AbstractWe have previously shown that a small percentage of long descending propriospinal tract (LDPT) axons are spared, whereas few short thoracic propriospinal (TPS) fibers survive 2 weeks following severe (50 mm weight drop) low thoracic spinal cord contusion injury (SCI). Here, we extended those findings to a moderate (25 mm weight drop) T9 SCI and assessed the effects of this lesion severity on propriospinal tract fibers at different time periods after injury. We anterogradely labeled fibers with fluororuby (FR) or WGA-HRP to determine their location and number 2, 4, 6, and 16 weeks post-SCI. Findings were compared with non-injured controls. At chronic time points, surviving FR-labeled LDPT fibers rostral to the injury remained as reactive endings or as putative regenerative sprouts. Caudal to the injury, spared LDPT fibers ran along a rim of lateral and ventral white matter, and ended as small abnormal-appearing putative terminal boutons or reactive endings within the intermediate gray matter of lumbosacral cord, with little axonal arborization and no evidence of injury-induced sprouting. One striking difference in the WGA-HRP experimental operates was the increased density of labeling of spared axons within the white matter caudal to the injury compared to controls. This labeling pattern was reminiscent of the labeling found after axotomy in studies by others, and raises a question as to contusion injury-induced impaired axonal transport. We hypothesize that axonal sprouting of axons after partial spinal cord injury seen in previous investigations was not found in the present investigation because of the additional pathological effects of contusion injury, similar to what is observed after traumatic brain injury. N-Allylhydrazones are reported to undergo an elaborate [3,3]-sigmatropic shift/N 2extrusion sequence. Both concerted and radical cation pathways for the [3,3]-sigmatropic shift of several N-allylhydrazones were investigated using B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) calculations. It was discovered that, assuming facile formation of the N-allylhydrazone radical cation, the rearrangement takes place through a series of low barrier steps energetically preferred to the concerted alternative available to neutral N-allylhydrazones. Subsequent N 2extrusions forming corresponding homoallyl radicals were found to be extremely facile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cycloaddition of (Z)-7-(prop-1-enyl)-7-azabicyclo4.1.0heptane with dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate (DMAD) was reported previously to proceed with complete stereoselectivity. Quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP) were used to evaluate the mechanism of the cyclization process, and it was discovered that a stepwise pathway is preferred. The subsequent electrocyclic ring opening reaction of the cyclobutene was also studied, and it was found that ring opening to the “methyl-in” dienamine is preferred to the “methyl-out” product by some 4−5 kcal/mol. We report the discovery of nonstellar hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium absorption lines accompanying a transient, high-velocity (0.05c) broad absorption line (BAL) system in the optical spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018zr (z = 0.071). In the Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra, absorption of high- and low-ionization lines is also present at this velocity, making AT2018zr resemble a low-ionization BALQSO. We conclude that these transient absorption features are more likely to arise in fast outflows produced by the TDE than absorbed by the unbound debris. In accordance with the outflow picture, we are able to reproduce the flat-topped Hα emission in a spherically expanding medium without invoking the typical prescription of an elliptical disk. We also report the appearance of narrow (∼1000 kms−1) N iii λ4640, He ii λ4686, Hα, and Hβ emission in the late-time optical spectra of AT2018zr, which may be a result of UV continuum hardening at late times, as observed by Swift. Including AT2018zr, we find a high association rate (three out of four) of BALs in the UV spectra of TDEs. This suggests that outflows may be ubiquitous among TDEs and less sensitive to viewing angle effects compared to QSO outflows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent analyses suggest that distance residuals measured from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are correlated with local host galaxy properties within a few kiloparsecs of the SN explosion. However, the well-established correlation with global host galaxy properties is nearly as significant, with a shift of 0.06 mag across a low to high mass boundary (the mass step). Here, with 273 SNe Ia at z < 0.1, we investigate whether the stellar masses and rest-frame u − g colors of regions within 1.5 kpc of the SN Ia explosion site are significantly better correlated with SN distance measurements than global properties or properties measured at random locations in SN hosts. At ≲2σ significance, local properties tend to correlate with distance residuals better than properties at random locations, though despite using the largest low-z sample to date, we cannot definitively prove that a local correlation is more significant than a random correlation. Our data hint that SNe observed by surveys that do not target a pre-selected set of galaxies may have a larger local mass step than SNe from surveys that do, an increase of 0.071 ± 0.036 mag (2.0σ). We find a 3σ local mass step after global mass correction, evidence that SNe Ia should be corrected for their local mass, but we note that this effect is insignificant in the targeted low-z sample. Only the local mass step remains significant at >2σ after global mass correction, and we conservatively estimate a systematic shift in H0 measurements of −0.14 km s−1 Mpc−1 with an additional uncertainty of 0.14 km s−1 Mpc−1, ∼10% of the present uncertainty. Double detonations in double white dwarf (WD) binaries undergoing unstable mass transfer have emerged in recent years as one of the most promising Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitor scenarios. One potential outcome of this “dynamically driven double-degenerate double-detonation” (D6) scenario is that the companion WD survives the explosion and is flung away with a velocity equal to its >1000 km s−1 pre-SN orbital velocity. We perform a search for these hypervelocity runaway WDs using Gaia's second data release. In this paper, we discuss seven candidates followed up with ground-based instruments. Three sources are likely to be some of the fastest known stars in the Milky Way, with total Galactocentric velocities between 1000 and 3000 km s−1, and are consistent with having previously been companion WDs in pre-SN Ia systems. However, although the radial velocity of one of the stars is >1000 km s−1, the radial velocities of the other two stars are puzzlingly consistent with 0. The combined five-parameter astrometric solutions from Gaia and radial velocities from follow-up spectra yield tentative 6D confirmation of the D6 scenario. The past position of one of these stars places it within a faint, old SN remnant, further strengthening the interpretation of these candidates as hypervelocity runaways from binary systems that underwent SNe Ia. BACKGROUND Previous published reports on the number of non-growing follicles (NGFs) in the human ovary have employed model-based methods for number estimates. These methods are time-intensive, and require correction factors and assumptions that ultimately limit their accuracy. Here, we describe the modification, application and validation of a modern fractionator/optical disector technique for the estimation of human ovarian NGF number. METHODS Forty-eight pairs of normal human ovaries were collected from women (age 8–51 years) undergoing elective bilateral oophorectomy, organ donation, or from autopsy. After gross pathologic examination, systematic random sampling was utilized to obtain tissue for analysis by the fractionator/optical disector method. The precision of individual NGF counts was determined by calculating the observed coefficient of error (OCE). Intra-observer variability and variation in NGF number between ovaries within a pair were also determined. RESULTS The mean OCE was 16.6% with larger variations observed at lower follicle counts. In recount experiments of the same ovary, NGF number estimates varied by 15–29%, except at very low follicle counts where variation was greater, but absolute differences were small. There was no significant difference in NGF number between ovaries within a pair (Wilcoxon signed rank test, P = 0.81). CONCLUSIONS Modern stereology methods provide an unbiased, efficient method for estimating NGF number in the human ovary. Both ovaries within a pair contain similar numbers of NGFs.
