explored. Helicotylenchus are root parasites of cultivated and noncultivated plants. Species identification can be difficult because the nematode shares several diagnostic characters and exhibits an important interspecific variability. Species recognition is essential for planning appropriate control strategies or preventing the spread of these nematodes to other areas. In this work, morphological and morphometric characters from a single population were evaluated. Molecular analysis of D2-D3 of the 28s-rDNA and the 5.8s-ITS2 regions by PCR generated two new sequences that were deposited in Genbank. In addition, identification of the species was supported by phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian inference. Aims To isolate and identify TNT-transforming cultures from explosive-contaminated soils with the ability to produce biosurfactants. Methods and Results Bacteria (pure and mixed cultures) were selected based on their ability to transform TNT in minimum media with TNT as the sole nitrogen source and an additional carbon source. TNT-transforming bacteria were identified by 16S r RNA gene sequencing. TNT transformation rates were significantly lower when no additional carbon or nitrogen sources were added. Surfactant production was enabled by the presence of TNT. Fourteen cultures were able to transform the explosive (>50%); of these, five showed a high transformation capacity (>90%), and six produced surfactants. Conclusions All explosive-transforming cultures contained Proteobacteria of the genera Achromobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas, Sphingobium, Raoultella, Rhizobium and Methylopila. These cultures transformed TNT when an additional carbon source was added. Remarkably, Achromobacter spanius S17 and Pseudomonas veronii S94 have high TNT transformation rates and are surfactant producers. Significance and Impact of the Study TNT is a highly toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic nitroaromatic explosive; therefore, bioremediation to eliminate or mitigate its presence in the environment is essential. TNT-transforming cultures that produce surfactants are a promising method for remediation. The disease caused by Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus ( ToLCNDV), which is naturally transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, causes important economic losses in cucurbit crops. The availability of simple and efficient inoculation protocols and detection methods is necessary for screening varieties and germplasm collections as well as for breeding populations. We evaluated the infectivity of ToLCNDV inocula prepared using three different buffers for mechanical sap inoculation in a susceptible variety of zucchini. We found that inoculum prepared with buffer III, which contains polyvinylpyrrolidone, is highly efficient for mechanical inoculation, with 100% of plants displaying severe symptoms 21 days post-inoculation. Using this buffer, we mechanically inoculated 19 commercial varieties of cucurbit crops (six of cucumber, six of melon and seven of zucchini), evaluated the evolution of symptoms and diagnosed infection using nine different ToLCNDV detection methods (four based on serology, four based on molecular hybridization and one based on PCR detection). The results revealed that all varieties are susceptible, although cucumber varieties display less severe symptoms than those of melon or zucchini. All detection methods were highly efficient (more than 85% of plants testing positive) in melon and zucchini, but in cucumber, the percentage of positive plants detected with serology and molecular hybridization methods ranged from 20.4% with Squash leaf curl virus ( SLCV) antiserum, to 78.5% with DNA extract hybridization. Overall, the best detection results were obtained with PCR, with 92.6%, 92.4% and 98.4% cucumber, melon and zucchini plants, respectively, testing positive. When considering the overall results in the three crops, the best serology and molecular hybridization methods were those using Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus ( WmCSV) antiserum and DNA extract, respectively. The inoculation methodology developed and the information on detection methods are of great relevance for the selection and breeding of varieties of cucurbit crops that are tolerant or resistant to ToLCNDV. Background: Solanum incanum is a close wild relative of S. melongena with high contents of bioactive phenolics and drought tolerance. S. aethiopicum is a cultivated African eggplant cross-compatible with S. melongena. Despite their great interest in S. melongena breeding programs, the genomic resources for these species are scarce. Results: RNA-Seq was performed with NGS from pooled RNA of young leaf, floral bud and young fruit tissues, generating more than one hundred millions raw reads per species. The transcriptomes were assembled in 83,905 unigenes for S. incanum and in 87,084 unigenes for S. aethiopicum with an average length of 696 and 722 bp, respectively. The unigenes were structurally and functionally annotated based on comparison with public databases by using bioinformatic tools. The single nucleotide variant calling analysis (SNPs and INDELs) was performed by mapping our S. incanum and S. aethiopicum reads, as well as reads from S. melongena and S. torvum available on NCBI database (National Center for Biotechnology Information), against the eggplant genome. Both intraspecific and interspecific polymorphisms were identified and subsets of molecular markers were created for all species combinations. 36 SNVs were selected for validation in the S. incanum and S. aethiopicum accessions and 96% were correctly amplified confirming the polymorphisms. In addition, 976 and 1,278 SSRs were identified in S. incanum and S. aethiopicum transcriptomes respectively, and a set of them were validated. Conclusions: This work provides a broad insight into gene sequences and allelic variation in S. incanum and S. aethiopicum. This work is a first step toward better understanding of target genes involved in metabolic pathways relevant for eggplant breeding. The molecular markers detected in this study could be used across all the eggplant genepool, which is of interest for breeding programs as well as to perform marker-trait association and QTL analysis studies. The tree tomato ( Solanum betaceum Cav.) is a small tree native to the Andean region cultivated for its juicy fruits, which are having an increasing demand. Tree tomato is morphologically and phenologically different from other Solanum crops and tools for the phenological description of the developmental stages are needed for the enhancement of this emerging crop. We developed a basic and an extended numerical BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamnt, Chemische Industrie) scales which allow the precise identification of the phenological stages of tree tomato. Eight principal stages are described for germination, leaf development, formation of side shoots, stem elongation, inflorescence emergence, flowering, development of fruit, and ripening of fruit and seed. The basic (two-digit) scale is sufficiently precise for germination, stem elongation, and ripening of fruit and seed. However, for leaf development, formation of side shoots, inflorescence emergence, flowering, and development of fruit the extended (three-digit) scale is considered necessary for an adequate description. The description of the phenological stages is combined with illustrations for clarification. The tree tomato BBCH scale has been validated by characterizing 24 accessions of different varietal groups for traits of agronomic interest and evaluating the differences observed among accessions at specific BBCH developmental stages. The basic and extended BBCH scales represent a useful tool for the description and identification of phenological scales of tree tomato. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of overweight in school-aged children from Bogotá, Colombia and to examine its associations with sociodemographic characteristics, dietary patterns, and indicators of physical activity. We measured height and weight in 3075 children between 5 and 12 y of age who attended public primary schools in 2006 and we obtained information on maternal sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. The survey was representative of children from low and middle socioeconomic backgrounds. The prevalences of child overweight (including obesity) and obesity according to the International Obesity Task Force criteria were 11.1 and 1.8%, respectively. The prevalence of stunting was 9.8%. In multivariate analysis, child overweight was positively associated with indicators of higher socioeconomic status (SES), including low maternal parity and ownership of household assets. The prevalence of overweight was 3.6 times greater in children whose mothers were obese compared with children whose mothers had an adequate BMI (adjusted prevalence ratio = 3.61; 95% CI = 2.64, 4.93). Child overweight was positively associated with adherence to a "snacking" dietary pattern (P-trend = 0.06) and to frequent intake of hamburgers or hot dogs (adjusted prevalence ratio for at least once per week vs. never = 1.93; 95% CI = 1.03, 3.62), independent of total energy intake and other potential confounders. Time spent viewing television or playing outside the household were not significantly related to the prevalence of child overweight. In conclusion, child overweight in Bogotá is more common than stunting and is associated with higher SES, maternal obesity, and a snacking dietary pattern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the pharmacological compliance of patients treated with lansoprazole orally disintegrating tablets (LODT) in Primary Care (PC) and their acceptability of this formulation.Research Design and Methods: A multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study involving 433 PC physicians that included 433 patients aged at least 18 years, either diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or taking LODT to prevent NSAID-induced gastric ulcers. Compliance with LODT treatment was assessed with the Haynes-Sackett self-reported test. Acceptability was based on global patient assessment, rating the drug's organoleptic characteristics and properties recorded with a self-administered 15-item ad hoc questionnaire with 2 and 5-point Likert-type scales.Results: 423 patients (mean age 50.6 years, SD = 13.4) were evaluable for the main endpoint. Of these, 57.16% were men and 53.5% were treated with 30 mg doses of LODT for an average of 37.8 days (SD = 35.5). Compliance was achieved by 92.4% of the patients, mean percentage of compliance was 93.3. Demographical and clinical variables had no effect on compliance. Treatment with LODT was assessed as 'acceptable' or 'highly acceptable' by 91.7% of the sample. One adverse reaction, not serious, was reported by one patient (0.2%).Conclusions: In this observational study, compliance with lansoprazole orally disintegrating tablets was very high. OBJECTIVE: To assess the acceptability of lansoprazole orally disintegrating tablets (LODT) in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). METHODS: A multicentre, observational, cross-sectional study of patients diagnosed with GORD aged ≥18 years under the care of 272 gastroenterologists. Acceptability was determined by global patient assessment whereby the drug’s organoleptic characteristics and properties were evaluated by a self-administered 11-item ad hoc questionnaire with a 5-point Likert-type scale. RESULTS: A total of 734 patients (mean age 49.6 years [SD = 15.2]) with GORD who had been prescribed LODT ≥14 days prior to inclusion in the study were evaluable for the main endpoint. Of these, 51.1% were men. Most patients (80.7%) had been treated with doses of LODT 30mg/day for an average of 52.7 days (SD = 59.3). Overall, 93.6% of patients rated LODT treatment as ‘very acceptable’ or ‘‘acceptable’. The degree of acceptability was associated with the perception that the formulation helps treatment compliance (p < 0.001). The drug’s properties were rated as follows: size ‘neither large nor small’ (70.0%); flavour ‘very pleasant’ or ‘pleasant’ (75.2%); intensity of flavour ‘neither strong nor mild’, ‘mild’ or ‘very mild’ (86.1%); no ‘sandy sensation’ (53.4%); speed of dissolving ‘fast’ or ‘very fast’ (80.2%); use of tablets ‘very easy’ or ‘easy’ (92.4%) and use of tablets ‘very convenient’ or ‘convenient’ (91.0%). Three adverse reactions, none of them serious, were reported in three patients (0.4%). CONCLUSIONS: LODT were well accepted by patients with GORD.
